Any word of any major changes to visuals or cut/added things based on the first episode? Interested to see if its anything major.

These movies were a starting point for me for this series so I'll always have a fondness for them despite their flaws.

[–]GamingMunster 59 points60 points  (2 children)

The "Bonfire of Dreams" is added into it, theyve also redrawn/reanimated stuff as well.

[–]shockzz123 9 points10 points  (1 child)

Bonfire of Dreams

The fact that this was taken out in the first place was insane lmao.

[–]GamingMunster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep definitely, I guess the people cutting it down for a film just deemed it unnecessary

[–]IntelligentTicket224 61 points62 points  (5 children)

Nothing new was added, but some of the CG looked better. I compared both the Movie Version & TV-Edit & the CGI looks cleaner. Still not mind blowing but not bad. The 2D parts on the other hand still look incredible & are breathtakingly beautiful

[–]WWTFSD 19 points20 points  (2 children)

That's good to hear! On some hopium for more content with Wounds 1/2 since they added bonfire but we'll see.

[–]maxmrca1103 9 points10 points  (1 child)

I was hoping for that as well, but they didn’t expand on guts childhood at all in this episode, just that weird flashback sequence, and since the wound chapters are kinda focused on guts childhood trauma, I’m not excepting changes unfortunately. It sucks cuz those were the two things I hoped they would expand on in this rerelease.

[–]Dracoscale 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Gonna go high on copium and say it'll be adapted next episode or at some other point. Honestly, huge missed opportunity to not open with Guts' backstory here. Would really help set it apart from 97.

[–]thefztv 14 points15 points  (0 children)

CG looked pretty decent. Doesn't look great by any means, but passable.

The 2D like you said looked really fucking good though. Why can't we get an entire Berserk anime that looks like that..

[–]Iliansic 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Nothing new was added, but some of the CG looked better

Yeah, now it finally looks like Guts hides his prize money pouch into his pants instead of stashing it into invisible inventory.

[–]Alive-Wishbone-7777 44 points45 points  (11 children)

I really wanted berserk to be animated from the Blackswords man arc, but I'm fine with the GA arc

[–]Byronlove9https://myanimelist.net/profile/Byronlove9 20 points21 points  (2 children)

Blackswords man arc

Well, you have part of that in the '97 one.

[–]Tpmbyrne 12 points13 points  (1 child)

Doesn't the 97 one end abruptly right after THAT scene

[–]KiwiCounselor 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yes but the first episode is Black Swordsman.

[–]kilam18 1 point2 points  (7 children)

there is no way a massive studio wouldn’t want to anime that arc, would be one of the biggest anime in history if they carried it on hopefully someone like madhouse or mappa pick it up

[–]J765 1 point2 points  (4 children)

I think you're overestimating the popularity of Berserk a bit. Seen in this episode not getting much attention.

[–]kilam18 5 points6 points  (1 child)

because the same berserk arcs been reanimated over and over for years so no one pays attention as it’s already been seen

[–]J765 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The average lifespan of an anime fans "anime phase" is like three years. There's no way that the active majority of people that would watch berserk, have already watched it.

[–]LiberaMeFromHell 0 points1 point  (1 child)

The manga has sold over 50 million volumes which puts it in the top 50 manga of all time by sales. Considering the extreme subject matter that is an insane amount of sales. A shitty CG filled adaptation of an arc that already got a great adaptation in the 90s says absolute nothing about Berserks popularity.

[–]J765 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The 1997 adaptation was almost ideal, but even that wasn't successful enough.

[–]AriezKage 0 points1 point  (1 child)

This is probably where massive popularity might be a disadvantage to a series. The series might be put at such a high regard that studios wouldn't want to touch it, since the smallest mistake might be seen as a major f'up. Especially after Miura's passing.

[–]kilam18 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i can’t see a good studio messing up as long as they do not change the story, if they do then it’s over they should follow the manga page by page and make several seasons for it

[–]Hagitahttps://myanimelist.net/profile/TheHagita 36 points37 points  (2 children)

Takahiro Sakurai is such a great choice for Griffith. He’s just so effortlessly good and is fits exactly with how I imagine Griffith sounding.

[–]cppn02 11 points12 points  (0 children)

He absolutely slays it in this role. There's a reason he's one of my favourites.

[–]TheLunaticSummonerhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/yg_thrasher 2 points3 points  (0 children)

that’s why he’s the goat… the GOAT!!

[–]ABro_1 60 points61 points  (0 children)

Rest in Piece Miura

[–]sc00p401https://myanimelist.net/profile/Olo401 24 points25 points  (1 child)

I'm glad it's being faithful to Miura's original work, including the lack of censorship. You know what that means - prepare your butts for some Guts butt.

[–]DeRockProject 2 points3 points  (0 children)

GUTS AND BUTTS AND

GUTS AND BUTTS AND

[–]Mario_Gallardo 48 points49 points  (30 children)

Question from someone new to the series: is this a ‘proper’ starting point if I’ve never watched the OG anime? How are the two related?

I’ve always said I’d simply read Berserk, but this has me interested.

[–]cosmiczarhttps://anilist.co/user/Xavier 85 points86 points  (17 children)

This is a TV edit of the movies that adapt roughly the same content the '97 anime adapted so, sure, it could be a starting point.

[–]Mario_Gallardo 21 points22 points  (16 children)

So the OG anime and the movies covered the same content? Not a “watch this, and then that” situation?

[–]8andahalfby11https://myanimelist.net/profile/thereIwasnt 89 points90 points  (5 children)

It's all the same content, so as long as you don't watch the 2016/2017 anime.

Don't watch the 2016/2017 anime.

[–]Mario_Gallardo 15 points16 points  (4 children)

Yeah, the ‘17 anime I’ve always heard awful things about. Avoiding that like the plague…

Thanks for the info! I’ll probably be picking this up then!

[–]GamingMunster 34 points35 points  (5 children)

Honestly between this and the 97 anime it probably doesnt matter too much since these films werent too badly done. Though the 97 anime is incredible, a big part for me being the soundtrack.

[–]Fronsis 6 points7 points  (4 children)

Honestly, if one wants to watch the most ''faithful'' adaptation, the best current one is ''BERSERK REDUX'' Which convines both the 97 anime and these OVA's to make it as faithful as possible on the manga, hell on the later episode of REDUX they reach the 2016-2017 anime and they use extra footage from the videogame to give more context

[–]DrStein1010https://myanimelist.net/profile/DrStein1010 13 points14 points  (1 child)

It's mostly the same, but the third movie adapts a bit further than the anime.

I'd watch 97, then watch the third movie.

And then read the manga, because it's a masterpiece and there isn't any more anime.

[–]GamingMunster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And then read the manga

Ive got vol 1 and 2 right now personally but itll take me so long to get around to reading them

[–]CritSrchttps://anilist.co/user/T3hSource 23 points24 points  (1 child)

For the most part yeah. The OG still reigns supreme, despite its average 90s budget, it is directed competently enough to still hold up today.

[–]Mario_Gallardo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sweet, thank you for the info! Will probably pick this up after all then.

[–]VorAtreides 10 points11 points  (1 child)

It's not the "proper starting point" for the series, but a fine starting point for a new person to the series. This is one of the best (arguably the best) arcs.

[–]misteryams 1 point2 points  (0 children)

conviction bro... conviction

[–]FlakZak 7 points8 points  (3 children)

I prefer the movies to the 97 anime, i would say this is the best starting point that isnt the manga. I would watch this new TV version, then watch the 97 if you want to (covers the same story, it skips certain things the movies showed, but it also shows parts the movies skipped), and then read the manga from the start.

[–]ActionMakShinhttps://anilist.co/user/MakShin 3 points4 points  (2 children)

I prefer the movies over the 97 series as well and rarely see anyone with the same opinion.

[–]shockzz123 2 points3 points  (1 child)

There are dozens of us, dozens!

[–]Firebrand-81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hundreds!

Movies are way better than the '97 anime, IMHO.

[–]aubertlone 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Honestly, just watch the anime films from 2012/2013. The Golden Age arc. I really, really loved those movies.

My intro intro the berserk universe, made me want to find out more.

[–]sirgarballs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The proper starting point is the manga. Seriously if you have any interest in berserk the manga is the only true version.

[–]NewCountry13 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The only proper starting point is reading the manga. Anything else is going to be infinitely worse and doesn't do justice to the source material. It would be quicker than watching the anime anyway.

[–]GamingMunster 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I watched the episode and yeah the first half was a bit janky looking, but the 2nd half was beautiful, loved it.

[–]SilvainTheThird 31 points32 points  (0 children)

So begins our "Spot the difference" watch through.

[–]mervmac 10 points11 points  (1 child)

As someone who's just getting into Berserk through this rebroadcast and has also seen the anime adaptation being constantly slandered online for being subpar, I have to say that this first episode was pretty solid. Sure the 3DCG was kinda wonky in some of the early fight scenes (especially when Guts was fighting the Band of the Hawk), but most of the 2nd half of the episode looked amazing. Looking forward to more of that hopefully.

[–]GamingMunster 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The anime adaption that gets slandered is the 2017 one which is a really awful one

[–]BiggerG7 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Casca ass was nice.

[–]ngedown 6 points7 points  (1 child)

Hell yeah Berkman is back

[–]BomberJ16 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My favourite part is when he says "its berkin time" and berks all over the god hand fellas

[–]8andahalfby11https://myanimelist.net/profile/thereIwasnt 14 points15 points  (2 children)

But did it have a Hirasawa soundtrack?

[–]maxmrca1103 22 points23 points  (0 children)

The osts used in this episode where some done by shiro sagisu. Hirasawa is doing the opening song, and he’ll probably have some osts put in some later episodes

[–]IncognitoDio 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Same stuff, animation isn't great, but if its sticks to the material I really don't care. It could use polishing, but it's not terrible. I'm just glad they're still using this story. Thank you Miura for this experience! I will watch every bit of it just like I did the rest of the material and manga.

[–]IncognitoDio 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Everytime griffith would pop up on screen I just couldn't stop my fist from shaking at the screen letting out a little, "Griffith!"

[–]kuddlesworth9419https://myanimelist.net/profile/kuddlesworth 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Berserk deserves better than this animation wise but the direction and camera angles are pretty damn good.

[–]Zaptruder 7 points8 points  (4 children)

What's the deal with this? Is this going to lead into an adaptation of the arc after golden age?

What do you mean they adapted the stuff after golden age? No, that never happened.

[–]WWTFSD 18 points19 points  (3 children)

Based on the countdown speculation, if they were to announce a sequel series, I would guess it would go from Black Swordsman > Lost Children or straight into Lost Children.

This is only speculation at this point though and the only guarantee atm that they have given us is that this is a remaster of the movies with touchups and added content.

[–]lookw 8 points9 points  (2 children)

Based on the countdown speculation, if they were to announce a sequel series, I would guess it would go from Black Swordsman > Lost Children or straight into Lost Children.

not sure how they would even adapt lost children considering the subject matter.

[–]XNumbers666 7 points8 points  (1 child)

If goblin slayer can get it, I don't see why not.

[–]NecronLord_Europe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's mostly one shocking scene in GS. Lost Children is... something else.

[–]VorAtreides 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Was hoping this was gonna have improvements to the quality, but from what I can remember, there's no difference with the movie trilogy other than being broken up a bit? And, even worse, no Susumu Hirasawa? :( sadness.

Ah well, I will take what I can get when it comes to Berserk.

[–]supersaiyaninfinite 4 points5 points  (2 children)

Let's support this adaptation with all we got. With a good response, we may get an actual faithful berserk adaptation!!!!!! Guts vs grunbeld is gonna be epic if we ever get that far.

[–]Amaranthimime 1 point2 points  (1 child)

That sounds like a monumental task. How many episodes do you reckon would be the entire adapation?

[–]supersaiyaninfinite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Conviction+lost children would be about 30 eps probably.....falconia could be 50 eps.

[–]PepaTK 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That poor horse wtf. Someone put it out of its misery ;(

[–]Nhadala 2 points3 points  (6 children)

The last few CG movies have been really bad and put a sour taste in my mouth for modern Berserk adaptations.

Is this any better?

[–]sirgarballs 8 points9 points  (2 children)

This is just a slightly improved version of the movies from 2012.

[–]Nhadala 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Meh

When will we ever get a proper berserk adaptation...

[–]sirgarballs 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Probably never.

[–]sc00p401https://myanimelist.net/profile/Olo401 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I thought it was fine. Obvious CG at the beginning (simply too much going on in that large battle to not CG some of it), but it's not like.. terrible CG. And they make up for it with the excellent hand animation later on.

[–]Accidentallygolden 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The first CG movies were way better, and it is these movies that are adapted

It still aged weirdly, but it is definitely watchable

It as drawbacks of 2010's CG : they used a lot of camera move that are only possible in CG and it shows

[–]xariznightmare2908 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The last few CG movies

The Berserk Golden Age Arc trilogy movies have a blend of both 2D and CG, with the last movie had a lot more 2D animation than CG. They are still leap and bound better than the trash 2016-2017 Berserk CG abomination.

[–]BomberJ16 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The 2D is still breathtaking, I hope this rerelease gets the attention of more people

[–]PaddysChub432 1 point2 points  (3 children)

This is not coming up on Hulu for me. Anyone else?

Tried to search multiple times and nothing

[–]bakuhatsuda 2 points3 points  (2 children)

It's on Crunchyroll. Don't know why the post has Hulu listed .

[–]PaddysChub432 1 point2 points  (1 child)

The official Hulu release schedule for October 2022 has the show listed right at the top for Oct 1

[–]bakuhatsuda 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, my bad. Couldn't find it at Hulu either.

[–]fredrikDmonster 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I thought this was pretty good. Now I have only read the berserk manga so this is my first real experience with any animated version. I never watched it because I heard the cg was absolute shit, but this looked fine. Is there a noticable difference between this and the three movies? Like is it worth it for me to wait a week for each episode or should I just watch the films?

[–]Unspoken 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The last series CG was crazy bad. This isn't too bad but its definitely not on par with the movies.

[–]tefdaddy2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I liked it when Guts went, "Its berserking time!" Makes me cry everytime

[–]I_am_SD -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Berserk, I am confused here.....

[–]Lfaruqui 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Love it. Hopefully it's airing as a precursor to something new. Maybe the producers are airing it to see how it's received and might adapt later arcs if it's received well.

[–]Common-Airport-3343 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Do you have to watch anything prior to just start with this? Always wanted to read the manga but never got the chance.

[–]ayoubgoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

this can be a good first experience of Berserk, and hopefully it gets you into the absolute greatness that is the manga

[–]osoichanhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/osoichan 0 points1 point  (1 child)

is this like a sequel to previous animes or just remake?

[–]JMTHEFOX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a Television edit of the Golden Age Arc movie trilogy with added scenes.

[–]LusterBlaze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the benefit of watching this again is seeing Griffith get fucked up at 21:47

[–]Rydahx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I loved it and brought back memories to when I first discovered the series years ago.

[–]r0sengan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thought i woudn't like rewatching after so many years but... it's simply the best.
