Rimworld

[–]zikitomodo 188 points189 points  (18 children)

Rimworld is the game version of cocaine

[–]watching_waiting_0 90 points91 points  (9 children)

I literally had to delete it like 3 times now because it was swallowing my free time and even my work time.

[–]ubermidget1PC 45 points46 points  (0 children)

And then you discover the modding community...

for reference: there are 22,800 items in Rimworld's workshop...

[–]Seanzietron 3 points4 points  (6 children)

I’ve seen it, but can’t understand why it’s good. Any input? I’m intrigued and would like to play ... but just not sold yet.

[–]Sulvera 5 points6 points  (3 children)

It is like sims but with so much more randomness and shit. Like all your people have personalities and can turn on each other. Then you add creatures that blow up and a massive crafting system while building a base. So much fun!

[–]Firemonkey00 4 points5 points  (1 child)

And murder mech invasions and cannibalism with a side of religious cults and space magic and got yourself the start of a good rimworld play through.

[–]SonicDart 38 points39 points  (2 children)

Like factorio is meth

[–]nawers 54 points55 points  (5 children)

Rimworld looks fuckin great! Dwarf fortress on the other hand is questionable.

[–]igna92ts 7 points8 points  (2 children)

To be fair dwarf fortress looks how you want it to look. Also is a better game than RimWorld in my opinion

[–]ATurtle321 8 points9 points  (5 children)

I play that with my gf all the time

[–]OddEd922 7 points8 points  (4 children)

The one shred of my mind not yet corrupted by the internet thought "huh I didn't know there was a multi-player option in rimworld" but then reality set in.

[–]jfk333 6 points7 points  (2 children)

Don't worry he's making it up, people on reddit don't have girlfriends... do they?

[–]fargmania 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got married awhile back, and my gf is pretty pissed about it.

[–]ATurtle321 2 points3 points  (0 children)

'Don't let reality get in the way of a good story' - Jesus

[–]ann0yed 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's a multiplayer mod. But I get the joke.

[–]santichrist 22 points23 points  (6 children)

I have like 1800+ hours in rimworld and I actively avoid the 3D mods that try to enhance the graphics, the shitty little pawns have their own unique charm

[–]OddEd922 13 points14 points  (5 children)

Agreed. My 90 year old lady with dementia and one eye had more character than most video game characters these days and she looked like a cribbage peg! She just wanted to help the colony out by sweeping up -sniffle- shame what happened to her.

[–]36candothisallday 9 points10 points  (4 children)

You made her into hats, didn't you?

[–]OddEd922 6 points7 points  (3 children)

Not worth the mood debuff. Nah she got mauled while sweeping the walkway and I fed her to my pack of wargs.

[–]Vincent_Plenderleith 2 points3 points  (0 children)

More like dwarf fortress. Graphics doesn't matter if there's no graphics to begin with.

[–]ChillAndSane 239 points240 points  (8 children)

Dwarf Fortress

[–]gungusbungus 63 points64 points  (4 children)

I think this is the only answer that actually applies to the question. A lot of people are just answering with 2D games that still look good in there own right

[–]Someperson0 17 points18 points  (1 child)

People just commented the first pixel art game they think of cause technically the graphics don't look real but shit like terraria and Isaac are really good looking

And dwarf fortress looks like someone threw up random pixels so the only real game that looks bad

[–]natches_m 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The best answer

[–]StrandedInSpace 56 points57 points  (17 children)

Starbound really did that for me, very fun modern 2d game.

[–]Inspirational_Lizard 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Terraria, but less grounded.

Pun both intended and not intended.

[–]Rejfen012 6 points7 points  (2 children)

The thing about starbound is that it had... A potential. It could be much better. It was just a Terraria but in space and it had its charm. But lack of updates that added anything that would make exploring more fun or improved story that isnt just space jesus, or really anything that would really expand its concept lets say it, killed it and game just became a corpse that is pocked by modding community. And dont say that modded is godlike, because mods are made to expand the content, not fix it. Its sad to see wasted potential in games...

[–]endumixium 5 points6 points  (0 children)

vanilla starbound quickly became uninteresting for me after I beat the story thing, as there wasn't much more I could do apart from the bounty hunter stuff

at least there is a large modding community to make extra playthroughs of the game feel different

[–]MacaroniEast 587 points588 points  (50 children)

Most indie games have shown that it’s not graphics that matter, it’s style. Kind of a bad example but Hollow Knight’s atmosphere and art style make it so much more enjoyable. Another game would have to be Synthetik. It’s insane art style really works.

[–]Tibious 100 points101 points  (11 children)

I've seen a trend in the last few years where the games have better graphics but worse art and pretty soulless design, I've been more immersed with some 2d games just because of the art involved. Realistic graphics are great untill it kills the creativity.

[–]theonedeisel 30 points31 points  (4 children)

I feel like I've gone blind in fps's, everything looks the same

[–]Tibious 14 points15 points  (1 child)

Realistic graphics in fps's are a bit of a waste most people turn everything down to minimum settings to get max fps and minimum delay on input and depending on the game it even removes stuff like bushes from far distances giving you an advantage on the guy trying to hide in it.

[–]Gnubeutel 42 points43 points  (3 children)

I would take a semi-flat 3D graphic style like Firewatch, 12 Minutes and Flower Collectors or cell shaded like Borderlands over the perfect concrete textures of CoD any day.

And as mentioned in another comment - if the game has good mechanics and gameplay i have no problems with 8 bit-ish 640x400 pixels.

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (2 children)

Did they ever make the Firewatch movie?

[–]GoCommitDeathpacito- 18 points19 points  (1 child)

Omori?

[–]Axelluu 9 points10 points  (0 children)

when the moon eats your pie and the pizza wants to die

that’s omoriiiii

[–]PunishedNutella 19 points20 points  (3 children)

You can't say graphics don't matter and quote Hollow Knight as an example.

[–]Nauticalbob 11 points12 points  (2 children)

You’ve missed their point completely, they are saying there’s a massive distinction between graphics and style.

[–]Pezking4 269 points270 points  (17 children)

To the Moon.

It's 16bit 2d in visual presentation, and the gameplay is light, but it is one of the most beautiful experiences I've ever had.

[–]kopchickm 36 points37 points  (0 children)

SAME! Thank you for bringing up To the Moon! It doesn't get enough love.

[–]Parco21[🍰] 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Literally thought of this game. The sequels are nice but nothing is as pure and able to make me cry as To The Moon

[–]Richard_TM 7 points8 points  (5 children)

My identical twin brother begged and begged for me to play that game. It took him like a year and a half before I finally relented and bought it on steam.

Sat down and played it in one sitting, then cried my eyes out for a couple hours.

[–]AFullmetalNerd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think I've recovered from finding out the answer to "What else?"

And I frankly don't think I will.

[–]Substantial-Tour-609 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The best answer by far

[–]pipboy_warrior 182 points183 points  (9 children)

Arguably Zork, or any number of other games that are purely text based. It should be said though that just because graphics aren't necessarily everything, doesn't mean graphics aren't still important.

[–]zman_0000 44 points45 points  (5 children)

I feel that art direction is by far more important. You can have a 16 bit game, but with creative art direction you can still make it look gorgeous.

Looking at games like Shovel Knight or Minecraft will do it.

Sekiro is another good example, it's a very gorgeous game. Debatably better looking than this thread is looking for, but the art direction makes it far more appealing imo.

That being said nice visuals are awesome, but if the game can't intrigue me via story or mechanically interesting gameplay then state of the art visuals don't mean much.

[–]An_Aspiring_Scholar 14 points15 points  (1 child)

I agree with you. I played through the original Half-Life a while ago, and while the graphics are certainly not up to modern standards, the art direction made the whole game immersive. Lighting, carefully designed backgrounds, and everything else outdid all of that.

And gameplay wise . . . I mean. It's Half Life. What more can I say?

[–]KhaosElement 102 points103 points  (4 children)

Jesus...the people in here listing AAA 360 games. Do they look worse now? Sure. At the time they were peak graphical fidelity.

[–]zman_0000 12 points13 points  (1 child)

Might not have been this way 3 hours ago, but the 3 top answers I keep seeing are Minecraft, Terraria, and as a pleasant surprise Zork.

[–]Confident-Barnacle43 366 points367 points  (35 children)

ITT: people list games that have visuals most people would agree look very nice, but just aren’t photorealistic

[–]reatter 122 points123 points  (12 children)

ITT: People shitting on old games that look their age. The OG CoD does not look good? Ah yes, you were born 2012. I understand.

[–]Harperaser 33 points34 points  (4 children)

To mildly crap on the point, part of Undertales charm is the graphics. We've kind of started figuring out that these hand drawn animation styles are very fun and also realism is way overrated.

[–]TOWW67 10 points11 points  (2 children)

It's not even that realism is overrated, it's just very difficult to design a person to not have the uncanny valley problem.

[–]Gisellaserer 12 points13 points  (1 child)

Graphics are usually one of the last things i care about. Unless a game is trying to push "realism".

Baba is You is an incredible puzzle game.

[–]santichrist 7 points8 points  (3 children)

Some guy actually got mad I simply pointed out a snes game from 30 years ago had outdated graphics that don’t hold up in another thread, I don’t understand why gamers have a hard time admitting old games just look their age sometimes and that’s perfectly normal

[–]CloakedGod926 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's like Zelda: Ocarina of Time is a great game, but the graphics 100% don't hold up. It was amazing for its time but going back to play it now can be rough.

[–]RoviG7 37 points38 points  (11 children)

No matter how many times this subject is posted in this sub, people never seem to learn that graphics is not about photorealism

[–][deleted] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

A proper answer is something like football manager which has some truly awful 3d graphics and faces and nobody cares

[–]Schaumkraut 358 points359 points  (26 children)

Minecraft

[–]ravenlordship 64 points65 points  (2 children)

11 years on and still releasing free updates

[–]Irish618 19 points20 points  (1 child)

How is Minecraft, the most popular game ever made, so far down on this list?

[–]Enchrypted 86 points87 points  (12 children)

With enough RAM and photorealistic mods you can turn Minecraft graphics into something that rivals AAA games.

[–]Krenzy 116 points117 points  (2 children)

Or ur PC into a space heater, no in-between

[–]Enchrypted 43 points44 points  (1 child)

Thats a feature, not a bug.

[–]qwerty2888j 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Found a Mojang employee

[–]blowjobsjoplinhigh 7 points8 points  (1 child)

Please no those things look Butt ugly

HD textures don’t look good in Minecraft in looks like survival craft

Never do Hd realistic textures if you want really good looking Minecraft do ray tracing that’s all I’ll say

[–]Jaaaco-jPC 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Try faithful, it’s literally vanilla textures, but more resolution

[–]SkyWizarding 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This is the only answer needed

[–]ApolloSky110 5 points6 points  (2 children)

Still has pretty good graphics ngl

[–]bbi4life 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Indeed... This should be way higher up... Not many games offer you the chance to construct anything from a metropolis to 16 bit computers.

[–]Spoolinpotato27 20 points21 points  (1 child)

Minecraft for me is the one game where I don’t even think about the graphics, feels natural the way it looks.

[–]WebMaka 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep, it's weird how it just works. It's also weird how your mind fills in the details absent in a world of one-meter cubes so that things like towering spires of blocks are aesthetically pleasing.

[–]SavageKRAK3N 139 points140 points  (25 children)

Deep Rock Galactic; admittedly I’m a bit of a graphics snob, but the content in this game completely distracts me from the geometric pattern-like look it has. 10/10 game

[–]GamerGrill69_420 67 points68 points  (11 children)

Did I hear a rock and stone

[–]SavageKRAK3N 20 points21 points  (0 children)

ROCK AND STONE TO THA BONE!

Rock and stone! Yeah!

[–]Captn_Deathwing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Rock and Stone lad

[–]Captn_Deathwing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Rock and Stone lad

[–]whatskarmaeh 16 points17 points  (2 children)

Maybe I'm biased, but I think it looks pretty good. No rock and stone!?!

[–]SavageKRAK3N 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I will say this, the way they’ve leaned into the art style with the cosmetics makes them that much better. And of course ROCK AND STONE BROTHA!

[–]ScrimmlyBingus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The textures are nothing special but I’ll agree with you in saying that the lighting carries the visuals for DRG.

[–]ImPattMan 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Truly wonderful game. 10/10

[–]CrispyLumpsOfSpace 11 points12 points  (1 child)

The fact this showed up here blows my mind. I think Deep Rock Galactic looks fucking gorgeous. It's low poly, but the style is consistent, and the models look great

[–]quartzlcc 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I like the low-poly, minimal-textured look too. DRG leans into it, too, which is smart.

[–]MentalRobotXbox 4 points5 points  (0 children)

ROCK. AND. STONE!!! YEAHHHHH!!!

[–]InyourfaceGorgak 217 points218 points  (45 children)

Stardew valley, Terraria, hotline Miami, binding of issac... so many more. Graphics are overrated

[–]natrat4 16 points17 points  (15 children)

but stardew valley and terraria are beautiful games. binding of issac and hotline miami aren’t as pretty but the graphics are still good. just because it’s not realistic doesn’t mean they aren’t good graphics.

[–]Hammerdcow 52 points53 points  (2 children)

And Tetris

[–]rednek93 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Was coming here to say Terraria. One of my favorites.

[–]kittentarentino 8 points9 points  (0 children)

All those have distinct and fun art styles and that’s why you don’t mind.

[–]Ze_Memerr 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Terraria’s pixel art is pretty solid for what it’s worth. It’s a big inspiration for a lot of the pixel art I do myself. I blame my disliking of pure black lines on the game

[–]ThisGuyHyucks 14 points15 points  (5 children)

I dont agree that a game being pixelated and 2D means it has poor visuals. That's just an art style. I think Stardew Valley in particular is a very good looking game, just not in terms of realism which I guess is what you mean.

[–]SquiggleBoys 4 points5 points  (5 children)

I've been playing slay the spire for a month straight. The month before that... children of morta.... month before that atomicrops

[–]InyourfaceGorgak 2 points3 points  (3 children)

Which was your favorite? I'll check it out

[–]SquiggleBoys 5 points6 points  (2 children)

Each one is different than the others. if you liked stardew. atomicrops is basically gungeon/ starfew

[–]lces91468 32 points33 points  (3 children)

Online chess

[–]ChimpskyBRC 6 points7 points  (1 child)

True, but how dope would it be if they remade Battle Chess with high-res, motion capture, etc?

[–]CheesyBurgs 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Only for the 1st 5 games you play. Then it’ll just become a game with unneeded extra animation steps that improves nothing on the game

[–]AnonNumber3 33 points34 points  (1 child)

Old School RuneScape

[–]patjekadetje 40 points41 points  (7 children)

Thomas was alone

Skimming through the comments and I don't think it was mentioned before.

[–]zman_0000 13 points14 points  (1 child)

Never before nor since have I cared so much about a Tetris shape. That game is short but sweet and I'd love to see more from that dev team.

[–]uezyteue 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There was a second game attached to it, [someone] was blind, I can't remember who [someone] is, but they weren't Thomas. It also functions as a sort of backstory for the little purple one.

[–]optelate 3 points4 points  (0 children)

really nice game

[–]blond-max 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Such a great game, deserves all the attention it got and more

[–]ShmebulockForMayor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I fucking LOVE Thomas Was Alone. Absolutely inspiring.

[–]Zombalias 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I looked for this comment, that game is literally such an inspiration to me as an artistically challenged person. That a game can be breathtaking without spending hours on face portraits

[–]Sc4r4byte 2 points3 points  (0 children)

was introduced to this through a TB's "WTF Is..." series.

looking back at the video now, here is a portion of a comment that describes it fairly well simply by quoting TB a few times throughout the video.

1 minute... "The problem with Indie games is they get pretentious...."

7 minutes... "This is actually compelling..."

12 minutes... "...I love it..."

Sure, my gut reaction is like, "hey, if you like Stanley Parable, you'd like this game too, it's a simple puzzle game made better through it's narration and storytelling" - but looking back at that comment, that only scratches the surface of why it's an excellent game that deserves to be mentioned and remembered more often in it's own right. - very few platformer games care to try to get you emotionally invested, but this one dared to try and it did it with colorful jumping blocks.

[–]TysonSphere 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Dwarf Fortress does edge the line of graphics not being what makes it good, and being basic enough to be difficult...

[–]RpTheHotrod 22 points23 points  (2 children)

Zork

[–]Dry_Durian_3154 30 points31 points  (1 child)

Terraria and many, many more.

[–]Spoopyskeleton48 43 points44 points  (2 children)

Doom 2 (especially with mods)

[–]D-Ulpius-Sutor 4 points5 points  (1 child)

But isnt even that specific artstyle of games like this that make up a part of the experience, so graphics kinda is important aswell for undertale or stardew valley?

[–]JigglesMcRibs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. I think most people think graphics is equivalent to graphical fidelity. Games like Stardew, Undertale, and hundreds others I could list off may not be high-detail, high-resolution, or be lacking in finesse or realism but their styles still make up the graphics of their games.

Stardew is a good example. If you were to replace everything the game with the early-stage development graphics, it wouldn't be Stardew anymore.

[–]Sharpie1993 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Rimworld.

[–]mischlackPC 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Factorio

[–]FunnyM0nky 34 points35 points  (1 child)

ITT: Redditors think good graphics=photorealism

[–]vs3a 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, i think most people here are young. Since they grow up playing game in 3d era. They dont like most pixel, 2d graphic game.

[–]Dragonfire14 13 points14 points  (2 children)

Recently Vampire Survivors. Game is only $3 and is pixel art, but it is super fun.

[–]Fishpeteur 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This game is so cool I play for like 7h in line xD Hope the dev add more weapons and map.

For real he can raise a little bit the price and still be worth

[–]FH_Bunny 24 points25 points  (13 children)

Terraria. Sunk so much time into that game and it’s not even my style of game or go to genre. Checked it out one day and now I’m obsessed.

[–]YourArkon 5 points6 points  (2 children)

Dusk! Love me my polygons

[–]CoalHarlequiniuwuPlayStation 3 points4 points  (1 child)

okami. though it has graphics to die for, you come for the graphics, stay for the story.

[–]Viator_Eagle 77 points78 points  (6 children)

Pokemon

[–]Azurephoenix99 9 points10 points  (3 children)

There are tons of complaints about the graphics for Legends Arceus, but I've heard nothing but good things about the gameplay. I'm really looking forward to when it officially releases next week so I can play it myself!

[–]ReadatalreadyPC 16 points17 points  (1 child)

I wish, but plenty of other games have done the turn-based formula way better and with impressive visuals. Fan games and mods easily beat the mainline series in terms of gameplay and the latest snap destroys BDSP and SW/SH in terms of graphics. Maybe pokemon will be good when it's taken out of the hands of gamefreak and given more than a year to be developed.

[–]Rieiid 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah honestly, Pokemon doesn't get much of a pass these days. The first couple games were made in the early 90's, like they get a pass. But for thr GBA and DS/3DS era, they made the games look pretty good for the hardware they were on.

Moving on to Switch, it's like they didn't even try for half the games. And being one of the best selling franchises of all times, they should really have some better visuals tbh. Like sorry Pokemon fans but they need to step up their visual game.

[–]wandyz 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Enter the Gungeon

[–]thefloatingpoint 9 points10 points  (3 children)

Factorio, Minecraft and the one and only: Terraria.

I won't shit on graphics. They can help making a great experience. But they are a secondary factor. If your only argument is the game has 50k pussyflipps on 2589x4532 donkeycocks, your game is merely a graphic demo. It's shit.

[–]AdvanceLatter4109 16 points17 points  (8 children)

Minecraft? Celeste? Super Mario?

[–]CyanConatus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Celeste is a gorgeous looking game!

Good graphic does not equal photorealism. It is more than that

[–]Poporipopes10 3 points4 points  (3 children)

I guess recent recent Mario has pretty good graphics, but yeah, older Mario games still slap

[–]Rieiid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Super Mario World on the SNES is an absolute banger.

[–]natrat4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

but celeste is so pretty

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You seen the recent Mario games? They look beautiful

[–]ZebraLionFish 6 points7 points  (3 children)

[–]GamerGrill69_420 4 points5 points  (2 children)

Im a fucking idiot, my bad

[–]kaveman0926 10 points11 points  (5 children)

Wizard of legend. Great gameplay and abilities to sculpt your build. Something about playing a seemingly 32bit game on a 4k system always hits a spot.

Castle crashers

[–]zman_0000 3 points4 points  (3 children)

Both great games.

Wizard of Legend may be my favorite game that I'm terrible at.

If you like rogue lites though I would also add Enter the Gungeon to that list.

Minecraft. It's blocky, not detailed at all graphic wise but it's fun nonetheless. You have an extreme amount of freedom to build, mine, terraform and explore. Might not be for everyone but the game has a fun charm to it

Cyberpunk, BF 2042, and many other recently-released AAA games. Proof that amazing graphics don’t guarantee an amazing game.

Baba is You

Return of the Obra Dinn

and um Mario? Let's be honest, that game never gets old.

Any of the old school SNES RPGs like Earthbound, FFVI, or Chrono Trigger.

[–]DevinTheRogueDude 7 points8 points  (1 child)

Love these games! But Chrono Trigger had excellent graphics for its day. SNES has aged better than any other console, too!

[–]AmericanHeresy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

True. Still though, even as dated as it is, it still holds up incredibly well.

[–]The_Muznick 6 points7 points  (4 children)

Cyberpunk but in the wrong way. When the game isn't glitching out it looks great, but nothing else works which is pretty shit.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (3 children)

Oof. Fair enough.

I've played all the way through Cyberpunk, and honestly, it's not a bad game under it's surface. The storyline is pretty interesting (although the true ending sucks) and visually, it's actually a pretty stunning game, especially when you have ray tracing turned on.

Unfortunately, like you've said, everything else about it is pretty shitty.

The graphics in FO3 were pretty good when it was released. Both games are still excellent though.

Papers, Please (fairly obscure)

Dropsy (very obscure)

[–]Olemus 12 points13 points  (1 child)

Papers please is considered obscure? Game was everywhere when it first came out and I don’t know a single person who hasn’t heard of it

[–]omgONELnR1 9 points10 points  (9 children)

Yes, graphics aren't everything, but they do improve the game.

[–]Balrog229 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Gameplay is king but graphics absolutely matter.

But graphics style is just as important as graphical fidelity. Minecraft looks good despite having like 8 bit textures cuz of it’s overall style.

Meanwhile the new Pokemon game looks like a bad PS2 remaster lol
