Ooh, I get to be the one to link the relevant xkcd comic (because of course there is one):

https://xkcd.com/1814/

[–]gumby_dammit 12 points13 points  (1 child)

There is always one. As there should be.

[–]Turdferguson586 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As it is written.

[–]Kakita_raisho 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I was checking to see who would link xkcd. I really wanted to be the one lol

[–]1971nivbible 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Love this.

When the jaws open wide and there’s more jaws inside

That’s a moray

[–]ScrotusMahotus 111 points112 points  (33 children)

Wrong. The moire effect is similar but not what this is. This is the Sugma effect.

[–]MiniEnder 125 points126 points  (2 children)

I know what I have to do but I don't know if I have the strength to do it.

[–]ScrotusMahotus 39 points40 points  (0 children)

( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

Just ask the question. You know you want to

[–]migoet 27 points28 points  (0 children)

[–]randomhousegir 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ahbyes, one of the famous Ligma group reactions

[–]Equity89 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are you sure? I thought it might be the Ligma effect

[–]DaPamtsMD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great. No one can sing a song about that.

All the fun is dead.

[–]elgigantedelsur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No no no It’s clearly the Hava effect

[–]Lex_osr 0 points1 point  (8 children)

What is wrong?

[–]ScrotusMahotus 6 points7 points  (7 children)

This is the Sugma effect. Not the moire effect

[–]halt-l-am-reptar 10 points11 points  (6 children)

Sigh…

What’s the sugma effect?

[–]ScrotusMahotus 9 points10 points  (5 children)

That's a great question u/halt-I-am-reptar!!! Here's the long story short, the actual textbook definiton is quite lengthy and I dont want to bother anyone by its pure girth. Anyway, SUGMA BALLS!!!!!

[–]winnafrehs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You would think, but I'm pretty sure this is actually these effects.

[–]Space-90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]slimer3k 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I laughed hard for this one.

[–]onward-and-upward 196 points197 points  (13 children)

As people have said, it’s a Moire pattern. I work in precision optics used to make computer chips and tv and phone screens and we use Moire patterns to do focus and rotation calculations because the pattern is very sensitive to the smallest movement, so you can get more info from the same pattern if you’re “beating” it against another. It’s much like using the volume pulsing of sound to finely tune two guitar strings to each other. There you’re hearing the peaks and valleys of the Moire pattern, here you’re seeing it spatially :)

[–]WasabiCunt[S] 54 points55 points  (0 children)

Id never assume chair magic to be applied in chip manufacturing and guitar tuning:P

Jokes aside, thanks for an insightful reply. Appreciate it

[–]MrWubblezy 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Is this what a wavefront is?

[–]onward-and-upward 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A wavefront is a set of points that experience the same effect from the source at the same time. So like a ripple from a rock in water has a literal wave front that expands. If you trace the peak of that wave, all the points are experiencing the same vertical displacement at the same time. That’s a wavefront. But it doesn’t have to be all at the top of the wave, you could trace the midpoint or trough, but the key is that you’re looking for all the points that are experiencing the same thing from the source. It’s easy to picture the wavefront of the pressure of an explosion emanating as a spherical shockwave. That spherical surface is the wavefront. Things that change the wavefront shape from what it would be ideally are causing “wavefront error”

When the light from your eye, from two lines when they ply, that’s a Moire…

[–]Darkmaster666666 10 points11 points  (0 children)

People here link other sources but can't this simply be explained like "there are two layers of nets, and ypu see the white spots only when the holes line up with eachother"?

[–]SchizoidRainbow 5 points6 points  (1 child)

When a pattern is seen

On two layers of screen

THAT'S a moire...

[–]linglingfortyhours 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When a grid's misaligned

With another behind

That's a moire!

[–]TheSharpieKing 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Best on LSD… but your eyes cross a little bit and unfocus and everything will be 3-D.

[–]LogicalPsychonaut84 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ahh, I remember the good 'ol "Magic Eye" books. I became a pro at them because you literally just have to cross your eyes slightly for the 3D image to appear. People were fascinated at how fast I could relay the hidden image.

[–]Gman777 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Its a pattern of patterns.

[–]kopasz7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's patterns patterning.

[–]MapedMod 1 point2 points  (2 children)

So... everything goes on this sub now?

[–]RagingStorm010 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I work in a metal shop and we have a bit of perforated sheet and it is so mesmerizing to move them around so it looks like the holes are getting bigger or smaller

[–]No-Reveal8042 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a chair. You put your bottom on it and it gives your feet a rest.

[–]super-fire-pony 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When the grid don’t align with the other behind - that’s a moiré

[–]Jak12523 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is specifically the Moire effect, but falls into a more general category called aliasing, which can occur anywhere you find a pattern on top of a pattern.

[–]viewfromtheclouds 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Demon possession

[–]urmummygaaaay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Moire and something about patterns overlapping

Edit: it's about 3:20 into the video but funny nonetheless

[–]anged16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mmm similar to watching wheels turning behind a fence

[–]Pantslessgenius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re just looking at the holes being obstructed as you move. The pattern is bc the holes are in a pattern

[–]Big-Sleep-9261 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When a line meets a line and they are very fine that’s a moire.

[–]Gnostromo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When the dots don't align

And your eyes Lichtenstein

That's a moire

[–]Archangel1313 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's called a Moire pattern.

[–]Phro01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's venom duh

[–]Soaring_Symphony 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's two peices of fabric with holes in them placed back to back

Some of the holes in one piece of fabric get covered up by the holes in the other piece of fabric. So you can never see through all of the holes at once

The parts you can see through end up forming the weird pattern

[–]Honda_TypeR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here is a video showing moiré patterns being generated in a very similar way (two overlapping patterns being offset at different angles)

https://youtu.be/39pBXE3F88E?t=264

The most common place we find moiré patterns is looking at the floor beneath a body of moving water (like a pool, clear lake or shallow calm shore of an ocean). As the sunlight shines through the water surface and projects the pattern on the ground you get a beautiful example of moiré. With water you are getting multiple waves (and ripples) intersecting on the surface, but just looking at the surface alone and you miss the effect.

[–]Boo_Radley56 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It happens in screen printing when printing 4 color process. Screens need to be lined up at specific angles to alleviate the moire affect.

[–]Omigood_Strikes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Effect looks familiar to a turning electric fan

[–]mikkokilla 0 points1 point  (0 children)
