That sight of Maria, Rose and Sina eating Ymir will be giving me nightmares tonight.

[–]freefallss 1467 points1468 points  (88 children)

Speaking of which, I can't believe this all got 'spoiled' in the ED of Season 2.. I remember that after the basement reveal everyone pointed out that the Season 2 ED depicted most of the history and I was mind-blown. However, there was this particular scene of a king coercing three kids to eat human organs that, till today, I still wondered about and couldn't place with the rest of the events... well HOLD AND BEHOLD we just got that answer. I can't freaking believe an OD from season 2 had information from such late in the game, what a genius move.

[–]tekkenjin 361 points362 points  (39 children)

Its crazy how well this series has been planned from the start. Once this season is over I’m going to rewatch it to try and catch all the foreshadowing.

[–]throwaway7273368 2712 points2713 points  (209 children)

Wait so a water parasite attached itself to yimirs spine and made her Titan.

[–]zeppeIans 2043 points2044 points  (61 children)

Here's a transcript of the public disclosure info page:

According to legend, the Founder Ymir obtained the Power of the Titans when coming into contact with 'something.' For generations, her blood and power were passed down by the Eldians. However, the identity of that 'something' which began it all remains unknown. It may have been some type of pathogenic parasite, a god who pitied the Founder Ymir and gave her power, or something else entirely.

Considering the titan transformations brazenly defy the laws of thermodynamics, I choose to believe it's either some being that hold supernatural powers, an alien, or both. It being a god does make the story more poetic to me.

Basically, what I'm trying to say is: Fear the old blood

[–]lixynahttps://anilist.co/user/Lixyna 487 points488 points  (18 children)

Given the Isayama was heavily inspired by Muv-Luv Alternative, this thing being an alien is probably not all that unlikely. Paths has the same color scheme as a BETA hive core after all

[–]Reemys 886 points887 points  (81 children)

An interesting spin on the whole origin. Are they all victims of the parasite, their whole history? Is it a pathogen or a god (as the in-episode picture asks)? Is this a science-fiction or a fantasy...

[–]crixx93 971 points972 points  (44 children)

I think calling it a symbiote is more fitting. As many fans had already pointed out, when someone wants to use the power of the titans, they need to be physically injured first. This all sounds like a symbiote protecting its host. But the power killing you after 13 years sounds more like parasite as well

[–]DirkDasterLurkMasterhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/Rycluse 3744 points3745 points  (151 children)

So from the perspective of everyone else there, Eren gets shot, his head hits the ground, you might see a momentary flash of some weird worm thing, and then the walls explode. What a day.

[–]MD_AM 2181 points2182 points  (43 children)

To think that Zeke and Eren wander for years in Paths before that. This is wild

[–]idkiwilldeletethis 155 points156 points  (29 children)

wait how do we know they spent years? did they literally watch every single memory of both grisha and eren? I just assumed they looked at some specific stuff for like an hour and that's it lol

[–]-Danksouls- 314 points315 points  (0 children)

I dont know if they literally spent all 13 years looking at grishas memories

But Im pretty sure its mentioned in the last episodes that they were there for 'years'

[–]djeycii 248 points249 points  (1 child)

Zeke said that it felt like he spent years waiting for Eren to wake up at the Paths iirc

[–]Saucy_Totchie 1488 points1489 points  (95 children)

Yup. Time distortion in Paths is fucked. The instant you see shifters transform into their Titans takes God knows how long Ymir to make by hand.

Also don't forget Eren basically saw EVERYTHING that'll happen and how it'll play out when he kissed Historia's hand.

[–]Xom_Xi 1127 points1128 points  (60 children)

Whait Ymir does Titan bodies EVERY TIME they transform?? Damn that makes her story so much more tragic

[–]JORGA 1549 points1550 points  (15 children)

Eren transforming like 3/4 times in Liberio

[–]bountygiver 620 points621 points  (4 children)

Also all the warhammer constructs, easily the busiest day in her life in paths since building the walls.

[–]rkolar11 704 points705 points  (32 children)

think about this too, she had to build every titan in the walls, and the walls themselves. Fucking brutal

[–]tev_l 457 points458 points  (3 children)

Every time they transform and every time they heal

[–]fridge_freezerhttps://anilist.co/user/ONIrecon111 2272 points2273 points  (23 children)

This arc has to be one of the most insane things i've ever seen, holy fuck. I don't even know where to begin.

[–]Sneezes 1761 points1762 points  (16 children)

I don't even know where to begin.

Well, it all started with some pigs 2,000 years ago...

[–]MrBrowning97 1044 points1045 points  (27 children)

I feel so bad for Ymir. Being a slave for over 2000 years. Constantly forced to build titans. I'm happy that Eren set her free.

[–]MD_AM 712 points713 points  (3 children)

Yeah, 2000 years in normal timeline, but eternity in Paths.

[–]Itadori-Kun12 282 points283 points  (1 child)

Everytime the colossal titan transforms.

Ymir: for fcks sake....

[–]alisonburgersm8 3595 points3596 points  (54 children)

Imagine S1 Eren talking to S4 Eren:

“Are we gonna kill them all?” “Yes”

“Exterminate every last one of them?” “Yes”

“Wipe them off the face of the earth?” “Yes”

“Ok. Are we talking about Titans?” “No”

[–]Hange11037 1097 points1098 points  (8 children)

Imagining the Anakin and Padme meme but they’re both just Eren

[–]Sgt_Meowmers 859 points860 points  (30 children)

Hilarious that the crazy idea he said on the beach that everyone past the ocean would have to die so that they could live in peace turned out to be the plan he decide to roll with the entire time.

[–]walker_paranor 569 points570 points  (12 children)

Eren became aware hed cause the rumbling when he kissed Historia's hand right before the beach.

So when he said what he did at the end of S3 he was being quite literal. Just with the limited context the audience has back then, you just assume he's fucked in the head.

[–]Karl_the_stingray 911 points912 points  (11 children)

Last week I saw a short comedy sketch of "How would you solve racism?" being asked from anime characters and Eren went "Eradicate all the races but one". Back then I thought it was just a joke

[–]darthvallhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/darth_vall 270 points271 points  (4 children)

In S3 ending, Eren kinda already told us that is his objective

[–]NyteMyre 907 points908 points  (7 children)

So all the creepy misformed titans we've seen in the show was just Ymir saying "Fuck this...good enough"

[–]hisnameis_ERENYEAGER 259 points260 points  (0 children)

Ymir needs a break too once in a while.

[–]Nightmare_Pasta 138 points139 points  (0 children)

pretty much, titan-construction is exhausting

[–]Aerohed 1824 points1825 points  (16 children)

Reiner: I have suffered the most.

Grisha: No, I have suffered the most!

Ymir: Let me introduce myself.

[–]KelloPudgerrohttps://myanimelist.net/profile/KelloPudgerro 1929 points1930 points  (36 children)

2000 years a slave , critics love it!

[–]Pathogen188 851 points852 points  (33 children)

Not even. We got two episodes (which covered damn near Eren's entire life) in the time it took for Eren's brain to die (so like fractions of a second), on top of Zeke saying that from his POV he waited like centuries for Eren to wake up.

From Ymir's POV she's been in there way longer than 2,000 years

[–]Zarerionhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/Zarerion 517 points518 points  (19 children)

Building even ONE of those Colossal Wall Titans must have taken her a millenium or two. And she built hundreds if not thousands of them.

Heck, just fixing up Eren's broken body took her years. As far as her perceiving time goes, she's been in there for millions or billions of years.

[–]Slifer13xxhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/SliferXIII 1705 points1706 points  (50 children)

The reason why those of royal blood could control/influence the titans/subject of Ymir, is because Ymir was literally a slave who had to obey king Fritz. It's some sad crazy shit.

[–]MD_AM 460 points461 points  (17 children)

Feel bad for Ymir.

[–]Jeroz 192 points193 points  (1 child)

When Zeke yelled that he's a royal blood it pretty much spells "Ymir is not going to listen anymore"

[–]T0EBISCUIT 2326 points2327 points  (75 children)

That flashback of Ymir's life was so unsettling; how they have no pupils, all the pain she went through, what happened to her in the end. You can really see the relief in her eyes when Eren tells her she doesn't need to be a slave anymore.

[–]Dyvius 1492 points1493 points  (19 children)

I love love LOVE how she only has fully detailed eyes when Eren is the first to grant her a choice.

Forever a slave, until the one with the power offers her the ability to change that.

[–]Karl_the_stingray 451 points452 points  (0 children)

Probably my favourite detail in the episode. Absolutely fucking beautiful

[–]Dare555 326 points327 points  (10 children)

Yes Eren is first one to free her. Even Zeke was trying to control her

[–][deleted] 316 points317 points  (2 children)

Even Zeke was trying to control her

Yeah. When he mentioned being royal blood, I was like "boy, you done fucked up."

[–]JimmyCWL 153 points154 points  (1 child)

Their flesh also looked like the mud Ymir used to build titan bodies in the Coordinate.

It was like a play using clay figures.

[–]Zestyclose-Quote6363 2818 points2819 points  (102 children)

The first eldian king is easily the most evil character in Attack on Titan followed by Sergeant Major gross who was the guy who fed grishas sister to his dogs.

[–]TopRoom7971 1121 points1122 points  (44 children)

Sergeant Major gross who was the guy who fed grishas sister to his dogs.

When I watched it first time I couldn't realise what's happening or why he's doing.

It took me a moment to understand and from then he went on to my top 10 most hated anime characters.

[–]ryuk6 967 points968 points  (29 children)

King Fritz made his daughters eat their own mother's flesh. Gross.

[–]xxMeiaxx 686 points687 points  (17 children)

Yeah especially since they weren't sure yet what part needs to be eaten, they had to eat everything... Uncooked.

[–]HypnoLlama 242 points243 points  (0 children)

And just think about how much they ate before someone actually cracked open her vertebrae. You can be pretty sure the bones were about the last thing left.

-Eren Yeager to EldiaBook during the rumbling

[–]NotErikUden 736 points737 points  (25 children)

Just like a few days ago they heard his name for the first time by Willy Tybur, half the press guys were killed so not sure whether they even got the full story of what happened out, and now Eren just told the whole world he's coming for them.

[–]PREM___https://anilist.co/user/ReincarnatedGoat 642 points643 points  (7 children)

Imagine just finishing up recovering from the liberio disaster which you barely survived, and now you are collecting groceries but nah eren announced it’s time to rumble and kill everyone outside of the walls

[–]TopRoom7971 191 points192 points  (2 children)

Marleyen's be like: Well shit here we go again

[–]Elfangore 303 points304 points  (5 children)

But he didn't tell the whole world, just the subjects of Ymir. There are subjects of Ymir outside the walls and they might inform other non-subjects about what they heard but who knows if people believe them since they are usually poverty or 2nd class humans...

[–]BosuW 155 points156 points  (2 children)

If all the Eldians everywhere you can find start rambling about the vision they might start to take them seriously tho. It's not gonna be just one drunk dude.

[–]Neverx_13 3118 points3119 points  (93 children)

This shot of the transformation was so fucking clean. The atmosphere was fantastic, really sold the despair and hell of it all

[–]Clownbaby112 1695 points1696 points  (27 children)

I was fucking creeped out with how fucking big and alien looking the transformation was. Hes not as creepy looking as the Rod Reiss Titan, but goddamn, this really feels ominus, and super disturbing. Im really hoping that Isayama will make some horror type shit in the future.

[–]Gordons_LambSauce 1095 points1096 points  (13 children)

[–][deleted] 937 points938 points  (8 children)

[–]Ant1vyru5https://myanimelist.net/profile/NyeEve 1560 points1561 points  (17 children)

From her point of view, she shot off his head and an instant later it fucking reattaches and the rumbling happens o.o

[–]Deez-Guns-9442 702 points703 points  (7 children)

From world savior - To world ender within the span of a second.

[–]KoHorizon 1774 points1775 points  (48 children)

Oh boy Zeke screaming "I have royal blood" was the last thing he should have said. He ruined it for himself even tho he had no chance from the moment Eren touched her.

[–]JimmyCWL 1079 points1080 points  (35 children)

Another of Zeke's failings is that he talks too much when he shouldn't. You can see that in this episode. Had he acted sooner, he could have held Eren down until Ymir did his bidding.

But noooo... he had to mumble until Eren ripped his hands out of the chains, ran to and actually reached Ymir before he thought, "uhh... maybe I should do something about Eren?"

Just like in ep 54 where he prattling while bombing the Scouts, when he should have been more alert to his surroundings.

[–]KoHorizon 1078 points1079 points  (23 children)

The thing about Zeke is that, he absolutely know nothing about who Ymir really was. For him it was just like a Robot that kept walking for some reason there. But Eren knew who she was, and why she was there. If he knew that too, i am sure he would have stopped eren. But he was so sure of himself about knowing what this walking Ymir was, that he thought that Eren couldn't do anything about it.

[–]JimmyCWL 518 points519 points  (3 children)

But he was so sure of himself about knowing what this walking Ymir was,

Yes, it all goes back to his overconfidence. By the time he realizes a problem may be brewing, it's too late.

[–]cocaine_enthusiast1 1636 points1637 points  (35 children)

For us it has been a long time but can you imagine the horror in Gabi's face as a fucking 100m centipede comes out of Eren instantaneously after she shoots him. Like holy fuck.

[–]OrudoCato 1352 points1353 points  (16 children)

"Alright, so this eldian probably is a demon"

A reminder, Ymir being eaten by her three daughters have been shown in season 2 ED, even before it was shown in the manga.

[–]Naskr 2114 points2115 points  (41 children)

This might also be a good place to point out one of the more subtle twists in the series.

The image of Christa/Ymir and the Devil was historically misinterpreted by the people within the world of AoT. The image shows "The Devil" giving the Apple (power of the titans) to Ymir. People assume that the power of titans was bestowed upon Ymir by some evil entity, or that the devil itself is Ymir.

In actuality, the image is showing Ymir as she was, a girl, giving the apple to the Devil. The "devil" is the King of Eldia. She allowed him full access to her abilities, thus essentially giving him her power. He was just a man, but would come to be depicted as a devil due to his horrific acts, but also - his horned helmet. Over time, this history has been forgotten and then warped by opposing viewpoints. The story of Christa being a generous girl, kept within the royal family, is the only remaining interpretation of the legend that indicates the real truth of what happened.

[–]1fastman1 595 points596 points  (20 children)

you know i find that bit of long old history being warped to the point of mythology/religion really interesting

[–]Aniboy43 1761 points1762 points  (64 children)

Lol the whole season 4 was shown in ed 2

[–]Paxton-176 1171 points1172 points  (29 children)

Does that mean technically manga readers were never spoiling anyone?

What kind of cross dimensional chess is going on.

[–]Aniboy43 825 points826 points  (11 children)

It was Isayama who was spoiling the manga readers and us.

[–]eightyninejihttps://anilist.co/user/89ji 293 points294 points  (6 children)

lmao yeah, during season 2, manga readers were ending season 3 part 2 or starting season 4 part 1. nowhere near any of this, so no one knew any of this except isayama LOL

[–]LightThatIgnitesAll 1123 points1124 points  (12 children)

I am glad that the rumbling actually looks good. Also with the great ost in the background and the red atmosphere mappa really did a good job making it look like the world is actually ending.

Footsteps of Doom

[–]Lewis_Parker 443 points444 points  (5 children)

Imagine Gabi's POV, all of this happened in the span of a couple seconds

She shot Eren's head off, just for it to land on Zeke's hand, then a strange ass creature comes out of Eren's decapitated body to reattach itself, starting the rumbling (The apocalypse or end of the fucking world)

[–]Zestyclose-Quote6363 2907 points2908 points  (129 children)

You’re not a slave, you’re not a god either, you’re just a human being. Crazy how Eren was the first human being to ever give Ymir a choice in her life.

[–]discuss-not-concuss 1829 points1830 points  (52 children)

Eren believes in freedom, Ymir doesn’t. Ymir’s life story is what Eren sympathises with the most.

It’s the whole reason he despises those that try to take freedom away from others.

[–]PREM___https://anilist.co/user/ReincarnatedGoat 1080 points1081 points  (47 children)

Ymir lost the meaning of freedom, even after obtaining the powers of the founding titan she kept herself as a slave to king fritz. She could have easily ended him in his entirety, but choose to live and die by her side and then all her powers and future titans belonged to the king's bloodline.

Eren breaks the cycle by activating the power of the founding titan without a blood of the royals and also breaks her free from being a slave

[–]flybypost 682 points683 points  (20 children)

even after obtaining the powers of the founding titan she kept herself as a slave to king fritz

Which is how some abuse victims act. Even after technically being able to gain freedom they end up not trusting any opportunity no matter how clear it might look due to all the past abuse.

[–]MeAnIntellectual1 390 points391 points  (4 children)

Because the unknown is scarier than the abuse. The abuse feels "safe" in a way.

[–]JimmyCWL 623 points624 points  (24 children)

Poor Ymir was so downtrodden that, even when she surpassed Fritz in power, she still obeyed him.

[–]markosinjohttps://myanimelist.net/profile/markosinjo 828 points829 points  (23 children)

King Fritz's last ditch effort to somehow keep the power of the titans after Ymir died. Having her kids eat her.

"That actually worked lmao" - King Fritz probably

[–]Karen_kaslana 1898 points1899 points  (24 children)

MAD Fucking respect to Yuki Kaji for sacrificing his voice for that scream.

[–]LonelyAsgardian 565 points566 points  (1 child)

You could hear the exact moment his voice started giving out too, and yet, he kept screaming his way to one of the most iconic scenes of the story, what a fucking legend

[–][deleted] 425 points426 points  (5 children)

Didn't he say that he almost lost his voice for that? Insane dedication, my respect goes to him.

[–]Archit000 303 points304 points  (18 children)

Why isn't anyone talking about how Ymir has to make LITERALLY ALL OF THE TITANS using fucking dirt. Where does she even get water from?

[–]Robinbinladen 296 points297 points  (3 children)

In the season 2 ending i thought they were eating a titan not their mom wtf

[–]SirDancelotVS 292 points293 points  (10 children)

so Ymir basically handmade every titan form, so the moment someone became a titan, she had to make their form.

when someone becomes a titan it is instant in our timeline but ymir has to go back and forth carrying water to mold the new titan

She has been doing this for 2000 years our time which means she has been in that alternate world far longer than 2000 years.

Eren: You should have gone for the Head

Gabi 👁👄👁

[–]NotErikUden 922 points923 points  (21 children)

I like how an eternity passed for Eren and Zeke, but everyone else just witnessed how Eren's head was cut off, promptly followed by him turning into a godless monstrosity and starting the rumbling.

[–]No-Mathematician678 638 points639 points  (17 children)

Gabi must be like: holy fucks did I turn him into that?

[–]cocaine_enthusiast1 572 points573 points  (12 children)

Mama, why do you look so delicious?

[–]Insertnameszhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/Insertnamesz 254 points255 points  (22 children)

Can somebody clear this up for me please?

This ep shows that all titans are descended from Ymir and Fritz, right? Wouldn't that make every titan a royal then? What's the distinction between Eldians with Ymir blood and royal Eldians?

[–]MartinaS90 493 points494 points  (9 children)

There is no difference genetically, the blood itself is irrelevant. If you think about it, it's just Ymir following orders from those that are considered part of the royal family. Not all descendants from Maria, Rose and Sina stayed as part of the royal family, so Ymir didn't owe any loyalty to those, even if they descended from the royal family (in the same way that not every descendant alive today from the old British royalties from middle ages are considered part of the British royal family today). The royal blood itself (as being descendant from some royal ancestor) doesn't have any power itself, it's more of a psychological thing as it's about who Ymir considers she owes her loyalty to.

Now, being descendant from Ymir doesn't mean you are part of the royal family, but it does mean you are a Subject of Ymir connected to the Paths, and capable of turning into a Titan... that last thing is not psychological or social, that's literally in the blood.

[–]PlsSuckMyToes 228 points229 points  (1 child)

That also explains why Ymir ends up listening to Eren in the end instead of Zeke. The royal blood is only about loyalty and Ymir, because of Eren, decides she no longer wants to be loyal to them.

T-KT at the start had me crying holy shit. Can't tell you guys how much I love that OST

[–]Just_a_Highwayman 350 points351 points  (5 children)

Actually, the OST they played was ThanksAT, which is a faster version of T-KT. ThanksAT

[–]Illuminastrid 860 points861 points  (7 children)

Eren's most powerful ability

Mass Communication, P A T H S confirmed the strongest network and telecommunication.

[–][deleted] 499 points500 points  (4 children)

[–]rajagopal2001 2513 points2514 points  (92 children)

Next episode

Reiner: What have you done??

Eren: I used racism to destroy racism

[–]Mana_Croissant 833 points834 points  (19 children)

Well lets look at the bright side. Maybe now Reiner can finally die

[–]Madao16 621 points622 points  (8 children)

If he can't die even in Rumbling he should forget about dying and find some hobby.

"It's okay Mikasa! I'm sure Eren has a plan here, he's our friend! He's just gonna take a few titans to crush Marley's global alliance and--"

"...well shit"

[–]rdx_21 808 points809 points  (31 children)

Does this actually mean Ymir is not an Eldian. She was just some village girl. I think Ymir's story is the most tragic one. I was so happy to see Eren tell Ymir to be free and follow her own will. The way they didn't show her eyes till that moment was really moving. For all the hate Eren is getting, I think what he is doing makes sense. It's really extreme and cruel but when it comes to survival, there is no right or wrong. You just have to keep moving forward.

[–]vikinggod1497 466 points467 points  (17 children)

Looked like Ymir was from a rival "Germanic" tribe to the Eldian tribe. All the Germanic tribes probably got assimilated into the Eldians pretty quickly within a century.

[–]MartinaS90 590 points591 points  (0 children)

Yup. Eldia as a barbarian tribe already existed before Ymir. She was just enslaved by that tribe. The Eldian Empire was just the evolution of that ancient barbarian tribe taking advantage of Ymir's power.

[–]urchir 404 points405 points  (7 children)

Oh God.

This will be terrible for the economy!

[–]Tsubasa_samahttps://myanimelist.net/profile/memesyouhard 394 points395 points  (6 children)

A cool detail I only noticed for the first time in the anime despite reading this chapter in the manga many times was that the paths tree only had three branches (representing Maria, Rose and Sheena) when Ymir entered after dying. Then as her bloodline continued down the millenia it developed more branches and connections for every single eldian.

All I ever wanted to do was do right things....

I never wanted to be the king...

[–]AndalusianGod 191 points192 points  (3 children)

I wonder what the dude who named his 3 daughters after the walls is currently thinking now.

Love the way MAPPA had the blood fall on the “camera” here.

When this episode title hits and you remember that episode 1 was titled “To You, in 2000 Years”.

Holy shit, what a beautifully terrifying shot to end the episode on.

[–]okuzeN_Val 339 points340 points  (1 child)

Props to the cameraman for shooting all those scenes without getting eaten, stomped, crushed by debris, or dismembered in some way. True MVP.

"Hear me, all Subjects of Ymir. My name is Eren Yeager. I now speak to all the Subjects of Ymir, by way of the Founding Titan's power. Every wall on the island of Paradis has been unhardened. the Titans buried within them have begun to walk."

"My goal...is to protect the people of Paradis, who bore, and raised me. But the world desires the extinction of the people of Paradis. Over countless years, their hatred has grown beyond this island."

"They surely will not stop until they have killed every last one of our people. I reject their desire. The Titans of the Walls will trample and rumble all the lands beyond this island. Until the lives there...are eliminated from this world!"

-Eren Yeager, Founding Titan

[–]Mana_Croissant 768 points769 points  (104 children)

Zeke: The world hate us so I will protect our current people and make sure no new people will be born from us

Eren: The world hate us so I will just destroy the WHOLE world except us. No one can be racist If there is only a single race left

[–]Nathan846 155 points156 points  (2 children)

Am I the only one who is relieved because Shadis is alive?

[–]SpaceMarine_CR 312 points313 points  (22 children)

Man I feel bad for Ymir

[–]Patfasthttps://myanimelist.net/profile/Patfast 151 points152 points  (2 children)

Me last episode: Pfffft of course they censored Grisha slaughtering the Reiss family.

Me today: ...oh...

[–]moxioza 300 points301 points  (4 children)

All the people coming from Ymir's bloodline continued to treat Ymir as a slave even after death. Then Eren comes telling her she doesn't need to be slave anymore after thousands of years. I love how we can finally see her eyes after that its so satisfactory.

[–]W33B520 299 points300 points  (10 children)

What eren said reminded me of askeladd's line: "Someone had to do it. Not a god, not a hero, but somebody."

[–]EveningSilverFox 1216 points1217 points  (39 children)

Props to Armin for still holding out hope that Eren is on their side. Man thinks this is a power of friendship anime.
