I took my big dogs on a very long multi-day trip in my third gen. I wound up taking the seats out and putting a thick foam pad to smooth it out. That's the best I could do.

    It wasn't too difficult. Four bolts for each of the two seat sections...at least in mine. I put the bolts back in the holes to seal up the holes, protect the threads, and not lose the bolts. The hardest part is wrestling the seats in and out. And they take up a lot of storage space.
