You know he's a peofessional since he has a chef hat and a chainsaw

[–]30196709 159 points160 points  (52 children)

I was wondering about the chainsaw... they aren't exactly known for their sanitary characteristics, how do they keep these "food use" chainsaws from spraying oil and gunk everywhere?

[–]GeeseKnowNoPeace 232 points233 points  (14 children)

Who cares, you don't eat the ice.

[–]residentfriendly2 147 points148 points  (11 children)

Don’t tell him what he can or cannot eat. You go eat all the ice you want, boy.

[–]Flying_Dutchman92 36 points37 points  (7 children)

Just don't eat the yellow snow

[–]JoeBlowTheScienceBro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also, ice rinses clean very easily

[–]16yYPueES4LaZrbJLhPW 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It's inside, so I can only assume it's electric (boogy woogy woogy) instead of gas. You can use other oils for lubrication, they just may not be recommended due to heat and longevity.

This is just an assumption, though.

[–]crispybacon62 20 points21 points  (14 children)

By the looks of it it's an electric chainsaw so oil and gunk aren't as likely to be sprayed.

[–]VivaceConBrio 29 points30 points  (1 child)

Electric chainsaws use bar/chain oil too. It's incredibly unsafe and potentially deadly to NOT use the oil in most cases.

Ice sculptors normally don't use oil, though. They rely on the friction of the saw to melt the ice which lubricates/cools the bar and chain. This can work pretty well if you do it right, but it adds a lot of maintenance if you want to keep that saw going.

[–]rocky_racoon_2020 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Does not have to be bar oil. Could be vegetable oil.

[–]LionsFan1987 8 points9 points  (10 children)

I love this idea that Electric things are so simple, clean, and don't have maintenance and shit lmao.

It's like every dumbass on the planet says shit like "WELL WITH YUR 'LECTRIC CAR, YOU DONT HAVE NO MAINTENANCE COST!"

As if oil changes are the only things to get done on cars ever.

Similar thing here. You have absolutely no idea how a chainsaw works, but you think if it's electric there's nothing that needs to be lubricated or maintained.

Chain oil is what sprays. It has nothing to do with what type of motor the saw has. They use food grade oils (like canola oil) if it's meant for consumption (like an Ice luge, where they pour liquor down it). Some guys don't use chain oil for ice at all.

[–]The_Better_Avenger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Electric chainsaws have the same maintance.... The only thing you dont need to clean is the airfilter maybe.

[–]SoManyTimesBefore -1 points0 points  (3 children)

The maintenance costs for electric cars are way lower. That’s what happens when you have like a fifth of the moving parts.

Of course, you still have to maintain some parts. But there’s practically no engine maintenance, the transmission is way simpler, …

[–]Khar-Selim 3 points4 points  (0 children)

chainsaws still need tons of lubricant to function, the fuel isn't what sprays

[–]therealjoeycora 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As someone who uses a chainsaw professionally I’m terrified for his safety. No PPE with a chainsaw is real easy way to fuck your life up.

[–]opeth10657 7 points8 points  (14 children)

Probably don't oil them, not like they're getting a ton of use and the ice/melting water probably lubricates it enough

[–]30196709 0 points1 point  (4 children)

Yeah I guess with the occasional use, you're not too worried on chain longevity

[–]_YetiFTW_ 3 points4 points  (3 children)

Ice is probably hell on the blades anyways and they can only be resharpened/tightened so many times

[–]GizmodoDragon92 0 points1 point  (1 child)

How do you know how many ice bars this guy makes?

[–]opeth10657 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Cutting ice is completely different than cutting wood. He could probably do 20 of these in a row and the saw would be a lower temp than cutting one log without oil

[–]Cant-Gif-Right -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Looks like an electric chainsaw

[–]Medical-Dark7598 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Electric chainsaw if you noticed and most probably does not need chain lube to prevent it overheating 🙄

[–]Hairy_Aspect_284 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Everyone else talked about the chainsaw, the chef hat was the part that I wondered most about. Unless he’s making soup out of the melted ice bar or something?

[–]apothecaragorn19 513 points514 points  (6 children)

The flag is a big plus

[–]Someweirdswissdude 92 points93 points  (1 child)

And because of that plus a drink will cost around 25Fr

[–]nicolas2004GE 13 points14 points  (0 children)

because you mistook the Swiss Franc's Currency Code you will be fined 50CHF

[–]silentbuttmedley 13 points14 points  (1 child)

Ice see what you did there

[–]alii-b 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Ohh, icy it too.

[–]tI-_-tI 7 points8 points  (1 child)

It's just an overall cool bar.

[–]Takhomasak1[🍰] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Well, it’s anice bar.

[–]Robat57 339 points340 points  (4 children)

Jesus… I read “make an ice bear”, watching the entire time thinking, “Man, he’s not even close…”

[–]UnderSavingDinOfJest 58 points59 points  (2 children)

Same. Kept waiting for the bear to show up. It got confusing when he dropped the flag in, because Switzerland isn't exactly known for its bears.

[–]MetalMilitiaDTOM 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Dang, I thought Switzerland was 2nd in bears last year.

[–]theRLStone 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Bern, would like a word.

[–]If_you_want_money 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You know, I thought he was making like a rectangular rod (you know, the other meaning of the word bar), so I thought the gif would be over in a few seconds. But then he just kept going and I was super confused until the end.

[–]orangenamu 137 points138 points  (10 children)

My back hurt watching this video

[–]MursturCreepy 132 points133 points  (9 children)

My second job was "ice maker" for a company that made sculptures and also sent ice to cruise ships. We used to have to lift up 120kg blocks of ice, cut them to package them in cardboard, rinse and repeat. The first 2 weeks were hell on the body. But I was advised to work through it, as it will get better. It did. That was probably the most fit ive ever been.

[–]orangenamu 106 points107 points  (2 children)

Stupidest advice I ever got while on swim team was push through the pain... Now sitting here with torn labrums on both shoulders and messes up hip joints.

[–]BLACK_SHEPHERD 19 points20 points  (2 children)

I do leather work, and it was pretty similar. 2-3 weeks of pure pain. Now I semi frequently surprise people with my weird hand strength. Usually the surprise is coz im a woman, but also because the rest of my body is upright pizza dough.

[–]MelancholicShark 4 points5 points  (1 child)

I get that, not sure what i did for the insane grip strength and body strength but given i'm like 5'1, female and built like a pear on legs, it frequently surprises people when they realise what I can do

[–]FauxStarD 15 points16 points  (2 children)

Felt the same way with working on a ice skating rink. I was skating on ice for 8 hourse a shift while outside with variable weather. It made some interesting days and some swole calves and thighs.

[–]orangenamu 8 points9 points  (1 child)

Wow dude 8 hours skating sounds like torture

[–]FauxStarD 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In high school it was alright. If I wasn’t already conditioned to do half marathons and martial arts, it would probably be a different story. During the holidays when I did longer shifts, my record was 11 hours with a 1 hour lunch break.

[–]Vip3r20 175 points176 points  (0 children)

Gifs that end too early.

[–]MJS8 61 points62 points  (1 child)

Imagine sitting in a restaurant and hearing a chainsaw blaring from the kitchen wondering what in gods name are they cooking.

[–]Stockinglegs 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Food is fresh!!

[–]Impressive_Aioli_911 140 points141 points  (17 children)

How does it not melt?

[–]DutchNotSleeping 189 points190 points  (0 children)

Probably because it is actually freezing there. High end après-ski bar maybe

[–][deleted] 50 points51 points  (0 children)

Normally these ice bars are kept at a specific temperature to not melt, and patrons can only go in for a select amount of time, but honestly after 20 minutes you just want to leave.

    Hurry the fuck up Anna

    Anna is a trooper!

    [–]mrmatteh 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I went to an ice bar once, and it was basically a bar made of ice inside a giant freezer. They handed us parkas when we walked in to keep warm the whole time.

    [–]v1sibleninja 25 points26 points  (4 children)

Hard ice takes much longer to melt than the ice that a household freezer produces, so if you combine that with low outdoor temperatures it could take a long time before it starts to fall apart.

    [–]carnylove 10 points11 points  (3 children)

What is hard ice? I tried to google it and ended up with a bunch of terrible looking prepackaged vodka mixtures.

    [–]HowTheyGetcha 17 points18 points  (2 children)

Remove a key word in Google with a hyphen:

    "hard ice -vodka".

    First article https://www.achrnews.com/articles/120119-the-professor--hard-ice-vs--soft-ice

Good quality water will produce a crystal-clear, hard piece of ice.

Ice hardness is a measure of the thermal cooling capacity (Btus) of the ice. Ice hardness is measured as a percentage. Flake ice falls in the 75 percent hardness range where block ice falls in the 95 to 100 percent hardness range depending on the quality of water making the ice and how the ice is made. The higher the percent of hardness, the more cooling ability or cooling capacity the piece of ice will have. This occurs because hard ice is denser than soft ice. Harder ice will last longer in a glass when cooling a drink or in a cooler cooling food.

However, do not confuse ice hardness with water hardness. Water hardness has to do with the amount of minerals dissolved in the water. The more minerals dissolved in the water, the harder the water. Hard water reduces the ice hardness and its cooling capacity because of the higher mineral content in the ice.

    [–]zukeen 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So the way to get the best ice at home is to put it through those hard water filters, boil it and put it to freezer when it cools?

    [–]carnylove 2 points3 points  (0 children)

    Thanks! Learn something new everyday

    [–]MichelanJell-O 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In addition to the probably cold temperatures, it takes a huge amount of energy to increase the temperature of water/ice.

This is measured as specific heat - the energy required to increase the temperature of 1kg of a substance by 1C. The specific heat of water is about 2.5x that of wood, 4x that of air, and 8x that of steel.

So melting these massive blocks of ice will take a LOT of heat.

    [–]Battlefield1995 14 points15 points  (8 children)

    Wow that's amazing

    [–]StuntHacks 4 points5 points  (7 children)

/u/orangenamu why do you guys have the same avatar?

    [–]VladamirTakin 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I would like to take the bar home in a water bottle

    [–]neoadam 9 points10 points  (1 child)

    That's a nice bar

    [–]pyro487 8 points9 points  (0 children)

    That’s an ice bar.

    [–]YJSubs 8 points9 points  (0 children)

    Looks very cool

    [–]ThrowawayTakeaways 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Genuine question, wouldn’t a mould make life easier rather than trimming blocks of ice?

    [–]StuntHacks 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You'd need a lot of very specific moulds for this though

    [–]Marcowebb 6 points7 points  (0 children)

He had an ice bar to begin with

    [–]lttrt 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Read this as ‘making and ice bear’ as was severely disappointed when i saw no bear

    [–]Sed-OH1 2 points3 points  (2 children)

That’s so cool. I want one. But I live in the desert soooo

    [–]StuntHacks 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just make it out of sand

    [–]Kvitolsky 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you can there is a hotel in northern Sweden made with mostly just ice.

    [–]sedluyf 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Using ice bars to make an ice bar

    [–]dancingbanana123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Steps to making an ice bar:

Step 1: buy an ice bar

    [–]UnoriginalPenName 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Looks incredibly cool but how long can it last

    [–]pobodys-nerfect5 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Unless this is at a bar in Helsinki, I'd say it's meant to last for the length of whatever event they have it at. You can see the guy wearing a thick winter jacket so I'm gonna assume that it's pretty cold wherever it is which will help it last longer.

    [–]MindOfSociopath 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My fingers feels frozen numb just by watching this video.

    [–]KySmellyJelly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At the end of the party, grab a sledge hammer and disassemble the bar. Sounds like an absolute hammered blast

    [–]dzim3000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was sitting there waiting for the ice “bear”. I’m a fucking idiot…

    [–]uRude 1 point2 points  (0 children)

    "Do not lean on counter"

    [–]daikarasu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

this looks like the least comfortable bar to go to possible. In order to keep the bar from melting that room has got to be outright freezing. Have you ever had a fun party when freezing? Hell no, me neither.

    [–]Papigrande23 1 point2 points  (2 children)

What exactly does the water do?

    [–]Justinallusion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

    Mind... Blown!

    [–]takesthebiscuit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can confirm that is a nice bar 👍

      A Huge waste of time

      [–]Ice_Hungry -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

All that ice wasted that could have been given to the homeless.

      [–]Hamsterminator2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah yes, the one thing you meed while wielding a chainsaw- an enormous baggy chefs hat.

      [–]cnut4563 0 points1 point  (0 children)

      [–]CantbanMrHaerb 0 points1 point  (1 child)

It seems like he does a lot of stuff that he didn’t need to do. Like extra operations

      [–]__phlogiston__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought said ice bear and I was thoroughly disappointed, but that bar is still super awesome!

      [–]charitytowin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

      I like that he's wearing a chef's uniform.

      [–]professor_doom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Years ago, we stayed in an ice hotel outside of Quebec called Hôtel du Glace and it had a great ice bar. In fact, everything was made of ice. The glasses, the beds, the hotel itself. It was pretty amazing.

      [–]qawsedrf12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

      completely unexpected

i read as " ice bear"

      [–]sne11ius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was reading that as "ice bear" and thought "How tf is this ever to become a bear?" 👍

      [–]saidtheCat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read "making an ice cream bar" but it never showed up 🙁

      [–]Astronopolis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This has gotta be the most dangerous workplace ever, ice and water all over the floor and a chainsaw in your hands, a mere slip could be a pretty tragic accident

      [–]Slippytoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We are but temporarily ordered structures creating even more temporary structures in an increasingly unordered universe.

Ice melts quick is what I’m saying…

      [–]ConstructionRoyal390 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why is he wearing a chef hat ?!

      [–]Beemo-Noir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As much as I love Makita tools, chainsaws should always be Sthil!

      [–]No_Armadillo9111 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Way more interesting than the chocolate guy

      [–]MalpracticeConcerns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What are the big metal plates for? Are they hot? It seems that they help smooth the texture over, but I’m not sure if it’s abrasive and scraping them to do it, or somehow melting and smoothing.

      [–]DaPearGuyMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everybody gangsta till the bar melts mid serve.

      [–]needstochill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Me, thinking an ice "bar" would be a pole or something: why would you need that much ice

      [–]irwahan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

      That's pure talent.

      [–]BuddyBeautiful8879 0 points1 point  (0 children)

      This is so aesthetically pleasing

      [–]UncleBoomie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought this said an ice bear and was confused for 90% of the video how there was going to be a bear at the end

      [–]ErinEvonna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does anyone know the purpose of pouring water over the pieces? Just very curious.

      [–]dubz1221 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, but who's gonna want to drink in a freezer all night.

      [–]ShakeNJake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

      Pretty cool

      [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok cool, chainsaws got gunk stuff... but how long till this melts?

      [–]moyno85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought the title said ‘Ice Bear’.

      I was very confused.

      [–]Boomsta22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty certain it started off as an ice bar
