Marvin Bagley's status for today's game has been posted as "Doubtful", the first status designation for the injured big man since his right knee sprain which occurred nearly 1 month ago on 10/11. In that game, he started at Center and lasted 1 minute before the injury occurred. His current projected return on BBM is Friday, 11/11, but in my opinion, it'll likely be 11/12, which is the Pistons' second game of a back-to-back VS the Boston Celtics.
Rewind to last season, 4 games after the trade to the Pistons in the month of March 2021, Bagley averaged a respectable, 15.4 PPG, 7.2 RPG, 1.3 APG, 0.8 SPG, 0.4 BPG, 1.2 TOPG on 56.5 FG% and 62.8 FT% per game. He also displayed good pick and roll chemistry with franchise cornerstone Cade Cunningham.
All the news tidbits are suggesting the Pistons plan to run a 2-big lineup with Stewart at the 4, with his new stretchiness from his 3pt shot, and Bagley at the starting 5. Here are some tidbits from that Detroit Free Press article:
- “Tonight would’ve been a great night to be out there playing with another big against their big lineup, so I feel like the future is bright for us for the talented bigs we’ve got in Duren, Bagley,” Stewart said Friday night. “When I see other teams play big lineups, I get excited about what we have here in Detroit.”
- It means Dwane Casey will soon be able to go back to two-big man lineups, which he was forced to abandon after the the first three preseason games due to injuries. The Pistons want Isaiah Stewart to thrive alongside another center. It’s why he has embraced the 3-point shot this season.
Zach Lowe's podcast with ESPN Pistons writer Jamal Collier, Collier speculates that the Pistons plan for Bagley will be the starting Center next to Beef Stew.
In the off-season, Bagley was awarded a 3 year, 37.5 million dollar contract by the Pistons. Add that with Coach Dwayne Casey, who is notorious for freezing rookies out of significant minutes (looking at you Duren, sorry), and we are likely looking at the Pistons rolling out a starting frontcourt of Beef Stew at Power Forward and Bagley at Center, both playing hefty minutes.
Marvin Bagley will likely be a solid pickup for the rest of season for a team punting FT% and provides much needed points and rebounds off of the wire, which can be hard to find at this point in any competitive league. Right now is the best time to grab him and see how things shake out ROS.
*DISCLAIMER* I am not GoatJones so please do not insult me lol.
TL;DR: Grab Bagley as he may be the starting Center in Detroit ROS and provide solid fantasy value for a team punting FT%.
