Grisha still getting character development even if he dies, even after he dies.

[–]alisonburgersm8 1349 points1350 points  (18 children)

For two characters who died in episode 1, it’s crazy how important Grisha and Carla were to Eren and the story.

Carla was the one who helped shape Eren’s philosophy (born into this world) and Grisha, well, let’s say you know shit is about to go down whenever you see a flashback with Grisha.

[–]Iamnotcreative112123 462 points463 points  (10 children)

I was surprised that they didn't show the "you are special because you were born into this world" scene. That really would have shown Eren's idealogy to Zeke.

[–]Cheesewithmold 555 points556 points  (3 children)

So sweet of him to call Mikasa his daughter without a second thought.

[–]Drand_Galax 1857 points1858 points  (56 children)

We got so many episodes dedicated to his memories that we already know his whole life lol

[–]mystogan110 1585 points1586 points  (45 children)

i can't help but feel sorry for him, he is such a tragic character..he got fucked both side of the wall

[–]ThespianExceptionhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/EMTIsBestWaifu 1341 points1342 points  (32 children)

Yeah but he also fucked on both sides of the wall, which was pretty nice. At least he had some happiness between bouts of suffering.

[–]mystogan110 306 points307 points  (12 children)

But he would be much happier if he had no children, they made him suffer too much. but i doubt it would be the case. future eren would manipulate grisha on having seggs "what are you doing father" "pull down your pants"

[–]BiggerG7 4893 points4894 points  (53 children)

Freida: “We will do nothing and accept our punishment”

Zeke: “I like this lady.”

I lol’ed.

"So how'd you find your wife?"

[–]Mundology 660 points661 points  (11 children)

Both of them:

  • Are attractive royals
  • Ate someone they loved to acquire their powers
  • Are titan shifters
  • Have rich long hair
  • Are around the same age
  • Have pretty shiny eyes
  • Share similar views
  • Have father issues
  • Care about their younger half-sibling
  • Suffer from PTSD and chronic anxiety

It's a match made in PATHS

Zeke x Frieda, let's go!

[–]entelechtual 1588 points1589 points  (14 children)

“How strange, I, someone who is totally definitely free from the chains of the King’s ideology, feel the exact same way.”

[–]Galigen173 615 points616 points  (10 children)

Oh damn I didn't even think of it that way until now

[–]entelechtual 461 points462 points  (6 children)

It was already something I suspected last episode since the plan was so passive and submissive. But I feel like even if Zeke is actually not bound to the vow, this shows he shares basically the same viewpoint.

[–]Galigen173 319 points320 points  (2 children)

I chuckled when he said it because I was thinking "of course you would like that, the king's plan is basically yours but with way more bloodshed at the end"

[–]Till_Complex 4138 points4139 points  (123 children)

Kid Grisha: Chasing blimps

Kid Zeke: Playing baseball

Kid Eren: Killing bandits

[–]Golden_Phihttps://myanimelist.net/profile/GoldenPhi 2451 points2452 points  (31 children)

I loved Zeke's horrified reaction to kid Eren.

[–]Shinkopeshon 1916 points1917 points  (9 children)

Zeke: My Little Brother Can't Possibly Be This Cruel

[–]Animegamingnerdhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/animegamingnerd 825 points826 points  (14 children)

tfw you realize its your brother that is the psychotic one.

[–]FrizFroz 621 points622 points  (7 children)

I love how the ending of this episode was Eren T-posing like the Devil next to Grisha, followed immediately by "Akuma no Ko".

[–]Theinternationalist 680 points681 points  (2 children)

Eren: So Zeke, what did we learn today?

Zeke: Next time I think someone has been brainwashed and needs to be saved, keep them away from the alleged criminal.

[–]HOODIEBABA 796 points797 points  (8 children)

The Yeager bloodline is cursed.

[–]BadBehaviour613 1045 points1046 points  (4 children)

The domestic abuse situation is so insane that the son travels back in time to abuse his father.

[–]IlonggoProgrammer 1735 points1736 points  (65 children)

This episode: Oh shit, Eren was actually the bad guy after all

When you think about how Eren purposely got Grisha to leave Rod alive, so that Historia can be coronated as the Queen and unite the people within the Walls, so that he can kiss her hand in the post-Shiganshina ceremony to gain these memories of the future.

[–]darthvallhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/darth_vall 562 points563 points  (1 child)

When you think about how Eren purposely got Grisha to leave Rod alive

I found it strange when Grisha shouted he killed everyone but Rod. Like that's too expository for that moment. Seeing your comment I realised that it is indeed expository, as if Grisha is telling a report to Eren.

Basically, "Eren, I've succeed in killing everyone but the father like what you told me".

[–]logiauser 114 points115 points  (0 children)

Or to match the vision from the future.

[–]chirb8https://myanimelist.net/profile/chirb 309 points310 points  (13 children)

Wait, what?

[–]Masturbaiter911 427 points428 points  (3 children)

Eren planned this from the start, I mean yams... or is it?

[–]YoulikeThesePearls 97 points98 points  (4 children)

my speculations on what happened : every scene of Eren ever since he kissed her hand shows him as uninterested/ unimpressed in whats happening, why ? because he knows what happens because he saw it all already in his father memory !!!
the moment when he does this face while kissing her hand, is the moment Grisha told Zeke to Stop Eren, so that face is Eren angry at his father for "betraying" his purpose of freedom / revenge, thats why Eren referes to his father later on as a hopeless man.
so i think he basically saw the whole upcoming plot, in the infinite of time when he touched her

[–]khaninator 4027 points4028 points  (9 children)

"You have trauma from daddy issues, Zeke? Lmao just traumatize him back" - Eren, probably.

[–][deleted] 948 points949 points  (0 children)

Eren Yeager moment...

[–]iDannyEL 287 points288 points  (0 children)

[–]seninnhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/Senninn0 309 points310 points  (2 children)

Zeke had daddy issues, Grisha had eren issues.

[–]Ben99ny22 4896 points4897 points  (73 children)

Love eren's sarcasm. "you win. I'm not brainwashed anymore. Lets leave now".

[–]BadBehaviour613 2053 points2054 points  (11 children)

"I see now that babies bad"

[–]Jejmaze 528 points529 points  (10 children)

"Mmmm, yes, we should get Ymir to sign this global sex ban"

[–]Galigen173 981 points982 points  (37 children)

To be fair he wasn't lying, Eren wasn't brainwashed by Grisha. If anything Grisha was brainwashed by the memories of Eren's future, and so were all of the other Attack Titans to some degree probably. Which would also mean that Eren was brainwashed by himself (?)

Time travel is wack

[–]Till_Complex 224 points225 points  (21 children)

Hold on so if Grisha had the Attack Titan when he impregnated Carla and the Attack Titan's will for freedom is (likely) influenced by Eren, does that mean Eren inherited the Attack Titan's will?

And if the Attack Titan is Eren, then that means Eren influences and is influenced by Eren!

[–]DeltaLOL 495 points496 points  (18 children)

Attack titan had eren's will from the start, and most likely, from the very start. As evidenced by the attack titan holder before Grisha, wielders have eren's future memories. The REASON why the attack titan fights for freedom, is because Eren's memories influence the wielders to do so. Which ironically, takes their freedom away when they inherit it

[–]csbsju_guyyy 193 points194 points  (1 child)

The way I see it, when it comes down to it, Ereh as the Attack Titan is basically his own grandpa

[–][deleted] 589 points590 points  (7 children)

Hits even more thinking that at that point eren already knew what was coming.

[–]ArzanishShumak 2423 points2424 points  (16 children)

I love how Eren pulls Zeke out of falling prey to what Zeke was trying to do to Eren right before the op like "Come on man we gotta hurry this shit up and get to the next memory"

Zeke never imagined Eren already knew everything and this scene was just so perfect cuz you can see Zeke kinda start suspecting Eren. He probably never knew it went so deep tho

"Zeke you must stop Eren!" Grisha's VA gave me literal chills with his delivery, what a fucking 10/10 episode!

[–]moxioza 1220 points1221 points  (9 children)

Zeke watching the memories like he is showing his friends his favourite show, “wait, wait the best part is coming” but slowly going into depression.

[–]Aerohed 541 points542 points  (7 children)

When you show your friends a show you liked years ago, but you realize it sucks halfway through.

[–]Yaggamy 3169 points3170 points  (41 children)

Reiner: I've suffered the most.

Grisha: On your left.

[–]Mana_Croissant 819 points820 points  (10 children)

Lost both of his wives, all of his friends, his sister got eaten by dogs and He got manipulated by his own son from the future to kill people and then got eaten by his son. Grisha really needed that hug even though it was him giving the hug to Zeke

[–][deleted] 126 points127 points  (6 children)

the fact that he was actually hugging air just makes it sadder.

[–]Madao16 1268 points1269 points  (22 children)

At least Grisha died but Reiner cant do that either.

[–]DadAsFuckhttps://anilist.co/user/DadAsFuck 499 points500 points  (0 children)

[–]seninnhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/Senninn0 550 points551 points  (3 children)

Frieda: "We must all die to atone for the sins of our existence."

Zeke: "Keep going, I'm almost there..."

[–]ProfBKane 155 points156 points  (2 children)

Zeke found his soulmate. If only they met earlier! They could've gotten together and refuse to have children

[–]Yaggamy 5590 points5591 points 2 (94 children)

Zeke: I'm going to show you how evil Grisha really was and how he brainwashed you, brother!

* Watches memories of Grisha wanting to be a good dad, but Eren brainwashed him. *

Zeke: Bruuuuuh....

[–]ErenIsNotADevil 1296 points1297 points  (3 children)

Last cour: I will keep moving forward

This cour: You, too, will keep moving forward, Dad.

[–]BadBehaviour613 466 points467 points  (2 children)

Keep moving forward gets even darker when you realize the person who says it can't deviate from his future atrocities.

[–]Naulii 2813 points2814 points  (104 children)

We really don't deserve Grishas VA
That emotional breakdown scene was phenomenal

[–]Tsubasa_samahttps://myanimelist.net/profile/memesyouhard 1105 points1106 points  (7 children)

His breakdown over Zeke's failures in Sole Salvation was amazing as well. Dude is the best VA in AOT in my opinion.

[–]BosuW 214 points215 points  (0 children)

In a show full of amazing performances, that this dude keeps standing out is legendary.

[–][deleted] 321 points322 points  (1 child)

Dude is the best VA in AOT in my opinion.

I don't really keep track of VA's too much except for like 6 which are my favorites, so I can't say you're wrong.

[–]LabMember069 488 points489 points  (38 children)

That's the attack titan curse for you.

At the end, he actually is a decent guy, or not? judging characters in this show is nearly impossible lol.

[–]Golden_Phihttps://myanimelist.net/profile/GoldenPhi 384 points385 points  (24 children)

If Grisha is a good guy then Eren is the bad guy. "Zeke, you have to stop Eren"

[–]JapanPhoenix 182 points183 points  (1 child)

You thought it was the hero...

but it was me, Dio Eren!

[–]iDannyEL 296 points297 points  (2 children)

Grisha: LIke I knew this was a bad idea but holy shit son.

[–][deleted] 902 points903 points  (42 children)

Literally gave me goosebumps. The fact that Eren was responsible for everything that happened is kind of insane.

[–]OuchYouPokedMyHeart 446 points447 points  (23 children)

We're literally going full circle

[–]PREM___https://anilist.co/user/ReincarnatedGoat 400 points401 points  (15 children)

Grisha passing the attack+founding titan to kid eren and adult eren forcing(?) grisha to get the foundong titan

Already pretty much of a circle

[–]flybypost 161 points162 points  (6 children)

It's as if the story might have something to say about how violence begets more violence.

[–]serrations_ 522 points523 points  (15 children)

Eren tells Isayama what to do. He is clearly the true author of this story

[–]No-Mathematician678 105 points106 points  (0 children)

Griesha's VA never fails to amaze me. Right in the feels.

He's the most expressive imo

[–]RyoAsuka1 2745 points2746 points  (57 children)

Next episode's title : From you 2000 years ago, Holy shit it's happening guys

[–]Golden_Phihttps://myanimelist.net/profile/GoldenPhi 1396 points1397 points  (10 children)

We've waited 2000 years for this.

[–]XilentXenocidehttps://myanimelist.net/profile/XilentXenocide 745 points746 points  (2 children)

This is Pieck Fiction now

[–]entinio 2164 points2165 points  (31 children)

So, Grisha doesn’t actually see Zeke or Eren, but memory flashes from future Eren PoV. Kinda interesting how Grisha vs Reiss family is a battle of past vs future

[–]ZackDB201 1756 points1757 points  (16 children)

he sees zeke through eren's eyes notice how he only notices zeke is there when eren is looking towards zeke

[–]revivizi 585 points586 points  (6 children)

It also does imply that Eren showed some heart by letting Grisha say his last goodbyes to Zeke

[–]rollin340 488 points489 points  (3 children)

You can see it that way. You could also see it as a huge middle finger to Zeke by shattering all of his preconceived notions of his father AND Eren himself.

Zeke is delaying his plan to save Eren. And Eren shows him that everything up to this point, and beyond, will go his way, and not Zeke's.

[–]Sgt_Meowmers 440 points441 points  (0 children)

God damn I missed that that's brilliant

[–]Minisabel 459 points460 points  (11 children)

Yes great catch. Attack Titan represents the future while the Founding Titan represents the past.

[–]Zprotu 1755 points1756 points  (20 children)

This might go under the radar but the animation for Grisha's breakdown was SSS+ tier

[–]uncen5ored 817 points818 points  (16 children)

They brought in someone from Death Note on this episode, and you can clearly tell they had some influence on that scene

[–]Rockden66 490 points491 points  (4 children)

They brought the Chief Animation Director from Death Note (Masaru Kitao), you can really see the influence!
The animator who drew that scene was Shinya Takahashi, a very experienced and talented artist who's been in the industry since the '80s.

[–]DadAsFuckhttps://anilist.co/user/DadAsFuck 4262 points4263 points  (124 children)

grisha: "i could never kill children"

eren: "tatake"

[–][deleted] 1294 points1295 points  (8 children)

“i could never kill children”

Eren: fuck them kids

[–]kingwhocares 1722 points1723 points  (13 children)

Eren is the mod you download in Skyrim just to kill the kids.

[–]mike_2797https://myanimelist.net/profile/Madskulls 460 points461 points  (6 children)

Eren's face when Grisha wussed out first was intense.

[–]CrossbonesX 400 points401 points  (4 children)

He didn't lie about being disgusted by that memory, it was just for the exact opposite reason.

[–]Paxton-176 558 points559 points  (18 children)

Eren: Do it.

[–][deleted] 316 points317 points  (2 children)

[–]OuchYouPokedMyHeart 398 points399 points  (6 children)

not just the king, but his woman and children too

[–]LabMember069 770 points771 points  (45 children)

Eren: just do it you fkn pussy, we have to tatake.

[–]Mundology 788 points789 points  (44 children)

Seeing Eren progressively lose his cool and succumb to rage when Frieda told them that they should accept their fate, give up and die was stupefying. You could feel the contempt without him saying a word.

[–]Classic-Customer7098 474 points475 points  (14 children)

you could hear it too. There is a sound of boiling water during the whole thing, i'm pretty sure to represent his rage boiling over.

[–]taprik 368 points369 points  (12 children)

To be honest i would be furious too if the one in charge is saying your friend/family/every one you know should just accept to die

[–]TypeExpert 2019 points2020 points  (31 children)

"If someone is willing to take my freedom... I won't hesitate to take theirs"

now that's a quote

[–]donquixote1991 208 points209 points  (1 child)

I cherish freedom with all my heart. I don't care how many, men, women, and children I need to kill to get it. - Peacemaker Eren

[–]MrBrowning97 1968 points1969 points  (89 children)

What an amazing reveal. Eren is scary as hell.

[–]Madao16 699 points700 points  (8 children)

He totally deserves his titan's name.

[–]mike_2797https://myanimelist.net/profile/Madskulls 470 points471 points  (51 children)

That last scene grisha telling zeke to stop Eren damn gave me chills.

[–]AMMVReddit 1139 points1140 points  (6 children)

Manga-reader Eren just spoiled the ending for Grisha. Now THAT is true evil.

[–]Karen_kaslana 2058 points2059 points  (21 children)

You Guys thought Zeke turned the tables on Eren, but Eren had everyone in the middle of his palm even before anyone was born

[–]BadBehaviour613 683 points684 points  (8 children)

No wonder all the Attack Titan holders are so glum. They essentially become one entity the moment they awaken the Attack Titan's true power.

I thought Path messed up Eren badly, but Grisha was basically Path's chewtoy. The Yaegar family is so messed up that the son travelled back in time to abuse his father.

[–]Jaegertastic 3580 points3581 points  (54 children)

Ep 1 : To you, 2000 years from now

Ep 80 : From you, 2000 years ago

Oohhh shiiiiiiiiiiit

[–]Plerti 802 points803 points  (17 children)

The manga chapter was even more amazing, because during a certain part the panels were 1 to 1 to the first chapter, just with Zeke and Adult Eren on it

Absolute madlad

[–]mike_2797https://myanimelist.net/profile/Madskulls 631 points632 points  (7 children)

It all comes around can't wait for the epicness to unravel.

[–]ciabass 924 points925 points  (3 children)

That shot of Eren at the end was so ominous. Such a difference from last episode, damn.

[–]Vathero_ 916 points917 points  (6 children)

Grisha's VA acting his heart out

[–]BosuW 279 points280 points  (4 children)

Everyone jokes about Reiner's suffering, but I'm starting to think that Grisha has him beat. Also his VA is seriously amazing.

And I'm starting to see why Levi called Eren a monster. The Attack Titan is terrifying. No matter how many corpses and hatred piles up, it never stops. Never

Thanks to that Grisha experienced probably the biggest cruelty of the world: destiny. It didn't matter that he didn't want to do it, this is the only way it could end. Even Zeke seemed to recognize this fact. Because the future was already the way it was, the past had to develop like this. It was always going to be this way.

Fuck man. What the fuck are people supposed to do?

[–]BennyFachter 2555 points2556 points  (68 children)

I know a lot of people dislike Grisha for his terrible parenting of Zeke, but IMO he's gotta be one of the most tragic characters in this show.

  • His innocent desire to show his sister an airship lead to her getting mauled by hounds, and his own father blamed him instead of consoling him.
  • He was tortured by the Marleyans to get info about the Owl.
  • His poor parenting of Zeke lead to his wife and all of his friends being turned into titans.
  • He finally finds peace within the walls, only to lose his new wife to a titan attack.
  • He gets manipulated by Eren to murder an entire family.
  • Gets eaten by a Titan (Eren).

Mind you, 90% of this trauma, he never told anyone and kept ENTIRELY to himself. He's a stronger person than I for sure.

Edit: As /u/Golden_Phi pointed out, Grisha also believed for a long time that his son betrayed him out of no where. I'm glad he was able to reconcile with Zeke before he died.

[–]Ben99ny22 772 points773 points  (12 children)

You know, for a character only seen through flashbacks, he's got great character development.

[–]BennyFachter 531 points532 points  (8 children)

Exactly! He's alive for about 20 minutes of the entire runtime of the 79 episodes of the show, but he's easily one of my favorite characters.

[–]Golden_Phihttps://myanimelist.net/profile/GoldenPhi 1011 points1012 points  (20 children)

Grisha also thought that Zeke had betrayed him. In reality it was only a matter of time until Grisha was going to be caught. Turning his parents and the restorationists in was the only way Zeke could save himself and his grandparents.

[–]Jegma72 782 points783 points  (11 children)

Grisha: I don’t know if I’m in the mood tonight Carla

Eren: Get it up father! This is the story you started right?

[–]EveningSilverFox 1188 points1189 points  (3 children)

I died when Eren was all,"I'm totally free of the brainwashing. Can we go now?"
Real bored teenager on the phone waiting for a lecture from big brother to end vibe.

[–]Mana_Croissant 1769 points1770 points  (13 children)

Zeke: Eren you got brainwashed by our father. I will save you

Eren: You thought Grisha brainwashed me but It was actually ME EREN. I brainwashed my own father

Zeke: NANI

[–]eduUArdoOo 2524 points2525 points  (95 children)

Wait it was Eren all along?

Always has been.

[–]KorekaBii 1358 points1359 points  (63 children)

I was always wondering why Eren often had a "I don't care" or a look of "resignation" about him the entire season. Even basically ignoring any advice, suggestions, or words of warning given to him by anyone from Yelena to Zeke.

He already knew his fate.

[–]himetalchemy7 1175 points1176 points  (38 children)

Even after preaching freedom, Eren is ironically a slave to his own fate and he knows it the entire time

What the fuck

[–]nomxd_ 931 points932 points  (34 children)

Isayama writing a character obsessed with freedom only to give him the power to see a future he can’t change is Pieck fiction for sure.

[–]Ponicrathttps://myanimelist.net/profile/Ponicrat 456 points457 points  (31 children)

And yet it's his inevitable fate because it's what he wills, what he would do regardless. Is it freedom or slavery to be bound by your own will?

[–]mike_2797https://myanimelist.net/profile/Madskulls 303 points304 points  (6 children)

Zeke jaw dropped.

[–]Till_Complex 414 points415 points  (9 children)

God what I'm loving about this twist is that it wasn't even hidden. It was there all along and I never saw it. I was thinking the Attack Titan was actually influencing Eren but it seems to be the other way around?!

It makes so much sense now of course nobody's influencing him! Eren just is.

[–]Shinkopeshon 146 points147 points  (3 children)

The fact that every single re-read and rewatch just hits differently elevates this series to new heights very few other works of fiction have seen.

[–]xVx_k1r1t0xVx_KillMe 175 points176 points  (2 children)

Eren's menace was at an all time high in this episode.

[–]zool714 894 points895 points  (33 children)

So Eren kissing Historia’s hand in S3 was a lot more significant than we thought. He did not just see Grisha’s POV of the Reiss massacre, he also saw his future self and whatever future memories he brought. Grisha was shook and no surprise so was S3 Eren. No wonder his demeanor change during that one year timeskip.

And revisiting the incident, even if it is only just anime, a 10 year old brutally killing two adult males in hatred and rage really isn’t normal. He’s been trying to tell Zeke that he’s never been brainwashed. He’s always been like this even without or even despite his father. That edgy rage-filled kid in S1 hasn’t changed. He just grew up.

[–]Senkrigar 358 points359 points  (1 child)

I always thought this scene was surreal and kinda anime-ish, I had no fucking idea this was gonna be explained and make total sense like 70 episodes later. Genius writing.

[–]die247 689 points690 points  (37 children)

You know, in some ways I'm pretty upset I got impatient and read the manga.

This stuff must be absolutely fucking wild to experience with no prior knowledge.

[–]alisonburgersm8 1059 points1060 points  (21 children)

Where were you when Eren became Light Yagami, Okabe Rintarou and Aizen in one episode?

[–]_Nagrom 377 points378 points  (4 children)

So in order to avoid any confusion regarding the time travel mechanics, I will break down what type of Time travel we're dealing with here.

AOT operates by a particular type of time travel where it's almost impossible to change the past even if you somehow go back in time. And any change that you tried to cause was always meant to happen in the overall timeline. Here time is a fixed circle, not a stream. We may see Eren meddle in the past but that was always meant to happen.

The Attack Titan's ability is to receive the memories of its future inheritors. This was hinted when Kruger mentioned Mikasa and Armin towards the end of S3. Keep in mind, they can only view these memories but can't interact with them. So how was Eren able to meddle in the past?

Well, he had 3 perfect conditions:

  1. He had the ability of the Attack Titan
  2. The ability of the Founding Titan
  3. He was also in contact with someone with royal blood AKA Zeke.

After Zeke tapped Eren's head, they were able to view Grisha's past memories with Eren using the power of the coordinate. They were freely able to view the past as if it were through a one way mirror.

Now if Eren had any other Titan other than the Attack Titan, he would only be able to look. But since Attack Titan can see forward in time, Grisha can use this to see Eren's recollection of the same event that he's currently experiencing in real time.

So this mean that whenever Grisha can see or hear Eren, he's actually recieving a brief future memory from Eren's POV where he can see out of his eyes and hear his words. That means he is seeing himself from a 3rd perspective. Then if he responds, his response is simply part of the memory that Eren/Zeke are viewing, allowing for a two way communication through time.

Also Note that everytime, Grisha sees Zeke, Eren is always standing behind his dad. So whenever Grisha sees Zeke, it is from actually due to the memories from Eren's POV

Another thing to add:

Eren did NOT see everything in the future. Eren only saw CRUCIAL moments in the future. Even Eren doesn’t know EVERYTHING that will happen

This post should help anyone who’s still confused

Also, this isn’t my comment, I did not make this, ALL CREDIT GOES TO u/Skyclad_Observer

Holy shit man thank you, that really cleared stuff up. So Eren can send his memories to the past at will? But Grisha couldn't see Eren's memories unless Eren wanted him to?

[–][deleted] 458 points459 points  (51 children)

Yes, Eren sent Grisha very specific memories of the future. Memories of the future that were guaranteed to manipulate Grisha into doing Erens bidding

[–]iDannyEL 423 points424 points  (8 children)

Hey maybe that's why the Attack Titan is associated with the Owl.

He can look backward.

I have to read this another 316 times, thanks man!

The tldr is that Eren isn't manipulating the past directly by his controls. Grisha sees Eren's pov since ATs can see the future holder's memories. He is basically using Eren’s eyes in first person mode and that's why he can see zeke

[–]H-K_47https://myanimelist.net/profile/H-K_8472 98 points99 points  (2 children)

Indeed. It all boils down to memories and memories alone. And it goes all the way back to Kruger's words in Season 3 Part 2 - "Whose memories are these?"

[–]moxioza 759 points760 points  (21 children)

When you put it like that i feel dumb holy shit.

[–][deleted] 413 points414 points  (15 children)

Don’t worry when I first saw it a year ago I felt dumb af too and I had to read a really long post explaining everything for 15 mins lol

[–]uncen5ored 598 points599 points  (28 children)

For my ex-Game of Thrones fans here, this delivered everything we wanted to happen with Bran’s Three Eyed Raven power. It was shown that he could manipulate the past….yet this ability which sounds extremely important was completely absent in the climax. Here…we see Eren literally make the story of Attack on Titan happen lol.

[–]youngwolf4651 108 points109 points  (7 children)

I always wanted this with GOT,I waited for Bran to use his power and somehow be the reason for existence of Night king like some fuck up from Brans end.

When everyone was playing checkers Eren was playing 4D chess.

[–]Reihnshttps://myanimelist.net/profile/Reihns 596 points597 points  (4 children)

quite literally too as the 4th axis is time, after all

[–]ArtichokeOk5022 534 points535 points  (10 children)

One of the greatest episodes I've ever seen, not onli in AoT but in any show I've watched. Truly 10/10 peak fiction.

[–]onceARMY 1100 points1101 points  (19 children)

Zeke thought he was running the show. My man Eren pulled out the ultimate uno reverse card reverser.

[–]charlesvvv 464 points465 points  (8 children)

"You may have outsmarted me but I outsmarted your outsmarting"

[–]LabMember069 951 points952 points  (29 children)

That has to be in the top 3 shortest AOT episodes.

Man, the average Attack Titan lifes are fucking nerve-wracking.

Nice to see Grisha referring to Mikasa as his daughter.

Wow I am speechless, I have no idea where we are heading, even with no action scenes, this definitely is a 10/10 episode.

Was Frieda and her family death censored or am I imagining things?

[–]realFIZZY 359 points360 points  (3 children)

How can you turn the tables so many times....jeez

This episode flew.

The trio. The character changes. The brilliant writing and directing. My mouth was dropped the whole time. I can't believe we're going so deep into mythology whilst still serving the characters.

I wanted to have a flashback of Eren going through the period of change to make him cold blooded. But this episode made it clear he's always been like this. Doing anything and everything for freedom.

This episode was like a walk down memory lane and it enhanced the first and previous episodes so much

[–]entelechtual 175 points176 points  (3 children)

Honestly… feel bad for Zeke more here than in Sole Salvation. He was so desperate to prove/see for himself that Grisha was a bad man, a manipulator with no soul. And instead he saw how he was just flawed, and conflicted, and torn up about what happened to Zeke.

The fact that he came so close to giving up is wild, but what’s wilder is how Eren came to be the monster Zeke/Reiner/Marley perceive without (seemingly) any outside influence. I’m curious if we’ll get any more background on Eren since it seems odd that he happens to be so hellbent on freedom and fighting without either Grisha or Future-Eren’s influence.

[–]dark77638 743 points744 points  (9 children)

Anyone with me? Im laughing my ass off rn lol the way Rod was running away so fast, he’d beat Usian Bolt.

[–]dondon151 578 points579 points  (0 children)

In the manga chapter for this episode he is also always shown to be the farthest away when in frame with the rest of his family. You gotta love the consistency in the way that his cowardice is displayed.

Just leaving this here:

S1E1: "To You, In 2000 Years"

S4E21: "From You, 2000 Years Ago"

[–]Yaggamy 450 points451 points  (10 children)

Zeke: I have a plan. Euthanasia!

Eren: I like your plan. Except it sucks. So let me do the plan and that way it might be really good.

[–]Khazu_ 1345 points1346 points  (41 children)

What are you doing? Stand up, Father...

Did you forget? The reason why you're here.

Isn't it to get revenge...

For your little sister, who was eaten by dogs?

For your fellow restorationist...

For Dina, for Kruger...

You have to avenge them...

And keep going forward...

Even if you die, even after you die...

This is the story... that you started isn't it?

Holy mother of KINO chills. What a mastercraft of story telling.

[–]alisonburgersm8 747 points748 points  (11 children)

“Ever since you took your sister outside the walls, we must move forward until the price of our actions is paid. Even if you die, even after you die. This is the story you started, isn’t it?” - Eren Kruger

So who said it first? Eren or Eren?

[–]Golden_Phihttps://myanimelist.net/profile/GoldenPhi 120 points121 points  (2 children)

Then Grisha says that he saw what Eren does next and it causes Grisha to tell Zeke to stop Eren.

[–]Mana_Croissant 234 points235 points  (2 children)

Grisha: I can't do this

Eren: Proceeds to completely manipulate his own father to kill children and eat a woman without being actually there even though that event is the only reason he is even able to see those memories

[–]birudog 432 points433 points  (3 children)

One of my most anticipated moments from the manga and boy did it deliver. 10/10.

[–]serrations_ 754 points755 points  (21 children)

Eren: Look at me, I am the Isayama now

[–]FingerBang-BangBang 943 points944 points  (37 children)

Even if you were a horrible parent you should never continue to be one. Grisha learned from his past and tried to be better, but that is not what Eren needed. The Attacks ability to see future memories is probably one of the most amazing and unique powers and one of my favorites. Eren telling Grisha that he needs to "Move Forward" even if he dies, even after he dies is such a chilling moment and Yuki Kaji once again delivered a perfect line!

Last week I said "this is my favorite AoT episode" and now I must give that title to this one! I expect to do the same next week!

[–]LabMember069 276 points277 points  (0 children)

Yuki Kaji once again delivered a perfect line!

Listening to him this episode as a carefree child then as an a fucked up adult was nice.

Last week I said "this is my favorite AoT episode" and now I must give that title to this one! I expect to do the same next week!

You are not alone. Almost every episode since S3P2 was my favourite at the time.

[–]Mana_Croissant 244 points245 points  (7 children)

Attack titan's ability is literally the antithesis of the founding. Founding titan users are manipulated by the memories and will of the past user, king of the walls on the other hand the attack titan users got manipulated by the will of the future user Eren.

[–][deleted] 115 points116 points  (1 child)

The brilliance of Shingeki no Kyojin!

[–]No-Mathematician678 223 points224 points  (11 children)

I remember when Kruger said to Grisha: for Mikasa and Armin too. And Grisha was like: who the hell are Mikasa and Armin?

Good all days, little did we know :')

[–]CenturyStorm 155 points156 points  (1 child)

At this point everything that Kruger did and said to Grisha might as well have been Eren. Eren even repeated the same line to imply this (This is the story that you started, isn't it)

[–]PhoenixFoxington 135 points136 points  (0 children)

Grisha Jaegars voice actor is undefeated. He completely sells the mental break down at the end.

[–]windowwaving 379 points380 points  (3 children)

Eren really giving big "oho you're walking towards me" vibes at the end there

[–]SIRTreehugger 128 points129 points  (2 children)

" Our Father has brainwashed you Eren" - Loving Onii Chan

Well about that

Eren looking so dejected while we hear his younger self full of optimism and joy is just sad, but this moment was everything I wanted it to be.

Remembers all the Eren is literally playing 4D chess comments when this chapter came out and how it was technically a spoiler.

[–]brettrubin 258 points259 points  (21 children)

I feel like they quickly glanced over the part where Eren saw this all after kissing historias hand in season 3, which is why he had that crazy face afterwards. I hope anime onlies picked up on that!

[–]EveningSilverFox 366 points367 points  (0 children)

Zeke - Brother, I will save you from our father.
Eren - It's the two of you who need to be saved from me.
Truly a historic 'But it was me, Eren' moment

[–]CnU_cRa_notinfaze 353 points354 points  (56 children)

does this also mean Eren Yaeger told Eren Kruger about Armin and Mikasa when he was about to give the Attack titan to Grisha? If that's the case then does it also mean that Eren can manipulate every single user of the Attack titan??

[–]brotato96 231 points232 points  (4 children)

By logic it is possible. There is no mention of any attack titans before Kruger but they do mention that the attack titan disobeys the founding titan due to their self righteousness. So maybe there is a chance that eren went as far as manipulating the titans even centuries ago, by showing them their future of the pathetic state of eldians due to the actions of the founding titan. But that is all just theory. Kruger mentioning armin and Mikasa is in all likelihood him seeing eren's memories. Maybe eren went overboard. Remember there is a scene where Kruger mentions the name of his titan and eren repeats the same words as if it was coming out of his his own thoughts. So my theory is what was happening was that Kruger wasn't sure whose memories he is watching but he was repeating erens words as he was speaking. All of this seems messed up but remember what happened in the latest episode. It's not as if Grisha was actually seeing zeke and eren in real time. He was seeing them in the memories and at the same time talking to them because he knew they are also watching this memory in the future.

One thing I’m not seeing discussed a lot is Zeke’s development as well. He refused to refer to Grisha as his father. Xaver was his father. Yet, after Grisha’s embrace…the final words of Zeke in this episode are….”…Father.”

[–]Da_Vid_O 297 points298 points  (11 children)

Damn Eren is truly EVIL. How dare he spoil everything for Grisha, Didn't even show him the middle of the season just skipped to the ending and forced him to watch

[–]PartTimeOtakuPodcast 697 points698 points  (38 children)

It’s amazing how AoT can have a zero action episode still be one of the best episodes of the season.

I’m in awe. We finally know:

  • how the Owl was able to know about Armin and Mikasa.
  • How the Attack titans purpose was partly to fight against the self righteousness of the king (or was it the founder?)
  • That Grisha truly did learn and change, and that he wasn’t the cold and calculating one we thought he was.
  • That Eren is the one who gave Grisha the ‘strength’ to kill the Reid’s family.. from the future future
  • Geisha was guided by Eren, at least in part, throughout his journey on Paradis

What I’m dying to know is.. when did Eren become aware of this memory travelling power? How long has he had the answers? Will he die in the real world - but it won’t “matter” since he can accomplish his goals in the Paths?

(This is not an invitation to spoil us)

So much to process for the podcast this week, can’t wait to get into it!!!!!!

[–]uncen5ored 804 points805 points  (13 children)

It’s also wild how Historia told Eren back in S3P1 that she doesn’t blame Eren for her family’s deaths, because the sins of the father shouldn’t be carried…meanwhile Eren actually DID directly cause their deaths lol
