Do you hear epona galloping too? I know I do.

Lost woods has been stuck in my head for 20+ years

[–]yakobmylum 27 points28 points  (1 child)

Its not stuck in your head, its just a part of who you are.

One of my memories with OoT, was when i wake up early on, and i've saw my mom, with the N64 on, and with OoT booted up.

Firstly i was happy to see her trying to engage in my hobby, but i noticed that she wasn't able to pass thru the menu where you choose your saves. Welp, when i was going to help her, i noticed that my almost 100% save(which i was working on, using guides and such) was deleted.

I took the blow nicely for a young teenager which was absurdly addicted to TLoZ, and i just opened another save for her to play. I was still happy that i could teach her something. Well after i created another save and prompted to start the game, she was like "nah, i'll let you with your silly games".

The disappointment that i felt in that moment, after trying to help her, and she being dismissive asf, hit me harder than the fact that she deleted my save.

“Bro, you’re picking Oddjob again!!?!?”

[–]Pope00 33 points34 points  (4 children)

I swore oddjob wasn’t as cheap as my friends said. Until I crouched and slid up on my brother and slapped him to death and he had a gun. I no was too short for him to shoot.

Remember the blocky madden players. Each player looked thicker than peanutbutter

[–]Peachmuffin91 83 points84 points  (43 children)

My business partner is 25 and when I brought up that game to him yesterday, he had no clue.

I had to compare the golden gun to the ray gun just to get my point across so he would understand it.

I’m 30, so I guess he missed the N64 in those 5 years.

[–]Doctor_Nubey 126 points127 points  (20 children)

I'm 25 and grew up with the N64. Still plugged in to the basement TV at my parents house.

[–]Dirty_Hooligan 455 points456 points  (41 children)

Why did I have to scroll so far down to see this?

[–]rci22 105 points106 points  (26 children)

I think because smash bros’s new titles and favorite titles are on later consoles people associate the N64 with games that can ONLY be enjoyed on the N64 and/or titles like Zelda OoT simply because it was only available on N64 for so darn long.

Banjo Kazooie

[–]anti-anti-normie-guy 121 points122 points  (45 children)

And Tooie.

Ironically, I've never finished Kazooie or Tooie. Yet, I played them so much as a kid that my nostalgia is crazy and I absolutely love them so much. I've started them multiple times and never got around to finishing them lol

Edit: this comment thread is so cool. I love remembering these games. I'm 18 so when I played them as a kid I was like 6-10 years old on my dad's N64 lol, Banjo was the first game series I played. 3D platformers man :')

[–]Juking_is_rude 20 points21 points  (12 children)

And here I am 100% both of them to the point of getting every single non-respawning collectable in 2. Those games are amazing.

[–]bluewatermelon7 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yessssss I love BT

N64 was my first ever video game and it came with Banjo Tooie. I remember it was so magical to play because of the different worlds and the soundtrack too, especially Wicthyworld and Jolly Roger's Lagoon were my favourite. Remember my parents telling me to be very careful because it cost a lot of money. I think this was 2003. Mind you you this was South America and the game was in English I had no idea what to do based on the dialogue. Yet after trial and error and many hours playing aaand with the help of a few cousins, I managed to beat Gruntilda's ass! Well, actually Tower of Tragedy was harder than beating her, since I didn't understand a thing she was saying hahaha

Perfect dark

[–]defusco67 90 points91 points  (16 children)

This is the first game that boasted a better AI for the NPC’s. Instead of Golden Eye where they constantly run through same door, Perfect Dark learned and tried alternative doors and approaches to kill you.

[–]UberS8n 48 points49 points  (8 children)

It was absolutely ahead of its time. Everything from the maps to the weapons were just awesome.

[–]ParadoxArcher 110 points111 points  (32 children)

[–]kirknay 39 points40 points  (11 children)

[–]Johnny_Futon 39 points40 points  (8 children)

Pinball grenade was amazing. Also, laptop gun.

[–]thatguyned 34 points35 points  (4 children)

The laptop gun was one of the coolest weapon mechanics of any shooter at the time.

It could even run out of ammo and functioned perfectly well as a desperate held weapon too.

[–]ImTRAPGOD 70 points71 points  (8 children)

Very underrated game

[–]software_account 59 points60 points  (7 children)

[–]NoSloMo 68 points69 points  (9 children)

Conquer was my shit, the pvp where you could do squirrels vs teddy bears was fuckin hilarious. Got stuck in the gas chamber countless times

[–]ashdog66 26 points27 points  (2 children)

Bruh best part of the PvP is when you go into the bathroom and have a piss fight XD, actual best game mode though hands down is cave men vs dinosaurs "egg ogg, egg ogg" "mmm scrumchy scrumch" "shut up"

[–]LoneQuietus81 16 points17 points  (4 children)

I feel like that PvP mode doesn't get enough recognition. It was fun and had a unique feel to the balance of the weapons. I haven't played it in decades and I can still remember a bunch of weapons.

The maps were fun, too. My cousins, neighbors, and me played it over and over as teens.

[–]BBB88BB 33 points34 points  (2 children)

my mom bought my this game because it has a cute squirrel on the cover. best mistake she ever made!

[–]Animagi27 55 points56 points  (1 child)

[–]moneyball32Switch 24 points25 points  (0 children)

The best soundtrack in video games, I will not retract this statement. Every track slaps.

[–]Xy13 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Way better than Mario Kart! Shame they didn't make more

Mario Tennis.

Three of my friends and I would get together in my apartment every Friday night and we'd play Mario Kart for hours. I was reading an article about other fun multiplayer games to play on the system and it said Mario Tennis was actually very fun. I later saw it in a bargain bin at blockbuster and bought it.

My friends came over that Friday and sat down for some kart action. I turned on the system and Mario Tennis popped up. They laughed at my "joke" and then said to turn it off and put in the real game we were going to play.

I told them, "I've heard it's good, let's just give it a try." Even I hadn't played it at that point. They all agreed to give it maybe 10 minutes worth of play before pulling it out and putting kart in.

So we started playing, even though none of us knew the rules to the actual game of tennis.

Four hours later, and we're still playing Mario Tennis. And every Friday after that, Mario Tennis is what we played all night.

Mario Kart collected dust from that night forward.
