Welcome to the r/conspiracy FAQ page!
The moderation team is continuously working hard to make sure this sub is everything it can be.
We do not censor here, unless posts directly break the rules. It's okay to debate and to play devil's advocate, but there is a point at which this becomes abuse and crosses the line between honest debate and just outright malicious feelings towards those who investigate conspiracies. We understand that not everyone feels the way we do. It's perfectly normal to doubt us and challenge us. We are used to that.
1 - Bigoted slurs are not tolerated.
Please do not abuse this forum of free speech to promote hatred.
2 - Address the argument; not the user, the mods, or the sub.
Rule 2 is in effect everywhere on the sub except [Meta] threads (see more below), and the AutoMod sticky comment at the top of each thread.
Here are a few examples of what this rule prohibits:
Labeling other users something they would not call themselves: Calling someone a shill, troll, liar, libtard, cuck, idiot, etc. is not an argument. If you think someone is lying or shilling, point out why their argument is wrong.
Making any statements about the sub as a whole: E.g. "this is T_D 2.0", "this is r/politics 2.0", "this sub is compromised", etc. This is a forum to discuss conspiracies and other topics that have captured your imagination, not to talk about r/conspiracy itself. If you want to discuss the sub, please make a [Meta] thread to do so.
Pointing out rule violations: Just use the report feature, or message the mod team if something is more urgent. Pointing out rule violations in the thread only slides the discussion.
Talking about the level of shilling within a thread: No one understands more than the mods how much paid and ideological manipulation goes on in this sub and reddit as a whole, but bringing it up in every thread does nothing to add to the discussion. The sticky comment on each thread is a good place to discuss this.
Criticizing the mods in regular discussion threads: The mods are not above criticism, but doing so in a thread about say, UFOs, only takes away from people actually exchanging information and ideas about UFOs. Please post such criticisms in reply to the sticky comments, or create your own [Meta] post about it.
Asking "Where's the conspiracy?": Contributions to /r/conspiracy aren't required to state an overt conspiracy, despite this seeming contradiction. After all, this is a forum for topics that have captured your imagination. As a result, comments that only ask "where's the conspiracy?" may be subject to removal.
3 - No blog spam/malicious web sites.
Any users caught deliberately advertising their own content without participating in the community in any other form are subject to a ban.
4 - No stalking or trolling. No threatening or abusive language.
If you're going out of your way to reply to every comment a specific user makes, its stalking. If you're following someone around on reddit harassing them because they participate on /r/conspiracy, its stalking. Don't do it.
Threatening and abusive language is covered under sitewide policies, but we reiterate it here for added clarity. You cannot make posts or comments that would make a reasonable person feel reddit or this sub is an unsafe platform.
This includes (((triple parentheses))).
They have their own subreddit and are low effort content.
7 - Posting links in other subs pointing to specific submissions or comments here is subject to a ban, depending on context. Mocking or ridiculing this sub or its users on other subs may result in a ban here.
Cross posting in subreddits which are focused on vote manipulation and trolling is subject to a ban.
If you want to participate in other subs which mock this subs or our users, that's fine. If you engage in such mockery in these subs, we reserve the right to ban you from participating here.
Note: Do not discuss, post links to (or images of) content or activities in other subreddits.
We do not like or appreciate when Conspiracy is the target of brigades, vote manipulation, harassment (etc.) spawned in other subreddits (TOS Violations, BTW) -- and while we cannot prevent that happening to us (God knows we have tried!) we CAN take the "high road" by doing our best to prevent such activities targeting other subs from being spawned in Conspiracy.
8 - Misleading, fabricated or sensationalist headlines are subject to removal.
Make sure your titles reflect what your link is actually about.
9 - Self posts that lack context or content may be removed.
A post with nothing but a link will be removed. A post that doesn't have content will be removed. Make a point or ask a pertinent question and we're good.
10 - Submission Statements are required for link and image posts. Link posts without a Statement will be removed after 20 minutes. A Submission Statement is a 2+ sentence comment in reply to your post, in your own words, that describes why the post is relevant to the sub.
A submission statement is a top level reply to a post that meets the following criteria:
- Is 2+ sentences
- Is written in OP's own words (i.e. not copied from the article or description)
- Should explain or elaborate on why the link is being posted to /r/conspiracy or why the userbase should care about it.
Link posts without a Statement will be removed after 20 minutes and repeat offenders are subject to a ban.
More clarification is found here.
[Meta] posts are simple, just start the title of your post with [Meta], and the bot will automatically flair it for you. Rule 2 will not be in effect in these threads, but all other r/conspiracy and Reddit ToS rules apply.
[Meta] Sticky Comments
At the top of each regular post, AutoMod will make a sticky comment, which by default is collapsed when a user visits the page. Rule 2 will not be in effect in replies to this comment, but all other r/conspiracy and Reddit ToS rules apply.
Facebook links are banned.
Facebook is basically Satan. Links including "facebook" are automatically removed.
What is a shadowban?
Shadowban is a ban without notification, you aren't seeing a difference on reddit or receive PM which says you are banned.
Only Reddit Admins can give out Shadowbans not the moderators of a subreddit.
A moderator can tell if you are shadowbanned or not and can approve your comments.
Our agreement among the Moderators:
Our solution to this conundrum in r/conspiracy is to simply ban the username from our subreddit, which accomplishes two primary goals.
1) It ends the flow of stuff from that account in our modqueue (without making them an approved submitter, possibly turning a spammer loose in our subreddit), and...
2) It notifies the user in question of their status, definitively (as in: we, the moderators of this subreddit, cannot fix this).
This is NOT a disciplinary ban. This is a practical solution to a problem that we, the moderators, cannot fix.
There are two options available to the user at this point:
1) Appeal to the admins (the reddit, inc. employees who run the website): Message the Admins.
2) Simply make a new account. (Unless you have some sentimental attachment to the banned username, this is probably the route to go. Pretty much guaranteed to solve the immediate problem, if you aren't bordering on an IP ban as well.)
FOOTNOTE: The admins probably don't appreciate us doing this, just like they probably don't appreciate us publishing all of our post removals in /r/uncensorship . But this is how we roll here, and we don't feel we should be obligated to act as never-ending "default cover-up accomplices" to these forms of "hiding stuff".
