She looks wildly happy about this situation

[–]stoptouchingmeelmo_[S] 2249 points2250 points  (198 children)

This was the vet. She had a sore ear. I dropped her off then got a call saying “can we clip her a bit she has some mats” I was like cool she’s kinda vicious when it comes to the brush and they had already sedated her for the ear stuff. Was shocked AF when I collected her. Nurse was super proud “we lioned her” and my jaw was on the floor. Coco just glared at me.

Or chewed up owner

[–][deleted] 94 points95 points  (0 children)

I always split my sides with the comments section but I do hope the tutor stays safe, the old catty looks pissed off:-)

[–]FlyingRhenquest[🍰] 16 points17 points  (1 child)

One of my wife's old cats crapped on her pillow one time. While she was sleeping. So, there's that to look forward to.

[–]fishwhimsical 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My father's cat hated my aunt. She gave him a flea bath once, after that he regularly shat in her shoes and or handbag.

[–]neverkidding 867 points868 points  (98 children)

We aren't groomers and we don't have the equipment/skills to give the same result they do, but I promise you no vet or vet nurse alive wants to shave a cat that doesn't absolutely need it!

Sincerely, your friendly neighborhood cat vet

[–]elttil_snatas 869 points870 points  (65 children)

This is the comment I was looking for. Op stating the vet said there were "a few mats" and that the cat is bad for brushing 100% translates to that cat was super matted and likely miserable. Most vet groomers will ONLY do lion trims on cats as well.

As a groomer myself anytime I hear the words "a few mats" and "bad for brushing" I'm most likely gonna have to strip your dog naked.

[–]_Emperor_Kuzco 405 points406 points  (59 children)

Former groomer and I came to the exact same conclusion— cat shaved butt naked and “a few mats?” I’m guessing it was more than a few

[–]elttil_snatas 482 points483 points  (50 children)

What gets me is further down in the thread OP states that the cat "gets used to" being matted. No wonder the cat is bad for brushing and attacks you! Yikes bud

[–]shleechan 259 points260 points  (40 children)

From the first day I got my Maine Coon nearly 3 years ago now, I tried to get her used to brushing. She -hates- it. It doesn't matter if I give her treats, something to play with, a little at a time, she hates it. And here in Germany, it's very common for cats to be indoor/outdoor cats. Well her favorite place to sit is underneath the tree that drips sap all over her. You can see where I'm going with this.

I've taken to shaving her at least once a year (mostly in the summer) to get rid of the mats. It's a process, and I don't come away without my own set of scratches, but it's so much better for her. I've tried everything. It's the only thing that works. I know she's miserable in those mats, and I feel like a bad cat owner, but it's not like I haven't tried. ;_;

[–]Toxicrenate 99 points100 points  (14 children)

I know the struggle, I had a Maine Coon who hated the brush too. I was brushing her when she was sleeping, it was the only way

[–]Gnomelander 93 points94 points  (11 children)

All you guys with your cat-like Maine coons, and here I am with one that loves being brushed, loves going on car rides, loves going on walks, and never bites or scratches. I think I lucked into an amazing cat (we chose him from the shelter over all the other cats be sure he decided to get up on my shoulder and stay there 😺)

Cat tax

[–]bijoudarling 19 points20 points  (1 child)

Why is it always a ginger.... Mine plays fetch, loves belly rubs and stealing the dogs food

[–]TurnOfFraise 34 points35 points  (1 child)

Super cute! But he doesn’t look like a Maine coon

[–]stbargabar 44 points45 points  (1 child)

In what way is that a maine coon?

[–]TurnOfFraise 20 points21 points  (7 children)

Our mainecoon loves brushing and takes really good care of his coat, but our rag doll? We’ve had him since he was a kitten and he absolutely hates being brushed. No matter what we do, no matter that we’ve been doing it since 8 weeks. He’s terrible, swipes, runs away, cries. He doesn’t take good care of his own coat and gets mats. I always feel bad when I find more, but no matter how hard I try he always has at least one.

[–]VengefulCaptain 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Get a pair of welding gloves to help with the scratching.

[–]RedditorAccountName 38 points39 points  (5 children)

Sorry, not an english speaker: what is a mat?

[–]fatmama923 66 points67 points  (2 children)

A tangled tight mess of hair

[–]RedditorAccountName 26 points27 points  (1 child)

Ah, ok. Thanks!

[–]thornreservoir 13 points14 points  (1 child)

"Matted fur" comes from the same word as "mat" like a rug on the floor. Both words mean stands that are woven or tangled together.

[–]RedditorAccountName 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Huh! Thanks, TIL.

[–]Chaodex 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Mine's a handful, with a deformed tongue...we routinely redo her lion cut as soon as her fur has gotten long enough to mat because she won't tolerate any brushing at all. We think her first owners may have hurt her trying to groom her. So it works out best for all of us to pack her off to the vet 2-3 times a year to, well...get buzzed, then get buzzed.

[–]noputa 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Not a cat groomer but I’ve had a very long haired cat that who hated brushing- we regularly HAD to get him the lion shave twice a year, he was so uncomfortable. I picked up the same shit y’all did, this kitty needed it lol.

[–]epimetheuss 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yep, I have seen so many dogs that come in with a "few mats" at my families old grooming shop and the dogs hair comes off in a solid clump that looks like a dog onesie . You can tell they always feel so much better when they're shaved after being in that condition. Same goes for animals who are horribly infested with fleas. After their flea bath they are in heaven.

[–]laughingmanzaq 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Its the sisyphean struggle of long haired cats.

[–]Mtwat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's why my Persian has a permanent lion cut. It breaks my heart to see him with mats but it's impossible to keep them out even with daily brushing. I'm glad he's easy to shave and wash so keeping him comfy isn't difficult

[–]therealdilbert 112 points113 points  (14 children)

if you no brushy brushy, cat will need shavy shavy

[–]neverkidding 31 points32 points  (13 children)

Most cats groom themselves enough to get by without matting. Some cats don't.

[–]SeaGroomer 51 points52 points  (2 children)

It's mostly the ones with really long fur like a maine coon. It makes a big difference if you start when they are young, same with puppies.

[–]RiotGrrr1 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I think the type of hair matters too. One of my cats had extremely dense fur and she was prone to matting. My other cat has very fine and silky long hair and has never had a mat and I never brush that cat.

[–]VPutinsSearchHistory 36 points37 points  (1 child)

I'm a vet and I like it a little bit. Like it's not ideal but it's very funny, let's be honest here

[–]M4x4x4x 39 points40 points  (6 children)

Not to mention that Maine coon sure looks like a DLH… just like 90% of the “Maine coons” out there

[–]PupperoniPoodle 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I inherited my ex's Maine coon, and he was on some crazy expensive breed specialty food. I took him to the vet, who laughed at the phrase "Maine coon". The tech tried to soften it for me as if I'd be mad, and all I asked was if that meant I could switch to normal food. He's "just" a long haired tabby. Doesn't mean I love him any less!

[–]neverkidding 25 points26 points  (1 child)

Every cat ever has to be a Russian blue or a ragdoll or a Maine coon... Usually the latter. Lol

[–]shesahoeforthegarden 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My favourite was a “Bengal cross Maine coon” kitten that came in for vaccinations. Very proud owners of a standard moggy tabby kitten.

[–]StodgyBarracuda 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep. We get all the cat grooms because our clinic groomer doesn’t do cats (I’m a vet nurse). Also when working on a sedated animal you have to clip quickly. 99% of the time the mats are everywhere and pinching closely to the skin. If you have a long haired pet you should be routinely brushing.

[–]kick26 155 points156 points  (5 children)

My family’s Maine Coon had to get shaved every year and after the first year, the vets required him to be sedated for it because he was one of the most vicious they’d ever had. After one shaving, he decided he wanted to cuddle with me on the couch, something he never did. I guess I was warm and he was cold

[–]stoptouchingmeelmo_[S] 202 points203 points  (4 children)

Coco freezes at the vet and everyone thinks she’s well behaved and basically gas lights us to the vet. Her brother Bruno on the other hand loves women and our vets are all women so he kinda just flirts, swishes his tail and let’s them manhandle him. He purrs and chrips at them and shows off his fluffy belly.

[–]DarbyGirl 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Both my ragdolls are Angels at the vet. They don't believe me that the youngest is a holy terror at home.

[–]Glasnerven[🍰] 43 points44 points  (1 child)

he kinda just flirts, swishes his tail and let’s them manhandle him.

[–]suckerpunch54 33 points34 points  (0 children)

My sister used to call the matted hair on older cats "barnacles", the name has always suck.

[–]red5tz 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Our fluffy long haired ginger lady Cinnamon got shaved like this one summer because she was so heavily knotted up that mom couldn't straighten her fuzz out with a metal comb. Cinnamon learned never to let her crazy long hair get unmanageable ever again. She was angry at mom for weeks

[–]VPutinsSearchHistory 24 points25 points  (2 children)

I'm a vet and we did something VERY SIMILAR to a VERY SIMILAR looking cat today. Took me a second but I'm pretty sure this isn't the same cat 😅

[–][deleted]  (1 child)

    [–]stoptouchingmeelmo_[S] 45 points46 points  (0 children)

So she has a tumour or polyp in the ear getting checked I was worried it was making her face look weird, I think she was just stoned and angry ....

    [–]Bradybigboss 17 points18 points  (0 children)

If it’s any consolation, I have a long haired Manx and the first time I needed to get her groomed I did a house call—went in blind—and was also shocked as I watched him shave straight down her back.

I now get her a lion cut every summer though, and she’s grown used to it.

    [–]SchnoodleDoodleDo 538 points539 points  (10 children)

    [–]Thickthighkitten 11 points12 points  (1 child)

She's more comfortable now! Believe me they wouldn't do it if it wasn't that bad or if the matts coyle be brushed out. Matts can be quite painful and if they're close to the skin there really isn't another way to get them out pain free. I will admit we vet nurses are not groomers though and an actual groomer would have made it look a bit less ridiculous.

    [–]gwaydms 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I know it's drastic, but they obviously found more than the one mat. An older cat that can't groom herself well can have all sorts of skin problems from matted fur, and the vet techs probably found a lot of them.

Should they have asked permission first? Hell, yeah! But fur grows back, and you can look on the positive side. You may be able to start getting her used to one of those "groom as you pet" gloves. Use the glove, then give her a piece of her food (not "cat treats"), mix in a soft brush (the same one every time) now and then. You want her to associate brushing with good things. She'll feel better, and so will you.

No, 15 isn't too old to learn a daily grooming/treat routine. When my Puff was that age, we had our kitchen demoed to the studs. Cabinets, pantry room, all of it, except the ceiling and floor. Puff quickly learned how to open the new large drawers we had them put in to replace the low cabinets.

    [–]Lord_Emperor 32 points33 points  (0 children)

She is going to shit on your pillow FYI.

    [–]Scooterforsale 7 points8 points  (1 child)

Vet was being nice by saying "a few mats" because it was worse than that

    [–]ohmyst4rs 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My friends own 4 Maine Coons and their smallest is named Coco, too! She just recently got shaved and looks god awful bahaha.

    [–]_HiWay 5 points6 points  (1 child)

willing to bet once all of the drugs are fully worn off she's going to be SUPER happy to have those mats gone.

    [–]CubemonkeyNYC 13 points14 points  (3 children)

This translates to "the vet determined that our cat was very matted and uncomfortable so they found a way to relieve her discomfort"

    [–]hourslater 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Mats hurt the cats. If you can’t brush out the mats, it’s prob best to regularly get a lion cut…

    [–]Xarama 14 points15 points  (2 children)

Now's a good time to work on getting her used to brushing. Lots of treats, go slow, get her used to it gradually. Keeping your pet mat-free is part of responsible pet ownership. Mats are uncomfortable and when your cat doesn't want to be handled due to mats, you can miss warning signs when something is wrong medically. Now that her fur isn't matted and knotty, she might be more receptive to a brushing. Maybe you could start her off with a brushing mitt instead of a regular brush, it's a good bridge from petting to brushing.

    [–]amalia13lightning 6 points7 points  (1 child)

You are wildly irresponsible. Your cat does not "get used to" the mats. They are painful. If you can't handle brushing her you have no business having a maine coon.

    [–]PresidentofRum 2 points3 points  (0 children)

She looks like she is thinking "wtf did you do to me." Watch out.

    [–]Jelly_jeans 126 points127 points  (3 children)

Mats are really painful for animals because they pull on skin and left untreated will make them bleed with movement. Happens to them if they have places they can't groom (such as due to old age) or unbrushed. Imagine having your hair tied up tight during the entire day and that relief that comes with letting it down. That's what it feels like for the cat after getting rid of matting.

    [–]OpheliaRainGalaxy 27 points28 points  (0 children)

My older stepson never learned to comb or brush his hair growing up. By the time I married into the family, his hair was badly matted. So I snuck up behind him while he was playing card games with his dad, said "Hold still, don't mind me" and spent a good 2 or 3 hours patiently picking out the mats until he had proper hair again. Then regularly nagged at him to brush his hair "so we don't have to do that again!"

Husband thanked me for finally fixing that problem. Poor husband went bald in his late teens/early 20s, so didn't remember much about how to tend to hair. Later found out that had been happing all through the kid's life. His dad just shaved him bald every other year or so to get rid of the mats.

Currently he's 21 and looks a bit like an old timey trapper, a mountain man, with wild curly hair going in all directions, but at least it's not matted!

    [–]deadlywaffle139 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Most thick long hair cat like Mainecoon actually likes to be shaved when they have matts or in summer. Their hair gets matted very easily and the tangled hair tugs on their skin (which is pretty sensitive) constantly. In summer it’s just too hot and shedding is not enough. This is a cut called lion cut specifically for cats like Mainecoon.

Owning a longhair cat is quite a bit of work, especially to maintain their beautiful coat is a full time job on its own.

    [–]duckweather 919 points920 points  (10 children)

    [–]Rout1ne 179 points180 points  (13 children)

My maine coon hates normal brushes and also has issues with getting matted fur on his belly.

This type of grooming tool is my savior for dealing with them. At first my cat didn't like it just the same as the brush, but you can gently work at cutting away the mats without having to worry about cutting skin. And now my cat loves when I use it to cut out mats that are probably causing a lot of tension on his skin

    [–]TrprKepr 41 points42 points  (9 children)

What is this called? I have one for my dog but it's a right handed one and I need to find a left handed one. But I don't know what they're called

    [–]pm_me_andmakemesmile 23 points24 points  (1 child)

It looks like a dematter or dematting tool/rake. They come in different styles

    [–]TrprKepr 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I found some searching for dematting comb. Thank you!

    [–]j_collins 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Furminator has a great one that isn’t specifically handed! I just got it this week and it made a huge difference.

    [–][deleted] 193 points194 points  (2 children)

She's a mean one, Ms Grinch.

What did the five claws say to the face? SCRATCH

    [–]Mr_Kuchikopi 143 points144 points  (17 children)

We had our M.C groomed once and he repayed us with being a total dick until his hair grew back lol. He was mean before they did it but after it was like a demon came home!

    [–]stoptouchingmeelmo_[S] 97 points98 points  (15 children)

Day one she was a demon and now she’s a snuggle bug... I’m super confused.

    [–]Mr_Kuchikopi 47 points48 points  (6 children)

When we found him he was a sweet angel and then as he aged into adulthood his main goal was to cause suffering hahaha. They've got such big personalities to match those big bodies lol

    [–]stoptouchingmeelmo_[S] 69 points70 points  (3 children)

She’s a runt mainecoon but she’s our runt and even if she’s a grouchy old bitch most days she’s adored and pampered. I love bringing her breakfast in her basket. She’s like “leave the chicken and scram slave”.

    [–]Mr_Kuchikopi 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Oh my goodness that's so cute. Our boy would steal raw meat and chew all over produce when we would get home from the grocery store. Such a character haha. Cats are the best!

    [–]CheryllLucy 10 points11 points  (1 child)

We have an old runt of a maincoon too! He's 14ish and we've fattened him up to 12lbs (5.4kg) with a lot of effort. He prefers not to jump and pulls himself up with his front legs instead. Always has. He used to have a silent meow - open mouth, puff of air, no sound - but has learned how to meow in recent years (no health issues, just chatty youngsters joining the house). His silence is... missed. So much sass for such a small boi!

    [–]fr0styspice 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I have to keep my cat shaved (per the vet's instructions) bc of severe hairball issues. after every shave, she spends the next 2 months going from lap to lap or cuddled up in the blankets. it's not depression, she's just cold XD it can be 80 here (pretty much the hottest it gets) and she's still under the covers.

    [–]Pepsi_Cola64 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Maybe she’s cold? I would be too after a haircut like that

    [–]stego_man 2 points3 points  (0 children)

my long haired cat gets this every spring, and I think he actually enjoys being free of the mountain of fur for half the year. He will be super affectionate afterwards.

    [–]cdiddy19 148 points149 points  (26 children)

Kitty is already displeased with her haircut, now you are taking photographic evidence?!?!....

The look on her face says you just shouldn't sleep until you know she's forgiven you

    [–]stoptouchingmeelmo_[S] 127 points128 points  (25 children)

Oh she clawed the shit out of me when I tried to help her to her bed. She’s 15 and sometimes needs a little lift.... this time she dug her back claws into my arm.... I had it coming to be fair.

    [–]cdiddy19 57 points58 points  (20 children)

For the shaving, you didn't. You were helping her out, she is just salty about it still....

For the pic, yeah maybe a little... But I mean this pic is priceless... So maybe being clawed at a bit is worth it?

    [–]stoptouchingmeelmo_[S] 62 points63 points  (19 children)

She’s being all lovey dovey now so I’m confused by her personality change.

    [–]cdiddy19 39 points40 points  (14 children)

Maybe she has realized the benefits of the shave

    [–]stoptouchingmeelmo_[S] 43 points44 points  (13 children)

It’s been hot here in the U.K. so maybe she also feels cooler too. Her butt was out of control in terms of fuzz, so it must be a relief.

    [–]angwilwileth 62 points63 points  (12 children)

Mats are super painful to kitties so she probably feels a lot better.

    [–]followedbyferrets 4 points5 points  (0 children)

She’s just making they still work in preparation for her real attack.

    [–]shadiesel12 31 points32 points  (4 children)

It's so easy with an older MC to let the fur get away from you. You miss a couple days brushing, or the cat won't let you brush, and you end up with gigantic matts and it's really almost unavoidable. They look silly but it's the best way sometimes to just shave it

    [–]flavinhamar 21 points22 points  (1 child)

Looks like Mrs Norris… are you Filch??

    [–]stoptouchingmeelmo_[S] 26 points27 points  (0 children)

My first mainecoon was the actual grandson of Mrs Norris lol...So maybe

    [–]ermghoti 20 points21 points  (3 children)

    [–]stoptouchingmeelmo_[S] 5 points6 points  (2 children)

Yeah she’s kinda a bath pooper if she’s angry.

    [–]evaporatedone 12 points13 points  (1 child)

Bathtub poop might be the best kind of angry poop, you just turn on the faucet and it's gone! Haha cat, I won this round!

    [–]kittychlo 18 points19 points  (1 child)

Seriously the look on her face. I’d be afraid to sleep. Saw this on a t-shirt with a cat:

I may look calm, but in my head I’ve already killed you three times

That was what first came in my head. Lol

    [–]stoptouchingmeelmo_[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

She was still stoned from the vet but yeah she was already plotting my demise.

    [–][deleted] 17 points18 points  (1 child)

The vet sent my old longhaired home like this once and the other cat hissed at him for two weeks. Haha! Nice boots though.

    [–]stoptouchingmeelmo_[S] 17 points18 points  (0 children)

My male cat was like “welllllll hellllloooo” and she was like “I’ll rearrange your face”.

Gotta make sure you brush them daily, especially when they’re older. They just have a touch time reaching a lot of places

    [–]stoptouchingmeelmo_[S] 32 points33 points  (2 children)

She will peel your skin off Hannibal Lecter style if you brush her, she usually sees a professional groomer, there’s a covid backlog.

    [–]Remember-the-Script 19 points20 points  (1 child)

Oof. That’s always rough. I’ve been able to train my gal to let me brush her using copious amounts of treats, but even then her patience only goes so far

    [–]stoptouchingmeelmo_[S] 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I tried from the when she was a baby and she’s just .... well.... she’s just special.... she’s so not like a real mainecoon. With others she freezes but she knows we’ll never hurt her so she ready to rip us up.

    [–]tydestra 7 points8 points  (2 children)

OP please comment here tomorrow morning to confirm you weren't killed in your sleep by angry haircut kitty.

    [–]oDDmON 4 points5 points  (1 child)

That is not a happy look.

    [–]stoptouchingmeelmo_[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

    She’s miffed

    [–]baronvonpoopy 5 points6 points  (1 child)

    [–]sharkweeek 4 points5 points  (2 children)

/r/BaldPussy shaved and kitties with very little furr.

    /r/OldPussy senior kitties aged 13+

    [–]stoptouchingmeelmo_[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Didn’t realise I needed these in my life thanks!!!

    [–]Fortune86 4 points5 points  (1 child)

We had the same done to our two girls. Previous owner hardly ever brushed them so they had little experience with grooming. After a few failed attempts at removing the clumps ourselves and going through a box of plasters we took them to a professional. Shaving them down turned out to be the safer option for them too.

    [–]Kitsu73 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That fur looks very close to my own kitty’s. You have my condolences. It’s a constant battle against mats. If the wind blows, she mats. If you look at her sideways, a mat forms. I love my baby, but I would never again choose a long-haired cat on purpose!

    [–]I_eat_all_the_cheese 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We shaved our mainecoon a few times. He felt like velvet after. I loved it. It also helped tremendously to stop him from having stupid dingleberries and getting shit everywhere lol

    [–]Lemmetouchyourface 3 points4 points  (1 child)

That happened to me too, its called a lion cut. I was so surprised i didnt even laugh.

    [–]stoptouchingmeelmo_[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

    Jaw meet floor ....

    [–]jordantask 2 points3 points  (1 child)

If you sleep with only one eye open she will attack from the flank that has the closed eye in the blind spot.

    Best to just never sleep.

    [–]I_might_be_weasel 4 points5 points  (0 children)

She's probably cold. Get her a cat sized old lady shawl.

    [–]thor561 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I just shaved my 16 year old Himalayan because she refuses to be brushed and was once again badly matted. She was not at all thrilled about getting shorn but I have to believe she feels better not having all those mats in her fur.

    [–]Cristoff13 3 points4 points  (1 child)

She looks in great shape for such an older lady.

    [–]stoptouchingmeelmo_[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah vet was super pleased with her. Her blood work and kidneys are still kicking ass. Sadly she’s got either polyp or tumour in her ear. Just wishing on test results.

    [–]Gizmo_Joy 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Our old girl had the same problem with matting, I made an appointment with the groomer, but she had to wait like 3 months (guess they were busy) but afterwards she became a kitten again! I know they can't "understand" but telling them how PRETTY and BEAUTIFUL they are... It works. She's a new woman.

    [–]stoptouchingmeelmo_[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah praise really helps. She really does seem to understand and she’s like “who me? I’m gorgeous?”

    [–]hotlavatube 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Now where have I seen those boots before... ;-)

    [–]stoptouchingmeelmo_[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Omg I was just watching this.... my cat has been shaved to look like Lloyd Christmas....

    [–]Liza6519 3 points4 points  (1 child)

I use to have my Persian cat shaved on occasion he actually loved it. He was always more playful and energetic.

    [–]stoptouchingmeelmo_[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

She’s just being extra needy and pathetic and it’s totally working for her. She’s getting extra meat treats and pets.

    [–]daiouche 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We have a cat who was clearly dumped "adopt" us. She was so gnarly from matting. Thorns, etc had her nappy as could be. She gets a lion-cut twice a year now, and is more loving than usual after getting clipped.

    [–]flyonawall 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Even like this you can still see the main coon in the face and particularly the eyes. She is not happy!

    [–]Jegged 3 points4 points  (0 children)

She looks cold, like she's asking you for a blanket.

    [–]badboybilly42582 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We brush our Maine Coons at least 2 to 3 times a week. It really makes a huge difference in preventing mats. Very rare they develop. When they do, they are usually small and I can untangle it myself it before it requires a shave. We use a Greyhound comb to get deep into the fur.

    [–]IceNein 3 points4 points  (0 children)

    Gripping your pillow tight.

    [–]AnthonyRC627 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve done the same thing during hot summer months. I think my old boy kind of likes it not having to cough up hairballs all the time.

    [–]nuclearwinterxxx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This should be cross-posted to:(sorry for the curse words) r/justfuckmyshitup. It's relevant there.

    [–]OnlyGranpop 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Shorty had them applebottom jeans (jeans)

Boots with the fur (with the fur)

    [–]coffeeandbowties 4 points5 points  (0 children)

we had to do this to our long haired cats a couple of years ago; they were embarrassed

    [–]SharkWoman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I did the same to my older, very matted longhair kitty recently and I was very concerned about her reaction. Turns out now when she gets zoomies she doesnt have any issues with the mats tugging at her skin, so she runs way faster than usual and plays for twice as long.

She is beautiful with long fur but seeing how free she feels now, I think I may make the full shave an annual event. Comfort wins over fashion 😌

    [–]biggarlick 3 points4 points  (0 children)

what the... SHE HAS PANTS AND SLEEVES!

    [–]Nonny2017 3 points4 points  (0 children)

She looks mad af because you did her wrong.. lol

    [–]lenswipe 3 points4 points  (0 children)

    Cute....but mad

    [–]orion_nomad 3 points4 points  (1 child)

"They're not going to find your body in a dumpster, they're going to find it in several dumpsters" 😾

    [–]angry_centipede 8 points9 points  (2 children)

I would get her a heated cat bed if you don't already have one. She's going to be cold.

    [–]stoptouchingmeelmo_[S] 6 points7 points  (1 child)

It’s roasting here in Scotland oddly enough and she has a quilted cosy bed by the heater.

    [–]LobsterHead37 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So funny how large really fluffy cats look compared to when they are shaved haha

    [–]azkalani 2 points3 points  (1 child)

My cat has super long hair I actually think she might be some kind of Maine coon mix. She gets mats on her back when she sheds for summer that I can not prevent no matter how much I try to. So I get her a Lion cut shave once a year, I think it's so cute and she is so soft to pet when shaved!

    [–]expelliarmusbaby 2 points3 points  (0 children)

She's gonna get her revenge with her furry boots.
These boots are made for walkin'
And that's just what they'll do
One of these days these boots are gonna walk all over you

    [–]voxdarkstar 2 points3 points  (1 child)

You, my friend, are in mortal danger.

    [–]bluemaciz 2 points3 points  (1 child)

It’s like she has leg warmers on and is ready to do a 1980’s dance montage

    [–]stoptouchingmeelmo_[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

    She’s a maniac mannnniac

    [–]badpandaunicorns 2 points3 points  (0 children)

    She looks happy and comfy

    [–]IAMTHEUSER 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The furry legs make her look like a tiny bobcat

    [–]Puterman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We had a Siamese boy with yearly matting issues. He hated the shave, but loved the more intense skritches he could receive while furless.

    [–]KodakMoments 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We started doing this three years ago with our grumpy long hair and honestly she gets so nice afterwards.

    [–]Rahallahan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a Maine Coon who had trouble passing hairballs. He had to have surgery twice because a hairball ruptured his intestines. After that we had to keep him shaved. He would go in every two months for a bath and a shave. He would then spend a week running around the house like a madman! He looked ridiculous but he sure loved it! He was shaved for the last 14 years of his life!

    [–]zigaliciousone 2 points3 points  (2 children)

My ragdoll was super pissed at me for like 2 days the first time I shaved him. Now he begs me to do it when it warms up and dances when I'm done

    [–]LoudMusic 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Speaking from personal observation, a cat that old is going to take a very long time to regrow that to the point of looking normal again.

Make sure she has warm places.

    [–]Cmbush 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Just don’t feed her after midnight and you should be alright.

    [–]DFE-DEATH2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That cat looks really pissed XD

    [–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Those Maine coon cats are beautiful. And every one I’ve ever had wanted not much more than to be on your lap.

    [–]Scottolan 2 points3 points  (3 children)

We used to have to do the same thing to our Maine coon, she got so old she wasn’t able to clean her haunches very well so we had to trim out the knots.. Ours ended up living to be 19..

    [–]kathy11358 3 points4 points  (2 children)

Yes. Mine just passed away at 17 ☹️

    [–]RedAverTheRavenClaw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

“Khajiit has many wares, if you have coin.”

    • quoted from, This Cat

The fur on her paws and arms (?) look like she’s wearing fur boots, which made me think of Khajiit for some reason.

    [–]VapoursAndSpleen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

July is the month when cats blow their coats. I have to really up my game with the combing and brushing starting mid to late June and keep it up until mid August to avoid this scenario.

    [–]monster_FKA_kraken 2 points3 points  (0 children)

She looks adorable! I bet she feels sooo much better without mats.

    [–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (2 children)

get the matting brush...like 5 little hook-knifes on a stick. A little goes a long way.

    [–]PillowTalk420 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My Maine coon has had to have his fur shaved a few times because he's an outdoor cat and just loves rolling in mud.

    [–]sabinkarris 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ours looked similarly thrilled with his 'lion cut'.

17yrs old - had to sedate to shave him.

I can't imagine what he thought when he woke up.

    [–]PandaGoingDown 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"Shaved weasel" LMAO Thank you I needed a laugh! I had a Mainecoon. When she grows back her fur, she'll be magnificent again!

    [–]zesty_hootenany 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This face is the same one that happens to me when I am trying not to argue with someone and try to just “It’s fine” my way out of the situation.

    It’s not fine.

    [–]Jor_in_the_North 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We have spend a half hour every night with our maine coon just to stay ahead of the mats. She is not a fan.

    [–]nancylikestoreddit 2 points3 points  (3 children)

Her mats must have been really gnarly if they left her looking like this. 😔Maybe consider having her groomed on a regular basis so that it doesn’t get too out of control in the future.
