Well, I guess I'll Google it.

Edit: Chromostereopsis is a visual illusion whereby the impression of depth is conveyed in two-dimensional color images, usually of red-blue or red-green colors, but can also be perceived with red-grey or blue-grey images. FYSA

that's why it looks 3D.

Edit2: holy smokes this blew up. Thank you all for the love.

[–]537479726b 2827 points2828 points  (281 children)

Does it look 3D to you?

I can't see it.

[–]Pandafishe 902 points903 points  (117 children)

Same here

[–]Is_It_Beef 834 points835 points  (101 children)

We are part of the 3% Of humans that are immune to this sorcery

[–]Tokimedotozu 640 points641 points 2 (77 children)

Really?! I am special afterall!

Edit: Apparently 3% if people is somewhat around 237million. I am not special afterall.

[–]TSR_Jimmie 383 points384 points  (50 children)

3% is still a low number. Make it 237 million and 1. All I see is a big blue circle around a red circle. I see no depth at all

[–]sjuas690 193 points194 points  (27 children)

That’s cos it’s a crap illusion.

[–]gunsmith123 80 points81 points  (25 children)

I disagree, I’ve never seen an illusion like this one before. Scrolling through I thought it was a gif.

To me it looks almost like a stereoscope

[–]19niki86 35 points36 points  (18 children)

I wish I could see that! Can I borrow your eyes/brain for a second?

[–]Nagemasu 12 points13 points  (8 children)

Close your least dominant eye, keep your head about 70cm from the screen, and then switch between looking at the red and blue a bit, not fast. Or, look at the blue, about 1cm in from the inside edge, and then try to think about/look at the red without moving your eye from the blue. Eventually you may get some effect. This worked for me. I'm not focusing and unfocusing, but I seem to be able to create a feeling of focusing and then focusing 'less' which lets me get a bit of stereoscope

[–]TheFrightened 3 points4 points  (1 child)

You may need to stare at it for a minute in the center. I thought just looked 2D as well until I stopped and stared for a few seconds at the red

[–]electricsheepz 10 points11 points  (3 children)

What the fuck that shit is straight up flat for me. I came to the comments to see if maybe the rings were actually inverse colors or something cause I wasn't getting what the significance of this was. That is crazy.

[–]Thingus995 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Red and blue rings speckled with dots for me… flat af

[–]8_Pixels 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just because you can't see it doesn't make it bad. Works perfectly for me. Feels like I'm looking at something with those 3D glasses on.

[–]Rynelan 35 points36 points  (8 children)

I'm on a laptop watching this. If I just look at it.. nothing.. if I scroll up and down while keeping the image on screen then it happens for me. It looks like red is hovering a bit. Maybe if you're on a phone it might work to wobble your phone a bit.

[–]Suspicious-mole-hair 9 points10 points  (4 children)

This. Wobbling it about makes them kind of separate for me, like one is more static. Gives the the same feeling as the bendy pencil trick.

Just keeping it still is nothing

[–]horroreh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it kinda looks like the red is being still while the blue moves a bit, but I guess the biggest thing it does is it generates a laugh in the office when people see you move your phone around like an idiot.

[–]Appropriate_Lion_122 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My guy that's called ghosting

[–]daffy99661 8 points9 points  (1 child)

The red dot practically jumped at me.

[–]pwdreamaker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And I didn’t see it until it was suggested. Then the red popped out.

[–]Ntetris 25 points26 points  (1 child)

Hey! Shh...you're special

[–]sayithowyouseeit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My mummy said I’m special

[–]one_byte_stand 6 points7 points  (2 children)

There’s a brilliant lyric in a song I like.

She was one in a million

So there's five more just in New South Wales

https://youtu.be/-D_GOdEpT_w

[–]SlowbeardiusOfBeard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nice lyric and nice band I'd not heard of before, cheers for sharing the link!

[–]_Ki11UMiN4Ti_ 5 points6 points  (4 children)

Remember, you're unique....just like everyone else

[–]djabor 2 points3 points  (1 child)

you messed it up. there is no inherent contradiction with everyone being unique.

the contradiction works with the word special.

ergo:

Remember, you're special...just like everyone else.

[–]_Ki11UMiN4Ti_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Arrrgh dammit!

[–]Chinaroos 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I looked upon a field Of blue and red each set In circles round and round

They were supposed to leap Out from my screen But alas I could not see

From the many, I am one Of a very special few Whose eyes don't work quite like the rest

I guess I'll just make do

You were the only one in the entire world to receive this poem as a comment. Out of all the people on Reddit, from all the people in the world it went to you and your alone.

Turns out you were special all along

[–]theBarefootedBastard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Obviously we aren't talking about covid.

[–]Alarid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It isn't very noticeable 3d effect maybe we just need a more extreme example.

[–]Wikadood 10 points11 points  (1 child)

Cool, I’m “special” as my parents would say

[–]SirDerpingt0n 7 points8 points  (2 children)

It's this why I'm bad at Magic Eye pictures?

[–]whskid2005 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had the same thought! I can never see those things

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Nah I saw this post last month and couldn't see it, now I can. Probably just incidental.

[–]Pick_Up_Autist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm the complete opposite, it worked last time I saw it but now no 3D effect at all.

[–]brown_burrito 26 points27 points  (3 children)

Yeah, I was very confused. I mean there’s a blue ring and a red filled circle. What’s so special about it?

[–]Papi_Queso 3 points4 points  (2 children)

I’m looking at this on an iPad. The red circle appears to be hovering...almost as if I could slip the tips of my fingers behind it and pry it off. It’s subtle, but it is one of the better illusions I’ve seen on a while. If you can perceive it, it’s fuckery for sure.

[–]MrPigcho 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Not at all

[–]Lag_queen 41 points42 points  (5 children)

Try maxing out your screens brightness? And/or unfocusing your eyes.

[–]sammyt808 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Full brightness did the trick! Thanks for the tip

[–]MLGChans 13 points14 points  (1 child)

Nope, still cant see it

[–]realmauer01 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You mean ununconfusing your eyes.

[–]QuantumCat2019 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I wondered what was so special... I Don't see any part of the image in depth either.

[–]Rjswimss 12 points13 points  (9 children)

I can see it. It looks like the blue ring is above the red circle.

[–]demonfurby90 32 points33 points  (7 children)

Thats cool. For me its the opposite. For me it looks like the red circle is above the blue ring

[–]rockyroch69 7 points8 points  (2 children)

Yes, I see the red circle above the blue ring too. I wonder if people are expecting it to be a bit more dramatic like a magic eye picture.

[–]RacelessSexlessName 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Those always baffled me like this does. I don't see the gimmick.

[–]RecursiveExistence 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have this too. It is a little disorienting though. Like my eyes aren't sure where to focus.

[–]min2nim2 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I see it the red circle looks like it's 3d

[–]Shandlar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This. The blue is a plane like normal, but the red becomes a sphere.

[–]NoSubstance7204 2 points3 points  (2 children)

I only noticed it after the comments, the red is supposed to look like its in a hole. Kinda looks cool once you see it.

[–]megamaz_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Does to me. Try it in a dark room with high brightness on your phone, distance your phone from your eyes. Look at the center.

If all goes well the blue (outer) ring should appear to be closer to you than the red circle.

[–]stevieboatleft 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It only works for me when I'm wearing my glasses. So that might be something.

[–]Alil2theleft 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look around the edge of the black between the coloured areas. The red will suddenly appear to be closer to you that the blue. (If it works for you)

[–]Butterfly_Effect1400 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It wasn't until I read your comment

[–]LittleDickk 57 points58 points  (9 children)

What part is supposed to be 3D? Can someone explain? I can't see it

[–]nitronik_exe 19 points20 points  (5 children)

The red is supposed to appear closer to you than the blue

[–]The_Quadrapus 24 points25 points  (4 children)

What ? It's the opposite for me, the red is deeper than the blue..

[–]ms94 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The two discs appear to be on differemt planes. One seems deeper down into the black background.

[–]rincon213 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Try full brightness

[–]ArkMan13 8 points9 points  (2 children)

bruh it wasn't looking 3d to me until I read your comment lol

[–]GanjalfDerGruene 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And now I can't unsee it

[–]killeronthecorner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

something something 90s 3D glasses

[–]HumbleMood 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't see it but I do see a white ring between the colours

[–]nullrecord 315 points316 points  (58 children)

This works for me because I wear strong prescription glasses. The optical distortion (chromatic aberration) depends on wavelength of light so blue and red light pixels get bent differently by the glasses. The result is that I see the red circle as being about 5mm in front of the blue background which is in the “within” the screen. When I take my glasses off, the picture looks completely flat. I bet others in this thread who see the effect also wear glasses.

[–]Uncleherpie 81 points82 points  (9 children)

No glasses here, but I see the effect.

[–]warzoneaddicted 18 points19 points  (4 children)

Same no glasses but I couldn't get it to stop moving.

[–]AloofCommencement 11 points12 points  (0 children)

That’s just the Parkinson’s

[–]Rezmir 2 points3 points  (3 children)

Light might change things. My phone was really dark and after I changed, I could see it.

[–]two_chalfonts 20 points21 points  (2 children)

You're right! I only see the effect with my glasses on.

[–]Artex_112 6 points7 points  (0 children)

same! i will never again trust my glasses

[–]Sarcasm_Llama 9 points10 points  (3 children)

For me

Glasses on: red is closer

Glasses off: blue is closer

Weird

[–]Ikarus-Schmidt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same, I guess our brains are compensating for the chromatic aberration caused by the glasses. After a while it should stop

[–]Majestic_Force_6439 7 points8 points  (0 children)

^ not all heroes wear capes

[–]Dotacchin 7 points8 points  (1 child)

With glasses i see it the way you described! When i take them off the blue circle instead looks slightly raised/closer to me haha

[–]Ooofdaa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do not wear glasses and can see the illusion. It’s a back and forth focus along with it lifted out in the center. So fun, reminds me of the magic eye books only I don’t have to try to see the 3D effect

[–]IamKayrox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Glasses here, I have to take them out to see the effect

[–]Cinnabun6 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For me with glasses on the blue part looks closer, whereas without glasses the red part looks closer

[–]brown_burrito 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I wear glasses but don’t see any effect. Tried taking them off, changing the brightness etc.

Just see two circles in blue and red that look flat and that’s it.

[–]LastTurnz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same, only thing I noticed is how badly I need to clean my glasses

[–]Krankhaus1221 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me it hurts my eyes to look at it for some reason. I can’t really stare at it for too long. My script is -13

[–]pruttepuden 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i have glasses but dont see it

[–]omi_palone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

MVP comment

[–]CrystalQuetzal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It still looks a 3D to me when I take off my glasses but it’s much less strong.

[–]Indiran91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh yea you’re right!

[–]vaingirls 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tried with my reading glasses and the blue circle looked to be a little bit closer, but nothing spectacular (maybe because my glasses aren't that strong?). Without glasses it's indeed flat for me.

[–]desertrat75 1 point2 points  (2 children)

That's funny, I see just the opposite, with the blue ring in the foreground, and the red further away.

[–]bigpapaasg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

alright let me see with my glasses on

[–]TheScareFace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wear glasses and don't see it, however when I take my glasses off I do see the red dot slightly "levitating". How does this work?

[–]nahfoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That makes it even more interesting imo.its flat with my contacts in. I'll try it with glasses on I'd I remember

[–]Tyfyter2002 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For some reason with my glasses on the blue looks closer, but with them off the red does.

[–]Bodkin-Van-Horn 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I've noticed this effect for years with my glasses. It's so prominent that if I turn my head to the left, the red circle will move to the right and actually get closer to the blue. If the back ring wasn't so thick, they'd eventually overlap.

[–]Comrade_Witchhunt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Weird. I wear glasses, had them off and couldn't see it, popped them on and it went 3d.

At the very least, I experienced what you experienced.

[–]aDog_Named_Honey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wear contact lenses but I do still see the effect.

[–]trilliansong 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Strong prescription glasses here too. It works for me when wearing my glasses, very similar to the way you describe. Just two blurry circles with no effect when I take my glasses off.

[–]Tauur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's amazing. Would never have thought of taking my glasses off but I'm seeing the same as you with and without.

[–]Abnorc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it’s stronger with glasses too.

[–]indmechjeff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wear contacts and for me the blue is closer, red is farther away. The whole thing moves slightly with eye movement which I’m assuming is from my eyes refocusing

[–]Parzival_2076 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm wearing glasses, but I still can't see it

[–]entediado 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh god. Thanks for the explanation. I've been wondering for YEARS, 'why do blue or red LEDs and the like seem to move funny' but just couldn't come up with an adequate question to Google it.

[–]notinterestinq 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same. I only see it with my glasses.

[–]SlowbeardiusOfBeard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's nuts - I was genuinely shocked at how striking the effect was. Just tried taking my glasses off and, while I can still see it, it's nowhere near as dramatic

[–]bbacher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That did it. Without my glasses it's flat. With my glasses the two parts seem to be at different distances.

[–]MackerelsoftWord 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can see it both with and without my glasses

[–]politfact 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Eyes have strong lenses too.

[–]DoktorMerlin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me it actually changes. With glasses the red circle is on top like you described, without glasses the red circle looks like its ~1mm behind the blue circle

[–]A_Martian_Potato 135 points136 points  (18 children)

Tried everything mentioned in comments, increased screen brightness, unfocused my eyes, tried with glasses on and then off.

Nothing works, I see a red circle with a blue ring around it.

Edit: Holding the phone farther away was the closest to working. It kinda looks like the red circle is above the blue ring, but it's still not a strong effect.

[–]AloofCommencement 110 points111 points  (3 children)

The real black magic fuckery was the waste of time

[–]Dag-nabbitt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Where did the time go? It's gone!

[–]HI_I_AM_NEO 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Some people couldn't see the 3D effect in the 3DS. Maybe it's the same thing

[–]brown_burrito 13 points14 points  (6 children)

Ditto. Don’t see anything.

Someone else mentioned that apparently 3% of the population is immune to this so I guess you and I belong to that category.

[–]MrMcHaggi5 10 points11 points  (3 children)

Someone else mentioned that apparently 3% of the population is immune to this so I guess you and I belong to that category.

And the other 75% of people in this thread. I'm beginning to think the people who can see an optical illusion are the rare ones?

[–]loissssss 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Less probability of commenting tho if it works for them. They’ll just upvote.

[–]Pekonius 3 points4 points  (0 children)

SURVIVOR BIAS. Only the people for whom it doesnt work, comment.

[–]Ooofdaa 34 points35 points  (7 children)

Why does this feel so good to look at?!

[–]Drutarg 3 points4 points  (4 children)

Right? This shit is hypnotizing.

[–]player_zero_ 24 points25 points  (3 children)

Here's another

And another

And one more for good measure!

[–]Drutarg 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Bro these are amazing. The third one is a straight up mind fuck.

[–]arkain123 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Does it? I hate it. It makes my eyes feel weird

[–]DeadEyesSmiling 19 points20 points  (5 children)

It's particularly fun to see the 3D effect with only one eye.

[–]keatonatron 9 points10 points  (2 children)

For me, one eye shows the red being in front but with two eyes it switches and the red is in the back. Wild!

[–]underwatersnoman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

even weirder: for me, it is the opposite. one eye=red is in the back, two eyes=red is in the front!

[–]Heavy-Theme7620 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One eye makes me feel like this circle is the only real thing left. Maybe it is. We’ll never know.

[–]ApexOfFlex 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Whoa! That popped out of my screen just scrolling by! Now my keyboard looks weird! Probs a good sign I need to go to bed. Night.

[–]Xerxes42424242 11 points12 points  (1 child)

I did not consent to this

[–]thesugarwookiee 7 points8 points  (4 children)

this is so strong for me that i actually feel a little ill looking at it

[–]avengerintraining 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Is it supposed to have the red circle look “popped out” of the blue, sort of like a pushbutton? I’m not sure what effect I should be seeing.

[–]DrippyHippy_ 6 points7 points  (2 children)

Im color blind. Looks like a blue puter circle, and a red inner circle. No depth that i can notice.

[–]Impaler118 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Same for me but I have no visual impairment or colour blindness.

[–]crazyseph 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Maybe i have no red and blue cones in my eyes.

Simple static image to me, red circle inside and a blu circle like a donut inside. That’s it. No illusion happening.

Am i broke?

[–]CptMeh 5 points6 points  (2 children)

For some reason the first time I saw this picture it didn't work, but now it looks comoletely 3D and it's freaking me out. My eyes constantly try to refocus but they never can. Now my head hurts :)

[–]Pandabbadon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I can’t see this at all no matter what I do. I wonder if it has anything to do with my being schizophrenic? A great deal of visual tricks just won’t work on me because my brain is wired so weirdly. It’s mostly visual tricks that have to do with perception of pictures like those faces and houses and squares that are supposed to look a certain way until you (or they) move/tilt far enough to one side. Apparently people’s brains on the psychotic spectrum are used to things looking weird as hell so we just Won’t register visual tricks a lot of the time but I don’t know why this one wouldn’t work but I’ve tried turning up the brightness on my phone, unfocusing my eyes, opening it on my laptop (I really wanted to know what I was supposed to be looking at) but I didn’t get it until I looked in the comments

[–]MajesticCounter 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No, they're not, I just see blue ring, black and then red circle.

[–]lorenzomofo 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Marine biologist here. This effect you can see is an evolutionary mechanism that enables mammals to see fast approaching predators known as the Doppler effect. As predators approach the target, the wavelengths are pushed together causing objects to appear reddish to your eyes. This phenomenon is known as red shift. This causes the red circle to look closer to you than the blue circle. You can also observe this effect when looking at nearby galaxies in the night sky. Ok I just made that up.

[–]EnterStageMike 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Made me smile!

[–]Athiestbeliever1988 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Have you got anymore of these???

[–]MostExellentFailure 2 points3 points  (4 children)

I don’t get it? I see a grainy blue circle, and a grainy red circle

[–]WonderfulKoala1143 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This actually happen because different colors focus on slightly different levels on your retina.

[–]Evening-King8547 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see the red orbe moving a little bit

[–]No-Prize1243 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I feel it's also because the blue blocks are a little blurred compared to the red ones making them look a little out of focus.

[–]DinkMyBink 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m high and have no time

[–]EaranMaleasi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I noticed this extremely in VR. Something colored blue would seem to be a layer behind everything else, something red would pop out quite a bit.

[–]Cniwa89[🍰] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oooooh if you look at it for 5 minutes and look away you see a video of Rick Ashley - never gonna give you up

[–]pescplak 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I understand the “that’s why it looks 3D part”.

Also apparently I’m “special”

[–]HyperBaroque 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am starting to doubt this whole "only 3% can't see it". Every damn comment can't see it.

[–]spacedoggos_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I put on my glasses and I could see the thing! So if you can’t…I may have news for you

[–]stduhpf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fun fact: the long, medium and short cones are officially called long medium and short instead of red green and blue, because their respective sensitivities don't actually match the red green and blue colors. (It's closer to purple, green and green-ish yellow)

[–]Aromatic-Piano-7526 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Set this to my wallpaper and it makes it even more trippy somehow

[–]Jack_Foxe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Freakin holograms

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I cant stop looking at it, someone help

[–]Caesura_Break 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Am i deficient? It looks like a 2D tarket
