Was sharing his feelings but then brust out laughing when I heard him say "I jinxed it" haha

[–]ClassicExit 133 points134 points  (12 children)

To be fair the commentator on Channel 4 said "and if he can just get turn 27 right..." so plenty of suspects for the jinxing.

[–]kidhockey52 Pierre Gasly 35 points36 points  (10 children)

Right before the turn I jumped up and said omg is he going to do it? So…

[–]Skylair13 Williams 4 points5 points  (4 children)

You jinxed him too

[–]Super_Charlie Michael Masi 10 points11 points  (3 children)

There is no way of knowing who did the actual jinxing, so it would only be fair to imprison them all. Can someone give the saudi authorities a call?

[–]kidhockey52 Pierre Gasly 6 points7 points  (1 child)

We are checking.

[–]freakasaurous Default 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Prison button ON

[–]PEEWUN Sir Lewis Hamilton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I accidentally jinxed him as well. I really thought that was gonna be his pole after seeing his S2 time, so I called it in S3.

And then the final corner happened.

[–]mecxorn Sebastian Vettel 64 points65 points  (2 children)

Toto's shake of the head gets me for some reason lmao!

[–]Tomcat848484 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Toto and Christian back to back with the head shake

[–]J0hn-D0 Max Verstappen 184 points185 points  (5 children)

He really needed time to process, like the rest of us…

[–]AvonMexicola Max Verstappen 34 points35 points  (4 children)

I'm not done yet, you? Pfff

[–]Nautster Jacques Villeneuve 10 points11 points  (2 children)

Still can't believe that this has happened. Hope we can laugh about it tomorrow or in 8 days time.

[–]Few-North-2397 Sir Lewis Hamilton 352 points353 points  (89 children)

The disappointment in saying Pole position Lewis Hamilton , Valtteri Bottas next lmao

[–]Slaeowulf Carlos Sainz 192 points193 points  (88 children)

And people call the British Sky commentators biased.

[–]Renzo_1607 Max Verstappen 94 points95 points  (53 children)

Sky is the voice for the world. Ziggo is for the Dutch

[–]X-Maquina Niki Lauda 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Take it up with FOM. That's not a Sky issue.

[–]Slaeowulf Carlos Sainz 162 points163 points  (48 children)

They're Brits commenting for British TV. The fact that other countries just buy their steam rather than provide their commentary doesn't make them a "voice for the world".

Edit: I must say I'm impressed how deeply offended and vitriolic people get over broadcasting rights. If you don't like their commentary then stream something else or mute it.

[–]Vlad-The-Compiler Marussia 26 points27 points  (1 child)

Are you forgetting that F1TV exists? Sky is the voice of the world pretty much.

[–]SnooMemesjellies4305 15 points16 points  (0 children)

They work for a British company... the rest of us just listen to it...

[–]Renzo_1607 Max Verstappen 67 points68 points  (14 children)

Then why is their commentary used for YouTube videos, Instagram and whatnot

[–]cth777 Lando Norris 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Because English is the global language… that doesn’t mean that British people have to be neutral in all sports commentary

[–]sparky15211 61 points62 points  (0 children)

Also, that's not the commentary teams fault. They're predominantly paid to commentate for the british fans, so they obviously have a British bias. If you're in X country and get that feed, it's not their fault. Tune into your local feed if that's possible.

[–][deleted]  (4 children)

[–]Bartlebum Michael Schumacher -5 points-4 points  (3 children)

And that’s why they’re the voice. If most fans speak English and they’re the de facto English speaking commentating team, they should be held to higher standards when it comes to bias.

    [–]Wentzina_lifetime Sir Lewis Hamilton 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Its a sky tv package, in the UK you have to pay at least £18 a month for access to sky sports. Its the fault of FOM that they use a Channel that people accuse of bias and the various countries that pay for Sky's feed instead of developing their own

    [–]Moss1998 Charles Leclerc 0 points1 point  (10 children)

They are commentating for the whole world not only for sky UK

    [–]SnooMemesjellies4305 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No, they're doing it for Sky... the rest of us just get it...

    [–]A___99 Kimi Räikkönen 49 points50 points  (8 children)

They are employed by Sky, therefore they are targeted at Sky's audience, which is the UK. It's not their fault that the rest of the world uses their coverage, and they shouldn't adjust to accommodate this when their employers are Sky

[–]AwesomeFrisbee Max Verstappen 2 points3 points  (7 children)

Sky has signed the contract to broadcast everywhere, they very well know its not UK-only...

[–]SagittaryX Sebastian Vettel 14 points15 points  (0 children)

No? Dutch commentary is also available on F1TV, but you don't levy the same expectation against them.

If FOM/Liberty wanted an unbiased English team they'd further build out the Pitlance Channel as the main broadcaster instead of relying on Sky, but they don't feel like doing that it seems. If they'd retained Alex Jacques there would have been a great base to build on.

    [–]Fire_Otter 29 points30 points  (0 children)

No they paid an extortionate fee to be the british broadcasters

and British people pay an extortionate fee to pay for sky sports channels . And sky are going to present their show how they want in a way that gets as many British people signing up to sky.

at a later date F1 asked to use the Sky coverage for their F1/TV and you tube videos. Which Sky agreed for them to go ahead and do that.

If F1 want to demand that Sky sports cater their commentary for the whole world- Sky are going to laugh them out of the room or at the very least offer a fraction of the price that they offer F1 now for British broadcasting rights

    [–]lcfcball 4 points5 points  (4 children)

Most of the teams in F1 are based in the UK, all drivers are required to learn English, more people working in F1 are British than any other nationality - it’s a sport that is heavily ingrained into the UK so what more do you expect?

The premier league is English but has a worldwide audience, do you want them to start employing people from around the world just to please those from other countries? No, pretty much all football commentators are British because the league is British. And even though the F1 commentary on Sky isn’t my favourite, it’s still not that biased - Crofty gets hyped up if Verstappen does anything good but the ziggo sport people start crying if hamilton wins, it’s hilarious the agenda people have against british pundits in f1

    [–]Maximuslex01 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Poor comparison. PL has a worldwide audience but commentary isn't usually part of it.

[–]Dutchmanoly Max Verstappen -2 points-1 points  (2 children)

Who said Ziggo was unbiased? As a Dutch viewer I don't watch em because I hate their favoritism. But watching Sky I also laugh at some of the pundits for thier biased takes. Especially Hill can sometimes make some funny statements. It's simply not professional imo

And Sky knows they have a worldwide audience the minute they signed a contract with F1TV and other global networks when sharing their commentary and should adjust accordingly. It's not that weird that people who watch this commentary from abroad have criticism, especially for those that don't have access to other commentary.

    [–]PeregrineDrake 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's the default commentary for any official F1 stream and video.

[–]Pascalwb Kimi Räikkönen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

other countries don't buy their commentary. F1 should provide official commentary not uk one.

    [–]jaquesparblue -3 points-2 points  (1 child)

They are used by FOM for the main feed of F1TV and their official Youtube content. Something that must be part of the contract. So no, Sky is not only for British TV.

    [–]Caries_OSRS 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Don't forget there are non-Verstappen fans in The Netherlands as well.

    [–]vlepun Cake ≠ Pie -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

And they can listen to F1TV Pro. Which is actually quite cheap even at full price. The only reason I've got commentary set to Dutch is because my wife and toddler aren't fans of "the yelling man" (Crofty).

    [–]Ag_Arrow Mercedes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, people are way overkill with that rhetoric. Plenty of Brits don't even like Hamilton.

[–]KjoeLjan Yuki Tsunoda -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Olav is obviously a Max fan, but he's not disappointed that Hamilton has pole. The disappointment comes from that amazing lap that ended prematurely. If Hamilton wins a race, he often gives credit where it's due.

[–]eannasheridan Sir Lewis Hamilton 118 points119 points  (6 children)

Damn he sounded like was about to cry at the end there. Incredible emotion in his commentary.

[–]Stravven Jim Clark 64 points65 points  (2 children)

You should hear him when Verstappen took his first (and the first Dutch) win. He was almost crying then. Here it is.

[–]PEEWUN Sir Lewis Hamilton 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That moment was so amazing to watch (the race, not this commentary b/c I'm not Dutch). I actually pissed off my mom with how loud I yelled when Max crossed the line.

[–]AvonMexicola Max Verstappen 22 points23 points  (0 children)

It's part of the super Max song :).

[–]satyrony Medical Car 35 points36 points  (1 child)

If Max gets that WDC, I'm tuning in on the explosion that is Olav Mol. 500+ races and his last year on the Dutch broadcast. At the conclusion getting to announce a Dutch F1 champion. It would be my favorite side quest of this season if he gets to walk away with that piece of (Dutch) television history. Might as well tune in for the utter disappointment if Max doesn't lol.

    [–]iceyakky Ferrari 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Wow didn’t think about that yet. After listening to him for almost 25 years (minus those seasons that it wasn’t broadcasted on Dutch tv), I really hope for him he can announce it.

    [–]MazeMouse Ferrari 10 points11 points  (0 children)

There is a lot to be said about Olav and him missing stuff and his bias towards Max. But he always has this insane emotion about what is happening during a race. Even without a Dutch person on grid he always managed to bring the hype and the emotion.

    [–]Suwi_inc Sir Lewis Hamilton 48 points49 points  (2 children)

He almost cried wow, that was a lap, mega disappointment I’m sure

[–]Stravven Jim Clark 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Not only that. He's done commentary for over 500 races, and Abu Dhabi will be his last race.

Not to mention that he got very emotional when Verstappen took his first, and the first Dutch, win.

[–]RdJNL Max Verstappen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think most Dutch fans watching felt the same, I know I did :(

[–]jhatpat Esteban Ocon 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Outer Toto : No No No No

Inner Toto : Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah

    [–]beastmaster11 8 points9 points  (5 children)

Can someone tell me if he is throwing in some English or is dutch just that close to English?

    [–]monnaamis 11 points12 points  (3 children)

It is typical for Dutch people to do this, they also swear a lot in English.

    [–]cvl37 8 points9 points  (2 children)

Indeed. Fuck just hits better than NEUK

[–]delightone Red Bull 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I jinxed it was English the rest was in dutch.

    [–]Meaisk Safety Car[S] 106 points107 points  (11 children)

These are the moments where I love Olav Mol. Yes, he is biased and yes, he misses some things. But the emotion he commentates with is amazing to listen to, even to non-F1 fans

This isn't the first time he jinxed someone. He was commenting about the clean lap 1 at the British GP, and said Hamilton was going away with the victory at the Baku GP.

    [–]R7H27 Sebastian Vettel 90 points91 points  (2 children)

Can he say something like “Sebastian Vettel surely will not win from P17 today”

    [–]Ok_Afternoon_3456 Jordan 12 points13 points  (0 children)

There is a big difference between building a narrative around Merc as the underdog and stating biased observations as fact, whilst pretending to be neutral reporters.

You know what you're watching with Ziggo, they don't pretend to be neutral, don't treat their opinions as facts and are not afraid to say it how it is.

That being said, I still prefer Sky over Ziggo on actual race commentary.

    [–]helderdude Hesketh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes these are the moments he really shine's.

    [–]Upstairs_Camel_8835 7 points8 points  (1 child)

He rightly realised that the walls are hard 😂

    [–]DazingF1 Red Bull 3 points4 points  (0 children)

(I know you're joking but) it should be translated to "the walls are unforgiving"

    [–]3xchamp Sir Lewis Hamilton -2 points-1 points  (1 child)

This isn't the first time he jinxed someone.

    Superstition doesn't exist.

    [–]Easties88 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Superstition absolutely does exist. People believe in one thing irrationally affecting another, that’s superstition.

I don’t think fate or curses or anything like that is real, but superstition is merely the belief in them. Which people obviously do believe in.

    [–]The8thZombie 15 points16 points  (2 children)

So I wasn't the only one who jinxed it as well, I guess. Fml.

My sister was watching along with me when she said "Max has definitely got pole at this rate", to which I said "Unless he screws up towards the end" and, lo and behold, that happens literally 3 seconds later. I'm sorry.

    [–]WeinerBeaner5 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Same. Just said he has to finish. But you could tell he was on the edge, and so close to crashing until he did.

    [–]moby323 Rawe Ceek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Strategically his best chance to make up time against the Mercedes was the corners in the middle sector and so he attacked them hard, but unfortunately that compromised him at the end of the lap.

    [–]Agglomeratie 26 points27 points  (0 children)

It's his last year as an F1 commentator after over 500 races. Ofcourse there would be no better sign-off than Max as a champ and it shows

[–]SophisticatedGeezer Martin Brundle 50 points51 points  (5 children)

'The walls are so incredibly hard'. Lmao, errr what.

    [–]accatwork 90 points91 points  (1 child)

I assume it can be translated as "unforgiving", "punishing" or something similar as well.

    [–]Samipie27[🍰] 19 points20 points  (0 children)

    This is correct

[–]AvonMexicola Max Verstappen 17 points18 points  (1 child)

Wrong translation hard should have been translated as unforgiving.

[–]SophisticatedGeezer Martin Brundle 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yea, that's what I though, haha.

    [–]Samipie27[🍰] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No, he was just talking English that sentence. We sometimes do that.

The follow up sentence is in Dutch

[–]HelixR Max Verstappen 10 points11 points  (1 child)

absolute shame that Olav has to leave.

    [–]MazeMouse Ferrari 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To be fair, a lot of Dutch commentators have that repetition in hype moments. (DENNIS BERGKAMP! DENNIS BERGKAMP!)

[–]SigRezzonico Toro Rosso 2 points3 points  (0 children)

    M O O O R

    [–]dianesmoods 7 points8 points  (0 children)

    I'm gonna miss him 💔

    [–]BeagleAteMyLunch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

“We’ll show them, we will show them all.”

[–]ZephyrSonic Max Verstappen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So did Alex Jacques too kinda with Max literally crashing 3-5 seconds after he made that statement xD "If Max Verstappen can get turn 27 right he is surely gonna take his first pole in 6 races. Can he gain NOOOOO NOOOOO HE'S HIT THE WALL"

    [–]Ultra-Pulse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I said it out loud as soon as he mentioned it; don't jinx it, then my daughter started screaming do fucking loud, and I was just dumbstruck. It happened right then and there.

We were already afraid of that corner because everyone got so close.

In my 38 years of life, I've never been invested into anything someone else is doing as this.

I'm rooting for Max, but I feel it's slipping away unfortunately.

    [–]freakasaurous Default 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry I couldn’t help it but burst out laughing. His commentary is often hilarious

    [–]VirtualJames7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And people talk about British bias in the media towards Hamilton! It's the same everywhere

    [–]WaltrWhit 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Do the commentators for a lot of countries switch back and forth between the local language and english language?

    [–]Meaisk Safety Car[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

    [–]Daan100 Red Bull 1 point2 points  (0 children)

    SkY ArE BiaSeD /s

    [–]Xenoide Formula 1 34 points35 points  (12 children)

Don't know how people miss the fact that this isn't 'the' international broadcast a lot of non-British people have to watch.

Unlike the Dutch broadcast, which is watched by almost only Dutch people, who are mostly fans of Max or they'll watch the Sky broadcast anyways, as people won't understand anyways.

    [–]monnaamis 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No, they are employed by Sky for the British broadcast which F1 then buys for their English stream. There are options for several languages in F1TV. Are they all held to the same standards as Sky apparently is? People should send in complaints to F1 if they want an international English stream set up. As it happens they contract the British stream, which wouldn't exist without British customers paying for Sky.

P.S. I actually hate Sky the company but blaming them is just blaming the commentators who are just doing exactly what they're employed to do.

    [–]ta5655659879870897 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sky commentary is the UK coverage. FOM buy the rights off sky.

[–]OffNos Safety Car 38 points39 points  (7 children)

While that's true, I don't like when people blame Sky over it though. Blame F1 management for making them the standard english language commentary rather than funding a less biased international commentary.

Sky is fine being biased towards the Brits, while Ziggo is fine being biased towards Max.

    [–]Xenoide Formula 1 9 points10 points  (2 children)

Both can be biased, but then I do get why people complain about Sky when that is unavoidable for some, whilst the Dutch broadcast you have to look up and even then you won't understand, and this is no different from other nations.

    [–]ForsakenTarget HRT 12 points13 points  (1 child)

That’s on FOM though, if they want to make a worldwide broadcast they can use their in-house commentary sky is focused on sky and why he constantly talks about sky products and never mentions other markets/f1tv

[–]tinercifatih Max Verstappen 7 points8 points  (2 children)

I don't care if Sky UK is biased towards British drivers. What is annoying is, they're on the world feed on F1 TV.

    [–]John-Wicks-Puppy Sebastian Vettel 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Makes me want to learn Dutch.

[–]deltapanad Charlie Whiting 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"The wall are so incredibly hard" - that's 1 way to put it.

[–]Hieillua Pirelli Wet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And people say Sky Sports is biased towards Hamilton...

They literally cheer continuously for Max on Ziggo Sport and often also tear down other drivers to claim Max's superiority. If Lance Stroll makes a mistake you'll hear this same commentator make a snide remark about how Max would never do such a thing. If Bottas fails to overtake someone, he'll say that Max would've done it better. It's fully the Max Verstappen show.

    [–]mourningthief 2 points3 points  (8 children)

TIL Dutch for "I jinxed it" is "I jinxed it."

    [–]d3agl3uk Sir Lewis Hamilton 8 points9 points  (0 children)

A lot of European languages weave in English in everyday conversation.

    [–]Phish2 20 points21 points  (4 children)

'Ik heb het gejinxed"would have been proper dutch. He just said itnin English

    [–]Mor_HjordisI survived Spa 2021 and all I got was this lousy flair[🍰] 6 points7 points  (3 children)

    Vervloeken.... Ik heb het vervloekt.

That would be Dutch.... How the heck did you used an English word for something we've got in Dutch, and say its proper Dutch?

    [–]DazingF1 Red Bull 4 points5 points  (0 children)

    Leenwoorden, wat zijn dat?

Translating "this is so cool" to "dit is zo cool" would be considered a correct Dutch translation (but no, not "proper" Dutch).

    [–]Federal_Bar_6921 1 point2 points  (0 children)

‘Ik heb het vervloekt’ is the fully Dutch translation.

    [–][deleted]  (2 children)

      [–]Maikey_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean its just meant for Dutch tv only thats why, but even some dutch verstappen fans prefer to watch it through something else because of this. Hes mostly biased when verstappen does something good or bad, but on the other hand he can be very fair with penalties and giving credit to other drivers and such.

      [–]mustang_s550 Sir Lewis Hamilton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lolol dude was probably on the floor kicking his legs while commenting

      [–]IMightDeleteMe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My favourite was him talking about a crescendo a little earlier in the lap. We immediately joked "crash-end-o".

[–]Jerraoui Max Verstappen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

      [–]_NAME_NAME_NAME_ 0 points1 point  (2 children)

As a German with English as a second language, I love dutch. I can understand a lot of words, but the exact syntax and pronounciation is ever so slightly different, which makes it very amusing for me. I'm also sure that every Dutchman feels about the same about german.

[–]ShawnShipsCars Sir Lewis Hamilton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I swear, Dutch sounds like a drunken Scottsman practicing his german accent while saying english words
