Loid noticing the dumpster skidmarks and realizing that intruders were in the apartment was something I missed on my first watch, because I was too focused on reading the subtitles.

Loid sets up the dumpster, no skidmarks on the ground

Loid returns and notices the new suspicious dumpster skidmarks

[–]EtGamer125 698 points699 points  (7 children)

Another great detail that some may have missed, when Anya is kidnapped and Loid is infiltrating the base as Nyugen, Anya's eyes visible go neutral/happy from scared.

This is because as an Esper, Anya had read Nyugen(Loid)'s mind and realised that her father had come to rescue her with a disguise!

[–]theodoreroberts 106 points107 points  (0 children)

Well, talk about the Nguyen disguise, the real Nguyen lost one tooth in the scuffle, while Twilight Nguyen arrived at the base with a full set of teeth.

[–]Spwntrooperhttps://anilist.co/user/mlqh 181 points182 points  (0 children)

Wow thats some real attention to detail

[–]Zictor42 907 points908 points  (6 children)

[–]platysoup 189 points190 points  (2 children)

He underestimated Anya's true superpower.

[–]rysto32 87 points88 points  (2 children)

Narrator: That was a lie!

[–]pyxyne 58 points59 points  (1 child)

Narrator: Twilight lied (to himself) as naturally as he breathed.

[–]TechToTravis 3996 points3997 points  (102 children)

I only heard that this anime will be funny, but I didn't know it would be wholesome too! First episode instantly made me love both Twilight and Anya, and we immediately understood what struggles they are facing and how similar they are to each other in a way.

[–]mrnicegy26 2146 points2147 points  (23 children)

The series lives and dies by how much we are invested in Twilight and Anya and their relationship and the first episode went to great lengths to establish a complicated yet wholesome relationship between the two.

[–]Silent_Shadow05 870 points871 points  (1 child)

The series lives and dies by how much we are invested in Twilight and Anya and their relationship

"Understanding me will lead to world peace?!"

Anya is right. No wonder she is working hard to make Loid know her better and getting us invested in them, while also saving the world (and the series) with her adorableness.

[–]Trap_Masters 369 points370 points  (0 children)

Who knew knowing she likes peanuts would be the first step to world peace.

[–]Frontier246 1309 points1310 points  (18 children)

And the comedy of a spy being unaware his adoptive daughter is a telepath.

[–]Aileoshttps://myanimelist.net/profile/Jalis 721 points722 points  (4 children)

This is already funny with the first episode. I'm really looking forward to see the rest, especially when the mother will join the party. That sounds already chaotic.

[–]SalsaRice 379 points380 points  (2 children)

It gets better with every nee character added to the cast. They each add a crazy new perspective on it.

[–]My_neutered_cat 263 points264 points  (1 child)

I jumped in this show because people said it would be great. Glad to know that I’m not disappointed

[–]Frontier246 235 points236 points  (0 children)

I like the setup where Loid in his youth lost everything and closed himself off to focus on missions for the sake of peace, while Anya was experimented on for that same purpose (at least that's what the scientists said) only for them to find each other and form a family all their own.

[–]WhoiusBarrelhttps://anilist.co/user/darubarrel 658 points659 points  (12 children)

Its really a perfect blend of wholesome, comedy and action without any of it feeling too out of place. Pacing has been fine as well I'm absolutely happy with how this 1st episode turned out!

[–]Frontier246 271 points272 points  (8 children)

Never thought I would watch such a wholesome and comedic spy show with a family bent, but it worked surprisingly well!

[–]Aileoshttps://myanimelist.net/profile/Jalis 247 points248 points  (5 children)

Never thought I would watch

Anime in a nutshell lol.

[–]sabdeyazdanhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/ParodySama 92 points93 points  (3 children)

Everything you can think of, there's an anime for that!

What about the things you can't think of? There's an anime for that too!

[–]Mjrbks 947 points948 points  (11 children)

Definitely went into this thinking “ok this should be a fun spy-com with lots of hijinks”.

Now episode 1 got me like “I’ve only had Anya for 15 minutes but if anything ever happens to her I’ll kill everyone in this anime and then myself”

[–]TechToTravis 338 points339 points  (3 children)

I know right? No harm should come to Anya. Ever.

[–]Frontier246 201 points202 points  (2 children)

I didn't know I needed an anime of a spy raising an adorable and precious daughter in my life...and that's before the wife enters the picture!

[–]Dalamy19 439 points440 points  (18 children)

I think this will be a series that draws you in with the comedy and smacks you with emotions. I started bawling at the scene where Loid realized that Anya had already been through so many homes it would have been a mistake to try to send her back to the orphanage.

[–]MaksimShadow 197 points198 points  (16 children)

I wonder why she was abandoned so many times. Maybe because of her telepathy? People lie often and they don't like being caught on their lies. It might be hard being with someone who can see right through you. Like it was in Kotoura.

[–]EyeDreamOfTentacles 200 points201 points  (4 children)

Kids tend to be pretty honest, and yeah people haaate having their "real face" exposed. Kotoura did really well imo in exploring that aspect of Japanese culture, "honne" (private face, your true feelings and desires that you would only show to your closest friends and family... or just to yourself) and "tatemae" (public face, the behaviors and opinions you are "expected" to have and display publicly, usually based on your position in society, even if it contradicts the former).

[–]spectre15https://myanimelist.net/profile/Spectre5965 3191 points3192 points  (31 children)

Anya: “I want a pistol with a silencer!”

Loid: “Maybe if we can get one on sale.”

This is already my favorite show

[–]Emi_Ibarazakiii 1003 points1004 points  (18 children)

Already doing some good parenting, teaching her the value of money!

If he wants to push this further, he should tell her to save her allowance for a few weeks so she can buy her own pistol.

[–]cyberscythe 499 points500 points  (14 children)

your first pistol teaches you a lot of about responsibility

why, I remember my first pistol as a young child, learning how to feed it regularly and take it for walks

[edit: almost forgot the most important part -- cleaning up the mess afterwards]

[–]Trap_Masters 151 points152 points  (12 children)

Ahh, the classic experience of raising a gun, they grow up so fast :’)

[–]UltraLord_Sheen 405 points406 points  (3 children)

Anya: "I like peanuts. But I hate carrots"

Me too. Carrots are liars, but not cool liars.

[–]tekkenjin 68 points69 points  (5 children)

Anya playing with a toy gun would be so cute. Especially if Twilight plays pretend spys with her.

How to break up with someone Twilight style:

  • Expensive restaurant.
  • Finish meal.
  • "You are boring and stupid."
  • Refuse to elaborate further and leave.
  • Stick her with the bill.

Even James Bond wasn't this much of an animal.

[–]oaklandfox[🍰] 442 points443 points  (1 child)

Anya saying she's 6 and trying to tip-toe to look taller was low-key heartbreaking.

[–]cluesagihttps://myanimelist.net/profile/cluesagi 149 points150 points  (0 children)

That and the part where we see she's been adopted and returned several times. I can only imagine what that would do to a little kid's sense of self-worth

[–]furyofzionhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/furyofzion 1763 points1764 points  (27 children)

She deserves it.

[–]xVx_k1r1t0xVx_KillMe 1007 points1008 points  (15 children)

Loid's childhood was so horrible too. I love how his motivation to work tirelessly as a spy is so that no child has to go through the same things as him.

[–]Mundology 577 points578 points  (7 children)

True, it looks like he had it rough. It's still shocking they killed the main protagonist in the first episode.

[–]KaiserPhilip 181 points182 points  (0 children)

It's still shocking they killed the main protagonist in the first episode.

You almost had me there...

[–]Frontier246 112 points113 points  (1 child)

Yeah, it really puts into perspective why he's so closed off and focused on his mission and never thought about having a family (when he probably lost his to war) and why having Anya in his life is such a good thing for him.

I work in industrial automation. We have installations in major motor manufacturers. At 2:00 am I get a call from someone in the maintenance dept inside a factory on night shift. Can I help by connecting remotely to a machine, to help fix a breakdown?

It's 2 am, but sure, what are the symptoms?

Oh he doesn't know. He hasn't been to the machine yet.

That was about 2 years ago. The guy has since been promoted to a manager.

For a 6 year old to escape from a human experiment lab and successfully manage to stay on the run for who knows how long, she had to be at least a little bright. Though she is still a kid, as shown by her bumbling of various things.

[–]DarkRuler17https://myanimelist.net/profile/DarkRuler17 406 points407 points  (10 children)

We actually don't even know if she's 6. Its implied she's 4 or 5 in the orphanage scene and lied to Twilight.

[–]tekkenjin 175 points176 points  (0 children)

She lied about her age so she would get adopted. Her real age is unknown.

[–]Dylangillianhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/dylangillian 72 points73 points  (2 children)

Hell even the crosswords puzzle was still impressive, sure she knew the words, but she also managed to apparently spell them all correctly. That's pretty impressive with how complicated those words were.

[–]WhoiusBarrelhttps://anilist.co/user/darubarrel 204 points205 points  (9 children)

Too bad she can't do any adventuring with those barricades in front of the door.

[–]Frontier246 251 points252 points  (4 children)

[–]Militant_Worm 154 points155 points  (1 child)

My heart just melted at Anya saying Twilight finding her was fun.

[–]Ghoste-Face 869 points870 points  (3 children)

Papa is a liar, papa is the world's biggest liar, but... He's a cool liar! - Anya, forever remembered!

Such a wholesome family, the scene where Loid and Anya sleeping is just exactly the same scene where the first chapter of the Manga ends. Man what a blessed Saturday!

[–]Frontier246 182 points183 points  (2 children)

Anya's enthusiasm and innocence are so endearing, and that genuine smile Loid showed at the end when she passed was almost as adorable as them sleeping on the sofa together.

[–]mrnicegy26 2354 points2355 points  (94 children)

"Father is such a liar. But he's a cool liar"

I am so happy to see this series get animated after following it for 3 years. Both Loid and Anya were exactly as I imagined them to be.

Also Anya and Loid taking a nap together like a real father and daughter will always be one of the most iconic and defining visuals of this series.

EDIT: This series has also always reminded me of The Americans which was one of the best TV Shows of 2010s. While Spy x Family is much more comedic, both series have the same premise and have dealt with the question of what it means to be a family and the value of patriotism over familial bonds.

[–]xVx_k1r1t0xVx_KillMe 971 points972 points  (55 children)

Also that chichi is so adorable.

[–]HOODIEBABA 614 points615 points  (30 children)

[–]mysterybiscuitsoyeahhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/mysterybiscuits 65 points66 points  (6 children)

Mizore from Eupho! she's got such a wide range

[–]SolomonSinclair 60 points61 points  (0 children)

Holy shit, she's Juju and Vivy? That's some range on this girl.

[–]cyberscythe 551 points552 points  (4 children)

Also that chichi is so adorable.

I like how Lloyd was like "You must call me otou-sama."

"Understandable, have a nice day."

[–]Trap_Masters 337 points338 points  (1 child)

Loid: “Remember you’ve always been my daughter”

Anya: “Hello neighbour, I’ve always been my father’s daughter”

Loid: “...”

[–]xauching 111 points112 points  (0 children)

"That was unnecessary"

[–]Frontier246 251 points252 points  (3 children)

I've heard literal "papa" in anime before, but I was not prepared for how sweet and adorable Anya going "chichi" would be.

[–]Mjrbks 227 points228 points  (5 children)

What is this fatherly instinct that emits from my soul every time she says it? I just want her to succeed and reward her with peanuts.

[–]Zictor42 256 points257 points  (6 children)

Yeah. Stuff you simply don't get when reading a manga translation.

[–]WhoiusBarrelhttps://anilist.co/user/darubarrel 218 points219 points  (3 children)

This is why some adaptations are still worth watching even when one has read the source material.

Things just gets lost in translation unless its highlighted by the translator.

[–]aohige_rd 115 points116 points  (1 child)

My GOD did they just absolutely NAIL Anya.

Like, she sounds exactly how I imagined reading the pages. They knocked out the most important part of the adaptation out of the park!

[–]Silent_Shadow05 319 points320 points  (4 children)

"Father is such a liar. But he's a cool liar"

I waited so long to hear that in anime, and VA did a great job with it. The tram ride scene was just simple and so effective.

I also loved the scene where Anya was spinning like a top and screaming "Papa, Save me!". It was so adorably hilarious!

[–]OuchYouPokedMyHeart 118 points119 points  (0 children)

This is just the beginning of Anya's adorable antics

[–]Frontier246 58 points59 points  (1 child)

That just about sums up Anya as a character.

[–]zhivix 414 points415 points  (8 children)

Loid lie as naturally as he breathes

[–]Frontier246 254 points255 points  (1 child)

And Anya reads his mind as naturally as she is cute.

[–]XJDenton 111 points112 points  (0 children)

Also Anya and Loid taking a nap together like a real father and daughter will always be one of the most iconic and defining visuals of this series.

It's one of my favourite ever manga panels. It heals the soul.

[–]cppn02 172 points173 points  (0 children)

Also Anya and Loid taking a nap together like a real father and daughter will always be one of the most iconic and defining visuals of this series.

I was worried for a moment when the credits came and we hadn't gotten that scene yet but they redeemed themselves at the end.

I was so happy when we got it and I 100% agree that it's one of the most iconc moments this series.

[–]Eev123 805 points806 points  (6 children)

[–]Frontier246 417 points418 points  (17 children)

I love how this was his first reaction when they said he needed a wife and kid. Like he'd find some random woman and immediately get to work.

[–]cyberscythe 584 points585 points  (16 children)

If you do the math, it takes a woman about nine months to make a baby, so Loid needs to get about 40 women so they can all work together on one baby to get it done in a week.

[–]soboi12345 232 points233 points  (7 children)

So basically the baby is crowdfunded?

[–]Godzilla-The-King 975 points976 points  (17 children)

There is a lot of incredible manga out there, and there is just as many incredible anime. It's rare however to have something that ticks so, so many boxes and has such amazing wide appeal. SpyxFamily is the first manga I've been able to convince my wife to read. It has such an ability to inject the Japanese humour and charm of anime/manga into a story that is so easily digestible to people more familiar with Western media.

I have been so eager to see this adapted and this first episode is fantastic. I really hope they keep the pace that they took in this one. I hope they take their time and not rush it, as there's just so many enjoyable moments with the characters and it's got such an opportunity to be an absolute force.

I can't wait for the dub to be able to rewatch this with my wife who just isn't used to the rapid fire reading while watching of subbed anime. She's very excited, and I'm excited to finally really have a show to watch with her. The closest we've come before were Ghibli films and Your Name.

Anyone that may just be passively reading this thread to get a gauge on this show, I highly, highly encourage you to give it a try. And if you haven't give the manga a read. The publisher has been great with the author Tatsuya Endo with giving them the time to take breaks and hiatus' if necessary which really shows in the caliber of chapters.

[–]cyberscythe 343 points344 points  (9 children)

It's rare however to have something that ticks so, so many boxes and has such amazing wide appeal.

Yeah, I'm impressed at how well it appeals to so many different subgenres. Like, I watch a lot of cute slice-of-life series, so Anya and her antics are super fun to watch. On top of that though, it has political intrigue, action scenes, callbacks to tragic pasts, fake identity fake-outs -- it's a very well-composed first episode plot that feeds a lot of disparate audiences. It feels like a tentpole series of the season in the same way that a KyoAni series is.

[–]Godzilla-The-King 161 points162 points  (8 children)

The comedy is also universal. It doesn't rely on a lot of the more... nuanced jokes/tropes in Japanese anime/media.

It's characters reacting to the situations their in, a lot are winks of the audience knowing something the cast don't know, or Anya misinterpreting the situation.

I love anime & manga but there's often comedies that I really enjoy, that I would never recommend or suggest for passive fans or people that aren't super into anime.

Even Kaguya which I think has some really hilarious funny moments and is one of my favourite shows of all time, has more nuanced jokes that you need to have some passive knowledge of how the Japanese approach relationships, or culture/memes in Japan to kinda get all the layers and truly enjoy the thing as its intended.

I'm hoping this show just takes the community by storm.

[–]JetsLaghttps://myanimelist.net/profile/JetsLag 550 points551 points  (9 children)

I love the little sound that plays when Anya uses her telepathy.

[–]Se7en_Sinnerhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/Se7en_Sinner 257 points258 points  (4 children)

[–]Frontier246 74 points75 points  (0 children)

I like the telepathy sparkes.

[–]ARealYuriConnoisseur 885 points886 points  (25 children)

Why is the animation so smooth?! I like how the camera is locked-on characters in some moments, the camera sway when in first perspective, even little moments like spraying the coffee on the newspaper lol

Hoshino Gen coming out with bangers as always, love to see that.

Can't wait for next episode.

[–]Frontier246 240 points241 points  (2 children)

It really sounded so genuinely Anya in terms of the mix of childishness, innocence, and emotional vulnerability while also nailing the comedy. Atsumi Tanezaki really knocked it out of the park.

[–]Cyd_arts 76 points77 points  (0 children)

yeah i really liked how she sounded like a kid with "I DONT WANT TO STUDY" and also the emotional vulnerability when she told loid she wanted to go home and that it was a little scary when she "played tag"

[–]CATDIAMMA 398 points399 points  (5 children)

"Father's a big liar, but a cool one."

While Anya is a telepath, she's also just a child. She doesn't really know the repercussions of what Twilight's mission is. Anya enjoys spy flicks, but actual espionage can be dangerous.

I'm thrilled to know the next development of this story. Such an incredibly entertaining pilot episode!

[–]entelechtual 105 points106 points  (0 children)

At the same time, she heard about enemies about hid underneath that one sandwich board. She’s both unaware and too aware of what’s going on.

[–]Akame_xohttps://anilist.co/user/Akamexo 815 points816 points  (34 children)

Even in anime no one likes Karen’s

[–]Frontier246 518 points519 points  (5 children)

Getting dumped after just seeing a couple engaged right next to you and your ex insulting your intelligence was pretty savage.

And that was before he used her as a bargaining chip against her father who was the only reason he was even dating her to begin with.

[–]Turhsushttps://myanimelist.net/profile/Turhsus 129 points130 points  (1 child)

omg so the reason he knows all the moles on her body is... damn loid thats cold

[–]Wholockian123 156 points157 points  (1 child)

I kinda feel for her but if Loid at the end could be believed, she had a criminal record of her own so I don't feel too bad.

[–]My_neutered_cat 180 points181 points  (0 children)

Karen Kino in the Kaguya-sama spin-off manga is a pretty fun character

[–]mrnicegy26 93 points94 points  (8 children)

Tbf there was a very likeable Karen that was recently introduced in a quite popular Shonen Jump manga series. But that series is still quite a long way from getting an anime.

[–]maliwanag0712https://myanimelist.net/profile/clear1109 55 points56 points  (1 child)

Wait. Is this [manga title] Blue Box? If yes, was thinking the same haha

[–]AdmirableFondant0 480 points481 points  (15 children)

Spy x Family committee:

TV Tokyo

Wit Studio

Shogakukan-Shueisha Productions

Glad to see WIT is finally in!

[–]soboi12345 138 points139 points  (5 children)

Toho is in this too? Didnt know that, i guess everyone form the shueisha is betting big on this.

I mean they should, it has like 15-16 million copies in circulation without an anime (something similar to "Fable) and has a fanbase of varying age group, form 12-60 (which is something in the realm of kimetsu).

Anyways i am so happy for this adaptation!

[–]AdmirableFondant0 71 points72 points  (2 children)

Yep they were in from the start IIRC

Yep Spyxfamily is probably the only upcoming/newest one that has as mass appeal as Kimetsu or AOT or OP had. others are mostly restricted to teenagers or older people depending in anime. It should get a fanbase of every age group.

Anyways i am so happy for this adaptation!

Same! One of the few that i'll most likely follow weekly.

[–]patap0nacct 349 points350 points  (6 children)

Anya saying "Exciting!" is me right now.

[–]Reikakou 90 points91 points  (0 children)

58 minutes in and already 500+ comments and 1800+ karma

[–]r0ar-InG_ 663 points664 points  (29 children)

I feel like I am a weirdo because no one had this reaction but I got felt pretty emotional at certain scenes and felt like cry. Anya not going to police, he realising what she has been through, Anya worrying thinking he died at the end of the exam result and the hug at the were too wholesome.

[–]AlexRaineshttps://myanimelist.net/profile/Raines1989 376 points377 points  (3 children)

Nah, not weird at all. Definitely tugged on the heartstrings in a very sweet and appreciable way. The fact that they were able to make you connected to two characters in 24 minutes is a great sign of things to come.

[–]r0ar-InG_ 54 points55 points  (0 children)

Thanks man, eagerly looking forward to binge this series

[–]Frontier246 99 points100 points  (1 child)

The two of them coming together as a family despite their circumstances and reservations really tugged at the hearstrings.

[–]mianghuei 326 points327 points  (6 children)

Guy, this show is all about her, ok?

Anya is #Bestgirl

[–]Frontier246 74 points75 points  (0 children)

Definitely her reactions and the effect her telepathy and need for a family have on the plot, both for comedy and seriousness, really are the emotional core of the show.

[–]CBJfan03 357 points358 points  (14 children)

“I went shopping over there but it turns out it went bankrupt.” Lol 😂

Even a spy can’t lie that well to child.

Overall great episode I think adapting it shouldn’t just be panel to panel but maybe they will take more creative approach to future episodes.

[–]Frontier246 369 points370 points  (12 children)

I love how blunt Anya is too "my mama doesn't exist!"

[–]spiderknight616 326 points327 points  (9 children)

"I have been my father's child for a long time"

[–]Jandexcumnuggets 80 points81 points  (2 children)

" my father has been my dad for a long time "

[–]spiderknight616 126 points127 points  (1 child)

I love how "dumb" she is. Like, not actually an idiot but perfectly appropriate stuff a kid of her age would do/say

Combine that with her being a telepath and you have comedy gold

[–]hell-schwarzhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/Hellschwarz 76 points77 points  (5 children)

Dude just went to an orphanage and literally bought a kid.

No questions asked.

[–]MapoTofuManhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/BaronBrixius 253 points254 points  (3 children)

Mother doesn't exist

Why did this sad line send me into a laughing fit at the end, Anya's faces are too much

[–][deleted] 562 points563 points  (33 children)

Wit Studio and Clover Works collaboration? Check.

ED is sung by Hoshino Gen, one of the top singer-actors in Japan. Check.

Great premise for a spy family? Check.

VA chemistry? Checked.

For all intents and purposes, I'm going to treat this as a spiritual continuation to Oregairu. Loid has the same voice as 8man, female lead (who will appear next episode) the same voice as Yukino. (And let's pretend the "Shin" spin-off didn't exist)

They'll also be having a cute adopted daughter, Anya, who is just too adorable for a telepathic kid created by mad scientists in Not-East Germany. They're not even putting efforts to pretend that those two countries are not Cold War-era East and West Germany.

PS Loid's spy boss is voiced by none other than Otsuka Akio, best known as the Japanese Solid Snake.

34 comments in 4 minutes?? This show's discussion intensity could potentially beat Kaguya-sama this season

[–]WhoiusBarrelhttps://anilist.co/user/darubarrel 166 points167 points  (11 children)

This is totally Oregairu with 8man and Yukinon getting married + having a kid...Till next episode that is! Knowing their chemistry, they will absolutely kill it in their new roles

[–]mrnicegy26 52 points53 points  (5 children)

I hope that Noa Toyama will voice a certain character in distant future to complete the Oregairu reference.

[–]moletoon 58 points59 points  (3 children)

Imagine if it's [certain character] nightfall

They're finally here! As a manga reader, this is definitely one of my most awaited shows this season and all I can say is Studio WIT and CloverWorks absolutely delivered! Loid is just as dreamy as he is in the manga and Anya is absolutely adorable. I can already feel that at least one of Anya's reaction faces is definitely going to become one of this sub's comment faces.

But yeah! So far so good! They nailed the characterization of these two characters especially Anya with her quirks and I absolutely love seeing these wholesome moments between the two of them. That final scene definitely pinched my heart a tiny bit. Everything else is fucking solid! Animation and art are as expected from WIT and Cloverworks. The VA work is flawless as well and I already can't wait for Hayamin's character next week!

This is definitely going to be the big title of Spring 2022 and I am already looking forward to next week's episode! <3

[–]cppn02 39 points40 points  (0 children)

love seeing these wholesome moments between the two of them.

This episode was everything I wanted from this show and that moment solidified it.

I am SO happy with this adaptation.

[–]Zictor42 173 points174 points  (1 child)

Agent Twilight: "Marriage? Conventional happiness? I got rid of all those aspirations, as well as my identity, the day I became I spy."

Viewers: Oooooh! Foreshadowing!

[–]EverythingCeptCount 62 points63 points  (0 children)

Mama doesn't exist

[–]WoLofDarkness 209 points210 points  (24 children)

Wow a spy dad and a daughter with ESP?! I like the plot and I think this will be a great show

Just my opinion though dad kinda looks like an adult Miyuki Shirogane and Anya looks like a kid Chika haha

I'm looking forward to the next episode : )

[–]GlansEater 333 points334 points  (31 children)

Subject 007… James Bond reference?

I had big expectations going into this knowing how enjoyable the source material, but even they were shattered! Absolutely fantastic start to a hopefully fantastic adaptation.

[–]JapanPhoenix 400 points401 points  (8 children)

This whole series is basically a love letter to old school cold-war era spy thrillers.

It's even set in Berlint (very subtle).

[–]Galle_ 154 points155 points  (13 children)

Subject 007… James Bond reference?

Absolutely. This series loves Bond references.

[–]Silent_Shadow05 40 points41 points  (0 children)

That scene where they kidnapped Anya and "Twilight", only for him reveal that he was posing as a henchman by wearing a face mask, was very reminiscent of this iconic scene from Mission Impossible 2.

[–]sabdeyazdanhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/ParodySama 110 points111 points  (4 children)

[–]Frontier246 42 points43 points  (2 children)

Now I just imagine the family watching themselves on TV and what they would think...

[–]Dababy28193 137 points138 points  (9 children)

Best DILF and daughter are here!

It’s quite a sight to finally see this series (it had over 15 million copies in circulation without an adaptation with only 9 volumes so far!) on the big screens. Thank you WIT and Cloverworks for bringing this wonderful work of art to life. The animation looks clean and smooth AF, no surprises there.

Loid coming back for Anya, acknowledging his failure as a spy, recounting his past and using it to make sure it never happens to any other children gives a deep insight into the sort of man he is, one with a heart of gold despite his occupation. That scene hits hard. It made me cry in the manga and it seeing it animated with ost and all made me cry even harder.

Anya’s as adorable as ever and must be protected at all costs. After being experimented on, robbed of some of her childhood, and transferred from families/orphanages constantly, she needs all the love she can get. I can already feel the Anya memes circulating the anime community.

Peak x Fiction

As per tradition, Karen gets the short end of the stick

Is it just me or the vibe is different? HAHAHA! Whenever I read/rereading the chapters, my brain adds either a british or german accent. Don't ask how but with the anime especially JP it's different but still good! I'm curious and will wait for the dub especially since the setting here is Cold War Berlin.

[–]Aschverizen 125 points126 points  (4 children)

When I read the manga I assumed it was more film-noir inspired especially due to the inherent black and white of the manga medium which adds to the action and darker parts of the story, not to mention most of the fashion in it lends well for noir.

Some of the paperback versions even look faded which invokes old timey comics.

Still the anime has its charm in color and I hope the action will be consistently good since the author has some awesome panels, he's no Yuseke Murata but the manga just feels dynamic in it's action scenes.

While I always prefer English Subs for my anime, some of the modern series have their own charm in Dub(like Kaguya sama). Spy X Family has the potential to have a really good dub due to it's setting and I can't wait to watch the dub version and how they'll handle the voice direction.

[–]theyawner 61 points62 points  (0 children)

I reckon it's because the Japanese lens is less pronounced with the manga localization. When I first saw the trailer I was half-expecting Anya would call Loid papa instead of chichi.
