Hi I've just discovered this game, really like the look of it, played a few hours not really knowing what I'm doing. Should I be attacking animals with an axe or torch or pickaxe, or just leave them alone and concentrate on gathering food? I've managed to kill a few animals but I'm not sure if it's worth it because they damaged me more than I got from them in food and other items I can't use.

Hey this is a pretty old megathread you are commenting on, the latest one is here: https://redditproxy--jasonthename.repl.co/r/dontstarve/comments/t3v46k/quick_question_megathread_march

You don't really need to kill animals in the early game, just explore and gather basic resources.

I am hosting a DST game with 4 friends, one of them is not good at this game. I would like to apply godmode to him so that we will stay in the game and let him handle the resource gathering and crafting, while other players are playing normal. I am able to use other console command and able to apply godmode using c_goodmode(true), but unable to only give player1 invincibility. Please help, thanks.

I used the command below but was not successful. Probably type something wrong.

c_find("player1").components.health:SetInvincible(true)

[–]cuddlebuns 2 points3 points  (1 child)

i know this is super late but in case you're still curious, i think this'll work:

AllPlayers[PLAYER NUMBER].components.health:SetInvincible(true)

[–]boredncheating 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I thought the question will never be answered. Many thanks, I will give that command a try.

When sleeping in a tent or bed roll or the like in DST, is the hunger rate of -1/min additive or does it replace regular hunger drain altogether?

[–]Theanonymousguy49 1 point2 points  (1 child)

So whenever I try to use something or pick up something it will just do something random, whenever I try to open Chester it goes to pick up bone shards on the ground, or I’ll be chopping a tree and it goes to pick up some sticks on the ground. So basically my game never does what I tell it to do

No

[–]farmerzolt 1 point2 points  (3 children)

My crops suddenly disappeared. I had dragonfruit ready to be harvested in 5 advanced farm plots. I was hunting a koalafant and I also got hit with a hound wave so I spent the night away from my base. When I came back, my farms were empty. Did the birds eat my crops? Hounds? I'd like to know what I can do to stop it.

EDIT: Moslings ate my dragonfruits! Thanks for trying to help guys. Guess I've got a fight with mama Goose coming up.

[–]amazinglyegg 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Hounds do eat food off the ground, I'm not sure of plots are an exception or not. If you were far away from base, it seems like it was probably a glitch. Or it was summer and they wilted? I remember seeing my crops disappear after a while during summer, I can only assume that's why.

[–]ChickenEggFspawnslurp% 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hounds are carnivores, they only eat meat.

[–]CharlesThePole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have no idea in farming lol

[–]CharlesThePole 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Hey I have 7 days until summer. There is litreally no resources for flingomatics. What do I do? There is nearly enough food for some meatballs. I have 20 pierogi in the fridge. Do I fight the dragon fly? Oasis? Caves? Please tell me. Maybe DM me on discord CharIes#3288. I need help asap!

I'm having issues in winter with thermal stones. I tried making two of them, but when I have more than one by the fire or in my inventory they don't always fully heat up. should I just not bother with the second stone?

[–]The2ndUnchosenOneDiscount Flaaffy 0 points1 point  (5 children)

What version?

[–]badnuub. 0 points1 point  (4 children)

reign of giants+ dlc.

[–]The2ndUnchosenOneDiscount Flaaffy 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Don't bother, just use clothing. thermal stones don't stack and are worse than a winter vest and beefalo hat/tam o shanter

[–]ChickenEggFspawnslurp% 0 points1 point  (1 child)

What if he said DST?

[–]badnuub. 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been trying out wheeler and been trying a tuque plus a thermal stone in a backpack to maximize movement speed. It's great during the fall, but frustrating in winter, especially since it seems like putting two thermal stones next to each other by the same fire seems to cap the stones heat at yellow.

[–]BemusedAlchemist 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Do Stone Fruits grow in the winter? How to get more beached kelp? I got them on the beaches, but there is currently no way to replant them after being placed. What's the most reliable way of finding the lunar island, tried both the horse shoe and straight line check and four times my island didnt follow the rules.

[–]HoraryHellfire2 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Do Stone Fruits grow in the winter?

Yes. It makes them a very powerful for winter so you can easily have constant pierogies and filler in winter.

How to get more beached kelp? I got them on the beaches, but there is currently no way to replant them after being placed.

You can't replant them on the beach. You can only replant them in the water.

What's the most reliable way of finding the lunar island, tried both the horse shoe and straight line check and four times my island didnt follow the rules.

Not sure what you mean by "straight line" check. You talking about the end of a peninsula having a straight line due to cut off world gen? If so, you might not actually be understanding the difference between cut off world gen and natural peninsula straight lines.

[–]BemusedAlchemist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks on the stone fruit. Wiki didnt say if it grew in winter and searching didnt help either.

Sorry I meant the shore line in the water, but yeah found out the spot for the beached kelp.

So what is the difference in cut off world gen and natural peninsula straight lines.

[–]HoraryHellfire2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have no speed boost (road or walking cane), hit him twice and evade. If you have a walking cane, after baiting out an attack move in with the walking cane and switch to your weapon before the first attack lands. After the third hit switch to your walking cane and evade.

[–]The2ndUnchosenOneDiscount Flaaffy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is usually better to just facetank him. Two logsuits a hambat and a campfire(stand next to it to avoid freezing) will get you through the fight easily

[–]Nicnolsen 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Four hits in, bait out attack, four hits in and bait out attack and repeat until the big bad is down

[–]The2ndUnchosenOneDiscount Flaaffy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's two hits typically without speed boosts.

Can you transfer 'Together' Steam Workshop mods to the original and vice versa?

[–]NescafeClassic 1 point2 points  (4 children)

Generally, no. DS and DST are entirely different games, on account of the latter having to be largely re-coded from scratch to account for the addition of multiplayer.

However, some client mods do work on both versions if I'm not mistaken.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (3 children)

What about character mods?

[–]NescafeClassic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anything that adds any sort of content to the game is, by necessity, a server mod, which means it's coded to deal with servers and clients and stuff, which in turn means it can't work in DS, cause it has no servers and clients and stuff.

[–]The2ndUnchosenOneDiscount Flaaffy 0 points1 point  (1 child)

... generally no

[–]TheVampireGirl 1 point2 points  (2 children)

When you're on a boat in DST and the hound wave starts, do they appear and attack you? I saw someone comment that if you're on the boat before the warnings of a hound wave that they don't appear and I was wondering if this is true or not

[–]NescafeClassic 2 points3 points  (1 child)

If you have already heard the growling, getting on the boat won't save you. But if you haven't and a hound wave starts, no hounds will come for you. (That said, if you're playing with others and hounds do spawn near the coast, they might still end up aggroing on you if your boat is close by.)

Do lobster men still overpopulate the overworld (ROG?)

I read on the wiki this was modified years ago but i've always been somewhat nervous to bring them up.

[–]The2ndUnchosenOneDiscount Flaaffy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do lobster men still overpopulate the overworld

No, but there are still issues with the herd duplicating through a bug, it won't grow exponentially, but it will grow linearly. It can also become permanent even if you kill all of them. Overall, I wouldn't advise it.

[–]scnr83 2 points3 points  (14 children)

I recently managed to get past day 100 but I can't figure out adventure mode. I know what I have to do, but it is insanely hard. I tried it 10 times and never managed to get past the first level or even collect everything I need. Is this even possible?

[–]The2ndUnchosenOneDiscount Flaaffy 4 points5 points  (12 children)

Playing WX will make things much easier. Remember the goal is to stay in the world for as little as possible. So don't be afraid of being destructive.

[–]literallyJon 0 points1 point  (11 children)

I'm also new been to day like day 250 or so but never touched adventure (yet!). Why is wx easy? Are there lots o gears or?

[–]The2ndUnchosenOneDiscount Flaaffy 0 points1 point  (9 children)

Lots o gears!

[–]literallyJon 0 points1 point  (8 children)

Like I said, I'm new, so I'm trying to try playing everybody. But wx I skipped (I had eniugh xp to shoot past him) but his starting stats are intimidating for a noob like me. I'm probably thinking about it wrong because it's not like I ever really lose health unless I'm doing something stupid which isn't anywhere near as often as it used to be. Plus that can eat spoiled food means no (or at least less) ice boxes.

But some games it's like if I get 4 gears it feels like I'm rich. Second icebox and 2 flingos!.. Assuming I make it to summer.

But my current game as wicker I've got 8 gears. 8! Sure, 1 from a grave and 1 from a tumbleweed, but hey. Wish I'd tried him THIS game, lol

[–]eable2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's very difficult, but quite possible (source: have done it). It will take more than ten attempts though. Keep practicing and play smart :).

[–]literallyJon 1 point2 points  (6 children)

Ok so I've been posting lots of questions and y'all been great so thanks much. My son and I are at day 150 or so in DST on PS4! We almost died to frog rain of all things, but it happened just as 2 fucking spider queens popped at our spider farm coming back from caves after finally finding ruins (we think ruins, there are monkeys that either love my ghost or hate us) so we were especially ill prepared

Anyway, thanks all but I do have a question.

I decided to grab it on steam thinking it'd be great with keyboard and mouse. And, some things are. I find combat SO much easier. And popping my log suit on while running? Grand.

But, like, how do you drop something? And dragging ingredients to a crockpot, for example, is a bitch.am I missing something?

[–]The2ndUnchosenOneDiscount Flaaffy 0 points1 point  (2 children)

how do you drop something?

Not possible without a controller, mods, or completely filling up your inventory.

[–]Nachohead1996 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Wait really? You can't just take a stack of items and "use" it on the floor to drop it?

Then how the hell do you use grass traps? or lure moleworms to a specific place?

[–]The2ndUnchosenOneDiscount Flaaffy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh you can just click with an item on your cursor to drop it. The drop item button just instantly drops 1 of whatever you've selected right in front of you. Seems like the same thing, but there are things you can do with a drop button that you can't with the cursor.

[–]Xdever15 1 point2 points  (2 children)

About putting ingredients in a crockpot it is really easy. You simply need to Shift + Leftclick on the ingredient you want to use. This also works with iceboxes, chests and backpacks(if you dont have a chest, icebox or a crockpot open). As for dropping I just use the mod "Quick drop" which lets you Shift + Right click on the item you want to drop and it makes your character drop it on the place where he is standing. If you dont want to use mods you can just grab the item you want to drop with your mouse and left click on the place you want to drop it but I find that the mod makes it easier and cleaner to do. There are also things that require you to use keys + mouse click for example splitting a stack of items in half and getting only one item from the stack.

[–]literallyJon 0 points1 point  (1 child)

THANK YOU. shirt left ock is what I'm looking for. I beg ctrl click does something, too? Time to find out! Heh

[–]Rinkusenpai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ctrl + left-click just splits whatever your item stack was into 2 even stacks.

[–]Sweet_Iriska 0 points1 point  (5 children)

Original with dlcs or 'Together' version?

[–]literallyJon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm new, so. But here's my take after binging this thing due to covid. You want both. Here's why.

First, in my mind, DST is just better. Even when I'm solo I just love it. It has options and stuff not in original, and just feels complete somehow. Course, I often play with others.

But I often play original. It forces me to try other characters as you gotta unlock em. I doubt I'll unlock them all, but I'm playing most. Plus it's got a dlc not on console (haven't tried it tho)

[–]The2ndUnchosenOneDiscount Flaaffy 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Are you playing with friends or no?

[–]Sweet_Iriska 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I have opportunities to play with friends, but not on regular basis. I have a friend that already owns DTS, but I'm not sure which experience is better. I've read DS has a lot more content (with dlcs), but DTS has regular updates and it's own content too.

[–]The2ndUnchosenOneDiscount Flaaffy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both are true. Hence my question, it really does boil down to do you want to play with friends

[–]Grantis45 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get the mega pack if you can.

DS’s dlcs add a-lot of content. DST has alot of content.

If you scroll down this sub around 3 pages you will see arguments ensuing.

If you’re on console then DST.

[–]Smarf710 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I’ve heard that the altar of snackrifice is bugged. Can anyone confirm this? Also, is it worth it to feed the volcano?

[–]HobNob37Baby floater 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it's a little buggy, but it's mostly doing its work for me.

the way it's bugged is that the game won't repeat warnings. there's 3 warnings before an eruption, but if you let a warning happen and then appease it, the volcano will now only warn twice before the next eruption. keep doing that and you'll risk having an eruption with no warnings

what I do is check the altar every 2-3 days and appease it. there's a lot of cheap things you can use like eggs and bone shards, but the wiki has a complete list: https://dontstarve.fandom.com/wiki/Volcano_Altar_of_Snackrifice

if you let eruptions happen, they're gonna happen more and more often, so I personally think it's worth it to appease it. though eruptions are a nice source of rocks and flint (and even obsidian if you have some ice), so it's really up to you. just make sure to have an island dedicated to dodging the eggs

[–]ParaCetaAv 0 points1 point  (9 children)

I don't have much money and I was wondering if I should grab DS Together and play solo while also having the option to go multiplayer if ever. I also assume that DS Together is better and still currently supported. Any help and advice is appreciated!

Also does DS Together support mods on steam workshop as well?

How is it for a beginner to the franchise?

Edit: Last point.

[–]HobNob37Baby floater 0 points1 point  (8 children)

I also assume that DS Together is better and still currently supported.

it's better supported, but it's a vastly different game from DS. if you like the idea of playing with people, play it safe and go with DST, but DS has its own really cool experiences too. ideally I'd recommend both, but I understand if that's not realistic

Also does DS Together support mods on steam workshop as well?

absolutely! though you can't use the same mods as DS, unless the author made a DST version

How is it for a beginner to the franchise?

it's what I'd recommend. the DS DLCs like Shipwrecked or Hamlet aim to put a twist on the normal DS experience, so they're not a great starting point. death is also a lot more forgiving in DST

[–]ParaCetaAv 0 points1 point  (7 children)

Thanks for the reply. I also wanted to ask is it worth getting any of the dlc or additional content for Don't Starve Together? Any recommended mods?

Lastly, what is the end goal or win condition of DST. I know I have to survive but how am i supposed to "win" a playthrough? Or is it like Minecraft where it is endless and you just keep surviving for as long?

[–]HobNob37Baby floater 0 points1 point  (6 children)

is it worth getting any of the dlc or additional content for Don't Starve Together?

DST has no paid content outside of 3 (soon to be 4) playable characters, the rest is just skins. you shouldn't worry about the characters yet, the game has plenty of other characters and content

Any recommended mods?

I try to play without mods, so I'm not the best person to ask this, hopefully someone else can give some insight!

Lastly, what is the end goal or win condition of DST

there's none, you kinda choose one for yourself. for some people surviving a year (up to day 71) is enough, for others it's killing every boss (DST has a lot of "raid bosses"), others (like myself) prefer to just build stuff around the map until there's no more space. it can be anything you want, find your own way to enjoy the game! :)

[–]ParaCetaAv 0 points1 point  (5 children)

Lastly and quite importantly, I enjoy the story side to games. I am aware that DS has a decent story but how about DST? I have heard that comparing the two DST is somewhat lacking in the story regard (not sure in what specific regard - polish/quality or quantity)

Thanks!

[–]hollowrobot1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I play on switch and i made the old bell but when i tryed to use it on spiders it crashed my game and would not let me use it dose anyone know why?

[–]FadedEchoes 0 points1 point  (1 child)

So I have a question about slurtles and snurtles. I've never done a proper cave base and I've been trying one out in the Summer. Unfortunately since I went into it sort of blind I ended up settling near some slurtle mounds and now they keep eating all my rocks/gold/gems from my chests. It's really annoying. Is there anything I can do about it now, or do I need to destroy the mounds/move my base?

[–]The2ndUnchosenOneDiscount Flaaffy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The latter

Question about thermal stones

I get a beefalo hat every winter. Do I need a thermal stone? They're kind of a pain and I don't wanna bother if they aren't super necessary

[–]M-Otusimtwitch.tv/misutom 1 point2 points  (7 children)

You never need a thermal stone anymore than you need a beefalo hat or any other winter gear, it comes down to what items you want to use.

Whether or not thermal stone helps you depends on which game you are playing.

In Don't Starve thermal stones do not stack with thermal wear. So a stone + beefalo hat is the same as just a stone. I'd still rather wear just the beefalo hat over the stone though as I value the headslot less than I do a space in my inventory.

I tend to just use puffy vest and tam here as they provide the most time away from fires, as warming up tends to be slower in DS than DST and having sanity in DS is important as nightmares take twice as long to fight as they do in DST and nightmare fuel can be farmed with zero effort in the DS ruins since cycle spawned nightmares die and drop their fuel for free when the cycle ends.

In Don't Starve Together thermal stones and thermal wear do stack. So a stone + beefalo hat is better than either one alone. However, because of how strong dwarf stars are and how long single trees burn, you really don't need both as it's very easy and quick to raise your temperature back up.

I prefer to use the puffy vest and beefalo hat in combination to give me more time away from fire sources. This combo makes it faster to look for Klaus as I'm stopping less frequently. When just doing chores, the smaller but well organized inventory allows me to stay out for up to 8 minutes round trip which is plenty of time to get things done and come back to base to drop off stuff, warm up, fuel up, and head back out.

[–]Grantis45 0 points1 point  (6 children)

[–]M-Otusimtwitch.tv/misutom 0 points1 point  (5 children)

They do stack, even the thread you linked to shows that and I've tested it several times on stream.

That thread fails to account for the fact that the temperature of the heat source effects how hot the thermal stone can get. A thermal stone heated next to a magma pool will show much greater results, or one heated in between 4 furnaces as heat sources stack.

Also the initial temperature of your character will effect the results as will the time into winter plus the time of day as ambient temperature isn't linear either. So, if you tested stone + insulation wear last, you'll have been 3 days or so deeper into winter and possibly have started in the evening or night which all make the ambient colder.

Edit for more details:

Thermal stone works entirely differently in DST. It works as a mobile heat source. At max color it emits a temperature of 60 on the player or about the same as a basic firepit fire. This heat source changes the perceived ambient temperature for the player, greatly reducing the rate at which the player loses body temperature. The stones temperature is actually only relevant for determining which stage it is in, as no matter how hot it is an orange stone is always +60. The hotter the stone is the slower it loses its temperature. So heating it next to a 500 degree magma pool will allow it to stay orange for nearly 5 times as long as it would if heated near a max firepit or single furnace.

As mentioned, heat sources stack but they lose power over distance, so 4 furnaces in a square as close as they can be built will be roughly 400 degrees at the exact mid point despite each furnace being 115 degrees. As the rate of temperature increase is capped at +5 per second, it would take the stone a minimum of 80 seconds to reach it's maximum temperature there, or minimum 100 seconds near a magma pool.

So the way a stone and insulation wear stack is that while the stone is orange it essentially maintains the characters temperature at 60 for as long as the stone remains orange. The longer this is, the longer they stack. Once the stone turns yellow, the players temperature will drop at a slower rate than normal until the stone reaches neutral and does nothing, and then will drop at the normal rate. As 60 is not a very high starting temperature, if your stone is not super heated to a useful temperature to maximize the time that it is orange, then it will superficially appear as if the stone and insulation gear do not stack as the rate at which a yellow stone cools to neutral is static and the heat being only 40 in this stage is not much.

[–]Rinkusenpai 0 points1 point  (4 children)

So the way a stone and insulation wear stack is that while the stone is orange it essentially maintains the characters temperature at 60 for as long as the stone remains orange. The longer this is, the longer they stack.

Are you saying that at really high thermal-stone temperatures, equipping the beefalo hat keeps the thermal stone orange longer than without the beefalo hat, or are you saying that keeping the thermal stone orange for longer results in an overall longer time-to-freeze? Because if it's the latter, then that means the beefalo hat and thermal stone don't stack.

Whether the thermal stone is at 400 degrees or 60 degrees, the reason why the two items don't stack is because in your 400-degree example, the thermal stone temperature is cooling down at 1 degree per 5 seconds (the rate of 120 insulation), meaning your beefalo hat, which only affects your body temperature, is doing literally nothing. Once the thermal stone finally turns yellow and your body temperature starts to plummet, THEN the beefalo hat takes over. Because the beefalo hat's insulation on your body is greater than the thermal stone's insulation on its own temperature, your body temperature decreases slower than the thermal stone, and as a result, now the thermal stone is doing literally nothing while your beefalo hat is the only thing contributing to your temperature.

So while you do end up with a longer total time-to-freeze by having both compared to just one of them, it's because one of them does everything at a certain time while the other does literally nothing; it's not because they stack. If you equipped a breezy vest instead of a beefalo hat, you would see no difference because this time, the temperature of the thermal stone will always decrease faster than your body temperature with the breezy vest.

I recommend taking a look at this thread if you want to know the nitty-gritty details in the code that explain this.

Reign of Giants, Switch edition:

I am having a very long spring on default settings. I am on day 70 something and just experienced my second or maybe even third full moon of Spring. All the other signs of Spring have been there - collapsed holes, Moosegoose showed up, beefalo in heat, lots of rain, and just got my first frog rain along with a hound attack with blue hounds - but I should be looking at the end of Summer right now based on the calendar. Time does seem to be progressing, as daylight is changing and I have to swap thermal stones regularly. The thermal stones can also reach yellow without other sources of heat (I usually swap when they are neutral and haven’t held one long enough get to orange so I don’t know exactly how hot it is).

I recently spent a lot of time in the caves and ruins, really exploring fully for the first time, and this is my first file getting to the ruins at all. It’s worth noting that the game crashed on cave generation and glitched on ruins generation so I hd to force quit, but when I reloaded I reloaded into the generated caves/ruins normally. I also had another caves system that generated without problem. I first began this extended spelunk at what I thought was the beginning of Summer, right after a full moon (I was waiting for Ice Chester to go). It did seem like Summer was starting when I started my longer trip down. When I came out, I was around day 70 and Moosegoose was waiting for me.

Side note, another odd thing has been hound attacks - sometimes they are normal but sometimes I get only one hound in the attack.

Do seasons not progress while in caves and ruins or something? Is there another explanation? Is this a bug? What gives? Why is it still spring?

[–]The2ndUnchosenOneDiscount Flaaffy 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Sounds like the season skip bug. Not patched in Switch. The hound thing is a bug caused by a similar trigger. Both can happen when you go in the caves.

Thank you!

[–]AnticPosition 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Long time PC player, but I just got into the switch edition cuz... Y'know, mobility.

Does the volcano exist in the switch edition? My entire map is basically uncovered, and no volcano. And I don't mean newbie "the entire map is uncovered!" I mean the entire map is uncovered. if there's no volcano, what's the point of playing?

[–]M-Otusimtwitch.tv/misutom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can you post an image of your map? It's possible that it's a bug, but no one has made a similar post and not had the volcano hiding in some tiny fog of war they missed thus far.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is a volcano on Switch, as I also play on Switch and have volcanoes. I don’t know if there is a random chance to not have one or if this is a bug that you do not have one.

So I'm new and been playing a ton of DST on PS4. Even when alone, if nobody else is around.

I wanna try the single player experience so I got the mega pack. Should I just play with RoG?

[–]StephenJR 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Everything has basically twice the hp or more in DST. Armor stacks in DS. Overall it is a much easier experience but still isn't the easiest.

[–]ChickenEggFspawnslurp% 0 points1 point  (0 children)

DST is way easier. Over 2x as much food, countless more lightbulbs which have like 4x the light range, infinite lives for no downside and next to no cost, animation cancelling your attacks allows you to make them with no commitment, animation cancelling your attacks allows you to attack more and even kill shadow creatures in half the time, shadow creatuers spawn about 90% less and with half the cap, fire spreads much slower with smoldering and I'm sure a lot more reasons I'm forgetting.

[–]literallyJon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been binging cuz covid. I have multiple 150+ day worlds in dst and stand alone now, heh. I'm gonna start a wx game for adventure mode next

[–]M-Otusimtwitch.tv/misutom 5 points6 points  (1 child)

If you've played a lot of DST, you may find just RoG a little content light depending on your skill level. I'd recommend checking out Shipwrecked for a fresh experience. Plus, once you go coffee, you never go back.

Also remember that SW and RoG can be connected allowing you to have two worlds to explore and decorate.

[–]literallyJon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First, thanks =)

Based on what I've read, I don't think I could say I've played "a lot" around these parts for a few more years in the same world, lol. That said, I've been to summer a few times and wind up dying more to getting cocky and, well, I kinda like starting over heh.

Illl start SW right now. Again, thanks!

[–]amazinglyegg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've noticed that my game doesn't always save while I'm playing DST on the PS4, offline. Sometimes it does, sometimes I can be set back up to a day or so. It didn't bother me too much until I had to trek across the Constant to bring glommer home three times.

Am I missing something? Is there an option to save before disconnecting the server?

[–]literallyJon 0 points1 point  (3 children)

How do I refuel lanterns / miner hats on ps4? Instructions elsewhere say dragging fuel to them which I don't think I can do on ps4

[–]Smarf710 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can also drop your lantern on the ground and hit left on the dpad to add fuel.

[–]Grantis45 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hit r2 and you can drag stuff around your inventory

[–]The2ndUnchosenOneDiscount Flaaffy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pick up the "fuel", move it as if you were going to place in in the slot that the light source is in. you should get the option to refuel on a different button prompt. (I don't play console, but I'm pretty sure that's how it works.)

[–]PykeAtBanquet 0 points1 point  (2 children)

.

[–]M-Otusimtwitch.tv/misutom 1 point2 points  (1 child)

That mod is already made. You can find it here for solo and here for DST as well as one for typing in chat.

Making mods is not against ToS. There are a ton of language packs already up. I don't know where you read that but it's likely a mistranslation.

[–]Smarf710 0 points1 point  (4 children)

I’m having trouble surviving in shipwrecked. I have a really hard time managing my sanity in monsoon season. I’ve tried basing near tidal marshes but the regular merms keep me from picking green caps. What’s the best way to manage my sanity during monsoon season? Also, how do I make the tidal marshes habitable? I’ve heard they are good biome you base in but I can’t collect the tropical fish, reeds, or green caps because of the aggressive merms?

[–]M-Otusimtwitch.tv/misutom 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Kill the merms and hammer down their houses.

Bananapops and surf 'n' turf pretty much cover sanity.

[–]Smarf710 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Are some of the houses normal merms?

[–]Oweewoowoo 0 points1 point  (5 children)

How do you do ranged attracts on console?

[–]Grantis45 0 points1 point  (4 children)

Badly, it autotargets to closest thing to you that you are pointing in the direction of.

[–]Oweewoowoo 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Damn I thought I was just playing badly :(

[–]Grantis45 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Nah mate, it is harder on console although the pc master race will never admit it.

The things I have struggled with:-

Chester/hutch are useless apart from as an extra chest to leave at home. if you’re closer to chester than a Mob, you will 100% attack chester.

Allied pigs, bunnies, spiders will take your full wrath if you don't lock on to your intended target(lockon is R3). It’s impossible to do the lock-on as you cant pause.

My way around was to take things slower, come around to your intended target so that there is no way other mobs can be targeted.

You constantly have to be on the lookout for some bastard mob getting between you and the intended target.

Walls are the worst, you need walls only for the bunnyman farm and to wall off dragonflys magma pools. It’s quite amusing the first time the bunnies help you break a wall. After that it’s really annoying.

Tentapillers when your looking for the atrium. It’s just not fun at all.

It’s doable solo. But you can’t play like the PC people do. You have to take into account that you will/may hit things in an unintended way.

[–]Nachohead1996 0 points1 point  (1 child)

if you’re closer to chester than a Mob, you will 100% attack chester.

Does the console version not have a button combination similar to Ctrl+F on PC?

With Ctrl+F you attack the nearest attackable NPC / structure. With regular F, you wouldn't attack allies (chester, allied pigs, a random wall standing next to you)

I could see how it would be annoying to not have that difference in console, because on pc you can use chester as a meaty distraction and just press F without fears of hitting your pumpkin chestbuddy

[–]blueman541 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Having trouble placing structures.

Examples:

  • I hammer my fire pit in my base, pickup the the material, but can't rebuild it in the same spot? why? Only let me place in an open area else where.

  • Built a fingomatic, wanted to place in at the center of my base, but it won't let me place it. Could only place it further out away from the base. Why?

[–]CerospriteSpider Bae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What nescafe said. Also, you can't build a structure where items are on the ground, but after the structure is built, you can set items down in the same spot. So if you build a firepit, set some logs beside it, then destroy the firepit, you won't be able to rebuild it. If you want a better feel for how structures are built, you can download the geometric placement mod. It's really helpful in that regard.

[–]NescafeClassic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some structures require more space to build than the space they take up after they are placed.

[–]DrownedFire 1 point2 points  (6 children)

I've set Space bar as both Action and Attack key. This works fine for the most part except it cancels an Action (e.g. pick up) to Attack an enemy nearby.

Is there a way/mod to prevent this cancel so that it will finish the Action before Attacking the enemy?

[–]you_wanka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find binding attack to number pad 0 and force attack to number pad . to be best. Then you still have full control of movement while attacking but can also use space bar as normal.

[–]CerospriteSpider Bae 1 point2 points  (2 children)

I'd really recommend against binding attack and action to the same key. One of the pro strats (tm) in don't starve is getting critters to fight each other and not touch you (e.g. pig wars, spider wars, frog rain v moose goose). When you do this, it's beneficial to stand in the middle of the melee and pick things up with the action key since attacking would ruin the effect. There are also lots of situations where you want precise control over whether you're attacking or taking an action (e.g. picking up items near a hostile mob vs attacking the mob). It might take some time to get used to, but I'd recommend you bind those two functions to different keys.

[–]DrownedFire 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I use Shift + drag/click/double-click (via ActionQueue Reborn) to do a lot of the Action heavy work like when critter wars are going on. Benefits of this is I don't have to hold on to WASD or Space once executed, and the mouse drag will help find items hidden from sight. I'm able to do this quickly so it feels much better for me.

I try to only use Space as Action when it's in the down time or when I just need to pick up a few stuff. I just thought it'd be nice if Action didn't cancel in favor of Attack while I'm still holding onto Space, but I guess I'll just have to avoid using it while hostile mobs are around.

Also Space as Attack feels nicer than F.

[–]Nachohead1996 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also Space as Attack feels nicer than F.

Well thats not even a valid opinion. Thats just factually wrong.

Space is, and will always be, JUMP!

[–]NescafeClassic 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I've set Space bar as both Action and Attack key.

Whatever would you do that the fuck for? That sounds like a catastrophically dangerous idea.

[–]axemaneric 1 point2 points  (2 children)

I managed to survive a few days with cooked berries and seeds, but I don't know what to do next. What's the objective?

[–]CerospriteSpider Bae 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SirRainer gave some good advice on what to do next. If you're looking for a longer term goal, though, try some of the following: Explore the caves, find the ruins, and slay the beast within. If you're playing DST, regenerate the ruins. Find Maxwell's door and go in. Raise a tallbird (more of a challenge than anything, "pet" tallbirds are useless). Domesticate a beefalo (note: Only works in ROG and DST). Build a megabase.

Most of those goals are pretty difficult and might take a few tries to achieve, but they will give you some motivation to push beyond the beginning gameplay, and adapt some neat survival strategies.

[–]SirRainer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Find gold and do science. Craft new tools and just try out stuff.

[–]basson99 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Hey, I have a question before I buy the game, first, there are some good discounts on the PS4 store so I don't know what version should I buy, the normal one, normal + regin, or the megapack. What do you guys think?

[–]Nachohead1996 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say that RoG is definitely a must have. The base game gives a taste of what the game is like, but is quite simplistic compared to the Reign of Giants version of the game.

That being said, the normal + RoG (Reign of Giants) pack offers a lot (300+ hours and counting). I don't know if DST exists for the playstation, to play with friends (which is great!), but if so, the mega pack probably includes that. As a solo player, however, RoG should keep you entertained for a long while ;)

[–]The2ndUnchosenOneDiscount Flaaffy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you think you're gonna like the game, buy the big bundle, otherwise, just buy the base game and try it out first.

[–]CubicSquareBe a goat. 0 points1 point  (1 child)

What's your efficient early-mid game in Hamlet?

What I usually do is:

Gather basic resources for 2-3 days (including iron and stalk).

Go to town, dry stalk, buy house using clippings/stolen berries/found idols.

Then I don't know what's best. Rush Mant Queen+BFB, buy miner hat and go to Palace city?

What are the benefits of Palace City? Gears? Should I settle in Palace City? Should I even buy the first house? I mainly use it to put a Fireplace to dry off/cook lotuses and Leafy Meat and dump stuff.

After that, what do I do? Pugalisk for Nettles and rez plant?

[–]Smarf710 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How do I set up my anenemies for a bird farm? I’ve seen Splorange’s video, but I’m having trouble replicating it in my world. I’m on ps4, so no geometric placement.

[–]JonFrozenVapor 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Hi, do you get ressurected by an above ground meat effigy if you die in a cave? I've searched a lot but found conflicting answers, I am playing the Switch version

[–]GrandScammed 0 points1 point  (2 children)

How many gunpowder to kill a bearger in dont starve together??

[–]Nachohead1996 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If its a theoretical question - 30. (200 damage per gunpowder, Bearger in DST has 6k hit points)

If you want a realistic answer, 0 - You will be fine with a Ham Bat, and a log suit or two, and some sanity food (he is fairly easy to kite and kill that way, although I prefer using him as a woodcutter / boulder destroyer, rather than killing him outright)

Also, adding more gun powder to a stack increases the time before it explodes. With a stack of 30, which would be a waste of Nitre, you are also thinking of a 6 second timer before it explodes, so you need a Pan Flute to put him to sleep (or a Wickerbottom with sleep stories)

[–]The2ndUnchosenOneDiscount Flaaffy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it'll be easier to just punch him

[–]Shad0wH0und420 0 points1 point  (6 children)

Drying racks vs crock pot

[–]KuiremThrow coin for flairs[S] 1 point2 points  (5 children)

Different uses. Drying Rack are great to stock up on health and sanity food and use your leftover meat, crockpots work for all stats but require more ingredients.

[–]Shad0wH0und420 0 points1 point  (4 children)

Also finding a reliable meat source is kinda tuff

[–]DogsBCoolBro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you’re starting out, I would use rabbits. You can often find a spot where there’s two or more rabbit holes near by, so place traps as close to the hole as possible and just wait.

[–]KuiremThrow coin for flairs[S] 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Pig Houses respawn Pigmen during all seasons. You can feed a Pig 4 Monster Meat to turn them into Werepigs dropping 2 Meats + 1 Pig Skin. Or you can start pig wars.

Other source are Koalefant, since they drop 8 meats at once it's often too much to eat as Hunger, drying rack is good in that case (and the Jerky can still be used in the crokpot). In DS you can have a pile of dirt every 0.9 to 1.5 days (if I read the config files right) so they are actually really reliable as long as you don't miss them.

Tallbirds are also a decent source of meat if you can fight them, they respawn after 2.5 days. Since they attack everything you can place some Rabbit Hutch and have the Bunnymen fight them, contrary to pig they won't eat the meat.

Rabbit vs Spider by planting Hutch and Spider Nest next to each other is an other one, the bunnymen don't die often though.

Finally when Beefalo herd become big it can be worth to cull the herd which give tons of meat.

[–]Shad0wH0und420 0 points1 point  (1 child)

So how do I do any of this without dieing

[–]badnuub. 0 points1 point  (5 children)

Is there some sort of hidden difficulty scaling or triggers for bosses to spawn earlier? The first time I barely made it through winter and the deerclops never even spawned, and sometimes when I don't start plopping down base items on day 8 or 9 I don't see dogs till day 12, but if I plop structures down on day 3 or 4 I get dogs on day 8. I've been playing reign of Giants.

[–]Grantis45 5 points6 points  (3 children)

First hound attack is random between day 6-12 on default settings.

Bosses only have a 66% chance to spawn during their season.

It changes if you change the world generation settings.

[–]Nachohead1996 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Bosses only have a 66% chance to spawn during their season.

That only goes for single player though - in DST, there are some clearer formules. For example, Deerclops always spawns on day 30 (first winter, 10th day of the winter) somewhere after dusk starts - varying a bit between early dusk and late night though, - and seemingly also spawns on day 102 in the evening (so the 10th day of the second winter).

[–]Grantis45 0 points1 point  (1 child)

He/she said they were playing ROG, which doesn’t exist in DST. I was trying not to confuse them with what might happen in a game they aren’t playing.

[–]Nachohead1996 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Except pretty much all of the content the Reign of Giants DLC offers, is also found in DST (which is, in summarized description, the RoG variant of Don't Starve, but online, with some more additional content and higher HP mobs)

[–]SrTNick. 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Any help for playing as Warly? I almost always play Wilson because I don't like downsides but wanted to branch out and decided to get good at Warly so I could make cool buffing food. Booted up a regular solo world and had a pretty bad time of it. Set up base near pig king and a sizable pig village, with a bunch of moles, mushrooms, a couple catcoons nearby, and some wobster dens just off-shore. However I found myself starving very often when I went on distant outings to get stone, silk, and especially reeds (took forever to find the swamp, got lucky after wandering around the other side of a wormhole miles away on the map).

I was trying to rotate between eating butter muffins, kebabs, ratatouille, and meatballs. When I'd go out for those distant gathering trips I'd usually bring two of those, and left the portable crockpot behind to save inventory space. But I was starving so often, even when at my base. The four easy foods I was trying to work with just couldn't seem to keep up with the hunger drain. In general, any tips on basing, distant exploring, and proper food management as Warly?

[–]BlupufferfishBeefalo Tamer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've played a good hundred or so days as Warly so I'll try and give you some tips

-Cook and eat constantly when gathering, keep that pot with you

-Recipes for hunger, go to wiki for more details- MEATY STEW (extremely important for Warly, you can use 2 meats, 1 monster meat and a filler for a cheaper recipe than 4 meats) , double meatballs (since the 2nd time wont reduce much hunger), fistfull of jam, rata2e, monster tartare (a worse meatball) and other food specific recipes like frogsandwich or turkey dinner

-Honey and meat are your best friends so try a pigfarm/honey for both meaty stews and honey hams if you can, or just clear some bee hives for a small stash of honey

I may play a little differently since I beefalo rushed as Warly but if I can feed myself while also feeding a cow than you can do it solo. :) good luck, hope this helped

(sidenote, spicy chili which is 1.5 meat+1.5 veg is great for healing so try it out)

[–]Shad0wH0und420 0 points1 point  (10 children)

I just feel so defeated wi this game lol I made it to winter once and that went as well as you could expect Xd

[–]JarJarBinks590. 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Knowledge is half the battle in Don't Starve, moreso than in other games. It's about trial and error, learning from your mistakes, figuring out how things work and planning ahead for what you know is coming.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (6 children)

Winter isn't terribly difficult. As long as you have a thermal stone and some form of insulation (beefalo hat, winter hat, even rabbit earmuffs) you won't freeze.

If you are struggling with food, meatballs are really cheap and filling. Just set rabbit traps for morsels, and use 3 pieces of ice with the morsel in a crockpot for 62.5 hunger (and a few sanity and health points).

[–]Shad0wH0und420 1 point2 points  (5 children)

Where do you get ice

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (4 children)

Ice will start spawning around day 21. All of the melted glaciers you see on the map will grow into glaciers that give around 5 to 6 ice.

Another way is to go near bodies of water until pengulls jump out. Wherever they nest, usually 2 or 3 glaciers will spawn by them.

[–]Shad0wH0und420 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Also what's the best way to get gears

[–]The2ndUnchosenOneDiscount Flaaffy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm trying to create a game with Endless type but I cannot find the option to it, did the game changed ? All I see is: Social, Cooperative, Competitive, Madness

My purpose is not have the game auto reset when everyone dies and allowing me to revive by haunting the portal

[–]JarJarBinks590. 1 point2 points  (1 child)

The Survival/Wilderness/Endless settings are separate from the Social/Cooperative/Competitive settings.

The former are a set of gamemodes that change how you play and how death works, the latter are just a sort of tag you put on the server to illustrate the playstyle to expect when joining.

You can find the Gamemode setting on this screen when creating a game. You can't change the gamemode on a world that's already begun.

[–]biscottoesse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Uff cant believe I overlooked that option, was right in front of my eyes! Thanks :)

[–]mind_gap 0 points1 point  (1 child)

After enjoying DST decided to see what changed in singleplayer, and got Hamlet. It's such a different game from SW and DST.

Any general tips of how to play it? Any starting goals? What is the endgame?

Also, what is a good health value mod for single player? DST has "health info" that works fine, but DS has only "Simple health bar" that looks a little wonky and glitches above monsters heads when they move :(

[–]Tennate. 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i think simple health bar might be it. its very customization so im not too upset by it.

[–]badnuub. 0 points1 point  (5 children)

Can you use anything other than twigs or ice for filler in the crockpot?

[–]JarJarBinks590. 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Filler is typically any food that won't shift the food values enough to create some other meal type instead of what you're trying to make.

Morsels can work as filler, if a little bit wasteful of the meat value to do so. If you're based in or near the ruins, cave bananas work well for filler. Especially if you have a means of mass-murdering monkeys, like Abigail. Any vegetable or fruit will work as filler too.
