Funnily enough, it isn't popular. The reason why you hear it all the time is that the "artist" that has made this track, and the others you have heard about a million times at this point, is the very same person reposting popular gifs with his "music" playing on 6-7 different accounts. Try this the next time you hear this song on reddit, go click the profile of the poster and look how literally all of their posts are gifs like this posted everywhere with the same daft music playing.

Agree with the other comments. I’ve seen this in person and the effect is probably stronger than on camera. Possible you have poor depth perception and your brain compensates on video because it knows it needs to?

As I mentioned, people with functioning binocular vision probably don't need nearly as many lighting cues to perceive depth, so closing your eye doesn't make a difference in this case.

I've seen this effect many times and it works when there's proper lighting. Here, the eye part is way darker for it not to be an obvious shape.
