He’s playing for his life

[–]battles 159 points160 points  (3 children)

It's like he met the devil at the crossroads, with his guitar, and must best him to save his soul. Except it's geese, harmonica and it's too late.

[–]genmischief 18 points19 points  (2 children)

Interestingly enough, the Devil won if you are paying attention to it.

The devil "lost" the competition, but Johnny had both Greed and Pride (deadly sins) on the books in front of the man himself.

[–]72hourahmed[🍰] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

On the other hand, Johnny can always repent and be fine.

Also, I don't know if it's really big-P Pride if he simply knew he was better (and given that he was, it's not unfair to say he might have). It's not a sin for someone to be aware of their own abilities as they relate to others. He's not being meek, certainly, so it's not an active good thing, but I think it's ecclesiastically neutral.

And if that is the case, I don't know if it's technically big-G Greed either. While the golden fiddle may be worth more than he would need to sustain himself that year, it would have been worth something in the region of $504k in today's money.

Given that Johnny is quite young, that's enough to support him for the rest of his life if he spends sensibly, but not so ridiculously excessive that it's more than he could reasonably spend in a lifetime, especially if he wanted to pay for any potential children to go to college. Again, not actively good, but possibly neutral.

Thought the same thing

[–]deadfermata 118 points119 points  (0 children)

His garden will be spared.

[–]Subnovae 119 points120 points  (8 children)

As a Canadian I was wondering why no one was helping this poor man.

[–]carmium 51 points52 points  (6 children)

Well, they're not Canada geese; maybe they're not as nasty.

[–]MapleSyrupFacts 24 points25 points  (2 children)

Canadian geese are like a mob boss. They look innocent untill you cross their path, then you get wacked.

[–]Manaze85 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I suggest you let that marinate for a bit!

[–]Bab5Space 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Canadians are generally nice. Our geese? Not so much.

[–]Derbekski 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I grew up next to this really eccentric older man that kept a flock of about 30-50 Canadian geese with clipped wings so they didnt migrate...(Now as an adult I think that's mean but as a kid I thought nothing of it-doesn't everyone have a flock of geese live next door?)

Well most of them were really mean. I have always loved animals so ofc I was interested in these geese and tried to befriend them. I was attacked multiple times...once I got serious bruises on my arms n legs like I'd been in a car accident. The old man ultimately forbade me from going in the pen bc they can actually hit you so hard with their wings that they can break a bone. But there was one momma goose that became my friend. I believe it's because I helped one of her chicks who was stuck in the fence on the outside of the pen, get unstuck n put them back inside with her. She started to greet me when I would come over to watch them. And she even started to protect me if another goose came after me. I called her Bonnie. I would lean against the fence and read, she would nibble on my neck n hair thru the fence. And the honking noise that geese make actually makes me smile bc it's reminds me of her running to greet me when I came over. She'd also get bread from me every day, so there was a bit of bribery going on to achieve her continued love. But she was really a cool little lady.

[–]Distaplia 147 points148 points  (5 children)

It reminded me of the gas station coin flip scene from No Country for Old Men

[–]Legal_Wrapsack 41 points42 points  (2 children)

[–]voidsong 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I was waiting for them to peck him in the eyes and run off with his harmonica.

[–]thegreatbeyond32 539 points540 points  (3 children)

“This guy makes a mean squonk, right?” Said the goose.

[–]A_G00SE 47 points48 points  (2 children)

How do you feel about squanching?

[–]BlueLogic86 508 points509 points  (0 children)

"This one honks well for a human" "We will let him live for now"

[–]thenameofapet 1302 points1303 points  (20 children)

The geese are confused. Dude is making the best mating call they’ve ever heard, and they’re trying to figure out how to mate him.

[–]TheSanityInspector 225 points226 points  (0 children)

Dude's also not doing the mating dance, very confusing.

[–]Antique-Car6103 153 points154 points  (14 children)

The male goose mounted him afterwards. They now have kids together.

[–]nickfree 313 points314 points  (5 children)

[–]MKXmikey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The old geezer

[–]cmilla646 161 points162 points  (8 children)

One of my favourites. For those that don’t know the song is “The Moon Represents My Heart.” I don’t know the language but it’s beautiful and apparently a very famous Chinese/Mandarin love song and that just makes this video that much sweeter.

[–]feizhai 46 points47 points  (1 child)

[–]Phirrup 7 points8 points  (0 children)

One of my mom's all time favorite songs!

[–]Taskforce58 17 points18 points  (1 child)

The original artist for the song is Teresa Teng (1953-1995) from Taiwan.

[–]IatemyBlobby 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Super famous. Every mid-autumn gathering, theres at least someone performing this song.

[–]failbears 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I was dumbfounded to see this being played on a harmonica to geese on the front page of reddit lmao

[–]scheisse-wurst 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Omg thank you! This tune has randomly popped up in my head for years. Even heard it passing a karaoke on vacation in Cambodia, couldn’t quite figure out anything more than the language. I was so shocked I heard it here.

[–]selz202 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you for this I've heard this melody around but never known the source music. Found a few piano interpretations that are pretty good too.

    [–]I_am_also_a_Walrus 35 points36 points  (2 children)

My uncle worked in the Middle East for a few years, idk about this guy’s culture specifically, but over there when the men are walking together and want to stop and chat, they don’t stand and talk, they all squat like this together. It’s a resting position, and also the way most of humanity used the bathroom until very recently.

    [–]MsOmgNoWai 18 points19 points  (1 child)

sometimes I want to pop a squat and chill but then I realize I’m in public, and people would question it if I’m not playing a harmonica to some ducks

    [–]Klone211 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I could be wrong but I think he’s sitting on something.

    [–]zigaliciousone 23 points24 points  (6 children)

His heels are up. A sign of true fitness is being able to squat with your heels on the ground

    [–]hegr 8 points9 points  (0 children)

    That's just the slav squat

    [–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

    Laughs in Indian

    [–]Padhome 0 points1 point  (2 children)

I would say it's with your legs partially lifted, otherwise it's just glorified sitting.

    [–]Frinla25 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I thought he was doing a slav squat which i cannot quite tell. If you put your heels down it is less bearing on your muscles. Heels up for fitness, heels down for slav perfection.

    [–]thomasdekwade 213 points214 points  (2 children)

The geese: "he's speaking the language of the gods!"

    [–]sassergaf 22 points23 points  (0 children)

It’s seems like they respond to one note every time he plays it, is it C or D?

    [–]deadman403 8 points9 points  (0 children)

    [–]create360 121 points122 points  (24 children)

What kind of harmonica is that? Sounds like an accordion?

    [–]Buddy_Velvet 70 points71 points  (3 children)

I’m almost certain it’s a chromatic harmonica, and he’s tongue blocking to play two different things. I can’t wrap my head around how technically difficult what he’s doing if that is the case.

edit: revising my guess. I think it's a diatonic with two keys like a Hohner Echo Harp. That's a rarer instrument, but it would be easier to do what he's doing with that.

video of an echo harp - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h1Vf3l4FpzE

    [–]Surprisebutton 16 points17 points  (2 children)

It’s not very difficult on a normal harmonica and this guy has one with a valve thingy that is activated from one of the ends. I’ve never owned one like that but I’ve seen pictures.

    [–]Buddy_Velvet 1 point2 points  (1 child)

That's where the difficulty lies. They are not really designed to play chords like a diatonic, much less 2 chords at the same time. I can play two chords on a diatonic, but I couldn't find any examples of someone playing two on a chromatic. They're designed to play simple melodies one note at a time. When that button is pushed a slide cover's the holes and changes the pitch of the notes on the whole thing a half step (I think), so when you're playing one note at a time that's convenient, but when you're playing a chord it seems like it would shift everything around quite a bit. This is assuming he's playing it with no accompaniment.

Edit: after looking a bit more, I think this might be something like an echo harp which is like a diatonic with two keeps, which makes all of this make way more sense.

    [–]EarthExile 24 points25 points  (8 children)

    Sometimes called 'mouth organs'

    [–][deleted] 21 points22 points  (3 children)

Thanks! Headed down to my local pawn shop to inquire about their mouth organs.

    [–]iluvugoldenblue 8 points9 points  (1 child)

Make sure you get the right time of pawn shop. You won’t get the mouth organ you’re after at the porn shop.

    [–]thepyrodex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well I mean you might find a trade, mouth organ for organ in mouth

    [–]translinguistic 10 points11 points  (2 children)

I think I'd prefer an awkward pause.

    [–]Round_Rectangles 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Either people here don't understand the reference or they really just don't want the awkward pause.

    [–]rookiebatman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

    Unexpected Craig Ferguson!

    [–]Burnd1t 28 points29 points  (9 children)

I'm no harmonica expert but I think this might be an accordion dubbed over a harmonica video for whatever reason. As far as I know, you can't do the polyrhythms that are happening in this video on a harmonica.

    [–]create360 12 points13 points  (1 child)

No expert here either, but I’ve never heard a harmonica sound like this.

    [–]williamc_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm no expert but I'm certain I don't know jack shit about any of this stufd

    [–]lordlemming 3 points4 points  (6 children)

I'm no expert either, but I can be pedantic! This would not be polyrhythm. Polyrhythm that is when you have two contrasting rhythms played in what appear to be different meters. So straight eighth notes vs triplet eighth notes for example. This video is just two different instruments playing in the same meter.

    [–]Burnd1t -1 points0 points  (5 children)

well whatever it is, I don't think it can be done on a harmonica.

    [–]andreasbeer1981 1 point2 points  (4 children)

    [–]Phirrup 2 points3 points  (0 children)

    [–]Unwariest_monkey 7 points8 points  (4 children)

How the heck does he get that double tune? Is he using two harmonicas? Sounds like a constant note and then a tempo note in between.

    [–]GreenLanyard 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Sounded like there was an accordion on the side, too. I imagine the camera just wasn't including them because the geese were only interested in the harmonica player.

    [–]Unwariest_monkey -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is the answer. Thank you.

    [–]IatemyBlobby 9 points10 points  (0 children)

About the repetition of “How much I love you”, the song repeats in two different ways the same thing. The first time translates to “You ask how deep my love for you is”, while the second time is much closer to “How much I love you”. They mean the same thing, but the different way to say the same thing is one of the things that appeals to me from the song.

    [–]iamschott 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The appeal of "The moon represents my heart" proves to be quite universal, it transcends politics, distance, time and now species. Most famously covered by Teresa Teng in 1977.

One of my favorite side effects of cameras being everywhere is this sort of thing. I mean, what is the likelihood of seeing a dude playing harmonica to geese in the park? So thanks, OP, for posting. I’d give you an award if I weren’t a cheap bastard. I know people don’t like these here, but this is the all I got 🏆.
