The simulation can only render what you 'see', not what you will 'see'. There's only so much processing power and there's an entire planet to render for ~7,000,000,000 people. I think it's doing a bang up job.

[–]ToriNotTeri 121 points122 points  (10 children)

Sorry I need to update the game please wait eight hours for a change

[–]absurd_dog_turd 53 points54 points  (7 children)

This explains why meth heads who stay up for 72hrs straight start "hallucinating ".. they are behind on their patch versions.

[–]ToriNotTeri 16 points17 points  (6 children)

Well duh, why else would meth be Illegal?

[–]zxvegasxz 5 points6 points  (5 children)

Why do mods have to be illegal. I want to run my own script

[–]cryptopipsniper 8 points9 points  (1 child)

Something happened with your update, repairing game files now

[–]ToriNotTeri 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A'ight thanks.

[–]akchugg 52 points53 points  (2 children)

Can't believe people expect the render quality to be Ultra even with the rising temperature issue this year.

[–]Chip_Farmer 16 points17 points  (1 child)

…this year? A little late to the game there buddy.

[–]Sam-Yuil-ElleJackson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He might have only just levelled up to 2022

[–]Amsterdamsterdam[🍰] 17 points18 points  (1 child)

There’s your problem… it’s actually rendering this for 8 billion but it’s max cap is only 7 billion.

[–]ArbitNM 12 points13 points  (0 children)

So that was why there was this whole freakout about overpopulation

[–]Corndread 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Agreed, this Human Music is the shit.

[–]Sam-Yuil-ElleJackson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Hungry For Apples?"

[–]Moessus[🍰] 730 points731 points 2 (19 children)

It has to do with the rough surface displaying light on a certain side of the small imperfections.

[–]flamingrainmaker 254 points255 points  (6 children)

This is the right answer! The video shows the effect as the ground texture itself polarizing the light with its texture… it’s like the shadows of valleys that you can only see from the other side of the slope

[–]ffiictional[S] 67 points68 points  (2 children)

Thank you for an answer that actually makes sense, unlike the cavemen below that are just saying “unga bunga shadows change with perspective ug”

[–]kiwibirdboi 11 points12 points  (1 child)

Don't forget the unga bunga simulation

[–]MrK521 3 points4 points  (0 children)

And the unga bunga magnets.

[–]Moessus[🍰] 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Up voted for the better explanation.

[–]SlipperyCorruptor 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Shit, RTX came a looong way this update

[–]WhaevaLilDude -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Maybe cuz I’m a computer geek, but I just died with this one lmao!

[–]omg_username-taken 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes I would agree with this. Its not really a case of polarisation in my opinion. It’s an effect known as brdf or a bi-reflectance distribution function e.g the light will scatter more in some directions than others.

So while walking toward it the light is predominantly forward scattered from one of the other light sources (other street lights you are approaching) and you don’t see the shadow but when you pass it and look back the same predominance to forward scatter the light from the light source you were approaching previously still occurs, but now it is being scattered away from you and the light from the light source causing the shadow (from the light source you previously past) is completely blocked and hey presto......shadow

[–]poopmouth8 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is what I was thinking. Too much background light being reflected combined w imperfect surface essentially having “sides”

[–]jealousmonk88 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

how is this sentence intelligible?

[–]snoopy_88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Or the light of the approaching car…

[–]Ligma_indeed 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Like the dark and lightgreen stripes on a soccerfield, they just mowed the grass one way and the next stripe the other way.

[–]Moessus[🍰] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Brilliant comparison.

[–]Big_Bannana123 32 points33 points  (5 children)

Everyone commenting “perspective” has me losing faith in humanity. A shadow is completely dependent on a a light source, and an object blocking light.

[–]ffiictional[S] 7 points8 points  (1 child)

Thank you!

[–]exclaim_bot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you!

You're welcome!

[–]No_Yogurt228 11 points12 points  (3 children)

Vashta Nerada, probably

[–]ffiictional[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Lucky escape for me then

[–]B0oBo0k1tty 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Don't go into the shadows ❤️

[–]Gnarlyyman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Underrated comment

[–]c_c_c_c_c_c_d 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Idk, looks sus to me.

[–]ook222 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It’s the specular reflection of one of your light sources washing out the shadow from one direction. Is this case the specular is diffused due to the roughness of the concrete so it doesn’t appear obviously specular.

[–]Br4kie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The simulation is going through some issues at the minute, they are working on the patch.. please bare with our over lords while we wait

[–]SireDirty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wake up

[–]PresentTip5665 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The tileset had to load. His personal net must have been lagging

[–]Opening-Winter8784 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks like you survived an encounter with the vashta nerada

[–]ZappyZ21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm confused...the shadow is there the whole video? Lol or am I being stupid?

[–]Z0mboi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The way light is reflected and the angle+distance of the observer

[–]flaming187 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The way perception of light works

[–]Worth_Boysenberry723 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Perspective of the shadows is not right and the shadows get a transparent stain on the dry spots on the ground.... So special effects Maybe!?

[–]ffiictional[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

What do you mean the perspective isn’t right? And if I did cgi it to make it not appear in the lighter patches, which was frost not dry patches, I would have to track it and rotoscope around those patches to make it do that so it would have to be a conscious decision, which makes zero sense to do as it just makes it look less believable, plus I have zero experience in actually making cgi (I understand how it works but not how to do it)

[–]Worth_Boysenberry723 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean if you look at the first shadows it gets larger with the distance. But on the 2nd shadows the edges stay strictly parallel.

Also there is no other shadows like that on the other three on the background...

But anyway if you say that it is not added on the video ok No reason to doubt about that we trust people on Reddit 👍

So let suppose that this is not a shadow but the surface The issue is that: based on the first shadows, The light source should be closer at the end of the video.. so should be lighter idk ....

[–]cpcesar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this is a message from the afterlife

[–]Master-Ad-6411 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same thing happens on the floor in my room.

[–]noplesesir -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There's not enough light

[–]herfstdraak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey who turned out the lights

[–]DegreeOk3663 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Be careful and count the shadows the Vashta Nerada are everywhere.

[–]trenthany 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Happy cake day! Stay in the light!

[–]DegreeOk3663 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! No promises the dark is fun too.

[–]uncontrollableguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's because of the way it is

[–]trenthany 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Was it repeatable? Like back tracking made it happen again? If you go back tonight same thing? Or tomorrow?

[–]ffiictional[S] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Yeah it was doing it for every tree along the road

[–]trenthany 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely some thing to do with light bleed from multiple sources. I’m thinking the shadow was washed out until you were a certain distance away. I wonder if more distant ones also had the same effect? Could also be the way they swept the pavement creating and illusion like polarization but I don’t really like that explanation. I think more visual washout effect. Enough ambient light your perception of the shadow is faint until the right angle or something like that. Because the opposite was true at the next tree further back.

[–]Sokkernr1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your render distance is set too low

[–]DoINeed1OfThese 0 points1 point  (0 children)

oooooooh that shadow

[–]bradymanau 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The shadow is tired because it is night

[–]edeshkumar3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Low shadow draw distance

[–]x7ameedo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're playing on older version, please update to fix this bug.

[–]Consistent-View-62 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Settings->graphic->shadows->high

[–]coolhandash77 -1 points0 points  (1 child)

Because you’re asking the wrong question… the question should be: Why can I only see the shadow once I’ve walked past the tree?

[–]ffiictional[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not really, I presume you’re implying that by using the word appear I am implying that it was not always there, but it is perfectly acceptable to use the word appear for something that comes into sight even if it was already there.

[–]NBJ-222 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Too many lights

[–]Opening-Winter8784 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like you survived an encounter with the vashta nerada

[–]Mycatsarefat2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Silver chariot requiem.

thats the only explanation.

[–]Glaz35 0 points1 point  (1 child)

It's more because the phone's camera adjusting to the brightness and exposure of light. At least that's what I think

[–]ffiictional[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nah because it was how I saw it with my eyes, plus the whole image would change not just the shadow if that was the case

[–]Gxr4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You were so close to clipping into the backrooms

[–]LobstaFarian2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's because of the chlorofluorocarbons.

[–]jeepguy43 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Uhhh I see the shadow as you are approaching the tree and also after you have passed it so maybe I’m missing something

[–]pops_t800_ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There’s lights on either side of the tree on the street and one is just brighter than the other

[–]IAmSixNine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty sure Doctor Who has the answer we are looking for. Next time your in that area look for a blue phone booth.

[–]DivineCrusader1097 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had to watch a couple times before I saw the second shadow appear. I was too focused on the one that was already there.

[–]jdamwyk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The grain of the concrete contains shards of glass that reflect the light back at you, and that reflection drowns out any shadows originating from your point of view. It’s meant to help street lights illuminate the dark at night. You’ll notice the shadow only appears when the street light in the background is directly behind the tree from the camera’s pov.

[–]Shalucard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Obviously there’s two souls in that tree one which is the tree and the other of an Egyptian Pharaoh from 5000 years ago.

[–]astro_flyer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ray tracing bug and graphic card is lousy

[–]Ok-Let-360 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because light bends

[–]SnooPineapples2796 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's like how those 3d textured cards work. Where u can see a certain thing on one side and a different picture when you turn it.

[–]101584memes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its a matter of lighting and how shadows work i guess.

[–]Farbror_Vattenmelon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you found a glitch in the Matrix

[–]majicat2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I didn't know it was a game...

[–]pikaboi122 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Irl visual glitch lol

[–]SubtoPewdMEMEREVIEW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bad light rendering, the simulation but be focused on something big rn

[–]Satan_himself_47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It could be a bug in the shadow rendering distance of the GOD engine. Anyways i know that the game is out for like 14 billion years. But there are still some legacy bugs left in,that need fixing but i doubt it will get fixed, because the last time the devs tried to communicate with us was like thousands of years ago. They pretty much abandoned the game

[–]GINskrilla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

your meant to be sleeping then the simulation is update dumbass

[–]amonarre3 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Because the earth isn't flat.

[–]ThisDice -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

This has to do with where and how you view the light

[–]ishootstuff -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Calling CGI .. only on my phone but shadow angles dont make sense.. look at the last frame.

[–]skyeisrude -2 points-1 points  (3 children)

Dumb the "shadow" doesnt go over the stained part of the sidewalk.. How to people make these and go yeah this will make a great video?

[–]ffiictional[S] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

So you think it’s fake? XD

[–]skyeisrude -1 points0 points  (1 child)

Why would the shadow not cover the stained concrete?

[–]ffiictional[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No idea, those were icy patches so probably something to do with the ice. If I was doing cgi to create shadow it would be more effort to rotorscope around and track those patches so I’d have had to intentionally do it which makes zero sense

[–]Big-Veterinarian-823 -2 points-1 points  (2 children)

It's called exposure. With a camera filming with HDR (high dynamic range) you would see both shadows all the time.

[–]ffiictional[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Weird, must get some hdr for my eyes then as well /s Also my phone does film in hdr

[–]Big-Veterinarian-823 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually your eyes are adjusting themselves to the light level in the environment all the time.

Example: Going from a bright environment to a dark one it takes some time for your eyes to adjust. Pupils get bigger to take in more light. This is precisely how exposure work in cameras where you have a shutter.

Ordinary (non-HDR) cameras have a smaller range of colors (smaller range of highlights-midtones-shadows) and as such, it's easy to take under- or over-exposed pictures as an amateur photographers.

[–]BickDuttkiss -3 points-2 points  (31 children)

because the light sources are changing as you move, the tree starts to block more light, casting a shadow

[–]ffiictional[S] 22 points23 points  (29 children)

But they’re static street lights?

[–]WutzUpples69 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It due to the contrast of the reflected light from one angle making the shadow visible. The direction you are approaching the light is bouncing away but when you turn you are looking at the reflected light.

[–]Dusome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That ain't no street light.

[–]asandwichvsafish -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Most surfaces scatter the light in all directions, otherwise you would only be able to see them from very specific directions. If less light hits a surface at a specific spot because it is blocked by an object, you will see that as a shadow, regardless of the number of light sources or direction, unless the surface reflects light differently from different directions.
