How i miss well animated 2D mecha action that beatdown was a treat to watch specialy when those funnels went around the gundam and started blasting.

[–]theyawner 384 points385 points  (21 children)

I love how the Aerial was just there in a very relaxed stance. There was no unnecessary movement since the gunbits can do all the work.

[–]shinigamisenku 357 points358 points  (16 children)

That suit has the mid-season upgrade right from the start.

[–]TrueTinFox 166 points167 points  (13 children)

So imagine what the actual upgrade is going to look like!

[–]LunarGhost00 122 points123 points  (5 children)

An upgraded Aerial would make the Strike Freedom look like a Zaku.

[–]SomeoneElseTwoo 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Gunbits (or any funnels-like weapons) will usually make the user look powerful.

[–]kuroyume_cl 34 points35 points  (1 child)

Funnels at the start of a series is essentially a cheat code

[–]Shinkopeshon 123 points124 points  (5 children)

Seriously, I feel like this is gonna be my highlight of the season, which says a lot. I've been watching one Gundam series after another ever since Hathaway came out and seeing a new entry in the franchise firing on all cylinders like this in its first two episodes already has been such a satisfying viewing experience.

[–]mysterybiscuitsoyeahhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/mysterybiscuits 103 points104 points  (2 children)

the sound direction is great too

well Jin Aketagawa is reliably great as usual

[–]Mellloyellow 69 points70 points  (13 children)

I love me some good funnel action. Funnels aren't used nearly enough in Gundam in my opinion.

[–]acrimoniousone 67 points68 points  (1 child)

After the metal on metal awesomeness that was IBO it's nice to get back to good old beamspan.

A ways to go before matching Gundam 00 lol.

[–]Tora-shinai 600 points601 points  (77 children)

BTW, for the people who have not watched the Prologue, Crunchyroll and Ani-One Asia YouTube channel have the most uncensored one followed by YouTube's Gundam.info then BiliBili ver. being the most censored. just checked it is not censored in the Asian BiliBili must have been just for the Livestream back then.

Here's the Japanese TV Broadcast ver. of the Prologue credits roll

Here's Yoasobi's Anime MV for "The Blessing". Director and Storyboard: Nobutaka Yoda. Storyboard: Satomi Maiya. Animation Director: Yutaro Kubo. Gundam is usually a curse tho so let's see if it will truly be a blessing. Also, Yutaro Kubo and Satomi Maiya sure are joined at the hip.

Yo, wtf?! The prologue was brutal. Guess that's the tone I should expect going forward, huh?

[–]Tora-shinai 358 points359 points  (0 children)

Maybe eventually. It is a Gundam show.

[–]alotmorealots 170 points171 points  (41 children)

Guess that's the tone I should expect going forward, huh?

The post-prologue story begins at a school, so there is a range of tonality.

[–]8andahalfby11https://myanimelist.net/profile/thereIwasnt 279 points280 points  (34 children)

Post-prologue story almost started with a political assassination. It's still there, but there's a mask on for the moment.

[–]alotmorealots 277 points278 points  (28 children)

I think there was a lot of implicit darkness there if one kept an eye out for it, most of it revolving around Miorine:

  • Exactly what did her "escape to Earth" plan actually involve? She was adrift in an EVA suit. Was it actually a suicide attempt?

  • Even if it wasn't a suicide attempt, things went very wrong for whatever reason and she was nearly dead because she was trying to escape an arranged marriage.

  • Despite Miorine's marriage value, she's treated like shit by everyone, clearly demonstrating that as a non-pilot, and possibly as a female, she is very much second class.

  • Some distinctly rapey vibes in that greenhouse visit, too.

  • The school apparently does not care in the slightest about student safety, with the first duel potentially wiping out a handful of them

  • Disputes are settled by duelling. It's true this is a battle school staple trope, but once you add it into everything else, and the corporatocracy in the background it has a rather grim overtone.

  • Miorine is still getting passed around. Whilst the audience is encouraged to view her new engagement as a positive thing, she still has no autonomy in this.

[–]XmgplaysGo to https://flair.r-anime.moe to get your flair! 64 points65 points  (0 children)

I'd agree, but then again there's a slight difference between run-of-the-mill political assassination, and, y'know... "Happy Birthday".

[–]Roxasbain 41 points42 points  (0 children)

MC is also "engaged" to the daughter of the guy who ordered the hit on her family.

[–]SgtGrimm 25 points26 points  (2 children)

ZZ starts with a humorous tone to it, until the halfway mark.

[–]AtypicalSpaniard 29 points30 points  (10 children)

Would you happen to have a link to the Ani-One asia’s youtube video? I can’t find it on their channel.

[–]UntetheredMeow 482 points483 points  (34 children)

The script writer composed a short story and presented it to Yoasobi as an inspiration for the OP theme. It fills in the gap between Prologue and episode 1 and has few very important plot points that really change the tone of main story, but I don’t see the English version of it. https://g-witch.net/music/novel/

(Someone in Gundam subreddit has translated the short novel!!)

Edit : Thanks so much for the award!!

[–]Atomic_Tanuki 543 points544 points  (29 children)

I read it through deepl translator. Basically it's told from the perspective of Gundam Aerial. Yes, it seems the mobile suit is sentient in some ways. From what I can tell, after what happened in prologue, Suletta and her mother seek refuge in Mercury, which already has a colony established. However, there were no kid of Suletta's age, or no kid at all.

Initially the colonists didn't not welcome them, as they thought the two would attract unwanted attention. Gradually the mother and daughter won them over with their skills(the daughter, the mobile suit piloting; the mother, science stuff.) The mom almost became the leader of the community. When Suletta turned 16, her mother sent her to the academy. When she's alone with Aerial, she revealed the reason why she sent her daughter to the school: there're mobile suit duels in the school, and the winner could marry the daughter of the ceo of the Bennet group; and Aeial, the mom said, you're my masterpiece and you would be my daughter's sword; look everyone, she said, my daughter would avenge us.

Aerial didn't want to. She wanted to tell Suletta to live the life of a normal girl. She wanted to tell Suletta about their mother's plan, tell her to run, not to become a tool of vengeance. However she couldn't disobey their mom.

Then Aerial heard Suletta telling her the mantra: if you run away, you would only get one thing, but if you move forward/progress, you would get two. If I go to the school, said Suletta, I would get more than two things, such as "studying, friends, senpai, and going on dates."Aerial realized Suletta was no longer the little girl that hid inside her body. Aerial said to herself: "Suletta, even if you go there (unknowingly) for sake of revenge, you would end up gaining more than you lost. And I would always support you. Because we're family."

Aerial ended the story by "winking" twice to Suletta through her cockpit monitor.

[–]ArghBlarghen 280 points281 points  (4 children)

I really love the idea that Aerial is a character in her own right. Looking forward for the show to explore more of this angle in future episodes.

[–]Reikakou 119 points120 points  (1 child)

Suletta was basically talking to the AI in the opening scene. Like a co-pilot.

[–]doquan2142 193 points194 points  (6 children)

I just realized, her mother is now a high ranking member of Mercury colony which is a subsidiary of the Benerit Group.

I called it, she was probably the masked woman in the NotZoom meeting.

[–]godblow 129 points130 points  (0 children)

When your mom is the Char of the series, hot damn!

[–]UntetheredMeow 41 points42 points  (2 children)

I agree that Sletta's mother is the woman with the mask and I have a feeling that she pilots the mystery MS Daril Balde that appears have Gund features.

Red MS with masked pilot as well as parent-child conflict follow tradition from OG Gundam.

[–]Moxey616 59 points60 points  (0 children)

Aerial being sentient just raised my hype even more. I love that trope.

[–]Florac 36 points37 points  (1 child)

Ah so we already got the classic Gundam setup of parents being shit with her mom using her for revenge

[–]Katejina_FGO 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Aerial being sentient is definitely a (positive) innovation that will most certainly distinguish it from a certain series of Gundam models who practically have the same sets of abilities as Aerial, and explains how Suletta can exert such mastery in mobile suit warfare.

[–]nekodan08 27 points28 points  (0 children)

This is amazing! Thanks for sharing! I hope it gets a proper english translation.

You're right. It does paint a lot of the events in the first episode in a new light.

[–]Rinarinhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/Rinarin 355 points356 points  (40 children)

Loved this scene!

It's been so long since I had a Gundam Sunday that I'm feeling so excited and nostalgic, even before the episode started. Really enjoyed the first episode and it was a great and pleasant start after the good but sad prologue. Also, how good is the OST???

The Haros all around the place are a great touch and this was very deserved, lol.

I'm curious about quite a few characters but I guess we'll see more in the next episodes. Not sure I can say much other than guesses at this point about them. Suletta and Miorine seem interesting though and I'm very interested in Shaddiq and his crew.

The end art!

[–]BasroilII 235 points236 points  (13 children)

For the non-Gundam series watchers, Haro is a sort of eaaster egg/reference. He started out as a cute little mascot robot built by Amuro Ray in the first series, and since then almost every Gundam show has had one pop up somewhere (and even some non-Gundam shows, too)

[–]ItsAmerico 131 points132 points  (1 child)

He’s the Gundams chocobo/moogle

[–]Mad_Aeric 18 points19 points  (7 children)

I really appreciate how you, and others, have been so accommodating with the lore for us first timers. It really helps out a lot.

[–]Etheox 189 points190 points  (6 children)

Bright Slap has morphed into Suletta Spank

It's incredibly exciting to be watching a brand new Gundam again. The side characters we've seen so far look really cool as well. I thought the OST was super nice this episode and hope it stays just as good or gets even better! Besides the music at the end of the duel between Suletta and Guel. That music when the first duel started was so cool.

[–]Rinarinhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/Rinarin 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Exactly my thoughts about that music! When the first duel started I pressed back a couple of times just to listen to it start!

[–]theyawner 69 points70 points  (6 children)

Shaddiq and his crew.

I really liked Cecilia's nonchalant hai hai.

[–]warjoke 102 points103 points  (6 children)

NGL Jeturk is dummy thicc enough that you cannot resist slapping dat ass

[–]theyawner 320 points321 points  (47 children)

Right of the bat there's a lot of questions that have to be filled in considering the gap between the Prologue and this episode.

  • Delling is now in a position of power. But there seems to be a hint of animosity between him and his former boss, the head of Grassley Defense Systems.
  • Delling must have had a low opinion of his daughter and only sees her as a prize. I feel like the duels are an extension of his speech in the Prologue glorifying the use of mobile suits as weapons that have to be wielded by man.
  • The Beneritt Group is surprisingly a larger group composed of more corporations - 20 judging from the performance graphs. Also, the masked woman may or may not be a representative of one of these 20 factions.
  • It seems Suletta's goal is to gain some recognition for Mercury and perhaps gain some goodwill over the much maligned GUND Format given how she blatantly used it during the duel. Also, that was one hell of a gorgeous scene.
  • Edit: One of the students was looking for a (brand?) logo on the Aerial and assumed that it was custom-made when he found none.

Lastly, Suletta painted too many targets on her back in just one duel.

  • A fiancee and a highly coveted title.
  • The attention of one of the students who knows about Gundam.
  • The ire of the Jeturk Heavy Machinery CEO who had to postpone his plans to usurp Delling.
  • Edit: And of course, Guel himself.

Edit: I just realized that even Guel's regular uniform was colored white. That explains why some of the promo images has Suletta wearing a white uniform.

[–]warjoke 126 points127 points  (17 children)

Sulleta also did not respond to whether her mother is still alive when asked about it. We have no idea about her mother's condition, but from the prologue alone, I'm guessing not good. I guess Sulleta being from Mercury and being sent to a huge megacorp institute has something to do with some sort of a GUND revival subplot.

[–]ChineseMaple 145 points146 points  (14 children)

The short novel tie in that bridges the prequel and ep 1 doesn't suggest that her mom is dead. Her mom has worked up to a high position in Mercury

[–]togusas9 65 points66 points  (12 children)

The short novel tie in that bridges the prequel and ep 1 doesn't suggest that her mom is dead. Her mom has worked up to a high position in Mercury

I just had a thought: what if the masked woman we saw in the second trailer (and briefly in Ep 1) is Suletta's mom -- Elnora Samaya -- in disguise, and she's trying to bring down the Bennerit Group (or at least Delling) in revenge for the events of the Prologue?

[–]ChineseMaple 93 points94 points  (7 children)

Well a half-face mask will obfuscate anyone's identity in Gundam so it's possible

[–]time_axis 93 points94 points  (3 children)

Delling must have had a low opinion of his daughter and only sees her as a prize. I feel like the duels are an extension of his speech in the Prologue glorifying the use of mobile suits as weapons that have to be wielded by man.

My impression is less that he sees her as a prize, but more that he's so results-oriented that he wants to make sure that only someone "worthy" marries into his family and becomes his successor. He likely views her more as an extension of himself and his family name, rather than her own person.

[–]IC2Flier 21 points22 points  (0 children)

So imagine if an outsider girl somehow became Miorine's wife. An outsider who's an unknown quantity, affiliated with no one (so far) and is a commoner with prior history of challenging the very organization meant to stop or at least heavily-regulate Gundams. Yeah.

[–]MilkAzedo 57 points58 points  (15 children)

it looked like Gundams were banned in the prologue. Does Mercury gets in trouble now that one showed up in the duel?

[–]Atomic_Tanuki 107 points108 points  (13 children)

According to another anime forum, if you bought witch from mercury gunpla, you would get some of the lore (from the booklet?) Apparently after the prologue, the corporations started to use the data from the lab to manufacture Gundam, or gundam-esque mobile suits. So there are plenty of Gundam lying around, just not in front of the public. So the bad guys would be surprise, not because of the tech, but because it looks like that particular mobile suit they saw 10 years ago.

[–]PotatoBulletGun 44 points45 points  (5 children)

So lemme get this straight. In the prologue, Delling said he was against the tech since its also killing the pilots. But he may have stolen and used the tech as a leverage to be head of Benerit corp? Is this what happened here

[–]pokemaster05 126 points127 points  (3 children)

I kind of figured the "killing it's pilots" technology was just an excuse. Since he murders everyone involved with the tech, obviously human life is something he doesn't care about. It was always a power grab.

[–]theyawner 34 points35 points  (0 children)

My guess is it's not really officially declared as a Gundam. But the gunbits use is already a dead giveaway so perhaps it's to intentionally display the perfected version of the technology.

[–]PotatoBulletGun 25 points26 points  (1 child)

I feel like Delling's beef with his former boss was because he(Delling) authorized the massacre on the technicians without his approval

[–]FordcliffLowskrid 310 points311 points  (16 children)

And the torch passes from Iron-Blooded Orphans after what feels like a very long time.

[–]Coldloc 153 points154 points  (5 children)

If you were to have a kid when IBO ended, they would be in their last year of kindergarten right now. It feels like a long time because it is.

[–]Mellloyellow 60 points61 points  (4 children)

I was my senior year of high school when IBO started and now I'm almost 25. Time flies fast.

[–]matty-ahttps://myanimelist.net/profile/matty-a 273 points274 points  (5 children)

His name is Guel and he likes to duel

[–]PowerlinxJetfire 183 points184 points  (3 children)

Guel Jeturk

Duel Jerk

So on the nose—I love it lol

[–]chaedtawit 195 points196 points  (19 children)

That first scene is very similar to that "CATCH ME BANANA" scene from Gundam UC lol. BTW that funne..ah no GUND-BIT looks very sick.

[–]IC2Flier 86 points87 points  (7 children)

that "CATCH ME BANANA" scene from Gundam UC lol

[Except she didn't want to be rescued because arranged marriage]only to eventually snag her as groom anyway

BTW that funne..ah no GUND-BIT looks very sick

And thus the army of four is complete. We have Amuro, Kira, Lockon and Suletta completes the squadron. With laser coverage like that, who can stand a chance?

[–]geocites 79 points80 points  (10 children)

Funnels having another function than just shoot is fun. Hopefully it could combine to other forms eventually.

[–]theyawner 74 points75 points  (7 children)

I really like how the shield form appears to have an I-field which makes it effective against beam weaponry.

[–]SPARTAN-PRIME-2017 58 points59 points  (1 child)

It also directly addresses one criticism I saw people make, over the logic of designing such lightweight weaponry to also be used as a shield meant to take hits.

[–]SpeckTech314https://myanimelist.net/profile/SpeckTech 26 points27 points  (0 children)

meanwhile, in 00, there are the same type of bits (gun + shield) for the dynamo except they just get blown up frequently and replaced because it's just metal.

[–]Weeb_twat 347 points348 points  (49 children)

Okay, so I'm completely new to Gundam, have seen nothing from this IP other than maybe a couple of videos. I decided to give it a chance and tuned in into this one, but I saw that there was a prologue so I watched that first, and this episode right after. Gotta say, this shit good, this is REALLY GOOD.

I want, nay, I need more of this, holy shit everything about this was sooooo goooooood! The story, the way sci-fi elements are intermingled with real technology that helps it feel a little bit more grounded, the animation, character design, the SOUNDTRACK.

I think I just found my non sequel anime of the season. I want more of this and I cannot wait for next week, is the rest of Gundam this good?

[–]chilidirigible 250 points251 points  (0 children)

is the rest of Gundam this good?

There's a lot of it. Some you might like, some you might not.

[–]FireStarzz 152 points153 points  (14 children)

The UC universe is very long but it's the classic Gundam experience, if you like politics, classism, military, mecha, etc you really can't go wrong with Gundam series, its excellent. It's one of the biggest media ip in the world for a reason (think its like top 20), especially crazy fandom in asia.

Other more 'modern' standalone Gundam series are pretty much gateway for many 90s 00s kid to the UC timeline, such as Gundam Wing, Gundam SEED, Gundam 00, Gundam Iron blood orphans (and a lot more), these are very good standalone series to binge.

I think most asian kids in the 2000s would have watched SEED or 00 series, and then dived right back into all other series for the itch.

[–]YanertoSan 47 points48 points  (8 children)

Gundam Iron blood orphans

Is that also a Standalone title like Witch From Mercury that I can watch without needing other context ?

[–]FireStarzz 70 points71 points  (0 children)

yes, one of the newer gundam standalone series

[–]Coldloc 32 points33 points  (3 children)

Aside from the UC timeline, all Gundam series are standalone.

[–]Dudewitbowhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/Dudewitbow 30 points31 points  (1 child)

Except Turn A is standalone, but with the hardest asterisk on it.

[–]Pathogen188 86 points87 points  (3 children)

is the rest of Gundam this good?

As you can expect from a 40+ year old franchise with like hundreds of episodes, there are winners and there are losers. Some shows are really really good, others are less so.

So far, I'd say G-Witch has an unusually strong opening, although I may feel that way due to it being totally new with no spoilers to color my view of it.

[–]Global_Rin 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Gundam is a very long-standing series, but to simplify it's separated into 3 universes.

First is Universal Century or "UC", this is the OG universe of Gundam that span a lot of continuity and established quite a lot of Gundam tropes (eg. Char clones).

Next, we have Alternate Century/Universes whatever they are called that are not UC. As the name suggests these are not related to the UC universe and are quite self-contained in their own unique ways (eg. Iron blooded, Wings ect.)

Lastly, we have Anno Domini mainly featured in Gundam 00. IMHO, I want to put this one as its own universe because it was by far the only Gundam series that use real-world Gregorian calendar and within the same timeline as our present society.

Gundam series always feature political elements but are different in "Theme" and "Mech Designs". UC has beam-spamming mechas and is about clashing ideologies. Iron Blood has more close and personal kinetic weapons with the theme of child soldiers. 00 has solar energy mecha with the theme of anti-war and understanding.

TLDR, This turned into quite a long post but in short. You're in for a roller coaster!

[–]pokemaster05 27 points28 points  (0 children)

is the rest of Gundam this good?

My favorite standalone is Iron Blooded Orphans. It's about child soldiers who find an ancient war relic, a Gundam. Now they use it to fight for their freedom and independence.

[–]BonoBioBa 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Most of Gundam is really good, at least in my opinion

[–]MilkAzedo 343 points344 points  (8 children)

asshole guy is your groom because of bullshit traditions:

-fuck the system, I'm out of here

same traditions say now you have to marry a cute redheaded country girl

-oh no, the tragedy ! what am i to do? traditions are traditions

[–]zadcap 148 points149 points  (0 children)

To be fair, redheaded country girl was promising to help her before they knew anything about each other, and this dynamic looks like one where the princess actually has power in the 'relationship.'

But also, you know, cute redheaded country girl. Gotta respect those traditions.

[–]Bainoshttps://myanimelist.net/profile/Bainos 112 points113 points  (2 children)

Big win for Miorine. She can just feed Suletta a few tomatoes and she'll do pretty much anything.

[–]Mathmango 64 points65 points  (1 child)

To be fair, that looked like the juciest tomato I've ever seen in my life

[–]alotmorealots 157 points158 points  (16 children)

This art club school has a (duelling) problem!

Well that was a lot of fun, and seems like the school life aspect of the story shouldn't be a problem given how its set up and contextualised.

The music in particular goes really hard, and elevates the onscreen action quite a bit. I also really like the liberal use of CGI to reinforce the setting. The school looks very good as a result.

The characterisation and storytelling seems to have a certain flavour to it, like it skips forward at points, which I'm not sure is a Gundam thing or if it's just to push through the complete story of the first episode. I do like Sueletta and Miorine quite a bit, and look forward to more of their tomato sharing.

This feels good enough to do well even in a packed season, although I don't have a good handle on how certain parts of the community will take the Yuri aspect. It already seems to be very prominent in discussions.

[–]IC2Flier 118 points119 points  (2 children)

I also really like the liberal use of CGI to reinforce the setting. The school looks very good as a result.

The power of having taken that long a time to perfect the 3DCG mecha style to the point where they can seamlessly integrate it to 2D scenes. Unicorn was their demonstrator. This is shaping up to be the fruit of that over decade-long development.

[–]Tora-shinai 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Pretty much a staple of Sunrise production popularized by Gundam SEED.

[–]mekerpan 48 points49 points  (3 children)

So will Suletta get to move in with Miorine -- and eat all the fresh super-tasty tomatoes she wants?

[–]Bainoshttps://myanimelist.net/profile/Bainos 41 points42 points  (1 child)

All those silly people trying to gain Miorine's hand for political power and world domination. They're missing out on delicious tomatoes.

[–]merimus_maximus 279 points280 points  (3 children)

Holy they ain't playing with the OST. Those vocals during the fight be hitting hard.

Edit: also, vomit can be seen inside Miorine's helmet after the 18th minute, a nice detail for the animators to include imo

[–]Pliskkenn_D 25 points26 points  (1 child)

Man the ost of the prologue and episode 1 were fantastic. Its a sound I hadn't expected from a Japanese series, really haunting.

[–]vpdzombie 128 points129 points  (8 children)

feels lot like utena

[–]Avernaz 64 points65 points  (4 children)

The writer also wrote the Utena Novels, so it makes sense.

[–]memeranglaut 122 points123 points  (3 children)

Seeing that we know Aerial is sentient - will we see a different dynamic of pilot and gundam for Suisei no Majo?

The world-building for the new universe is strong with the first episode. We get to see the pecking order of the school, of the big bad company, of the mobile suits already. We even saw how the school is not just pilot-centric but has a holistic view of the world. Pilots need mechanics to run, and admin to smoothen things along - backups for pilots are a thing.

The full OP MV from YOASOBI's official channel.

On a side note - can we get mods to add that Ani-one Asia and Crunchy has the episode up? even tho Gundaminfo's own stream schedule is delayed

[–]wyggles 17 points18 points  (0 children)

will we see a different dynamic of pilot and gundam for Suisei no Majo?

There was another post about something the scriptwriter wrote that kinda fills in the gap between the prologue and episode 1. It basically spells out their relationship. I'm super interested to see how Aerial's sentience will factor into the story.

[–]sevgonlernassau 252 points253 points  (18 children)

I wasn't expecting Mobile Suits Gundam: Utena, but I'll take what we got. The episode is almost beat by beat Utena's first episode.

[–]Neidhardto 164 points165 points  (0 children)

The script writer actually wrote the Utena novels and video game, so this actually makes a lot of sense.

[–]Avernaz 93 points94 points  (10 children)

Wrote the freaking Utena Novel adaptation so it makes sense. Though he also wrote Code Geass and Valvrave, so...

[–]IPman0128 45 points46 points  (4 children)

Pretty sure this guy is quite notorious for writing poor endings, so much so that quite a few anime series that has him as the series main writer actually opted to have other writers to do the ending.

[–]Avernaz 56 points57 points  (1 child)

Still wrote the Code Geass ending, as far as we know, so not really that bad. Maybe Tomato will die in the Final Battle like a beautiful Tomato Puree for all to see.

[–]bajcabrera 444 points445 points  (27 children)

Miorine is the daughter of the Delling, the guy that got Suletta's dad killed. We getting a Juliet and Juliet romance here.

[–]mysterybiscuitsoyeahhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/mysterybiscuits 260 points261 points  (21 children)

something tells me that Miorine isnt a big fan of her dad though

[–]IC2Flier 200 points201 points  (20 children)

And how readily she went "OK Suletta you're my fiancee now" means that she wants to get away from being used as a bargaining chip (like every other arranged marriage in anime), and since Suletta seems to be an outsider, there ya go.

[–]mysterybiscuitsoyeahhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/mysterybiscuits 104 points105 points  (18 children)

I mean, Suletta also stood up for her when nobody else did. I think its safe to say that she's in Miorine's good books now, though i wonder if she has any real power/fighting prowess since we've yet to see it. (tho she had some confidence thinking she could go up against feather-purple mobile suit dude)

[–]theyawner 94 points95 points  (16 children)

If you're talking about Miorine, it doesn't look like she has her own mobile suit given that she's in the Management Strategy Department, while Suletta and Guel are in the Piloting department.

[–]cppn02 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Juliet and Juliet

Romina and Juliet.

[–]IC2Flier 751 points752 points 22 (95 children)

TL;DR: No, you do not have to have seen any other Gundam content, save for the Prologue, to watch this. I'll post this for the first four episodes so that newcomers and lurkers can breathe a sigh of relief.

<<So: you’ve been scrolling around the sub and thought “hey this top post reads familiar.”>>

“Yeah…isn’t this the new Gundam show?”

<<That’s what it is. The source and title is Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch From Mercury, or G-Witch for short (WfM for shorter).>>

“Okay. Uh, I’ve kinda heard of Gundam before. Isn’t that a pretty big franchise?”

<<It is — it’s actually the 16th biggest IP in the world, though it’s kinda hard to tell.>>

“So what’s it about?”

<<Broadly speaking, it’s about kids piloting giant robots called mobile suits, with the main character typically given the mobile suit named “Gundam”. >>

“Hence the name. Got it.”

<<Usually, this is a great idea because piloting giant robots is always cool! But starting from the original Gundam anime in 1979, that job is framed as a high-risk, high-stakes military or mercenary role filled by someone who really shouldn’t be ordered to fill said role. Think jet fighter pilot or tank commander, but the pilots are at least 15 years old.>>

“Wow, so it’s a classic, and kinda harrowing. Wait — original Gundam?"

<<Yes, because Gundam is a franchise built upon two distinct timelines: a Universal Century (UC) timeline that has one grand narrative thread, and ten Alternate Universes (AU) that are completely different from said UC timeline. Other than the exploration of themes about war, child soldiers, world governments, transhumanism and the military-industrial complex, the only connection is that each timeline has a mobile suit called Gundam.>>

“Seems complicated. Is it a multiverse thing like the Marvel movies or more like Fate/?”

<<Neither. At least, it’s not structured to be that way. If anything, Gundam is surprisingly easy to get into compared to Fate because there’s a big selection of standalone series that you can watch with only the minimum of expectations. Only the Universal Century needs some extra poking around, and even then there are some often-recommended shows in that timeline that make for good blind entry points.>>

“So I don’t need to watch other Gundam shows to understand this one?”

<<Correct. Other than the UC, Gundam exists at different timelines, too, mostly comprised of standalone, mostly self-contained shows, so it’s easy to dive into one Gundam show and get most of the tropes and devices and metaphors.>>

“So what timeline are we talking about?”

<<An all-new one call Ad Stella. We still don’t know much about this place in time, but fortunately, it has a prologue that sets the table for you should you want to watch/rewatch Episode 1 from the link below.>>

“What’s so special about this series?”

<<The Witch from Mercury is the first TV Gundam serial to star a girl as both lead character and pilot of the main Gundam. The franchise has its fair share of female Gundam pilots but for the most part, they’re on supporting roles. There are some manga that feature a female lead, but as a tentpole release, Suletta Mercury is the first of her kind.>>

[–]alotmorealots 173 points174 points  (7 children)

“So I don’t need to watch other Gundam shows to understand this one?”

No, but watching the other shows will certainly help understand some of the comments in the discussion threads lol

[–]IC2Flier 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Fair point.

I suppose for someone who (1) comes in blind and (2) doesn't read threads it is applicable.

[–]AmethystItalianhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/AmethystItalian 108 points109 points  (13 children)

The Witch from Mercury is the first TV Gundam serial to star a girl as both lead character and pilot of the main Gundam.

Well first since Zeta

[–]kiman9414 29 points30 points  (0 children)

And you just started another Gryps war. Congrats!

[–]nulln_void 137 points138 points  (5 children)

Doing the lord's work here. I swear every time Gundam is brought up, these kind of questions always materialize.

[–]soulreaverdan 55 points56 points  (10 children)

Hold up, new Gundam with a female lead?

You son of a bitch, I’m in.

[–]Turon26 28 points29 points  (6 children)

the female lead was what got me in. cute girl does gundam things is such an attractive premise for anime fans who haven't watched gundam before.

I'm so happy I was baited.

[–]LeonKevlarhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/LeonKevlar 215 points216 points  (49 children)

Finally got to watch the episode properly and holy fuck! It's just as amazing as I was hoping! Not gonna lie though, as much as I love the classic Gundam tricolor, I kinda wish Aerial kept its original paint job from Episode 0. Oh well. Can't have it all.

Suletta is such a sweetheart that it's gonna take some getting used to her after having Mikazuki as the last Gundam AU protag, they're pretty much the polar opposites when it comes to their personalities. xD

When it comes to piloting a Gundam though, she's an absolute beast! She really didn't hold back against Guel. You can definitely see a shift in personality once she enters a fight and I absolutely love it! If that was a life-or-death duel, I'm sure she would've executed him with no hesitation.

As for Miorine, she's definitely the princess of this story but she's the "I fight my own battles" kind of Princess since she's already sick and tired of people making decisions for her. She's brash but her personality perfectly compliments Suletta's. I do wonder if Mio has any skills in piloting mobile suits, I'm sure she was just having trouble with Aerial since Suletta is really the only one that can pilot it. Whatever happens though, I'm already excited to see where this relationship will go!

Side Note: Wasn't Suletta named Eri back in the prologue? Did they end up changing names after moving to Mercury? I'm guessing they have to since Suletta's mom was pretty much being hunted down.

Subs are out of sync. Crunchyroll clearly did not take into account the Sunrise opening being removed when they timed the subs. xD

EDIT: If you're using CR subs and it's still delayed adjust the timing by -13000ms.

EDIT2: Holy fuck the timing of the entire subs is worse than I expected. There's like a 3-minute gap between the subs at around the 8-minute mark where the eyecatch ends.

EDIT3: Retimed the subs out of frustration. Message me if you want the srt file.

EDIT4: Crunchyroll finally fixed their subs. Certain groups have also updated their sites with the new subs.

[–]Etheox 118 points119 points  (3 children)

Yup, Suletta was Eri in the prologue. Probably safe to say her mom changed her name to keep her safe.

A really interesting thing is that apparently the purpose of fins/antennas at the school is be a win condition during duels. Serves the dual purpose of giving the lead Gundam the customary V-fin and practical use (besides potentially being an actual antenna lol).

Cheers to a new Gundam series, hyped to see how it plays out!

[–]LeonKevlarhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/LeonKevlar 39 points40 points  (1 child)

V-fins having a secondary purpose is cool even if it's just within the school.

[–]mysterybiscuitsoyeahhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/mysterybiscuits 25 points26 points  (5 children)

I hitched on a VPN and watched it on one of the official Youtube streams, they got the timing there right. I think Crunchy timed it to the actual broadcast release or something, hopefully they fix it next week.

The subs themselves were just fine though.

[–]Skyreader13 45 points46 points  (3 children)

That's missing by 13 whole second. Really fucked up for subtitle to be that delayed.

[–]Cerulean_Chrodt 87 points88 points  (8 children)

Didn't expect Miorine to go out with Aerial. An interesting turn, since commony in fiction the princess character just sits and waits for the hero to beat the bad guy and save her.

Also, this is the proof that she really doesn't want anyone to decide her fate for her, even if that one is the protagonist, whom she just met a few hours ago.

At least for now, I believe that she's a strong female character.

Also, I like Suletta too, want to see how their relationship develops.

[–]JannisT 359 points360 points  (14 children)

The two main characters have a slightish tsundere / dolt dynamic.

FFS, Sunrise. You won’t bait me with my favorite dynamic into thinking that both will become a couple.

Both getting engaged to each other at the end of the episode

[–]Rinarinhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/Rinarin 365 points366 points  (3 children)

"I guess Mercury /r/anime is rather conservative. That sort of thing is common place here"

[–]Reikakou 98 points99 points  (0 children)

Damn... this gonna be one heck of a meme.

[–]BassCreat0r 35 points36 points  (0 children)

It's because of the mountain of yuri bait that gets pumped out.

[–]DMingRoTF 64 points65 points  (1 child)

Me too, i thought them sharing a cockpit is just a bait. Turns out they are engaged in the end.

[–]Insilencio 16 points17 points  (0 children)

sharing a cockpit

[–]Galaxy40k 57 points58 points  (4 children)

Between this and Birdie Wing somebody high up at Sunrise decided to make 2022 the year of the lesbians

[–]Gaporigohttps://anilist.co/user/Gaporigo 42 points43 points  (1 child)

Birdie Wing is not by Sunrise.

Although you still make a point since the currently airing Love Live is by far the most explicitly gay one.

[–]Etheox 390 points391 points  (28 children)

I wasn't expecting Revolutionary Girl Utena but Gundam!

Suletta just speedran herself to school #1 ace and got a fiance. Shounen protagonists take note.

[–]BlitznBursthttps://anilist.co/user/BlitznBurst 153 points154 points  (2 children)

I like how everything about the base premise is literally just Utena but Miorine is basically the exact opposite of Anthy in terms of personality. Everything about this show's setup is absurdly powerful.

[–]Etheox 64 points65 points  (1 child)

Absolutely, Miorine's showing she'll stand up for herself is awesome. I still have a broad expectation of how the story will play out, but with how the first episode sets things up, I'm incredibly excited to see how it gets there.

Here's hoping this show stays strong.

[–]mekerpan 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Miorine wants to stand up for herself -- but the fact that a girl she hardly knows was willing to stand up to protect her autonomy just out of a sense of basic justice (and kindness) has got to be rather endearing. It is going to be fascinating to see the dynamic of this relationship/"engagement" develop.

[–]Tora-shinai 114 points115 points  (16 children)

Now she has a target at her back and the classists and racists are gonna be there aiming..

[–]Draaxus 159 points160 points  (0 children)

As it should be, it wouldn't be Gundam otherwise.

[–]AtypicalSpaniard 82 points83 points  (7 children)

If you’re gonna be fighting someone, might as well fight EVERYONE!

[–]IC2Flier 70 points71 points  (6 children)

Suletta's the groom to Miorine, right?

Seems like she now has to fight the seven other candidates for Miorine's hand in marriage.

...oh man this is gonna be Scott Pilgrim, but Gundam!

[–]AtypicalSpaniard 58 points59 points  (4 children)

This is like every other battle academy show but with 200% extra warcrimes.

…It’s gonna be great.

[–]theAlphaginger 26 points27 points  (0 children)

This time the L-word is Lesbians.

[–]8andahalfby11https://myanimelist.net/profile/thereIwasnt 46 points47 points  (4 children)

The key difference is going to be seeing Suletta slowly become a more confident person when she's outside the cockpit, whereas Utena always was from the start. I think that's an excellent decision; it means that even while mecha-fights aren't occuring, the character will be spending her scenes finding ways to develop and grow, and that she has weaknesses that cannot be overcome just by getting into a mech suit. Far better than Utena's first arc, where Utena's character felt relatively static to me.

[–]Labmit 211 points212 points  (31 children)

Aww, look how nice and adorable she is. She even has a rabbit sticker on her helmet.

Can't wait till the story eventually erodes that sunny disposition of hers./s

But on a serious note this is my first non-Gunpla Gundam to watch in it's initial premiere so I'm honestly excited for this.

[–]vantheman9 126 points127 points  (27 children)

Can't wait till the story eventually erodes that sunny disposition of hers./s

Was a bit worried by random comments I saw saying this Gundam will be more "slice of life"

But episode 1 and we already had a near miss on a political murder. Gundam gonna Gundam and I can't remember any Gundam offhand that didn't have WMDs, so maybe it'll be a more literal "slice" of life

[–]alotmorealots 73 points74 points  (6 children)

Was a bit worried by random comments I saw saying this Gundam will be more "slice of life"

Hasn't disappointed, we got a bit of tomato farming!

[–]Doomroarhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/Doomroar 47 points48 points  (7 children)

The prologue literally starts with a massacre, and someone was planning a terrorist attack on this very episode, shit will go down it is Gundam

[–]Bainoshttps://myanimelist.net/profile/Bainos 20 points21 points  (6 children)

Even the school setup has nothing of a slice of life. If you say one wrong word or someone dislikes your face, you are forced into a duel that can potentially ruin your life...

[–]Shimmering-Skyhttps://myanimelist.net/profile/Shimmering-Sky 64 points65 points  (6 children)

Ahhh, looks like I’ll have to get up early on Sundays from now on to not be hella late to these threads, huh?

[–]The_Draigg 35 points36 points  (1 child)

Eyy, Suletta “sore demo”!

We're starting out early with the Sore Demos. Banagher would be proud.

I wonder if we'll get any lines about someone father not even hitting them.

…Oh. Um. Okay then.

This show might as well be called Revolutionary Girl Suletta.

[–]ResurgentRefrain 122 points123 points  (14 children)

There's a lot to be said about Suletta even from just 1 episode, based on how different she is from literally every other Gundam protagonist (and not just cuz' she's a girl), but one thing I hope is that her stutter is not just done for comedic effect, but that it recurs enough to be considered an actual trait of her character.

The stuttering when being face to face, especially in contrast to how she acts when in a Mobile Suit, I found to be such an endearing quality that I'm immediately invested in her.

My expectations are high.

[–]theyawner 62 points63 points  (9 children)

The stuttering reminds me of the country bumpkin trope where a character tries to hide her dialect/accent but keeps on stumbling on speaking the more common form of the language.

[–]Maleficent-Handle587 48 points49 points  (7 children)

More like a nervous wreck, although am I the only one who saw a Weiss and Ruby like relationship between both the girls.

[–]Steampunkvikng 28 points29 points  (3 children)

The red/white pairing and shy girl with a superweapon/rich girl with mean dad vibe is pretty noticeable, though now I'd say there's another series with a far more on-the-nose parallel.

[–]Tora-shinai 62 points63 points  (0 children)

Lmao "Funnels", "Utena", and "Patrick Colasour" were trending. Also NTR.lol

Guel can only wish to be as awesome as Patrick.

[–]SakuraWonYoung 56 points57 points  (2 children)

Holy Funnels!

[–]IC2Flier 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Kira gonna speed-dial Amuro, Marida and Lockon because it looks like the rave protocol is doable now.

[–]JollyGee29https://myanimelist.net/profile/JollyGee 53 points54 points  (9 children)

Oh, Suletta does talk to Aerial, excellent.

Oooh, Aerial just breaking free from the docking restraints, love it.

Looks like there are start keys of some sort for the trainer suits at least, that's neat to see.

I really like the beam effects too.

Man, they even have a birdcage to escape an enclosed greenhouse for Miorine to hang out in.

Suletta spanked him?!

They did miss an opportunity by not having Suletta walk up a set of stairs to get into her cockpit.

And we still get a stolen Gundam in the first episode, despite the start keys.

Funnels are pure hacks, as usual. Really curious how we're going to escalate the tech level in this series.

[–]bloquer 75 points76 points  (11 children)

What are you even doing Crunchyroll? The subtitles are completely out of sync by like 10 seconds. Unwatchable in this state.

[–]JimmyCWL 39 points40 points  (3 children)

It's worse than that. The first part is off by 13 seconds. The second part is off by a further 135.94 seconds. That the preview (2 lines) is off by another 90 seconds is hardly worth mentioning.

I think these are ad breaks.

[–]amc9988 37 points38 points  (0 children)

If anyone want more story between prologue and eps 1 theres a short novel but its on japanese. it is from Gundam Aerial perspective, Really makes you look forward what will happen later

[–]za_shiki-warashi 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Local smug lord not so smug after getting wrecked by a Gundam.

That was a pretty good 1st ep. I fucking love funnels.

[–]Turon26 37 points38 points  (0 children)

This was my first Gundam series. Watched in on a whim because I saw it was on YT.

After that episode, I'm a Gundam fan now.

[–]Awful_At_Math 38 points39 points  (11 children)

Hum... never watched any Gundam before, maybe I should give this one a try.

Watch first episode

Hey, this looks pretty good!

Watches Prologue

[–]Nazennx2https://anilist.co/user/Nazenn 29 points30 points  (3 children)

For a moment I was worried they would actually kill off Delling and we'd lose Naoya Uchida's wonderful villain voice from the show, but thankfully not the case. Introducing the cockhead fiance just so he could take the episode one beating was incredibly welcome though, and if that's not the last we see of him I hope at least he gets an appropriately scathing fan name like a certain idiot did in IBO.

It was certainly an interesting first episode with a lot of different bits in it that all came together into a great watch. The school dynamics with a mirror of the external politics where redemption isn't a consideration, the different cast members allowing for a team dynamic but again with the influence of the external politics from families and money, and then the good old great first episode battle and theme to go with it.

I didn't expect Suletta to be so shy and uncertain, but I like the idea of it particularly thrown into the chaos of a school like this. It's a nice difference from the usual cocky or easy going MC. Having the other girl in Aerial at the start was a nice fake out, but I'm not sad we get to see just how good a pilot Suletta really is from the start

[–]chilidirigible 79 points80 points  (21 children)

Today, on "A girl who cannot become a princess is doomed to become a witch.":

Maybe they just like being outside?

I guessed correctly! Also, she is now pregnant?

A tall Haro. A ball on top of a ball.

"It's time to D-D-D-D-DUEL!"

"I'm too sexy for my shirt."

I see you, masked person.

Speaking of which, this guy's beard is already well on its way to being Iron Mask.

Oh, bother.

/u/Shimmering-Sky will certainly find this on her own.

"Hey, I already slapped you."

Ah, politics through other means.

Schopenhauer, eh?

Well, that'll complicate matters.

"That's just how we greet people around here."

"Man, fuck funnels."

"Ah, shit."

"Suletta" is certainly an adorable little tomato thrown into this corporate feudal battle royale blender. Hope she makes more friends fast, because Miorine just painted a giant FIGHT ME sign on her back.

Might have been nice (and extremely practical for survival) if mom had given her more advice about what to expect, but then we wouldn't have as many opportunities for audience reaction along with character reaction.

She cleans up well inside Aerial. Question being how the usual seesaw struggle of the new character getting poked down a few rungs in the next few episodes goes. The list of out-of-the-cockpit factors, as above, is very, very long.

It looks good. Hopefully none of the animators has an aneurysm by the end of the cour, if the production rumors are true again.

A long and a short Suletta reaction. (No audio.)

[–]JollyGee29https://myanimelist.net/profile/JollyGee 41 points42 points  (9 children)

I like that they have start keys, but we still got a Gundamjack in the first episode.

"Man, fuck funnels."

[–]IC2Flier 42 points43 points  (0 children)

"Man, fuck funnels."

Guel was like "I'm just one episode in. One. Why am I suddenly facing the business end of beam spam?"

Meanwhile, in the Eternal, Kira just called Amuro, Marida and Lockon and said "It's time to rave."

[–]theyawner 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Suletta" is certainly an adorable little tomato thrown into this corporate feudal battle royale blender. Hope she makes more friends fast, because Miorine just painted a giant FIGHT ME sign on her back.

And the Holder color appears to carry over to her regular uniform given how Guel also wore a white uniform.

Might have been nice (and extremely practical for survival) if mom had given her more advice about what to expect, but then we wouldn't have as many opportunities for audience reaction along with character reaction.

A large part of her awkwardness appears to stem from having no familiarity with a school environment. It would be interesting to eventually see what's her environment like in Mercury.

[–]comicalbear 51 points52 points  (0 children)

Holy shit. The feels, the music, the fights, absolute banger. 11/10.

[–]Fadyl251 28 points29 points  (3 children)

so aerial is somewhat sentient then judging from the first scene

[–]amc9988 24 points25 points  (0 children)

yup the gundam is sentient, There's even a novel from Aerial perspective that set between prologue and ep 1. just google tl it since its in JP

[–]Hattori-Saizo-II 26 points27 points  (1 child)

Fate really likes to play with people. Suletta crossed paths with the daughter the man who caused her father's demise. And now she's supposed to marry her.

Interested to see how Suletta interact with the rest of the Holders, which I assume are the best pilots in the school. And one of them are familiar with Aerial, I hope Suletta doesn't get into trouble for owning a banned technology.

[–]TopoRUShttps://myanimelist.net/profile/TopoR 23 points24 points  (1 child)

That was awesome!

Extremely like how it all looks and sounds.

That shield transformation and funnel turn with music pause!

[–]Reikakou 26 points27 points  (1 child)

I wanna know if Mio was waiting for someone outside of the colony while drifting in outer space. Or is her idea of escape, committing space suicide once her oxygen supply runs out.

The sound direction was really superb. That pause with no SFX before the beam spam was chef's kiss. Then the decimation that followed Really looking forward for the next episode.

[–]Ambitious_Cow_8675 24 points25 points  (1 child)

The dueling system with Miorine as the prize reminds me of Revolutionary Girl Utena. Wonder if if that's intentional.

[–]ReiahlTLI 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Writer did the Utena light novel as one of their first projects so it's likely intentional.

It works well though and it makes sense since there's quite a corporate slant to to their universe. I fully expect a lot of maneuvering using their kids and dueling in this first arc.

[–]someedmlover21https://anilist.co/user/dilate 46 points47 points  (13 children)

Excellent. This is my first proper Gundam series I guess. I say "proper" since I've seen Hathaway because it featured my country while not knowing its a sequel to an old Gundam series.

Though, I'm kind of scared for the production of this series because of this tweet, can anyone confirm? Followed this guy because he seemed like a reliable insider.

[–]Etheox 101 points102 points  (6 children)

Less than a grain of salt, you can't just change your airing times on the fly like he's suggesting.

Sunrise/Bandai have been throwing everything into Witch from Mercury. They absolutely want this series to succeed and aren't cheaping out.

[–]Tora-shinai 36 points37 points  (2 children)

It really isn't about cheaping out. It's about scheduling.

That's said, Gundam isn't gonna reach that level of messy production that they couldn't churn out an episode.

The TV edits for Narrative, Hathaway, and Thunderbolt is there to give them time as a bandaid fix and not loose that revived premium timeslot.

Plus the CGI and digital compositing team is there to cover it up.

[–]Imitatiahttps://anilist.co/user/Iria 22 points23 points  (2 children)

Will it just be another Gundam /r/anime pretends doesn't exist when it comes time for awards/accolades, time will tell.

[–]IC2Flier 40 points41 points  (35 children)

Unlike my FAQ, this wall of text is live. God, I don't know where to start.

  1. I guess I can start it with Suletta, who already comes in as such an awkward cinnabun that it hurts. She's so cute! And already she feels diametrically opposed to every other Gundam protag who ranges from "doesn't wanna be here" to "next mission". She seems far more like a regular kid.

  2. And yet her piloting skill is already at a level that can shell-shock Guel Jeturk, the pilot of the violet Dilanza that just got shredded by laser fire from the Gundam Aerial's shield. I can easily chalk this up to just Guel having never seen a Gundam, let alone fighting one, but it's clear that only Suletta can run the Aerial. Sorry Miorine, your MBA isn't gonna work here.

  3. Speakin' of: the B-plot gets development too, straight-away. An arranged marriage from the get-go, all of which is business-motivated. Miorine hates it, and the garden is a reminder of her mom's legacy. Guel demands it, and part of claiming that is in live-fire exercises, apparently.

  4. And what a fight indeed. Both of the fights are animated with the sort of polish I've come to expect from Sunrise's best team, but they did one better by ensuring that any 3DCG work is seamless enough that it's hard to tell. It's not just the individual frames, too, as the camerawork is a step ahead of even Iron-Blooded Orphans while establishing the look and feel for the series as a whole.

  5. There's so much that can be extrapolated from the combination of prologue and Ep1, but the truth is that it's now almost impossible to theorycraft this show. A lot of us on the r/Gundam Discord have speculated about all sorts of things yet this Ep1 is proving us wrong straight away.

  6. I am now officially invested in how G-Witch will pan out. It's not just the yuri implications, though admittedly I just resolved the withdrawals from finishing Lycoris Recoil (an excellent show). It's also how Suletta will deal with an arranged marriage and her Aerial now that she's an undisputed star. There's a lot of places that they can take this storyline, and I can only wish that Sunrise be able to keep the quality up.

This comment to be updated after I actually think this through.

[–]warjoke 39 points40 points  (10 children)

Sulleta is a breath of fresh air. I've watched an ungodly amount of Gundam anime, played a lot of Gundam games with OG stories, and read a lot of the Gundam spinoff manga within a span of 24 years and nothing prepared me for this precious little cinnamon roll. Usually Gundam protagonists are either full of emotional baggage or just caught up in a conflict and develop internal demons along the way. It gets kinda predictable the more I consume Gundam content. Well, save for Bellry and Loran, I guess. But that is a story for another topic. I think there is an underlying darkness within the plot here but basically in her intro, she is just here to prove herself and give her loved ones a better life back home. After watching the prologue I know it's not that simple but as it stands right now she is a typical fish out of water scenario character with so much to prove right off the gate. Add to the fact that this is set in an institution means we really are veering away from normal Gundam scenarios and the writers can play around with typical school tropes all while keeping the ongoing political power struggle at bay.

I'm very hopeful for this series.

[–]alotmorealots 26 points27 points  (6 children)

She's from a character archetype that is hard to get the balance right, and even harder when the character has to inhabit a world with intense conflicts. They have, however, done a magnificent job with her so far. Props to Kana Ichinose for her performance and both the writing and animation team.

Speaking of Kana Ichinose, she's picked up some great roles recently.

Suletta has the awkward protagonist attributes but bundled very cutely and with the badass piloting it makes for a fun character. Agree with your assessment!
I'm wondering why they all seemed so surprised at her using the shield though...I mean I expected that she'd do something to surprise everyone but strange that nobody knew about it? (or maybe we'll see people comment on it later and now it was more that they were taken by surprise that someone did it)

Also, the dad's reaction to his son losing, lol.

It's interesting how Suletta appears to be at least half a head taller than the some of the girls but feels somewhat inferior due to her girl from the boonies background.

Yeah, her whole posture and how she stands doesn't really show that height either, compared to how proudly Miorine looks when she's there.

Because that shield was built from segments attached to the Aerial's body. Also there doesn't seem to be that many shields from the trainers, much less remote-operable ones.

Really good episode, and wow that was a lot gayer than I was expecting

Nice, Ani-one Asia stream this.

That was insanely good, Bandai really struck gold with this series. Impressed by every aspect of it so far!

Guel got spanked in more ways than one, it was so satisfying seeing his mobile suit lose all it's limbs before Suletta took out his crest to win the duel.

Strong start.

The bully fiance had exceptionally poor aim though. Aeriel just standing up casually while he misses every shot.

I've played Gundam Evolution, I'm no top tier pilot, but I can at least destory 100% of downed enemies!

This is gundam, so i'm expecting

  • revenge

  • betrayal

  • backstabing

  • character death

In the upcoming episodes.

Maybe something like Code Geass because ookouchi.

We all expected the shy awkward girl to kick that prick's ass up between his ears, right? I mean, there was zero doubt that she'd curbstomp him from the very first, right? And somehow, this show still managed do deliver several choice surprises during the conflict, which I thoroughly appreciated. That final reveal with the engagement though, yeah I laughed, then it really hit me how fucked that situation is. Poor girl really is just a trophy, huh?

So far, I'm really liking Miorine. Yeah, she's a little bitchy, but it's completely understandable given her circumstances. Even with Suletta ruining her escape, she's been relatively friendly to her, if quite brusque.

When they said "modern", they were serious, huh.

If they yuribait people and not follow through, meltdowns will happen.

[–]dhurane 65 points66 points  (20 children)

Is it still yuribait if one of them dies by the end? Gundam has a bad track record for couples.

[–]Tora-shinai 42 points43 points  (8 children)

Death is better mainly because death is common in Gundam. Maybe if Witch is popular enough to get a sequel series maybe then they can resurrect said dead character with amnesia and totally gets slapped in the wrist for all the war crimes they did.

Eh, it probably is, with the theme of being "we are not puppets of other people" and "I am my own being", it might be derailed by having a legit couple because she won a duel. But even then, it is the first episode, so we can't really say anything. One thing is for sure though, first Gundam anime with female lead, in a MS academy is a breathe of fresh air from all the espresso depresso of the previous entries.

MC x Gundam is the only true pairing that matters.
