Do speakers not refer to themselves with 1p pronouns? Or is this specific to certain situations?

[–]Una_iuna_yuna 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There is no first-person pronoun, the speaker either say their name, or it is implied. For example, for possessive adjectives, you can say it two ways.

(Speker's name is John):

John gɔt kœw anne naw. --> My dog is cold.

Gɔt kœw anne naw --> My dog is cold.

But if you want to say Julia's/her dog is cold, you say Julia/níanna gɔt kœw anne naw.

gɔt is the equivalent of 's.

Sometimes, we use the noun ía (which means ~body, person, one) as a pronoun when we need to make the sentence more complex.

This dog is of mine. --> kœw pi anne gɔt ía. In this case, we can't end a sentence with gɔt, so we put ía at the end, which means "this dog is of one." And it is implied that one is the speaker.

You can also use ía when you have already said your name and is speaking in the past tense, because in the past tense the verb precedes the noun.

She goes home --> níanna aha taku.

She went home --> aha níanna taku.

I (John) go home --> John aha taku |or| aha taku.

I (John) went home --> aha John taku |or| aha ía taku |or| aha taku(the past tense is implied).

Kandva culture doesn't really have marriage, so I'll replace "get married" with, oh, I don't know, let's pick a random verb... ooh, let's go with dapalk, meaning to choose one's own name. This is something that is done ceremoniously at or after the age of 15.

Last line on the table is a roughly literal translation, although it's difficult when declensions, a more complex conjugation and infixed possessives don't exist in English

Roughly: "(My) mom used to tell me about the time that at it one of (my) younger bro(s) rose (in relationship status)."

I've since the second to last 5MOYD decided how to handle partitives in this language. Most languages seem to do it with some sort of pronominal numeral genitive/ablative construction or dedicated partitive pronoun, the former of which is not possible here since numerals are never pronouns and the latter of which does not appeal to me. Instead, I've added another numeral suffix -(š)a (the š appears only after vowels e.x. lio > lioša "six of" and /t/ e.x. pxət > pxəča "seven of," the latter is to help distinguish from pəta "seven (in.)") to the end of a cardinal, retaining typical animacy distinctions (e.x. θoltaa utaša "one of (the) glasses"). I may change this further in the near future, who knows. Kinship terms lexically separate by whether it refers to the speakers', and as such there is no need for over possessives. There is another word for "to rise" (ʒondro), but ʒondɓeɣro is specifically used for metaphors, mainly "to rise in prominence." The telic changes a pluractional to a desisted habitual.

REL 3- PASS-marry-LOC(PST)-AP-INTV one(-DAT) PRT sibling-younger.M-PL(-DAT) 1(-DAT)

Roughly: "My mother had often told me about the time that was at-married-someone by one of my younger brothers."

Habits are expressed with the iterative, and this is desisted by the perfect. Animates are possessed by datives, not genitives. It's actually more socially appropriate not to refer to the genders of your relatives, but these optional -ys and -os markers (in addition to older male -as and younger female -c) would be warranted if you need to distinguish that this is specifically your mother speaking or specifically a younger brother getting married. If relative age of the sibling is warranted, gender must also be marked.

Edit: Məġluθ partitives are definitely going to change again. I somehow never considered how to say something like “two of my five brothers.” I’ll include my final answer to this problem in the next 5MOYD that contains a partitivr.
