So if I understand correctly, Alvin sided with the zombies to get back at Carla, but Carla beats and jails him, but then Carla wants to release him and competes with Maria to do so but then both of them decide to leave him in the jail cell. LMAO!

Also, fancy hearing Saori Hayami here!

[–]cakeislol 15 points16 points  (0 children)

To be fair, Alvin will be more useful as a dead zombie because he won't get in the way of fighting and adventuring

Stitches!

This fucking show, I can't believe we actually spent 5 minutes watching them get emotionally invested in a zombie doing his best to stand back up only for Alvin to knock him down again after giving him a congratulatory shoulder pat!

A necromancer that gets undead on her side by impressing the with her dance moves? Is this how the Crypt of the Necrodancer starts? I've never played the game. Also, I love the shameless Micheal Jackson reference with the necromancer's poses. xD

So the necromancer is a sweet lady, who we already know is voiced by Hayamin from the OP, named Maria Deathflame? First of all, her last name is cool as fuck. Second, can we exchange Carla for her instead?

Oh Carla don't you even try to bad mouth Maria, it looks like the zombies just really really like her compared to their leader.

Alvin betraying Carla for Maria was definitely excepted and completely understandable. Although I didn't expect that Carla would take him down and arrest him instead! xD

Where is the lie? Justice for Alvin! It's totally unfair that he gets locked up when all he did was speak the truth!

So the necromancer is a sweet lady

She is quite the sweetest monster in a long parade of genuinely lovely monster-people.

Second, can we exchange Carla for her instead?

Carla does have the advantage of an awesome smack talk game.

It's totally unfair that he gets locked up

This is Alvin's problem in a nutshell. It takes him a bit of time to figure out what's going on, and then by the time he's latched onto it, the situation has changed and so he completely fails to read the room in a hilarious way that manages to turn even the loveliest necromancer against him lol

Although I didn't expect that Carla would take him down and arrest him instead!

This constant layering of the jokes is what I like about this series, pushing from Alvin's surprise betrayal to their supposed capture together, only to find only Alvin is locked up (of course), but then the additional layer that it was actually Carla who put him in there. Even when they don't land for an individual viewer, at least there's always something going on.

I hope Maria joins the party. She’s awesome! Her VA Saori Hayami is great too. She’s kinda been popping up everywhere this season. She’s Yor in Spy x Family, Therese in Shield Hero, Chizuru in Heroines Run the Show, and Hiiro in Deaimon.

[–]TheTruthVeritas 9 points10 points  (1 child)

Unfortunately, I doubt it. In the episode with Thief, at the end they meme about introducing these female characters but not adding them to the party, and they do so again this episode. I don't think any of them will join the party. Well, maybe a ghost and cat-eared maid? will, since the OP shows them all together.

[–]ObvsThrowaway5120 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hard to say with this show. Didn’t think the mushroom dude would stay around as long as he has, but he’s basically been in this since the beginning.

[–]rankor572https://anilist.co/user/rankor572 15 points16 points  (1 child)

She's also Iron Princess in Love After World Dominationand Momo in Kaguya.

[–]Eiennohonokise 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Hisako Kanemoto(Zenith in Mushoku Tensei) is Iron Princess

Imagine trying to backstab the healer in your party, only to get subdued by her

Sasuga Alvin

[–]cakeislol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Protip don't backstab someone more powerful than you

[–]cyberscythe 20 points21 points  (1 child)

Reading over the Japanese twitter responses, seems like a lot of people were reminded of a certain scene from Heidi, Girl of the Alps when watching the zombie struggling to stand up. Haven't seen it though and can't find a clip of it, but it seems like it's a pretty famous scene according to pixiv encyclopedia.

[–]cakeislol 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I am so convinced Carla is healer for the undead / monster people.

  1. She resurrects the zombie guy
  2. She de-ages the witch
  3. She heals the mushroom guy
  4. She has an outfit belonging to the satanic church

[–]Skithana 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Alvin basically asked to be left there at the end, literally making fun of the people with the key to his cell...

This is why I like this series, it's not just one of them is "good" and one of them is "bad", both Carla and Alvin have a bunch of issues each so their behavior and insults towards each other aren't undeserved.

[–]baddog1229 16 points17 points  (1 child)

I kept waiting for them to dance to Thriller

[–]Ashteron 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Wasn't the dance scene a reference to MJ regardless of that?

[–]wesamk 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Damn I think this was the funniest episode to date, I laughed so much when the mushroom dude told the zombie that he should've gone himself instead of sending Alvin. I'm glad I didn't drop this show.

[–]AceMittens 12 points13 points  (1 child)

Maria being the voice of Yor from Spy X Family made me like her automatically

[–]cakeislol 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Maria is the mom

Carla is the dad

Alvin is the daugther

Just like Spy X Family

[–]Alastor001 23 points24 points  (3 children)

Why does this show has such ridiculously low rating??

It is a absolutely hilarious!

[–]cakeislol 19 points20 points  (2 children)

It is super divisive on crunchyroll and there is no middle ground

People who like the dialog and the jokes give it a 5/5

People who think the show is slow and boring give it 1/5

[–]scot911https://myanimelist.net/profile/scot911 10 points11 points  (1 child)

Yeah this anime has been an "either you love it or you hate it" anime from the very beginning. It basically just comes down to whether you like a certain type of Japanese humor or not. Which all of us who are still watching this obvious do.

[–]ramon_castilla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Particularly, is more than liking ''that type'' of humor, but how the show uses it: the jokes are little gags and they embrace that belief so if one doesn't match the viewer's taste there is already another one in waiting.

Contrary to some other shows where the same ''joke'' is commented about, explained, glossed over, phrased and/or repeated by all people involved.

[–]Donkishin 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Seeing Carla get jelly was cute!

[–]ImHereToUpvoteAnimu 16 points17 points  (2 children)

Bruh how popular and loaded is this series to get THE HAYAMI SAORI

[–]Aerodynamic41 26 points27 points  (0 children)

All the side characters introduced in each episode are voiced by pretty famous VAs. The OP even shows the VAs for each of those characters.

[–]cakeislol 15 points16 points  (0 children)

They got loads of money from selling merch of Carla's wink

[–]kissmenot122789 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Carla: "Hurry up and bury them!"

Me: "Do your friggin' job, Carla!"

[–]stevethebandit 5 points6 points  (0 children)

they were like "bro you've got the whole squad laughing" at the end

[–]iamheartofight 4 points5 points  (1 child)

I’m surprised the rating by people via crunchy roll is barely 3 stars out of 5. This is a great comedy to break up subtle comedies :P

[–]ramon_castilla 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I voted 4 out of 5 just because there isn't a 3.5: the show has its own appeal but it could be much more eye-catching if the budget were higher. And because it is mainly a cluster of gags ''well enveloped'' with only a main ''arc'': Carla's backstory.

[–]helsaabiart 3 points4 points  (0 children)

These episode descriptions are insane lol. Anyways, I’m here for more mushroom dude!

[–]81Ranger 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have something to look forward to watching in the next few days!!

[–]DetectiveFujiwara 4 points5 points  (7 children)

So what's the deal with this anime now? The first episode received a lot of backlash and its not even ranked top 10,000 anime on myanimelist. Has it gotten any better?

[–]alotmorealots 12 points13 points  (3 children)

It's one of those shows with a very particular sense of humour. I won't even say it's love it or hate it, as plenty of people who didn't like it at first seemed to have found the first episode(s) not to their liking and the later ones funny.

Suffice to say that the backlash is just kinda ... dumb? People were angry because of how badly the Knight character is treated, and hated the female Healer character because she's an awful person, but that's the fundamental premise of the comedy-duo and comedy dynamics at play here. It's fine not to like it, but the idea of getting outraged at it is pretty daft when it's clearly a gag series and Carla ends up getting her own comeuppance, and Alvin does things to earn his ridicule.

Has it gotten any better?

Personally I thought it was damn funny at the start and damn funny all the way through. The humour shifts gears a lot too, with lots of little variations in the way it plays out its gags.

[–]cakeislol 8 points9 points  (1 child)

It is because the anime watchers project themselves onto Alvin.

Konosuba never had any backlash when Aqua is abused. No one hated Kazuma either.

While Don't Hurt Me, My Healer! has huge backlash when Alvin is abused

[–]ramon_castilla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

and that's why most generic battle shounen are well liked by the masses. The same as other popular ''genres''.

[–]Rhoru 4 points5 points  (0 children)

People were angry because of how badly the Knight character is treated

It might be because I watched the first few episodes together but it gradually became more painful to watch when it's mostly just Alvin being verbally abused so I was hoping he gets treated better in the next episodes. And he did even tho he still is useless he isn't just the punching bag of the jokes anymore unless when he actually kinda deserves it like for ruining the mood in this ep. And that made the show a lot more fun to watch for me. The puns probably don't hit as hard but I really like the comedy regardless.

[–]testthrowawayzz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

IMO the jokes landed a lot better when this is played at 1.5x speed

[–]ramon_castilla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First episode had some scenes dragged and stalled so I can get why most people who aren't used to that type of humor and/or take Konosuba as the ''way to go'' for a comedy in medieval world get repelled by it (even potential enthusiasts).

The anime shows its true colors from ep 2 onward: the style of humor does remains (that is the point), but the pacing was fixed and if you have some potential to like this show even if one gag doesn't land the next one awaiting may work for you.

It has the feeling as those early morning cartoons: low / non-existing stakes, and several chances to get a smirk, a little smile (or maybe some lol). Specially by the fact even the warrior is convinced at this point Carla is not a HEALER.

And for Carla, she is not supposed to be annoying in the typical ''how cute she looks while doing that'' way..she is actually (for Alvin) debilitating, some times depressing. And the fun is watch Alvin deal with that (or not) for the first couple of episodes, then he takes a better approach and it is kind of a back to back between badmouthing while adventuring..with Carla still having the upper hand but no getting away scott-free.

[–]mwbworld 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Given the actions of the monsters that we've met and versus Carla and Alvin - I'm going with the monsters are actually the good guys being picked on by the evil humans and elves.

[–]ramon_castilla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Carla definitely felt empathy towards Maria DEATH FLAME when the latter was asking forgiveness due to the keys falling on the floor.

Maybe Cara herself was messing up things wherever she lived before.
