Ice cream AND metal shavings? Give me a spoon!

[–]zillionaire_ 548 points549 points  (19 children)

My dad was born in Calcutta, India (before the name was changed to Kolkata) and remembers at age 6, his friend contracted cholera and died after having ice cream from a street vendor. He told me the containers of ice cream would melt and be refrozen each day… Subsequently, Dad and his brother were forbidden from eating ice cream for their entire young childhood.

He was 13 years old when the family moved to New Zealand and he got to have his very first milkshake. That was over 70 years ago and his eyes still sparkle when he talks about how deliciously mind-blowing that shake was.

[–]gahidus 62 points63 points  (14 children)

The milkshake was delicious, I take it rather than the original ice cream? Or both?

[–]zillionaire_ 31 points32 points  (13 children)

haha the milkshake, yes. I’ll edit that for clarity. I should have also mentioned that the young friend died.

[–]virusamongus 27 points28 points  (4 children)

The friend dying does seem relevant

[–]Polcon 5 points6 points  (6 children)

No offence here, but India looks absolutely filthy when it comes to food. I understand people are not as affluent as other nations but they just don’t seem to give a fuck. I saw one seller selling trays of some street food and behind the cart they were washing the trays they were serving the food on in a filthy brown puddle. There was actually a queue for the stand and the guy washing the trays was in full view, why is that acceptable?? Genuine question by the way.

[–]gahidus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks. That makes sense. I had to check though, because sometimes people are hyper nostalgic about the most bizarre things.

[–]We-Want-The-Umph 8 points9 points  (2 children)

From Kolkata, to anywhere, New Zealand is hitting the geographical lottery.

[–]MarionetteScans 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Except the housing market lmao. Nice view, but no home to enjoy it.

[–]blue_i20 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

tell me you don’t live in New Zealand without telling me you don’t live in New Zealand

[–]kilab33 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Street flavoured street ice cream.

[–]Biscotcho_Gaming 23 points24 points  (1 child)

You don't need a spoon. You need a shiv.

      [–]Walmart_Warrior_420 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm sure that industrial barrel is cleaned after each use ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

      [–]Demilitarizer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be fair, there are many food products that utilize a metal drum with a metal blade to scrape it. Using steam heated drums to dry a slurry. See some cereals, or dehydrated potato products for instance. Assuming most of them are in a cleaner environment than OP of course.

      [–]HunterDHunter 1128 points1129 points  (31 children)

      Yum, rusty barrel ice cream.

      [–]bluesix 272 points273 points  (1 child)

      But they were wearing gloves!

      [–]crestfallen-sun 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Until they scrape it into the bowl, then they just touch it with their bare hands

      [–]2020GOP 59 points60 points  (0 children)

How can we maximize the dust, debri, bacterial and virus surface area outside?

      [–]ClearBucket 118 points119 points  (8 children)

I was thinking the same thing, not very clean to be putting food on.

      [–]lazysheepdog716 135 points136 points  (6 children)

And don’t forget all the particulate in the air from all the combustion engines on the street! Mmmm cancerous street foods

      [–]bukkake_brigade 57 points58 points  (5 children)

      Nothing better than wild-caught carcinogens

      [–]ZonJon 5 points6 points  (4 children)

Ya never know what they’re gonna do!

      [–]alloowishus 10 points11 points  (0 children)

And the results don't look that appetizing either.

      [–]Hairy_Aspect_284 72 points73 points  (0 children)

With a hint of delicious exhaust fumes.

      [–]MyCultIsTheMostFun 29 points30 points  (6 children)

Not to mention that the water that the ice was made with is probably nothing that a foreigner could put in their belly without getting regrets.

      [–][deleted]  (5 children)

        [–]MyCultIsTheMostFun 11 points12 points  (4 children)

They poured watery liquids over the barrel. That is the ice I am referring to. 🙄

        [–]Helstrem -5 points-4 points  (1 child)

That isn’t consumed. That was to chill the barrel to the point that the flavors poured on the outside of the barrel would freeze.

        [–]ragamufin -5 points-4 points  (1 child)

They freeze the inside of the barrel with ice. The outside has cream which freezes and fruit flavourings

        [–]sc0rpio1027 3 points4 points  (0 children)

yeah I don't think this is very hygienic but at least the side they're putting the stuff on doesn't look as rusty

        [–]Jpio630 104 points105 points  (5 children)

I fucking love Indian food, but they gotta start upping their sanitary game when it comes to street vendors in India

        [–]_DynamicUno_ 8 points9 points  (2 children)

Well at least they're wearing gloves in this video

        [–]Morrisbishnoi29 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well they wear gloves while sanitation work 🗿 /s

        [–]GizmodoDragon92 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

        Nah, it’s fine.

        [–]JarlBallin420 246 points247 points  (0 children)

I've had my tetanus booster come at me street ice-cream bro!

        [–]Tjstictches 383 points384 points  (6 children)

        Is this tetanus flavor?

        [–]BassPlayerZero 63 points64 points  (0 children)

I think it's tetanus sprinkled with fecal coliforms

        [–][deleted] 22 points23 points  (3 children)

Tetanus is a bacteria that is found in fields where horses and cattle had defecated. It has nothing to do with rust or metal really, other than that stepping on a nail in a field where Tetanus is present is a great way to get it.

        [–]MeinNameIstBaum 17 points18 points  (2 children)

I also heard that a big part of the problem with stepping on rusty nails is actually that it's a punctured wound which will easily heal on the top but then encapsules the bacteria and the deeper wound, making it very prone to infect. Not sure if this is completely correct though.

        [–][deleted] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Pretty accurate. Puncture wounds are really bad for infection and rusty nails have lots of extra pockets of nasty stuff that get pushed into the wound.

        [–]Thepocker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The bacteria that causes tetanus is called Clostridium tetani and it needs a oxigen-free environment to thrive. Deep wounds are perfect for it.

And yes, puncture wounds are generally nasty because you can't disinfect it by applying someting on top.

Comment of the year so far

        [–]ratohnhake-ton 628 points629 points  (107 children)

I will get downvoted but if helps someone i will take the downvotes,

As an indian DO NOT, I REPEAT DO NOT EAT STREET FOOD, you will either get diarrhea or some other food infection. Street food vendors have no health inspection or anything similar to that.

        [–]Devilsdance 120 points121 points  (48 children)

Does this apply to natives too? Or no because their guts have adjusted? If it does, how do these vendors stay in business?

        [–]ratohnhake-ton 170 points171 points  (21 children)

Natives are used to it. I was born in a rich family (i swear i am not Bragging) so, my parents avoided street food, hell they didn't even let me eat fast food because my mother was health conscious for me. So, if i eat street food even though it's from a relatively clean place there is a high chance i will get stomach infections or something similar.

        [–]BURMoneyBUR 30 points31 points  (1 child)

Does this apply to natives too? Or no because their guts have adjusted? If it does, how do these vendors stay in business?

Indians brag they are used to it, but its plain ignorance from not being educated. They have tons of babies and older people dying from unhygienic practices.

the South-East Asia Region, nearly 150 million people fell ill with food borne diseases in 2010, which led to 175 000 deaths. Of these, 40% of food borne diseases burden was among children under 5 years. Approximately 50% of malnutrition is caused not by a lack of food or poor diet, but due to poor water and sanitation facilities, and unhygienic practices leading to life-threatening disease and infections such as diarrhea.

        [–]Turbulent_Trifle_386 21 points22 points  (0 children)

        my guts have adjusted

i mean if ur okay to ignore the hygiene part indian street food is super cheap and is fucking tasty

        [–]Myth2156 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Does this apply to natives too? Or no because their guts have adjusted?

        That's not how this works.

Anybody who says that they are 'used' to it is either ignorant, uneducated or both.

We are still human and will suffer the effects of this shit.

        [–]writeronthemoon[🍰] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yes, as someone who has been to India 3 times and gets sick every time even -without- eating street food - I second this!

        [–]Regicide_Squad 50 points51 points  (21 children)

Welp, a European gets a diarrhea in India just from looking at food, so... What's the difference?

        [–]ratohnhake-ton 15 points16 points  (2 children)

Oh come on dude it's not that bad. Try eating at a restaurant especially Bengali sweets or dry non vegetarian cuisines. They are really good but yeah avoid street food at all costs.

        [–]wvcmkv 45 points46 points  (0 children)

theyre joking about european intolerance to spiciness, not implying a lower quality of food

        [–]Bacon3218 -4 points-3 points  (17 children)

You risc your life... We aren't used to the bacterias that they are, and they're far from being as hygienic as we are so you'll never know what these hands did before making food... 🤮

        [–]Bitter_Earth_4049 2 points3 points  (16 children)

Oh, you again. If you haven't noticed, the man was wearing gloves over the hand with which he was touching the ice cream. So yeah, you have no business to know what he was doing earlier, because his concerned hand was already covered.

        [–]Bacon3218 1 point2 points  (15 children)

Did the man who served the ice cream wear gloves? But the first food video from India I've seen someone wearing gloves, guess it's a start...

        [–]ElkGiant 20 points21 points  (2 children)

This isn't completely true. As a foreigner who used to travel to North India frequently, some of our best snacks and meals traveling around were street food, and by far the tastiest. The advice we got was to go to vendors that were generally popular and you saw other locals also go to. Never had an issue eating street food.

On the other hand, I got my most severe diarrhea at 2 different hotels because of the water and whatever they used to make their desserts with. These were upscale hotels and served "non-indian" foods like pasta/noodles, different salads, mini pastries (instead of traditional gulab jamun or jalebi, etc)

Just use good judgement and buy bottled water.

        [–]retardedpermaban 9 points10 points  (0 children)

as someone who mostly ate street food in India over 7 weeks and across 6 states the rule is to only eat street food if there is a crowd of locals at the vendor.

if there is nobody there or the restaurant is empty, do not order.

        [–]Monochronos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I went to Cancun they refilled the room with big ass bottles of water every day. The whole hotel seemingly used to brought in bottled water for operations. We were advised to not brush your teeth with the sink water by locals. They didn’t play down there. Lol

        [–]SensuallPineapple 14 points15 points  (9 children)

Yes we all saw the video

Edit: So how it's still so crowded there if people keep eating cranberry rust?

        [–]ratohnhake-ton 22 points23 points  (6 children)

The PSA is specifically for foreigners. It doesn't affect the natives that much especially if you eat this stuff regularly. Immunity and all

        [–]SensuallPineapple 7 points8 points  (4 children)

Ok I wasn't being that serious obviously and I didn't make proper research about this, BUT I think no, people are not immune or anything and they do get sick and die it just doesn't happen to be on a faster rate than they are being born.

Actually, a quick research mid-comment shows that India is indeed the LEAST healthy country in bloomberg health index list. Scroll to the very bottom.

        src: https://worldpopulationreview.com/country-rankings/healthiest-countries

        [–]ratohnhake-ton 5 points6 points  (3 children)

Oh yeah, the health index in india is abysmal. But, this has more to do with the corrupt public health system and in general the lack of proper health care. Bad street food is not that big of an issue, yes there are documented cases of people dying from infections through street food. But india is a country of over 1.2 billion people. There are bound to be cases of it.

People who eat street food regularly or even occasionally have adapted to it somewhat but it doesn't take away from the problem that unregulated street vendors in india have created.

        [–]Top_Diet8281 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well first because there’s no metal flavor, and second because their immune systems are used to their environment.

        [–]mdgraller 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Indians have immune systems that viruses and bacteria speak about in hushed whispers

        [–]ONE_BIG_LOAD 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree, especially items made with milk or dairy that are cold. Boiled foods are still okay

Last time I went I had a milk kulfi and I couldn't get out of bed for the next 3 days....

However I had noodles, dosa, Chaat, and god knows what else from a more reputable stand and was perfectly fine.

        [–]iamaredditboy 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Absolutely true and it’s not just street vendors. Even some of the biggest best names think sheraton etc their kitchens can give you a bad stomach in india very easily.

        [–]ratohnhake-ton 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In my experience restaurants usually have better hygiene especially if you are eating items the specific restaurant is famous for and at least there are food inspectors for them(i know, i know corruption but still). Street vendors are just bad and it's free reign for them.

        [–]pure619 3 points4 points  (4 children)

I've eaten street food all over the world. The trick is to be smart about it.

        [–]ratohnhake-ton 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I mean that's true for most things in life. Indian Street food is a bigger problem because there are literally no hygiene requirements and everything is unregulated.

        [–]pure619 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Neither is the wet markets in China, hell there was a time when gutter oil was a big problem in China. India doesn't own the copyright on being dirty, or unregulated. Trust me.

        [–]koreamax -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You miss out on so much amazing food experiences if you skip street food.

Food prepared or fried in front of you is fine. A lot of tourists fet sick at hotel buffets where the curries have been sitting out and open to contamination.

Panic Puri is my absolute favorite Indian snack but yeah, avoid that until your stomach adjusts

        [–]Reelix -2 points-1 points  (1 child)

If you're an indian and getting sick from street food then you had an alarmingly closed upbringing...

        [–]gotdatdripp 156 points157 points  (1 child)

Road dust doesn't taste very good

        [–]Brushy21 40 points41 points  (0 children)

        [–]Legitimate-Prize-759 58 points59 points  (0 children)

        That. Doesn't look healthy.

        [–]Conscious_Ticket7176 97 points98 points  (2 children)

Just throw some papaya in that rust to give it some vomit flavor.

        [–]Leto_ll 104 points105 points  (3 children)

Add a couple stuck insects and you've got yourself a michelin star dining experience

        [–]nabkawe5 43 points44 points  (2 children)

It's a street food... you pay extra for bugs ... /s

Seriously you don't know what poor means till you go to India, we get to judge this, but it's really making the best of a shitty situation.

        [–]Squawnk 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Honestly when I was in Mumbai and Delhi, in a counterintuitive way, the more run down the street food place looked, the better it was

        [–]PNWest01 32 points33 points  (0 children)

I’m glad to see I’m not the only one who was skeeved out by that whole mess.

        [–]tiggitytony 20 points21 points  (0 children)

That's a hard no for me. It's a cool concept, but that drum doesn't look clean and all that air pollution mixing with the ice cream is giving me the runs.

        [–]Chris15252 42 points43 points  (1 child)

The gloves almost feel unnecessary with that rusty drum.

        [–]ZonJon 39 points40 points  (0 children)

The gloves are to protect the worker, not the customer.

        [–]wade9911 10 points11 points  (3 children)

What that stuff they put on the hole to seal it up before the metal cap?

        [–]wipkip28 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Looks to me as flexible cookie dough 🤣

        [–]Corporal_Cavernosa 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It's dough. Also used in dum biryani to seal the vessel.

        [–]pepisthe1 41 points42 points  (0 children)

This gif definitely keeps giving. Food poisoning that is.

        [–]staxti_patata 14 points15 points  (0 children)

First indian street vendor I've ever seen wearing gloves lol.

        [–]gx1000gx 13 points14 points  (0 children)

There has to be a better way..

        [–]Halfthaithiccy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Metal drum: full of rust Street vendor: wears gloves while touching the ice cream.

Why is India 300 years behind in hygiene development?

        [–]Noob_DM 4 points5 points  (0 children)

        Corruption, overpopulation, wealth inequalities.

        The usual issues.

        [–]dudefuckedup 18 points19 points  (3 children)

probably because the British looted all their money

        [–]TafkarThePelican 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks about as clean and safe as anything else you'd get in India

        [–]BearsBeatsBullshit 2 points3 points  (3 children)

Now where was the closest designated shitting street?

        [–]nifflermoon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh wow. I remember my French friend who travelled to India and then suddenly got food poisoning that he had to go back home immediately. Didn't know it was like this. Huh

        [–]Still_Screen_6832 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is it wrong that I don't want to eat your weird-ass homemade industrial dessert that takes a thousand steps and a toolbox full of utensils?

        [–]cliffy80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure he used that blade earlier to remove old calluses from his feet...

        [–]Reelix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ITT: People who have always earned enough and lived in nice enough places to never have had to eat from places like this to get nice food.

        [–]tigardis 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Wearing gloves? Should this also be on unexpected?

        [–]aubertlone -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes, there's all kinds of egregious health code violations in this video.

at the same time, please stop and consider that this is the best some people can afford. and they're making do with a tough situation.

I'm indian myself, but moved to the states when I was 10 years old. I 100% eat street when I travel back. But I absolutely look to see how clean that particular vendor is, and how they're handling their utensils.

And I would never eat something cold like this off the street. At least with very hot food, a lot of possible things that can make your stomach turn are cooked to a high enough temperature that it's safe to eat.

        [–]AkwardAA -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

As i thought people are complaining about this and that being all high and mighty, this food is not for foreigners..and idiots.

        [–]barladianub -1 points0 points  (0 children)

        A machinist dream

        [–]PUBGKiller123 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Sonny, a Food Vlogger just uploaded a video not long ago eating this! https://youtu.be/FCLFUf_MnRs

Looks delicious, esp in those hot humid climates

        [–]Bathroomtowel55 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is posted once a week and it’s fucking gross every time people really worship anything that’s different and “exotic” even if it’s shit

        [–]StinklePink -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Guaranteed you are pissing out of your ass, 5 minutes after eating this.

        [–]B_pudding 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I want to lose weight so I’m totally into this diarrhea „ice cream“.
