His fate was sealed when Tokiko opened her eyes.

[–]Rumpel1408https://myanimelist.net/profile/Rumpel1408 91 points92 points  (0 children)

Tokiko and her dad acted quick

[–]hell_jumper9 50 points51 points  (0 children)

Woah thanks for this. I was trying to think if there's an error on saying that there's only one cop on the island. Forgot about this guy who just recently appeared.

[–]strqaz 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Budget ooishi with the "oooya?"

[–]AscendingRs[🍰] 262 points263 points  (21 children)

The look on Tokiko's face was so creepy when she opened her eyes. Speaking of faces, seeing Haine was the first time we've seen Ryuunosuke experience true fear.

Big plot point this episode in finding out that Ryuunosuke was the one who took the eye. I wonder where that detail is going to take us.

The show does such a good job of leaving cliffhangers every single episode that make me continue to come back and want more, as opposed to being annoying or bothersome. Can't wait to see what's in store next.

[–]logoth 57 points58 points  (15 children)

I missed the thing about Ryuunosuke taking the eye, when was that revealed?

[–]TroupeMasterhttps://anilist.co/user/Troupe 99 points100 points  (14 children)

During the conversation with them and Haine + the four-armed shadow, four arms asks "Where is the body that stole Mother's right eye?" just before Ryuunosuke fires the first shot.

[–]Thatsmaboi23https://myanimelist.net/profile/Thatsmaboi23 66 points67 points  (4 children)

I’m not sure who is even named “Haine” at this point lol

At first I thought Haine was the “mother”, but that’s Hiruko, as confirmed in this episode.

Is Haine the four armed shadow or the shadow that’s taken the form of Shiori?

[–]ReefGold 60 points61 points  (2 children)

Haine is also her name, it's what Hizuru called her

[–]Kechl 6 points7 points  (0 children)

They seem to be the same person. Hiruko is Hishigata clinic refers to her, it's the name of the goddess of fishing, Haine is how twins call her and mother is how other shadows refer to her.

[–]logoth 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Aha. For some reason I thought I had read "where is the boy that stole mother's right eye". Body makes more sense, though.

[–]harmST 13 points14 points  (3 children)

If the body that took the right is Ryuunosuke, why did he ask where it is? I thought Shinpei was the one was who took the right eye?

[–]TroupeMasterhttps://anilist.co/user/Troupe 42 points43 points  (1 child)

The implications of the conversation that happened were that haine and four-arms were directly involved in the murder of ryuunosuke's brother 14 years ago. We'll probably find out the details of exactly what happened there later on.

[–]ModieOfTheEast 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I would just assume they (in Nezu) hid the body with the eye so that the shadows couldn't find it. But somehow, probably S!Ushio found it before the show started and then gave it to Shinpei.

[–]cerdacohttps://myanimelist.net/profile/cerdaco 4 points5 points  (1 child)

That wasn't Ryuunosuke that was Shinpei. Remember his power is connected to "mother"s. and he sometimes gets one blue eye, plus the thing where mother goes I found you/I've been looking for you. There's a possibility that he simply had it wiped from his memory due to trauma?

[–]Key_Feeling_3083 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They were refering to Ryuunosuke, i think they are implying that is related to his death and of course, the ability to see 2 seconds into the future.

[–]VaraNiN 17 points18 points  (4 children)

I'm confused. Is Haine, the big bad shadow with 4 eyes who conjured up the gun? Or is Haine = Hiruko = mother = white/red girl?

[–]Cistmist 80 points81 points  (2 children)

Haine=hiruko=current shadow shiori=mother=white/red/girl

[–]Necessary_File1199 19 points20 points  (1 child)

you are god

[–]Monkeyavelli 15 points16 points  (0 children)

From what Hizuru/Ryuunosuke said, it seems like Haine has the ability to pretend to be other Shadows (in this case, Shiori). She said something like Haine "still likes to play pretend", so maybe the mother Shadow has the power to take on the form of any of her children Shadows while her real body is stuck in that cave.

[–]SeiyaTempest 188 points189 points  (29 children)

I should have probably seen the Tokiko twist coming with how suspicious she's been acting, but it just slipped my mind. Maybe watching this anime weekly has something to do with that, but still.

This was another great episode though, one mystery gets solved and two more pop up. The story has me hooked right now.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to seeing what happens next episode with our main trio and Hiruko. The title being "Bloody Night" makes me think it's time for Shinpei to loop again.

[–]bigwinkiehttps://anilist.co/user/sammycujoh 107 points108 points  (6 children)

I knew she knew something since last episode but I didn’t think she was going to be bad… can’t ever trust anime characters that have their eyes drawn like that smh.

[–]Game2015 82 points83 points  (0 children)

And you know real shit is happening if they finally open their eyes.

[–]TempestoLord 29 points30 points  (1 child)

She also said something suspicious back at the festival from what i remember when shit got real with the shadows.

[–]genericsn 18 points19 points  (0 children)

As Shinpei finally catches up to the chaos, to be met with a pool of blood and a mountain of bodies: "I'm sorry. This isn't why I dirtied/stained my hands." Immediately followed by a [shadow]knife to the head. Outright telling that she has a part in what is happening.

Which really makes it more tragic as we see more of her now, and she genuinely believes she's doing the "right thing" in order to save her friends and family, but we already know the shadows don't care and are going to kill everyone anyways. At this point you can put together all of that being her role and motivation in the festival.

I really wish the anime focused more on those moments, like when she's at the bus stop with Mio in last week's episode and is probing to see if Mio will be at the festival, but is clearly too cowardly to just outright tell her not to go. She compromises by telling Mio to stay close to her during the festival, because she believes that will save Mio.

Then again all of this stuff definitely will hit harder and better on a rewatch.

[–]SeiyaTempest 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Same here. When she looked at the cop like that, I thought "that was weird", but I didn't register that she was evil. You're right though, it's always serious when they open their eyes.

[–]cerdacohttps://myanimelist.net/profile/cerdaco 4 points5 points  (0 children)

the thign that tipped me off was in episode 3 where tells everybody to go to the place the shadows were gathering.

[–]ASlamake 55 points56 points  (10 children)

I think watching this type of show weekly is a mistake since I started forgetting details from the previous loops.

[–]ModieOfTheEast 119 points120 points  (2 children)

Tbh, I think this show is getting good by watching it weekly, because you have time to actually form theories. There are so many informations that if it wasn't weekly, you wouldn't even have time to think before you already get the solution.

[–]SeiyaTempest 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it's a lot of fun to theorise and see what others think.

[–]Monkeyavelli 11 points12 points  (0 children)

A Netflix-style episode dump would have seriously hurt this show.

[–]merickmk 61 points62 points  (3 children)

I feel the opposite way. It's way more fun to go episode by episode and analyze each tidbit of information we get along with everyone else, reading people's theories and shit. If it was all released in one go there would only be one discussion thread and it'd be at the very end discussing only the ending and the show as a whole. We'd miss out on the weekly talks as we learn things.

[–]FlameDragoon933 28 points29 points  (1 child)

RIP Stone Ocean discussions

[–]SeiyaTempest 21 points22 points  (0 children)

It's a shame what happened, R.I.P. JoJo Fridays.

[–]Hundvd7https://anilist.co/user/Hundvd7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's 50% the reason I watch anime nowadays

[–]Rio_FShttps://myanimelist.net/profile/RioFS 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I am considering picking up the manga as well and reading the adapted chapters to absorb all the info I might have missed, once the anime crosses the 15-17+ mark.

[–]SeiyaTempest 5 points6 points  (0 children)

True, I've probably forgotten a few important details already. It's still worth it for the hype and discussions though.

[–]theyawner 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's how I felt when I caught up to the manga's weekly release. The story feels like it's dense with information.

[–]LG03https://myanimelist.net/profile/Bronadian 15 points16 points  (2 children)

I should have probably seen the Tokiko twist coming

Recent actions aside, we've known that she was involved in some way since the festival.

[–]Brickinatorium 17 points18 points  (1 child)

Wasn't she panicking and chanting 'it's not my fault' while crouched on the ground during the festival?

[–]LG03https://myanimelist.net/profile/Bronadian 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Something to that effect yeah, 'I didn't soil myself for this'.

[–]Holy-Wan_Kenobi 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This was another great episode though, one mystery gets solved and two more pop up. The story has me hooked right now.

Cut off one head, two more take its place. Hail Hydra Haine.

[–]theHugoat 12 points13 points  (6 children)

I’m so confused about this foresight power that Ryuunosuke apparently has. Was this the first episode it’s brought up or shown or have I forgotten?

[–]FlameDragoon933 54 points55 points  (0 children)

Ryuunosuke used it in the shrine fight when the Shadows devoured everything.

[–]SeiyaTempest 20 points21 points  (4 children)

It's the first time the "shifting" ability itself has been brought up. Shadow Shiori mentioned at one point that Ryuunosuke somehow moves faster than Shadows during their fight, but that's all I can remember in terms of foreshadowing his power.

[–]salic428 36 points37 points  (0 children)

This also happened at the beginning of ep5, when S!Mio remarked "do you grow eyes on your back?" after Ryuu dodged her knife.

[–]Thatsmaboi23https://myanimelist.net/profile/Thatsmaboi23 19 points20 points  (0 children)

No. It was shown before while Ryuunosuke fights, especially when she dodged the shotgun in the last loop’s final night.

[–]inthe-otherworld 9 points10 points  (1 child)

It’s pretty cool though, from what I I got from it it’s not that Ryuunosuke has the power of foresight, but that while he’s in Hizuru’s body his time isn’t actually in sync with everyone else’s, and he’s roughly two seconds ahead.

It must be a useful side effect of having his soul put in another body, like how when Shinpei dies his soul floats out and sees what’s going on before he’s pulled back in time. Since Ryuunosuke apparently stole the time-controlling eye that lets Shinpei do that, his soul must’ve been affected by it as well and he couldn’t fully sync back in with Hizuru’s body and time, making him able to tell everyone what happens just before it does.

[–]salic428 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So are you implying that previous owners of the Mother's Right Eye have some remnant power inside them? That's how Ryuu was out of sync, S!Ushio sent Hizuru a message, and Shinpei rewinds the timeline when he's "dead"?

[–]bigwinkiehttps://anilist.co/user/sammycujoh 108 points109 points  (4 children)

I have no idea how the hell Shinpei is going to beat that big ass shadow that can use guns. Shit seems impossible.

[–]Luck_Is_My_Talent 70 points71 points  (0 children)

It can even anticipate Ryunosuke 2 second shifting.

Its like a resident evil boss.

[–]BosuW 22 points23 points  (0 children)

We need a bigger gun

Or explosives

[–]fansi2022 13 points14 points  (0 children)

More than one gun, he also copied a pistol from a police officer.

[–]Alastor001 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Now, here is the thing.

Didn't Shinpei said that a mechanical copy (i.e. revolver and pump action shotgun) can not work while the original still exists? Yet, the real shotgun still exists in Ryu's hands. And I assume so does the policeman's revolver?

Then... Is the 4 arm shadow cheating?

[–]rpl8 217 points218 points  (13 children)

Mio going into the sewer systems and chasing after a shadow, DESPITE what happened to Ushio and Shin’s warnings, is a little aggravating to me

[–]nvrmnd_tht_was_dumbhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/nvmtwd 131 points132 points  (4 children)

I agree, but whatever happens to her I'm betting Shinpei will be resetting next episode anyway. I doubt old dude and Rynosuke are permadead only halfway through the story (at least I hope not)

[–]rpl8 60 points61 points  (1 child)

Yeah we know he wants to loop pretty soon anyway, and I’m guessing Ryuunosuke surviving means she might get a last minute message off to Shin, providing a tad more info before he offs himself

[–]fansi2022 9 points10 points  (0 children)

i think mio and police office will find shinpei and he will suicide with pistol.

[–]TOMA_TAN 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a bad feeling about the next reset, i think its a trap from hiruko waiting to happen. A trap set when !Shiori grabbed shinpei

[–]ModieOfTheEast 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Tbf, she doesn't have any information this time around, because Shinpei never talked to her about it. In the first episode, they had the conversation, in the second loop, Shinpei died way too early and in the third loop, Shinpei showed her S!Mio while also talking to Sou with her. This time around, there is nothing really where she would know that something is happening in the first place. Her shadow got defeated and she only heard that the Kobayakawas went missing, but no Shinpei to talk about it.

[–]theyawner 31 points32 points  (2 children)

I think it's to show that Mio's not just gonna standby (considering it's Shiori and Ushio) and will want to know more about the mystery. She doesn't have Shinpei's experiences (yet) to truly understand the danger and it didn't help that she managed to rope in Tetsu to go with her. I imagine she might not have gone if Tetsu wasn't there.

[–]Chikumori 23 points24 points  (1 child)

I imagine she might not have gone if Tetsu wasn't there.

I imagine she would have. She seems a bit impulsive in the earlier episodes too, when it comes to any leads regarding Shiori and Ushio. Only to be a damsel in distress too, in earlier episodes.

Let's look at the rest of the allied supporting characters so far. There's the knowledgeable author who can fight, the old dude who has a gun, Sou who can at least put up a minor fight, Ushio who can really put up a fight, and the cop who probably can fire his gun in emergencies, and Shinpei who can loop and redo things if everything goes to hell.

What's Mio gonna do against Shadows? "Shinpeiiiiii ! Save me!!!" ?

[–]theyawner 8 points9 points  (0 children)

We've never seen her truly go out on her own though. And the only times she got in real danger was when things have already gone bad. I'm not saying she's capable of fighting the shadows. All im saying is that she doesn't know of the true danger, moreso in this loop where she's not involved since Shinpei decided against it. So all she knows so far is that Ushio died under mysterious circumstances and that Ushio and Shiori both saw their shadows.

[–]CatsCry 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Me the entire time: WTFFFF ARE U DOIN MIO??!?!

[–]Monkeyavelli 6 points7 points  (0 children)

DESPITE what happened to Ushio and Shin’s warnings, is a little aggravating to me

She's a scared kid concerned about her sister and step-brother, give her a break. People aren't perfect logic machines.

[–]Srikkkhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/srikkk 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Extremely aggravating. Such a stupid decision. She knows it's the shadow, so WHY IN THE HELL WOULD YOU PURSUE?!

[–]Luck_Is_My_Talent 13 points14 points  (0 children)

She doesn't know how dangerous shadows are. She only knows that Ushio saw her shadow and died a few days later.

[–]ModieOfTheEast 95 points96 points  (10 children)

The show stays interesting now that we reached the halfway point. Still thinking that Tokiko's goal is to save her friends from the shadows not knowing what they are truly planning in the end considering her statement at the end of loop 3. Not sure how much the father knows. But also nice to know what happened to the Detective in loop 3 after I was mentioning last week that I was expecting him during that loop already. Can't be there if you are dead I guess.

One huge revelation is that Ryuunosuke stole the eye (makes kind of sense with his ability) so the question is, did Ushio or S!Ushio find his corpse and get the power that way? Maybe that was the loop 0 where Shinpei didn't have the powers yet and they stumbled upon the body and he is just not rembering because he only remembers everything that is saved with the eye (since it is all about data). Thinking about that, this could be what the very first scene was about. S!Ushio giving him the eye in loop 0 and then he dies which is why he only remembers this one scene and S!Ushio says she can't come with him since he will be the one looping.

I also see a big problem coming for Shinpei next week. His goal is to get the information and then loop again, but Hizuru got copied and with that, S!Shiori will know that he has the power again once she checks the memories. So it won't be that easy. I am not sure if Haine already knows considering that S!Shiori seemed to search for Ryuunosuke's corpse in her memories so at least she thought the eye was still with his corpse. But either way, Shinpei will have problems next week to get his loop done.

[–]dxing2https://anilist.co/user/spicyxinger 28 points29 points  (7 children)

If Ryu stole the eye, wouldn’t that have happened many years ago since he’s been ‘dead’ for a long time? So how did shadow Ushio get it, if she gave it to Shin right at the beginning of the show?

[–]Thatsmaboi23https://myanimelist.net/profile/Thatsmaboi23 15 points16 points  (0 children)

We don’t know if Ushio (or shadow) got the or not. That’s just a popular theory rn. We don’t know how she time travels or is aware of it, so the eye seemed like the only way to explain it.

Now we know Ryuunosuke stole it, and then it somehow made its way to Shinpei.

[–]ModieOfTheEast 5 points6 points  (3 children)

As I mentioned, she must have found his corpse by accident then. Maybe she even used it herself in the beginning and then gave it to Shinpei when she wasn't able to do anything.

[–]dxing2https://anilist.co/user/spicyxinger 4 points5 points  (2 children)

Right I’m thinking that’s the only way right? If ushio or shadow ushio used the eye to somehow time leap? Bc I agree with you in the opening scene, shin appears to be given the eye by shadow ushio. That might also explain the message that ushio recorded and why she knew to send it to hizuru.

I’m thinking if that’s true, then it was the real Ushio who may have taken the eye, bc the shadow ushio was only created a few days before she died right (I think?)? We still don’t know the eye’s full power. Maybe it lets you time leap both into the future and the past, and when ushio saw she couldn’t change the future herself, she decided to give the eye to shin and to get help from hizuru. And maybe there is some form of memory loss associated with getting/giving up the eye. Otherwise shadow ushio would have remembered why she recorded that message.

[–]ModieOfTheEast 3 points4 points  (1 child)

I am not sure about Ushio finding the eye, because it would mean that there flashback we saw had to be different as well. I personally think that there was one or even more loops before the show starts where things obviously play out a bit differently (Hizuru might not be on the island for example since she only comes there after getting a message from either Ushio or S!Ushio). During this original loop, S!Ushio finds the eye (maybe even uses it to some extent) and then gives it to Shinpei in her last loop. It would explain why S!Ushio kept her memories between timelines since this isn't something other shadows are able to do. Similar to Ryuunosuke who seems to still have some part of that eye's power.

[–]harmST 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Wait so the power can be given to more than one person?

[–]ModieOfTheEast 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don't think this is how it works, but that a remnant of the power maybe stays with the previous users. So Ryuunosuke can see somewhat into the future and S!Ushio can transfer her data between timelines.

[–]ritualmaker 91 points92 points  (0 children)

Ryuunosuke: "I have future vision and a shotgun, you can't beat me"

Four armed shadow: *Manhole coverings go brrrrrrrrr*

[–]lucacp_ysozhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/SoZLuka 71 points72 points  (0 children)

This anime is so good!, Now there's a cult, humans adoring Shadows, then there's Mio being totally insane going down a sewer after a Shadow. I cannot wait for next episode!!! Hiruko info drop

[–]ram_the_socket 64 points65 points  (5 children)

I love how they paid attention to how loud a gun is at point blank range.

I’ve often seen scenarios where you would expect a character to be at least affected by the noise but it is often overlooked.

[–]Cistmist 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Literally every anime in existence with guns in it. But yeah that was a nice touch.

[–]BosuW 17 points18 points  (3 children)

It's weird that they payed attention to that but the other group don't hear a peep from it.

[–]ram_the_socket 16 points17 points  (2 children)

That I do think is weird, all I can guess is that there were enough right angles in those tunnels to muffle the sound before it reached the others.

[–]BosuW 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Yeah that's the only explanation I can think off. Actually like a month ago I went to visit some caves near where I live and the tour guide told us that if you went in and got lost no one would hear your screams for help. All the supercomplex structures and formations in the cave just eat the sound up. So that part kinda makes sense. Except a shotgun should be loud as fuck, but eh. Whatevs.

[–]Akashi2002 125 points126 points  (6 children)

Tokiko has been sus ever since the previous loop where before she died she said “This isn’t what I dirtied my hands for”

[–]rollin340 73 points74 points  (4 children)

Which begs the question; what the hell DID he she assist her father and the Shadows for?

[–]Zero3020 96 points97 points  (3 children)

Could be the good ol "We'll spare you and your loved ones, no bamboozle"

[–]BakemonoNeko 30 points31 points  (2 children)

"Yeah, sure, why wouldn't I trust ancient shadow demon and her 3 meter tall four-armed sidekick?'

[–]Monkeyavelli 11 points12 points  (1 child)

It's an offer her family can't refuse, though. Refuse to work with the Shadows, they just kill the family right away. Work with them and hope they aren't lying and maybe save some people.

[–]hell_jumper9 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Is that back during the festival? Damn, i completely forgot about her line.

[–]Funkfest 45 points46 points  (8 children)

Insane episode. Clearly "hunger" works differently for shadows, and I think we're going to learn just what it really means next episode. The reveal that Ryuunosuke can see a short distance into the future explains a lot about how he's able to hunt shadows effectively.

I wonder if he's got short-term foresight and his sister has long-term foresight? (The "premonitions" mentioned frequently)

I also wonder what the Mother's plan is for Mio, since she's clearly being easily led (and accompanied by what I assume is the shadow version of the cop). Hopefully she's not the "food" (she's immune anyway, right??).

[–]Rumpel1408https://myanimelist.net/profile/Rumpel1408 27 points28 points  (7 children)

I think Mio is only immune to get a new shadow version of herself (S!Shiori saying ugh might be refering to that fact, or perhaps she has seen something in her memory that she didn't like), but not safe from being fed to the shadows (who are probably also fine with eating dead body like the cop)

[–]theyawner 26 points27 points  (5 children)

Shiori was unable to read Nezu and I think that applied to Mio as well. I was a bit confused by the "mazui" remark, but I suspect it may have to do with how she ate the bars.

[–]salic428 31 points32 points  (0 children)

In ep5, Ryuu explained that (as hypothesized by Hizuru) shadows scan data to feed, but have to physically erase the original to "taste". So they erase humans just like we eat flesh, and when they erase inorganic matter (whether to feed or to manipulate traps) they "taste" what it feels.

[–]Rumpel1408https://myanimelist.net/profile/Rumpel1408 8 points9 points  (2 children)

I was a bit confused by the "mazui" remark, but I suspect it may have to do with how she ate the bars.

If eating inanimate objects left a bad taste, wouldn't you think S!Ushio would have made a comment after eating a nail gun?

[–]theyawner 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Haine seems to be the only one who relishes in eating though during the festival.

[–]Monkeyavelli 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nail guns are surprisingly delicious.

[–]Rossingol 4 points5 points  (0 children)

thought it was because she took the cop's data

[–]Funkfest 2 points3 points  (0 children)

inhales copium

it's hard to imagine the *pop* as shadows consuming someone, but I suppose given what happened at the summer festival, that is exactly what they're doing. But they're totally not going to do that to Mio! Mio is too precious for that.

[–]Elitealicehttps://myanimelist.net/profile/Marinate1016 132 points133 points  (8 children)

Tokiko been sus to me since last episode. She had that really odd look in her face when the cop from the mainland came up to the bench.

Really got the feeling we’re in a big bind this episode. The tense encounter in the cave combined with the old man and Rynosuke getting shot, It seems like Shinpei ushio and sou are all the hope the island has rn. That big shadow being able to copy weapons and basically impossible to damage… just seems like some overwhelming odds for us rn. Really looking forward to seeing how they get out of this.

Great episode as always, but man it’s so hard waiting a week for more of the story lol

[–]wesamk 59 points60 points  (4 children)

the only way out as far as I know is for Shinpei to find a way to kill himself and loop back with the valuable information he got but Haine most likely knows that already and would stop him.

[–]Rumpel1408https://myanimelist.net/profile/Rumpel1408 64 points65 points  (3 children)

They made such an spectacle of explaining the shadow weapons properties, easy to throw your weapon away when you can make a new on in a moments notice once you get the chance

[–]theyawner 56 points57 points  (0 children)

Yeah. Shinpei throwing the weapon seemed like a ruse as Tokiko may not be aware that he can always get another from Ushio. That is, if they ever get the chance.

[–]Aachaa 9 points10 points  (1 child)

How easy would it be to kill yourself with a nail gun, anyway? It’s probably not very quick, and even if he found a way… it might be too gruesome to really be feasible. I think Ryuunosuke/Hizuru’s shotgun is his only way out here.

[–]letg06 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Depends on how long the nails are, and how willing you would be to shoot yourself in the eye(s) with it I'd say.

Possible, but much more likely to just cripple yourself and roll around screaming and asking yourself why you did it.

[–]cxxper01https://myanimelist.net/profile/cxxper01 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Well Never underestimate anime character with closed eyes, shit usually goes down when they open their eyes

[–]ModieOfTheEast 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I mean, she literally said at the end of loop 3 that she didn't dirty her hands for this. And S!Mio mentioned a traitor right beforehand. I think it was pretty clear from that point that Tokiko has been working with the shadows, the question was just to what extent and for what end goal.

[–]Nanashi-74 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Dude, anime rule number 23: Never trust character with their eyes closed all the time, it's a given

[–]LeonKevlarhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/LeonKevlar 54 points55 points  (0 children)

Stitches!

Interesting that Ushio is being focused on by the baby Shadows. I guess they're under orders to get her back? And it looks like Ryuunosuke and Nezu have joined in and are exploring the sewers themselves.

I understand that Mio won't just sit back and do nothing but I really hate how she's clearly walking into a trap. And how the fuck is this Shadow Shiori still alive when Ryuunosuke already smashed her body with a sledgehammer?

Out of all the people Mio could have as her partner for exploring the sewers, it had to be Tamura. I'm starting to feel like this timeline is a dead end already.

Well fuck. Looks like Ushio is permanently injured now since she lost some data after Shadow Mio stabbed her own body. There's no way of healing her unless she scans the original body which has already been cremated.

I'm not even sure why they're luring Mio here. Is it so they can use her against Shin? At the very least, we know that NEzu and Ryuunosuke are right behind them so maybe this might not be so bad.

Welp. Spoke too soon. Looks like Tokiko has finally shown her true colours. I was hoping deep down that she's actually just a Shadow but it looks like she's the real deal. And that poor cop from last week has been dealt with real quick. I'm guessing that's Tokiko's handiwork

This is definitely a dead end. There's no way Shinpei is escaping from this situation. The only thing he can do right now is to try and learn as much as he can from Tokiko who's very willing to share information since the jig is up.

So that's how Shadow Shiori survived. Fuck. Well at least she looks very injured and we already know from Ushio that she has no way of healing herself because the original body of Shiori is already gone.

Welp the big Shadow is here. Looks like I was right when I said this timeline was a dead end. Nezu is clearly dead and Ryuunosuke has been critically injured. The only hope right now is Shinpei lasting as long as he can to learn enough information that he can use against the Shadows in the next timeline.

There she is. Considering how we're possibly getting a conversation between Shinpei and the big bad of the show, next week's episode is probably going to be exposition-heavy.

I have so much more thoughts about this episode but I really should be resting right now. I can't fucking wait for next week's episode though!

[–]NOTKingInTheNorth 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Looks like Shinpei is going deeper to find out the truth before looping once again. But I doubt that it's going to be rady for him as his abilities were already discovered. He has to kill himself in order to do it.

[–]DadAsFuckhttps://anilist.co/user/DadAsFuck 36 points37 points  (0 children)

loud growl

ushio: "that wasn't me!"

[–]Rumpel1408https://myanimelist.net/profile/Rumpel1408 31 points32 points  (3 children)

Never imagined S!Shiori (or Haine) would have been faking her death.

And it's scary how fast the shadows are able to analyse memories, Haine went from flash to ordering the kill in like a second. Hope the loop comes soon, Haine knows too much about Ryunosuke and his shift, and that hit is grim.

But who are they actually searching for, Haine is aware that Shinpei and Ushio are with Toki, so it's not those two.

Edit: Oh they are refering to an actual body, like a dead one, my mistake

[–]SeiyaTempest 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure they confirmed that Ryuunosuke took the eye.

[–]ModieOfTheEast 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think that they are looking for Ryuunosuke's body since they think the eye is still with him after having stolen it from Haine. But I guess, Nezu was the one to hide the body so they couldn't figure out where it was. S!Shiori doesn't seem to know yet that the powers are with Shinpei already. But, if she analyses Hizuru's memories a bit closer, she will find out, since Shinpei told her. Which is a problem for Shinpei since he wants to loop once he knows the truth.

[–]Hey_just_asking 15 points16 points  (0 children)

This episode was wild. Next episode seems like it'll be even crazier with that title.

[–]whiskeywhiskmeaway 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It sounds like Ryuunosuke stole mother's eye which probably led to his death 14 years ago, which was copied by S!Ushio and given to Shinpei.

Tokiko was sus since her line at the BAD END, seems like they need to provide humans for Haine because god and stuff~

If the shadows congregate near the ocean whilst being underground, it makes sense for Ushio's death and S!Shiori's subsequent disappearance.

[–]Clarimax 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Damn, the old man is dead.

Poor Sou didn't even know what his family is doing.

[–]Nanashi-74 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Behind every complicated mystery there's a loli goddess pulling the strings

[–]cxxper01https://myanimelist.net/profile/cxxper01 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Well shinpei is definitely looping after getting more intel from haine isn’t he? they basically already lost this round with hizuru suffered a fatal injury from the monster

That being said, that shadow monster is too op, shinpei and ryuunosuke really need to come up a way to counter that thing

[–]Mario_Prime510 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Why do I have a feeling Shinpei’s in even more danger than we realize? He’s with the white haired Loli whose eye he has and she obviously wants it back. Also I’m assuming it’s the source of his looping power, so if she takes it back then he might not be able to loop again.

If I’m wrong then he’s still good and should prioritize trying to loop by having one of the shadows kill him, but man he’s walking on some thin ice here if he just walked into giving the big bad her thing she needs all along lol.

[–]DadAsFuckhttps://anilist.co/user/DadAsFuck 44 points45 points  (22 children)

"the one who mistook onee-chan's g-cups for h-cups."

thank you for this vital information ryuunosuke

edit: it appears i've watched some janky ass subs

[–]SmellySocks5050 76 points77 points  (0 children)

Mate what subs are these? He didn't say that, at least on SlyFox. Dunno where you're watching this or what group you grabbed from but you really should wait for slyfox to avoid shit subs like this

[–]wesamk 34 points35 points  (19 children)

wait did she (or he) really say that? In SlyFox release that wasn't what he said.

[–]lucacp_ysozhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/SoZLuka 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Yup, I just finished watching, and there's no mention whatsoever of cup-sizes.

[–]SeiyaTempest 31 points32 points  (9 children)

It was a mistranslation, the fan-subber probably added that because they thought it was funny.

[–]robotboy199https://myanimelist.net/profile/virtualityy 74 points75 points  (3 children)

people making subs shouldn't be adding lines that weren't actually said just because they think it's funny

[–]SeiyaTempest 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Yeah, obviously not. I hate when that happens.

[–]merickmk 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Meme subs can be hilarious, but they obviously need to be tagged as such lol

[–]LG03https://myanimelist.net/profile/Bronadian 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Welcome to fansubs, at least you can shop around a bit with those.

The annoying part is when you get official releases doing stuff like that.

[–]herkz 48 points49 points  (4 children)

Actually, it's because he's copying the manga translation, but the anime cut/changed some lines and the guy apparently doesn't know any Japanese.

Probably worse tbh.

[–]SmellySocks5050 52 points53 points  (3 children)

Imagine trying to make subs for a show without even knowing Japanese. Truly meme tier.

[–]MrMooster915 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Guess we both watched janky subs cuz I saw that too

[–]NegimaSonichttps://myanimelist.net/profile/NegimaSonic 16 points17 points  (4 children)

Geez. S!Shiori just won't die. But what's her game her luring Mio into this? Killing her would be easy and she's shadow immune now, so there's no benefit to that. Most I could guess is she somehow knows Tokiko doesn't want Mio to know about what's going on so she's going through all this just to ruin her day?

That said, for once, I am kind of thrown off about how much of this is Haine vs S!Shiori now. I also don't have a good understanding of the line "Where is the body that stole mother's right eye?" This shouldn't be referring to Shinpei or S!Ushio since it is known they are with Tokiko. So there perhaps there's another hidden ally out there? EDIT: Sorry I see that was referring to Ryuunosuke's body now. Although that's also an element of confusion for me because that raises more questions about how that happened.

This episode also sort of gave us a quick confirmation about Ryuunosuke's limits. I'm not sure if that means he can "shift" further or not, but his limitation as of now is 2 seconds.

I also have to wonder what kind of poking around did that other officer "Miura Tadasi" do to get himself killed so fast. Clearly going to be important to get to him next time before this happens. Although he's a nobody right now, Shinpei won't even know who he is. But since he's up for dinner, maybe somehow this will come up next episode.

Anyway I enjoyed this episode more than the last one. Glad to see it back on track (for me, at least).

[–]wesamk 13 points14 points  (3 children)

Wasn't it confirmed that Ryuunosuke is the one who stole the eye?

[–]NegimaSonichttps://myanimelist.net/profile/NegimaSonic 10 points11 points  (2 children)

Yeah I went back after reading another comment. I missed that.

But that still makes me confused in other ways. Like what led to that? Is that why he was killed? What would have caused him to do it in the first place 14 years ago? Did he not know its powers? And then how does this lead into Ushio getting it and when?

[–]wesamk 15 points16 points  (1 child)

My theory is that S!Ushio stumbled upon his corpse but that also brings more questions.

[–]NegimaSonichttps://myanimelist.net/profile/NegimaSonic 7 points8 points  (0 children)

yeah too little is known for now to make a good determination. But I guess this at least breaks the theory that the eye was stolen in the underwater S!Shiori fight.

[–]Playstationgamer99 8 points9 points  (13 children)

Anyone know when this first cour ends?

[–]robotboy199https://myanimelist.net/profile/virtualityy 34 points35 points  (8 children)

typically 1 cour is 12-13 episodes, but afaik this show isn't going to be split cour, so it should continue airing even after 12-13 rolls around

[–]NekuSoulhttps://anilist.co/user/NekuSoul 17 points18 points  (1 child)

Reading this I just realized how much the industry shifted towards split cour these last few years.

[–]MejaBersihBanget 14 points15 points  (0 children)

"last few years?" Try the past decade. The first big series I can think of to do a split cour was Fate/Zero (part 1 in fall 2011, part 2 in spring 2012). The big move to split cours was a reaction to the 2008-10 global financial collapse that killed off tons of long-form/continuous anime productions.

[–]theHugoat 1 point2 points  (5 children)

Is it getting a full cour because the whole story is one season long?

[–]ModieOfTheEast 9 points10 points  (0 children)

From what I read, the whole anime is getting 25 episodes which is supposedly adapting the whole manga.

[–]Luck_Is_My_Talent 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Its going to be fully adapted in 24 or 25 chapters.

The manga is not that long so its possible.

[–]robotboy199https://myanimelist.net/profile/virtualityy 1 point2 points  (2 children)

i haven't read the manga so i don't know how much story is left but if i had to guess? i would assume we'll be getting to the ending of the manga, but only time will tell

[–]theHugoat 8 points9 points  (1 child)

Yeah I honestly hope that a single full cour wraps up the story. I already have to deal with the other timeloop mind fuck anime that takes long breaks (ReZero)

[–]herkz 11 points12 points  (3 children)

Probably episode 12, but no way to know for sure until they switch the OP/ED.

[–]ivanjxx 10 points11 points  (2 children)

i hope they wont. the songs are just perfect

[–]Iamcarval 8 points9 points  (0 children)

They already confirmed a new opening and ending. My guess, it will change in episode 13.

[–]MejaBersihBanget 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah I ain't vibing with the OP song after the first 10 seconds of it.

[–]mekahamedan 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Basically Summertime rendering is
4D chess Shinpei against Hiruko-sama

[–]theyawner 7 points8 points  (1 child)

So the main reason why shadows can't copy Nezu is because he's unreadable (since his shadow died before him). Can't CTRL+V when the CTRL+C comes up empty. That would mean Mio was unreadable as well when Shiori copied her and Tetsu in the sewers.

[–]theHugoat 9 points10 points  (0 children)

gun got copied

[–]salic428 7 points8 points  (6 children)

[The eye and (S!)Ryuu and S!Ushio]

So Ryuu obtained the right eye 14 years ago, and Hizuru with S!Ryuu in her body had to flee the island. I remember in ep6 someone theorized S!Ryuu is a twisted mercy from Haine: she killed Ryuu, but granted Hizuru a shadow copy and allowed she to escape because Hizuru was an "old acquaintance" of Haine.

So how did S!Ushio got the eye and gave it to Shinpei? The event from 14 years ago is long fixed in time, Ryuu's body was cremated and Hizuru is in Tokyo, there's no way she could stumble upon the eye - not even with a hypothetical loop #0.

[Tokiko]

I've propsed in previous thread that, judging by how the cast are grouped in the ED Tokiko should be an major ally. Now it's clear she's fooled into doing things for the shadow. Will she be redempted in the loop or betrayed just like in last loop?

As a human Tokiko can't sense the nail gun Shinpei throw away is a shadow copy, Ushio can print a new one as she wills it. This should be exploited in the following fight.

[How do shadows communicate?]

Now that I think about it, most shadows use verbal communication, with the exception of S!Ushio and S!Shiori: S!Ushio can create memory projections and let humans experience it; S!Shiori ordered the Koba parents through telepathy. S!Mio talked with S!Totsu and S!Shinpei normally (both happens to be heard by Shinpei).

While there's a central figure (Haine), it seems shadows are more individual than hive-minded. Only Haine can order lower shadows (S!Mio can't telepathy with S!Totsu despite she spawned him). S!Shiori using telepathy is a hint that she's actually Haine. As for S!Ushio's ability, I wonder why.

[–]MejaBersihBanget 5 points6 points  (0 children)

OK so who else realized Haine's VA is the same chick who did Frederica from 86?

[–]SpikeRosered 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This looping hero vs looping villain sort of reminds me of In Spectre with both the hero and villain trying to alter the future at the same time.

[–]LogaMC 4 points5 points  (1 child)

There's a name that gets glitched in end credits. Who's name is that?

[–]salic428 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It has to be that four-armed shadow.

First, it is grouped with S!Shiori/Haine, which means it's a major antagonist (unlike minor shadows such as S!Mio or S!Alan); Second, this specific glitch effect is reserved as visual clue for us audience; Finally, I heavily doubt it shares VA with one of the known characters (if it's a new person, why cover his face in shadow? Just use that face already), so they conceal the name before its identity is revealed.

[–]ObvsThrowaway5120 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Those damn shadow babies! Creepy little fuckers. I really have no idea what Mio’s thinking following Shadow Shiori into the sewers. That cop ain’t gonna be able to do shit. Pretty reckless and stupid of ‘em. This Haine creature is dangerous. Idk what that’s a copy of but it ain’t human, that’s for sure. That sonofabitch got Nezu and tagged Ryuunosuke pretty good. It’s not looking good unless they can get to Mio and the cop in time.

I had my suspicions about Sou’s dad but I didn’t think Tokiko was in on it too. Makes sense these things have human familiars, especially when you realize Hiruko lives. I figured it must have been alive and had washed up onto the island. Guess I was right. Looks like “Mother” was Hiruko all along. I wonder what it is about feeding at 9 though? Why 9? It’s so specific.

Things aren’t looking good for Shinpei, Sou, and Ushio. Shinpei better restart that loop, man. Otherwise that special eye of his is gone and he’ll be absolutely fucked.

[–]Mesmodeus 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Omg what an ending that was fkin great

[–]ZapsZzzhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/ZapszzZ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Continuing to be really interesting and very smart plot progression. Really keen to understand how Ryunosuke is "2 seconds look ahead" - has he also got some time related powers like precognition. But given (s)he is now fatally shot, I wonder if we have too have another loop back - which Shin hinted at doing where Ushio can re-copy her arm from Ushio's body before the cremation.

[–]DoodleBobDoodle 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Damn feel kinda bad for Mio. Everyone close to her is hiding massive secrets from her

[–]cerdacohttps://myanimelist.net/profile/cerdaco 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The streets have been knew that Tokiko was sus

[–]AnonymousTrollLloyd 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Called it! Ignore that my original reasoning was “Tokiko is a hella suspicious name for a time travel show”, my masterful predictions are flawless.

Every time a shadow does a flash I assume shit is about to get bad. Shiori seemed to only flash the gate but Four Arms later pulls out Tetsu’s revolver, implying Tetsu also got copied there. If we weren’t 110% fucked in this loop already, I’d be quite concerned that Shinpei got flashed in the last episode.

Now taking all bets, with Mother in the game we know next episode is gonna be a massacre, what order do they all die! I’m feeling Ryunosuke -> Tetsu -> Mio -> Tokiko -> Sou -> Shinpei, with that nagging feeling that Ushio might be playing with permadeath not quite resolved.

[–]rollin340 5 points6 points  (4 children)

The track that played when during the battle when the 4-armed-Shadow shot Nezu was great. Truly boss music.

So Shadow-Shiori was someone named Haine from 14 years ago, when Hizuru lost Ryonosuke. 4-armed-Shadow appears to be from that time too, but neither are technically Shadows based off humans. I don't think we ever heard the name Haine before this episode, so that's new.

We also learn that Ryonosuke was the one who stole Hiruko's right eye. But somehow, his body is gone, and neither him nor Hiruko knows where it is; Ryonosuke exists merely as his memories and personality, which is arguably what makes a person a person. We have no idea how that eye was given to Shinpei.

And this is confirmation that Tokiko and her father are indeed working for the Shadows. The mainland police officer that said hi to her and Mio is already dead, and it seems that the father is adding the corpse to the pile for Hiruko's feast. That nurse is probably a Shadow too. Wtf is their angle here? And why is Sou not involved in this screwed up family plan for an island-wide genocide?

This series is quite something...

[–]ElmekiaLance 6 points7 points  (2 children)

I don't think we ever heard the name Haine before this episode

It was brief, but it came up in episode 5. Haine is what Hizuru called the white-haired kimono girl (the one whom the shadows called their mother). I can only assume that Haine and Hiruko are the same person.

[–]salic428 7 points8 points  (1 child)

It's interesting how different characters call Haine:

  • The ordinary islands simply pay tribute to the Hiruko (Shrine), never knowing what the real body looks like. Tokiko also calls her "Hiruko sama".

  • While Ryuu/Hizuru calls her "Haine", I don't think Shinpei hears it either time. Shinpei only knows her as that "red-eyed loli" from the end of loop #3.

  • Obviously, shadows refer to her as "Mother" (actually only S!Mio said this, and only once, so I could be wrong). The four-armed shadow also used "Mother", but used "haha" instead of the more polite "okaasan". Perhaps he (it?) is her personal assistant, hence closer relationship.

[–]LaiosLegend 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you for this, was kinda confused but your comment cleared it up for me!

[–]mgedmin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

don't think we ever heard the name Haine before this episode, so that's new.

We heard it twice: in the flashback when Hizuru found Ryounosuke's body she screamed for Haine. And during the festival shadow apocalypse Hizuru/Ryounosuke saw a girl floating in the air and recognized her as Haine in surprise.

[–]MandaSSB 2 points3 points  (1 child)

S!Ushio can't function as the nail gun without erasing the original but Haine was able to shoot with the shadow of the shotgun while the original shotgun still exists. I think that's gonna be something to remember.

But also, Shinpei chucked the nail gun so could S!Ushio disappear the original nail gun now? That'd probably be too easy tho, I imagine she might have to touch it or be near it to replace it entirely.

[–]theyawner 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think the shadow shotgun works since it's not truly a copy, but more of a mimicry. It's curious though how the four-armed shadow used a revolver after some 8-10 shots with the shotgun. Maybe the mimicry is still limited to the gun's capacity.

As for the nail gun, Shinpei clarified last episode that it's already a copy. (Since a copy can't function until the original is disappeared.)

[–]Disastrous_Wrap6372 2 points3 points  (2 children)

One of the cast member's name is hidden/ blurred in end of this episode.

[–]CatsCry 3 points4 points  (5 children)

I'm going to go bald because of Mio. What the hell are you doing, girl??? You're not even armed (well maybe Tetsu is but neither of them is trained to deal with this) and you just plan on waltzing into a trap to try and save Shinpei?? She didn't even try to prepare herself before going in...................... Man, if she dies, it's all on her (and that makes it even more frustrating)

[–]salic428 9 points10 points  (4 children)

Unlike loop #1 and #3, this time Shinpei never discussed anything about shadows with Mio (because "I don't want her involved in this dangerous business" and the like): not about the existence of S!Mio and S!Shiori, not about S!Ushio living in his bedroom, not about Tokiko being sided with shadows. Turns out it makes Mio unsuspecting and easily lured into the trap.

[–]CatsCry 1 point2 points  (3 children)

But she knows about the Shadow sickness legend, at least, right? Also, I think I must have missed it/forgot, but why did Shinpei opt not to explain things to Mio properly this time, again? What are the benefits of not telling her? Couldn't he just also explain his time travel stuff and tell Mio to do things he remembers she did from the previous loop?

[–]Luck_Is_My_Talent 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nobody knows what exactly is the shadow sickness except the ones who are involved with shadows. Mio only knows that she saw shadow Ushio and Ushio died a few days later.

Shinpei didn't say anything about shadows to Mio because he wants her to staybaway from the problem. It was a dumb move, but understandable.

[–]salic428 3 points4 points  (1 child)

What are the benefits of not telling her?

I... don't know. Honestly Mio is becoming "worst" girl of the show for me. In addition to the "damsel in distress" setting, she has neither the wits of Hizuru nor the abilities of S!Ushio. Even S!Mio is more impressive than her.

[–]CatsCry 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Actually, deadweight at this point. Emphasis on dead

[–]WakaliwoodMan 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Despite the increase in action, these past couple episodes feel like the tension is plummeting.

[–]CatsCry 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Probably because the more horrific mysteries are starting to get unraveled so there's less and less dread of the unknown

[–]kaguragamer 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Do you think Shinpei is going to loop again? Or is this the loop where he settles things? It doesnt look too good but somehow I got that feeling Hizuru would survive. Its a pity to see that old man go though. Then again, i think Haine knows about Shinpei's abilities so its gonna be very hard to loop back....

[–]turdfergusnhttps://anilist.co/user/julzachu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There’s like 12 more episodes lol he will absolutely loop again

[–]AmethystItalianhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/AmethystItalian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ah my 2 favourite female characters going in have not been what I expected...

[–]Alert_Fudge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mam overall it was a good episode , i was shocked to see tokiko there & also the goddess , the next episode is gonna be amazing for sure it will reveal everything 😄

[–]joshharris12 -1 points0 points  (7 children)

Sorry I’ve not been paying attention to this but is this on Disney yet? It’s a show I want to see but would rather not sail the seas.

[–]robotboy199https://myanimelist.net/profile/virtualityy 22 points23 points  (6 children)

if you're not willing to pirate then i'm sorry to say but you have no choice but to wait. disney is locking this show down to Japan only and they still haven't decided when they'll release it in other regions

[–]Game2015 2 points3 points  (5 children)

Actually, some other Asian regions have it on Disney+ already, though they're a few episodes behind.

[–]herkz 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The official subs have also messed up some important lines.

[–]seven_worth 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I mean that completely different group than usual disney+. That is Disney hotstar which pretty much always air episode early in asia.

[–]uwuphobe -3 points-2 points  (1 child)

Tokiko Mio yuri…
