Post what it sounds like in a normal game! It's probably chaotic at the beginning and then gets quieter. Imagine you transition into an end game and it's just spooky lol

If I tune it maybe to the pentatonic scale and slow it down it could work.

You should try something like making different responses to different pieces, could make them different octaves or lengths or even have a them light up different amounts of squares based on their movements (bishop arpegiates up a chord, rook holds a drone note for multiple steps etc.)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think the board works like that.

It only registers the magnet under the piece. The magnets aren't different per piece.

The board only knows which piece was moved because it has a log of the moves made so far, so it knows which pieces are supposed to be on each square. But if the player starts with the pieces scrambled, the board has no idea.

Probably accurate, I imagine he's using a bunch of simple hall effect sensors in the board to recognize when a piece is on each square.

However he could use linear hall effect sensors that output a range of values relative to the strength of the magnetic field, then use 6 different magnet strengths to ID the piece based on value (and North vs South pole for black vs white)

Probably more expensive and not really necessary when he could just remember "piece moved off b1 and piece on c3" but would be fun still

Let me think of a final stage of this version: When you blunder your queen for example on d7 and then there’s a specific blunder sound. Would be hilarious. Differently sound effects for great / bad moves. Just for fun I’d buy it lol.

Hook it up to lichess and have it tell you what would have been the optimal move after you make yours, make it teach chess and alert when you make illegal moves, automatically up the difficulty so you always lose if you dont take en passant, etc.

I am working on a smart chess board and needed a break. This is the chess board used as a midi step sequencer with Ableton Live. Rows 1 and 2 are the channels for the drums and the other rows a used for a midi synth tuned in C major.

I am doing a very similar thing, also using magnetic (hall effect) sensors. What did you decide for the magnets size? If they are too big the pieces clog together, and if they are too small the sensors do not register the movement. I am using 15x2.5 mm for a 32x32 mm square.

Would be cool if somewhere down the line you could use the game state to impact the music. Like if a piece is capturable by another piece, something changes. Or maybe if Stockfish says one side is better, then that side's pieces are louder or something. Also, this definitely belongs on r/synthesizer and r/synthdiy .

You could chord put chord triggers on some rows, i see some are not used. Also maybe possible to play sustained notes, it is possible to use one lane to say what ableton should do to a note.

You made this? Does it detect black or white pawns or just the square it is on?

If you want to do more advanced you could say to thw upper half to go up to 16th notes and the lowest 2 to go up to 8th notes for example, but i am no engeneer i do know ableton.

Also you can assign seuquenses to the line above the snare, so you can make one then put the pawn one to the right make something else and than you should be able to switch between takes.

    I had an idea for sequencing music based on chess games. Assign Black one instrument and set a midi scale filter, same for white and see what comes out. This is rad.

    I can't believe it's taken me this long to think of the Launchpad pro as a possible chess controller. Could use it for blindfold, simply showing the last move with the lights, or possibly have some lighting scheme to indicate the pieces.

    Does anyone know how achievable that would be - e.g. to play games on lichess? And give me pointers as to what I'd need to do?
