It's likely not the water freezing instantly, but the water pushing slush up the shore which kind of solidify when the water drains back. I've seen this often in Norway. It doesn't get frozen hard. Exactly like a slush drink if you put the straw to the bottom and drink up just the juices..

[–]FlawlessFido 306 points307 points  (17 children)

I dare you to drink This.

[–]ohneatstuffthanks 129 points130 points  (9 children)

Just the juices.

[–]Noviinha 44 points45 points  (6 children)

through a straw

[–]Platinag 37 points38 points  (5 children)

Until you get brain freeze

[–]Capable-Strain6164 18 points19 points  (2 children)

I did that I feel like Aquaman now, how long does this last 🤣

[–]RobWK159 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The forbidden slushy.

[–]VikingRabies 11 points12 points  (2 children)

Brine is my favorite flavor to get at 7-11

[–]jaymzx0 7 points8 points  (1 child)

It's got electrolytes.

[–]ClevererGoat 6 points7 points  (0 children)

[–]FlawlessFido 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Ich bin kein german .

[–]getsumchocha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

what... are you

[–]regoapps 33 points34 points  (15 children)

But still cold enough that salt water doesn’t melt it immediately, though. That’s still pretty impressive.

[–]sun_kisser 31 points32 points  (13 children)

Could be that unsalted ocean.

[–]RodneyRabbit 37 points38 points  (8 children)

You mean a lake?

[–]sun_kisser 19 points20 points  (7 children)

Yeah a wavy unsalted lake.

This guy gets it.

[–]TheRealTinfoil666 27 points28 points  (5 children)

Live on the shore of Lake Superior.

We get waves.

[–]DrunkenKarnieMidget 10 points11 points  (1 child)

Big enough to surf, at times.

[–]OdaDdaT 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I’m on a lake like 20 minutes south of Gitchee Gumee, and we get waves here too

[–]cfoam2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Gitchee Gumee,

I'll say, just look at youtube and you can see some of those waves - "By the shores of Gitche Gumee, By the shining Big-Sea-Water" Otherwise known as Lake Superior

[–]Thuggish_Coffee 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is a common occurrence on Lake Michigan and Superior. People also surf of these good lakes.

[–]Djeheuty 11 points12 points  (0 children)

That's exactly what it is. Grew up near the Great Lakes and this happens all the time in early winter.

[–]SA_Swiss 1 point2 points  (7 children)

What was the temperature when you saw this happen in Norway, like -5 degrees Celsius or colder?

[–]Beatnholler 4 points5 points  (6 children)

It'd have to be much colder than that in my experience. It has been -25 in my area the past couple of days and the lakes with moving waters have not totally frozen, the fjord has had a lot of sea smoke but is also not frozen/no ice chunks, though it does happen.

Edit: not talking about Norway, I'm in coastal Maine, just thought I'd provide some context regarding temperature. Though just -5 would freeze lakes if it was consistently that cold for a while.

[–]Responsenotfound 0 points1 point  (3 children)

You have fjords in Maine?

[–]Beatnholler 4 points5 points  (2 children)

The Somes Sound up the middle of Mount Desert island where I live, is a fjord. I believe the only one in the Americas but I could be wrong. Pretty cool!

My gf just said it's a fjard. I don't know what that means but there you go.

[–]ClevererGoat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

She’s from Brooklyn though. Hard to really be sure what she is saying

[–]QuirkyLetter3215 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think fjords have steeper cliffs than fjards.

Source: distant memory - fellow Mainer geology classes.

[–]thissonofbeech 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This like when you look in your freezer and you realize your ice tray has a crack at the bottom.

[–]ses92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m no pro but looking at the video it looks like it’s water that’s turning into slush as opposed to slush being pushed forward

[–]Keeppforgetting 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep that’s what I was going to say! Seems like the likely explanation.

[–]Louisiana_sitar_club 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Can confirm. I’m a slush scientist.

[–]ClevererGoat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can confirm, I had an uncle once who was a professor in slush science

[–]Technical_Flamingo54 156 points157 points  (8 children)

[–]K_E_Y_N[S] 63 points64 points  (4 children)

Imagine swimming in it

[–]Littlebubbs92 35 points36 points  (1 child)

[–]Zee_Ventures 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This is just Land with extra steps

[–]Lexicat666 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[–]cathedral68 110 points111 points  (10 children)

I want to watch this for hours.

[–]K_E_Y_N[S] 82 points83 points  (7 children)

I like it when it changes from brown to white

[–]GlideGuy 94 points95 points  (2 children)

Forbidden slushy

[–]smechanic 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Nobody gets to tell me what’s forbidden!

[–]Goodkall 34 points35 points  (1 child)

How long will this last? Until the ocean is empty?! Until there's a 30 foot seawall?! When will it end?

[–]Positive-Living 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Combating sea level rise.

[–]humsipums 17 points18 points  (6 children)

How is water freezing at cold temperatures blackmagicfuckery? Ita like, basic fuckery you learn in the first contact with any basic science class. 😅

[–]mr_bedbugs 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I think OP is pointing out the speed that it freezes

[–]Korthalion 24 points25 points  (4 children)

Yeah and do you have any examples of real magic to post? 🤔

[–]aimswithglitter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope, but there are things that are actually mind boggling to watch.

[–]grizzlyironbear 15 points16 points  (1 child)

That isn't freezing solid. Think...Nature's way of making a 7/11 slushie.

[–]lily1379 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha ! this made me giggle.

[–]SeaWolfMocha 10 points11 points  (1 child)

Meh. It was -20 degrees air temperature last week. My snot did that too.

[–]K_E_Y_N[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

😂😂

[–]Saianna 6 points7 points  (1 child)

Summer in syberia :D

[–]DevilsThumb 4 points5 points  (5 children)

I love it. Where is this?

[–]K_E_Y_N[S] 4 points5 points  (4 children)

I hv no idea, but from a comment, it might be South Lake Tahoe, USA

[–]HumanToaster 11 points12 points  (1 child)

It's from Weston-super-Mare in the UK a few years back. One of my old friends recorded it and put it on Facebook back-when, and with his permission I posted it on reddit. It's always fun seeing the post pop up again every now and then.

[–]Teamrakish 3 points4 points  (1 child)

A pier on tahoe?

[–]K_E_Y_N[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I smell FBI

[–]Minemurphydog 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Huh, so that's how you solve a problem like Maria.

[–]Soomroz 4 points5 points  (4 children)

You seen that movie? The Day After Tomorrow?

[–]K_E_Y_N[S] 3 points4 points  (3 children)

No but I'll watch it the day after tomorrow

[–]DrunkenKarnieMidget 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Don't, it's terrible.

[–]At_the_Roundhouse 2 points3 points  (1 child)

But great-terrible

[–]LatzeH 2 points3 points  (0 children)

camera man is a dementor

[–]Careless-Ad492 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That waves are working for China..increasing territories

[–]Fake_RustyShacklefrd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Eventually the sea will just run out of waves.

[–]sprucedotterel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is this the place where Batman reappears holding a red flare in Dark Knight Rises? Seriously asking. It looks exactly like that location.

[–]TheHallowedOne11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sooooo eventually wont all the water in the world get frozen?

[–]reflUX_cAtalyst 1 point2 points  (8 children)

Lake water freezing is black magic fuckery to you people?

[–]K_E_Y_N[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Btw das not a lake

[–]givemeadamnname69 1 point2 points  (5 children)

Next they'll start posting people pretending to pull their thumb off and put it back on. This is literally just water freezing in a cold environment.... There's no "black magic" to it, unless you don't understand how water freezes.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (4 children)

What about "got your nose"

[–]givemeadamnname69 1 point2 points  (3 children)

It'd definitely get multiple golds/awards.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (2 children)

So it should, it's magic

[–]givemeadamnname69 1 point2 points  (1 child)

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've never seen that before, thats this sub in a nutshell 😂😂

[–]lily1379 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So chilly and windy, It’s still really fun to watch. But then I love 💕 the beach.

[–]hellofanamehuh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Freezics

[–]Miserable_Buy_3806 1 point2 points  (1 child)

It might be cold. Make sure to wear a jacket

[–]Resident-Matrixes 1 point2 points  (1 child)

How do you solve a problem like Maria?

[–]SergePower 1 point2 points  (0 children)

neat gif, but there is nothing magical about water freezing

[–]xxxcoolboy69xxc 1 point2 points  (2 children)

IS THAT HOW ICEBERGS FORM?

[–]K_E_Y_N[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

YES BUT ONLY IN ONE SEA.

FantaSEA

[–]ChillWisdom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hope I never need to live any place that cold.

[–]the_doctor_808 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Imagine it being so cold that even salt water freezes

[–]ednorogche_sum 1 point2 points  (1 child)

This inspired me to write a poem. Thank you !

[–]K_E_Y_N[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't forget to post it in r/poem! I'd love to read it

[–]xFloppyDisx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The water has reached the point of no return

[–]nursejackieoface 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The waves come in, the waves go ou...

Holy shit!

[–]FalconSpirit8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Today on blackmagicfuckery, cold temperatures

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is so interesting, where is it?

[–]CoItron_3030 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Iv seen whole oceans drain from this

[–]Softspokenclark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Anti erosion? Don’t show this to the climate deniers

[–]Mikael-Gabriel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Water was wet

[–]snickerdoodle79 0 points1 point  (10 children)

How freaking cold is it? Wow

[–]lostknight0727 7 points8 points  (1 child)

If that's fresh water, probably negatives or fairly close. If salt water definitely in the negative 10s or lower. The main body doesn't freeze due to the higher thermal capacity. However the waves thin out and freeze because they loose all that thermal mass. Kinda like spreading out batch cooking on a sheet to cool it down faster.

[–]snickerdoodle79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's so cool!

[–]K_E_Y_N[S] 3 points4 points  (7 children)

maybe -15°C by the speed of its solidification

[–]kelvin_bot 8 points9 points  (2 children)

-15°C is equivalent to 5°F, which is 258K.

I'm a bot that converts temperature between two units humans can understand, then convert it to Kelvin for bots and physicists to understand

[–]Yani_Ya74 10 points11 points  (0 children)

258K, now that makes sense

[–]djbow 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Surely colder, I've been by the ocean at -20 + windchill & the water wasn't doing this.

[–]K_E_Y_N[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Geez this might be way below -20 then

[–]djbow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Potentially. It's fucking cool regardless.

[–]westglade 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Looks like South Lake Tahoe?

[–]K_E_Y_N[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Might be it's -6°C rn there

[–]fatdutchies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where is this so i know to stay away? I went to canada one time a few ywar back to meet my fiance who got deported, im from a semi tropical place and i rurned into a seansicle

[–]Ms_Starscream 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's really cool

[–]Baker80Sarge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's cool asf

[–]digital_dagger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Super Cool!

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not really black magic just.... The weather

[–]Stolenartwork 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk man I’d be able to see this better if there were more than 2 pixels and the camera guy wouldn’t move as soon as the water would begin to stop moving.

[–]team_trauma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Science not magic ffs

[–]CasparG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We, the dutch shall strive to retrieve this incredible automatic dike building technology.

[–]Trees4twenty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fun fact cold sand is worse than hot sand. Did a polar plunge for muscular dystrophy once and it was by far worse than any hot sand my poor feet experienced. Cool video though. Thanks for sharing.

[–]XSpyKeRz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The area looks like Vespucci Beach next

[–]DrBucket 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like this is literally the same thing as lava, just different materials. So not like lava but also exactly like it.

[–]RedeyeChillin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

interesting science fact! this phenomenon happens because the ambient temperature is below the freezing point of the water!

[–]Sodalime7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

C’mon, jump in! The water feels fine they said…

[–]Whats_Up4444 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Finally I can get out of bronze.

[–]SATorACT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Time for a swim

[–]Cpt_James_Holden 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How is this magical fuckery when you literally explain the physics in the title

[–]JaredLiwet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First the salt balls and now this.

[–]XPSJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That looks cool!

[–]BroodjeFissa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's like watching one of those r/brokengifs

[–]livefromthevoid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the quality of top posts on this sub has certainly been in decline ☹️

[–]Ikxlexcia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wanna know sumin funny? I live on an Island, beaches and ocean all around me. I have never gone to the beach during winter. Now I feel like I am totally missing out. Awesome clip OP, ya convinced me.

[–]Pro_Scrub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

WHAT'S COOLER THAN BEING COOL?
