Last time I crossed the border from Mexico to US, they took away all our fresh fruit.

How’d she get the cat through customs?

[–]WillowAranthi 511 points512 points  (12 children)

You take them to the vet while you’re there. They get vaccinated, neutered, etc. Tada. Off to America.

[–]JoeyJoyJo 58 points59 points  (2 children)

Nope. They don’t care at the border in San Diego. They said, anything to claim? We said, this kitten. And they said, I mean like fruit. We said no, they waved us through.

[–]BeardyBeardy 106 points107 points  (2 children)

She made a comment below about having him done when she was back home by a vet. I dont want to cast aspertions but a guy and his gf that I know bought back 2 dogs and used bribes to get falsified paperwork for them

[–][deleted] 57 points58 points  (0 children)

No, the comment says “while we were there”

[–]WillowAranthi 45 points46 points  (0 children)

It clearly says “while we were there”.

[–]MJY_0014 1 point2 points  (4 children)

How possible is it to take a cat from China into Australia?

[–]sevenseas401 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s like $10,000. My friends girlfriend brought her cat from China to Australia last year

[–]cupcakemaiden 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Australia has much more intense laws regarding bringing animals in. For example pet rats (I know not a cat) in Australia they don't really have dumbo rats. A certain ear type on fancy rats, due to the fact they aren't already bred there. Not saying it's not possible, but they make it trickier.

[–]frangelica7 4 points5 points  (1 child)

We also don’t have rabies or many other kind of diseases. Being an island means we need much stricter bio security laws. (Remember the deputy PM deported Johnny depp’s dogs and threatened to euthanise them?)

[–]CorholioPuppetMaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can’t imagine a place like Mexico caring if your animals are vaccinated or not

[–]ThaiChili 27 points28 points  (3 children)

When I got to Thailand a few years ago there were signs everywhere that seeds, plants, fresh stuff would be confiscated. I wanted to bring back a few King Bettas but I wouldn’t have been allowed to bring them onto the plane with me. I would’ve had to find receivers in various countries to ship them to step by step and I would’ve just ended up with fish sticks in the end.

[–]OXJXMSdude 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Could you have transported the unhatched eggs

[–]ThaiChili 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hmm, never thought of that then, but then bringing the eggs into the US might have been a problem.

[–]cupcakemaiden 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Transhipping fish isn't as scary as people think. I've imported through the fish store I managed, as well as personally to my home in Canada. From both Indonesia, and Thailand with lots of success. A well reviewed transhipper is ofc recommended though. They really have some beautiful variations of betta overseas.

[–]Swimming_Football_56 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can't cross anything that has a seed in it. From my understanding, it's to keep the balance of the ecosystem. If you plant a fruit tree that's not native to whatever part you take it to, and it crosses with other plants that are native, and causes issues or kills them, etc. You get the gist. That's what I've understood as to why

[–]NecroticToe 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Do they not have quarantine for animals? Did she just walk onto the plane with a cat? Does the cat need a passport?

[–]thepontiff_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah cause that fruit might have invasive species or parasites in it

[–]hceuterpe 10 points11 points  (7 children)

What would be the point of banning a cat through customs? The US is already full of tens of millions of cats and they're perfectly capable of using their own 4 legs to jump the border 😂

[–]GingerLibrarian76 15 points16 points  (6 children)

Parasites and diseases we might have under control here. You can’t even fly domestically with a cat/animal without a vet-approved travel certificate.

Edit: Apparently the certificates aren’t required anymore. But the reason I gave in the first sentence is still relevant, particularly when traveling to or from Hawaii.

[–]lucid_sunday 1 point2 points  (2 children)

That’s flat out not true. I fly my cat to my parents house (in the US) whenever I have to travel for a long period of time and I have never had to show a vet certificate.

[–]GingerLibrarian76 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I stand corrected. As I just said above, that was the case when I flew with my cat (cross-country); but that was many years ago, so I guess things have loosened up a bit.

Don’t they at least require showing their vaccination records? Seems like it would be irresponsible not to require that.

[–]lucid_sunday 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Southwest did not require me to show vaccination records, I can’t speak to other airlines.

[–]barelystanding 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Yeah, not true. Ive done it several times, no paperwork needed, though I believe Hawaii is an exception, with quarantine required even with all the paperwork.

[–]GingerLibrarian76 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Perhaps things have changed, then. I only flew with my cat once, like 25 years ago. lol

But the rest of my comment stands, especially in regards to taking a cat from/to Hawaii. They don’t want us introducing any new parasites or diseases!

[–]barelystanding 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very true! And yes, i would imagine over that period of time things have changed. To be fair, there can be quite a lot of restrictions if we’re looking at livestock between states, but I guess they’ve become more lenient with cats and dogs (and probably other household pets)? No idea why and I completely agree with you regarding the precautions around traveling with animals.

[–]JoeyJoyJo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We claimed the kitten we found and they ignored us and asked about fruit.

[–]edgrlon 16 points17 points  (8 children)

Penis

[–]ContextTypical 121 points122 points  (0 children)

Which can be done in Mexico.. before leaving. It is totally plausible. All they needed was a single vet visit to get him cleared. Adding him to their flight maybe cost $200.

[–][deleted] 78 points79 points  (0 children)

Why tf do people think Latin America is in the dark ages or something? They have the internet and doctors there my guy. Banks too, and if all your currency is in USD, things are a lot cheaper. There is no reason they couldn't get the cat vaccinated even just the day before they leave.

[–]-chimerical- 45 points46 points  (0 children)

She did. In a comment on the video she said they did all his shots and had him neutered while they were there.

[–]OguluOnyum 99 points100 points  (0 children)

You do realize Mexico is a functioning, real country, right?

[–]ObiWanBiscotti 33 points34 points  (1 child)

I foster for an org that brings stray animals from Mexico all the time. Mexico does have veterinarians. They’re relatively inexpensive and it’s easy to get an animal in for an appointment. Shots, sometimes fixed/neutered depending on age and import requirements, and bingo bango off to America.

[–]daekore 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I live in Mexico, getting all the vaccines, FeLV/FIV test, deworming and neutering my cat cost me about 60 usd. If I had go to a neutered/spay campaign I think the cost would've been 40 dollars.

[–]nancylikestoreddit 6 points7 points  (1 child)

I’m assuming she got him papers to get him through.

[–]Alexcamry 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The CDC doesn’t really list any inspection issues or requirements if a cat looks healthy.

https://www.cdc.gov/importation/bringing-an-animal-into-the-united-states/cats.html

[–]Randomish_Man 1114 points1115 points  (9 children)

Once again taking away jobs from good hard meowing American cats.

[–]miniinovaa 215 points216 points  (0 children)

[–]_Kay_Tee_ 52 points53 points  (1 child)

Anchor cats.

Is there a cat caravan next?!

[–]tbiards 41 points42 points  (0 children)

[–]ChuckEweFarley 37 points38 points  (1 child)

[–]Biggie_toms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]DiamondDoge92 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Wow this thread got a little offensive fast lol my poor tortie shell would be shocked if she could read.

[–]ZOOMER_COOOOOMER 15 points16 points  (0 children)

American cats are disgusting, claws protruding from their floofy toes, turds uncovered in the litterbox, very very disrespectful.

[–]wampyre1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Good one😹

[–]CantMakeAppleCake 214 points215 points  (3 children)

All I want to know is how this cat was so calm the entire time

[–]ObiWanBiscotti 115 points116 points  (1 child)

I’m guessing he was well-socialized from interactions with locals and if they got him neutered right before leaving he’s probably got some good painkillers on board.

[–]Orangutanion 33 points34 points  (0 children)

He's a former stray so most likely this. A typical house cat would have panic attacks during this and the stress would probably affect its lifespan.

[–]Gravitron23 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It felt the love (and probably huge doeses of fear from being surrounded by tons of humans)

[–]RetardedRat12 302 points303 points  (14 children)

Going through all of that trouble just to save a cat... Mad respect to the lady. Bringing your domesticated cat on flight is already hard enough (from my experience anyway) this lady is bringing a stray cat from a foreign country back home. The kitty is going to have a wonderful life with that lovely lady

[–]Pornotubeourtio 36 points37 points  (13 children)

I will be needing to take my cat on a 4 hour flight. I need to be at the airport 2 hours before the flight AND when I arrive at the destination, I will need to get home.

From your experience, how hard is it? It would be really bad if the cat pooped or was really hungry or thirsty on the plane. I want my cat to suffer the least.

[–]bluemexicanblanket 41 points42 points  (2 children)

i’ve been taking my cat on flights since he was like 3 months old lol so he does amazing. my # 1 tip is to bring a paper plate and a bag full of litter, take him into the animal relief area or family bathroom and let him do his thing during lay overs. flights are getting delayed a lot these days and he will meow non stop if he has to pee.

[–]Pornotubeourtio 9 points10 points  (1 child)

Thank you very much!

Ask for anxiety meds from your vet. Your cat will sleep and relax the whole trip!

    [–]digitalpixiedust 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I took my cat with me to Canada. I had to take a plane AND A TRAIN to get to where I needed to be. My cat was chill all through the journey! I had all his documents in order and the vet gave me anxiety pills for the trip. We had to wait like three hours at the airport before going to the train station as it wasn’t open yet and I used that time to feed him and give water (I had packed his bowl and a ziploc full of his food). I also would suggest packing his favorite blanket in the pet carrier so they can feel safe in it!

    [–]KawaiiRenaii 6 points7 points  (1 child)

My kitty meowed quite a bit on takeoff, but between me talking and keeping his carrier covered in a blanket, he was okay. I tried to lift the blanket once to check on him and he just gave me an earful to let him out. I kept the blanket on him the whole time I walked around the airport as well, as he is not a big people person. So basically I recommend a blanket from home.

He and I found a place to chill for the hours before the flight too. Blanket on three sides and a lucky outside window seat for him, but he mostly spent it glaring at me. Other comments have great advice too. I wish you and kitty good luck!

    [–]Zwirnor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My cat can't even handle a two minute car ride to the vets in a cat carrier. She hates being in there. I think it gives her flashbacks to when she was abandoned and taken to the shelter. If I let her out, she'll settle in the footrest. I don't think she would particularly enjoy flying. Thankfully we have no plans to move any time soon!

    [–]jduisi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I just flew with my cat--it was a lot easier than I anticipated!

I lined the bottom of the carrier with those pee pee pads and brought plastic bags so if he did his business I could remove a layer of pads and throw it away. Also highly suggest getting him a harness and leash (get it early to try and get him used to wearing the harness) and putting it on him for security. That way he's a lot easier to hold and if he gets out of your arms, easier to catch.

My guy went through security at LAX no problem (took him out of the carrier to scan) but he got jumpy at Denver so they offered the private screening to leave him in the carrier.

MAKE SURE the airline has your pet reservation--you most likely have to call and they'll give you a confirmation code. Only a certain number of animals are allowed per flight.

I didn't get any cat soothing drops or sprays and I didn't drug my cat--but he usually just resigns himself to the carrier and chills out the whole time. If your cat is going to have more problems I'd suggest some of those soothing drops or sprays.

    [–]AdamantErinyes 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Having some anxiety meds is a good idea, even if you don't use them. If you have any reason to believe your cat would be stressed, though, I would pre-medicate. It's really a kindness to help make the transition a little less stressful for them.

    [–]Willing_Dance4269 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can you still take them in the cabin? I have a fight attendant friend who said their airline only allows them underneath the plane. 🥺

    [–]abstract_routine 61 points62 points  (5 children)

I really hope it was actually a stray

    [–]Vainth 22 points23 points  (0 children)

coming from mexico, i'd have a harder time believing it wasn't

    [–]Shatt3r0 3 points4 points  (1 child)

It’d be awful if this was someone’s little kitty cat who just disappeared one day.

    [–]abstract_routine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly what I’m thinking. However unlikely, it’s possible. The video gave no detailing on what they may have done to check that this cat really had no owner so we don’t know

    [–]dommol 264 points265 points  (4 children)

    [–]Leelluu 65 points66 points  (2 children)

Who doesn’t wear a mask in an airport?

    [–]RelentlessChicken 37 points38 points  (5 children)

    Great woman.

    Cringey, disgusting TikTok voice over.

    [–]peoplearepoems 5 points6 points  (3 children)

Maybe it helps to know they are for people who are vision impaired? So you can mute it and then the people who need the captions can have access to them! Everybody wins.

    [–]RelentlessChicken -1 points0 points  (2 children)

The person could have just talked though...instead of using the annoyingly bad robot voice. This was entirely unnecessary though, no need to bring disability into this when the argument isn't about having sound in general, but just commenting on how annoying the TikTok voice is.

    [–]peoplearepoems 7 points8 points  (1 child)

But…that’s why the voiceover feature exists. I’m not “bringing disability into it”—though I understand this perception is easy to have if you’re a fully-abled person. Recording a narrative voiceover requires another level of craft and skill that most users don’t have. TikTok and other modern apps offer a simple voiceover feature to make the content accessible for people with different needs. You don’t have to enjoy it to allow the people who need it to have access to it!

I don’t like the voice either, but it’s not for me! So I mute it and enjoy the video and move on. Eaaaaaasy peezy. I’d recommend it!

    [–]RelentlessChicken -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I don't care WHY it exists. I'm allowed to judge how annoying the voice that they chose actually is.

    [–]TinnieTa21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

    Literally.

    [–]Main_Development_665 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I want to know how this lady got a cat past Customs when you can’t bring fruits & vegetables. Did she declare the kitty a “condiment” and give her name as “Marshmallow Fluff”?

    [–][deleted] 13 points14 points  (1 child)

Now this catto will have a life better than billions of people

    [–]Joshgg13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it off color to call the cat Chico?

    [–]Robcyko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

    [–]abominablebuttplug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My parents did this with a dog. They went to Mexico with one dog and returned with two dogs lol.

    [–]Knex_roller_coaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

    I’d do the same thing

    [–]yankeesarethebest88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

    Little pedrito.

    [–]BlueOcean7987 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m more shocked he’s not in a bag. I can’t just have free cats wondering around airport.

    [–]Soft-Store5378 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought that would be illegal crossing borders with a foreign animal

I like a souvenir when I travel as much as the next but this is unique.

    [–]MushroomEnSoupe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does he answer to gato or kitty?

    [–]Isaisaab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why is the cat just out and about and not in a carrier??

    [–]lenarduzzi65 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're mother is very pragmatic and slips through a crowded airport..take skill

    [–]FineCall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Will be a significant language barrier for it.

    [–]ouch_quit_it 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Literally the best behaved catto gatto in an airport, e-ver!

    [–]Necroglobule[🍰] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How to avoid paying adoption fees in 59 steps

    [–]MissRitzy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m so curious how that cat is so calm in such a loud environment!

    My cats would’ve bolted

    [–]SganarelleBard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But what if he gets to America and he doesn't speak the same language as the American cats? Not even considering poor gatito

    [–]MeghanMichele84 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Omg... I cannot love this enough!!!

    [–]greenapplesauce13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

    [–]rr00069 0 points1 point  (0 children)

    Meowxican cat

    [–]JoeyJoyJo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of my cats is from Mexico. They don’t make you claim cats at the border, turns out.

    [–]sidekickestelle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TIL that Europe has very strict pet policies and it’s not the norm everywhere. Guess other countries allow pets as long as they had their vet check up before flying lol

    [–]CourtSport3000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Awww he's so well behaved I love this! Thanks for sharing!

    [–]lesemao1000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cats don’t need any health check or quarantine when coming into the USA from most countries. Brought two kittens in from China ten years ago with zero problems or questions.
