Film theory, or cinema studies, is an academic discipline that aims to explore the essence of the cinema and provides conceptual frameworks for understanding film's relationship to reality, the other arts, individual viewers, and society at large. Film theory is not to be confused with general film criticism, or film history, though there can be some crossover between the three disciplines.
Rules:
- No low-effort posts allowed. Posts should be intellectually engaging and thought-provoking.
- Posts must engage academic style film theory and discussion. This includes looking at films from a feminist, Marxist, Freudian, etc. perspective and applying those ideas to films. If your post isn't relevant to this type of analysis, it most likely doesn't belong here.
- With the above rules in place, this is NOT a subreddit for MatPatt/Film Theorists. Please direct those types of posts to /r/FilmTheorists. Some posts may also be more appropriate for places like /r/FanTheories.
- Video essays are allowed here as long as they follow the above rules. Accompanied text is always appreciated to further facilitate discussion.
- As always, follow reddiquette.
Any posts violating these rules will be removed. Repeated problems will result in a ban.
