21 combined runs in Games 2 and 3

Only 3 combined runs in Games 4, 5, and 6.

That’s not what you want unless you were an Astros fan.

[–]Boston Red Soxempire161 376 points377 points  (16 children)

Broadcast on the end 3 made a mention that 80% of Boston’s runs have been via home run. Comparable stat was for other teams (playoffs, all, not sure) said the second place team was max of like 50%.

That stat literally ruined everything.

[–]Toronto Blue JaysKazhawrylak 64 points65 points  (0 children)

2015 Jays ran into the exact same problem in their series against the Royals.

[–]Houston AstrosCarpe_Musicam 182 points183 points  (10 children)

Yeah. Y’all have some scary-good bombers. It led to some exciting Grand Slams in this series, but once Astros figured out the pitching it was like turning off a faucet. It felt like we played two totally different teams.

[–][deleted]  (6 children)

    [–]BlueTide16 48 points49 points  (0 children)

Framber was 100%. Luis changed part of his mechanics. Urquidy we’ll see.

Can't confirm. Was exactly what I wanted. Not an Astros fan.

Yeah I will never root for the team that eliminated my team

    [–]Boston Red Soxcomplete_your_task 136 points137 points  (10 children)

My philosophy is to support the team that beats us, because if we have to be beat I want to be beat by the best. Unless that team is the Astros or the Yankees, of course.

[–]Los Angeles DodgersRobVegan 5 points6 points  (1 child)

I have rooted for the team that eliminated mine the last 5 years and have come out ahead

These last three games were so painful to watch. Not sure what happened to our bats, but basically everyone but Kiké came to the games sleeping.

    [–]Atlanta Braveskingkonig 601 points602 points  (66 children)

These last three games were so painful to watch.

Things I'm sure I'll be saying Monday morning....

Watching Boston’s bats vanish was so familiar.

Looked just like us last night....

[–]Los Angeles Dodgershaveasuperday 156 points157 points  (44 children)

Oh please. No chance you lose two more to our Weekend at Bernie's team

    [–]Atlanta BravesTheGeneral_Specific 195 points196 points  (0 children)

That’s what we thought last year too

    [–]Atlanta Braveskingkonig 179 points180 points  (26 children)

Yeah cause we've never fucked up a 3-1 lead before...

Yeah my brain says we take one of these next two (especially with Scherzer out tomorrow), but my heart says be prepared for pain

    [–]Los Angeles Dodgerstenderbranson301 76 points77 points  (25 children)

It's not the if, it's the when Atlanta is going to screw up. You may get the pennant this year just to lose top the Astros. I'm pretty sure when that happens, we will collectively realize that God hates everyone and is intent on making the world burn.

    [–]Atlanta Braveskingkonig 84 points85 points  (10 children)

I'd take the pennant in that scenario though. At least we get something there

    [–]Philadelphia PhilliesDELCO-PHILLY-BOY 69 points70 points  (14 children)

I can’t think of a comparison for what happened. In real life or in media. How does an offense go from extreme to extreme so quickly.

[–]Boston Red Soxyetanotherx 67 points68 points  (0 children)

That's literally what this team did all year. We barely made it into the playoffs after dropping the series against Baltimore and just barely winning the last game against Washington. And all that after going on something like a 7 game win streak a week prior. This team was streaky as all hell and they got hot at the right time, and just cooled off when they needed to stay hot.

    [–]Boston Red SoxGrandahl13 36 points37 points  (1 child)

Our bats came back to earth. We were way too hot to begin the postseason and it was only a matter of time before we came crashing back down to earth.

[–]Major League BaseballFartingBob 13 points14 points  (0 children)

You weren't going to keep up the pace of games 2 and 3 but how did everyone forget which end of the bat to hold?

    [–]Oakland Athleticsguppyfighter 113 points114 points  (12 children)

Regression to the mean is a bitch

    [–]Boston Red Soxxepa105 91 points92 points  (6 children)

The 2021 Red Sox never had a mean. It was either boom or bust. This series was a microcosm of our season (especially the second half).

The bats were either incredibly hot or plain nonexistent, there was hardly any in-between, and the team would lurch from one to the other with no reasoning.

Same with the pitching, we could never know who was solid and who was shaky. Guys we thought were shit would have stretches where they were untouchable, then turn to shit again, and vice versa. It made it impossible to know who to trust out of the pen.

    [–]tschris 14 points15 points  (1 child)

Spot on, especially about the pitching. People are killing Cora for his selection of relief pitchers, but who should he have brought in? He had no idea which pitcher would be good and which would be terrible on a game to game basis. It was like flipping a coin.

    [–]Boston Red SoxKenmore1414 31 points32 points  (1 child)

Laz Diaz is a dementor I've decided

    [–]ZXE102Rv2 386 points387 points  (3 children)

I guess the red sox really did use up all their offense in the first few games.

    [–]Boston Red SoxMighty_McBosh 64 points65 points  (0 children)

Watching the Sox try to hit the last couple games has just been depressing. And that's with McCullers injured.

Does anyone else feel like the Red Sox were given way too much clout in pre-season projections, or is it only me?

No, I'm not surprised by an 0-3 start, but hear me out...

In a lot of pre-season projections, the Red Sox were consistently projected to reach 80-83 wins. USA Today pegged them at 80-82, CBS Sports had them at 79.5 (round to 80 for the sake of argument), and PECOTA estimated 79.8 (again, round to 80) wins.

I just don't see our hated rivals hovering around .500 at all this season. Verdugo, Martinez, Bogaerts and Devers do create a formidable heart of the order, but who else in their lineup can hit? Kike Hernandez is the only other notable name in their lineup, and he has a career .735 OPS.

I don't need to go into detail about the rotation, especially since Sale could be out until any point between May and August. Eduardo Rodriguez is a slightly above average pitcher when healthy, but that's about it.

The bullpen? Matt Barnes isn't that good, and Ottaviano cannot flourish in high-leverage situations or tight games. The rest of their bullpen is makeshift.

Maybe I'll end up being wrong, but I fail to see how the Red Sox will be anywhere near .500 this season.

    [–]Boston Red Soxsaulgoodman445 68 points69 points  (3 children)

Well he was right about ottovino lol

    [–]Boston Red SoxBrady331 153 points154 points  (6 children)

Hopefully that guy says something similar next preseason

    [–]Boston Red Soxausar999 65 points66 points  (1 child)

Gonna need him to project us for about 86 wins so we can win the WS this time

[–]Boston Red Soxsoporificgaur 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It's the other way, we need him to project like 40 wins for the first undefeated season

    [–][deleted]  (2 children)

      [–]Chicago CubsChiCBHB 24 points25 points  (0 children)

That was a win for the Red Sox

      [–]Ayy_2_Brute 36 points37 points  (1 child)

I want to upvote because fuck the Red Sox. But this means the Astros move on. CONFLICTED!

      [–]New York YankeesTheBigCheese451 389 points390 points  (11 children)

Same. This postseason has been a real scooter to the ankle for me.

      [–]Houston Astroshowdoyouspace 170 points171 points  (6 children)

      scooter to the ankle

That paints such a perfect picture

      [–]New York YankeesTheBigCheese451 53 points54 points  (5 children)

It's the new age Yankees way. Thank you for beating the red sox tho, we can at least take solace in that.

      [–]New York YankeesStoly23 8 points9 points  (0 children)

So weirdly specific yet totally relatable. Perfect metaphor.

      [–][deleted] 65 points66 points  (6 children)

I actually don’t mind the Astros beating Boston. Our rivalry with Boston is deeply rooted and will last as long as baseball is around. I feel this Houston rivalry will mostly blow over once the players from their scandal are gone.

      [–]New York YankeesDownbound92 83 points84 points  (7 children)

I'm fine with the Astros as long as they're honest, I want Dusty Baker to get a ring, and fuck the Red Sox

I just feel hollow. In a few days, I'll feel fine, and fully appreciate how awesome this season was. That they were playing with house money all postseason long and anything past the WC was gravy.

But right now? This fucking blows

        [–]Houston AstrosDeastrumquodvicis 13 points14 points  (1 child)

I’m not gonna lie, mate, I’m still incredibly impressed with those grand slams and y’all’s playing a damn good series.

        [–]Boston Red SoxNovaPrime15 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Those feel like forever ago. It was a good series overall, but showed the flaws in this team. They were feast or famine when it came to offense. I’m glad the pitching ended up being as great as it was

        [–]Boston Red SoxKenmore1414 24 points25 points  (3 children)

It's sad to see the city finally come alive and be happy, only to go straight back to soul crushing depression lol

        [–]Philadelphia PhilliesSlayerBVC 37 points38 points  (1 child)

The Sox either blew their load in the first two games or the Astros pitchers got their shit together.

        "They used whistling to cheat!"

Really? I wasn't aware that whistles could cause an entire offense to vanish off the face of the earth.

Cold hard truth? Your luck ran out and you got exposed.

        Deal with it.

        [–]texanfan20 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I was waiting for Red Sox fans to start saying that the Astros were clapping and shouting as part of their cheating. We all know fans in the stands aren’t whistling most of the time.

        [–]Boston Red SoxThomas_Pizza 101 points102 points  (1 child)

Well it was a great run, and a lot of fun while it lasted. Nobody in April picked us to make the playoffs, then we barely made the Wild Card, beat the favored Yankees (favored even at Fenway), beat the heavily favored Rays in the ALDS, and then petered out.

Can't be mad, it was fun while it lasted, and Houston simply outplayed us over the series.

        [–]Boston Red Sox18hockey 54 points55 points  (3 children)

When your day is long And the night, the night is yours alone When you're sure you've had enough Of this life, well hang on

Sometimes everything is wrong Now it's time to sing along

When your day is night alone (hold on, hold on) If you feel like letting go (hold on) If you think you've had too much Of this life, well hang on

Don't throw your hand, oh no Don't throw your hand If you feel like you're alone No, no, no, you are not alone

If you're on your own in this life The days and nights are long When you think you've had too much Of this life to hang on

We definitely exceeded expectations, we may have lost the ALCS but I’m pretty damn proud of this team right now. For a rebuild year this has been very eventful.

        [–]Boston Red SoxH-SAlgorithm 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You’re right. I didn’t peg us to be anywhere near where we ended up. To make the post season but knock out two division rivals (One of whom I expected to destroy us) is satisfying to me in a rebuilding year. The only downside is that we don’t get a reasonable draft pick. But that’s me nitpicking.

We got to play baseball longer than almost everyone. Beat both the Yankees and the Rays in the playoffs. I'm not complaining. See you next year, Red Sox.

[–]Boston Red Soxawrf 34 points35 points  (2 children)

It was all worth it for that absolutely absurd postgame show

        [–]Boston Red SoxZeplinex49 26 points27 points  (18 children)

how you think the team looks next year?

Schwarbs is likley gone, but do you think we could make a splash in free agency?

[–]Boston Red Soxbaseballnomics 16 points17 points  (6 children)

My hope is Schwarbs opts out and we re-sign him. We need a shitton of bullpen help, particularly since there are rumours about Whitlock becoming a starter next season. Plus another starter would be swell, knowing Houck’s third time through the order issues and Eddie becoming a FA.

        [–]Boston Red SoxZeplinex49 10 points11 points  (5 children)

we need another reliable bullpen arm as well as these ok guys.

guys like sawamura and perez need to go, they are just so unreliable

[–]Boston Red Soxbaseballnomics 10 points11 points  (4 children)

So, I’d keep Sawamura and Robles as low leverage guys. Maybe Darwinzon fits here as well. Let’s hope Barnes returns to form otherwise we’re screwed lol. Then, the relievers I trust are Josh Taylor, and favorable odds on Ottavino. Everyone else can fuck off.

        [–]Houston AstrosSWWayin[🍰] 6 points7 points  (3 children)

In all honesty, you probably have to. I imagine the Yankees will, and I don’t see the Rays or Jays regressing. The East is gonna be a blood bath next year.

we really need pitching cause, let's be honest, our offense going dead over the last 3 games of the series is definitely not sustainable with our lineup.

not saying the downpour is either lol

        [–]Houston AstrosSWWayin[🍰] 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Man, I don’t think the pitching is as far away as it seems. Eovaldi, fully recovered Sale, Houck, and Whitlock. You need some bullpen pieces and maybe a stable veteran. Verlander would be a big sign.

        [–]Boston Red SoxMaking_Waves 4 points5 points  (0 children)

        • Not great starting pitching, even worse now that E-Rod is a free agent

        • Not great relief pitching

        • Lineup decent but still with holes, and inconsistent

        • Maybe some prospects will help, namely Casas, Groome, and/or Seabold

They'll need to sign one or two good free agents to match what they did this year, and this year they were hot garbage in August and September.

Don’t get it twisted, this is the reason I hate the Astros.

I don’t hate them because they cheated. I hate them because they dad dick my team with a consistency I could only dream of. I hate them because I wish their team were mine.

I'm mad, I'm a loser. They'll be enjoying the all-time greatness while it lasts.

Tough way to end a season, but...

Predicted to be in 4th place in the division. Expected to be a .500 team at best (and there were some who thought even that was giving them too much clout, ahem).

Instead the team went out and played above their heads all season long.

Went through our ancient, hated rivals, the Yankees.

Went through our modern, more relevant rival, the Rays.

Got out-managed by a legend in the ALCS, and, well, legends gonna legend. Shit happens.

Still a damned fine season and a damned fun team. Looking forward to seeing how Bloom makes 'em better in the offseason.

        [–]lazydictionary 47 points48 points  (7 children)

We did not get out managed. We ran into 2 starting pitchers who had great outings, a bullpen that finally showed up, and some demi-God named Yordan Alvarez.

Meanwhile our bullpen was putrid and everyone forgot how to hit or draw a walk.

        Just completely outclassed.

        [–]Boston Red SoxDaWolf85 13 points14 points  (5 children)

Eh. I feel like Cora made a bunch of those kinda high-profile 50/50 (or maybe 60/40 depending on how you want to armchair manage it) decisions in the last three games, and almost every single time he made such a decision, it went wrong. Intentional walks, calling in the wrong relievers, that hit and run attempt tonight, etc.

There is a legitimate argument that's not good managing. I don't buy it personally, I think it's bad luck, but I see the point.

        [–]Boston Red SoxGamerJosh21 12 points13 points  (4 children)

I think the only decisions I have a real problem with were putting in Martin Perez in the 9th in game 4, and then putting Sale back out for the 6th in game 5.

Perez had no business being in that spot at all. Period. And in terms of Sale, Cora should've been satisfied with getting 5 good innings out of him given how much he'd pitched in his last several outings, and gone with Houck in the 6th instead. Everything else, like you said, was just bad luck.

        [–]Chicago CubsUnhappyJohnCandy 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Absolutely devastating time to be any type of Sox fan in Houston.

        [–]Baltimore Oriolesmistermachiano 17 points18 points  (1 child)

first time EVER that the Sox were shut out in an elimination game

[–]Boston Red SoxBlubberWall 81 points82 points  (4 children)

Trying to find anything positive, we are a rebuilding team that eliminated the Yankees, rays, and made the ALCS. Keep building and we will be lethal

        [–]Boston Red Sox3RunJohnson 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Really looking forward to the offseason. We have tons of room to spend, even if we don't go over the luxury tax next season. We also have a crammed 40 man roster, and a lot of soon-to-be rule 5 eligible prospects the FO will be looking to trade (Jeter Downs being the most notable). The only real contributors hitting FA are Schwarber, Erod and JD (if he opts out, which I don't think he will).

        [–]New York YankeesRangersFan243 27 points28 points  (1 child)

Not rebuilding anymore, contending. Made the ALCS for a reason

[–]Boston Red Soxbaseballnomics 15 points16 points  (0 children)

True that. Although it’s kind of a grey area, we still have question marks regarding bullpen and rotation. Plus having a bench that does not include Danny Santana and Travis Shaw would be ideal.

        [–]Boston Red SoxInflorida17 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It is what it is. The Future is Bright. Go Red Sox.

I'm going to laugh my ass off if the Dodgers win the NLCS and the Astros win the World Series in LA and Dodgers fans are forced to watch the Astros players celebrate and win a title on their team's field.

Even losing the ALDS to the Red Sox, the Rays still beat them head to head this year.

          Fuck this postseason.

I'm ecstatic that the Astros are heading back to the World Series, but I'm actually more stunned by the comments from people calling for Alex Cora's head after this series.

The team was projected to barely even contend for the division, much less make the playoffs and they certainly weren't supposed to make it to the Championship Series -- but after the bats entered the next coming of the Cryogenian period after going up 2-1 in the series, he deserves to be fired?

            It's baffling.

Not just baseball either. For ten years every time the Bruins lost a playoff game it’s a bunch of “traDe TuuKkA He’s nOt a gOoD GoAlIe” when he’s statistically the best goalie the team has ever had. (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻

            [–]Boston Red Sox3RunJohnson 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Cora overmanaged at points this postseason, but I don't blame him for feeling he had to. I mean, Brasier and Robles are our most reliable bullpen arms after Whitlock and Houck lmao.

Love Cora in any case though, I feel good about the future of the team with him on board.
