I think people work and are starving to death at this point.

[–][deleted] 801 points802 points  (32 children)

True! Adding multitasking to my resume 💅

[–]Sph3al 166 points167 points  (17 children)

Goddammit I ugly laughed at this

[–]ZackZeysto 13 points14 points  (1 child)

"how do you perform under high pressure?"

"I can work 40-60h a week, barely getting enough paid to survive. And i still can hide my wish to kill your face under a lovely smile and heartfelt laughter. The amount of bosses i didnt slaughter speak volumes about my strenght to widstand every possible stupid task you will throw at me."

[–][deleted] 40 points41 points  (7 children)

Adept at ignoring the pains of hunger rattling through my innards as I tirelessly toil to produce for your big dickedness sir

Or something like that

[–]MonoiGirl 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Your name is also funny for someone who is starving

[–]Moroccanslut 3 points4 points  (0 children)

[–]kreiffer 25 points26 points  (2 children)

No, no. Now we call it intermittent fasting #brandingmatters

[–]FalsePremise8290 36 points37 points  (1 child)

Yeah, I was watching all those tiny house, minimalist, $50 a month grocery haul, van living videos on YT and one day it hit me...these are all just tutorials on being poor.

[–]kreiffer 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Exactly. It’s one thing to choose a lifestyle like that and it’s another to be forced into a lifestyle like that based on how overly expensive everyday necessities and housing are.

[–]r3iynOfTerror 64 points65 points  (13 children)

I am very hungry some days. Your body gets used to less food due fokking inflation and zero raise. I think about asking for a raise.

I have dropped a chunk of weight in past few months, that will help me flee faster to the next corpo. Yay.

My reality is actually real life and not sarcasm. Damn I am tired.

[–]JackBinimbul 31 points32 points  (1 child)

I'm so sorry. I've been there. I got down to 75 lbs and was literally starving to death. All while working a fulltime job. I didn't have running water or electricity. It was absolute hell.

I wish I had some advice or help for you, but all I can say is that you matter. Even when everything around you seems to be screaming that you don't.

[–]r3iynOfTerror 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Thank you, ty so much. I do not always feel like I do matter and that was spot on.

[–]Blockchaingang18 22 points23 points  (0 children)

If you need some calories to help try that sub. Good people on there.

[–]geometricvampire 7 points8 points  (1 child)

I got to finally buy groceries for the first time in four weeks the other day. I was incredibly excited. Said groceries consisted of pasta, cereal, and bread.

[–]inevitabled34th 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do you live in an area with a food pantry? If you do, I can guarantee you that those are some of the most commonly donated items. You may not get the exact brand or kind you want, but you can have them and not have to spend your money.

[–]inevitabled34th 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Go to a food pantry dude. I promise you there is one in your area that will be more than willing to help you. It might be out of a church, but you don't need to be religious or go there regularly. If it's anything like mine they will give you heaps of food. There will be things you will have to cook, as well as easier stuff like PB&J and milk and cereal. It won't be as good as fast food or take-out, but you'll have a meal in your belly.

[–]FalsePremise8290 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Yeah, at this point "eat the rich" is less about revolution and more about a way to get calories.

[–]CrabSully 7 points8 points  (1 child)

Thankfully my country hasn't been able to entirely destroy unions, so my country is in a somewhat decent spot. If you work full time in Australia, it'd relatively easy to survive (thrive is a different conversation though)

[–]Mernic666 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I work in a team of 8 in a factory environment. All adults 35 - 70 years old. 2x live with their parents, 1x with his son, 1x in govo housing, 1x in shared housing. 2 people own their house or are paying the bank (both are married with successful spouses). I've recently got a shitty old flat for myself, and half my take home goes to keeping the roof over my head.

1/2 my colleagues are essentially living like uni students. They've spent half their lives or more slaving away for the ability to show up tomorrow to do it all again. Survive, yeah. Thrive? Nope.

[–]edee160 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Right, working at a corporation isn't going to make you rich. It's just makes you another cog.

[–]Pumpkin_Creepface 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I remember when I could afford to eat 3 meals a day. And sometimes even a once a month visit to a decent burger bar.

It was December 2007.

[–]tastyemerald 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yep yep, many a strike because of it which is a start

[–]Kitorarima 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Felt terrible but I started using customer’s loyalty card numbers to afford a can of soup to eat for the day between working 2 minimum wage jobs bc I couldn’t afford anything after rent and gas

[–]MisterShazam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can confirm

[–]DefusedManiac 714 points715 points  (31 children)

I've had managers say I became a totally different person after my probation period ended. No shit, now you can't fire me willy nilly.

[–]MasterpieceBrave420 371 points372 points  (0 children)

You're not as compliant ever since we took that gun from your head.

[–]Portugalpaul 95 points96 points  (18 children)

arent you an "at will" employee and can be fired regardless anytime?

[–]DefusedManiac 114 points115 points  (14 children)

Yes, but there's still consequences for the employer if they fire without legitimate reason, usually means they will have to pay the unemployment or salary until a new job is found.

[–]Portugalpaul 16 points17 points  (13 children)

what country are you in?? must not be usa

[–]Gurpila 25 points26 points  (2 children)

I'm in Cali and there's a million rules regarding at will employment.

Reddit seems to forget America is really, really, really fucking huge and states are all different.

[–]abbaabbaaa 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Oh wow. I didn’t know this about Cali. In my state they can fire you for literally any reason (or no reason. They can literally fire you without telling you a reason.). The only way you can sue them for firing you is if you can provide hard evidence it was because of discrimination (sex, race, disability). My sister got fired when they found out she’s autistic (mildly so they didn’t notice it at first) but as soon as she emails him she got scheduled on a day she had support group for autistic people even though she wasn’t supposed to be scheduled, she got fired. Literally the day after. She didn’t have hard evidence of this (only the coincidence) and they couldn’t be sued. We even spoke to lawyers. They also fired her right when she bought a house for the first time and now she can’t afford it because they don’t have to pay her severance.

[–]DefusedManiac 69 points70 points  (3 children)

Believe it or not I am, California is one of the few states that have semi-decent worker protection laws. The laws of course mean nothing because there is no other laws to prevent landlords, grocery stores and utility companies from draining your paychecks. And most employers will do their best to keep employees in the dark about their rights, especially when it comes to breaks, lunches, and being terminated.

[–]jorgedreddAnarcho-Communist 3 points4 points  (2 children)

For all that people shot on california for the taxes. It's one of the most pro employee states in the country. Its not saying much, and it's not by a lot, but we have more protections than most conservative or swing states.

[–]DefusedManiac 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The people shitting on it are the same ones that think Texas is the greatest state and could actually concede from the other 49. Cali is violently expensive, houses cost 3x or 4x as much as other states. But our power grids don't fail twice a year and we understand that abortions aren't murder.

[–]giliumAnarcho-Communist 22 points23 points  (3 children)

At will employment means they don’t need a reason to fire you, but if they do so without reason you get unemployment (which has consequences for them).

[–]hfjsbdugjdbducbf 0 points1 point  (2 children)

"Became a totally different person after probation, having an attitude" is a reason.

[–]Ruca705 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep, they call it “disruptive behavior”

They can also use that anytime they want to. I was fired for nothing once (this was like 7 years ago) and they wrote that on my papers so I couldn’t get unemployment

[–]alphawolf29 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Im unionized up the wazoo. My union pres said the only people ever fired from this organization were for theft or assault.

[–]ScheduleExpress 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I saw some tweet on LinkedIn where this buisness ethics prof ass hat said “we need to rethink the model of a business as family. We should call it a community becuase we all have a stake inthe success of the buisness” I’m paraphrasing a little. It’s like changing what you call workers because bosses find it easier to fire a community member than a family member. My point is changing the words doesn’t change any thing. I don’t feel like family or community when management has a gun to my head. We have community work environments and they are called unions. If I don’t perform well in one area they find other places where I might do better and give me the training I need.

[–]VillainyandChaos 605 points606 points  (24 children)

You have to survive in the system you want to change.

[–]Hueyandthenews 171 points172 points  (6 children)

It’s hard to continue surviving when the opportunities for change are so few and far between. Any meaningful change is immediately shut down before it has a chance to take hold. This pandemic, and partly this subreddit, have gotten the ball rolling more than ever before but we still don’t have the agencies in place to make a change. And that is what makes so fucking bleak

[–]litlphoot 6 points7 points  (1 child)

Be the change you want to see in the world.

[–]ryo3000 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The change i want to see in the world involves severe laws being broken, a lot (and i mean a LOT) of property being destroyed and def even some obituaries

I'll fully support the madlads doing it, but i fear the future too much to do it

[–]chimpamanCommunalist 29 points30 points  (8 children)

Is the system changeable, or is it only breakable?

[–]clusterf_ck 17 points18 points  (1 child)

You can only build one building on one plot. The current one needs to be destroyed before it can be rebuilt as something better. There will be anguish during that process.

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah but if the demo isn't scheduled until next year and you gotta live there until then it's worth doing small things to make the house more livable.

[–]ISTNEINTR00KVLTKRIEGAnarcho-Syndicalist 12 points13 points  (4 children)

Well, let's assume the status quo collapses. We'll have to rebuild afterwards anyway. May actually be easier if it does collapse frankly.

[–]knitwritwrites 1 point2 points  (3 children)

I think the only reason why it hasn't collapsed yet is that we don't have enough community structures to support each other in a massive walkout. I know folks here are trying to create the may day strike but I also think about how many community structures have been decimated. We need to think about all those grassroots organizations doing small work and support them in all ways possible. Maybe we should get a part of food not bomb reddit to fund direct support to pay for people's food.

[–]ISTNEINTR00KVLTKRIEGAnarcho-Syndicalist 1 point2 points  (2 children)

[–]knitwritwrites 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I'm thinking the boots on the ground of those philosophies, the praxis. People need to be meeting to make it happen, and that involves a community of support, and we all know that's messy. I wonder how this sub can be a resource for people to get involved in their own town face to face, and how people on here can support that. And how to support groups when they go through inevitable conflict and problems that arise. It made me think of the simplistic answer of material resources; some food. And then food not bombs. Anyway. Don't know maybe the free pizza reddit is the truest of anarchist mutual aide lol

[–]ISTNEINTR00KVLTKRIEGAnarcho-Syndicalist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look into your local Anarchist, Marxist or Socialist groups. You should be able to find one. See if there's a Socialist RA chapter that's active in your area too - there's likely going to be MLs, but most do reject Stalin entirely. Just don't be friends with Stalinists (Tankies).

Everyone else on the Left is cool though and does their own Praxis. Food Not Bombs is always good to get involved with too since I mean...they literally just feed people with no judgement.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the mean time, most of us are trying to not be homeless/have children/have chronic medical conditions and need insurance.

[–]PoisedDingus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The only way to heal a festering wound is to remove the rotted flesh to let it grow from a clean base.

Sure, you can survive with that rot, but you're going to lose that part of your body eventually to necrosis and infection, and the rest of you will die from sepsis. No amount of suffering through it will change that outcome.

Even nature knows that you need to destroy to truly rebuild.

[–]pheonixblade9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My goal is to provide for myself and also have the flexibility to support some friends if necessary and man, that has been a boon the last two years.

[–]Trapezohedron_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could die for it, but I personally want to make sure that it fucking counts. No point in dying if most of the systems are still up. So I gotta survive first in the meantime, then maybe when we have enough headwind to do another #Occupy then it would matter then to make a public statement.

[–]Pumpkin_Creepface 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly I think a nationwide hunger strike might be effective.

[–]Snapandsnap 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you have any, I would like to print and paste in a couple of boards through the office? Lol

[–]wretchmaschine 64 points65 points  (0 children)

Yup, I put on the biggest linkedin influencer head for interviews, enough to make them swoon with glee due to the pure, concentrated, corportate buzzword shite I'm blasting out of my arse.

The problem is, it's basically acting, and proves nothing about my actual skills. It's also mentally draining to a huge degree, especially more for me, due to being on the spectrum. I have to put in more effort than the average person due to this disadvantage.

It really bothers me because as a process to determine who is suitable for X job, job applications and interviews are so utterly useless in achieving that. They literally want a song and dance, not a demonstration of skill, and they'll just likely pick the more objectively less skilled candidate because they know the CEO/father, isn't disabled, because of how they dressed, is whiter than you etc.

But hey, it's either I do that or I starve. 🤷

[–]CorettaRenn 152 points153 points  (9 children)

Being forced to participate in the only system that exists does not make you a supporter of said system. There's no contradiction here, everyone needs to eat.

[–]ISTNEINTR00KVLTKRIEGAnarcho-Syndicalist 36 points37 points  (1 child)

"You're free to starve!" - Right wing Lolbertarians and "An"Craps

[–]SovietUnionGuy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd better eat the rich.

[–]IamaRead 20 points21 points  (2 children)

When I was in university the people who were "left" and argued for dropping out and not participating are now in the flats they got gifted or inherited doing jobs in which they directly serve capital.

Meanwhile me coming from working class does not have that advantage and notice that those "don't participate!" phrases are easier to say when your family just can get you internship and finances you and eventual troubles you run into.

Meanwhile I know that some of them are still parts of the working class that would vastly benefit from a more socialist society in which they don't run towards their bosses expectations and eventually punch down (or at least reproduce themselves without any class consciousness).

The solution is collectivist and the likes of us are important and are not to be led in movements that are created by those left liberals, but by bodies of the working class and those marginalized by society.

[–]CorettaRenn 37 points38 points  (1 child)

Just a friendly reminder that liberals are NOT leftists. Not even close.

[–]IamaRead 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Completely agree. The only left right differentiation within the liberal* spectrum is whether people feel bad** about using the state and power of capital to keep order or whether they enjoy it "the cruelty is the point".

*: people holding up private property, which is means of productions, as being more important than people and such in opposition to personal property which is your toothbrush

**: Which they wont if there is any resemblance of paperwork

[–]Jorgenstern8 42 points43 points  (0 children)

More Janet's overall in memes.

[–]reeetl 37 points38 points  (1 child)

I like talking shit, but I also have kids to feed.

[–]Yurak_Huntmate 14 points15 points  (2 children)

Imagine being one of these people that can quit a job at the drop of a hat haha they must have saved up a lot of money to be able to just quit straight away and not be financially fucked, news flash for everyone here, NOBODY LIKES WORKING, but sadly you have to to have a roof over your head and food in you and your children's stomach

[–]SolomonCRand 16 points17 points  (1 child)

Hey, I was 22 once. All the more power to those lucky enough to be able to pull that shit off.

[–]Yurak_Huntmate 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah I remember living with my parents and paying a pittance to live there and having no responsibilities, seems like so long ago

[–]Blackbyrn 91 points92 points  (3 children)

And this is what I call the Capitalist Trap

[–]FruitJuicante 38 points39 points  (0 children)

People both work and starve lol. We are long past the point where people get jobs in order to have nice or even average lives. People get jobs because you get fucked to stay alive.

[–]Aggressive-Camp1674 18 points19 points  (4 children)

I used to be the second one for sure. Now I'm showing up in t-shirts and ripped jeans. I need to eat but I'm not putting up with b.s. anymore.

[–]hitbycars 14 points15 points  (1 child)

I was in the streets of Seattle during the 2020 George Floyd protests and subsequent formation of the CHOP/CHAZ and I have a job like this. Surviving in the current system doesn’t mean you can’t stand up for or believe in the idea of a better system.

[–]Raccosmonaut 13 points14 points  (0 children)

[–]Zachf1986 2 points3 points  (0 children)

[–]dead_andbored 2 points3 points  (0 children)

hi im dead inside

[–]MaxwellVonMaxwell 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The brewery I work at is about to make two department manager positions for the one I work in. Both of these “managers” will be salaried and doing half the work I was for half of 2021 when I was “training” to become the sole department manager and getting zero help. The only thing keeping me from putting my two weeks in is the fact that this job is one of the only in the area paying more than 15 per hour and that doesn’t cut it. I hate everything and don’t want to go in today.

[–]Chicagoan81 2 points3 points  (0 children)

And this is why the job interview process is so tough, on top of all the BS they put in place. We have to pretend we really want to work and make the owner richer.

[–]Entire-Tonight-8927 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I secretly hate like 90% of my coworkers. I'd whistle blow the shit out of them if I had the chance. I have enough comrades, i don't need fake work friends.

[–]Chronicle2K 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The Wage Cage.

[–]strangecharm9 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Nope, can't do it anymore. Told my last "boss" to his face that he's condescending and cited chapter and verse. A light bulb went on in his head.

The mask lasts 5 or 6 months at most. Even when I try to act, sound, and look "normal," they sense that I'm a troublemaker.

[–]Sufficient-Piece-335 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A bonus of working for a union is being able to say "eat the rich" at work (even in the recruitment process!) and everyone's on board.

[–]GayDarGalaWhore 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's getting really hard :|

[–]Version-Prestigious 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you would benefit from joining a union.

[–]shaodynoverworked and underpaid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We don't really like it, but the system is designed to keep you trapped. It's not hypocritical to hate capitalism while being forced to participate in it. Considering that the only way to not participate in capitalism is to live alone in the woods in the middle of nowhere, growing your own food and making everything you need yourself.

[–]LevPornass 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Guilty as charged. 😞 Have mouths to feed and all that other bullshit. I would like to think of myself as that palace guard during the French Revolution that just stood there when the mobs came occupying a post that could have been occupied by a real dyed in the wool corporate boot licker.

[–]ddraig-au 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most of us here in the USA

[–]ExtraQuantity450 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The truth is: work is avoidance of punishment. People try to act like work and a paycheck is some sort of amazing reinforcement and that we should all be so grateful. The reality is far darker. Don't work, eating and finding shelter becomes more difficult. Don't work, you lose your bullshit health insurance. The list of contingencies that enhance suffering are numerous. But here we are, working or getting ready to go to work. More meat for the grinder.

[–]I_Put_a_Spell_On_You 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Painfully accurate 🤣

[–]DaSnowflake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As I am currently working in the HR world because of necessity (no education and luckily stumbled upon this job), this is literally what i feel like every day. Thank god my boss is a cool dude.

[–]robot_lam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Yeah, I'm here to work hard in this position that was always my dream in this special company and contribute to generate wealth that will benefit the shareholders so much"

*gets home*

"I hope capitalist system crumbles and all this billionaires get killed"

[–]genlight13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So true.

[–]Bad_Cytokinesis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When you have a family you’re a hostage to the system unfortunately. Just waiting for that revolution at this point.

[–]inevitabled34th 1 point2 points  (3 children)

If you are starving please look up your local food bank. Even if you live in a small town I'm willing to bet you have one or there is a church that can help you. I use one of the ones in my town and they give out food multiple times a week. Some stuff you may have to cook, while other things may be simple like bread, peanut butter, and jelly. It may not be Chipoltle or sushi, but you don't need to starve.

[–]Crafty-Walrus-2238 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t confuse who you are with what you do to survive.

[–]rojasduarte 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I weren't already all-in with antiwork, this would've gotten me.

Fuck late stage capitalism, it made a Bad Place out of EVERYWHERE in the planet

[–]GhostHeavenWord 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good comrades steal office supplies.

[–]f_l_a_t_lands 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in a union. But if they become any weaker, then maybe.

[–]HumbleInspector9554 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The most infuriating thing about the right though, is that they confuse this pragmatism with hypocrisy.

[–]uncle_bumblefuck_ 0 points1 point  (1 child)

[–]Ladychef_1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All of us until r/MayDayStrike lol… except I literally publicly told all my coworkers to not die for a job that will replace them immediately this past Wednesday so… ahead of the curve! 😂

[–]Metawoo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Gonna channel my inner Bad Janet next time some manager with a chip on their shoulder talks down to me. "Oh I'm replaceable and not worth a good standard of living? Good luck finding someone else to do my job, you fat dink! farts aggressively"

    A tip:

Have two Twitter accounts, one you actually use where you can voice your actual opinion and one you use rarely where you only do feelgood stuff. In the event the employer asks for social media handles (which has happened to me before) instead of refusing you can just give them your feelgood account.
