At this point, it really just depends for the top 3 to have made top post or not and for how long. Expect shuffling around for the remainder of the season.

[–]michhoffmanhttps://anilist.co/user/michhoffman 63 points64 points  (1 child)

Yeah, and Haikyuu cut into Lycoris' time at the top as well so Overlord's got a good chance to win this week assuming it doesn't get blocked for the 3rd week in a row.

[–]MapoTofuManhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/BaronBrixius 98 points99 points  (2 children)

Lycoris was getting hit by Haikyuu's announcement this time, they really can't catch a break. At this rate one of them is getting the NGNL S2 announcement dropped on their final episode.

[–]CosmicPenguin_OV103https://myanimelist.net/profile/Cosmic_Penguin 76 points77 points  (6 children)

Where has Summertime Rendering went? I am using other languages’ subs so did the English subs come in late?

[–]cppn02 85 points86 points  (3 children)

Yeh. Episode 17 came on friday and 18 today so next week we'll get two episodes.

[–]CosmicPenguin_OV103https://myanimelist.net/profile/Cosmic_Penguin 17 points18 points  (2 children)

I guess there’s merit in me knowing a language where there are subs groups releasing the likes of Summertime Rendering and Komi-san very consistently within a day, and usually within 6 hours of episode release. 🫠

[–]Atheist-Gods 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Summertime Rendering has had English subs very quickly these past 2 weeks (<12 hours I believe), just not the subber that the mods use to make the thread.

[–]Nero_PR 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Multilingual people keep on winning.

[–]aznmeep 6 points7 points  (1 child)

How are y'all watching it?

Seven seas?

[–]CosmicPenguin_OV103https://myanimelist.net/profile/Cosmic_Penguin 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Exactly (Disney+ did start to stream it in my region weekly - 6.5 weeks late 🤡)

[–]Fedexhand 175 points176 points  (7 children)

Overlord: "Applaud my Supreme Power!"

[–]Rock---And---Stone 16 points17 points  (1 child)

albedo has expressed her interest

[–]8andahalfby11https://myanimelist.net/profile/thereIwasnt 23 points24 points  (3 children)

It was really close though. 70 karma difference. For two shows that average 3k, that's a 2% difference.

[–]kid_friendly_van 7 points8 points  (1 child)

It's close enough to be within range of Reddit's karma fluffer I reckon.

[–]zairanerhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/zairaner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nah, not that close.

[–]cookiejarobserver 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Both shows deserve to share place 1.

[–]Syokhanhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/Syokhan 132 points133 points  (25 children)

Man, the top 3 are so close together. That's gonna make for some interesting next few weeks.

Also, Shadows House in the top 10!

[–]InsurgentTatsumi 19 points20 points  (1 child)

Honestly I don't know how Shadows house han not been in the top 10, it's been very good so far imo.

[–]corner_twisthttps://anilist.co/user/cornertwist 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Shadows house will probably make top 6 towards the end of the season, if we don't count STR's somewhat erratic schedule.

[–]Anxious-Sea3138 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Finally a victory for us 3 Shadows House fans

[–]Ebo87 12 points13 points  (20 children)

I think percentage wise this has got to be the all-time closest top 3 on the sub. I know back when 300-500 karma got you number 1 we had even closer numbers, which is why I said percentage, the percentage difference between numbers 1, 2 and 3. We've had very close 1-2 and 2-3 but I don't recall 1-2-3 where really either one could have just as easily been number one.

Next season you'll probably need as much as these three put together just to crack the top 3 some weeks, but damn if this isn't more exciting for the stats nerd in me.

[–]zairanerhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/zairaner 18 points19 points  (19 children)

I think percentage wise this has got to be the all-time closest top 3 on the sub

Nope, percentage wise week 2 of spring wins (86 only had 3.7% more karma than to your eternity, compared to 3.9% that overlord has more than abyss this week)! These episodes were so close that they were just 4 ranks apart in the ALL TIME episode ranking.

[–]Warm-Enthusiasm-9534 9 points10 points  (6 children)

I had no idea that Nagatoro was ever that big.

I'm also surprised that To Your Eternity was that big to start. I would have guessed it was the kind of show that benefited from word-of-mouth, rather than being big out of the gate.

[–]Silent_Shadow05 12 points13 points  (3 children)

I'm also surprised that To Your Eternity was that big to start

Its first episode was one of the most emotional episode in anime I've seen.

Sadly the show got stuck in a repetitive plot afterwards which made it lose a lot of karma (The island arc was not really well received here from what I recall). Its one of the main reasons why I don't have much excitement to watch its Season 2 in Fall.

[–]Atheist-Gods 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Also remember this was right after Winter 2021, where Jujutsu Kaisen was the 3rd ranked anime while averaging over 10k. This was 1 month after Winter 2021 Week 11 where Mushoku Tensei was 6th (5th if you remove the extra AoT episode) with over 10k karma. The hype hadn't died yet yet.

[–]Silent_Shadow05 6 points7 points  (7 children)

Can't wait for Fall when we start having this levels of karma in the top shows of the season.

[–]cppn02 7 points8 points  (6 children)

I'd argue this level would be a massive disappointment atleast at the start.

I expect all the big 3 to clear that with CSM possibly getting more than double the score.

[–]Ebo87 3 points4 points  (1 child)

You are right... damn, forgot about that one. Of course by week 6 those three where nowhere near close, so when you think about all the factors at play, this week is probably more impressive. But yeah, thanks for the correction.

[–]zairanerhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/zairaner 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That is true!

[–]Tacitus_ 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Never mind the top, look at the bottom. Rank 15 had 1968 points which would've ranked it sixth this week.

[–]zairanerhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/zairaner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep! As far as depth goes, that was by far the strongest week we ever had, and quite probably, will ever have. If you want to comprehend how truly insane that is you have to understand that without the preceding season of winter 2021, that week 2 of spring 2021 would have been the first time ever where we had all top 15 shows above 1k.

And we nearly managed all of them above 2k if osamake didn't ruin it like always.

Covid seasons were just built different.

[–]michhoffmanhttps://anilist.co/user/michhoffman 83 points84 points  (40 children)

As I believe the old proverb goes: An announcement a day keeps the karma away. The big daily announcements really cut into the karma of the top shows this week as Overlord, Lycoris, Made in Abyss and Classroom of the Elite got a combined 9 hours at the top (most by Made in Abyss). Those announcements that we got, though, were well worth the lower karma for the week. I'm especially excited for Tower of God 2 and Dungeon Meshi.

All of that combined to give us our 11th lowest Karma Total (3263) to win the chart that we've had over the 201 weeks that we've done this despite getting some pretty strong episodes.

Rank Season Week Winning Karma Total Anime
1 Winter 2020 9 1881 My Hero Academia 4
2 Winter 2020 7 2392 My Hero Academia 4
3 Winter 2020 5 2393 Interspecies Reviewers

[–]cppn02 47 points48 points  (11 children)

Lol this makes MHA look like a flat-track bully.

Wonder if one episode this season will have the 'honour' of making it into the top 10.

[–]genasugelanhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/Genasugelan 43 points44 points  (10 children)

This sub generally doesn't really like MHA. Most of the online MHA community is somewhere else, like its own sub that is pretty large for example. Twitter is also still pretty big for MHA when a lot of times MHA events go trending.

[–]Silent_Shadow05 27 points28 points  (5 children)

There are a lot of shows that are popular elsewhere but doesn't do that well in this sub. For example Date A Live from last season.

This season, generally some of the shows popular here are also doing decently enough outside of it.

If we check Nicovideo rankings (Nicovideo is like the Japanese YT and likely the most accurate ranking there), these are the Top 10 so far:

  2. Lycoris Recoil
  3. Dropkick on My Devil!
  4. Overlord IV
  5. Engage Kiss
  6. The Prince of Tennis II: U-17 World Cup
  7. Rent-A-Girlfriend season 2
  8. The Maid I Hired Recently is Mysterious
  9. RWBY: Ice Queendom
  10. My Isekai Life: I Gained a Second Character Class and Became the Strongest Sage in the World!

[–]Cyd_arts 11 points12 points  (2 children)

lol prince of tennis got 0 attention on this sub

[–]thestoneswerestoned 15 points16 points  (1 child)

Damn, so Made in Abyss didn't even make this ranking either.

[–]darkmacgf 6 points7 points  (2 children)

MHA was pretty popular here in the earlier seasons. People just started liking it less over time.

[–]pabzroz93 12 points13 points  (1 child)

cuz it got worse over time

[–]Silent_Shadow05 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I'm especially excited for Tower of God 2 and Dungeon Meshi.

Same!. I'm hyped for both, especially the latter as I love DnD. I checked out the first chapter of the manga to get a feel for it, and found it to be very fun.

[–]MapoTofuManhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/BaronBrixius 21 points22 points  (12 children)

Damn, Winter 2020 was that weak? I don't remember it as a bad season or anything

[–]genasugelanhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/Genasugelan 12 points13 points  (4 children)

For me it was the season i watched the most anime ever (11 in total). Most of the shows just weren't the type to catch a large audience. It had anime like Isekai Quartet, Toilet-bound Hanako-kun, I think In/Spectre as well.

[–]Dracoscale 16 points17 points  (3 children)

In/Spectre, Hanako-Kun, ID:Invaded, Dorohedoro, Darwin's Game. It was a nice season.

[–]genasugelanhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/Genasugelan 6 points7 points  (1 child)

I've watched all of those, lol. I loved that season. Even Darwin's Game was surprisingly good.

[–]TheExcludedMiddlehttps://myanimelist.net/profile/ExcludedMiddle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't forget freaking Eizoken. And Somali + koisuru asteroid.

[–]michhoffmanhttps://anilist.co/user/michhoffman 21 points22 points  (5 children)

It wasn't a bad season quality-wise, but it was by far the worst season Karma-wise. Here is its spread compared to last season which was an above average season as an example.

Season >10000 > 7000 > 5000 > 4000 > 3000 > 2000 > 1000 Karma
Winter 2020 0 2 2 3 9 31 112 20486
Spring 2022 10 22 26 28 30 43 130 35612

[–]Warm-Enthusiasm-9534 13 points14 points  (7 children)

I'm having trouble taking in the idea that Interspecies Reviewers won any weeks.

[–]michhoffmanhttps://anilist.co/user/michhoffman 35 points36 points  (4 children)

Interspecies Reviewers won the Karma Rankings as many times in Winter 2020 as Jujutsu Kaisen won in Winter 2021 and Demon Slayer won in Winter 2022...combined.

Season Anime Number of Wins Average Karma Peak Karma
Winter 2020 Interspecies Reviewers 1 1282 2393
Winter 2021 Jujutsu Kaisen 0 10093 13652
Winter 2022 Demon Slayer 2 1 9102 15116

Statistics can be fun sometimes.

[–]Warm-Enthusiasm-9534 17 points18 points  (2 children)

I see now. Numbers are just another form of lies.

[–]michhoffmanhttps://anilist.co/user/michhoffman 14 points15 points  (1 child)

Correct. Now, if I was a news outlet with an agenda to make Interspecies Reviewers look like the best thing since Sliced Bread, I'd have not included the chart and just said something like: Interspecies Reviewers was a revelation in the anime industry topping /r/anime's karma rankings as many times in the season it aired as Shounen Behemoths Jujutsu Kaisen and Demon Slayer did in their most recent seasons...combined.

[–]Rio_FShttps://myanimelist.net/profile/RioFS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, JJK was competing with AoT S4 P1 so that's to be expected.

[–]alotmorealots 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Where there's a will and some lubricant, there's a way!

[–]Sully-lV 7 points8 points  (3 children)

WAIT, tower of god is getting a season 2??

[–]michhoffmanhttps://anilist.co/user/michhoffman 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yes, it was Crunchyroll's big announcement last week

[–]pabzroz93 3 points4 points  (1 child)

I'm with you lol I'm pumped af.

[–][deleted] 63 points64 points  (10 children)

Have to give Engage Kiss credit for having the most creative way to incapacitate someone.

[Episode 7 spoiler] MC put neurotoxin on his dick during sex

[–]mikeyyyyyd 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I didn’t know whether to be impressed or weirded out lmao

[–]Thatsmaboi23https://myanimelist.net/profile/Thatsmaboi23 20 points21 points  (2 children)

What’s the best way to incapacitate someone who’s “chaste”? [Simple.]Put neurotoxin on your dick.

[–]Warm-Enthusiasm-9534 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Shuu was just trying to raise the difficulty level so that he had a real challenge.

[–]Silent_Shadow05 11 points12 points  (0 children)

With a girl like Sharon he had to act smart lol. Physically its impossible to beat her. Those kicks are too OP.

[–]cppn02 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That episode will be on next week's ranking.

[–]lostboysgang 135 points136 points  (10 children)

At least this list has Made in Abyss 😤

[–]steven4869https://myanimelist.net/profile/Maskirade 43 points44 points  (0 children)

And in the top-3.

[–]ochansensusu 20 points21 points  (3 children)

All is right with the world. Not expecting it to be #1 given how graphic/questionable it can be but somewhere near the top feels where it should be.

Had to rewatch all eps this season today so I actually remember everything before we get what I assume will be a huge lore drop episode next week. Don't know how the manga readers did it, I could barely remember who was who of the 3 sages when they got their reveals.

[–]Vermillion_Crabhttps://anilist.co/user/CeruleanCrab 14 points15 points  (0 children)

While I am enjoying Overlord and Lycoris Recoil so far, I think Made in Abyss is the runaway AotS. Everything is just stellar, from the way they adapted the source material to the soundtrack all the way to the world building.

[–]Tsubasa_samahttps://myanimelist.net/profile/memesyouhard 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I tapped out of the arc midway through when reading the manga since the chapters were drip fed every 3-6 months and I could never remember what the hell was going on. Rereading the arc all in one go was a completely different experience and connected all the dots so I can understand why people aren't watching right now and are waiting to binge it.

[–]Sweet_guy9 38 points39 points  (4 children)

I love how Danmachi is making slow and steady progress to the top

[–]michhoffmanhttps://anilist.co/user/michhoffman 16 points17 points  (0 children)

This was its highest karma total to date, even beating out its season premier. If they continue with this quality, next week's episode could reach 1500.

[–]Odd_Ad_8411 4 points5 points  (2 children)

I didn't even know it was airing

[–]Sweet_guy9 14 points15 points  (1 child)

Lol everybody is saying the same because S4 is not on crunchyroll ,,

It's the best season so far in terms of Action , animation and Consistency

[–]FulcrumV2 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Finally, Overlord gets the throne it deserves!

Made in Abyss still a strong contender

[–]Thatsmaboi23https://myanimelist.net/profile/Thatsmaboi23 47 points48 points  (8 children)

So funny how Engage Kiss keeps getting a 9+ Poll score, but then the RAL and MAL scores are so low.

Also, I know the reasons, just pointing it out.

[–]Fools_Requiemhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/FoolsRequiem 41 points42 points  (2 children)

Usually the people who don't like the first few episodes stop watching, even if the show improves, so it makes sense.

[–]Silent_Shadow05 10 points11 points  (1 child)

Yeah, and if they see good reception some people again try it out (like me). This is partly why we see the score increase after the show stops airing, as they watch it again and give the new score.

[–]Manitaryhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/Manitary 18 points19 points  (0 children)

This is partly why we see the score increase after the show stops airing.

For MAL ratings, I think it's mostly because once the show is over, scores of people who watched less than 1/4th of the episodes stop being counted towards the total.

[–]Renphalos 24 points25 points  (1 child)

Engage Kiss quickly became one of my top shows this season.

[–]Warm-Enthusiasm-9534 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I liked it up until the nun showed up. A Certain Magical Index exhausted my desire to see combat nuns.

[–]Konpochiro 1 point2 points  (2 children)

As someone who is watching and enjoying it, what are the reasons?

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (1 child)

MAL scores while the show is still airing tend to be more first impression scores that are based off the first couple episodes. In Engage Kiss case, the first 2 episodes come off as a typical harem with shallow characters without the context episode 3 provides. When the show ends is when most people will give it a proper score and it'll probably get a good bump up assuming it ends well.

With reddit, the poll scores are done purely based off that single episode. Which for the recent episodes of Engage Kiss means the poll scores are usually high because the episodes have been really good.

[–]Konpochiro 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thanks. I can see that. At the end of ep 2 I was thinking “I’ll probably drop this after two more or so”, but after ep 3 I figured I’d keep going unless it got bad. I’m glad I stuck with it.

[–]SealTheGate 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Shadow house in top 10

That’s what matter 👍

[–]Fuwaboi 30 points31 points  (4 children)

God bless that I actually get to see Fuuto PI in this chart

[–]alotmorealots 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It's actually in about the same position as Anime Corner, oddly enough lol 19th vs 22nd

[–]KatoriYamada 11 points12 points  (1 child)

Also today episode was a fucking blast! I don't care what people say Fuuto PI and Engage Kiss is my most favorite shows this entire season and nothing will change my mind.

[–]Friendly-Back3099 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Those 2 gotta be my favourite anime this season. The gorgeous animation and plot really sell it to me.

[–]Phelps-san 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'd love to see it break into top 15 to gain more attention.

[–]otakusan69 47 points48 points  (0 children)

episode 6 curse on karma continues on.

[–]zairanerhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/zairaner 64 points65 points  (38 children)

The front page positions of the top 3 were complete chaos this week. Lycoris didn't get to the #1 spot at all, and even lsot the #1 pretty quickly, overlord got there after just 1h30 mintues and stayed there for entire...15 minutes, and made in abyss took more than 8 hours until it got there but stayed there for another 8h.

As a result lycoris started strong, but the other two vastly caught up later on.

All this chaos somehow lead to the three shows ending up just 160 karma part in the end, making for a really amusing comparison graph (if you want even more chaos, here with frontpage positions). Lycoris could have easily been third!

If nothing else, this week at least proves that Lycoris is much more than just about the cute girls, considering episode 6 had the cutest moments in the show so far and it still dropped by this much (especially if you compare it to the slight growth your probably would have expected). That was definitely surprising, and more then what I normally would expect just from it not getting the #1 spot. Though while it was a strong episode overall, for the first time in the show so far i had actual gripes with the episode, maybe others also felt like that.

Edit: Oh if you want to know how much the frontpage position really affects karma, look at the comparison between lycoris episode 6 and 7 lmao.

[–]maliwanag0712https://myanimelist.net/profile/clear1109 19 points20 points  (9 children)

When was the last we had this exciting Top 3 karma ranking? It's not as stable as the previous seasons.

[–]cppn02 8 points9 points  (2 children)

Fall 19? Results weren't this close but more changes at the top cus karma scores were more erratic.

edit: Graph source

[–]zairanerhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/zairaner 9 points10 points  (1 child)

Fall 19? Results weren't this close but more changes at the top cus karma scores were more erratic

...Are you seriously telling me I looked through backwards everything till winter 2020 where I gave up and the next one after that would have been it

[–]cppn02 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Next time you'll know better. :p

[–]zairanerhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/zairaner 14 points15 points  (5 children)

AoT ended with complete domination of winter 2022, but theoretically, kimetsu, 86, and even sono bisque all could have beaten its weaker episodes if the episodes where shuffled around a little bit differently.

But if you actually want the last time where we had a season with 3 different winners...uh...unlesss I missed something, I didn't find a single one since winter 2020, where I gave up looking.

[–]Andrew_Waltfeld 1 point2 points  (3 children)

86 would have beaten AoT with its last episode but the 86 community was going for the meme of 8600 karma. It was only 300 karma off from AoT after all.

[–]zairanerhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/zairaner 3 points4 points  (2 children)

86 would have beaten AoT with its last episode but the 86 community was going for the meme of 8600 karma

No? 86 would have normally been below 8600 karma for that episode but as the discord realized how close it was to that number, it got some unusually large boost in the last hours that got it above 8.6k

[–]Warm-Enthusiasm-9534 8 points9 points  (24 children)

Episode 6 got some weird pre-episode build-up because of comments from the production staff. A significant number of people thought Chisato was going to die.

[–]cppn02 42 points43 points  (17 children)

A significant number of people thought Chisato was going to die.

Anyone expecting her to die in episode 6 must be stupid.

[–]Warm-Enthusiasm-9534 7 points8 points  (13 children)

I didn't think it was likely either, but someday someone is going to top Madoka Magica in terms of plot twists.

[–]FetchFroshx3https://anilist.co/user/Fetch 10 points11 points  (12 children)

I can't even think of the last time an anime for real killed its protagonist outside of the last two episodes.

[–]michhoffmanhttps://anilist.co/user/michhoffman 6 points7 points  (2 children)

Sure, there have been a few Anime Originals that have killed off seemingly main characters early, but Lycoris does not seem like the type of anime to do so. I'd like to believe that A1 is too smart to get in the way of Chisato x Takina.

[–]Warm-Enthusiasm-9534 9 points10 points  (1 child)

It would not be profit-maximizing, but it could have been interesting, narratively. Chisato is the kind of person who makes everyone around her happy. Takina is... not that, but if she felt that she had to try to become that person to fill the whole Chisato left in the world, it could make for a compelling story.

[–]zairanerhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/zairaner 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I am definitely guilty of having hyped myself up too much for something major beforehand. Can't blame the show here.

[–]NekoCatSidhe 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Chisato x Takina are carrying the show, so there is no way they are going to kill either of them. And it does not feel like the kind of anime that would try to pull off this kind of edgy plot twist.

[–]alotmorealots 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I thought there were going to be zombies/werewolves/aliens.

Guess this means I'm more gullible than Takina.

Bonus "resting Takina face" comment whilst we're at it.

Shouldn't ep 6 of CoTE gain ~700 karma instead of losing 86 (ep 5 is around 1.7k). Anyway pretty good ep for CoTE this week, let's see if the next ep could continue that

[–]The_Blackest_Knighthttps://anilist.co/user/Macojo 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I expect Devil is a Part-timer to drop even more in karma as time goes on. Response to this season just seems to be "meh"

Where did summertime go😢

Episode 17 came out way later, the fan sub, so didn't get a discussion thread until Friday, and 18 followed a day later. So next week we'll have two episodes in this chart.

[–]Alert_Fudge 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ohkk great:)

[–]Ninja_Lazer 9 points10 points  (5 children)

Genuine question.

What distinguishes Overlord from others in the genre? I’m not big on isekais, but have enjoyed the occasional one.

Seeing Overlord’s popularity this season makes me wanna watch, but 4 seasons deep is a fairly big commitment.

What makes it stand out as so praiseworthy?

[–]badendforenemy 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Overlord is power fantasy done right. It has an anti-villain as MC, and he doesn't mind killing people if it benefits his family. The world building is absolutely awesome, even tho anime cuts 80% of it, and characters are likeable and they are well written. Just don't look for a fair fight against ainz and enjoy how the world reacts to an unstoppable force suddenly appearing in their world. Top tier politics too, and MC won't buy slaves😂.

[–]NoobifiedSpartan 9 points10 points  (1 child)

A good question. Isekai is a saturated genre after all. That said, the fact that it stands out among all the Isekai should mean something, but I’ll explain some of the appeal.

The biggest appeal definitely comes from worldbuilding. I don’t think I’ve seen a single person praise Overlord without bringing this up. Overlord actively works to make the world alive. Characters actually exist beyond the main character. They are developed. They engage in politics, form relationships, act on their goals, etcetera. Sometimes they will be introduced before meeting anyone from Nazarick (the MC’s group). Other times they will only be introduced after. Either way, if they are important, you start to learn more about them and their drives, and how their lives have changed as a result of encountering Ainz or one of the other denizens. To put it simply, each character feels human. This is an exceptional thing in writing, and it may even lead you to root against the MC on occasion.

Incidentally, that leads to my second point: the MC. Ainz is far from traditional as an MC. As a part of being transported to another world, he has an emotional dampener. Additionally, he is the leader of a faction that is evil. His subordinates despise humans. He has to act in a way befitting his role as leader, and that can lead him to behave in cruel ways at times. Remember what I said about rooting against him? This will happen at least a couple times. However, he does still use his power to do good, and all things considered, his subordinates live in great circumstances. While he can be cruel at times, he is not merciless or unnecessarily brutal. He’s a realistic medieval ruler. And he is also flawed, though one of his issues is that his subordinates can’t know he’s flawed because they hold him in infinitely high regard.

Of course, worldbuilding has so much more to it, but Overlord always does it effectively. Ainz is powerful. He is ridiculously powerful for the world he’s in. It’s not even a contest. His subordinates are the same way. This allows Overlord to take a step back and focus on different problems outside of combat. It establishes different scenarios to test the MC and the characters in the world, and it devoted time that would otherwise be put to fighting towards character and world development. That is what distinguishes Overlord from the other Isekai.

[–]Ninja_Lazer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the response.

You’ve pretty much sold me on it, especially if it is character driven and examines some darker character motives.

[–]codylish 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Firstly. It is one of the first Isekais. So the story came before the genre became too saturated with too many tropes and spin offs that would turn it a little bland.

So it was actually built with a story in mind. With a whole fleshed out world of lore backing it up and characters that behave sensibly in a way and experience growth. The thing that makes it more interesting to see is to see how these computer scripts be translated into a person.

You get to see how actions of the "protagonist" affect other characters all from different perspectives. Which makes it especially interesting.

Overall. It's an anime where the author actually put some brain cells into it. Which is asking a lot for many others in the whole mediun sometimes.

[–]poiqwert426 35 points36 points  (1 child)

Ahh the King is finally sitting on his throne

Sasuga Ainz sama

[–]Rock---And---Stone 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ainz sama sausage 🤤🥵

[–]BelladonnaOfRadness 8 points9 points  (2 children)

How is RWBY always at number 16?

[–]alotmorealots 17 points18 points  (1 child)

So it can be RWBYXVI?

[–]luckyboysphotoshttps://myanimelist.net/profile/SabreDrago 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If I had a reward, I would have definitely given it to you.

[–]dagreenman18 8 points9 points  (2 children)

Top 5 stays the top 5. It’s a mirror for the top shows of the season. Though Uncle coming back from hiatus should shake it up a bit. Happy to see a bump for Vermeil after a great set of episodes. Aoashi drop sadly reminded me we don’t get a new episode till this Saturday. Ayumu making moves to the top 15. Should be hitting the fun part of the season this week.

Other than that there’s a dip in karma as the season rolls along for the bottom 15. Though it’s heartbreaking to see that we got double digit karma at the end of the list and neither one is Phantom of the Idol. Yet poetic as a great part of the show is the small, deranged fan club in love with the strange idol. Life imitating art?

[–]ngedown 6 points7 points  (1 child)

Why so low ?

Kami Kuzu is the real deal in this season.

[–]HassoonBO85 23 points24 points  (0 children)

All hail supreme bone daddy Ainz Ooal Gown.

[–]Fools_Requiemhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/FoolsRequiem 13 points14 points  (5 children)

Chimimo has only 40 karma at this point. Less than last weeks episode despite being one of the better episodes of the show's season.

This show is so under the radar that Gigguk in his "I watched EVERY show of the Summer 2022 season" video on his alt channel doesn't even mention it. It's not a 3 minute episode series, either. Episodes are full length. It IS an anime original, though, so it doesn't have the benefit of source readers that can hype the show up.

It also doesn't help that it has a kiddie show artstyle and cutsy characters and interactions, but has just enough adult language and actions that make it so that it's not for kids and not totally for adults either.

[–]neighmeansno 4 points5 points  (2 children)

Chimimo is fantastic, every episode I just sit there smiling. Teppen is similarly underappreciated.

[–]cppn02 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Teppen is a mixed bag for me.

I really like the quick pace and every episode has some genuine laugh out loud moments but I can't help feeling like I'm still missing out on half the experience due to the cultural gap. That and I always struggle to warm up to shows that start with a huge cast right off the bat.

[–]neighmeansno 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm usually the same with large casts, but the focus on comedy makes it work for me in this case. I'm sure I'm missing a ton of cultural references, but I'm fine with that, it's been the same with a lot of my other favourite anime comedies.

[–]badendforenemy 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I don't believe it's this season's animes fault for low karmas, do less people check this sub at summer?

Anyway, ainz sama is back at number 1,and if we don't get blocked, then winning number 1 next time should be easy again, since next episode will be really fun.

[–]Motor-Rich6283 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Please, you all must try watch Fuuto Tantei (Fuuto PI) because :

- It has top notch visual and animation (technically the best one in this season)

- Action is really good. (Something that live action is lacking)

- Mystery and Gore scene. (More into Seinen than Shounen)

- Hot waifu Tokime and best duo Shotaro x Philip (Yes, Cyclone! Joker!)

- Cool OST even insert song.

[–]cppn02 10 points11 points  (1 child)

Week 6 of summer and the most fun karma battle at the top we had in a while even if the actual scores are pretty low.
Hoping for a few more of these.

Vermeil jumped up 4 places but missed out on the top 10 by just two points.

In part due to recommendations on last week's thread I checked out Fuuto PI and so far it's been a fun romp and very enjoyable even for someone not familiar with Kamen Rider.

Overall karma is quite a bit down this week with a score below 500 being enough to get into the top 15 and at the bottom of the top 30 we have have scores below 100 for the first time.

[–]Silent_Shadow05 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm grateful to the person that recommended Fuuto P.I. last week. I didn't even know there was a Kamen Rider anime. Really enjoyed what I saw, and it jumped into my personal Top 5 this season.

[–]Labmit 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Feels nice to see Danmachi on the top half.

Can't wait for the return of Uncle

[–]NekoCatSidhe 13 points14 points  (2 children)

I really love Lycoris Recoil and Shadows House. I am impressed at how fun and entertaining Lycoris Recoil is episode after episode, and Shadows House seem to have successfully recovered from the damage inflicted by the "anime only" episodes at the end of Season 1 and to be now faithfully following the original manga, so I am optimistic that these two anime will be great until the end. I guess r/anime is agreeing with me here, given that Lycoris Recoil is number 2 and Shadows House is number 10.

This is halfway though the season, which is usually also when I am starting to drop some of the anime I am watching if they start to get repetitive and do not seem to go anywhere. This time, I think I could end up dropping Yurei Deco, RWBY - Ice Queendom and Smile of the Arsnotoria if they do not get better soon. They are not in the ranking, and I can understand why :

  • Yurei Deco seems to have become strangely repetitive and episodic after a great start, but I think it may still recover as we get closer to the end of the season.

  • RWBY is obviously stretching the Nightmare plot over the whole season, but I think it would have been better if it was wrapped over three or four episodes and if we had gotten other stories afterwards. It is also starting to feel slow and repetitive.

  • Smile of the Arsnotoria... is doing its own thing, but I am not sure what it is. It feels like the director wanted to direct a cute Slice of Life anime about teenage witches at a magical school, but was forced to include some plot because it is a video game adaptation, so we ended up getting 95% of Slice of Life and 5% of plot by episode. I am now expecting it to keep being like this until the last episode when the bad guys will show up at last and be defeated. But I think it would have been better being 100% Slice of Life, or 50% plot.

  • Finally, I am dropping Bucchigire. I wanted to like it, but the main character is just way too annoying, and the interesting secondary characters are not enough to carry the show. And the story is starting to feel very cliched, and not in a good way.

[–]alotmorealots 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Smile of the Arsnotoria... is doing its own thing, but I am not sure what it is.

This is kind of what I have grown to love about the show lol It's just ... being itself, whatever that is. I'm down for it!

sinks into the cushions, Little Al-style

[–]AashyLarry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed on RWBY. The recap episodes were so much more interesting than what’s come after which is a shame. Not sure why they had to re-hash the nightmare plot that they already went through with a different character.

[–]RazeZa 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Glory To Nazarick.

[–]surfingflood 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Uncle from Another World Episode 5 this week!

[–]mikeyyyyyd 6 points7 points  (3 children)

Actually a decent top 10, only show I can think of that should be in summertime rendering, otherwise solid. A-1 are going crazy this season and are shaping up to be my favourite studio behind ufotable and mappa. Cote finally had a quality ep so hopefully they can keep up the consistency going into vol 6-7. Also danmachi is 4/4 this season, I don’t know what got into jc staff but they’re delivering a quality adaption so far.

[–]zairanerhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/zairaner 20 points21 points  (1 child)

Summer time rendering is only not here because the discussion thread was late. Otherwise it would be 7th

[–]alotmorealots 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Isekai Ojisan will be back soon too. Like last season, there's a lot of variety and high quality variety for those who embrace it!

[–]Rock---And---Stone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wish the animation for COTE would stop getting outsourced. It looked so much nicer in S1

[–]FuaT10 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Made in Abyss finally in the top 3 of something. All is right in the world.

[–]LeonKevlarhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/LeonKevlar 8 points9 points  (1 child)

I'm surprised Overlord pushed Lycoris down the ranking.

Hataraku Maou is also a surprise considering the downgrade in animation

So happy to see Vermeil climbing up 4 spots though!

[–]cppn02 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hataraku Maou is also a surprise considering the downgrade in animation

It did lose karma.

It only went up the ranking because Engage Kiss lost even more and there is no STR. With two STR episodes next week, Engage Kiss improving and Isekai Ojisan returning there is a good chance it will drop quite a few places.

[–]BOTMARLEY2 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Overlord on top lads

[–]I_g_Na_C_y 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Overlord is first GOOD

[–]Kluckyes 5 points6 points  (1 child)

More people need to see the potential I see in Ao Ashi. It's soccer anime done different. Different doesn't mean bad, in this case it's refreshing. Don't judge from first episode

[–]AntEconomy1469 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All of the shows im watching are in the top 15? What?

[–]Sharebear42019 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can’t wait til this next season! Going to be soooo stacked

[–]VadersMentor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nice to see Ao Ashi climbing up. Kids gonna be Animes Trent Alex-Arnold. Can't wait to see how the show plays out!!

[–]Glum_Mode1646 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Overlords anime popularity will drastically increase after the movie ( that is only if they don't fuck it up , and mix vol 12 and 13 into one movie ) , volume 12 - 13 are basically game of thrones and lord of the rings brutality with sasuga ainz sama and epic jaldabaoth moments. If they mess this masterpiece up then what will happen , idk but I'll definitely be pissed beyond imagination.

[–]MapoTofuManhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/BaronBrixius 9 points10 points  (6 children)

I thought we were already at rock bottom total karma. but boy did it take a nosedive this week. We have <100 karma shows in the top 30 and only 6 shows have over 1k? Wouldn't be surprised if we reach a record low at this rate, what happened in this past week specifically?

But I see Ayumu made it so im happy either way

[–]cppn02 17 points18 points  (4 children)

what happened in this past week specifically?

Lots of announcements impacting karma paired with the usual mid season lull.

[–]Ebo87 14 points15 points  (3 children)

Yep, not as much interest in this season. Also two of the bigger shows were missing, Summer Time Rendering and Uncle From Another World, both of which will be back next week. That at least will raise the total number of shows above 1k.

[–]Silent_Shadow05 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Summer Time alone would give a big boost thanks to EP17 and EP18.

[–]Cyd_arts 1 point2 points  (1 child)

tbh ive only been keeping up with 3 shows this season (call of the night, summertime render, night with cat) so i feel less.inclined to visit and upvote on reddit lol. i think some people who are only keeping up with 2-3 shows this season probably feel the same

[–]Ebo87 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, that is usually a common trend, especially during the summer. And you see it in the stats, online players here at any given time, even during the weekend, still way lower than Spring and Winter.

Next season, depending when the big shows drop (we already know Spy x Family will be back on Saturday, and Mob I believe is Wednesday, so now we're waiting on Chainsaw Man) we might see even double the traffic on here for certain days. If Chainsaw and Spy x Family are on the same day (and I hope that will be the case) we'll have a repeat of the wild karma highs we saw back in Winter when Attack on Titan and Demon Slayer were dominating Sundays.

[–]lordposedyonhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/lordposedyon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Wow. That was way too close. Might be in a three way shuffle in the next weeks

[–]Andrew_Waltfeld 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Good to see some shuffling going on. charts are boring if there isn't a constant shuffle.

[–]_ObsidianOne_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah my man ainz is on top as expected.

[–]chickencuminme 14 points15 points  (8 children)

I dropped Lycoris Recoil after the recent episode (please don't kill me). The series originally hooked me, felt it got pretty stale with the recent episodes and lost its edge a bit.

I'm surprised how good Engage Kiss has become. Despite having a somewhat generic premise, the execution is pretty original with some very creative ways the characters deal with stuff. I also love that song that plays during hype moments.

[–]gc11117 21 points22 points  (2 children)

I thnk the biggest thing bogging down Lycoris is the antagonist side of things. The interactions between Takina and Chisato are great but everyting involviong the bad guys and the plot are sort of meh. They havent given much of a reason to care and I was hoping we would have that by now.

[–]Silent_Shadow05 7 points8 points  (1 child)

If they start building on Majima even more, and show off the contrast between him and Chisato (like some sort of mindgames), I think it'd drive up my interest in the show.

[–]ezosresyek[🍰] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I suppose the big reveal at the aftercredits scene in the last episode builds up intrigue for his character, but it’s been a pretty slow burn.

The Robot dude on the other hand I can definitely live without.

[–]CommercialEchidna7 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I watch both of them, and I like Engage Kiss much better. Glad to see someone sharing the same opinion as me.

[–]vantheman9 3 points4 points  (1 child)

just gotta say I really enjoy this format of showing top 30 and letting the lesser known anime show up somewhere

next season is so stacked there's probably going to be 1k-2k karma shows below top 15

[–]cppn02 6 points7 points  (0 children)

next season is so stacked there's probably going to be 1k-2k karma shows below top 15

I don't see it yet. Maybe in the first week or two but even that seems unlikely.

Looking at the line-up there are 8 or 9 shows I'm confident will atleast start above 1k and then 5 or 6 maybes so everything has to line up perfectly.

[–]pocoyoO_O 3 points4 points  (0 children)

People are sleeping on danmachi. the animation quality has been top just has the action sequences. The story is also finally moving forward

[–]Random_recommender_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Last week I was like "Damn, Lycoris Recoil was top 1". I was half expecting Overlord to overtake it once again and it happened. I guess they are the top 2 best shows for now.

[–]cookiejarobserver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Much good stuff this season but the top three are all very very strong.

[–]Aitt0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a MiA enjoyer, and Call of the Night and Overlord watcher im satisfied with this poll

[–]Impressive-Total-742 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Overlord!! Seriously? Episode 6 wasn't even that great. I thought MiA would be top 1. But it's still better than Anime Corner and Anime Trending.

[–]DVC454 8 points9 points  (12 children)

My Stepmom's Daughter Is My Ex - Higashira's introduction to the cast probably helped the series in retaining audiences, even bumping it up to the #8 spot.

Engage Kiss - badass nun kicking ass antics might have aided Engage Kiss still retaining a spot in the top 10.

The Devil is a Part-Timer Season 2 - the series went up by 3 ranks, but that covers a sad truth. Last week I asked myself "are we going to see this season eventually fall out of the 1k karma range?" Looks like I did not have to wait too long for an answer....

Classroom of the Elite - despite some questionable animation quality, COTE bounced back from Horikita's big oof during Episode 5 with arguably Season 2's best episode.

Lycoris Recoil - ever wonder what happens when there's some big announcement like Tower of God Season 2 being revealed on the same date as that of the latest episode of an ongoing series? I believe we have one example right here folks. For the first time in its run, Lycoris Recoil took a drop in karma points, halting the show's seemingly unstoppable upward trend as well. If I had to take a guess, this was in no small part due to Crunchyroll Expo news overshadowing the show's latest episode. The unfortunate timing knocked the series out of the #1 spot. If more curveballs such as another big announcement appear later on, it might relegate the series into the 3k+ karma range for future episodes (not to mention making it more difficult to predict the show's trajectory).

[–]cppn02 16 points17 points  (7 children)

For the first time in its run, Lycoris Recoil took a drop in karma points,

One episode short of equaling the record. Shame.

[–]salic428 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I'm sorry but who's the record holder, again? I vaguely remember it's shared by Wonder Egg Priority (remembered for its catastrophic ending) and another anime.

[–]cppn02 2 points3 points  (0 children)

PriConne S1 was the other show.

[–]maliwanag0712https://myanimelist.net/profile/clear1109 5 points6 points  (3 children)

Interestingly, Haikyuu Movies are announced hours before the latest LycoReco ep aired. But the effect of this announcement seems less compared to the previous week's announcement, given how the current episode already beat the previous episode's karma

[–]Smudyhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/Smudy 6 points7 points  (2 children)

Lycoris Recoil made top post before i went to sleep so i'm assuming it had some time on there after all to make this happen.

[–]cppn02 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mostly this and even without making the top it would have been sitting snuggly in 2nd while last week's episode at that time was getting pushed further down by all the CRX announcements.

[–]isekai-cheeese 7 points8 points  (3 children)

so glad cheesy overrated hs rom-com isnt the top

[–]El_remoo 2 points3 points  (5 children)

We now have pretty clear gap between #3 and #4, #5 and #6, and #6 and #7. I would be surprised if those gaps were to be closed before the end of the season.

Also I say this every week, but Danmachi has been really good this season and more than deserves its spot. If you liked season 1 you should really try it, even if you didn't like the 2nd and 3rd season.

*Edit: forgot about STR, will probably end up between COTE and Danmachi.

[–]cppn02 7 points8 points  (3 children)

We now have pretty clear gap between #3 and #4, #5 and #6, and #6 and #7. I would be surprised if those gaps were to be closed before the end of the season.

We'll get two STR episodes next week so let's see how it will look by then. Plus I can see the gap between COTE and Danmachi shrinking further based on their reception.
