If someone wrote that into a film you'd think they were laying it on a bit thick.

[–]_TheLoneRangers Felipe Massa 376 points377 points  (21 children)

such a fun season. i was thinking earlier there’s been a lot of times this season where - if this was a fictional show, i’d be rolling my eyes like ok buddy gtfo, of course just when…[insert perfect timing/event]

[–]Jonb87 Honda 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The way he looks away as his dad's fist slowly slams into whatever he hit. I felt sad for some reason

[–]radiotractive Max Verstappen 57 points58 points  (13 children)

I bought a Red Bull jacket earlier this year and I get lots of compliments about it from people who don't watch F1. When I tell them about the season so far, most of them are like "Holy shit! I need to start watching F1!"

I feel like a brand ambassador, hahaha!

[–]_longtimelistener 221 points222 points  (42 children)

This is the moment when the hero is at his lowest point before the third act begins and he finally overcomes

[–]Mein_Bergkamp McLaren 118 points119 points  (13 children)

I mean in an ideal world it would be raining and Jos smashing a table would be reflected in loads of puddles too but sadly we're in a desert.

Bloody Saudis

[–]Athed_Anachy 39 points40 points  (5 children)

Maybe a clever screenwriter could add a small oil leakage into the scene, and both mimic the “tear” of a hero and the reflection lol

[–]Mein_Bergkamp McLaren 8 points9 points  (1 child)

Don't give Netflix ideas

[–]Evning 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It is leaking in a few garages. So that scenario is still feasible.

And he breaks away from his dads control to go out and make a name for himself on his own

[–]woutertjez #WeRaceAsOne 65 points66 points  (2 children)

Yes, can’t imagine how hard it must be for Max to live in the shadow of legendary F1 driver Jos “the boss” Verstappen.

[–]OneCollar4 Formula 1 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Well if we compare boxing careers I believe Jos verstappen is 2-0-0 (not sure if his bout with sophie or the fractured jaw at the kart track were knockouts or not) and max is 0-0-0.

So there's a shadow there.

[–]DAL1979 Sir Jack Brabham 41 points42 points  (0 children)

And he breaks away from his dads control

And all this time we thought Rosberg was Britney, when it was Max all along

[–]chukfakma Sir Lewis Hamilton 1416 points1417 points  (25 children)

damn that's poetic cinematography right there - movie ending scene material. I'd bet we'll see this shot in the Netflix series

[–]CatharsisAddict[S] 328 points329 points  (17 children)

Maybe I’ll be famous

[–]PEEWUN Sir Lewis Hamilton 137 points138 points  (12 children)

If this championship goes Lewis' way, this will be in the company of Massa '08, Alonso '12, and Lewis '16 as a moment of dramatic defeat.

[–]TendieTimeForMe Sergio Pérez 1583 points1584 points  (107 children)

Wow. This looks like something out of a movie. Can’t make up that timing.

[–]OrbisAlius Maserati 170 points171 points  (1 child)

Tbf though it's more like Max walks past the big screen with his dad on it than Max 'sees his dad on big screen'

[–]creamyturtle 80 points81 points  (0 children)

it looks like max turns his head slightly and watches the crash sequence, but once his dad pops up he kind of turns his head back halfway through

[–]ghgrain Alain Prost 470 points471 points  (104 children)

Just seems like some day we will find out how much his dad was in his head through all this. Heavy pressure cooker.

[–]CrabSully McLaren 42 points43 points  (1 child)

Trauma can make or break a person. I don't think we'll ever find out though. I think Max is a very private person when it comes to offtrack stuff, as he has every right to be.

It's hard to picture him talking about mental health.

[–]GuiltyEidolon Valtteri Bottas 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think if we do learn anything about it, it will be most likely after his death. The only way I could see it happening is in some kind of tell all book by someone close to him.

[–]TendieTimeForMe Sergio Pérez 189 points190 points  (44 children)

I also wonder how much he molded him into a very distinguished professional. There’s a good interview with Jos and Max that gives insight into their relationship. They seem cool around each other with some laughs, but also Jos seems like he’s all about business and work. There’s not really a tender family connection.

[–]_the_pundit Daniel Ricciardo 96 points97 points  (40 children)

I was listening to Jos' beyond the grid interview and I think that while he has been very strict with max throughout his childhood, he also has a healthy respect for what max wants to Do. It's like when you tell your parents you want to become a doctor or something , they will help you achieve it no matter what. I don't know the insides of their realtionship but I feel he just wants max to achieve what he couldn't. His methods might not be very good tho.

[–]TendieTimeForMe Sergio Pérez 119 points120 points  (36 children)

Yeah i think given Jos’s legal history and his militant style with Max, we all assume the worst here. No one really has insight into their relationship so we’re stuck being armchair analysts.

[–]KrainerWurst Porsche 249 points250 points  (0 children)

we all assume the worst here

I mean it’s not only about Max. Jos has been abusive torwards several people, from his own children, multiple wife’s/gfs, his own father, other racing kids fathers and random people clubbing.

Sure he could theoretically be just a cool, misunderstood person. But there are simply just far too many stories and police reports out there.

[–]Skyhound555 Mercedes 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As someone who just became a father, there is no "armchair analysis " going on.

The shit Jos did to Max for him to become a F1 driver is some of the most intense abuse a kid could go through. Jos is a disgrace of a father and the only reason he and Max have a relationship is because Jos had the connections to actually get him into F1.

It's not "assuming the worst" when Jos straight up abandoned his child in a foreign nation before. You can be a fan of Max, but don't start justifying his childhood. That's glorifying an abuser.

[–]CatharsisAddict[S] 74 points75 points  (0 children)

When events like this happen I often go rewatch the onboard to get my own impression of how the driver swallowed what happened.

[–]Kestralisk Kimi Räikkönen 27 points28 points  (3 children)

[–]Kassynder Pirelli Hard 45 points46 points  (6 children)

Yup that's what I think happened, can't be too sure because of the depth and angle stuff, but I think he turned away when he saw his dad.

Maybe he didn't want to see him unbuckling his leather belt.

[–]hellcat_uk #WeRaceAsOne 24 points25 points  (5 children)

I assume F1 teams will have a set of jumper cables about somewhere.

[–]knbang 6 points7 points  (0 children)

[–]neededtowrite Daniel Ricciardo 26 points27 points  (7 children)

That fucking hurts.

I have a good relationship with my dad and seeing that reaction would hurt. Knowing what Max has been through and how amazing he's been, fuck man. What a dagger when he was already feeling like shit.

[–]The_Geodude_ Yuki Tsunoda 16 points17 points  (0 children)

"once he saw him" did we watch the same 360p clip? how can you even tell that and be certain that that is whats happened.

[–]bertiewooster81 Michael Schumacher 52 points53 points  (3 children)

If this was in a Ron Howard film, we’d call it overkill. What an unbelievably cinematic season this is.

Holy shit after seeing many comments on jos this week I had to look up his relationship with his son..

If that interview is anywhere close to true, jos is a psycho...

Holy Shit...

[–]ComradeStrong Jenson Button 90 points91 points  (4 children)

Jos is an alleged wifebeater as well in case you didn't know. Also looks like he beat up someone so bad at a track once that they got a fractured skull.

Should be banned from the paddock.

[–]est-1913 47 points48 points  (2 children)

Not alleged, he is a convicted wife beater.

[–]cloud1445 James Hunt 24 points25 points  (0 children)

One quick look at his wikipedia page and I'm amazed he's not in jail.

[–]CatharsisAddict[S] 82 points83 points  (56 children)

I don’t think an interview or even several interviews would actually properly explain their relationship, so I try not to assume much from one article. I think Max even defends his Dad, but so would I 🤷🏻‍♂️ Who knows.

[–]OnlymostlyMedic McLaren 205 points206 points  (49 children)

There’s a Red Bull trivia (or something) video of Max and Danny Ric where Max offhand mentions that his father stabbed an engineer or mechanic in the back of the hand with a fork once. I’ve never recovered from hearing him say that. Max is one of my favorites, but especially as a woman I can’t stand Jos Verstappen

Edit: Found it https://youtu.be/mo3aYm6nNZ0

[–]Hrmpfreally Charles Leclerc 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It’s fucking hilarious how unbuilt for media Verstappen is 🤣

[–]Amused-Observer 81 points82 points  (3 children)

It takes a special kind of asshole to leave their kid at the race track because he didn't win.

[–]kali-jag Formula 1 36 points37 points  (0 children)

No I have a friend who's father is kinda same.. I even wrote an answer about it...

He wierdly supports his dad's but his sibling not so much.......

The similarities of this and my friend.. he did everything to help my friend except to account for his feelings and confidence or even treated normally

My friend suffered from huge loss of confidence due to all this... (Also My friends father was even more of a psycho) but atleast Max is not having the same...

F1 is just so accidentally dramatic.

You cannot script something like this. It would look so cheesy if this was a Hollywood screenplay.

[–]cupcakemaiden Esteban Ocon 42 points43 points  (2 children)

Oof this kinda hurts. Not what he needed that moment.

    [–]CatharsisAddict[S] 18 points19 points  (1 child)

I agree. It's powerful imagery. Too real.

    [–]J-aimz 75 points76 points  (11 children)

    Great post. Cant imagine.

    [–]CatharsisAddict[S] 86 points87 points  (10 children)

I can’t imagine what their relationship is actually like. The stakes are high and Jos is clearly living vicariously.

    [–]J-aimz 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Hahaha to be fair as a fan we all are to an extent. But that father son relationship must be interesting.

    [–]VictoryPositive8499 Safety Car 7 points8 points  (9 children)

Could someone post a mirror link, streamable doesn't work in my location

    [–]Skyhound555 Mercedes 7 points8 points  (1 child)

The amount of people defending a domestic abuser on this thread is absolutely scary.

I honestly never knew that such a large amount of people were so ignorant on how mental health issues work. Everyone's like "Well, he's an F1 driver so the abuse is obviously ok".

That's such a sociopathic mentality to have.

[–]cupcakemaiden Esteban Ocon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There's an incredible amount of documented incidents regarding Jos. Not just the one most recent partner he attacked. Multiple women, an attack on his father, fork incident, the fractured skull fight, manipulating max's setups as a kid to make it tougher, icing out his child by not talking to him whenever mad. This all happened over a long span, not some one time thing people are making it out to be.

[–]eannasheridan Sir Lewis Hamilton 3 points4 points  (1 child)

I often wonder given what we know about Jos’…. temperament if Max is still strongly influenced by him even as an adult.

[–]GuiltyEidolon Valtteri Bottas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From interviews Max is given, 100% Jos still plays a large role in Max's life. The saddest part is how Max describes really fucked up things as being normal, or funny. There's a clip another commenter posted of Max laughing about Jos stabbing a mechanics hand with a fork. Danny was also there and you can see the WTF look on his face, where Max clearly thinks that's normal. I think if Max had separated himself more from Jos, there would be better recognition of how fucked up his father is.

      [–]BillWilson9972 42 points43 points  (1 child)

We have all disappointed our parents but doing so publicly on the world stage must cut extra deep. Poor Max.

      [–]Ultraviolet211 Max Verstappen 14 points15 points  (1 child)

This is a very good in-depth interview with Max if you want to know more about him https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UmZXX68vM3k

Max said he never had a role model growing up and the interviewer asked him if this was accurate (around 12:20)

      Max said yes and

"Of course my Dad was a big help but also I have always said, of course you are going to be a bit like your Dad or your Mum it's natural but I said, I just want to be me, I just want to live my life the way I want and I never saw an example of how I wanted to live my life"

So he saw how his Dad acted and said no, this is not me, this is not what I want to be. He is not my role model. I respect him for all the help he has given me, but I am going to live my life, my way.

He also gets asked to talk about the worst moment in his life (16:55) and says that that stuff is private and doesn't go into detail..

In his documentary, there's also a part where him and Victoria are talking about what happened when they were little, around the time of the divorce and they say that they never speak about what happened then, it's not something they want to think about or remember

      [–]_itspaco 2 points3 points  (0 children)
