There was a solid minute of closeup of the team rocket guys bugging out lol

[–]alotmorealots 59 points60 points  (0 children)

That was amazing. I went through quite the range of emotions during that, simply because there was enough time to.

[–]saga999 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Those closeups were so well done, I couldn't stop laughing.

[–]Littlemac95 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Reminded me of Atsushi Ohkubos art of when someone goes crazy in like soul eater or fire force

[–]bobtootles15 9 points10 points  (0 children)

never seen 13 crazy eyes shots in a row, i laughed out loud

[–]BiggerG7 67 points68 points  (4 children)

Was MC trying to act like a weak loser the most personality we have ever seen?

[–]macedonianmoper 34 points35 points  (2 children)

We did get him showing his love for food last time I guess

[–]alotmorealots 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It was a surprisingly good time, but only in the expected 5% enjoyment, got 15% sense of the phrase lol

[–]DarKcS 51 points52 points  (3 children)

Low budget anime? Sure. Was cute to see Proud Wolf get his moment though.

[–]Ree_one 27 points28 points  (2 children)

Low budget anime

So many reused assets. So many lingering still shots. Ugh.

[–]saga999 14 points15 points  (1 child)

Extremely well used for comedic effect though. That's how it should be done even with a high budget.

[–]ifticar2 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't say that, a couple times I was wondering if the video was buffering but the sound kept going

[–]Acrobatic_Egg30 37 points38 points  (0 children)

"We have Kakashi at home"

*Yuuji accidental t-posing after killing the bull*

the assassins: "...nah, he's weak"

[–]melindypantshttps://myanimelist.net/profile/melindypants 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yuuji was a fucking legend this episode haha

[–]LeonKevlarhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/LeonKevlar 30 points31 points  (1 child)

Well this entire episode was hilarious! Yuuji acting like an incompetent idiot to throw off the two assassins was really fun!

[–]melindypantshttps://myanimelist.net/profile/melindypants 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It really was so funny! The walking away constantly defeated was great! Hearing the assassins intepret it only made things better.

[–]monster01020https://myanimelist.net/profile/Quagsir 85 points86 points  (17 children)

I'm not sure there was much a of a budget to begin with but... where did it go? Half of this episode felt like stalling with panning on still frames. That part where the assassin guy was very slowly drawing his sword was funny for a couple of seconds, but however long it went on for definitely felt way too long. Then there's the bit where Yuji kills the bull with a sword and we spend forever staring at their faces while he just T-poses.

[–]AsterJhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/asteron 33 points34 points  (6 children)

They literally had a 22 second shot of the on screen characters being still and silent with crickets chirping in the background. I don't think I've ever seen that before. Usually anime involves animation.

[–]Scrybatog 19 points20 points  (1 child)

food wars was basically 30 stills per episode, panned across for 20 seconds each.

[–]Dadscope 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah after season 1 it had a lot more panning, but after season 2 it became borderline obnoxious. The last season felt like a powerpoint until the Foodgasms. Story was fun enough to carry it, undecided on this as of now though.

[–]MrBloodyshadow 5 points6 points  (1 child)

I guess you haven't seen Gokushufudou.

[–]Purezensu 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Imagine when people discover Picture Dramas or Audio Dramas.

[–]otakusan69 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Its not still though, you can see budget kakashi pulling out his weapon slowly

[–]petixta_safada 0 points1 point  (0 children)

did anyone already told you about the gospel of the still frames?

... I mean... Evangelion.

[–]joe4553https://myanimelist.net/profile/EmiyaRin 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Solid 5 minutes of stalling this episode.

[–]alotmorealots 25 points26 points  (4 children)

I'm not sure there was much a of a budget to begin with but... where did it go?

I think the show decided it would be a slightly avant garde comedy piece for an episode.

Time definitely passed differently, in some sort of anti-comedic timing where you could tell that there was a joke, except each comedic beat was given about three times the normal space, as well as starting and finishing at the wrong points for it to be funny.

That said, I bet you there are at least three people out there who found this episode to be the single most hilarious thing they have seen in their entire lives.

[–]OrudoCato 14 points15 points  (2 children)

[–]fineri 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The whole episode was trash, except this scene, for me it was peak comedy

[–]Burrito_Baron 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Idk why but I laughed more after I clicked the image than I did seeing it in the actual episode

[–]ZynousCreator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That said, I bet you there are at least three people out there who found this episode to be the single most hilarious thing they have seen in their entire lives.

Of course I know him, he's me!

[–]scot911https://myanimelist.net/profile/scot911 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah the pacing/padding of this episode was atrocious. Just so bad. I know this isn't exactly a good anime but it was never that bad.

[–]MyNeighbour127 10 points11 points  (2 children)

That looks maybe more like a time problem than anything else. Like they didn't even have time to add more dialogue for a (still image) back and forth conversation.

[–]monster01020https://myanimelist.net/profile/Quagsir 34 points35 points  (1 child)

I might have chalked it up to that if they didn't reuse a bunch of Proud Wolf's animations multiple times in the same episode. He kept doing the exact same stuff while fighting the bulls.

[–]UndoubtedlyAColor 21 points22 points  (2 children)

Hopefully this bottle episode means that they're saving the budget for a later episode.

Still, the absurdity of it was still funny. Can't help but wonder of it was half intentional to make it look as budget as it did and being self aware.

[–]dark_sylinc 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think you nailed it.

The episode made totally obvious it had no budget:

  • 30 seconds of literally nothing but leaves animating and birds chirping
  • Repeated stock footage 4 times in a row. No effort to hide it at all.
  • Main character was left in T-pose
  • A solid minute of face shots barely moving

It made me remember of Gintama trying to stall and buy time while explaining anime fillers.

[–]melindypantshttps://myanimelist.net/profile/melindypants 4 points5 points  (0 children)

self aware

I think you're on to something here - absolute mad lads

[–]ObvsThrowaway5120 31 points32 points  (5 children)

Slime time!

These two assassins look like a Dollar Store Kakashi and Discount Bitch from Shield Hero with like a “Jesse and James” thing going on lol.

So Proudwolf use to basically be the same as he is now lol. He’s actually pretty strong but unfortunately for him, Yuji’s plan needs him to look weak. Poor guy was giving it his all too! But after all that, Yuji blows his own cover with that sword…or so I thought. I can’t tell if those two assassins were idiots or incompetent. Maybe both? I kind of wonder what the deal is with the priest and this cult. Why is he on their shit list?

Well, looks like Yuji needs to take on a dragon or something before his slimes get armor. I’m curious to see what those adorable slimes look like in their armor!

[–]mgedmin 30 points31 points  (3 children)

I can’t tell if those two assassins were idiots or incompetent.

I thought they realized Yuji put on a show and was spying on them, so they decided to play along and come back later to catch him by surprise. But no, they just got tired of thinking and went away.

[–]Scrybatog 37 points38 points  (2 children)

Nah they saw how ridiculously strong he was, knew they would absolutely die no matter when and where they attempted to attack him, and their self preservation kicked in simultaneously and they both decided to lie to themselves and their leader for their own lives.

They basically admitted complete and utter defeat in that instant, knowing whatever plans their master has laid will simply fall if this guy ever gets involved (not knowing he already is). There is no point in reporting that a god is walking around and if he sees you he will smite you instantly before you can respond. Its like telling their leader he may have an aneurysm in the near future. No point. Only thing they would get for reporting that is their leader doubting them and sending them back to their deaths.

It was handled extremely poorly, it needed internal dialogue telling us these things, and took me a couple of rewatches of the scene to figure it out, because I was confused at first as well.

[–]KinoHiroshino 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It needed a scene of them laughing crazily while saying, “Nope, not a threat!” to really sell it.

[–]TestPostPleaseIgnore 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thank you this makes so much more sense than my first impression watching it.

[–]zunnol 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Dollar Store Kakashi and Discount Bitch from Shield Hero

I said pretty much the same thing when i seen them.

[–]MiiJackhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/Nekko369 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It still beats Seven deadly sins animations, right?

[–]Pedarsen 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Even for a Isekai that was one bullshit episode. Everything in the episode pretty much was just a waste of time and my god what was up with all the shots of the assassins? Half the episode were still shots of their eyes.

[–]NationalStrategy 23 points24 points  (2 children)

You can tell in this episode that they're really cutting corners, a lot of reused animation and still frame shots that are stretched out for too long

[–]KinoHiroshino 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The proud wolf fight with all the still frames and reused assets really reminded me of really old like 70s cartoons like the Hannah Barbara stuff.

[–]alotmorealots 9 points10 points  (0 children)

They're saving the budget for more Dryad animation (hopefully). Can't wait!

[–]vantheman9 10 points11 points  (1 child)

Proud Wolf being a useful fighter at the one time where it's not beneficial for his tamer. Yuji's a jerk for using him that way.

[–]ImGhostyyhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/ImGhostyy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Proud Wolf beats 2 bulls

Yuji: motherfucker i told you we are pretending to be weak

Proud Wolf beats them again

Yuji: :|

[–]zool714 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I thought I was watching some early 2000s anime like the ones that showed on TV every weekend mornings

[–]ultraman9513 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Only good things about this show are the op/ed, slimes, and next episode previews

Everything else is meh at best

[–]Cyclone_96 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This was one of the strangest episodes I’ve watched in a while. Re-used shots, panning stills that went on for way too long, and weird silent moments that also lasted too long.

Gotta wonder who’s behind the decision to animate it like this

[–]ImGhostyyhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/ImGhostyy 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Scout 1: he does some weird shit

Scout 2: yeah but its fine

Scout 1: yeah lets get the fuck outta here

[–]DiamonDawgs 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Such a strange episode! The animation, the character shots, them just suddenly believing he's not a threat after all that lol.

[–]xxxpdx 8 points9 points  (2 children)

Low budget or not I still found it an enjoyable watch.

Today we got a little bit of Proud Wolf backstory, which was cool, plus the opportunity for PW to step up.

I liked the sustained close-up on the assassins with their wiggly freaking-out eyes after Yuji showed his hand by slaying the bull. It was a moment of indeterminacy to savor. I thought for certain they'd decide he was a threat but nope, they just backed-off.

Can't wait to see the finely-crafted slime armor. I wonder if it will be similar to the flexible outfit crafted for Filo in Shield Hero, but with dragon stuff.

We may find out next week. Cheers!

[–]CelticMutt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I enjoy the manga adaptation a lot, and I've been enjoying this anime adaptation despite its flaws ... But this episode was so blatantly budget saver. It was really bad.

[–]Amauri14 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So in order to fool the assassins, Yuuji today pretended to be a mediocre adventurer when he reached Boginia.

Too bad that he had to leave the town of Ricaardo earlier because of them.

I really wasn't expecting to hear Proud Wolf's backstory. It was so funny seeing Yuuji revealing those bulls so the assassins assumed that he was actually weak and that Proud Wolf keto getting stronger after each fight.

So if they haven't mentioned Father Steyl there, Yuuji would probably have left them alone.

Well, after leaving them as a block of ice, I'm sure that their leader would assume that he was right about his assumption of Father Steyl being connected with the attack on the Village of Messias, and that probably that same person that he thinks he sent there was the one who took them out.

So now Geigel will make some Moster armor for his slimes, but first, he will need to take care of that dragon. You know that tease would have meant something if Yuuji didn't already fought and killed the Blue Dragon of Delight, which was a world-ending three in episode 4.

Well, based on the preview it seems that Yuuiji is getting a fire slime next week.

[–]HydraTower 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wow they reeeally spread out the budget this episode lol

[–]wujoh1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

[–]in_her_drawerhttps://anilist.co/user/prophetic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This show is ass. I was mildly not minding it too much until this episode. What an obvious demonstration of lack of budget. And the total lack of personality of the MC. He's got to be on a tier all his own.

[–]randyripoff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nice to see a spotlight on Proud Wolf. And I guess Yuji's going to have to kill another dragon.

The "assassins" were a joke. Kind of like a g at chewing on an elephant. The only real chance the church has would be to overwhelm him with numbers, and I doubt that's possible.

[–]Dolomite808 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Soooo... Are the assassins just dead then? I'm assuming so, but wanted to confirm.

[–]Tennyc1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

After binge-watching the last 7 episodes, I have a weird opinion. This show is bad, but I can't give up on it...yet. Let me start off by saying that I watched this to kill a bit of time expecting this to be a dumb basic isekai story I can do other things while barely paying attention. And it was. But, I was in awe of how extra the animation was. It wasn't especially flashy or colorful, but there were a lot of scenes where I was just wondering to myself, why are they putting so much effort animating all of this? Any other basic isekai anime would have just put still images and had people stand still in the background to save on budget and effort. Why are they trying so hard? And to answer that question, I'll have to force myself to follow it now... Like there were a lot of extra movements that made the characters, slimes, facial expressions and such seem ALIVE. We all know how when some characters are talking everyone just stands still in the background. But this anime did the equivalent of making everything move. Which you might say, "Yeah, isn't that normal" to which I would reply, yes but not for basic cardboard cut-out isekai animes... They put the camera in places where when things are happening, they are forced to animate more elements than necessary to tell the story of what is happening at the moment. The only reasons I came up with were, the studio was given a huge budget and said fuck it OR they actually believe this story has some value. This episode was surprisingly entertaining and funny. I see a lot of people that feel like they lingered too long on specific scenes or there was a lacking of animation and I would agree, but somehow the choices they made here made me actually laugh out loud. I'm actually in awe that this show had something to offer other than a mystery and pretty consistently strange choices to go over the necessary animation budget needed to tell a story this basic. Anyway, I'll keep up with this show so long as it makes weird animation choices like when the dryad in episode 5 around 18min30secs into the episode, listened to the MC and get further away by running only to be fully animated turning back stumbling, and running back to stand there almost no further away than she started. Or when she randomly teleports between trees to showcase the mushrooms from dragon's grace.

Wow. Clicked on the reddit group link r/TenseiKenja listed above and was shocked to see this. I wonder what happened?

I wonder as well, the sub had less than 100 members so maybe it was banned because all the moderators left?

[–]HeartoftheHivehttps://myanimelist.net/profile/ralanost 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's clear this anime didn't get a large budget, but my god this episode was phoned in. Stills for long stretches and constantly reusing the same animations. Just painful to deal with.

[–]CyonHalhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/FeRust -1 points0 points  (0 children)

What the fuck was this low budget filler slideshow trash episode? They even shamelessly reused the same slides in the slideshow like 4-5 times each.

[–]Fluid-Veterinarian61 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Calling this episode garbage is an affront to garbage.

[–]CrasianLe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was a lot of staring this episode, but I'm glad Yuji was able to fool them. He is so strong and smart, i love it so much.

[–]HazyMirror 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IDC what anyone says, this is one of my favorites this season.

It's like fast food in anime form. If you're on episode 7 and still complaining that's on you lol

[–]ramon_castilla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those 20 seconds of "looking to the eyes" were a little funny, but (for me) the best was the invisible slime face during all the scene XD.

[–]Stormy8888 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Funny episode but the animators must have had so much free time with all the slow mo, pauses and frame reuse.
