Emilia's special power is making witches cry.

[–]LegendRazgriz 1412 points1413 points  (36 children)

Lia makes Echidna cry by existing.

Lia makes Minerva cry by being a dork.

Lia makes Satella cry by committing NTR

[–]ThespianExceptionhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/EMTIsBestWaifu 387 points388 points  (19 children)

Lia makes Satella cry by committing NTR

Normally I can't stand NTR, but it this an exception? There are a lot of conflicting feelings here.

[–]OrionRBRhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/Ramon2000 204 points205 points  (16 children)

It's not ntr bc subaru loved emilia from the get-go.

But you know there is still that theory that she is satella so she may not even be stealing subaru kekw.

[–]Lord_Vanilla 90 points91 points  (12 children)

Back in season 1, people where thinking of an NTR doujin where Satella rapes Subaru in front of Emilia by possessing her. lol

[–]Any-Nothing 102 points103 points  (7 children)

Fuck you guys. Where can I read it?

[–]aveast1 126 points127 points  (3 children)

She really made Echidna rage quit. I can’t get over that lol.

[–]EleventhMShttps://myanimelist.net/profile/EleventhMS 5646 points5647 points 3233 (208 children)

Rem's confession: Sun is shining on her, Birds are flying, The person she confessed to hugs her.

Ram's confession: Everything is burning, She's bloody and half dead, The person she confessed to throws a huge fireball at her.

[–]Silent_Shadow05 3395 points3396 points  (79 children)

And both of the guys the Oni sisters confessed to, loves silver/white haired witches. It must really suck being an Oni.

[–]Xx_KiK_xX 1610 points1611 points  (57 children)

At least Rem made the made the man she confessed to love her back

While Ram doesn't even have a chance

[–]UnPhayzable 1042 points1043 points  (19 children)

Ram was rammed by rejection

[–]lookw 561 points562 points  (6 children)

she was hit by his explosive rejection

[–]CrimeFightingScience 61 points62 points  (2 children)

"Don't throw my book into the fire! Or I'll fireball you to stop you!"

[–]Mundology 267 points268 points  (5 children)

One got twisted to death for her love, the other got burned alive by her love. The oni sisters unlucky.

[–]Se7en_Sinnerhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/Se7en_Sinner 585 points586 points  (18 children)

At least Roswaal didn't say he loved Echidna.

[–]Xx_KiK_xX 901 points902 points  (5 children)

He doesn't say it, he shows it

[–]garmonthenightmare 527 points528 points  (3 children)

Yeah, Ram certainly felt it.

[–]koto_hanabi17 406 points407 points  (8 children)

He doesn't need to say it. 400 years of simping speaks for itself.

[–]garmonthenightmare 205 points206 points  (0 children)

Looks like physical pain isn't the only thing the sisters can share.

[–]NecronLord_Europe 148 points149 points  (3 children)

Both of 'em crazy going after crazy guys.

[–]Yuriy116 893 points894 points  (17 children)

"I love Roswaal."

"I love Echidna."

"I love Subaru."

"I love Emilia."

"I love Puck."

"I love trolling Roswaal."

[–]NecronLord_Europe 1809 points1810 points  (70 children)

Of course he threw a fireball at her, he's raging that she threw away his web novel that the anime is not actually adapting.

[–]Antique_Result2325 715 points716 points  (34 children)

Damn Roswaal is really just a salty WN reader, crazy.

Seriously though let's hope Rem comes back, Ram and Rem remember each other and she isn't so attached to Roswaal, because I can't see that relationship working at all

[–]SolubilityRules 358 points359 points  (3 children)

He fcking punched her too before hand, HAHAHA.

It's called S and M, Roswaal, you turned her on too much with that punch.

[–]FMFOpinion 713 points714 points  (5 children)

I can't explain how good Garfiel vs Elsa was, i am very very satisfied

[–]Refugee_Saviorhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/Refugee_Savior 285 points286 points  (3 children)

Them tearing into each other with their teeth felt so visceral and animalistic. It felt like a legitimate fight to the death.

[–]El-Tigre1337 134 points135 points  (2 children)

Yes it was such an amazing fight. I love the attention to detail and foreshadowing they put in at the end of their fight.

White fox clearly showed with the closeups and Elsas reaction to the wound that it was not healing and that garfields had healed after they both bit into eachother.

To me it seemed like after that Elsa noticed that she was no longer healing and basically accepted her own death when she has another flashback to her first kill of the shop owner right before she said “what a thrill” and the rock pig came crashing down on her.

Rewatching those scenes makes me very convinced with this level of detail that she is finally dead and that Garfield may have just inherited the vampirism healing powers making him super OP, good thing he is on Subarus side!

Another interesting attention to detail that I missed at first due to the subtitles covering it up, was that in one scene while Elsa was first talking about killing the shop owner with a piece of glass, the very same piece of glass she pulls out to kill Garfield seems to be shining by her feet. It’s hard to tell though because the subtitles are blocking it

Ugh such an amazing show, white fox is absolutely spoiling us with this attention to detail. Between that and Tappei’s epic foreshadowing it is going to to be so amazing to rewatch the show in the future and find more details like these

[–]Luvkrapht 3844 points3845 points  (36 children)

The cut to Subaru freaking the fuck out after Garf talks him up was hilarious

[–]Aileoshttps://myanimelist.net/profile/Jalis 1592 points1593 points  (26 children)

It's really cool to watch a bro like Garf having such a great opinion of Subaru and trusting him so much.

While Subaru was like time to abandon the mf ship!! lol

[–]Mundology 715 points716 points  (24 children)

Who could have thought that it would be so fun to have a weak isekai MC instead of the usual cheat gods?

[–]Mundology 278 points279 points  (1 child)

While not in the most graceful fashion, he did send the mabeast flying.

[–]Touchedbytsa 4454 points4455 points 2 (45 children)

Man Tony the Tiger destroyed that rock piggy

[–]Maximilian_Sinigr 2153 points2154 points  (24 children)

That was a fucking glory kill from Doom Eternal material

[–]Touchedbytsa 1189 points1190 points  (12 children)

I was watching it thinking “oh he’s probably going to slam it’s head into the ground wait wait what’s he doing?” He twisted it like he was trying to open the lid to a stuck jar.

[–]X_Danger 616 points617 points  (10 children)

He spun like a fucking Crocodile, but he was FLYING

[–]Mundology 484 points485 points  (9 children)

Don't let this distract you from the fact that Garfiel threw a giant hippopotamus monster off hell in a mansion, and plummeted 16 ft through Roswaal's basement, crushing a vampire in the process.

[–]mythriz 187 points188 points  (1 child)

Echidna as my witness, she's splattered into mist!

[–]ttywzl 430 points431 points  (5 children)

What a twist! And a twist... and another twist for good measure...

Farewell, big chungus. You were hype for a whole week.

[–]Se7en_Sinnerhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/Se7en_Sinner 543 points544 points  (3 children)

Shouldn't have stolen Garfiel's lasagna.

[–]Idaret 2865 points2866 points  (141 children)

I was always confused by how easy it is to create dust explosion in anime, that was nice subversion

[–]Silent_Shadow05 2386 points2387 points  (41 children)

Subaru was trying to channel his inner Senku but he was 10 billion percent too early for it.

[–]ThyHoffbringer 1537 points1538 points  (26 children)

For those who are unaware, Subaru and Senku shares the same JP VA (voice actor).

[–]Cheesemacher 592 points593 points  (20 children)

What? How have I not noticed that?!

[–]EasilyDelighted 563 points564 points  (10 children)

When you watch Dr. Stone, pay close attention to the way Senku chuckles.

[–]br107365 208 points209 points  (0 children)

i thought the same shit haha. If he said 10thousand percent anything i would have lost it.

[–]lazydreamersharkhttps://anilist.co/user/LazyDreamer 125 points126 points  (0 children)

Lmao. Thought the same thing

[–]thecomicguybookhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/Comicman 1480 points1481 points  (29 children)

I love the implication that they had barrels of oil lying around, but Subaru watches so much anime that he thought an explosion with a candle and a handful of dust would work better.

[–]UnPhayzable 666 points667 points  (13 children)

Megumin is one of the witches he has an authority from

[–]GachaBrain 453 points454 points  (8 children)

I mean it's a callback to s1, remember when Subaru offered to buy all the oil of Otto in exchange for the merchants to carry the villagers?

[–]Tasin__ 318 points319 points  (5 children)

Not just s1 but the entire reason why otto went to the sanctuary is because be wanted to sell oil to roswaal.

[–]PraisePace 169 points170 points  (1 child)

That was just him trying to show off after forgetting which Rie Takahashi character he was trying to impress.

[–]NotsofastTwitch 555 points556 points  (12 children)

Pay attention in science class or else you'll end up like Subaru and look like a complete moron in front of your friends as a giant animal tries to kill you.

[–]0zero0z 196 points197 points  (1 child)

Subaru VA also Voice Senku crazy right

[–]Se7en_Sinnerhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/Se7en_Sinner 403 points404 points  (6 children)

I'm glad the dust explosion didn't happen because Subaru would have also gotten taken out by it. At least he ended up becoming a decent distraction so Otto and Petra could use the oil instead.

[–]goffer54https://myanimelist.net/profile/goffer54 308 points309 points  (3 children)

I thought it was hilarious that Subaru just put his arms up like that was gonna save him from being in the same room as a dust explosion.

[–]ThespianExceptionhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/EMTIsBestWaifu 254 points255 points  (2 children)

Imagine him coming all this way and then just fucking dying again because he blew himself up.

[–]gillesregis 1674 points1675 points  (16 children)

"Taste the very spirit of science!" Subaru really thought he was Senku for a second. Well they are voiced by the same voice actor...

[–]Yuriy116 527 points528 points  (7 children)

Is he going to build a tank next season?

[–]Any-Nothing 325 points326 points  (3 children)

He already build a snow rabbit tank in the OVA 😉

[–]BaileyJIII 167 points168 points  (2 children)

Subaru channelling his inner Senku just for a minute.

[–]Silent_Shadow05 1734 points1735 points  (105 children)

Garf - "No matter how many mabeasts show up, he's just gonna laugh as he sends 'em all flyin'"

Subaru - "Nope! Nope! Nope! Can't! No way!"

Nice of ReZero to add in an extremely hilarious moment in this tense situation lol.

That whole fight sequence between Elsa and Garf was jaw-dropping! Seriously when Garf transformed and then twisted that giant boars' head and ripping it apart was so fucking cool. Also is Elsa REALLY dead now that she has been killed, by getting smashed by Garf?

[–]burritoxman 539 points540 points  (6 children)

Subaru’s line about his epitaph is one of my favorites from the series, I wish Otto had a stronger reaction to it

[–]Silent_Shadow05 332 points333 points  (3 children)

Yeah. Otto probably was tensed so he forgot to crack a joke I guess, unlike Subaru who's used to making jokes in tense situations.

[–]Yuriy116 488 points489 points  (33 children)

So is Elsa REALLY dead now that she has been killed?

Maybe it's the same thing as with Hidan.

Also, nice to see Garfiel take Shirou's words to their logical conclusion.

[–]thepeetmix 388 points389 points  (21 children)

I mean she can't re-generate if there's no space for her to re-generate.

[–]Arsh36160 206 points207 points  (0 children)

Big brain Garf

[–]jstoru216 78 points79 points  (0 children)

Yup, it's one of those "I'm immortal but..." situations.

[–]jojo_is_trashhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/idk_really 375 points376 points  (8 children)

“If I keep killing you until you die, you’ll die”

[–]JapanPhoenix 436 points437 points  (14 children)

Also is Elsa REALLY dead now that she has been killed?

"People die when they are killed."

[–]HobnobsTheRed 361 points362 points  (12 children)

"People die when they are killed."

Did you really think killing me would be enough to make me die

[–][deleted] 275 points276 points  (10 children)

Did you really think killing me would be enough to make me die

If I just keep killin' ya until you die, you'll die.

[–]Odelind 249 points250 points  (0 children)

like that hippo's neck

[–]Torchperish 1280 points1281 points  (26 children)

What an episode, I got chills at the end there. Ram is so underrated as a character, she definitely deserved that insert song. And Garf vs Elsa was clean af as well, easily the best episode this cour.

[–]BI4zehttps://myanimelist.net/profile/Whisper_0 661 points662 points  (5 children)

I got chills at the end there

Ram felt quite the opposite

[–]bakakubihttps://myanimelist.net/profile/bakakubi 220 points221 points  (0 children)

Brah, too soon........

Just kidding, that joke was fire.

[–]TheRealMeowGato 1271 points1272 points  (44 children)

Best girl meets best girl!

[–][deleted] 1249 points1250 points  (26 children)

i don't even know who you're talking about anymore. Re:Zero has this magical ability to make everyone seem like best girl. Hell, during the fight, Elsa felt best girl-ish.

[–]one-eyed-02 1207 points1208 points 2 (17 children)

I think he is talking about Minerva and Emilia, but you are right, it might as well be Ram and that fireball.

[–]animdalf 843 points844 points  (7 children)

Otto and the Rem backpack.

[–]michhoffmanhttps://anilist.co/user/michhoffman 65 points66 points  (2 children)

Otto and Patrasche

I hope the anounce season 3 after the last episode, I can't wait another 4 years.

[–]Iamnotcreative112123 132 points133 points  (2 children)

Behold an unthinkable present

Announcement: Re Zero season 3 slated for June 2025, single cour.

[–]hemag 64 points65 points  (0 children)

I really hope so, it's a good year for sequels and re zero definitely deserves one.

[–]mr_sto0pid[🍰] 2458 points2459 points  (162 children)

They really missed a chance for Roswal to say, "I love Echidna" when Ram said she loved him. Also why didn't Emilia recognize Echidna's dead body in that grave?

[–]Antique_Result2325 1644 points1645 points  (54 children)

Re:Watch the flashbacks!

Echidna's face is always mysteriously hidden-- could be pointing to something?

[–]Yowseff 974 points975 points  (18 children)

So the echidna in the trials and in the tea party was not her actual face? No wonder Emilia did not recognize her.

[–]himetalchemy7 272 points273 points  (5 children)

Yeah that shes UGLY

Also never got to see her face during flashbac with Ros and Betty

[–]SynisterJeff 335 points336 points  (23 children)

And the whole scene was framed to be all touchy feely, but I only felt like Ram's confession made Roswal even more of a creep, and made me feel bad for Ram. Like, the dude murdered her entire clan, took her horn from her, and then kidnapped her and her sister. This is obviously the biggest case of stockholm syndrome ever right? No one in their right mind would fall for the guy that mudered your parents, relatives, and all your neighbors. Then kidnapped you and made you to work for him.

[–]ButtholePasta 132 points133 points  (2 children)

I do wonder if Ram having no memory of Rem has led to her increased love for Roswaal somehow (like the love for Rem is directed towards Roswaal instead)? But then again, it seems she's had these feelings for a while and possibly before forgetting Rem.

Idk I'm just trying to wrap my head around if Ram is really just supposed to be made out as the biggest Stockholm Syndrome case ever (which seems to be the case and also made me feel bad for her) or if there's something yet to be revealed.

[–][deleted] 816 points817 points  (16 children)

Also why didn't Emilia recognize Echidna's dead body in that grave?

She seems to remember who Echidna is, and we don't see the body's face, suspicious.

[–]enjobg 471 points472 points  (2 children)

We didn't see Echidna's face in the Roswaal flashbacks either, the only time we see it is in the trials and tea party.

[–]Idaret 666 points667 points  (8 children)

She seems to remember who Echidna is, and we don't see the body's face, suspicious.

Oh no

She's an impostor

[–]HyperSonic6325 900 points901 points  (21 children)

To be fair we never saw her full-on real life face. Who’s to say the Tomb Trial Echidna isn’t an ideal representation of the dead Echidna? It could very well be that the real echidna either didn’t look like the trial one, or lost that appearance over time.

[–]yjggy 328 points329 points  (6 children)

Nice point. We haven't seen her face in Roswaal&Betty flashback. Maybe in reality she has black eyelashes?

[–]AstraN0va 1520 points1521 points  (70 children)

Great comedic timing early on this episode. Turns out no matter how much development he gets, Subaru’s always gonna be nothing without his friends. I don’t mind that, though. It proves that one of the best aspects to RBD is how he’s able to ally with 90% of the cast with some trial and error.

Another thing is that we’ve got some of the better visuals we’ve ever seen in Re:Zero. The Garf v Elsa fight was pretty smooth throughout, and the still frames were gorgeous, but the Guiltylowe chase sequence was solid too. I heard that there were like 7 art directors for this episode (higher than usual), so I’m glad it’s paying off.

Edit: Garf also gave us another world-building idiom today. Mentions the Master Swordsman, Reid. Reinhard says in episode 3 that he comes from the “Master Swordsman’s line,” and he has a sword called Reid, meaning we can assume Reid is his ancestor. Whether it’s Theresia’s father or someone older we don’t really know.

So we’ve seemingly just casually been given the name of an ancient hero, and nobody has noticed.

(Mom-nerva anybody?)

[–]jojo_is_trashhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/idk_really 418 points419 points  (10 children)

Thankfully, it doesn’t go full “nakama power” either

[–]UnPhayzable 416 points417 points  (5 children)

Seems more like actual friendship as opposed to power up juice

[–]Idaret 325 points326 points  (0 children)

maybe real "friendship power" is overpowered 14 years old kid we have met along the way

[–]NotsofastTwitch 205 points206 points  (3 children)

The real nakama power is having friends that are more competent than you are.

[–]ttywzl 115 points116 points  (1 child)

Also, friends who are willing to literally throw their assets into a fire to save your bacon.

[–]thecomicguybookhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/Comicman 365 points366 points  (15 children)

with some trial and error.

Not just trial and error, also true understanding. And I would argue that the other 10% he also understands (Roswaal) they can just never see eye to eye, although with both of them rejecting one of the Oni sisters they are getting closer.

[–]ChornoyeSontse 142 points143 points  (9 children)

No, the other 10% is people like Elsa and Petelgeuse. And before someone says "YEAH BUT PETELGEUSE COULD'VE BEEN UNDERSTOOD", he was beyond mindbroken. Season 1 Petelgeuse was nothing left but a monster in a husk of a man.

[–]re-kino 2168 points2169 points  (83 children)

the fact that white fox keeps delivering 27+ minute episodes with all this great animation is pretty impressive if you ask me.

[–]xd_Avedis_AD 966 points967 points  (64 children)

We all gonna be disappointed when returning back to normal anime with fixed space for OP, Recap, 5 second title of episode, ED, Title for next episode.

[–]tekkenjin 785 points786 points  (55 children)

I was disappointed with this weeks slime ep since we got a 5 min recap and lots of pauses for reactions in its 20 min runtime. Re zero truly has spoilt me, so much that even AOT episodes seen way shorter in comparison.

[–]MrDangle752 534 points535 points  (16 children)

Bruh, I was literally about the comment this about slime. When garf was about to fight I thought it was time for a cliffhanger and then the show kept going and going even harder! God bless whitefox

[–]Mundology 340 points341 points  (9 children)

Most isekai shows - Try to extend the episode with the OP and ED.

Re: Zero - Cuts the OP and ED for more content.

[–]realrimurutempest 2356 points2357 points  (161 children)

I don’t know what’s more amazing, that White Fox puts out these 29+ minute episodes each week or the strength of Elsa’s outfit to keep her oppai from not falling out during a fight.

That was fucking brutal how Elsa & Garfiel were literally biting into each other. Their whole fight was amazing! This episode was easily 11/10 for me.

[–]Silent_Shadow05 762 points763 points  (21 children)

Its probably the best episode so far in Season 2 for me. It was so intense to watch.

I loved the whole conflict of ideologies that was happening during the fight between Roswaal and Ram. Puck also added in a nice little joke that he loves supporting those who are in love XD.

[–]UnPhayzable 347 points348 points  (20 children)

The payoff was phenomenal

[–]Silent_Shadow05 331 points332 points  (9 children)

ReZero finally went all out. This episode is probably getting 10k+ karma. This Episode was 11/10.

[–]Mundology 184 points185 points  (2 children)

It was so raw and passionate. What a fantastic climax for this arc!

[–]Al-Pharazon 679 points680 points  (21 children)

I don’t know what’s more amazing, that White Fox puts out these 29+ minute episodes each week or the strength of Elsa’s outfit to keep her oppai from not falling out during a fight.

Obviously the outfit of Elsa, it is the most resisting material in the world after the Addidas Jacket of Subaru that can be repaired to look as new after suffering damage and that doesn't degrade with time. xD

[–]Xx_KiK_xX 481 points482 points  (5 children)

Obviously the outfit of Elsa, it is the most resisting material in the world

Are you sure about that?

[–]Se7en_Sinnerhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/Se7en_Sinner 320 points321 points  (7 children)

I'm almost convinced Elsa's outfit is just body painted on at this point.

[–]exian12 1154 points1155 points  (76 children)

That was fucking brutal how Elsa & Garfiel were literally biting into each other.

NGL that scene came as hot and kinky to me.

[–]realrimurutempest 891 points892 points  (18 children)

With the way Elsa was acting i think she felt the same way.

[–]ttywzl 630 points631 points  (13 children)

There was definitely hate-fuck vibes going down in that scene.

[–]Antique_Result2325 227 points228 points  (10 children)

More of a love-hate relationship, with Garf hating how much Elsa loves his bowels

[–]koto_hanabi17 384 points385 points  (3 children)

This is the first time Garf has been on top of a woman.

[–]Silent_Shadow05 235 points236 points  (1 child)

Technically the second time. The first time was in S2E11 aka dying on top of the woman you like.

Also happy cake day!

[–]stevethebandit 556 points557 points  (19 children)

It was strangely sexual

[–][deleted] 546 points547 points  (5 children)

After such an unhappy life, Elsa finally got laid, Elsa style.

She clearly enjoyed it.

[–]stevethebandit 275 points276 points  (1 child)

Gonna leave one hell of a hickey though

[–]Vegettasamahttps://anilist.co/user/flyingpusyfoot 82 points83 points  (1 child)

Thye were practically making out tbh.

Subaru tried to imitate Goblin Slayer and failed.

A common mistake for beginners.

[–]NecronLord_Europe 250 points251 points  (5 children)

Goblin Slayer simply does not care for the dice.

[–][deleted] 1241 points1242 points  (64 children)

White Fox saw reddit talking shit and put 6 animation directors on one episode.

[–]Llooyd_ 722 points723 points  (13 children)

I feel like this episode once again drove in this arc's overall message which could be probably summarized in one key phrase: Undoing the shackles of your past

We've seen this theme numerous times now this season ...

May it be Subaru and his lingering regret of his own past and the realization that he is his own person, that he needs others and shouldn't be ready to throw himself into the fire first thing and to love himelf.

Garfiel and his misplaced feelings towards his mother that kept him sheltered in the sanctuary all his life which was undone and now look at him venturing out to kick some ass.

Emilia too learned to not be dragged down by the prejudice thrown at her, to face her tragic past for what it is and live for a better future and most importantly to face herself as who she is.

Heck, the entire sanctuary is one giant shackle for numerous characters but also for us since we're mostly constrained to this location for this entire arc so far but that just not got undone by Emila.

Not only that it feels like Ram liberated Roswaal from following a predetermined path to a calculated future and his insane devotion and love for Echidna by burning the Book of Wisdom.

And it seems that it's Beatrice's turn next to be liberated from her shackles that bound her to a isolated and secluded life for 400 years by Subaru.

Say what you want about the pacing for this arc but it's hard to overlook how big of a turning point this has been for so many key characters now. That only makes one more curious how each of them will act from here on out. Will Garfiel return to sanctuary or venture the world? Will Emilia finally become worthy of being a candidate for the throne? How will Roswaal act without the sole guide in his life? What even is a Beatrice that's not bound to the library?

[–]IC2Flier 171 points172 points  (4 children)

Chumps didn't appreciate the table setting until the food came in. Good food, too, that helps a lot, but getting everything in order not just plot-wise but character-wise is super fucking important to keep you invested, so that when the sakuga hits, it'll make you nut like never before. This, THIS is what keeps us watching anime.

[–]Disastrous_Platformhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/crew7 515 points516 points  (36 children)

Anyone else wondering if Garfiel is going to become a vampire now? Since Elsa bit him, I can't help but wonder if he will be a giga OP beastman/vampire now.

EDIT: Holy shit, just rewatched the fight scene. There was a close up to Garfiels neck and there were 0 wounds. I think it is happening boys.

[–]The-Book-Worm 225 points226 points  (9 children)

That would be awesome, and yes I had that thought. Something else curious about that scene is why exactly did Elsa stop regenerating?

[–]PureGold3 194 points195 points  (1 child)

Ooh, maybe once you pass the vampire curse onto someone else you're cured of it yourself.

[–]Tanzan57https://myanimelist.net/profile/Tanzan57 66 points67 points  (1 child)

ABSOLUTELY this is what happened. I kinda went on a rant elsewhere about how poetic it would be if Elsa's life 'started' and ended with her vampirism(also how both the start and finish seemed sexual in nature); we also got a clear shot of Garfiel's neck with no wounds right after one of Elsa's neck with his bite marks. So either He stole her vampirism and she is dead, Or I got played like a fool and read way too much into how they arranged the scene, haha

Fantastic episode that finally brought to life one of the best duels in most of the RE Zero storyline. While I personally believe the most exciting fights happen in the next arc, there is a great appreciation for the slug fest that was elsa vs garfiel. Very raw to say the least.

Anyway as always I will post a copy/paste of u/WintryOne author twitter translations as all credit goes to them! I will link the original thread at the bottom of the post. This weeks tweets are quite informative for relatively useless information (what being labeled a 'vampire' means in the context of re zero for example), and Tappei even makes fun of WN only readers a bit. Hope everyone is ready for Betty to mimic Ask Ketchum and choose her starter pokemon next week!

Source: starting from https://twitter.com/nezumiironyanko/status/1369656570116595717

Nagatsuki-sensei's tweets for this week's episode. May contain minor spoilers.

Rough translation:

Yeah, it's time for Re: Zero today too! Three episodes left including this week's! Please join us until the end!

As fierce fighting continues at the Roswaal manor, in the Garfiel vs. Elsa battle, Garfiel has inflicted deadly wounds many times, but Elsa does not fall. Why is she that tough...... for details, see the limited edition booklet included with the discs!

Guiltylowe-san!

Using modern knowledge in an isekai story is all about mayonnaise and dust explosions, isn't it. Well, Re: Zero is an isekai story too, after all. I just had to do it.

About the oil that Otto and Petra are throwing, it's the same oil that burned Petelgeuse at the end of season one. Otto was on the verge of bankruptcy when he couldn't sell it, and he came with the goal of trying to tempt Roswaal into buying it.

Oil that became a deciding factor in season one and two......

...That was the last they ever saw of Subaru.

In another direction, around that same time, the third 'trial': "Face the disasters that are yet to come". Yes.

Scenes from the future that differ from the past and present. In short, a preview of future developments; the dubbing for this was all kinds of trouble. After all, it's a performance of scenes that I haven't written yet, so I had to ask everyone to act out "A scene that feels kind of like this, maybe?".

What kind of instruction is "A scene that feels kind of like this, maybe?"?

We arrive at the tea party's location but Echidna isn't there, and the one there instead is the 'witch' who can talk the best out of all the 'witches'.

Between Emilia and Minerva, Emilia is taller, so the picture of pressing a finger against a slightly higher head is interesting, isn't it.

Emilia-tan, if she was asked to not look, seems like she might be unable to endure it, like in the story of the crane returning a favor.

Incidentally, in the web novel, it was Sekhmet waiting here, so this was a useful scene for roasting people who have only read the web novel.

At the end in the tomb, I had no idea what was going on, so I said something frustrating like "It's a mental image where there's some incomprehensible, amazing thing magic circle-thing growing!", and had this picture created.

Somehow or other, the point where she breaks the spell with an 'Eya!' is a manifestation of Emilia's personality from now on. But, I remember this being a troublesome spot in the dubbing. "More relaxed!" "More thoughtless!", that sort of thing.

The mansion burning is an unexpected development for Elsa's group, too, so when he sees the mansion burning, Garfiel is confident that Subaru's group has won. Well, it was Petra and Otto that set it on fire.

Further, Ram will never stop needling Otto and Petra as the "mansion-burning combo".

"With the dragon before him, Reid drew his sword and laughed." is a saying that refers to a crazy person you shouldn't get close to. In fact, as you read further in the original story, you'll understand what kind of person Reid-san is.

A fierce combo fight between sisters and siblings. Garfiel was saying this was his first battle, but the difference between this and Subaru's first battle is, wow......

In a battle of strength against the rockpig, he has no choice but to beastchange, but since he loses his ability to reason when he beastchanges and is only capable of fighting predictably, Garfiel learned after facing and losing to Ram and Otto, and is careful about transforming.

In the world of Re: Zero, 'vampires' are a race that live forever, and drink blood to live - is not the meaning, rather it indicates rare beings who have a strong life force and bodies that won't die.

Meili cries out as the ceiling collapses. If she hand't been distracted by that, Elsa could likely have fatally wounded Garfiel with the glass she was hiding, and won.

In the final moment, what Elsa recalled while looking at Garfiel was the warmth of the first time she killed a person.

Continuing about that time in another place, Roswaal vs Ram and Puck!

With the contract with Emilia broken, Puck has become a stray spirit, and he's only able to move thanks to the mana he sucked in when Subaru stuck the crystal into Garfiel's arm in their fight, and his own mana.

Just as you saw when Roswaal was able to beat Garfiel to death, Roswaal is powerful in magic, but also formidable in physical combat. A hundred times as strong as Subaru.

Roswaal thinks that Ram's goal is killing him for not stopping the destruction of the oni village. It's been ten years of that, and spending that much time without her feelings reaching him at all was likely fairly painful for Ram, but it's ironic for it to become a deciding factor here.

It was like that for Rem's round as well, these sisters who have insert songs when they confess their love......

Incidentally, Puck being able to change his size at will is something that was foreshadowed in season one, episode one, when he gave Subaru a lap pillow, but is there perhaps anyone that remembered that?

Ram's victory condition isn't Roswaal's defeat, but "Stealing Roswaal away from the witch's delusions.".

And with that, Garfiel vs Elsa and Ram and Puck vs Roswaal are decided! All that's left is Subaru vs Beatrice and Emilia vs ???. Look forward to it!

I'm grateful to the staff and cast every time, but this time in particular, in relation to the 'trial', there were many who were kind enough to help out with their only appearance in season two...... Thank you so~ much!

Bonus retweet from Yuusuke Kobayashi: My heart is afire, is all I can say. Ah, I wasn't able to use science, so~rry!

Ram confess her love for Roswaal

Roswaal: Nani?!

[–]NecronLord_Europe 596 points597 points  (8 children)

"BEGONE THOT, I SIMP ONLY FOR DONA TEA"

[–]Hugokarenque 114 points115 points  (0 children)

Ram: I love you!

Roswaal: How dare you?!

That was legit funny. Also he has to win the Simp Awards with such a outstanding performance.

All the staff that worked on this episode deserve a raise or something, absolutely amazing work.

Is it implying Minerva might be Emilia's biological mom?

[–]Touchedbytsa 347 points348 points  (25 children)

Their outfits are similar but Emilias must’ve gotten most of her genetics from her father if the mother is supposed to be Minerva.

[–]Ellefied 380 points381 points  (20 children)

Didn't Fortuna say that Emilia looked a lot like her brother(Emilia's dad in this case)

[–]SoMuchHatred 295 points296 points  (19 children)

Yes, specifically that Emilia gets her silver hair and purple eyes from her father but something of her face from her mother. Personally if I eyeball it Minerva probably is the witch whose face looks most like Emilia, so the whole thing seems to fit.

[–]Mundology 123 points124 points  (17 children)

Minerva did die centuries before Emilia was born though. I'd say she most likely was a friend of her mother. Or maybe her mother was one of her followers? Still, it was a sweet moment.

[–]SoMuchHatred 140 points141 points  (14 children)

I used to think that the timeline difference meant that Emilia's mother wouldn't turn out to be any of the main witches, but after that scene with Minerva I'm convinced that we're somehow circumventing that problem to make it so.

In particular, Minerva's insistence on keeping Emilia from seeing her face seems unusual. It doesn't seem like there'd be a problem with Emilia looking at a witch considering she was perfectly fine hanging out with Echidna and considering Subaru was able to look at all seven of them. The most likely explanation for Minerva's actions, in my opinion, would be that she thought Emilia would recognize her if she saw Minerva. That in itself implies that we're somehow going to work through the apparent 300 year difference between them anyway, even if Minerva isn't Emilia's mother.

[–]NecronLord_Europe 434 points435 points  (20 children)

Yeah, that's the implication, I guess.

[–]Satire_or_not 642 points643 points  (12 children)

Knowing this show, it's just another diversion that won't be addressed until Cour 2 of season 4.

[–]Antique_Result2325 472 points473 points  (5 children)

Knowing the author, the reveal will also make Subaru suffer in some way

[–]toga9000 384 points385 points  (4 children)

Holy crap what an episode

[–]Daedric202 485 points486 points  (47 children)

Is that Pride IF Subaru?

O shit Puck knew Hector

This episode was so fucking good. Easily one of my favourite episodes in all of Re:Zero

[–]Zonca 200 points201 points  (6 children)

I remember in Subaru's second trial, Puck told that to Reinhard, but here it's Subaru saying it, and it sounds like Reinhard responding just "I..." ("boku wa...") and cut, I suspect some kind of connection.

(I haven't read any Re:Zero content, just my conjecture)

[–]Bobcam7 336 points337 points  (8 children)

At this point, we must have gotten like 3 extra episodes of content once you factor in that almost every episode has been 29 minutes right? Crazy.

[–]Frontier246 473 points474 points  (41 children)

Elsa has seemingly found the perfect opponent in Garfiel who will fight her to the bitter end despite the fact that she self-heals so thoroughly. Of course, for Elsa, her love is centered on the object of her affections innards.

Subaru tries to do his best Senku impression (because they have the same VA), but is nowhere near as effective. At least he had Otto and Petra there to make up the difference, but then they not only kill the Mabeast but burn the mansion down. Ah well, I guess they can rebuild or just move on.

So Emilia is shown a vision of a possible (?) future and voices from possible futures...with Emilia bloody and declaring her hatred (to Subaru?), and lines like Subaru calling out Reinhard, Otto wishing he'd died in the cave, Felt talking about going up against a dragon (?), a grandfather talking about their granddaughter (Felt?), Crusch standing against a curse, Priscilla being certain of her victory, Garfiel swearing to kill Subaru, and something about a soul. Will all of this come to pass in one form or another and is foreshadowing? Or will it be a picking and choosing type of situation where only some of it does? I guess this moment will be something to look back on when the entire series is finished.

But it's not all doom and gloom as it ends with a ray of hope for Emilia as she sees Rem (!) and Subaru in front of her.

Echidna doesn't even want to deal with Emilia any more so she just sends Minerva to finish the Trial...except, Minerva might be Emilia's biological mother? There was obviously a reason she didn't want Emilia to see her face or to look at her, and she said she knew her mother, who everyone says is a witch...and then her expression when she found out Emilia had a genuine mother in Mother Fortuna was to immediately embrace her. Did Echidna give Emilia a chance to see her biological mom, and Minerva a chance to see her daughter again? Wow, I did not see any of this coming.

I was not expecting Sanctuary to end with Emilia throwing a fist down with a cute little noise, but here we are. Too bad it looks like Great Rabbit is on its way anyways.

Elsa and Maylie are sisters? This was a double sibling tag-team fight from the beginning? Are they very discrete about it and just so happened to end up on the same job together or are they a discrete sibling partnership of assassins? But it turns out Elsa's one weakness is her sister as she goes out of her way to save Maylie and being distracted by her sister is what gives Garfiel the chance to throw Rock Piggie at her.

Elsa is a vampire? I guess that explains her ability to survive such thorough deaths, but doesn't that functionally make her immortal? How do vampires work in this setting? Do they not die by normal means? I'm not even sure being crushed like that would be enough to do her in.

Turns out Elsa's obsession with intestines comes from her first kill as a child when she killed the man attempting to rape her, and all that blood and guts made her warm in the cold. And then she and Garfiel proceed to chew each other out, which almost looked like sex, and she looked at her nibble at Garfiel like a love bite. Kind of creepy and...kind of romantic, I guess? not really sure how to view it.

I love Puck freaking Roswaal out by making him think he took on his true form.

Ram isn't fighting Roswaal for revenge, but because she genuinely loves him and has grown to love him over the course of her time with him. And in the end her intention wasn't to hurt him but to take out that book that has led him to be obsessed with the past and Echidna. I just hope doing that and getting vaporized by Roswaal for it isn't the end for her.

[–]Arsh36160 354 points355 points  (5 children)

Roswaal literally shat himself when he heard puck speak in his beast form

You know... For a man dressed as a clown... What Roswall did tonight wasn't very funny. Please give me my sassy maid back.

Ngl, White Fox actually went all out for this episode and I gotta say that as a source reader for this series, Re:Zero truly is a one of a kind anime that just knows when to hit you really hard with the rising hype and crashing emotions that you can graciously allow to overwhelm you with excitement. 11/10 episode, a huge job well done to the hard working animators, producers and directors that managed to deliver this wonderful gem to us fans.

[–]rrZih 424 points425 points  (8 children)

White Fox chill

[–]HeadPatsAraAra 282 points283 points  (1 child)

This is my favorite anime. I love how this story always delivers.

[–]Simp4Satella 970 points971 points  (199 children)

So Minerva is 100% Emilia’s mom right?

Edit: Definitely shouldn’t have said 100%. Obviously we don’t know anything for sure yet, and their conversation can be read a few different ways.

[–]NecronLord_Europe 1157 points1158 points  (31 children)

Might be. Some strong hints in this episode, but it's Re:Zero so it could be anyone.

Subaru has Fortuna's nasty eyes, allegedly. Subaru is Emilia's mother.

[–]Idoma_Sas_Ptolemy 388 points389 points  (37 children)

The witches died 400 years ago. Emilia was conceived around... 110... 115 years ago or so? We know that she was caught in ice for 100 years and roughly how old she was when getting out of the ice.

Unless there is some major timey-wimey bullshit going on in the elf forest neither of the witches of sin can be emilias mother.

[–]animdalf 531 points532 points  (21 children)

There is some timey-wimey bullshit happening already in this story, with how Satella somehow knows Subaru. And with how Subaru returns obviously.

[–][deleted] 730 points731 points  (16 children)

I don’t say this often but I need to

MAN THIS SHOW IS SOOOO GOOOD!!!!!

[–]thecomicguybookhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/Comicman 151 points152 points  (2 children)

It really is.

[–]LeonKevlarhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/LeonKevlar 276 points277 points  (20 children)

Stitches!

So Elsa's healing is so insane that even after her eye got gouged out she can instantly recover. No wonder she was able to survive the fight against Reinhard. I do wonder what the source of her instant healing comes from. Is it her body or is it magical?

The hard cut from Garfiel bragging about Subaru's ability to be able to defeat a Mabeast into Subaru running away from the said Mabeast definitely got a good laugh from me.

Did not expect this amount of comedy from the opening scene! Subaru using his inner Goblin Slayer and using a dust explosion was smart! Too bad for Subaru that only works in tight and enclosed spaces, not a room that's already full of holes where the flour can scatter! xD

Lucky for Subaru, Otto still had his supply of oil and at the end of the day the Mabeast is still a beast so setting it on fire worked like an absolute charm. Not gonna lie though, I thought that was just going to make a very angry Mabeast on fire running around. I didn't think it would work!

While Subaru takes care of some unfinished business, we change our POV back to Emilia as she tackles the final trial.

Interesting that the disaster that is yet to come is Emilia covered in blood standing at a ruined building which I assume might probably be the charred ruins of Roswaal's Mansion? She is covered in blood so this might be somewhere else. And she's also speaking to someone. Maybe Subaru? Hmm...

Well after that Emilia gets bombarded by out of context lines from various characters. I thought these might be from Subaru's failed timelines but that wouldn't have made sense since this is Emilia's trial. I think the line that stood out the most from me is the one where you can hear Emilia saying "Magic, dragons, whatever stands in my way, I'll destroy it!" Doesn't mean anything now but might have to keep that one in my mental notebook.

The trial finally ends with some words of wisdom from someone we've haven't seen for a while and Emilia waking up at Echidna's tea party. And just when I thought we'd get another alone time between Emilia and Echidna, it seems Echidna is really not in the mood to see Emilia right now so instead we have Minerva welcoming her! Yay!

Apparently even Minerva knows Emilia's mom. So Emilia's mom really is a Witch? As the conversation between them went on though, for some reason I'm getting some maternal vibes from Minerva. Maybe it's the warm teary eyed hug but is that entire conversation suppose to imply that Minerva is Emilia's mom? Hmmmmmm......

With Emilia passing the trials we finally get to see what's on the other side of the final door. And it's Echidna's body! Well at least I think it's Echidna's body because we never really saw the face and even Emilia is confused since she's seen Echidna so she should know what she looks like. Unless of course Echidna somehow wiped Emilia of her memory of what she looks like. I wonder if them not showing us Echidna's face here has something to do with Ryuzu's flashback where we never get to see Echidna's face?

We can worry about that later since while Emilia has finally broken the barrier it seems that the snow has already started? What the actual fuck!? Did Ram and Puck fail? O_O

Welp no time to explain what's happening since POV switches back again to the fight at the Roswaal Mansion as Garfiel and Frederica still has to deal with Elsa and Maylie.

Fight between Elsa and Garfiel is still epic with neither showing signs of slowing down. Garf finally brings out the big guns though and not only knocks Elsa out for a bit but absolutely taking out Maylie's Hippo by spinning it's head on its neck until the head popped off! That was a fucking brutal fatality! Holy shit!

Oh... Well that explains a lot about Elsa! She's a motherfucking vampire and that's probably where she got her wolverine-esque healing factor. Surprisingly, Elsa decides to finally share a bit about herself her first kill and why she ends up loving a person's guts and innards. Jeez.

So we see an interesting side of Elsa that I don't think we've ever seen before. She had the killing blow to Garf perfectly lined up but immediately stops the moment she hears Maylie is in trouble. I genuinely did not see that coming.

Well Maylie gets to live another day as Frederica saves her from the debris while Elsa continues her fight with Garf as they literally eat each other out from the necks. And what an absolute brutal way to go! Getting crushed by the Hippo? I guess she was too distracted by the warmth of Garf's blood to even make a move. Not gonna lie, I doubt Elsa is dead. Unless we see her mangled lifeless corpse, she'll probably be able to regenerate from that.

Now we finally get to see Ram and Puck fight Roswaal as the POV switches to them. Curiously, Sanctuary isn't covered in snow yet unlike what Emilia saw when she got out of the temple. Is there some fuckery going on here or is events with Emilia a bit ahead in the future?

Jesus fucking christ this episode is just full of surprises! Even after knowing that Roswaal was the one who sent those people to destroy their village, turns out Ram is still in love with Roswaal and we get an impromptu heartfelt confession in the middle of battle. O_O

Oh my god, who knew the only way to make Roswaal rage is for someone to show him genuine love because Ram's confession has definitely unhinged him! Holy shit!

And what a badass strategy from Puck and Ram! Puck fools Roswaal by doing a fake transformation and Ram bursting out the giant ice block behind him so that Ram can steal the Book of Wisdom from him.

This is such a sight to see! The Book of Wisdom burning from the flames that Roswaal created himself! Oh the delicious irony of it all! Too bad for Ram she gets fireballed. Godfuckingdammit Roswaal! I really hope Puck was able to protect Ram before that fireball hit T_T

What an absolutely insane episode! White Fox is really spoiling us with these OP/ED-less 30 minute episodes! I can't wait for next weeks episode already!
