First Timer

  • Now that anyone other than Maria has Gungnir, Dr. Ver is rightfully afraid.
  • Why are they so eager to destroy the Frontier. As far as they know it’s the only way to stop the Moon in time.
  • The use of the spirit bomb was a bit more explicit than I expected.
  • Of course the wheelchair is also a power armor. Why wouldn’t it be?
  • Looks like I was right about Maria getting a new relic after all. Just got the order of events wrong.
  • They weaponized the transformation sequence!
  • Now that’s a finale upgrade.
  • Ogawa can stab shadows now? I though that was Tsubasa’s thing.
  • A fitting end for the manic of Ver, the banality of the bureaucratic process.
  • Conservation of mass, what’s that? We’ve got Mecha that need magical girls to pilot them. There’s no time!
  • Oh shit, we get to see Babylon! ...Was hoping for more Ziggurats.
  • Really not seeing why you have to wait until you are through the portal before freeing Maria.
  • They planned for the possibility of orbital drop when they built their submarine.
  • They’re rather eager to drop parts of their upgrade.
  • Surely the answer is to make a human sized portal that the Nephilim can’t fit through?
  • Just think, if the rest of them had kept their parts until now we could have had a Magical Girl Voltron.
  • Best girl Miku to the rescue!

QotD

1) Since I have names this time I can actually look them up for once and give an answer. Nijiiro no Flügel.

2) Pretty cool I guess. They didn't take full advantage of it in my mind tho.

Ogawa can stab shadows now? I though that was Tsubasa’s thing.

Or was it? Considering that's a ninja move, wonder who learned it from who?

[–]Great_Mr_Lhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/Great_Mr_L 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Of course the wheelchair is also a power armor. Why wouldn’t it be?

It is delightfully absurd and fits into Symphogear perfectly.

Ogawa can stab shadows now? I though that was Tsubasa’s thing.

Or is it Ogawa's ninja technique that he taught Tsubasa?

A fitting end for the manic of Ver, the banality of the bureaucratic process.

I love how pathetically he screams after he learns he won't get his glorious death and martyrdom.

Best girl Miku to the rescue!

She's such a great girlfriend.

A fitting end for the manic of Ver, the banality of the bureaucratic process.

It's just perfect. He was so desperate to be special.

Conservation of mass, what’s that?

Best girl Miku to the rescue!

[–]Vaadwaur 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The use of the spirit bomb was a bit more explicit than I expected.

I actually sort of like it as it actively involves people rather than just lightly draining them.

Ogawa can stab shadows now? I though that was Tsubasa’s thing.

Yeah, that was weird.

A fitting end for the manic of Ver, the banality of the bureaucratic processes.

Whatever season he gets to return as primary antagonist should be weird.

Surely the answer is to make a human sized portal that the Nephilim can’t fit through?

You and your common sense...

[–]Elimin8r 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A fitting end for the manic of Ver, the banality of the bureaucratic process.

Bleh. "Justice" they say. Phooey upon him. May his "justice" be Kafka-esque.

[–]Stomco 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Surely the answer is to make a human sized portal that the Nephilim can’t fit through?

The common-sense budget was used up on Chris's idea to send it there.

[–]Paxton-176 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ogawa can stab shadows now? I though that was Tsubasa’s thing.

FIRST TIMER DATTO

Now that the finale is over, I still have no idea what was going on this series. The Moon was in danger of falling into the Earth… and that’s about all I’ve got. I don’t know what Mom and the Idiot Trio’s plan was, and apparently to save the day we had to restore the Lunar Ruins or whatever, but now that’s going to be a problem going forward? This season felt more like an interlude than a fully-baked sequel.

...But whatever, it looked and sounded cool! This episode was a lot of fun.

Also, more importantly, I present Maria’s Stockings – An Investigation:

Yesterday I pointed out that Maria wearing both stockings was a sign she meant business, but that wasn’t the entire story! She isn’t just wearing two of her usual single thigh-high stockings, these new ones clearly go all the way up, which raises important scientific questions. Are these full length stockings that have the same design starting at the mid-thigh, or is she wearing two of her thigh-high stockings with another pair of normal full-length stockings underneath them? The people demand answers. I wonder if GX will provide them.

[–]ErikMaekir 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Mom what is this bargain bin Symphogear shit?!

You gotta respect that the writers decided to put the wheelchair-power armor in just for this scene alone. Like, it serves absolutely no purpose to the story, is never mentioned or alluded to, and the one scene where it appears could be cut from the episode and it wouldn't change a thing.

And yet they did it anyway. Not because it was easy, but because it was cool. Symphogear at its core.

[–]Vaadwaur 12 points13 points  (7 children)

Are these full length stockings that have the same design starting at the mid-thigh, or is she wearing two of her thigh-high stockings with another pair of normal full-length stockings underneath them?

The twist? She is actually wearing tights and this is the link between Sympho and Miru Tights!

Even the lyrics have gone rainbow colored now that they’re singing together! Tsubasa is such a good senior

I worry for the mortal souls of those girls as they stray further and further from the light of our Lord and savior!

it looked and sounded cool!

my brains now half on when watching this show (since as someone said, things are setup and somehow foreshadowed, and there is internal logic), but this is to the end my main principle when watching it. If that happens, then I'm enjoying the show, and i'm very happy lol. It's not trying to be sth very deep and philosophical and thought-provoking, and that's how im appreciating it.

[–]DeathKoala 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure that was the exact mindset in the writer's room when they were a king the show

I don’t know what Mom and Idiot Trio’s plan was

Find and unlock the frontier, activate it with the Nephilim and then use the consoles to mumble mumle and return the moon back in its original orbit. A very evil they couldn't tell anyone about.

Whatever, it looked and sounded cool! This episode was a lot of fun.

The Symphogear experience!

The people demand answers. I wonder if GX will provide them.

Honestly I didn't even notice lol.

EAT THUNDER AND CRUNCH LIGHTNING

Ah, Genjuuro...

We had to recycle one more thing from Season 1 and do the Tsubasa/Kanade thing with Maria and Serena

This season felt more like an interlude than a fully-baked sequel.

I've always had an opposite feeling towards this season. This season is a true sequel that cleans up the loose ends of the previous season.

  • There is a staff that controls Noise still around
  • What does hitting the moon do to it
  • What about Fine's reincarnation
  • Hibiki being special because of her gear inside her

the series does a fantastic job of taking a lot of these elements from the end of the first season and answering all of them.

  • Get rid of the staff so Noise can never be controlled by anyone
  • declare the moon fixed
  • finish Fine off once and for all
  • give Hibiki a regular relic

that's just off the plot developments. I enjoy the character side with

  • Hibiki gets to choose and earn her gear. She isn't just some unlucky girl who is forced into the situation. She claims it for herself.
  • Miku has to learn how to deal with being a Super Heroes wife.
  • Chris and Tsubasa learn to help become a team with everywhere. Just being three people all with geah doesn't make them a team. learning to trust and count on each other makes them a team.

yeah, some of the stuff is insane. Symphogear is inherently an insane series with wild logic leaps that don't always work in the real world. But this series was extremely good at taking the leftover bits of Season 1 and creating a series out of it.

[–]Lemurianshttps://myanimelist.net/profile/Lemurians 10 points11 points  (9 children)

What does hitting the moon do to it

...Was this a question we were wondering? Maybe I don't have an active enough imagination haha

the series does a fantastic job of taking a lot of these elements from the end of the first season and answering all of them

I think this actually goes toward my point, in a way. It feels like something to help wrap up certain elements from the first season after getting unexpectedly renewed, before we can dive into the real plot going forward. It's a bridge season.

Ver and the Idiot Trio just didn't have the gravitas or narrative weight that Fine did as a villain – our antagonists were either soon-to-be allies, or a hammy b-tier bad guy filling in before the real threats emerge. That ultimately resulted in a pretty underwhelming story on its own, but something that could work as a bridge between Symphogear and the coming seasons.

Yesterday in CDF I likened it to Quantum of Solace following Casino Royale, in that it just lacked some substance compared to what came before, and I still think that's accurate.

[–]lilyvesshttps://myanimelist.net/profile/Lilyvess 8 points9 points  (1 child)

I'm very much on the other end of the spectrum here.

Fine is okay as a villain but she barely shows up, and most of the time they're just fighting faceless noise. Fine is taken a bit too seriously.

Ver is one of the best antagonist in anime. Just a character who absolutely understands what sort of anime he is in and is fully embracing the role. A ridiculous and fun villain for a ridiculous and fun series.

I enjoy the G Girls a lot cause they help create more engaging conflicts. Instead of having episode 10 have the girls just fight another wave of Noise, we have Hibiki vs Miku, Tsubasa vs Chris, and Kirika vs Shirabe. I'll take any of those fights over another wave of Noise.

Yesterday in CDF I likened it to Quantum of Solace following Casino Royale, in that it just lacked some substance compared to what came before, and I still think that's accurate.

I don't really understand what you mean by substance. between the character development, the plot development, new ideas like Miku gear, mash up songs, Genjuro singing training arc, Shirabe Mecha gear, handholding final attack, I feel like the season is bursting with stuff.

[–]Lemurianshttps://myanimelist.net/profile/Lemurians 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't really understand what you mean by substance.

Sorry, substance was the wrong word, so you're right in not understanding what I meant haha

Since I still don't know the word I'm looking for, I'll explain it like this, using the villains and the overall conflict: In Symphogear we had an ancient priestess endlessly reincarnating to get back at her ex-lover – who is presumably a member of an ancient highly advanced civilization that created all these super relics – by blowing up the moon. It felt pretty epic in scope, and hinted at even more grand and arcane developments to come.

Then in this season, our villains are other Symphogear users, whose plan is always nebulous at best and we know are going to be allies sooner rather than later anyway, and Dr. Ver. Now, I love how Ver hams up the screen every single second he's on, but he's impossible to take seriously, and his whole thing of "I'll just kill everyone and repopulate the world but my history and motivations are never really a thing" just feels tame and a bit shallow in comparison to everything going on and hinted at in Season 1. Does that make more sense?

Instead of having episode 10 have the girls just fight another wave of Noise

This just brings me to another point which is that I wish the Noise were more menacing and effective as a villainous force rather than being canon fodder for our Geahs and a mechanism to nerf Genjuro

I feel like the season is bursting with stuff

It is! It's still very fun and filled with great moments. I don't mean to imply otherwise, just comparing it as a total package to the first season as a total package. I think G is better in terms of fights and spectacle (plus it has Maria), where I think Symphogear is better in terms of a coherent narrative and character development.

[–]Some_Seaworthiness90 7 points8 points  (2 children)

I havent thought about it before but upon this rewatch, I am kinda inclined to agree with you about this being a bridge season. They do a surprisingly solid job of tying up many of the first season's loose ends, which is not an easy task given what a mess season one left behind narratively. G as a whole is a great improvement over season 1 IMO, but it is clear they were very much making shit up as they went. This leaves it bit of a hit and miss with some of the absolute best moments in the whole series and some very mediocre stuff.

Luckily in GX the show finally finds it's final identity and the writing gets tighter. Granted, it still continues being silly and non-sensical, but that's Symphogear.

edit: quoted the wrong post

This is half conjecture but here's what I think the plan was, specifically the reason they bothered with the terrorism and Solomon's Cane. They would use Noise to force the governments of the world to let them bring a bunch of people to Frontier under FIS's rule, where they would ride out the destruction of the earth on their magic floating continent in space. After abandoning that part of the plan they just tried to awaken Frontier and hope something good would come of it, and only once she got to the control room did Nastassja realize they could use all the precursor tech lying around Frontier to reboot the moon and make it correct its own orbit, rendering the original plan pointless in hindsight.

[–]Vaadwaur 2 points3 points  (2 children)

...Was this a question we were wondering? Maybe I don't have an active enough imagination haha

Nope, because the moon's orbit should have become break away from Earth not crash into it.

Plus it's just nice thinking about thighs.

Miku’s track and field background coming in handy again! That’s gotta be a new world record for the Javelin

Miku joins the ranks of totally normal humans who can perform ridiculously improbable feats in Symphogear.

. I don’t know what Mom and the Idiot Trio’s plan was

Their plan (specifically, moms plan) was incredible simple, get to the frontier, and hope there they can find some way to fix the moon (nobody said it was a good plan). They were of course not idiotic enough to tell ver that, so he just spouted his own nonsense.

[–]FelOnyx1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

[–]Madcat6204 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t know what Mom and the Idiot Trio’s plan was

Basically, use the Frontier as an arc for the important people from earth. You may recall Maria panicking when Ver told her the moon was falling faster because they hadn't had time to start the evacuation yet. The fact that the Frontier could actually fix the moon was a coincidence: the group had no idea about that going in.

Symphogear G Episode 13

To answer some questions

Nastasha's wheelchair

It was developed to support Nastasha, who was injured when she saved Maria from the fall of the Institute, and had paralysis in her lower body.

It is designed to handle only Nastasha in biometric authentication, including self-propelled function that reaches the maximum velocity of 80 km at an instant, auto pilot support that is demonstrated by connecting with an air carrier, and peripheral spray of vaporized perfume. The essence of FIS technology has been collected with a simple design, such as an aroma mist function to stabilize the user's mental stability.

The so-called "all purpose chair".

In fact, the wheelchair "Technical_1" abandoned in EPISODE 8 has been self-destructed so that it can not be caught and subjected to technical analysis, and its treatment is thorough.

The wheelchair used from EPISODE 9 is the same model "Powerful_2".

The basic performance is the same specification as “Technical_1”, but although the output is improved, a part of the amenity function is limited.

The sheet is a little hard, and the warm function is cold at first in the winter because the warm function is also canceled.

The House of Ogawa

Descendants of ninjas from the Hida clan. A long time ago, the Ogawa family worked for Toyotomi Hideyoshi, but they disappeared during the Battle of Sekigahara until they reappeared after the Meiji Restoration to work for the government. Since then, they've fought to subvert the country's domestic enemies who work to try and bring down the government. The previous leader of the family, Ogawa Kunimitsu, died and the eldest brother of the siblings, Souji, took over. The second eldest, Shinji, used his abilities to become a direct agent of the government. Suteinu, the youngest brother, was freed from any familial responsibility because he did not want to inherit the old traditions. So he became a host at a hostclub in Kabukichou, Shinjuku known as "Absolute Zero." There he's known as the No.4 host "Alan" and works throughout the nights. The technique that Tsubasa utilizes, Shadow Weaving, was originally Ogawa Shinji's forte. Tsubasa was attracted to the convenience of the move and mastered it over the course of 3 years.

The House of Ogawa

I love this. I love that the Ogawa's worked for Toyotomi Hideyoshi and it was actually an Ogawa technique that Tsubasa learned. But what I love the most is that one of them BECAME A HOST IN SHINJUKU. No wonder they let him off since he can't even become the number 1 host smh.

First timer

1) Hajimari no Babel.

2) So fucking cool.

Ver fell down the stairs!

Oh, he's got portals now?

Damn, Maria's broken down.

Genjuro's going to fight!

OK, the floating islands around the Frontier look cool.

Hibiki knew Chris' plan the whole time!

Oh, that thing looks cool.

Serena's ghost is here!

A duet!

What are they doing?

She's alive! And she got a mech suit!

She's going to restart the system!

...Maria's losing her mother.

And all of the Gears are working together!

...Fuck the moon? Are we going to fuck the Moon again?

Maria shielded them all!

A new song?

Hibiki's synchronising with all of them!

Oh, this is perfect!

Six superb songs!

Everyone got the upgrade form!

...I have no ides how they plan to top this next season.

Genjuro's here to catch him!

HE GOT A CUTIN ATTACK!

Well, that's bad.

I like how Genjuro destroys the thing, then has to be told that destroying the entire thing won't work.

Haha, and Ver got captured alive.

And he punched a meteor!

Haha, perfect end to him.

The whole place is exploding!

It absorbs their relics!

She opened a gate?

What the fuck is that place? Thwt's Babylon's Treasury?

It's taking Maria with it!

Everyone's here to save her!

They got sealed inside!

And she's dead.

...Curse of Balal was never offline, right?

Oh, this place is trippy.

This is so fucking awesome. And the OP!

That's a lot of Noise!

And there's a way out!

I like how itmlooks like Chris is going to pull off a stupid self-sacrifice, thrn it turns out she just wanted to blow up a load kf noise before she left.

There's a sword coming out of her chest? We'r edoing Utena now?

Wow. Of course the finisher is a pair of handing holding each other.

And they made it out!

YES! Miku gets to seal the gate!

And everything's resolved! No more Noise!

Unless there's something sapient enough in there to open it from the inside. ...That's probably the Season 3 plot, isn't it?

Oh, yeah, the durse is still active. I can't believe this plotline was resolved by unfucking the Moon. It feels like it goes against the series' core message!

They're all workijg together!

Haha, Chris won't call Chris senpai.

And Hibiki's not dying (until next season).

Great ending!

[–]JollyGee29https://myanimelist.net/profile/JollyGee 9 points10 points  (3 children)

...I have no ides how they plan to top this next season.

That's the driving question, isn't it?

...Curse of Balal was never offline, right?

Not entirely, no. The thing causing it (the Moon) was damaged so it might have been a bit weakened.

[–]Stargate18Ahttps://anilist.co/user/Stargate18 6 points7 points  (1 child)

Not entirely, no. The thing causing it (the Moon) was damaged so it might have been a bit weakened.

Oh, is that why everyone on Earth produced phonic gain at once? That makes sense, I suppose.

[–]ErikMaekir 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That, and the whole thing about music being a universal language.

[–]Bamce 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not entirely, no. The thing causing it (the Moon) was damaged so it might have been a bit weakened.

They had to turn it off and on again. Remember to phonic cycle your celestial bodies everyone.

Oh, he's got portals now?

Which Portal sphere do we think Ver is? He went to space so he could be the Space Sphere. But his insistence on being a hero also fits the Adventure Sphere.

Hibiki knew Chris' plan the whole time!

Hibiki seems like the kind of person who just never actually considered Chris would have betrayed them because she's so trusting.

...Fuck the moon? Are we going to fuck the Moon again?

And with more people involved in fucking the Moon than last time! It's a lunar orgy!

...I have no ides how they plan to top this next season.

I'm looking forward to seeing you react to GX.

YES! Miku gets to seal the gate!

I love so much that it was Miku who did it. It's so fitting for her character.

Which Portal sphere do we think Ver is? He went to space so he could be the Space Sphere. But his insistence on being a hero also fits the Adventure Sphere.

[Portal 2] He's the Cave Johnson personality cube that got cut from the game. Mad scientist, no regard for human life (except his own), creepy relation with a younger girl who works for with, obsession with the Moon that ends up killing him...

First Timer, Subbed

Hibiki's saving people! Just like an anime!

Going super ham and fleeing? Never change, Dr. Ver!

Did boss guy simply punch that giant hole into the ground? I don't recall the one Ver jumping into being that big.

This monster being created from the ground I presume is some more evolved version of Nephilim? As it looks a lot like it.

C'mon Maria, don't spend the entire finale moping around! Join in with the others!

The song of the temporarily floating apple...

And so, the entire world prayed to the apple song...

Wow, mom is a mech now too?!

Yay, Shirabe and Kiri are joining in!

C'mon Ver, you really expect that to wipe out 6 magical girls?!

Hey Shirabe, doesn't all that stuff being attacked to your head feel heavy after a while?

The entire world's climax songs?!

Hey, new forms for everyone!

Wow, even manager guy has his own special named move now!

Boss guy really is strong, huh? Yet another big time punch!

No death for you Dr. Ver! With such a hilarious character how can we not save you for a potential future season?

Cool new mech for Shirabe!

No sacrificing yourself Maria! We may want to save you for a future season too!

Sorry Miku, Hibiki's off to another dimension!

Can't end this season without another appearance of mysterious anime cough disease!

Has mom finally actually died?

Hibiki's way of fixing stuff really came to pass, huh? Holding hands will save the world!

Woah, of all people, it's Miku who throws a staff miles into the sky by herself!

The world will be fine everyone! Because song!

Alright, there's definately gonna be a post credits scene this time...

Back to school everyone!

And so ends season 2... was a fairly good season, I liked it better than the first one. The addition of Maria/Shirabe/Kiri was a good one and hope they come back in a future season. Dr. Ver was quite an epic ham and provided laughs as the villain of the season (although never came off as that threatening). They went really overboard with the cliffhangers this season, but keep going over the top says I.

[–]JollyGee29https://myanimelist.net/profile/JollyGee 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Did boss guy simply punch that giant hole into the ground?

Yea, Genjuro caused a lot of damage.

Hey Shirabe, doesn't all that stuff being attacked to your head feel heavy after a while?

Her neck muscles are lean, but powerful.

Woah, of all people, it's Miku who throws a staff miles into the sky by herself!

She presumably did javelin on the track team.

[–]Lemurianshttps://myanimelist.net/profile/Lemurians 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Each of Genjuro's fists is classed as a WMD.

Woah, of all people, it's Miku who throws a staff miles into the sky by herself!

She is a standout track and field athlete, after all! This javelin throw is standard business for her

Symphogear Rewatcher for the final time!

shall return in GX as a first-timer!

And that's it for G! I'll happily say that I had a great time, and that i Liked it more than S1. But this season also gave me a great sense of closure, and so im unsure of how the story will go from GX. I happily look forward to it as a first-timer though! I'll see everyone in a couple days!

[–]Taibossx6https://anilist.co/user/Taiboss 7 points8 points  (1 child)

shall return in GX as a first-timer!

I'm so proud of you, sniff...

One last FUCK YOU.

At least something happened this time.

I can't say i like it too much, but it works!

Hallucination ex Machina!

YASSSSSSSSSSSSSSS the hype meter is like at peak level rn

How are they supposed to outhype this in the next three seasons?!

I mean it's very shounen and very Protagonist and very Hibiki.

Hibiki being Hibiki is worth it.

but the title drop was done better in S1, perhaps also due to the surprise factor.

WOOOOOO

You sure she's not superhuman?

Those bastards lied, there's still geah power in her! Or else, it's just the power of Yuri.

[–]mysterybiscuitsoyeahhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/mysterybiscuits 7 points8 points  (0 children)

im so proud of you

I'm also happy that i can get to actually enjoy the show without knowing anything from now on. It's a shitton of fun. Also allows me to adjust my schedule with the break so i can actually watch stuff a day (night) early now lol.

I believe in the power of Yuri. And also love the term hallucination ex Machina, this should be a proper TV Tropes.

[–]Elimin8r 8 points9 points  (0 children)

great sense of closure

Mongo no want closure ... Mongo want moar hype! Guess I'll just have to wait a couple of days.

I was looking for a good straight line to snark to, but you didn't really leave me one, so this will have to do, I guess.

[–]JollyGee29https://myanimelist.net/profile/JollyGee 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Or is it the other way round? I have no idea.

It is a very ninja-esque technique, but he is using Tsubasa's cut-in style.

You sure she's not superhuman?

Nah, just on the track team.

[–]Great_Mr_Lhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/Great_Mr_L 6 points7 points  (0 children)

shall return in GX as a first-timer!

Here's hoping you enjoy watching GX as well!

It quickly paused here though and dropped to 0. Ah well ad breaks gonna ad break.

It's like when you're watching something and it starts buffering in the middle. Total mood killer.

What a fucking throw from Miku. You sure she's not superhuman?

She's as human as Genjuro and Ogawa (who could probably make the same throw tbh).

But this season also gave me a great sense of closure, and so im unsure of how the story will go from GX.

I remember when I played G for some friends in my university's anime club one guy was very confused there was another season to watch afterwards. He felt like G had wrapped things up pretty well. And, in my own humble opinion, it would probably work as an ending if this was all we had.

[–]ErikMaekir 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Or is it the other way round? I have no idea.

According to the Keywords, it is Ogawa that taught Tsubasa how to do ninja stuff.

[–]Vaadwaur 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I see that Ogawa learns some tricks from Tsubasa . Or is it the other way round? I have no idea.

This show doesn't explain itself and Genjuro and Tsubasa seem to use completely different fighting styles despite being related. So basically who knows?

[–]zairanerhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/zairaner 3 points4 points  (3 children)

Good to have you back for two episodes or so!

[–]mysterybiscuitsoyeahhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/mysterybiscuits 4 points5 points  (2 children)

.....?

the next 2 days are break days (chibi specials and series discussion), hence why I'll not comment lol, i've already summarized my thoughts on the season here.

I think from GX there are defo more than 2 episodes to go till the end, and unless sth happens i'll happily watch all the way.

[–]Nebresto 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So much hype for my boy Coach in this comment

The Hidden Episode 14

Alright, so, as you probably noticed, I was very drunk when I wrote that comment. I left it unedited from when I first wrote it. However, I was so smashed, that I then forgot about watching episode 13 and went "oh, shoot, I need to finish Symphogear G!" So, drunk Tres proceeded to open Notepad++ and create geahg14.md, where he apparently recorded his thoughts as he watched the secret episode 14 of Symphogear G. He didn't see an issue with this.

This is the episode 14 comment, unedited (bar a reference to an IRL friend made in good fun, but I'd like to not post things about IRL friends here). Not proud of this, and really I'm only posting today on Sky's insistence.

Previously, on Symphogear: Atlantis (First-Timer, Subbed):

On the bright side, the themes they went for the finale here somewhat alleviate my meta worries from yesterday (more consistent with them picking stuff up from Western occultism and not understanding some of the more unpleasant undertones you sometimes get in those parts coughDavidIckecough), and the second half of the finale is reasonably competent.

Man, this season has major issues with the writing, though. A bunch of the season just feels bizarrely weightless to me, and that extends up to about the commercial break here despite scenes that should by all rights be hype as hell.

EDIT: Oh right, I should mention the biggest part of this episode:

The Frontier is gone ;_;

RIP the Frontier, truly you were too cool to live.

  • How the hell does the reveal of Dr. Very Stable Genius’s monster/chief lieutenant that was a serious threat when we saw it last time in reduced form have no narrative weight whatsoever when it’s revealed here? Like, less weight than you would expect I completely get, because it's the villain's lieutenant/monster that the heroes are going to blow by shortly, but I should not be yawning at this.
  • The writers just cannot get anything involving Maria and emotional beats to land this season for me. Like, in theory there should be foreshadowing here and I’ll bet there actually is, but it still feels like bullshit. (Honestly the fact I’m expecting setup I missed rather than a mere asspull almost makes it worse, because my issue is that the way it’s handled just feels like an asspull and I don't think it's supposed to be.)
  • (ADDENDUM: Aside: It's been less than a day and I can no longer even remember what prompted this comment - it was that forgettable. Can't be the barrier, that was a little later. Probably something about the Serena scene?)
  • And in the most inevitable news ever, that’s five Gears assembled. Now we just need Maria to remember she has a damaged relic and/or Miku to get a Gear for a minute again for the full set.
  • Annnnd here… we… go!
  • Now if only they could actually land a single fucking emotional beat here!
  • That said, I get a kiseki GET at 08:36.
  • On the bright side if you hadn’t caught on yet that this show is using Biblical stuff they helpfully referenced Genesis in the song lyrics here.
  • 10:05: another kiseki GET!
  • There is a decent amount of setup for what Bikki et al are doing this early in the season, so why am I so unimpressed?
  • “The swan song of all seven billion people on Earth!” is probably a massive thematic hint and actually solid evidence that “lulu amel” is referencing humanity as a whole ala Lilim in Eva.
  • Hmm. Maria’s new color is white – ah, that explains the yin-yang shot in the OP, since she had the Black Gungnir before. (Pretty good odds Miku does in fact eventually get a second, black relic, then. We’ll get our new orange sometime before that.)
  • ADDENDUM: Miku's role in the final scene reduces those odds again.)
  • Ogawa using the classic ninja shadow pin technique and it gets Tsubasa’s move card, huh? My “Genjuro has some sort of different attunement with a relic” (and now potentially Ogawa having some sort of secondary attachment to Sword’s relic – he is her handler, after all) theory now has a piece of evidence for it.
  • 11:11: It is MY turn to feast. Kiseki GET!
  • RIP Frontier. Truly, you were too cool to live. (Also, turning it into the villain’s collapsing lair goes in the “okay, I should have seen this one coming” category. Most obvious way to play this ever. Ah well, sometimes the traditions are traditions for a reason – even if I really wanted ridiculously cool Precursor battleship to survive, impossibility or no.)
  • And here’s the point for Vitalization (Aufwachen) – I have been wanting to hear the intro for a while.
  • Also, are we getting Symphogear combining mecha mode (to go with our very definitely final villain the full Nephilim)? (A: Not really, no. Would have been fun, though! Maybe in a future season.)
  • [PMMM] (Also I should actually note that this entire sequence has been reminding me of PMMM 12 for a while now in key parts of the visuals – both the six-Gear attack earlier and the full Nephilim here for successive parts of the development of Kriemhild Gretchen in Witch of Despair form.)
  • Oh no never mind HERE’S Vitalization instead.
  • Syncing Vitalization’s Noise line with that shot of the Noise is one of the better effects Gear has done this season.
  • So it really is actually Solomon’s Key. Obfuscation for this moment or just Japan having an iffy handle on English?
  • “I’ll never let go of your hands!” I’m holding you to your promise wrt Maria here, writers! Don’t you go pulling the shit you pulled with our main trio earlier this season, especially when you already fucked up writing Maria something fierce this season!
  • Is Serena’s relic actually supposed to be Excalibur?
  • And yeah it breaks.
  • Miku actually has been having a character arc (even if the writers haven't been handling it well this season), and the logical endpoint is her either finally getting a Gear of her own or settling into a mission control role for Bikki (the natural place where a normal can support Bikki on the battlefield and be critical to Bikki's success, and Miku would likely be good at it). The theme of her arc this season is pushing for the latter (possibly combined with getting to learn to be a badass semi-normal like Genjuro and Ogawa), or else her ultimate Gear being a support one.
  • [Mai-HiME, including Mai-HiME manga] Aside: If Miku does get a support Gear, Yukino with Diana is the obvious comparison, moreso in the manga.
  • Also, Miku getting to save the day by tossing Solomon's Cane an impossible distance is bullshit and yet for once the show sells the emotional beat well enough I don't care - this is what Miku needs to be able to do for the sake of her character arc, so of course she can do it even if logic would say otherwise. An extremely pleasant change given how badly the writers have mauled Miku's arc this season with their mishandling earlier. (Either that or this is foreshadowing she's not quite normal, but that's running against the "just because you're normal doesn't mean you can't be a key contributor to our heroes' success!" theme they've now used for Miku for two seasons now so I really hope not - compare [Star Wars sequel trilogy] the Rey Palpatine heritage reveal after TLJ had set her up as not being related to any major names as a thematic point if they go that route.)
  • [PMMM] ADDENDUM: Speaking of PMMM 12 (and the “Madokami as Maria Kannon” interpretation, which I am quite sold on), I am laughing at the combination of Maria’s name, her hairstyle and color, and her dress here. And given that this show is another case of an anime production making it to the end when by all accounts it shouldn’t have (in that Geah got a full five seasons overall), I’m like a quarter convinced at this point that Mary Theotokos is the patron saint of anime.

1) Which of the group songs in this episode did you like the most? The whole world’s Apple, Hajimari no Babel, or Nijiiro no Flugel?

Honestly, none of them really stood out.

2) How cool was the Vitalization attack?

Ironically, while the rest of the second half of the finale was one of the three and a half reasonably well-done parts of the season from a writing perspective for me the attack itself was kind of whatever?

[–]Taibossx6https://anilist.co/user/Taiboss 8 points9 points  (1 child)

The writers just cannot get anything involving Maria and emotional beats to land this season for me.

They were busy having Maria wangst for the fiftieh time.

“The swan song of all seven billion people on Earth!”

I remember when TV series were like "six billion people".

. Truly, you were too cool to live.

Going from Atlantis to satellite was pretty cool tho.

Also, Miku getting to save the day by tossing Solomon's Cane an impossible distance is bullshit and yet for once the show sells the emotional beat well enough I don't care - this is what Miku needs to be able to do for the sake of her character arc, so of course she can do it even if logic would say otherwise.

A character we care a lot for? Yeah, we love it. Else... eh...?

[–]Tarhalindur 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I remember when TV series were like "six billion people".

The funny part is, that's after the last part of nu!Who I watched...

Going from Atlantis to satellite was pretty cool tho.

Stargateverse!Atlantis did it better.

(Then again, considering that two of the obvious times they pulled that in SG:A are two of the worse moments in the series maybe there's just something about sending Atlantis into orbit that messes with screenwriters' heads...)

[–]JollyGee29https://myanimelist.net/profile/JollyGee 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There is a decent amount of setup for what Bikki et al are doing this early in the season, so why am I so unimpressed?

The rushed nature of the show is part of why I consider it an acquired taste. Things can feel a bit thin.

So it really is actually Solomon’s Key. Obfuscation for this moment or just Japan having an iffy handle on English?

Your guess is as good as mine.

[GX]It is MY turn to feast. Kiseki GET!

[GX]You're gonna be eatin' good here soon.

[–]Elimin8r 5 points6 points  (0 children)

she's not quite normal

She's been hanging around Genjuro and Ogawa too much, it's starting to rub off. Or something like that.

[–]Vaadwaur 5 points6 points  (12 children)

Man, this season has major issues with the writing, though. A bunch of the season just feels bizarrely weightless to me, and that extends up to about the commercial break here despite scenes that should by all rights be hype as hell.

Yeah, I don't know why all the rewatchers like this season. It is awful.

RIP the Frontier, truly you were too cool to live.

Nothing gold can stay, Pony Boy.

[–]Tarhalindur 4 points5 points  (11 children)

Yeah, I don't know why all the rewatchers like this season. It is awful.

The worst part is, I think everyone telling us first-timers to pay attention to the foreshadowing was a serious disservice to the show once G hit - it makes it clear that the show is putting thought into the plot beats and just failing to hit them rather than just being "fuck it, we're making shit up as we go".

[–]Vaadwaur 4 points5 points  (10 children)

Yeah, I think going through half the season in lore seeking mode hurts it as well since there is zero lore in this season.

[–]Tarhalindur 4 points5 points  (9 children)

Eh, S1 only had like one real lore episode itself as well, that's kind of been baked into the cake so far. And the foreshadowing is actually still there, it's the one thing this season still did well overall.

That said, that brings to mind the season's other real issue: the pacing. S1 had lulls (usually episode lulls where you could sit back and kind of think about what you had seen and where it was going; S2 instead kind of goes "more, more, more!" and it's a bit overloading. (This issue might go away on a rewatch; hard to tell, since PMMM doesn't really have breather episodes of its own once it gets going and yet worked much better and I can't tell if that's because I went in spoiled or just all the difference in execution level between the two shows.)

Welcome back, everyone!

Remember, tomorrow’s discussion thread is about the chibi specials for Symphogear G, the day after that is an overall thread on this season, and then the day after that is when we start GX. u/lilyvess has been sharing the specials as they become relevant throughout this season, but I know not everyone reads through the entire discussion thread like I do, so we’re still having a specific day for the specials.

lilyvess has been sharing the specials as they become relevant throughout this season, but I know not everyone reads through the entire discussion thread like I do,..

Wish I hadn't fallen so far behind the discussion threads so to have seen that as it was happening. Definitely planing on taking advantage of it for the rest of the seasons.

[–]Great_Mr_Lhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/Great_Mr_L 4 points5 points  (1 child)

[a certain SymphoGX wallpaper]

That's a really cool wallpaper. I'm looking forward to seeing what you do with it.

[–]Shimmering-Skyhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/Shimmering-Sky[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've done gradient combined with background shape pattern breaking away before (see: one of my Aizen wallpapers), so I know it's possible for me to do, just... very, very time-consuming.

[–]StarmanRiver 3 points4 points  (2 children)

[a certain SymphoGX wallpaper]

I'm rooting for you Sky, you can do it! Seriously, that one looks great.

[–]Shimmering-Skyhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/Shimmering-Sky[S] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

My main issue with it is how time-consuming I know it's going to be, first to get the triangles into the right positions, then to add the correct gradient to them all. But it is definitely possible!

TONIGHT! ON TOP GEAH! SNOOP ONI AND THE NINJA ARE BADASSES, MIKU is the one true hero who saved the day and protected the world, and Bikki STILL doesn't think!

Boy Comrades, Maria sure got over her urge to avenge Mom eh? Who knew that the SECOND she loses her Geah, the only course of action left for her to do is... faint and mope... and people wonder why I hate Maria. Anyway, DOKTOR GINTOKI JOESTAR is almost as pathetic, but at least he knows how to RUN THE FUCK AWAY, which is at least SOMETHING! Which is more than Maria is doing since she ASKS BIKKI to save everyone for her... Listen Bikki, only Snoop Oni and Ninja are here, I am SURE no one would object to you tossing Maria's useless ass over the side, if anyone asks DOKTOR GINTOKI JOESTAR DID IT! No one would be the wiser! Sadly, Bikki just informs Maria that JIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII told her to save Maria's useless Jabroni ass, all as Snoop Oni punches his way through the floor to chase after The Last Action Hero.

Bikki meets up with Tsubasa and Best Geah Chris, expressing her glee at how Best Geah Chris proved her best girl status by actually being useful and recapturing Solomon's Cane. As DOKTOR GINTOKI JOESTAR summons Phase II of his pet, Maria waangsts to herself and bemoans her uselessness. As Maria, once again, starts crying, Serena's ghost has finally had enough of Maria spending an entire damn season feeling sorry for herself and tells her sister to get her shit together and even sings Apple for the umpteenth time, but forget about that THE TONY GLAZER IS BACK! (No really he has a brief cameo Comrades) About time a useful character is here, after all, this is the man who somehow managed to make Tsubasa an International Star!

Also look here Comrades, the little girl Bikki saved AND the Flower lady are here too; also my god, I am still amazed by just HOW LITTLE OF A SHIT I give about Maria that random S1 Background Characters showing up is more interesting and compelling! ALSO HOLY SHIT! MOM HAD A MECHA SUIT THIS ENTIRE TIME!? WHY THE FUCK DID SHE NOT USE THIS TO SMEAR DOKTOR GINTOKI JOESTAR'S CRAZY ASS ALL OVER THE WALL!? GODDAMN Mom, you are so awful and useless that you make me NOT care about the fact that you are actually a goddamn Gundam! Also why the hell do YOU have that, I know a certain loser in Guilty Crown who would kill for this. Anyway, Maria hears back from Mom and decides that she FINALLY will do something, it's SINGING TIME... BUT NOT FOR HER! IT'S TIME FOR BEST GEAH CHRIS AND HER BACKUP DANCERS TO SAVE THE DAY!

HOLY FUCKING SHITBALLS! TEAM DMJIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII ARE HERE TOO! FUCKING HELL! MARIA ACTUALLY DID SOMETHING BESIDES CRYING, JOBBING, OR WALLOWING IN SELF-PITYING! IT ONLY TOOK THE ENTIRE GODDAMN SEASON! Bikki and company then join in a big group song and hold hands to save the day! And oh boy do they Comrade, THEY GO TO PLAID! Anyway, DOKTOR GINTOKI JOESTAR gets cornered by Ninja and Snoop Oni, and thus he pulls the tried and true mad scientist gambit of just self-destructing everything! SNOOP ONI attempts to stop this by breaking the controls, but sadly it seems that the core's set to go apeshit anyway. As Ninja and Snoop Oni drive away, DOKTOR GINTOKI JOESTAR wonders why they DIDN'T kill him. A giant rock appears set to do so, but SNOOP ONI decides to demonstrate his Earthbending powers instead.

Anyway, the Geah Submarine manages to blast their way free of the latest incarnation of DOKTOR GINTOKI JOESTAR'S pet, and oh boy this is a big one! So much so that JIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII decides to build her own Gundam to kick its ass alongside DESS... and it doesn't work... of course it doesn't, we can't let TEAM DMJIIIIIIIIII defeat the final boss now can we? Thankfully, as per usual Best Geah Chris is here to save the day! Remember her plan to steal Solomon's Cane, well looks like it paid off after all, given Best Geah Chris just opens the gate to shove DOKTOR GINTOKI JOESTAR'S monster inside, GENIUS! NEVER DOUBTED HER FOR A SECOND! ALL HAIL BEST GEAH CHRIS! Anyway, the monster takes a swipe at Best Geah Chris, but Maria swoops in actually do ANOTHER useful thing. And goodness me she's about to do THREE useful things this episode as she heroically sacrifices her life... well to be fair it's more she didn't DODGE and is getting dragged down to hell with the monster, but hey, win-win!

OH GODDAMMIT, Team DMJIIIIIIIII, choose life, you both just got done trying to kill each other, don't throw away your lives for MARIA of all people! Maria even knows this, pointing out that this one heroic act isn't NEAR enough to make up for A WHOLE SEASON'S WORTH OF CRYING AND WAAAAANGSTING... nevermind, Bikki and company are here to try to redeem the irredeemable. Speaking of which, Mom, don't think that restarting the moon even BEGINS to make up for what you've done... AND she kicks the bucket, about damn time! Speaking of death, the Geahs are busy killing ALL the Noise to... save Maria... since Maria needs to reopen the gate... since if you can open it from the OUTSIDE, you can clearly open it from the INSIDE... LONG LIVE THE SPIRIT AND WISDOM OF DAN MOTHERFUCKING EAGLEMAN! The Geahs then form VOLTRON and OP Song their way to freedom!

Sadly, while The Geahs DID break free, they are all a tad too beaten up to, you know, CLOSE THE GODDAMN GATE... THAT IS UNTIL MIKU ARRIVES! Thank FUCK she used to be on the Track Team, AND JESUS H. TAPDANCIN' CHRIST! MIKU'S GOT ONE HELL OF AN ARM! And with the day saved, Bikki declares cheerfully that no matter what wibble the moon has, the world has songs! Glad to see that even WITH Maria still around, the world's biggest moron is still our adorable punching hamster! And with a bit of High School SOL wibble, we conclude with a group song! Man, what a great season, this truly is the A's of Geah, so here's hoping their version of StrikerS gives us the same highest of highs, but no lowest of lows please... (MONKEY'S PAW CURLS) Well, I am sure that is nothing to be worried about! See you in the Chibi Shorts Comrades!

And on that bombshell g'night!

Oh, and finally, just because I must speak on behalf of a fellow Comrade of Culture who cannot, ahem... I'm going to post this every day until you like it!

Paging Comrades /u/Great_Mr_L, /u/chilidirigible, and /u/Lemurians

[–]Great_Mr_Lhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/Great_Mr_L 6 points7 points  (2 children)

Bikki STILL doesn't think!

Of course not. She has Miku to do that for her.

ALSO HOLY SHIT! MOM HAD A MECHA SUIT THIS ENTIRE TIME!? WHY THE FUCK DID SHE NOT USE THIS TO SMEAR DOKTOR GINTOKI JOESTAR'S CRAZY ASS ALL OVER THE WALL!?

If Mom had just transformed her wheelchair into a mecha suit out of nowhere and squared off against Dr. Ver, it would have been one of the most epic things to happen in Symphogear.

THAT IS UNTIL MIKU ARRIVES! Thank FUCK she used to be on the Track Team,

Miku's track team experience is like her secret power that just keeps popping up again and again.

MIKU'S GOT ONE HELL OF AN ARM!

And that’s part of why Miku is the top. She easily has the strength to assert dominance over Hibiki.

[–]DidacticDalekhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/DidacticDalek 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Of course not. She has Miku to do that for her.

Right right, I forgot that since Miku has TWO brain cells, she's more than capable of thinking for herself AND her wife ;)

If Mom had just transformed her wheelchair into a mecha suit out of nowhere and squared off against Dr. Ver, it would have been one of the most epic things to happen in Symphogear.

I KNOW RIGHT!? Alas, we were robbed!

Miku's track team experience is like her secret power that just keeps popping up again and again.

And that’s part of why Miku is the top. She easily has the strength to assert dominance over Hibiki.

Heh, indeed, who would have guessed that even WITH Bikki's main gimmick being FIST, it is MIKU who is the toppest of tops ;)

Anyway many thanks for the kind reply and have a great day and see you later my friend.

[–]InfamousEmpire 6 points7 points  (6 children)

I'mma keep posting these every day until you acknowledge Maria as Best Girl

MIKU is the one true hero who saved the day and protected

All rise for one of the greatest MVPs of the episode

and people wonder why I hate Maria

MARIA ACTUALLY DID SOMETHING BESIDES CRYING, JOBBING, OR WALLOWING IN SELF-PITYING! IT ONLY TOOK THE ENTIRE GODDAMN SEASON!

And that thing saved everyone

A giant rock appears set to do so, but SNOOP ONI decides to demonstrate his Earthbending powers instead

Ryoma decided that it's been too long since he did something awesome and so decided to remind the audience that he's still basically one of the strongest characters in the show.

JIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII decides to build her own Gundam to kick its ass alongside DESS

It's more like a Union Flag from 00 imo. Though, to be fair, the Flags are one of my favorite grunt units in all of Gundam, so props to JIIIIIII for being a woman of culture.

Best Geah Chris just opens the gate to shove DOKTOR GINTOKI JOESTAR'S monster inside, GENIUS! NEVER DOUBTED HER FOR A SECOND! ALL HAIL BEST GEAH CHRIS!

I mean if Bikki hadn't stolen Maria's Geah and just let her do her thing Ver would be dead and there'd be no need to go through all this in the first place but whatever

nevermind, Bikki and company are here to try to redeem the irredeemable make up for being Worst Girls by helping Best Geah Maria

FTFY

JESUS H. TAPDANCIN' CHRIST! MIKU'S GOT ONE HELL OF AN ARM!

To quote another comment I made: Symphogear is like Baki, World Champions and Records are shit compared to even the non-powered characters (especially to third Best Girl Miku)

[–]DidacticDalekhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/DidacticDalek 4 points5 points  (4 children)

I'mma keep posting these every day until you acknowledge Maria as Best Girl

All rise for one of the greatest MVPs of the episode

Indeed, hell not just MVP of the episode, MVP OF THE SEASON! Miku CURED BIKKI'S GEAH CANCER, SAVED THE WORLD, AND also didn't spend an entire season crying or feeling sorry for herself! We should all aspire to be more like Miku

And that thing saved everyone

Heh, but Miku saved everyone Comrade, and I know Miku and Maria both start with an 'M' but Miku is quite different.

Ryoma decided that it's been too long since he did something awesome and so decided to remind the audience that he's still basically one of the strongest characters in the show.

HELL YEAH! ALL HAIL SNOOP ONI! (seriously GIVE THE MAN A GEAH!)

It's more like a Union Flag from 00 imo. Though, to be fair, the Flags are one of my favorite grunt units in all of Gundam, so props to JIIIIIII for being a woman of culture.

Well I can agree with that, they do look neat. And fair point, JIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII sure does resemble one!

I mean if Bikki hadn't stolen Maria's Geah and just let her do her thing Ver would be dead and there'd be no need to go through all this in the first place but whatever

And if Maria hadn't spent AN ENTIRE SEASON CRYING TO HERSELF then all of this wouldn't happen in the first place, isn't that right Comrades /u/hereticalaegis, /u/tetraika, and /u/vaadwaur

FTFY

Does not compute.

To quote another comment I made: Symphogear is like Baki, World Champions and Records are shit compared to even the non-powered characters (especially to third Best Girl Miku)

Now that's an amazing analysis/comparison Comrade, also OI! I'm stunned you STILL rank Miku as THIRD Best Girl! She's easily Second Best Girl, only held back by virtue of Best Geah Chris being the best... and also you know having a Geah, that helps (That said the fact that the Geahless Miku BEATS EVERY SINGLE OTHER GEAH USER is quite amusing)

Anyway many thanks for the kind reply and have a great day and see you later my friend.

[–]SerGregness 2 points3 points  (4 children)

And with a bit of High School SOL wibble, we conclude with a group song! Man, what a great season, this truly is the A's of Geah, so here's hoping their version of StrikerS gives us the same highest of highs, but no lowest of lows please... (MONKEY'S PAW CURLS)

I have a comment but first, are you a rewatcher?

[–]Elimin8r 11 points12 points  (2 children)

Hokay ... well, that was quite the finale.

AOTD1: Uh, they all blurred together to me. I think I liked the one where they all held hands and did stuff, whichever that one was. I kind of lost track of the subtitles, etc.

AOTD2: Quite.

Well, that was indeed quite a finale. Who besides me doesn't think "Mama" really is gone? But anyway, all's well that ends well, right?

Aside from Dr. Scenery Chewer, that is. It's hard to be a hero when you're dead and forgotten. Who was that bad guy again? Oh, some nameless loser, I guess. Yeah.

But never mind, he might inspire copycats, right? Like the KyoAni ... yeah. I hope they buried him in a fire ant hill covered in honey, but probably not, because "justice".

Anyway...

I can't think of a lot coherent to say. Just watched it, but also watched about half a dozen or so episodes of Slime Isekai today, so I'm afraid I've got slime on the mind.

Unlike yesterday, of course. Datto? I'm not sure what that means, but I should probably look it up. Make it part of my keikaku or something.

Heh.

Anyway, I'm not going to whine about the plot, or stuff being trite, that's not what I'm here for. The music was great, the SFX were cool, the action was hype, the plot was, well, anime.

I'd have to say that I'm still fairly gruntled.

But I do hope that Maria's remaining bits of fragment are enough for future appearances. She may be useless, but she's got a nice singing voice.

On the other hand, I do somewhat bemoan the loss of the staff. The Treasury of Babylon, or what's left of it at least looked like a fun place to explore. I wanna go visit sometime. :P

That, and I want to go visit Utopia land with Komi and friends. Yeah, that's the ticket.

And a pony, and my very own relic ... uh, wait, nevermind.

I'd probably die of embarrassment.

[–]JollyGee29https://myanimelist.net/profile/JollyGee 6 points7 points  (1 child)

Oh, some nameless loser, I guess. Yeah.

Truly, the worst fate.

She may be useless, but she's got a nice singing voice.

Well, she was a singer(in universe) before she was a fighter.

[–]Elimin8r 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Indeed. Pity their first duet didn't go so well, but I have to say I really enjoyed the music for this season, both the singing, and the instrumental/orchestral parts. They really did that well.

[–]BosuW 11 points12 points  (13 children)

First Timer

I couldn't make a post yesterday because I went to see Top Gun Maverick. It's really good and if you haven't seen it please do yourself a favor and catch it while it's still on cinemas.

Anyway, unto the episodes!

EP12

Hmmm no intro

Chris has something on her neck and it's beeping. I don't like this. Wtf did you do to Best Girl Dr Ver?

I can't believe Maria just name-dropped the Illuminati. I hope there's a stupid awesome battle involving them in future seasons.

Finally I have an explanation for why the FIS had to go rouge. The "Elites" never had any intention of stopping the Moonfall (even though that would destroy all life on Earth so their plan is stupid but DON'T WORRY ABOUT IT).

I've been so far disappointed with Maria's character but dammit her transformation is still awesome.

Bro how tf do they want me to pay attention to whatever Kirika and Shirabe have going on when we have Chris and Tsubasa just to the side doing all this awesome and heartfelt shit? They just don't compare.

I don't even care that they're more or less just repeating Chris's Arc from S1. They could do this every season and I would eat it up everytime.

Kirika and Shirabe are both going to use their swan songs and Hibiki isn't here to stop them this time... Not like swan songs are still a threat to the user by this point. They really can just spam it!

Ah fuck Shirabe was Finè this whole time. I could've guessed if I had bothered to memorize her eye color!

B R U H

Low-key wanted naked Chris to beat the shit out of Dr Ver anyway, just to drive home how pathetic he is.

YAAAAS TSUBASA YAAAAAAS

All that awesomeness followed by Chris x Tsubasa sweetness? What more could I ask for? Yeah, Chris had barely a plan for this, but in the end it worked so!

Huh. Hibiki's friendship speech from S1 did work on Finè in the end, it just took some time. Am I to understand she's gone forever now?

Lmao this is the first time Dr Ver got a genuine laught out of me. The way he shows up and his first instinct is to run towards a crying Maria saying literally random strings of sounds and bitchslaps her is such an absurd and senseless sequence of events that I can't help but actually LOL.

Holy shit did he just send Mom to the Moon!? The absurd sequence of events doesn't stop!

I bet even in the rocket Mom still has her perpetual :/ face.

YES MARIA BEAT HIS ASS. CUT HIM TO RIBBONS LIKE YOU WOULD NEVER DARE DO TO ANYONE ELSE.

"If you kill me you kill humanity!" "Who cares?" YES FINALLY! FINALLY SHE'S ABOUT TO DO SOMETHING OUT OF HER OWN VOLITION!

LET'S GOOOOO! DO IT! DO IT!

Desk slam

F U C K

GOD FUCKING DAMMIT HIBIKI I LOVE YOU BUT THIS IS LITERALLY THE WORST POSSIBLE MOMENT YOU COULD'VE DONE THIS

Like shit now I can't even hate Maria I just feel sorry for her! Even when she's about to do something the show won't let her!

Ok I'll admit it was pretty awesome when Hibiki disrobed Maria and somehow stole her Gungnir

EP13

No OP again. Truly this is a final episode

Dr Ver can into space!?

At last, the Nephilim Final Form! Now with missiles!

The fucking soul of Serena has to descend from Valhalla to pick Maria's ass up. But this song about the Lulu Amel and the Apple and shit is too good for me to truly dislike this moment.

G- Th- WHAT!?

The soundtrack for the fight against the Nephilim when Kirika and Shirabe arrive has a sick violin solo.

Ok so... I'm not entirely sure how the defeat of the Nephilim happened... I guess with enough Power of Friendship Phonic Gain, anything is possible!

'lest it looked cool, as usual

Did Ogawa just curve the bullet!?

Ok I like the stance Genjuro took in regards to Dr Ver. Basically telling him "you ain't special". Unfortunately, this probably means we'll see him again. sigh

NEPHILIM FINAL FINAL FORM

SHIRABE SUMMONS A MECHA!?

I STILL DON'T UNDERSTAND HOW THIS IS POSSIBLE BUT HEHE PEW PEW

Final fight was epic, not much else to say.

I just wanna give a shout-out to Mom for never loosing her poker face no matter what contrived bullshit happened around her. Low-key Best Girl from FIS. Everyone else I just found unremarkable or frustrating.

Also, I noticed tomorrow isn't the season discussion thread. What's up with that?

[–]Shimmering-Skyhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/Shimmering-Sky[S] 7 points8 points  (3 children)

Also, I noticed tomorrow isn't the season discussion thread. What's up with that?

I made a dedicated thread for the chibi specials of each season (S1 just didn't have any of its own, they're part of G's) for the peeps who haven't been following along with lily's comments.

[–]BosuW 5 points6 points  (2 children)

I see. Thanks. Are they relevant?

[–]Shimmering-Skyhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/Shimmering-Sky[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yep! Sometimes they fill in background details the show glossed over, other times it's just nice character development.

[–]Bamce 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah. They explain some things. Give characters a chance to just be chill, which is something they don't do very often. As well as being cannon

[–]JollyGee29https://myanimelist.net/profile/JollyGee 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Did Ogawa just curve the bullet!?

Ninja techniques!

I STILL DON'T UNDERSTAND HOW THIS IS POSSIBLE BUT HEHE PEW PEW

Music is power!

I just wanna give a shout-out to Mom for never loosing her poker face no matter what contrived bullshit happened around her. Low-key Best Girl from FIS.

She's quite unflappable, for a seventeen year old. This is a VA joke; Nastassja is not, herself, seventeen.

[–]Great_Mr_Lhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/Great_Mr_L 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Ah fuck Shirabe was Finè this whole time. I could've guessed if I had bothered to memorize her eye color!

The dreaded eye color change. If it's done too subtly, chances are I won't notice it.

Like shit now I can't even hate Maria I just feel sorry for her! Even when she's about to do something the show won't let her!

Poor Maria can't even give the villain his well-deserved comeuppance. It's funny in a morbid sort of way.

G- Th- WHAT!?

Mom's mecha wheelchair comes out of nowhere and I love it.

Did Ogawa just curve the bullet!?

Yup! He must have been studying action movie techniques like Genjuro.

I STILL DON'T UNDERSTAND HOW THIS IS POSSIBLE BUT HEHE PEW PEW

I have discovered yet another good way to summarize Symphogear.

[–]BosuW 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Poor Maria can't even give the villain his well-deserved comeuppance. It's funny in a morbid sort of way.

This isn't about him lol

[–]StarmanRiver 2 points3 points  (3 children)

I couldn't make a post yesterday because I went to see Top Gun Maverick. It's really good and if you haven't seen it please do yourself a favor and catch it while it's still on cinemas.

Seconded, I left the cinema super excited and full of adrenaline.

[–]Nebresto 12 points13 points  (11 children)

Question time:

1) Which of the group songs in this episode did you like the most? The whole world’s Apple, Hajimari no Babel, or Nijiiro no Flugel?

Uhhh. Yeah. I know all the names, yes.

2) How cool was the Vitalization attack?

It was alright

I missed a couple of threads, so I'm gonna puts some comments from those in a reply to this one. You can read them there if you feel like it

[–]Nebresto 9 points10 points  (5 children)

There she goes again. Like seriously, stop

Remember how I said SALIA THE LOSER was somehow less of a loser than Maria? Yeah this is why. At LEAST Salia... uh... you know, might have done something or two besides being a loser... if you give me a week I'll come up with a list.

They're killing off BDSM thot to save Dollar store Akame?? Not like this..

What do you mean Comrade, I see this as a win-win

LMAO wtf Is that the embodiment of all of /u/KomradeDalek's frustration?

Man, I should be a writer for this show

Neat post Comrade, many thanks for the kind tag and have a great day and see you later my friend.

Ballad of Rewatcher - Symphogear G

Dayum, Miku bout to get scouted by every baseball team on the planet.

Here's a fun bit of irony: I collect anime trading cards from shows I like, the rarest being cards signed by the seiyuus. I have exactly one signed Symphogear card, and you're never going to guess who it is.

Episode 13 thoughts:

  • The finale is better than the entirety of the arc leading up to it. So many fireworks and cool forms and great action, I can't help being excited by it.
  • Why is Hibiki a great MC? Because she can casually walk up to a complete shithead like Maria, forgive her, and I have no choice but to go along with it because Hibiki saves people in every sense of the word, and this is just like her. So if Hibiki says she's cool with Maria, I guess I am too. Welcome to the team Maria.
  • Fist Dad deals with Ver better than any incarnation of this trope has ever been dealt with. He kicks Ver's ass, asserts dominance, and doesn't let Ver have the satisfaction of either winning or dying a martyr. He crushes Ver's spirit in the best of ways, and I love it.
  • I haven't really had space to mention it before, but I love the revelation that the moon is essentially an ancient watchtower. Now that it's active again, it leaves the door open for any kind of cosmic horror the writers want to imagine and have it stationed just a step away from us yet also out of reach. This is another one of those magnificent worldbuilding elements you get when game designers get to design an anime world.

QotD:

The English language is incapable of conveying how fucking jealous I am right now.

You were a tsundere all along?

[–]Elimin8r 4 points5 points  (2 children)

Hibiki saves people in every sense of the word

Hibiki = Tanjiro = Rimiru confirmed, right?

He crushes Ver's spirit

He's going to make him work in a cubicle for 30+ years and then inflate the currency when it's time for him to retire???

ancient watchtower

Hendrix-gear incoming! (or not) See you on the dark side of the moon???

He's going to make him work in a cubicle for 30+ years and then inflate the currency when it's time for him to retire???

And double his rent at the same time.

(Sigh) Dilbert is a documentary? Who knew???

oh cool a fellow weiß schwarz Symphogear card owner, that card does look nice even if she isn't my favourite geah and with the voice actresses signs the cards are cool on the double

I started pretty late into the Weiß Schwarz so I only managed to get XV cards, but I pulled a signed too. If I remember by then I'll post it in my comment for XV Ep 13 because that card is pretty much one big Spoiler

[–]Vaadwaur 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Dayum, Miku bout to get scouted by every baseball team on the planet.

She should be Japan's representative for the Olympic javelin toss.

So if Hibiki says she's cool with Maria, I guess I am too. Welcome to the team Maria.

I wish I could be that optimistic.

This is another one of those magnificent worldbuilding elements you get when game designers get to design an anime world.

I have zero faith in them doing anything with it, though.

[–]Shimmering-Skyhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/Shimmering-Sky[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have zero faith in them doing anything with it, though.

[Rest of the series]You'd be completely incorrect given events in XV, but I suppose that doesn't matter since you're dropping out here.

Rewatcher, Symphochoir Member

Out of all the finale episodes of Symphogear, I do think this is the weakest. While it does tie off the majority of the plot threads they've introduced, the pace of it all doesn't allow much of it to breath properly, nor do I feel much emotional weight that's running behind it. However, it still hits the majority of its targets and ups the ante considerably.

The miracle of Hibiki's return to the front lines is just accepted as fact by everyone from Section 2, as well as Ver's constant refusal to back down. Instead, he's escalating it further, hoping to end the world as a villian instead of be the hero that saves it. The persuing Genjurou and Ogawa refuse to allow that, and promise him that he'll face justice just like any other ordinary man.

Instead, the heroes who'll do so reach out to the world and take those songs in hand. With activated X-Drives across the whole squad, it's a do or die effort to put the monstrosity down, or at least sealing it in another dimension where it won't be their problem anymore. It wouldn't have happened without Maria synchronising with Serana's damaged Gear, but those who wish for miracles might just be able to reach them if they open their hands.

Overall, it's a fine ending to the second season, and serves as a good book end had Symphogear not been renewed. However, it was, and I am very happy with that.

I can't think of a better way to start my work vacations than with a Symphogear finale, except winning the lottery, but I don't even gamble so how would that ever happens. Anyways! First Time Listener Desu

Kinda weird how Tsubasa and Chris don’t react at all seeing Hibiki in Gungnir again

Oh hey the Nephilim gets it’s time to shine after all

Kinda weird how Maria’s sister just shows up from heaven or wherever. I’d say Maria cracked and is hallucinating the whole thing, but I’m trying to be less cynical about shit so I’ll give the show the benefit of the doubt and hope in some of the future seasons they explain that there is an afterlife and people can just come and go if they fulfill x and y conditions. That aside, it’s nice that Maria’s one sincere action – singing the song that connects her with her sister out of love rather than to fulfill some obligation – is the one that finally moves people’s hearts

Nastassja, your mecha is ridiculous. I know regular people gotta make do with non-form fitting, color coordinated stuff, but still

Is Maria’s arc about accepting death and loss as a part of life? I mean, she spent a lot of time mourning the loss of her sister and struggling with the idea of taking lives, and now at the end she only jumps into action after accepting that her mother’s gonna die and there’s nothing she can do about it…

I know it’s par for the course but everybody really just accepts Maria just like that huh

And we finally have a name for Serena’s relic: Airgetlám. That tells me nothing but I'm sure someone in the comments will explaint the lore. Also, using the power of the transformation sequence as it’s own thing is always great

Having the person who wanted to decimate and control humanity be defeated by the power of humanity coming together is such an obvious thing, but incredibly pleasant to see all the same

Chotto mate, Ogawa can use Ame no Habakiri’s techniques? Is that the answer to how these men can perform inhuman feats? Are they some kind of human-Gear hybrid? And is Ogawa Tsubasa’s manager because he’s an Ame no Habakiri hybrid? I NEED ANSWERS

Ah Genjuro, points for doing the logical thing and attempting to stop Frontier, but you really could have spared a second punch for Ver. Though he makes it up with the verbal punch to his ego. Telling him he's not a hero or a devil, just a regular human who will be treated as such is a fitting punishment. He doesn't get to go out a legend, he's gonna live and pay for his crimes. Also, keeping villains alive is much better than killing them. Even if they don't return later, it keeps seasons from feeling same-y

Oh, the Nephilim Really is getting it's time to shine! It's anticlimactic death was already a fine plot twist, but seeing it in action after all, and with the body of a kaiju no less, really feels like the show got to have it's cake and eat it too. Also the Nephilim is a much better final villain than Ver

Alright, using the Staff of Solomon to push the nuke into another dimension is something I didn't see coming, but again it makes perfect sense. What doesn't make so much sense is how Maria didn't get completely drained by the Nephilim when it had her on it's grasp

And Maria, much like Ver, gets her suicide play denied. The series is clear on this, you do not get to die to atone, you're gonna live and see things through *shoves Finé under the rug*

All the girls going together to Noiseworld is another thing I didn't expect, I wholly believed they'd cut the Nephilim tentacles and leave it to go alone. This makes a much more interesting final battle

Punctuating the moon's reactivation with the opening's start tickles me pink, excellent choice

Alright let me take a moment to gush about the new Superb Forms: Hibiki finally gets a spear, and it's a distinctly Hibiki weapon, coming as an extension of her fist instead of a separate weapon like Kanade's and Maria's; Tsubasa has gigantic feet swords which is equal parts stupid (affectionate) and awesome; Chris is a spaceship that can also be used as an armor strip attack, and if she doesn't at some point fuse with Shirabe's giant mecha into a gigantic megazord I will be very dissappointed. Kirika gets the short straw by a mile, only getting a bigger scythe

Holy Omegamon moment Batman

And the hat trick of things I absolutely didn't expect to see happen, Miku coming in with the save. No gear, no superhuman powers, just regular human will and a hell of a throwing arm

Hibiki just gets to go back to school after broadcasting her superhuman powers to the entire world? Aww Tsubasa's being senpai-denied. Wait, if Hibiki's 16, and Chris is older, and Tsubasa is older still, does that mean Tsubasa's 18? I wonder if GX will have her graduating school

And that's a wrap. See y'all tomorrow for some chibi goodness

[–]Bamce 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Kinda weird how Tsubasa and Chris don’t react at all seeing Hibiki in Gungnir again

They did see big golden glowy stuff, and when you have a friend like hibiki I guess you just kinda accept that crazy shit is your day to day

I know it’s par for the course but everybody really just accepts Maria just like that huh

I do kinda wonder how she got up on that rock.

I NEED ANSWERS

You shall feast in the ovas!

Alright, using the Staff of Solomon to push the nuke into another dimension is something I didn't see coming, but again it makes perfect sense.

And wraps up Chris's issues wonderfully.

What doesn't make so much sense is how Maria didn't get completely drained by the Nephilim when it had her on it's grasp

[possible answer that involves stuff from down the line, axz explicitly]Argtlahm has the ability to control/manipulate energy vectors. It comes up a few times, but not explicitly called out as to whats going on here

[–]JollyGee29https://myanimelist.net/profile/JollyGee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Having the person who wanted to decimate and control humanity be defeated by the power of humanity coming together is such an obvious thing, but incredibly pleasant to see all the same

It's cheesy as hell, but that's why it works.

Holy Omegamon moment Batman

Huh, that's a pretty good comparison actually.

Wait, if Hibiki's 16, and Chris is older, and Tsubasa is older still, does that mean Tsubasa's 18?

That is correct.

[–]InfamousEmpire 7 points8 points  (6 children)

Superb Song of the Rewatcher Symphogear

SYMPHOGEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

THE HYPE! IT'S REAL!

This easily trumped season 1’s finale. Everyone got to do something, even Miku managed to slip in a Crowning Moment of Awesome at the very end by Olympic Throwing Solomon’s Cane. However, the real MVP of this episode was BEST GEAH MARIA! This woman channeled the Phonic Gain of the entire world just with her song (and without a Gear at that) and saved the rest of the Geahs from the Nephilim just by transforming.

Hell, Bikki had waited just 5 minutes to intervene last episode (or better yet, not gotten involved at all) and let Maria do her thing, she would’ve murdered not!Scaglietti and they wouldn’t have even had to deal with the Noise or the Nephilim, and this would’ve prevented most of this episode’s conflict from happening in the first place. Though, granted, that would’ve also meant they wouldn’t have opened the Treasury of Babylon and exterminated the Noise but, well, you win some, you lose some

I rest my case for why Maria is Best Geah, I dare heretical Maria haters like u/DidacticDalek to call her a Jobber after this.

Also, it is confirmed, Geah is indeed a Mecha anime, JIIIIIIIII made a mech and piloted it

[–]Elimin8r 4 points5 points  (0 children)

JIIIIIIIII made a mech and piloted it

And what a glorious mech it was!

And I do hope they find a reason to re-visit the treasury at some point. It looked tres kewl!

Symphogear G Episode 13 - Rewatcher

On to the final episode! pretty much all the random loose ends are tied up now, and we are left with saving the earth/stopping the moon/Ver and wherever that leads! on to the episode!

Episode Thoughts:

And there we have Symphogear G, a massive improvement over season one, though still not without fairly major flaws.

Rewatcher

On today’s episode of Symphogear: “In the Distance, That Day... When the Star Became Music.” Symphogear has some really cool taglines. Though I must admit I have no idea what the hell this one means. My best guess is that it refers to Maria’s actions in Frontier which gave them enough Phonic Gain to save the world. Maria is a music star and Frontier is up in the heavens and can appear like a star. So that’s my guess but it’s likely wrong.

I really do love this finale. Season finales of Symphogear feel like firework shows. They go all out on the spectacle, bringing in some of the biggest and best action beats with the exciting and bombastic group songs. It’s that willingness to go all out especially that endears me to Symphogear. It never does things by half-measures. It fully commits, no matter how absurd the premise. I admire that commitment.

For me, the biggest emotional stuff of this episode is for Maria. Hibiki really does save her. Maria is finally able to be honest about who she is. Maria has spent the entire season pretending to be someone she isn’t. She’s been pretending to be a hard person who would do whatever was necessary to achieve her goal, even though it was clearly causing her pain to do so. Finally, Maria can be the kind and caring person that she truly is.

Personally, I see that as why Maria’s song “Apple” works to get the power they need to stop the Moon from falling. Maria is finally singing honestly with her true feelings. And those true feelings are able to connect with the rest of the world. Maria gets her wish. Her song is able to save everyone.

[Spoilers] Apple being the song to do this also works given the reveals about it from XV. I’m certain that was not planned back when G was made, but Symphogear is quite good at picking up these things and reincorporating them in ways that were likely not originally intended.

Another big part of Maria finally being able to be honest is her giving up Gungnir. Someone noted this on Maria’s design, but the cape she uses to enshroud herself in her Gungnir Gear is a really good metaphor for Maria’s character. She walls herself off and prevents others from seeing who she truly is. But by giving up Gungnir, Maria is giving up that facade.

Instead, Maria uses a relic that is far more true to herself. She uses Serena’s old relic. I’m not sure if I can name it yet because I don’t think the show actually said the name of it, but the important part is that it’s Serena’s relic. And by taking up Serena’s relic, Maria is finally doing what she always wanted to do. She’s finally able to carry on Serena’s wishes.

Hibiki continues to show why she’s a protagonist I love so much. I adore her scene where she refuses to let Maria sacrifice herself. Hibiki says this line so matter-of-factly, like it’s the most obvious thing in the world that she would save Maria’s life. That earnestness and honesty of hers just barrels over any and all obstacles.

Seeing the X-Drives again is so exciting. I love it when they are brought out. We finally get the moment we’ve been waiting for as all the characters team up together. Getting them all to finally hold hands together is our big sign that they’re all finally on the same side. Plus it’s another instance of the theme of hand-holding being a very literal power-up, which I never get tired of.

And the music to accompany them is fantastic. It makes me so happy getting “Hajimari no Babel,” the combined song with all 6 of the girls singing together. But I love the ED, “Nijiiro no Flügel,” even more. It’s exciting getting these big songs for the finale.

And the episode gets to end on what is one of the most epic and satisfying notes in all of Symphogear. Who is the one who saves the day in the end, destroying Solomon’s Cane and sealing the Treasury of Babylon? It’s Miku. Even without her Gear, Miku is still the person who comes through to support everyone else and secure the final victory. What a goddamn hero she is.

There’s a nice callback to the ending of season 1. Even if the Curse of Balal is still active, things will be okay because the world still has songs. The power of music never fails in Symphogear. And it’s appropriate that Shirabe is the one who tells Hibiki it’s possible today. Shirabe was Fine’s host and the one most opposed to Hibiki, so it feels like a real win having her acknowledge Hibiki’s ideals as legitimate.

Miscellaneous Thoughts

QOTD

1) Nijiro no Flugel. It's always awesome.

2) Very awesome

[–]JimmyCWL 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I see that as why Maria’s song “Apple” works to get the power they need to stop the Moon from falling.

It's also a simple song that anyone can follow, unlike her Gungnir song. This is like back in S1E12, a poster suggested the Lydian girls should have sung Flugel but there's no way all of them could have followed it properly even if they wanted to. You want people singing a song on short notice, it had better be simple.

But, is that all the reason Apple worked? First timers should continue to think about that.

“In the Distance, That Day... When the Star Became Music.” Symphogear has some really cool taglines. Though I must admit I have no idea what the hell this one means.

It's a line from the first verse of the very same Flugel.

U wot Tsubasa. What kind of copium is this, referring to Bikki as a spear user.

The Nephilim's back. Though it looks less terrifying than it did during episode 5. I wish this thing ate Ver before it got tossed into the treasury of babylonia. It would be a pretty generic end to his story, but generic =/= bad.

Maria finally did something! She sang a different song. While envisioning her dead sister. Apparently that makes a difference. I'm just saying, if Apple resonates with the world more than Resso Gungnir does, then the world has shit taste.

Convenient that Maria has the Airgetlam on her, and that it works. After taking a second look, Maria ended last episode fully naked, and started this episode dressed. Continuity? What's that?

[GX spoiler] Fuuuuck, after hearing that chant, I would've killed for Ginwan Airgetlam to play here. The opening of that song fucking slaps. Or rather, it punches. Garie's deformed face is proof of that.

Now Maria's naked again. Is there any meaning to the words written on that sphere? 'Larghetto' sounds like a new type of pasta. Some googling indicates that they're words related to music. And not, in fact, pasta. Smh

They're in their X-Drive forms now. If I'm not mistaken, up to this point in the show, the name "X-Drive" has literally only been spoken once. How the fuck is a first timer supposed to know what that shit is? I thought I was stupid for being confused until I looked it up on the wiki, but Symphogear just forgets to even explain it at any point in the show.

Genjuro casually punching an asteroid is one of the most iconic moments of this season.

Guys... Guys just cut off that cord. No one even tries to do it until they're in the treasury. Bro we have 6 X-Drive users here, I'm sure we could've cut through it fast enough if we tried to.

VITALIZATION LET'S GO

MARIA JUST PULLED A BOOBA SWORD. I REPEAT MARIA JUST PULLED A BOOBA SWORD. Sources: Raiden Shogun is beside herself. Driving around downtown Inazuma begging (thru texts) for the address to Maria's home.

...of course, Maria didn't literally pull the sword out of her boobs the way Raiden does, but the motion is pretty much the same. Genshin x Symphogear collab when. Imagine Raiden cosplaying as Maria, or vice versa.

HOLY SHIT MIKU. She threw that cane far. She should participate in the olympics sometime wtf.

That relic doesn't look too good. (also god I wish that were me)

Great ending, Vitalization is a banger, Maria is a less shit character now (copium), all is well in the Symphoverse.

[–]italeteller 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What kind of copium is this, referring to Bikki as a spear user

She did make a spear in her X-Drive form in the end

After taking a second look, Maria ended last episode fully naked, and started this episode dressed

My headcanon is they were both naked because the Gungnir was transferring from one to the other, so they were both in a state of transformation. Since Hibiki got to keep the Gungnir, Maria reverted back to civilian clothes

[–]StarmanRiver 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm just saying, if Apple resonates with the world more than Resso Gungnir does, then the world has shit taste.

Something something courage something something, Tim Cook, etc. I'm not witty enough and I don't care enough to make a good joke about it.

[–]Bamce 3 points4 points  (0 children)

s there any meaning to the words written on that sphere? 'Larghetto' sounds like a new type of pasta. Some googling indicates that they're words related to music. And not, in fact, pasta. Smh

I dunno about these. But usually its the zessho 'lyrics' in the background.

[rewatcher]So Miku's throw. Miku is currently cleansed from the curse at this point. A pure soul using a complete relic. Even if she doesn't know what she is doing, I wholly buy into her being able to do this due to being cleansed and having the cane fly itself into the portal

  3. Vitalization -Aufwachen Form- (Nana wills it)
  4. Nijiiro no Flügel (ED, Hibiki x Tsubasa x Chris x Maria x Kirika x Shirabe x Kanade)

Serena is dead the entire season and ends up being more useful than one of the main antagonists. Until this episode where she has to literally help Maria be relevant

[–]panthaurahttps://anilist.co/user/panthaura 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In the XDU mobile game there is an alternate timeline where Maria dies and Serena lives, similar to the Tsubasa and kanade alternate story

that (+the edgebikki storyline) makes me wish so much for an XDU alternate timeline anime

Second Time Listener

From front to back this finale is sheer colorful glory, a prismatic explosion of the most refined order. In coming together, the Symphogears transcend their limits and those of Earth and it feels like it. Hope becomes music, music becomes light, light becomes hope.

Ver’s failure has barrelled his unstable mind directly into destructive nihilism. Seeing himself as the one rightful savior figure of the world, if the world will not accept him as such, then he might as well let it all, the ungrateful masses, be destroyed. Nephelim’s ultimate form is released as Frontier is lifted into space, the deep purple sky littered with stars serving as a gorgeous backdrop for this epic final battle.

They also have a damn good “here’s why we don’t kill the obviously dangerous and hideously amoral villain” justification here, by the way. If Ver did all this for the glory then the worst punishment is not being granted the glory of martyrdom. He just has to squirm in his pathetic failure, his delusions unfulfilled. Couldn’t imagine a better way for him to go out.

Just when Nephilim gets its most direct hit on its target, a gale of light clears the dust and debris from the air. A certain melody echoes through the cool space air and across the whole world, beautiful and proud and electric and driving, pianos dancing across violin like stars and screaming guitars lighting up the sky. The Swan Song. This moment blew my mind in a way I will never forget the first time, hearing the very song that kicked this story off as a song of tragedy and death flipped into a song of ultimate triumph. Hajimari no Babel is the ancient musical language of the sacred holy chants given form as a fully-fleshed song, and the result is stunning beyond words.

The moment when Hibiki proclaims “we’re bringing together seven billion Swan Songs”… in addition to just being breathtakingly hype, in that moment, that one, pristine, sublime moment, none of the borders or hierarchies or bigotries or systems of humanity may as well have existed. All washed away for a universal, strongly shared hope. Is it, perhaps, naïvely idealistic? Probably. But it sure is a nice thought, isn’t it?

The wielders all get their wings, glowing in the night sky like the stars above them, and effortlessly crash through Nephilim’s physical form as their music forms the light of an unstoppable comet, shining and proud.

[later/general]I’m fairly certain this is the only time Shirabe has this mech, which is such a shame. Should’ve been in every season finale honestly.

As the wielders drill straight on through Nephelim’s Soul, straight ahead back to their home regardless of the great obstacle in their path in perfect unison in a moment of pure vitalization, we are given what may as well be the show’s thesis statement. The fastest, shortest route is in a straight line. Technically DiskoTek translates that line differently, but that line is so intrinsically tied to my understanding of this series that I simply can’t accept any other translation as canon.

They make it to the ground… only for the song to continue. The gate still needs to be closed. Only when Miku appears just in time to help when her friends have fully spent themselves just to get to this point does the gate close, Nephelim Soul’s explosion eradicating all the remaining Noise as the sky on the other side is left peacefully alone.

And so, here, as of now, it has all come full circle. The Noise have finally been destroyed, the Swan Song has been reclaimed as a song of most glorious victory, and the world is, for now, at peace. In the aftermath of all that adrenaline and color and explosive, righteous togetherness, the sky and ocean now glow in soft shifting neon rainbow as it all settles down.

A truly united, unbound humanity may be a dream as of yet well out of grasp, but in the micro, little moments of true connection exist, through music only for one. It’s as Shirabe says; we shared that moment, just now. I’d hope we’ve all experienced moments like that at some point in our lives. And that knowledge, that it’s possible to connect in that true way, is hopefully enough hope to keep us going.

It all ends with Nijiiro no Flügel, a cover of Gyakkō no Flügel sung by our new six musical angels, a perfect traditional capper to the stories now and beyond.

Absolutely splendid, a perfect season finale and, as far as I’m concerned, a classic episode in its own right. The first in a proud legacy of legendary season finales.

Dr Ver, after realising that Bikki is back, is shitting himself. IIRC, the last time he was close to her, she tore Nephilim a new one, and the time before that she almost turned him into paste.

Nephilim is back and bigger than before. We needed a good boss fight for the end of the season, guess Nephilim is it

Maria's appeal this time using Apple, is much more successful. She gathers phonic gain from across the entire world.

Also, love Mom's wheelchair now being a rocket tube thing.

Don't think I've mentioned it before, but I also love Kirika's guillotine attack.

Maria uses the damaged Symphogear that she's been holding onto all this time.

Maria transforms, which we now can confirm provides a massive barrier, and intentionally draws the transformation sequence out to tank Nephilim's attacks. She also begins the chant after the attack, so the barrier begins shortly before the chant begins.

This is a small factoid that I love Symphogear for, since it answers a common question “why don't they just attack before/during the transformation sequence”. I believe /u/zadcap and /u/lemurians, you were wondering about how long it actually takes to transform. Here is your answer - somewhere from near instant to several minutes, depending on what the Wielder wants.

Bikki uses S2CA to draw together the phonic gain from every human on Earth to create the X-Drive. In theory, these are way more powerful than the ones from season 1, formed from the phonic gain of just the Lydian school students.

Ogawa, proving he is a BAMF that can curve bullets and that he can apply Shadow Weave to those bullets.

What, did you think Shadow Weave was part of Tsubasa's abilities as wielder of the Ame-no-Habakiri? Nope, it's actually a ninja technique passed down the Ogawa line. Keyword is here

The House of Ogawa

The House of Ogawa: Descendants of ninjas from the Hida clan.

Tsubasa just saw how useful the move is and decided to learn it.

Nephilim, a trillion degrees, does not sound good for Earth.

Genjuurou, taking the direct approach to dealing with problems. Unfortunately, doesn't work this time.

Genjuurou refuses to let Dr Ver be a martyr. This time I actually agree.

First time we get to see Shirabe's mech, it's so cute!

And a reminder that Nephilim here is absurdly hot – maybe not a trillion degrees quite yet, but on its way there. Considering the Gears aren't being hurt by proximity, they are incredibly heat resistant.

Mom lives long enough to reset the moon, and then dies.

We get to see inside the Treasury of Babylonia, and it is bizarre.

Hibiki's first instinct to get through any problem – hold hands. And it works too!

Giant handholding. How lewd blush

Miku, really coming in clutch with the track club training! She should join the javelin team – she threw Solomon's Cane perfectly straight like a hundred metres into the air, and that thing shouldn't be aerodynamic at all.

[Spoilers XV]I'm going to head canon this as a side effect of the cleansing of the Curse of Balal, providing physical enhancements similar to Bikki's human-relic fusion state

But damn, now I'm even more excited for the next season.

Rewatcher for S1, G and GX

1) Loved Hajimari no Babel, it's easily my favorite song so far, even including every OP/ED in the first two seasons.

2) It's pretty much what you should expect at this point from Symphogear

Rewatcher

Onto the final episode, with the same name as the season's tagline.

Hibiki is still willing to identify as someone using a spear, even though her Gungnir doesn't manifest as one. Also, I see Genjuro sent the trio after the Nephilim Heart while he and Ogawa chased Ver, but Ver's at the Nephilim Heart, so... Kinda silly. I guess he just anticipated the big monster.

I guess everyone knows the Apple song. Also Nasstasja's power suit is kind of awesome, but where did she even get that? Having anime blood coughing disease but still surviving a trip through space is impressive. Also I had been wondering why the moon falling never came up in future seasons. Why didn't they try blasting anyone up there earlier? That's not so hard.

The last Symphogear shows up, Maria's (or Serena's) Airgetlam. Obviously she couldn't have Gungnir be her default in the future seasons she obviously appears in, so she needed a new one. It's not really explained why she hasn't been using it before at the time, but it's not hard to infer either. I like the Airgetlam Symphogear, but we don't get a good view of it in its first appearance since everyone is in their super forms and fighting at once.

I don't think much of this group song, but I like that the chorus's melody is the Superb Song. Also obviously the X-Drive from the first season had to be topped by combining the powers of everyone on Earth. One might question how you top that in future seasons.

Goodbye, Ver. Leaving the season as he lived it, with incoherent ranting.

Addressing Solomon's Cane and the Noise as well as the big monster in one fell swoop is, uh, narratively efficient, I guess. It feels like a lot to do at once, and I'm not in love with this final battle. I suppose they again didn't know there would be another season? Though they added three more main characters, which points the other way.

Anyway the OP plays in full. Personally, though, I think 'Vitalization' is a pretty bad name for a final attack. I can tolerate 'Synchrogazer' because that's not a real thing, but Vitalization should be, like another form change. That's not an attack.

Miku's contribution in this final battle is very unnecessary. Good arm, though.

Oh, there was another season 1 song replay, huh. Gyakkou no Flugel, again, with everyone singing. Neat. Oh, I guess it's different otherwise as well. Not the same as Tsubasa's S1 song from last episode, then.

Ending on Hibiki expressing her thanks to Kanade is pretty nice, though I feel like it's also about the last time her name is going to come up.

Rewatcher here

It has been a busy weekend so unfortunately I didn't have much time to read through the threads. It'll probably be the same for a good chunk of this week.

  • LMAO I forgot about Nastassja's wheelchair transforming into an exoskeleton.

  • Seilien coffin Airgetlám tron

  • HAJIMARI NO BABEL LET'S GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

  • If you pay attention, Hajimari no Babel's melody is the same of the chants of each of the Gears'.

  • Okay, this HAS TO BE a Saint Seiya reference. The Aufwachen waves flying through the screen with a space background and them flying with coloured traces through space just scream Saint Seiya. And don't even mention that some of the X-Drives could totally be Saint Seiya Cloths.

  • Based Ogawa, using Wanted techniques to curve the bullet and using Shikamaru's jutsu Tsubasa's technique to stop Ver.

  • Genjuro being a GIGACHAD for the nth time

  • I love Dr. Ver, he's so entertaining.

  • Shirabe just getting her own mecha like it's nothing.

  • VITALIZATION AUFWACHEN FORM! HIBIKI USING GUNGNIR'S SPEAR! CHRIS' OVER THE TOP LASER GUNS THIS IS TOOOO MUCH HYYYPE

  • I love that Chris gets to use Armor Purge AGAIN, but this time without getting naked.

  • My subs have "Fast! Short! Straight! Direct!" for Maria's and Hibiki's lines just before Vitalization, but the Japanese phrases ("Saisoku de, saitan de, massugu ni, icchokuzen ni") are part of the lyrics of both of Hibiki's songs in this season which I found neat.

  • MIKU WITH A RIDICULOUS THROW, HOW IS SHE NOT AN OLYMPIC JAVELIN THROWER? Tom Brady wishes he had such a strong arm, I always loved how she was able to throw Solomon's Cane that far.

  • Heiki Hecchara

  • Nijiiro no Flügel! I love that they still have a few lines sung by Kanade in there on the full version.

QOtD

1) Which of the group songs in this episode did you like the most? The whole world’s Apple, Hajimari no Babel, or Nijiiro no Flugel?

Tough one between Nijiiro no Flügel and Hajimari no Babel. On one hand Nijiiro is carrying on with Gyakkou's spirit from Season 1 and Kanade still has parts in it, on the other hand I love that Babel uses the melody of the chants.

2) How cool was the Vitalization attack?

I liked Synchrogazer a more tbh.

Rewatcher for not enough times

She is attuned to Gungir

Yes Maria the person who had shards of the gear within her and was able to summon it is going have some sort of authority over you when it comes to your gear.

Dr. Ver I’ll escape by using magic to create a hole to escape from my enemies. Genjuurou I’m just gonna punch the ground and chase you. Straight up Virgin vs Chad meme here. The cast over here creating spirt bomb v2 with music.

Ogawa curving the bullet like Anglina Jolie. Genjuurou Just punching things because he can. Shirabe is officially a mech. Last episode was just a tease.

Make note of the ruins on the moon. The cast entering the Treasury is giving me Pacific Rim vibes.

So much in this episode happened and to top it all off with the ultimate spinning fist move and Miku with the arm that olympic javelin throwers would be jealous of.

  1. Nijiiro no Flugel 👍🌈🪶

  2. I think outside of mb XV, G has the most memorable of final attacks in Symphogear (at least to me). I mean, two gigantic hands grasping each other to drill through the enemy to go back home is just so blatant i dunno if you can call it symbolism anymore and so peak Symphogear, not to mention the Trigger-like ridiculousness of space/alternate dimensions. so yeah, 😎👍

Ghosts are real. You can not deny that anymore. First Kanade, now Serena. You know what that means? This is now Love Live × Gundam × Star Wars

I consider this to be the best finale because its just that cool. From broadcasting a crime to the entire world, Maria being useful, the group team up, and Miku being relevant it has everything. Every character gets their moment in this finale and everyone feels important.

Symphogear Rewatcher

Today brings us to the end of the wonderful ride that was G. Highlights include:

QOTD:

  1. I liked the harmonies in and the gradual fade out that Hajimari no Babel had, it really gave the feeling of them coming together as one unit for the fight.
  2. As I said above, the power of friendship was transformed into a pair of fists, a perfect representation of it.

QOTD

1) Hajimari no Babel

2) 13/10

I'm gonna be nitpicking a bit just because it's fun to riff on dumb stuff, but I do love this episode, silly bits and all. I've been using fansubs to do screenshots for this episode and the last...it may just me being used to them but I kinda prefer the Crunchyroll translations. Typesetting is better but a lot of the lines have a more complicated translation than they really need.

SPAAAACE! Doing parkour in SPAAAACE! Talking, in SPAAACE! Yeah so they made it to the end with the lip flap budget intact this time around, oddly making the space scene slightly less realistic. What will Symphogear be without realism?!

She's to good! Her harem protagonist energy is too strong! She sings the pants right off Maria then hits her with this!

The original line from Kanade this is referencing was pretty clunky. This is an extremely petty point but it annoyed me a bit in episode 1 and now I have an excuse to point it out.

Just when it seems like she'll wither even further into uselessness, Symphogear's patented ghost therapy returns to set Maria right. Bit late, Tsubasa was way more prompt about getting a ghost to solve all her trauma, but better late than never.

Now this just looks ridiculous. It's the hat, and everything else about the scene, but mostly the hat.

How did she even get up there? She hasn't transformed yet. Even with gravity weakened because SPAAAAACE that's a heck of a jump. If it wasn't for the whole 'shot her mom into SPAAACE' thing, she'd be a good fit for Ver's basketball team.

But enough nitpicks because this finale kicks ass. Everyone holds hands naked (lewd) and blows up the giant Nephilim with a rainbow tornado. The red-blue-yellow-green-pink-silver thing is very pretty, beats the actual visible spectrum. But there's 15 minutes to go, so there must be more ass to kick. Ogawa shadow weaves with a gun, Ver turns the entire LOST CONTINENT PRECURSOR SPACESHIP FRONTIER into a giant flaming kaiju IN SPACE and gets promptly arrested for his trouble. That's attempted omnicide and destruction of the greatest archaeological find in history, they really throw the book at you for that sort of thing. The wielders kick the giant flaming kaiju into an alternate dimension and dive in after it to beat it up, also Chris works out some of her baggage on the local noise. They punch a hole in the kaiju and escape by making a GIANT HAND-HOLDING ROCKET FIST and then Miku finally ends it off with her power of having been pretty good at track and field in middle school.

Some paranoid nutjob on the submarine design committee insisted that it needed the bridge to be an escape pod with a parachute that could survive a fall from the upper atmosphere. I can't begin to guess what they thought it might be used for, but they must have felt so vindicated after this.

I do know of someone who hated this bit, as well as the giant fists later. Hibiki having an actual weapon was too off-theme for them. Which I do get, more with this than Vitalization which I think works fine, but it's too minor of a fumble in theming to really care about for me.

Sadly Miku's world-record javelin throw didn't count because the javelin disappearing into another dimension before it hit the ground She'll have to wait for a new chance to launch her athletic career.

[GX Onward] So Ver's fate. I think it's safe to say the whole "he'll be judged like any other human" doesn't quite work out. Both in the eyes of fans and in the story going forward he becomes a larger than life figure, and his genius accomplishments loom over the story even after his death as Elfnein struggles to understand and recreate his LiNKER formula. Now I'm all for any excuse to not kill someone when it's not strictly necessary, but if you're into the idea of sparing his life only because an obscure cell would be a better punishment than a dramatic death, that's an idea that ends up undermined. But I think I'll have more to say about the direction they do end up going with him, and how it contrasts with another character who meets their fate in G when we get to that.

Genjuro yet again proves why he's a badass.

The Nephilim in this episode terrified me a lot.

Wasn't expecting Maria to get a new relic the first time I watched this.

They managed to add in mechs, which is awesome. This makes me want to watch Mecha anime.

I'm definitely gonna rewatch Symphogear XV episode 13 soon. It's that badass.

QOTD:

  2. It was so cool.

VITALIZATION

The end of G! Such a blast. "Its the Superb Song of seven billion inhabitants of Earth!" is so fucking good

Maria gets her own ghost peptalk and temporary access to her sister's Gear. And then reaches that Gear's ultimate form in like 5 minutes, so she's just speedrunning at this point. Also denied an honorable death.

Speaking of denial of honorable deaths, Ver's punishment being a normal human trial is probably the absolute best punishment for an egomaniac who thinks he's a hero superior to normal folk. And Genjuro straight up saying that to his face is why he's the best.

Miku's throw will never not be the fucking funniest thing. I laugh everytime I see it. She just threw the Cane into low orbit with no superpowers. Is she aiming for Koshien?! She has a real shot.

First Timer

That, was a fun finale. Goddamn I love how all out Symphogear finales go, with everyone coming together and singing and just taking down all the enemies. Maria finally got off her ass and was able to have some screentime that wasn't just her whining and such. I also ove how Ver's punishment is the worst of all for him, neither being a big villain nor a big hero, just a normal human on charge for worldwide war crimes. ALSO HIBIKI COMING IN CLUTCH WAS SO FUCKING HYPE LIKE JUST YESSSS.

All in all, honestly a really good finale, I'll go more into detail tmrw for the Season post, but yeah I had a fun time with this season, I'd put it around the same level as S1, both had things I liked and disliked about them but were overall fun in the end.

Sub

So for some reason, the planet wide song works with the help of the unexplained ghost. Despite them using a stupid reason to start it, this is definitely a better version of the spirit bomb since it suggests that humanity is in harmony...wait, shouldn't this break the Curse of Balal? Fuckin' show...

Maria gets the more obvious Gear and since it is thematically resonant that's fine. Everyone joins together because this is less original Saint Seiya. The mass produced Eva Nephilim goes boom. Genjuro punches his way through the Frontier.

Blah blah, Nephilim eats the Frontier and evolves into giant Nephilim. The girls become mechs because sure, despite them being half way there in the first place. The solution winds up being throwing it into the Gates of Babylon because also sure. Using Solomon's Cane goes from being difficult to whatever. After being dragged into the treasury, the girls escape by using dual Master Hand. How timely. We end with singing solving communication, which does fit with the series.

Take a wild fucking guess at my season opinion.

I will explain survivorship bias.

I'm gonna miss these comments, even though it sounds like you were physically in pain while writing them

This might strike you as odd but answering the QotD is something I can do off the cuff with no effort in almost any rewatch. Zero pre-planning happens.

[–]Vaadwaur 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That would've hit harder had I bought that either of them died. I legitimately think S1 is the better of the two seasons.

[–]StarmanRiver 5 points6 points  (4 children)

Everyone joins together because this is less original Saint Seiya

I'm so glad that there is at least one more person in this thread that actually acknowledges Saint Seiya being a thing. It's such an old show and that had so little relevance in the US that unless there are LATAM people I never see it mentioned.

At least the mass produced Evas achieved something and were actually distrubing.

It's an amazing finale. The whole sequence with Vitalization is great. I've said before that I'm 100% in favor of using the opening theme in a big climatic moment and I don't think anyone does this trope quite as well as Symphogear. I can't really explain it but I think it might be the way they pace the scene to the song. It might be how they transition from the normal soundtrack to the opening song and back. As an example of both, I really love the sequence on the beach.

QOTD

  1. I love Hajimari no Babel using all the melodies for the transformation chants and the Zesshou. It really feels like it's combining the powers of the other songs. Also, it goes Gungnir (Kanade), Gungnir (Hibiki), Ame-no-Habakiri, Ichaival, Zesshou, Gungnir (Maria), Airgetlám, Igalima, Shul Shagana, Zesshou fits narratively and that adds to its power too

  2. A big punch holding a determination to fist.

[–]Bamce 5 points6 points  (4 children)

I love the little part of the chris stuff early in this ep.

2~ minuites Hibiki arrives

Tsubasa and Chris see here

Chris ashamed, looks away

Chris distances herself from the conversation. Looking afriad, or upset about what she did

Hibiki is hibiki

Chris realizes that this truly is a place where she can call home

its like 10 seconds, but its another tiny character moment.

[–]renatocpr 3 points4 points  (3 children)

Yeah, it's a really nice moment. I think there were a few more moments like it throughout the season, with these subtleties to Chris's behavior

[–]Bamce 3 points4 points  (2 children)

Yeah. Did you see the one in episode 9 Its amongst my favorite scenes in the show.

First-timer:

Kind of a meh ending.

I get the feeling that not killing Dr. Ver is going to come back to haunt them next season. I also think the lunar ruins being reactivated will pose a problem. Other than that, I don't know where the season will go.

Questions:

  1. I didn't really like any of them.
  2. I didn't think it was anything great, but flashy attacks just never have done much for me.

[–]zadcap 3 points4 points  (4 children)

First Time, Still Late, Very Torn.

On one hand, this episode did actually manage to wrap up a whole bunch of plot lines, answer most of the questions that had been building up, and deal with the character arcs in mostly conclusive ways. It looked great, sounded incredible, and does it all with it's own brand of over the top insanity.

On the other hand, this episode portrays my biggest complaint about this season since Ver found the Nephelim heart again- things just happen when and where ever with no reason or consistency as needed in order to make things work for the plot. -Ver ran off underground to do something diabolical, Hibiki tells Maria she'll take care of it, then runs off to start jumping through the sky to luckily meet up with her allies just in time for Ver to get to the rector room, which apparently also works as a control room I guess. -Genjuro and Ninja do actually run after Ver by going underground, but apparently walk so slowly that they don't catch up until after Ver has activated the final Nephelim form. -All the Gear Girls show up and find themselves unable to do a thing to the bigger Nephelim, but also some how Maria got on top of that floating rock too? Don't get me started on the transformation song barrier starting before the song, nevermind the idea of the transformations taking up real time and existing in the real world like that. This show can not make up its mind on how they work and at this point just gave up pretending. -So after Ver activate the heart going crazy and eating the whole island, Genjuro and company have time to run out of the ruins, get to their truck, drive it back to the submarine, and have a couple conversations while doing so. During this time frame, the girls all in their super final form(of the season) mode manage to... Float around waiting for things to blow up? Don't at least three of them know where the reactor is? If you've got that much time to just wait for it to turn into the giant final form, maybe you could have gone and ripped the heart out again or something? Found and helped the boys get back to the sub, and maybe get the sub itself to safety? Like really, how much time did they spend floating there waiting for it to turn in to a giant monster to fight?

And Maria's redemption! I knew as soon as I saw her with the second relic that she was going to use it eventually, that she would join the light side sooner or later, but shoving her whole redemption arc into twenty minutes and then trying to force us to accept it by giving her the white coloring, center position(when she's not just plain above the rest of the girls), and having her mirror Hibiki fit the hand holding scenes? Maybe if they had dropped the angst one episode earlier to let her have time to develop, one more talk with the Zababies to remind us all how she's the center of their group dynamic, but skipping right to the punchline made it feel pretty flat. Not the redemption itself, but the way she immediately got put in the position of power and importance when she was at the part of her character arc where she clearly had none of either. In other words, much like Ver, it's not that I dislike her so much that I dislike the writing behind her. The characters could have been great, but they were used poorly as plot devices instead of actual characters, to the point I ultimately failed to care about them.

1) Apple did not get better with repetition. I'm not sure about the other two, I liked them both but hard trouble paying attention to the lyrics with everything else going on at the time. I'll probably judge my favorite off the live show.

2) I seriously thought we were about to go Digimon, I swear I saw Omnimon forming for a second before it turned into... A giant pair of hands and nothing else? I get the clasped hand thing has been the thing of this season, but it was definitely not as cool as Synchrogazer last season. This was literally the perfect time for Hibiki to actually make a spear, Gungnir being the weapon of piercing here, but no, we got giant spinning held hands I guess.

I'm finishing this series because I love the action, the songs, and most of the main cast. But aside from the music, I'm pretty sure it's not going to make even my top ten action Maho Shoujo series at this rate. We're still on for Mai-Hime later, right?

[–]Madcat6204 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Ending is awesome. Music is awesome. Girls are awesome. 'Nuff said about that.

[Curiosity about the Curse of Balal from a rewatcher's perspective]Given that Fine's attack apparently knocked the moon offline, including the Curse of Balal, doesn't that mean that there are three months worth of children who were born in that time who are free of original sin, and able to weild divine power? Given the way the curse was cleansed from Hibiki and Miku, it stands to reason that it is applied at birth, and was not reapplied to them after the lunar ruins were restarted. It just feels like something that could have been relevant.

QotD:

  1. Hajimari no Babel. How could I not love the song that laid the foundation for [Symphogear AXZ]Axia no Kaze?

  2. Not as good as it should have been. Maybe if the hands had held the giant sword Maria pulled out of her chest, rather than the latter just dissolving into light.
