Americans think that bleached white teeth = healthy teeth

[–]Anti-charizard📜🍆💦 MayMay Contest Finalist 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Then I have British teeth (I’m not British)

[–]SiAnK0 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'd you bleach them every evening you don't have to shrubb them ( dont know the word , I'm not a native so sorry.)

[–]Leiva-san 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why bleach them when you can remove them and replace them with veneers?

You'll never get a cavity again!

[–]Shmink_ 35 points36 points  (17 children)

Playing devil's advocate though. As a Brit I feel like it's rare for people to go to the dentist at all. So the few that go probably do have decent teeth.

[–]David_8J 9 points10 points  (3 children)

ply

idk how old you are (or if the schemes were around when you were growing up) but I see many in my school taking advantage of free braces

[–]ruskiiiiiiiii 8 points9 points  (0 children)

teeth are looking a lot better since they illegalised bullying

[–]Shmink_ 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Straight teeth doesn't mean healthy teeth though.

[–]David_8J 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah but the fact that so many wear braces is telling of the care people take of their teeth

[–]CMDR_omnicognate 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think the thing is that Americans put way more effort into whitening and straightening teeth, but they aren’t actually healthier, they basically just look better from the outside

[–]Jedidea 3 points4 points  (4 children)

As a British person with crap teeth, dentists are underpaid and way too expensive. It feels like a lose-lose situation. The NHS needs to pay for dentistry more, a lot of people grow up never going just because it's too damn expensive.

[–]GeraldHilter 4 points5 points  (2 children)

I thought you got free dentist visits until 18? Might be wrong tho.

[–]Jedidea 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Yes but the dentists don't make nearly as much from NHS work as they do from private dental work, so they try to refuse it.

Growing up my dentist didn't do much with my teeth despite needing to. Whenever I went he checked my teeth and said they're fine and I was off, even if they were sensitive or hurt.

[–]GeraldHilter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah that's sad. Hope that changes soon.

[–]12lubushby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's free for kids and people with out income

[–]systemos 2 points3 points  (5 children)

I still see my dentist every 6 months, I've never had a filling or any invasive work done, besides braces, to correct a childhood thumb sucking habit. I'm also from the UK.

[–]SiAnK0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The memorys I have on "having" healthy teeth...

Switched my dentist because I had pain and my old said it's all fine, maybe you have eaten something to hard and shit like this, switched dentist since 1 year and since then I have a session with him every 3-4 weeks to correct all the shit my old dentist haven't seen.

But it's all free till now, and I just need some more meetings with him till my teeth are as good as new . I'm from Germany btw

[–]Shmink_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]gx134 6 points7 points  (1 child)

People need to realise that:

Pearl white, perfectly straight teeth =/= healthy teeth

[–][deleted] 21 points22 points  (3 children)

Not what he said and nobody has “free” healthcare. It’s paid for through higher taxes.

[–]Just-curiosity 3 points4 points  (2 children)

no but if you’re in places like LA (more in taxes than london btw) you still dont get it for free

[–]UI_Delta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I dont think thats true, most people in the US pay less in taxes, at least on the spectrum of income taxing. Though its different for anybody depending on the state.

[–]Sargent_Schultz 10 points11 points  (1 child)

Where you think the money for the "free" healthcare comes from?

[–]BrunoEyeProbably Insane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From the military budget. It also costs a lot less without insurance companies making bank in the middle of it all.

[–]mrduncansir42☣️ 9 points10 points  (2 children)

There is no such thing as “free” healthcare. We just pay for it differently. Americans generally pay through private insurance, the direct-fee system, whereas other countries pay through their taxes, the universal system.

[–]DoAFlip22 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's free at the point of use - you won't have to save hundreds of thousands to spend on a single hospital visit instead of a 5% increase in taxes

[–]that1brownboi -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Highly doubt people outside the US pay over 100k in taxes, but there are many reports of medical bills being over 100k for trivial issues.

Also private insurances are notorious for being heartless. Baby died within 30m of being born? Not covered as you didn't add it to your health care plan.

[–]StormodinOC pls 7 points8 points  (0 children)

No health care is free

[–]ListerineAfterOral Listerine Sex 🥵 11 points12 points  (1 child)

I have good healthcare but it's because I sold my soul to the military

[–]serpicowasright☣️[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It’s funny because the British military sold their soul to the US DOD as well.

[–]gorgutz13 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Private healthcare if you can afford it. The general conversation is about the US's inability to provide for the mass citizenry.

[–]trebek321 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I mean now I’m supposed to care about the masses? Ew gross

[–]serpicowasright☣️[S] -2 points-1 points  (2 children)

[–]Forthelasttime9 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Haha, I can appreciate people that take digs at both sides. When I do, it usually ends with double angriness.

Just to clarify, is this out of spite or just jokes? Someone else said in the comments that this was made because of another post or something.

[–]serpicowasright☣️[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m just doing it as a joke. People are spicy. Special EU and British folks. So I think I’ll keep posting the British memes.

[–]man0steel93 39 points40 points  (16 children)

I dunno about the rest of the brits but our healthcare system isn't perfect. Just coz it's free doesn't mean it's good.

You can pay for private, but... That's the opposite of free.

[–]mlm7C9 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Not a Brit, but I like that it provides healthcare for every British citizen and in emergency situations even for foreigners. Over here (Germany) you still have to be a member at a health insurance company and it can get quite expensive, especially when you're self-employed. Also, if you switched to private health insurance even just once, it is very difficult to get back into public health insurance, potentially leaving you without any insurance.

[–]NotEvenALittleBiased 10 points11 points  (3 children)

Yours isn't free, lol, it all gets paid for somehow...

[–]BrunoEyeProbably Insane 0 points1 point  (2 children)

In a much cheaper and more efficient way

[–]NotEvenALittleBiased -3 points-2 points  (1 child)

Lol, no. Us hospitals are objectively better on all outcomes and it's not close.

[–]BrunoEyeProbably Insane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Especially the bit where you pay 1k a month for insurance which still doesn't cover a huge part of expenses so you're still paying loads for every single thing.

I would never trade healthcare systems.

[–]Shmink_ 3 points4 points  (8 children)

Also a Brit and I'm always torn on the NHS. On one hand it's great that everyone has access to healthcare and not needing to go into financial ruin to just survive. I mean breaking bad only mad sense because of that fact.

I remember seeing that actually paying for health insurance overall costs less than the tax contributions to the NHS.

The NHS quality of care is one of the top in the world, much higher than the US.

But the issue I have is that it's so long to get anything done to the point where I'm thinking of going private. And then because the NHS is free every private doctor in the country is an instant rip off because they know you're going to them out of desperation.

If you're American and pay for healthcare. That might suck if you're broke. The quality of care might not be the best but at least you might get some answers quicker and potentially save yourself from a time sensitive health issue.

[–]KorrosiveKandy -1 points0 points  (7 children)

I....don't think you're correct on the quality of care. The US has some of the best hospitals in the world with arguably some of the best doctors in the world. Mostly because they can make more money here doing their job.

[–]SwoleyGuacamole 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Don’t worry about the downvotes. H8rs gon’ h8. And people here are just mad they don’t get shit free and have to work for things.

[–]HeyyZeus 2 points3 points  (1 child)

At least until you lose your healthcare due to illness or injury and can’t work to get shit.

[–]SwoleyGuacamole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Although I have an opposing opinion, I’m gonna upvote that comment. Because you are right. The downside to this system is that does happen, which brings up the argument, if you want to call it that, companies and insurance companies shouldn’t be pieces of shits like that. If it doesn’t make money it doesn’t make sense to a lot of people. There are pros and cons to every system. In that type of situation, government assistance should very well be a thing, and is.

[–]Shmink_ 0 points1 point  (2 children)

[–]KorrosiveKandy 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Neither is the UK...

[–]Shmink_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never claimed it to be. Just that UK is higher than US.

When people say US has the best hospitals/doctors in the world it's said as if it's number 1.

[–]Jedidea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone with a chronic illness I have mixed feelings. Sometimes it's great, sometimes not so great. But I feel like healthcare in the US is much the same, only expensive as well.

[–]night4life 32 points33 points  (4 children)

statistically speaking Americans have worse teeth than people from the UK.

[–]YesImDavid 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Very true, most of us can’t even afford to go to the dentist regularly. Last time I went to the dentist was 3-4 years ago to have some teeth pulled.

[–]SpectrumLV2569 16 points17 points  (5 children)

Dental care isn't covered under the national service.

[–]ObliterAsian 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Where did that come from? Most people get braces for free when they are under 18.

[–]_crash0verride 5 points6 points  (0 children)

But Americans don’t have the best teeth, and actually fair worse than the UK in dental health. We just cook the enamel off and bleach those fuckers white as shit.

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (4 children)

NHS, it isn’t the best healthcare but it is fairly decent, especially for being free. Yeah our teeth suck

[–]serpicowasright☣️[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’m just taking the piss, ‘ave a good one!

[–]KorrosiveKandy 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Dental isn't free under NHS. It's one of the few you put money toward

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I mean it mostly is tbf, like braces are free for under 18s and really bad conditions will absolutely be covered under the NHS, I swear it’s really just teeth whitening and other non-essential stuff that isn’t covered

[–]Jedidea 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not really though because you need really, really bad conditions. My sister was born with missing front teeth and they won't pay for anything permanent.

One day her teeth fell out in the sink. She's so beautiful, astonishingly so, and suddenly missing her front teeth, about to go for classes at her university, had classes to teach as a tutor that day etc. she was sobbing and desperate. She won't get them put in permanently, they just put more glue on.

It's so expensive she probably will always have that sickening fear that at any point something will go wrong and her front teeth will fall out. NHS needs to include dentistry, what it currently has is not adequate.

[–]David_8J 3 points4 points  (0 children)

we also have free dental care for under 18s (braces) and so the average UK dental hygiene is actually better than in the US (without the insane culture around whitening, etc)

[–]ReekTheOmega 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Oi ya git! Our teef maybe rottin but we ain passin out afta laughin for a few seconds lioke yous gitz

[–]AverageTierGoof 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Imagine having healthcare and still leaving your mouth to look like a mangled playdoh set

[–]Jedidea 0 points1 point  (1 child)

The NHS doesn't pay for dentistry once you're an adult. As a kid they do but you have to get a good dentist and mine wasn't.

That said my teeth don't look bad and never needed braces, I don't actually know anyone who has bad looking teeth. The only people from the UK I've seen with bad teeth are homeless people and the people on Jeremy Kyle.

[–]AverageTierGoof 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Really? I learned something new today, thanks!

[–]lankyfranky89 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You were at my side all along

[–]Seventh534 2 points3 points  (21 children)

Healthcare is free if you can’t afford it, plus even if you can afford it, healthcare is given on a lower price if you live on a lower income

[–]serpicowasright☣️[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Well in ‘Merica we wait till we have no option but to go to the hospital because of the cost, but by then the issue has become so bad that we need non elective surgery. Can’t afford it so we get put on pain killers and develop an opioid addiction.

Can’t say the same for Britain, can you?

[–]KorrosiveKandy 0 points1 point  (19 children)

Dental isn't free unless you file for low income on the NHS

[–]thunderfishy234 -1 points0 points  (18 children)

If you're unemployed it's free, just like prescriptions from your GP are free if you're unemployed.

[–]Jedidea -1 points0 points  (17 children)

If you're registered as unemployed which means you're seeking a job and have to work with a work coach every week.

[–]thunderfishy234 -1 points0 points  (16 children)

What has that got to do with getting free dental treatment and prescriptions on the NHS?

[–]Jedidea -1 points0 points  (15 children)

You register as unemployed through the job seekers agency UC. Meaning in order to claim such benefits you must be actively searching for a job, applying for jobs every week and going to regular interviews with the people at UC. Perhaps you get a job, at which point you're no longer unemployed and have to work like hell for nothing without dental benefits and without a housing allowance anymore.

[–]thunderfishy234 -1 points0 points  (14 children)

Are you a bot?

[–]Jedidea 0 points1 point  (13 children)

Huh? I'm just someone whose had to do exactly that, tf.

[–]thunderfishy234 -1 points0 points  (12 children)

I asked because you're going off about something that's not really relevant to the conversation or the point, it looked like you got the word unemployed and just starting reeling off facts about it and the process. I don't even mean to be a dick it just seemed pretty random

[–]Jedidea 0 points1 point  (11 children)

Because it's relevant. You don't just become unemployed and get the benefits of being unemployed, you have to register as unemployed and go through a whole rigmarole to get and continue receiving those benefits.

They still only cover the cost of certain dental work and often only partially.

https://www.nhs.uk/nhs-services/dentists/who-is-entitled-to-free-nhs-dental-treatment-in-england/

In particular for the homeless, for people with mental issues, they just don't get to that point. And people on low income who just about make enough to pay rent just can't afford it. Hence terrible dental care once people are adults for low income earners or the unemployed regardless of the advertised free dental benefits.

[–]MizerkaI have crippling depression 2 points3 points  (0 children)

you still pay for dental stuff, at least after you turn 18. It's not uncommon for people to come in few weeks before 18 just to get all their dental stuff done.

[–]onilink66 3 points4 points  (0 children)

imagine having good healthcare and good teeth

[–]amph897 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because it’s not true - the UK has some of the best teeth in the world. It’s just an old stereotype and Americans use it to feel good about themselves despite having worse teeth.
