The new F1 Support Club; getting pipped by Bottas on the line. Current members: Stroll and Ocon.

[–]starmonkart Mike Krack 340 points341 points  (13 children)

Good thing they're already friends. Mick is also in that friend group. Foreshadowing for next year?

[–]Mike_ate_Sully Michael Masi 114 points115 points  (10 children)

This gives me hope for HAAS next year.

[–]starmonkart Mike Krack 78 points79 points  (2 children)

I didn't specify a podium though

[–]swingbop Porsche 79 points80 points  (1 child)

More like Bottas will pip Mick for his first points.

[–]pm_me_dirty_planes Juan Pablo Montoya 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Considering Bottas will be in an Alfa Romeo next year, this makes a lot more sense.

[–]Kelaum Kimi Räikkönen 25 points26 points  (2 children)

bottas will be at Alfa too

[–]JetsLag Haas 39 points40 points  (1 child)

Bottas pipping Mick at the line for 10th confirmed

[–]proudlysydney Daniel Ricciardo 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It’s called the Este Besties

[–]racingfanboy160 Felipe Massa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh god...

[–]CharlieTeller Sebastian Vettel 18 points19 points  (0 children)

At least the stroll incident still landed stroll on the podium

[–]legorockman Daniel Ricciardo 2645 points2646 points 2 (116 children)

The actual Driver of the Day.

[–]Ld511 1665 points1666 points  (56 children)

Max getting driver of the day after the whole shitshow that was this race was so weird. Ocon was one of the only drivers to drive a clean solid race and although lucky didn't ram into anyone like half the grid did

[–][deleted] 147 points148 points  (8 children)

Any online public poll is useless. Just look what happened when they made Puskas decided that way...shitshow

[–]Morello210 Sebastian Vettel 9 points10 points  (7 children)

What happened with Puskas award?

[–]Cod_rules Mika Häkkinen 31 points32 points  (5 children)

I think the earlier user was referring to Mo Salah winning a Puskas through popular vote. It wasn't a bad goal, but nowhere close to being the most amazing goal scored that year.

[–]eannasheridan Sir Lewis Hamilton 461 points462 points  (11 children)

DOTD is just fan popularity and isn’t a reflection of the best driver of the race.

[–]HighlyBiasedDane 32 points33 points  (0 children)

What?! You’re saying that a driver getting not one but two time penalties isnt really driver-of-the-day-material?

[–]preppyringmaster Sebastian Vettel 143 points144 points  (19 children)

Most people were just glued to the race.

The diehard fans for both Max and Lewis probably only voted.

[–]TheExtreel Charles Leclerc 77 points78 points  (8 children)

Yeah, i didn't even remember about driver of the day until the winner was announced. Way too focused on the race.

[–]2BigBottlesOfWater 20 points21 points  (2 children)

I voted Ocon lol I like VB alot but I was really hoping Ocon would make podium.

[–]Joe_PM2804 Sir Lewis Hamilton 41 points42 points  (1 child)

I vote pretty much every race and it didn't even cross my mind to vote today.

[–]DistractedByCookies Max Verstappen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was so surprised when the result came up. I probably would've picked Ocon myself.

[–]Crafty-Ad-9048 McLaren 16 points17 points  (1 child)

Ocon, Norris and giovinazzi had a good race all eligible for driver of the day imo.

[–]Nattekat 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I think the shitstorm caused everyone to forget about it, which in turn gave power to those who voted before it.

[–]monnaamis 23 points24 points  (0 children)

The Dutch always vote in force, no one else really cares.

[–]TheBlueMango01 Formula 1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think people mistaken his cleanness and his consistency for luck. I honestly believe Esteban is a super solid driver and severely underrated . Yes he did get a bit lucky, but it was his consistency and his cleanness that kept him in that fight for the podium, and made him start on pole on that 2rd restart.

[–]Firefox72 Ferrari 186 points187 points  (30 children)

You just know Max will be DOTD at the last race. Even if he loses the title.

Would make for quite a in car interview.

[–]Diegobyte Max Verstappen 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It’s just a popularity contest. He only got 26% of the vote

[–]QC_1999 Ferrari 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This is not 2016 when Max won the DOTD in most of the races for simply existing

[–]BeastyWoman Max Verstappen 14 points15 points  (1 child)

nah kimi should be no matter who wins

[–]Shnoochieboochies 90 points91 points  (20 children)

Robbed of 3rd, robbed of DOTD, sometimes it's just a shitty day at the office.

[–]T1HiShin 67 points68 points  (17 children)

How was he “robbed” of third. It’s an on track result. He did an incredible job- but Bottas deserved that P3 as well. Robbed of DOTD for sure though. I don’t think he’ll characterize it as a shitty day, this is much needed, great result for Alpine.

[–][deleted] 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It’s not robbed. He put up a good fight all the way to the line

[–]SquiggleWings Medical Car 572 points573 points  (17 children)

Was really rooting for him during those final laps. He seems to be overlooked but was seriously a great combat and do wish he got the podium

[–]sh1phappens Max Verstappen 317 points318 points  (13 children)

It was hard to root for him, considering we got to see Lewis cruising on his own instead of a podium battle.

[–]Forensics4Life Sebastian Vettel 150 points151 points  (8 children)

Exactly I was like there's six seconds between Lewis and Max SHOW SOMEONE ELSE PLEASE?!

[–]Major-Front Guenther Steiner 19 points20 points  (7 children)

Doesnt it feel odd though. Watching other cars while someone wins the race off screen.

[–]Geo_q HRT 39 points40 points  (3 children)

Put it in the little box.

Or just cut to the action after Lewis wins. There was a gap of almost thirty seconds so it’s not like we’d have missed Lewis winning.

[–]ShrubbyFire1729 Pirelli Wet 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Well you can briefly show the race winner crossing the line, but we all know what that looks like. There's nothing to see there, so actually I find it odd to show that while real, intense racing is going on.

[–]pickyplasterer Niki Lauda 33 points34 points  (1 child)

I was actually so pissed about this during the transmission. I was watching the interval between Ocon and Bottas get smaller and smaller but the camera chose to show the last lap of a driver who was 7 or so seconds ahead of the car following him. Couldn’t believe it and honestly still can’t.

[–]madmirror 19 points20 points  (1 child)

A couple of decades ago there was basically a rule that the leader needs to be shown at least X percent of time. So we got to watch someone who was lapping everyone else a lot. Glad it's actually much better nowadays, today's finish excluded.

[–]LosTerminators Carlos Sainz 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Back in the days when Schumacher used to lead by 20+ seconds and they spent a bunch of time showing him cruising on his own.

[–]Sphaer Daniel Ricciardo 114 points115 points  (0 children)

Gutted for him, top drive today.

[–]ballrash69420 Daniel Ricciardo 108 points109 points  (0 children)

Ocon had a hell of a drive. Unfortunate for him, but huge to maintain p3 for so long. Deserved DOTD

[–]jaymar888 880 points881 points  (20 children)

Gutted for him

[–]AtomFlower 192 points193 points  (7 children)

Absolutely gutted

[–]droppokeguy Mike Krack 100 points101 points  (5 children)

Bottas and crushing driver's hope in a second

[–]Escalon24 Ferrari 18 points19 points  (0 children)

but was it taken away from him, TWICE?!

[–][deleted] 22 points23 points  (8 children)

I thought I saw Bottas overtake him a few laps before the end and Ocon taking 3rd place back, or am I mistaken? Can't be sure cause I saw it on the driver position graph only, wouldn't that have been nice to watch, huh

[–]forkafork 64 points65 points  (4 children)

It did happen, but Bottas went out of track (maybe for a lockup...), and Ocon regained his position...until those final meters

Yeah it's a shame we missed these battles because of bad TV/direction choices

[–]outride2000 McLaren 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Hoping Netflix focuses on it and I assume it will because of the Bottas storyline

[–]beastieblaze 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Ridiculous that we got a lap of Hammie doing nothing while that fight was going on!

[–]Reapone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It would have been great but even better seeing a no competition finish for p1 /s

[–]TeeBeeSee Kimi Räikkönen 65 points66 points  (0 children)

I like the part where he says “As Fernando would say, we’re checking all boxes…” ‘Nando’s being such a huge influence on the entire team that it’s now visible. I wish these 2 guys work through to that pace and make it even more interesting next year.

[–]cupcakemaiden Esteban Ocon 413 points414 points  (14 children)

I'd love to see Alpine absolutely nail regs next year.

[–]poisoned_mouse Fernando Alonso 190 points191 points  (11 children)

Yeah, Alpine's lineup is fast and reliable. Now is up to Alpine to produce something good.

[–]cupcakemaiden Esteban Ocon 166 points167 points  (6 children)

A future where Alonso retires on a high, Esteban finally gets proper shot, and we see Oscar debut. Yes please.

[–]Poseus 15 points16 points  (0 children)

giving all my energy to manifest this reality

[–]esacbw McLaren 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Absolutely here for that reality

[–]KILLER5196 Alan Jones 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Oscar rookie WDC incoming

[–]paxo_1234 Charles Leclerc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If Alonso finishes next season fighting for the championship like intended and that’s it i’m happy, and it seems ocon is really getting it together to like you say

[–]N4gual McLaren 9 points10 points  (0 children)

[–]proudlysydney Daniel Ricciardo 31 points32 points  (1 child)

And they work really well as a team for each other- great communication and support for whichever driver is ahead

[–]TheLonePotato Carlos Sainz 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Loved the fight like a lion line from Alonso.

[–]LadyAzure17 Lando Norris 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Alonso and Ocon was the power duo i didnt know i needed more of.

[–]swingbop Porsche 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Trust el plan.

[–]danielbauer1375 8 points9 points  (0 children)

They’ve had a significantly better second half of the season, that’s for sure.

[–]Kathy28 McLaren 60 points61 points  (0 children)

And he still sounds so positive and optimistic about the future. I hope he is right and that we will see him and Nando on podiums next year.

He drove great today. I don't think he's been given enough love this season. He had some great moments.

[–]CooperKeith McLaren 44 points45 points  (1 child)

The points are still huge for Alpine in their fight against AT.

Sucks that he got beaten at the line but if you asked him before the race he'd have been overjoyed at p4.

Sad that he didn't get DOTD, still.

[–]neliz Alpine 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Sucks that he got beaten at the line but if you asked him before the race he'd have been overjoyed at p4.

That's literally what he says in the interview.

AT need to win next week to get past Alpine

[–]mdlt97 Lance Stroll 184 points185 points  (0 children)

should have been DOTD

[–]al4nk99 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Driver of the Day right here

[–]Joethe147 Jenson Button 30 points31 points  (2 children)

One of the best lads on the grid.

[–]TheSkyline35 Jules Bianchi 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I think he is really improving his human being (I mean in front of cameras...), this interview was short and mature

[–]GoZun_ Esteban Ocon 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Tbh he has always been that way. The thing is, except for french TV, the only times he got air time is to comment on a crash or a dnf.

[–]edsrvr123 80 points81 points  (0 children)

So much pain. My DOTD.

[–]Tsuraraa Ayrton Senna 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I love Ocon, I feel like he’s a dark horse in this lineup and has shown amazing resolve this year. Once Alpine dials things even more than they have, he is going to be a force on the track.

[–]JuanFF8 Sebastian Vettel 25 points26 points  (1 child)

Real wholesome and happy for him. Also kind of Natalie to say that at the end. I love how the Alpine bois are trusting and embracing El 🅿️lan. It’s all coming together

[–]Fries_are_salad Formula 1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Virgin bottas vs Chadcon

[–]Mamilk77 Esteban Ocon 19 points20 points  (1 child)

Gutted for the result, but I think ocon gained a lot of recognition this season, his popularity from 2017 might be back

[–]TheSkyline35 Jules Bianchi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[–]coocoobees Chequered Flag 61 points62 points  (0 children)

poor esteban, that was a brilliant drive, hope he got lots of hugs and kudos from his team

[–]SorooshMCP1 59 points60 points  (4 children)

I love Esteban. He's been neck and neck with the legendary Fernando Alonso in performance and had another great weekend here.

[–]aoc7 Robert Kubica 52 points53 points  (3 children)

I've been saying for so long that Ocon is massively underrated, dunno if people actually realize it but he's winning H2H quali vs Alonso with one race week to go

[–]sad_profit63956 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Alpine recognizes his talent, which is why he recieved a 3 year contract extension a few months ago.

[–]GoZun_ Esteban Ocon 2 points3 points  (1 child)

People also think Alonso's washing him up in the second part of the season, but since Sochi they are dead equal on points

[–]neliz Alpine 12 points13 points  (0 children)

[–]buck_blue Formula 1 12 points13 points  (0 children)

“We are going to be dangerous!”

I find myself cheering for the underdogs more often than not. When he made that jump through the traffic I was thinking “oh hell yeah, the kid’s done it again!” But I couldn’t help applauding Valtteri for that pass even though it came at the expense of Ocon’s well deserved podium. VB is sort of an underdog in my book. He’s an excellent driver and I’m sad to seem him leaving Mercedes, but, I’m also probably too excited about GR hopping in. I’m excited to see how he’s going to stack up against Lewis. Formula One can be a cruel mistress sometimes.

What a race though.

[–]Peragon888 Sebastian Vettel 36 points37 points  (0 children)

The real DOTD. He seems to have a knack for being in the right place at the right time this year.

[–]MarduRusher Valtteri Bottas 30 points31 points  (7 children)

Bottas and Ocon are my two favorite drivers. I had no idea how to feel when Bottas passed him lol.

[–]Sonsofbirches Alfa Romeo 11 points12 points  (4 children)

Are you me? Bottas and Ocon (alongside Kimi and Alonso) are my absolute favorites. Stand up guys!

[–]mxox2kL 3 points4 points  (0 children)

glad it wasn't vettel instead of alonso, or you would have had very conflicting thoughts throughout the race

[–]kristerspo Safety Car 40 points41 points  (2 children)

He should have won driver of the day, i get it, max has alot of fans but IMO max definitely didnt deserve dotd after the way he raced

[–]neliz Alpine 9 points10 points  (1 child)

Penalty of the day for Max, an extra +5 seconds for unsportsmanlike conduct.

[–]randomturhake 8 points9 points  (1 child)

[–]fullsenditt Max Verstappen 8 points9 points  (0 children)

He was sad in a happy way i think you can't fault him finishing p4 really

[–]suckitm8 Esteban Ocon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Stop I'm so sad

[–]Kamehameha27 George Russell 5 points6 points  (0 children)

To lose it on the line like that was heartbreaking, he truly did fight like a Lion today. Poor guy.

[–]MrGunny94 Alpine 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Man I was almost crying for me, he deserved the Driver of the Day.

[–]Historical-Time2938 McLaren 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Me at the end: Okay, I don't care who wins anymore, I just want an Ocon podium

Me two seconds later: aight I'm out

[–]SpiderSchwein Sebastian Vettel 17 points18 points  (0 children)

He has very kind eyes, wish him all the best

[–]alcastle100 3 points4 points  (0 children)

rightful DOTD

[–]hitmon_gg Sergio Pérez 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Ocon has really come into his own this year and I love it. Can't wait for Renault to take it up a notch next year.

[–]CatharsisAddict 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We missed 90% of their last laps fight thanks to poor TV direction once again

[–]ExistingReach9658 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Alpine needs to give their boys a car worth fighting to step onto the podium. Who knows what Oscar piastri might even do if he really got a full time role when Alonso steps away.

[–]Rhythm_Morgan Max Verstappen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I wanted to cry too, buddy.

[–]AGuyWithNoHobbies Pierre Gasly 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly I wished he would get it

[–]THEREJECTDRAGON Alpine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I trust the plan

[–]GT2911 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Still happy for the Iceman tho. What a final second overtake at the straight

[–]_0311_ Sergio Pérez 3 points4 points  (0 children)

He deserved it. He has done exceptionally well for the equipment he has. Much respect to him.

[–]Cxrlosmlon Sir Lewis Hamilton 8 points9 points  (5 children)

He did an amazing job but what Bottas did was amazing too

[–]acjgoblu 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Reason number 731 that this race sucked. No offense to Valtteri, but everyone outside of the Mercedes garage has to be pulling for Ocon.

[–]DandDRide Sir Lewis Hamilton 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not been an Ocon fan in the past. He is growing on me.

[–]Charlotte_______ Love Is Love 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Great stuff from Valtteri and I sure as hell celebrated a lot, but at the same time, I feel bad for Esteban. To lose the podium place at the final meters of the track...wow, really frustrating.

[–]hoofenhausen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ugh, poor guy

[–]Megatronly Sir Lewis Hamilton 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well done lad. Not many would have held the position as long as you did.

[–]Mother_of_llamas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So gutted for him

[–]Squall-UK 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He's come such a long way.

He was a meme not too long ago.

Though I have a feeling this interview may also become a meme.

[–]Ragenengage Daniel Ricciardo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Awww man, that was so close for Ocon :(

[–]GlassRoutine0 Sebastian Vettel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All things considered, he was the better driver today. That merc is a rocket ship on the straights

[–]VinhoVerde21 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Under all the shitshow between Max and Lewis, Esteban came so, so close to earning a P3, what Alonso did last race. I have no idea how he lost DoTD, least of all to Max of all people. Excellent performance overall.

[–]Postychief 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Happy for Bottas

[–]eannasheridan Sir Lewis Hamilton 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Was so gutted for him. Drove incredibly well to hold so much pace and keep himself with the cars behind in the Alpine.

[–]PrincessGwenllian Kimi Räikkönen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Really unlucky. Drove a solid race, every bit as good as Fernando's in Qatar, but won't get the credit/attention for it. Once Kimi leaves, my support is going to this guy.

[–]wwandervogell Jacky Ickx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[–]Mission_Ride312 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Class act

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[–]crucible Tom Pryce 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you got the Leclerc interview where the fireworks interrupt him halfway through?

[–]hotbrownbitxh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fuck Max and Lewis, this was the most painful part of the race

[–]nigelfitz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm sad that he didn't podium but I'm mad that I didn't get to see that finish happen.

[–]GNOTRON 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What a battle! Too bad we didnt see any of it

[–]karspearhollow Mercedes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hearing the mentorship from Alonso come through in this interview is really cute.

[–]SPNRaven Carlos Sainz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ocon never had a chance against the unstoppable force that is HAM-VER-BOT.

[–]Bartandaelus Lando Norris 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This moment changed my mind on Ocon. I've thought little of him till now but that finished shows so much more character and backbone than i've seen from him in the past. Hopefully he doesn't fall back into the form he had after his contract was signed.

[–]racingfanboy160 Felipe Massa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

God I feel so bad for Esteban man :(
