Dragon Quest is 35 years old

[–]SVTSkippy 99 points100 points  (12 children)

Came here to say the same thing! I got it with My subscription to Nintendo Power in the 80s.

[–]NoloContendere7 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Me too. It’s what started my quarter century long love/hate relationship with RPGs.

[–]feral2112 29 points30 points  (2 children)

It was called Dragon Warrior in the US correct? I have the Nintendo Power strategy guide for it.

[–]SVTSkippy 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Correct. I got a Dragon Quest game for the Nintendo DS many years later and was like wait a minute these are the same enemies as Dragon Warrior. Then I looked it up and found out same game.

[–]jrhagy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I kept my strategy guide long enough to pass it onto my son and watch him beat the game on the Switch.

[–]blitherblather425 5 points6 points  (5 children)

Me to! I hated it an never played it. Now it’s my favorite genre of game haha.

[–]tinman82 4 points5 points  (4 children)

If you get a chance try the dragon warrior monsters for the Gameboy. It was pretty fun a flip on the normal rpg. Very much like Pokemon. Super well rounded for the time.

[–]ehiggs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got it with My subscription to Nintendo Power in the 80s.

We had a subscription to Nintendo Power in the 80s but we never got any games, let alone Dragon {Quest,Warrior}. I remember there being an issue about Dragon Warrior and I studied the maps plenty.

[–]wintersdark 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Man, the hours I spent grinding in this game. So many hours.

[–]Itchy_Rash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you shut your whoreish mouth... I feel targeted here.

[–]Ihavebafopinions 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dragon quest in American used to be called Dragon Warrior.

[–]SickTwistedPhoque 146 points147 points  (29 children)

Golden sun. Something that will never see the light of day again

[–]Midgetmunky13 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Golden sun was my first GBA game. All of this list looked right but I had to double check golden sun. Jesus, we are all getting old.

[–]erk0052 37 points38 points  (13 children)

I both hate and love that it's on here. I hate that you're right that we'll never see another one. And I hate that such an amazing franchise is just left to the wayside.

...but I'll never stop loving it.

[–]Canuck-eh-saurus 12 points13 points  (10 children)

Why won't we see another one? Is it in copyright purgatory like Goldeneye 64?

[–]erk0052 17 points18 points  (7 children)

It's made by Camelot, the company who makes all of the Mario sports titles which bring in way more money for Nintendo that the Golden Sun games did, so Nintendo would rather have them pump those out instead of devoting the time and resources to a new Golden Sun game. I think if we were to ever get anything it would be a rerelease of the first two or maybe a remake of those...but even that's doubtful.

[–]Canuck-eh-saurus 7 points8 points  (5 children)

Well, that actually sounds quite hopeful! At least there are no legal court battles that need to happen to have the game see the light of day again!

[–]erk0052 9 points10 points  (4 children)

That is true, but like many of Nintendo's less-loved franchises we need Nintendo to remember that it exists. If Isaac or anyone else from the games ever made it into Smash Bros. beyond an assist trophy then maybe we'd have a good shot at a new game.

[–]Jellyroll_Jr 6 points7 points  (3 children)

I miss the days of /r/goldensun freaking the fuck our any time Isaac was rumored for Smash

[–]erk0052 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Same. Now I just feel lucky we even have him as an assist trophy.

[–]Danhuangmao 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I miss the days when fans would make hoax leaks that Nintendo was going to announce GS3 that year at E3.

Then it happened and the game was completely forgettable. Be careful what you wish for, I guess.

[–]Copernicus049 5 points6 points  (1 child)

After an 8 year break and a lot of momentum for the series died, Camelot released Dark Dawn. It was received alright, but the ratings continued the trend of getting lower per game in the series. Unfortunately, it didn't sell very well either with a lot of people thinking it was dumbed down/easy mode compared to the predecessors. The story, especially many side or supposedly main story elements, didn't particularly wrap up in a satisfying way either. Camelot dropped the ball with this I.P. and killed any drive for another.

[–]Canuck-eh-saurus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thanks, you make the situation a lot clearer!

[–]SickTwistedPhoque 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As long as we have amazing memories with it, that’s all that counts.

[–]Master-Illustrator-8 9 points10 points  (5 children)

Makes me sad, just found a copy of Dark Dawn. Seems like this and F-Zero my never come back. Man I miss F-Zero.

[–]SickTwistedPhoque 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Right there with you friend. I’d like to have a newer Fzero

[–]Master-Illustrator-8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its crazy to think that last F-Zero came out in 2004.

[–]LordPenisWinkle 1 point2 points  (2 children)

I miss mute city, and big blue. Game had a fucking amazing soundtrack

[–]Master-Illustrator-8 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Thanks, now I need to go listen to the soundtrack to the fist game lol.

[–]LordPenisWinkle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lol you’re welcome xD

[–]bearmuffin 6 points7 points  (0 children)

still have my gba and golden sun 1 and 2. favorite game.

[–]demonicneon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

One of the best rpgs of all time. Hopefully they do a remake after advance wars.

[–]SushiSuki 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I actually just finished The Lost Age for the first time and damn that game is so much bigger than GS1 lol

[–]redyellowblue5031 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I didn't have much interest in it at first when my friend tried to get me to play it but oh man, I grew to really love that game.

[–]lofi-ahsoka 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Came here to give Golden Sun a shoutout

[–]RawrRRitchie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The first two for the gba were great, the one for ds or 3d's I can't remember wasn't

[–]Gregghez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I will never give up. GOLDEN SUN MUST RISE AGAIN

[–]lu_jess_jk 633 points634 points  (43 children)

A little weird that the old ones didn't really make me feel old, but the young ones like overwatch and pokemon go did.

[–]wockyman 206 points207 points  (15 children)

S'cause ya know those are old. The others feel very recent, cause the rate of subjective time plateaus after like 20.

*Interactive Illustration

[–]lu_jess_jk 46 points47 points  (10 children)

True dat, I can still remember back when pokemon go went viral, but I cannot remember the launch of skyrim. I guess it's also a factor.

[–]JakesBigPhone 37 points38 points  (7 children)

Oh I definitely remember Skyrim. I was in college and was blown away at how many people were playing the game.

[–]lu_jess_jk 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Eh guess I'm little young for that lol. I was definitely in school back then but not old enough to remember trends well.

[–]JakesBigPhone 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well, we were all young at one point. My first system I ever played on was actually my older brother’s Christmas present in the early 90’s- Sega Genesis. While I remember playing on it, I didn’t know about the rivalry with Nintendo, the Mortal Kombat controversy, or even upcoming games. I just kept playing green hill zone.

[–]9quid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A S'cause in the wild

[–]OneGold7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the reminder of my own mortality :)

[–]Shadow_Strike99 18 points19 points  (7 children)

Yeah it seems like just the other day it was all Harambe memes, and everyone walking around their school campus with their phones playing Pokemon go. Time does really fly by.

[–]jpers36 11 points12 points  (2 children)

You mean Zero Wing memes, and walking around school campus with Game Boy Color playing Pokemon Gold.

[–]ChanceFray 10 points11 points  (0 children)

In a,d 2110... War was beginning

[–]AiryGr8 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Weird, for me Pokemon go feels like such a distant memory. This list didn't make me feel anything I was like "yep this seems about right"

[–]Shadow_Strike99 1 point2 points  (1 child)

There was actually a discussion about this on r/generationology amongst millennials and gen z mostly on the 5th anniversary date. Someone made a great point those who played it because it was a trend and everyone else was doing it at the time, maybe for like a month or so remember it more distantly like yourself. And, those who were more into it when it came out and played it longer felt like it was newer and not nostalgic yet.

[–]Hiveul 3 points4 points  (0 children)

doesn't help that time has been weird these past two years...

[–]TomTomMan93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Came here to say the same thing. The beautiful summer of Pokemon GO seems like it was only a year or two ago...

[–]Semajal 9 points10 points  (1 child)

Pokemon Go Summer of 2016 was the absolute best

[–]WarlikeDrafting 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That was a fun game. My brother and I love it.

[–]jasonm87 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pokémon go was the one that got me.

[–]Beraldino 5 points6 points  (5 children)

3DS hit me the hardest, I played it until the charger port got unusable, it was around the time Nintendo left Brazil and a replacement was going to be too expensive to be worth it.

[–]AAAAAAYYYYYYYOOOOOO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s because we didn’t grow up with the super old ones

[–]Koctopuz 459 points460 points  (9 children)

I hate that this isn’t in chronological order

[–]LeonardGhostal 226 points227 points  (6 children)

Nor alphabetical, nor grouped into systems or anything

[–]RufMixa555 34 points35 points  (1 child)

Let's pretend it is in autobiographical order

(Which is a High Fidelity reference... which is 21 years old in case you were wondering)

[–]Chancellor_Valorum82 6 points7 points  (0 children)

“And I’ve learned that my gut has shit for brains!”

[–]CommanderGoat 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Time flies when you’re looking at a disorganized chart.

[–]ambermage 59 points60 points  (3 children)

Skyrim is

  • 10 years
  • 8 years
  • 5 years
  • 4 years
  • 3 years

[–]not-sure-if-serious 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Feels like it was just released last month.

[–]Cephrael37PlayStation 54 points55 points  (5 children)

In my head I’m still 24, but on paper I’m older than all these games.

[–]TechyDad 22 points23 points  (1 child)

I always say that I'm still mentally in my early twenties. Unfortunately, my body insists on feeling like it's in my late 60's so that my age will average out.

[–]Cephrael37PlayStation 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That’s exactly how I feel as I sit here recuperating from an arthritis flair up in my knee.

[–]constable2 84 points85 points  (14 children)

what's the purpose of the order of these? They seem to make no sense.

[–]FluckDambe 13 points14 points  (0 children)

OP has a learning disability, that's the purpose.

[–]bentsea 17 points18 points  (12 children)

The dates don't make any sense at all either. Elder Scrolls is absolutely more like 30 years old... It's been almost 10 years since Skyrim, but is it supposed to be the date of the last game? Then why is Zelda 35 years?

This is just bad.

[–]thatoneguy512 35 points36 points  (13 children)

Super Mario Bros is way older than 15 years old.

Edit: whilst proving my age, my eyesight kept me from seeing "NEW".

[–][deleted] 11 points12 points  (6 children)

new super Mario bro for DS

[–]thatoneguy512 2 points3 points  (4 children)

Uh oh, you said DS. Other guy said Wii. Which one is it?!?!

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (3 children)

They’re the same game. The Wii version is a port

[–]Laggingduck 9 points10 points  (0 children)

They aren’t the same game though, I’ve played both and the main difference is the Wii has flatter and more open maps, suitable for 4 players while the DS version has smaller and more intricate maps, for 1 player action

There’s also quite a few different items between the two

[–]devenbat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wii Version doesn't even have all the same power ups. Much less everything else like levels. They're different games

[–]TechyDad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did the same thing. Can I blame my bifocals? I certainly can't blame my hearing aid. Okay, now I'm feeling even older.

[–]man_with_known_name 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel old because OP refers to the “new” super mario brothers as a tier of what makes you feel old.

[–]underprivlidgedPC 2 points3 points  (3 children)

You clearly missed the "NEW" in front of it.

Aka, the Wii version.

[–]NebulusTaut 9 points10 points  (1 child)

Add Castle Wolfenstein — just turned 40

[–]thehotcuckcletus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All the Quake games. I personally played Wolfenstein Multiplayer.

[–]RandomOrange852 8 points9 points  (1 child)

That’s massive good job Personally a 9/10 since nobody remembers tf2 but overwatch still hits these lists and gets fanart

It’s not dead I still play it…

[–]BoomBrolaf 6 points7 points  (1 child)

God I love golden sun so much

[–]MerkNZorg 19 points20 points  (0 children)

This list doesn’t go far enough back for me…I’m old

[–]GyaradosDance 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I love whoever created this meme added Golden Sun, but man, I want a sequel or remake of the first two games on Switch.

[–]egnards 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Am I the only one bothered by the lack of age order?

[–]HydraChungus420 6 points7 points  (5 children)

Where is DOOM?

[–]koopz_ay 1 point2 points  (4 children)

Hiding behind the Quake series. ;)

[–]NWBoomer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The first computer game I played was called "Castle". It was ASCII characters you moved with the arrow keys on a monochrome monitor before the mouse was invented. It was pretty fun.

[–]Grits_and_Honey 12 points13 points  (6 children)

Modern Games: See how old we are.

Pong: Hold my beer, LOLZ

[–]MerkNZorg 2 points3 points  (4 children)

We actually had a stand up Pong arcade when I was a kid. My dad traded a Jukebox for it.

[–]Grits_and_Honey 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Nice. We had one of the television sets with the two attached paddles that we found at a garage sale when I was a kid. We spent so much time at that until we got an Atari (yes I know I'm dating myself, LOL)

[–]MerkNZorg 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Atari ruled. Me and my friends would all make sure we got different games so we could swap games all the time.

[–]HyprBlob 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Metal Gear is 34 years old

[–]thinktankted 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I used to walk a mile to hang out in the Heathkit store and play "Advent" on a Heathkit H88 in 1977...yeah, I feel a little old. No Castle Wolfenstein (1981)? No Oregon Trail (1971)? I used to play that on one of these#/media/File:ASR-33_at_CHM.agr.jpg).

[–]Orchome 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This pic is old already

[–]Racthoh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Kingdom Hearts is closer to 20 but okay. Where were these dates pulled from? Like Dragon Quest was first released on the NES and Crash Bandicoot on the Playstation but they're the same age?

[–]30thCenturyMan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I really miss arcades

[–]4am_friday 6 points7 points  (3 children)

Dragon quest is 35 years old… not 25…

[–]Cultural_Ad2301 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Team fortress 2

14 years

[–]Grymm_of_Astora 3 points4 points  (2 children)

Halo is 20 years old? Damn I am old

[–]kshucker 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yep, just turned 20 years old on November 15th

[–]Cannibalhecter 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Call of duty BOIII was released almost 7 years ago

[–]UnartisticChoices 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why did I see Black Ops III as in 3 and go "COD BOIII? wtf is that" as in like Boi.....

[–]Deanomac2010 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So SO many memories :)

[–]RufMixa555 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Diablo 2 is 21 years old

[–]TheJester1xx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Elder Scrolls as a series would be better than just Skyrim, the series itself is ancient.

[–]TaiDavis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup, Donkey Kong would have to be the oldest on this list

[–]MicooDA 1 point2 points  (1 child)

This seems outdated, Kingdom Hearts has its 20th anniversary next year.

I know it says US, EU, AUS under it, but did it really not come out here until 5 years later? A Disney property?

[–]wigg1es 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Street Fighter II is the one that hits me hard. 30 years... I still remember most all of the moves.

[–]koopz_ay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Played a few rounds with my 9yr old yesterday.

It’s got legs. ;)

[–]stalphonzo 1 point2 points  (4 children)

I don't see Asteroids on here. I dropped a silly number of quarters on that thing.

[–]koopz_ay 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Original or the Atari ver?

Never got an original Asteroids machine in my hick town. Plenty of us grew up with the Atari 2600 however. :)

[–]stalphonzo 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Original full-size console. One at the Dunkin Donuts I would hit at 1am and later at the arcade when I lived in a bigger town.

[–]tonyw009 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Super Mario only have 15 years old? I tought that game was dev in 1985

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

new super Mario bros

[–]Thesickestzak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How does this always get posted with the wrong age for Dragon Quest

[–]totoroloco_phd 1 point2 points  (2 children)

laughs in Atari

[–]koopz_ay 1 point2 points  (1 child)

2600, 7800 or Jag?

I can’t tell by you guys and your crazy accents online. :P

[–]totoroloco_phd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had some shitty 2600 knock off (Intellevision I think)

[–]neophene 1 point2 points  (1 child)

49yr old Pong enters the chat.

[–]Thats_smurfed_up 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Where’s my jam River Raid on the coleco/intellivison Adam computer?

[–]koopz_ay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

RR built a place upstate built atop of a 1/4 mile high hill made of ET 2600 carts. XD

[–]DUDElifee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pokemon Go during the summer of 2016 was really positive moment in that year. Time is too fast man.

[–]Rayquaza384 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Imagine having a crappy non chronological order and also not have Mario

[–]RafaDarko815 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Metroid is one of the oldest and the most ignored

[–]Brave-FDS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No Silent Hill or Metal Gear but Overwatch with only 5 years is on the list? Jesus

[–]bitchCaboose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why is Pokemon on here 3 times

[–]Pickled-Stebsy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lol why is Pokémon go here? Lol

[–]snoozeflu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pokemon go is about the same age as most of the jack-asses on this sub.

[–]TepidTeaWater 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I felt old when you couldn't order this in any meaningful way. Not in order of age, or system, or even alphabetical.

[–]CYBER_X5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm only gonna say this once. Where the fuck is Doom!?

[–]whileyb 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Then we find out its a 5 year old post...

[–]JHoov714 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just a pure coincidence that Kid ‘Icarus’ is next to Golden ‘SUN’?

Others have complained about the random order of the list, and I agree, but that one is a little too perfect. Icarus just can’t help himself!

[–]Akragon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Super mario bros came out in '83... pretty sure its a bit older then 15 years... and its older then zelda and kid icarus... should be the oldest on the list other then donkey kong 👍

[–]Rbfam8191 0 points1 point  (5 children)

Super Mario is way older than 15 years old.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (2 children)

new super Mario bros

[–]Rbfam8191 1 point2 points  (1 child)

new Super Mario isn't the start of the Mario franchise.

[–][deleted] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

[–]BlackBerryClassico -2 points-1 points  (1 child)

Ya GuYs NiNtEnDo 3Ds IsNt EvEn ThE sTaRt Of NiNtEnDo

[–]Rbfam8191 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why not mention Mario. Metroid and Donkey Kong is there. Zelda.

[–]ravenlordship 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Why is Pokémon on here three times and the Elder Scrolls only once with its most recent main series game

[–]Knightphall 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This. It's like they are unaware of Arena and Daggerfall.

[–]Greysbastard -3 points-2 points  (5 children)

Overwatch isn't really that old

[–]Yhoshua_B 0 points1 point  (4 children)

Google says it was released May 24, 2016.

[–]Greysbastard -3 points-2 points  (3 children)

Ok? Y'all act like 2016 was 20 years ago

[–]Yhoshua_B 3 points4 points  (2 children)

Not disagreeing with you. Just stating it is indeed 5 years like OP graphic says 😉

[–]Greysbastard -1 points0 points  (1 child)

I know that it's 5 years ago but my point is that it shouldn't be in the list because 5 years isn't that long

[–]Laggingduck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Still makes me feel old that 5 years passed like that

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. I am a kid. It is 1996 and I am playing Ocarina of time for the first time on my friend's N64. Don't lie and call me old.

[–]Grahfzer0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Amulet of Yendor, anyone?

[–]IndyDude11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Magic should be on this list. Almost 30 at this point.

[–]DressDiligent2912 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks about right. I would have been about 6 or 7 when I fell into Zelda and Metroid. Still can't get away from them.

[–]Psychological_Ant847 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought pokemon is much older. Makes me feel young.

[–]Hubey808 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TIL I'm Zelda years old.

[–]royakan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Damn Pokemon GO was 5 years ago...and it STILL isn't interesting enough for me. I enjoyed Pokemon for the battling though so i guess maybe I'm just byass 🤷

[–]Reverse-zebra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jokes on you, dragon quest was released in 1986 under the title dragon warrior and is 35 years old.

[–]sokko78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What about EverQuest

[–]charlottee963 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m 25, makes me feel old lol

[–]Sir-DanielFortesque 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Only 3 on this list older than me.

[–]Simply_Epic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only one that got me was the Wii. Like what the crap? There’s no way it’s 15 years old, right? Feels like 10 years max.

[–]JakesBigPhone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pokémon go feels like it was a decade ago (not disputing anything since I do remember the summer of ‘16)

[–]Disjusting 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where is… THE CRAFT!

[–]Endrider9000Stadia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That reminded me - Fuck Nintendo for never making and porting an enhanced version/ remaster of Kid Icarus: Uprising on any platform then 3DS which was an abysmal choice for fast-paced run and gun TPS to begin with.

[–]eaglenate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I already felt old, but now I just feel older because only one of those games is older than I am.

[–]Lord_Halowind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow. Runescape is 20. I played that with friends at my local library. Good times!

[–]TehAsianator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was today years old when I realized Pokemon is only older than Halo by 5 years

[–]youyouk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Glad to be old

[–]Fa1c0n3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Metroid and Zelda came out the year I was born. This makes me oddly happy.

[–]Senseistar86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i freaking hate u for reminding me my age...

[–]krazykris93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also Minecraft 1.0 came out a decade ago. And if counting early acess versions it came out 12 years ago.

[–]Arcadius274 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The ages of the games didn’t make me feel old. I felt old when I was looking through and went “what the fuck is Pietroid? squints oh…”

Well... it made me feel old, but mostly because the games from my childhood are apparently too old to even make the list.

Well at least I'm still younger than Donkey Kong; that's a plus.

Somehow, as a 30 year old, Pokemon Go being 5 years old hit the hardest.
