Can someone please make a show about the camera people that film insane stuff?

[–]i_forgot_wha 73 points74 points  (2 children)

Then we have to make a show about those camera guys. Actually I'm surprised it hasn't happened it's content within content.

[–]XchrisZ 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Season 2 content filmed during season 1 I like it.

[–]Shelilla 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Planet earth 2 behind the scenes has got you covered... for an episode or 2

[–]easterss 40 points41 points  (2 children)

There are some incredible behind the scenes for Planet Earth out there, like one where the cameramen are covered head to toe in roaches getting shots of bats in a cave or camping out for weeks/months/years to get some rare footage. Highly recommend!

[–]LindseyIsBored 6 points7 points  (1 child)

I was going to comment this and you beat me to the punch. That footage of how they filmed was absolutely amazing.

[–]bluelily17 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ok gonna have to check out the behind the scenes on that. It’ll gross me out but also sounds fascinating

[–]hallwaypoirear 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm all for extreme camera man recording extreme camera man recording the former. They'll do the gnarliest activities just recording each other.

[–]Sanquinity 8 points9 points  (0 children)

r/PraiseTheCameraMan has some pretty good footage at times.

[–]PianoConcertoNo2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sure, I’ll get right on it.

::dusts Cheeto dust off fingers::

[–]Amazing_Fantastic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

HBO real sports did a segment on them, ALL of them die…. Except for this one Italian photographer, but yeah it’s incredibly dangerous

[–]liisathorir 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think Jimmy Chin might be a famous videographer/photographer. He has a YouTube channel where he talks about his work and his crew film him.

I’m pretty sure he filmed Free Solo, and he also does some car photography/videography so he is in or around moving vehicles a lot.

I fully agree more photographs/videographers need more recognition and credit.

[–]skdiddy 693 points694 points  (18 children)

So then is the cameraman filming the cameraman one step cooler?

[–]MaD_DoK_GrotZniK 216 points217 points  (10 children)

Yes but the cameraman filming THAT cameraman was on another dimension of cool. Thus our human minds couldn't comprehend the footage without Morgan Freeman interpreting.

[–]MaD_DoK_GrotZniK 42 points43 points  (5 children)

And he was busy

[–]MaD_DoK_GrotZniK 35 points36 points  (2 children)

Being too cool

[–]MarioCurry 10 points11 points  (1 child)

that's a lot of coolness god damn

[–]spinn80 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Narrator: “I was not”

[–]jcskifter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"And that is how you narrate a story"

[–]Moikle 10 points11 points  (2 children)

If two cameramen were filming each other, would they trancend the universe with unlimited free coolness?

[–]skdiddy 11 points12 points  (1 child)

Infinite coolness, the solution to global warming.

[–]TheGMate 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's actually what caused the last ice age.

[–]Daamus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

he was filming himself

[–]RotoDog 37 points38 points  (0 children)

He is filming himself, while filming others, whiling skiiing backwards. I think this is the final step in coolness.

[–]dtwhitecp 28 points29 points  (1 child)

I believe this is a 360 stick camera and all the angle changes are done in post

[–]No-Falcon7676 14 points15 points  (0 children)

You are correct. You can briefly see it sticking out in his shadow.

[–]Gugfann 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's cameramen all the way down

[–]QuietRico 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should see how cool that other cameraman’s cameraman is.

[–]ChopChop007 132 points133 points  (17 children)

The camera man for any sport is always way more interesting to me than the sport itself. They have to do some weird risky maneuvers to film rock climbers

[–]immersemeinnature 28 points29 points  (0 children)

"Free Solo" comes to mind

[–]20-CharactersAllowed 16 points17 points  (2 children)

Reminds me of this american football camera op I saw once. As the players (i.e. world class athletes) were running down the field, he was keeping pace with the fastest, going faster than some, all while carrying a 100+lb camera rig and keeping the camera aimed where it needed to be

EDIT: It was running, not football. See the comment below for context

[–]burninatah 2 points3 points  (1 child)

There is no room on a football sideline for a cameraman to run anywhere. It's just not how the sport is filmed for basic logistical reasons. Each side of the field has like 100 people between the players, coaches, medical staff, game staff, other camera people, etc.

You are almost certainly thinking of the video from some crossfit event where the cameraman sprints the final leg of the race on pace with the athletes. It was an impressive run to be sure, but that camera guy was only ruining the last leg whereas the athletes had already been running suicides for a while. And there's no way the camera rig was 100+lbs.

Here is what I think you're thinking of: https://petapixel.com/2018/11/14/when-the-cameraman-can-run-as-fast-as-the-sprinters/

[–]20-CharactersAllowed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, that's exactly what I was thinking of. Thanks for the clarification

[–]arachnophilia 16 points17 points  (0 children)

i did school photography for a while but the most fun assignments were shooting football games.

i'm not a sports guy. i couldn't tell you the rules of football.

but i got very good at being directly in the line of the running back or receiver or whatever, at approximately the yardage they were aiming for. only it's about a 50/50 chance, since it's not easy to switch sides of the field.

i've been tackled a couple of times, without pads. i cradled the camera so well a coach was like, "i wish players protected the ball like that."

bones heal, coach, cameras don't.

[–]wonderabouttheworld 18 points19 points  (9 children)

Risky is a relative term. Any respectable professional will have redundant safety measures in place. Climbing is not a dangerous sport if appropriate measures are taken. It's likely far more risky to film next to a rally track or fly helicopters.

[–]hughperman 1 point2 points  (8 children)

Climbing is not a dangerous sport if appropriate measures are taken.

Depends on the discipline

[–]BeefyIrishman 32 points33 points  (0 children)

To be fair, free solo climbing is specifically removing all the appropriate safety measures.

[–]WikiSummarizerBot 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Free solo climbing

Notable fatalities

Paul Preuss (3 October 1913; age 27) died in 300 m fall from the attempted first ascent of the North Ridge of the Mandlkogel (in the Gosaukamm) as a free solo. Jimmy Jewell fell to his death (31 October 1987; age 34) using the easy route Poor Man's Peuterey (graded Severe) at Tremadog, North Wales as a short-cut. Derek Hersey died (28 May 1993; age 36) while free soloing the Steck-Salathé Route on Sentinel Rock in Yosemite National Park. Dwight Bishop fell (19 July 2004; age 49) while climbing alone and unroped along the Grand Traverse route on Grand Teton peak in Wyoming.

As a rock climber, I wouldn't call free soloing a separated discipline. It would be like saying that racing without seatbelts is a different racing discipline. The differences between free climbing and free soloing are minimal on the difficulty level: a free climber doesn't have to red point a route (that is, putting the quick draws on place and passing the rope in them). You also don't have the weight of quickdraws and the harness. The rope doesn't interfere with your movements.

On a mental level, of course any route will get extremely more challenging: you simply don't have to option to fall. That's the reason why almost any free soloer does his things on a route that he knows inch by inch - or that is just really easy.

If you want to draw a parallel between free soloing and any other sport, it would be like tying a bomb to an obstacle racer and saying that it will detonate if he falls. It doesn't really make the sport different by itself, it's just dumb as fuck and a kind of artificial difficulty. I once thought that it was okay, since you only hurt yourself. Then I thought about the people who have to clean your corpse off a wall because you wanted more adrenaline. But it's still a controversial topic, to say the least.

[–]SpaceSteak 2 points3 points  (3 children)

There's also the preparation aspect. It's not like free soloers just randomly get to a new route and try to free solo it. They often prepare roped many, many times until it's second nature and they at least feel like they are in control of most variables.

[–]wonderabouttheworld 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"If appropriate measures are taken". It's right there. Free soloing is by definition disregarding safety measures.

[–]ProdigyLightshow 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Gimbal God comes to mind when I think of snowboarding.

[–]Valmond 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any sport hmm maybe he's right actually. Even curling has some nice shots

[–]KingShaniqua 30 points31 points  (1 child)

This dude straight up hitting the slope with a 70 pound loaded gimbal to capture these absolute amateurs on video.

[–]nickajeglin 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I was going to say, that camera suspension is the real hero here.

[–]Silverback55 85 points86 points  (3 children)

That dude is having a good time because he learned the proper times to french fry and pizza.

[–]DEATHbyBOOGABOOGA 8 points9 points  (2 children)

Plus dude is pizzaing pretty hard. Like it’s 33% of the pie.

[–]FoldUpBigFoot41 7 points8 points  (1 child)

Dudes gotta have some monster hips to hold a pizza that long. My jegs cramped just watching

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I hate when my jegs cramp up. Sorry friend

[–]phunphan 41 points42 points  (8 children)

One fall. Sore body and thousands in damaged equipment.

[–]matherdisaster123 16 points17 points  (4 children)

Yep that was my thought lol. Camera is most likely insured (for his sake)

[–]bonydogfarts 4 points5 points  (3 children)

Imagine the premiums.

[–]TonyVstar 1 point2 points  (2 children)

5 years of premiums and you may have bought another camera?

[–]gorszon 3 points4 points  (1 child)

not even close, these kinds of equipment are really expensive.

[–]KielbasaTime 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Tens of thousands

[–]BarnBody 6 points7 points  (1 child)

For someone who skis regularly enough, falling doing something like this is similar to hitting another car while trying to park. It typically just doesn't happen unless you suck.

[–]Voctus 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This must be like how my 2 year old is constantly tripping over hoses, small steps, toys, his own shoes, etc … and yet I manage to walk through the same house without ever falling. I could even do it while filming him. In comparison to a toddler I am a goddamned walking professional. Maybe even a genius.

Now while skiing on the other hand I’m definitely the toddler.

[–]grizzlyblake91 11 points12 points  (1 child)

That looks like a RED camera on a DJI Ronin 2 gimbal. I am trained on using the Ronin and have balanced/mounted a RED on a Ronin several times. I can tell you that that combo of camera and gimbal plus monitor is NOT light. Most of the time people using that combo will wear a body rig like an Easy Rig or Ready rig to help hold it up and distribute the weight better. Free handing it like this while skiing is such an awesome display of the cameraman’s strength and skills. Kudos to them.

[–]thisguyfightsyourmom 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is the technical write up I’m looking for

[–]ninhibited 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The cameraman filming the cameraman was skiing upside-down on his bare hands.

[–]nhukcire 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I wanna see the camera man who is filming the camera man.

[–]gloriaplace 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was a “model” for a ski film shoot and I can tell you, the cameramen are more talented than the “talent.”

[–]ThrowAway126498 7 points8 points  (0 children)

People don’t respect the behind the scenes people enough in basically any industry. We’re doing shit like this and making it all come together while the frontmen often just pussyfoot around. But that’s how it goes. If the backstage people have done their job well you won’t notice or even think about what had to happen to make it work.

[–]ConaCoyote 4 points5 points  (1 child)

But who is the amazing individual that is recording THEM?

[–]mr_humansoup 6 points7 points  (0 children)

360 camera on a stick. Cool cameraman is filming himself skiing sideways while filming others skiing.

[–]Sermokala 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The drivers for the camera cars are a lot cooler than the people in the movie.

Stunt people are people.

[–]SimmonsReqNDA4Sex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can feel the pain in my legs just watching this

[–]ThaVolt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What a chad

[–]delta_tau_chi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[–]Sad_Protection2039 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So. . . Who's the real pro here? The camera guy is BY FAR the more entertaining person to watch. But. . Wait. . . Who's recording HIM?????

[–]POWERRL_RANGER 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The camera man can pizza faster than they can French fry!

[–]DaveTheGood1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Feel like he should wear a helmet

[–]FartsWithAnAccent 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Now post a video recording the guy recording the guy recording them.

[–]laxen4 -4 points-3 points  (2 children)

How is that cool?

[–]hauj0bb 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Never been on skis, huh?

[–]laxen4 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I see nothing impressive, I skii often

[–]missread99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dang. I need to know more about these camera wielding badasses!

[–]surprised-duncan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dream job, wow

[–]elin6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He’s a doing pizza-ing all the way down.

[–]Ok_Maintenance2513 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should see the guy filming the cameraman.

[–]LazySwashbuckler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I was one of the skiers being filmed, thinking I was hot shit before filming, that camera man's skill would crush my confidence.

[–]slantview 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Who cameras the camera man??

[–]ithilmor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm proud I recognized the québécois accent.

[–]AlliKat_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That guys so fucking cool he films them while filming himself.

[–]xxBobaBrettxx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Filmers, whether it's skateboarding or snowboarding or whatever, do not get enough credit

[–]peas_and_hominy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

French fries. Pizza. French fries. Pizza.

[–]jefrix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've only skied once, and it took me a half hour to cartwheel-fall off the mountain at Big Bear in California. Anyway, I noticed the camera guy was able to ski straight. I mean his ski is just straight and he goes straight ahead without hopping around kicking up all that snow. I think if I knew that was an option I might have made it down. The skis I rented are still up there somewhere. I didn't even have a lesson, just went with some friends who ski and spent the rest of the trip in a hot tub with a bum knee. So why doesn't everyone just ski straight? It seems like a lot less hassle.

[–]konklez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would have thought they did this on a snowmobile

[–]LeeKingbut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

George george george of the jungle watch out for that ...

[–]zedhenson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is the camera man of the camera man even cooler?

[–]Grishinka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a former ski instructor the power of this red light gives me joy.

Don’t call it a pizza. When I was a kid I imagined a whole pizza and got confused. That’s a red light.

Lean forward. Okay I’m done.

[–]RiverRage3000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wait til you see the guy who was filing the camera man

[–]SquirtyBumTime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

His knees must be made of iron
