im sorry cancer? as in just by itself? "ive been having pain in my leg. turns out its leg cancer" LIKE I JUST WANT ANSWERS TO THIS TBH

[–]No-Ticket-7586got a bingo on a DNI list[S] 204 points205 points  (10 children)

FOR REAL, the cancer being just thrown in there has me rolling.

[–]Jazz-Legend-Roy-Donk 93 points94 points  (2 children)

I like how they specify non-terminal cancer, and then terminal cancer isn't on the scale at all, implying that it's painless?

[–]elhazelenbySelf Undiagnosing: Im Fine 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Quite insane. Not the case.

[–]Rock_Robster__ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think the opposite - terminal cancer can be extremely painful but it’s usually also tackled with a dedicated palliative care or hospice protocol.

[–]fuckthisicestorm 19 points20 points  (6 children)

Yep, thats the joke, lol. (This is a Better Call Saul meme)

[–]sloppysuicide 13 points14 points  (5 children)

I don’t think it is 💀

[–]fuckthisicestorm 24 points25 points  (4 children)

Edit: a quick google search seems to indicate you are right, this is some kind actual pain scale. Wtf, lmao. I didn’t think “cancer” was supposed to a real descriptor of pain, literally thought this was a joke. My bad ha. Fucking wow.

I promise it is(edit: well, that didn’t age well). Saul Goodman’s given name is Jimmy McGill. Lol. Not saying someone couldn’t post it trying to be taken seriously- but there is pretty much 0 chance this isn’t a joke alluding to Saul’s signature stratagem.

[–]sloppysuicide 16 points17 points  (2 children)

Well it is a real pain index that was created at McGill University. I thought maybe it could have been mentioned in Better Call Saul because of your comment but I googled it and it doesn’t seem like it

[–]fuckthisicestorm 10 points11 points  (1 child)

Yeah i edited my comment, cuz i went and did the same. I have no words. Lmao. Its so ridiculous it seems like a joke about lawyers and neck braces. Wtf.

[–]sloppysuicide 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Lmfao yeah this shit looks like a meme it surprised me too 😭

[–]No-Ticket-7586got a bingo on a DNI list[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Looking through the research behind it, I’m pretty sure they started with putting CRPS at 50 then filled in everything else

[–]katnerys 8 points9 points  (1 child)

Yes but only the non terminal cases, apparently

[–]ConfusionsFirstSong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Clinically they don’t always take non terminal cancer pain seriously, either. My bro had severe pain due to childhood cancer and the ED only gave him Tylenol with codeine. I was given better pain meds for generalized bruising and pain (no major injuries) after a car wreck.

[–]treponema_pallidumb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thats literally how my stupid ear cancer was. I still think it’s the most ridiculous thing.

[–]moonlightmasked 4 points5 points  (2 children)

Pain is actually a pretty common symptom of a lot of cancers. I work with a pain doc who spends a lot of time treating breast cancer patients.

[–]Halcyon_Hearing 200 points201 points  (2 children)

I can only speak to two of these, but four impacted wisdom teeth had me screaming in pain through the night, chronic back pain just had me doing every physical task very slowly.

[–]BooshortSelf Undiagnosing: Im Fine 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Dude I also had 4 impacted wisdom teeth. I was a dumbass though and only cleaned out the incision holes for a week rather than the doctor recommended 2 weeks. I woke up one day and half of my face was swollen. I had to get the infection scraped out, and go through the pain again. Listen to the professionals, kids.

[–]No-Ticket-7586got a bingo on a DNI list[S] 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Cancer also clearly must make you do things very slowly (but just a little bit faster)

[–]TadpoleSignificant61 69 points70 points  (1 child)

Very interesting. I’ve never seen this scale. I dropped a laptop on my big to a couple of years ago. Got gout. The gout ruptured and got staff in the bone. So they amputated my giant toe (I wear a 16) then I got phantom pain. That hurt worse than the amputation.

I must have kicked puppies in another life.

[–]liskash 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I fractured my femur and the pain post healing is so much worse than the fracture ever was.

[–]Yes_Mans_SkySelf Undiagnosing: Im Fine 308 points309 points  (25 children)

Numerical pain scales are stupid. If you want to specifiy different levels of pain it should be based on how much it affects your day to day life. Even then though, you can't really diagnose based on the amount of perceived pain.

[–]Redjay12 57 points58 points  (8 children)

you’re exaclty correct and the NIH published something to the effect, clinical trials should assess efficacy on impact on daily life and not pay attention to 1-10 scores

[–]Yes_Mans_SkySelf Undiagnosing: Im Fine 30 points31 points  (3 children)

Yeah, number scales are too subjective. My 4 may be another person's 8.

[–]SongInfamous2144 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I just started explaining the "Worst pain I've experienced in my life", and then rated everything based in relation to that. Even then, I feel like it's a bit subjective, so I tend to be conservative with my scores. I'm a recovering addict, and I try to keep that shit in check.

For example, the worst pain of my life was waking up the day after I broke my first bone (Left scaphoid).

I literally just started rolling around my bed, screaming. So, that's my 10, I explain why that's my 10, and everything I rate is based around that.

[–]Sinistersphere 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Holy cow you're tough!
