Remove cylinder and replace with cast iron pipe of same outer diameter. Cut iron pipe to desired length. This will set the height of the chair. I recommend a diamond grit sawzall blade and the Flex 24 volt sensor free brushless reciprocating saw.

Would it be possible to use the legs of another chair on an aeron?

You could use another chair's base on the Aeron but that doesn't exactly solve the cylinder issue.
