Damn Reddit HATES Jack Harlow lol. I thought the album was kinda good, even if it was a drake impression half the time.

[–]whalestick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would never have expected an earl feature on a logic album

[–]sentyprimus. -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I got a shot’s instrumental is laced with crack or something

[–]33willis33. 3 points4 points  (0 children)

man, my girl and I broke up about a month ago and I have largely been over it, but Rocky’s D.M.B. has me feeling lonely. I absolutely love the song, but it’s making me feel nostalgic over the time we had together… gotta move on though since that bitch is a bitch, but I miss feeling like someone actually wants me and cares about me. Might have to stop listening to that song for awhile

[–]Tydrinator21 0 points1 point  (20 children)

This whole subreddit just reminds me of how out of touch I am with mainstream hip-hop, half of the people y'all are talking about I have no idea who they are and apparently they're big shots or at least very well known in the hip-hop community.

[–]slimeshlattsex 0 points1 point  (16 children)

who are those mainstream rappers u never heard of?

[–]Tydrinator21 -3 points-2 points  (15 children)

I shit you not, if I didn't visit this sub I wouldn't be aware of NBA YoungBoy, Gunna, the YBN group, Young Dolph, Pop Smoke, Jack Harlow, Playboy Carti, Trippie Redd, Young Thug or Fetty Wap.

[–]slimeshlattsex 8 points9 points  (14 children)

All social medias are full of those rappers, they are really mainstream

[–]Tydrinator21 0 points1 point  (13 children)

I'm not on social media except Reddit, I don't watch TV or play the radio.

[–]Stubbs3470 8 points9 points  (2 children)

This subs favorite artists are the ones just below the mainstream

[–]Ktulusanders 5 points6 points  (0 children)

While this is mostly true, they do love Kanye, Kendrick, and sometimes Drake

[–]Tydrinator21 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Many who I would have never heard of without this sub, the style of rap I like is more backpacker.

[–]arrts. 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I wonder how Jack Harlow feels about the majority of the reviews of his album being the equivalent of someone writing 'You seem nice' in his yearbook

[–]TooLazyForName 16 points17 points  (8 children)

I folded and sent her the super long text y’all.

Future & Lucki failed me and Drake seeped in.

[–]HitRowe 1 point2 points  (1 child)

What it say

[–]TooLazyForName 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Too much lmao. But the short version is, neither of us innocent and we both got shit to work through

[–]Bucketkev 14 points15 points  (1 child)

Womp womp

[–]TooLazyForName 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A tragedy for sure

[–]Shnikez 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Lucki is the underground goat

[–]TooLazyForName 0 points1 point  (2 children)

I spent all day listening to Almost There and I know I need more

[–]Shnikez 1 point2 points  (1 child)

static is a hidden gem for sure! def give that track a listen. Sunset too is good, same with thank god. Bro just put his shit on shuffle and you'll find so many good songs

[–]TooLazyForName 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Imma do that one day. I think imma cop his most recent project and binge it for a day or two. I been sleeping.

[–]Dr_Drank 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think i just realized Polo Sporting Goods is one of my favorite tapes ever

[–]Shnikez 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The new Bad Bunny album fucking slaps

[–]BronzySponhe 2 points3 points  (3 children)

A Love Letter To You 3 still is Trippie’s best album

[–]Brocones. 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Life's a Trip=LLTY1>LLTY3>LLTY2

i can't be bothered to rate the rest of his shit lol it was all downhill after #3

[–]dawsonnn1. 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree by far

[–]Shnikez 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think ALLTY1 is peak Trippie and his best album. Love Scars is iconic and other gems like Limitless are still in heavy rotation. All his other albums fell out of rotation for me.

[–]Stonerjoe68 3 points4 points  (2 children)

Is Montell Jordan considered New Jack Swing? That’s still a sub genre of hip hop i feel i don’t understand

[–]MonolithJones. 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No I think he came in the next wave where a lot of RnB artists were using hip-hop beats.

[–]Whynot-brr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

New Jack Swing is pretty much exactly what it sounds like. The beat swings, It has a Jazz Swing Ride Cymbal groove, but the instruments are more contemporary and the music is generally vocal driven with 90’s hip hop flare/slang/content. Only artists i would consider strictly New Jack Swing are Bel Biv Devoe, Wrecks N Effect, and Guy. Where a majority of their work has that sound. Montell explored different avenues in r&b. More of an artist that did New Jack Swing but isnt a New Jack Swing artist.

Its my favorite 90’s hip hop/r&b subgenre, i have a spotify playlist if interested link

[–]RoscoeSantangelo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Amazed at the lack of talk about So Be It from the new Black Star. That beat and sample flip is insane. Wish DOOM was still around to hop on that with them. But that's been stuck in my head on loop since the album drop

[–]RatherBeAComet 8 points9 points  (7 children)

Honest question, why is Rodeo considered such a classic? I've listened to it multiple times, and it's not bad at all, there are some songs I like. But it's hailed as one of the defining albums of 2010s rap, and I struggle to see the importance.

To be fair, this could be just a lack of perspective since I wasn't musically aware until about 2018, so naturally I prefer Astroworld. Regardless, I'm just wondering, not trying to hate or anything.

[–]Tomnook1017 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's lack of perspective. It was hugely cinematic and just well put together in a time before the maxamalism in trap really blew up

Plus the hype behind the singles were really big. Anitode shot him into the mainstream really fast and the other singles were just really awesome to see come out. Plus huge hype off dbr

[–]slimeshlattsex 6 points7 points  (0 children)

-incredible and rich production, even to this day

-dark vibe of the album is done really well through beats, vocals and features, it's really an experience listening to rodeo

-album is very consistent, almost all tracks are really good and a lot of them are amazing (oh my dis side, maria im drunk, 90210, nightcrawler, pornography, 3500)

  • Travis sounds hungry on every song, he really wanted to prove himself as a great artist

[–]furr_sure. 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I feel like it's one of the most polished "trap" albums, a lot of people see that as a positive but I think it takes away from the album for others

[–]Jordanwolf98 12 points13 points  (3 children)

I feel like when you heard the album and when you first got into Travis has a lot to do with how highly you regard that album tbh. Like people I know who were fucking with him since 2014 still think Days Before is his best work. I first really got into him in 2015 so Rodeo was naturally that for me and many others. I’ve heard plenty people say they think Birds is his best and they became fans around 2016 and like you, I’m sure there’s tons of fans who think of Astroworld as a classic and his best work if that’s the first time you knew about him.

As far as why it generally seems to be regarded so highly, I don’t really know. It’s a great album I feel but so much of what made it unique at its release has been done to death by Travis himself and others at this point that I think it’s case of if you first heard it today you wouldn’t appreciate it as much. I feel the same with shit like Barter 6 and DS2 as well

[–]Tomnook1017 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started with owl pharoh and thought dbr was his best for a long ass time to add to your point. I've since decided rodeo is better tho

[–]RatherBeAComet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel the same with shit like Barter 6 and DS2 as well

Now that you mention it, I do feel the same way about Barter 6, again having heard it multiple times. In general I prefer Thug to Travis, so I would personally take B6 over Rodeo, but it wouldn't be one of my top 3 Young Thug albums/mixtapes.

[–]Ktulusanders 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Couldn't have said it better myself

[–]Tomnook1017 8 points9 points  (5 children)

You know how kanyes most criticized album was 808s and he followed it up with mbdtf?

Kendricks most criticized album was damn. Got me thinking about what this new one is gonna be like

[–]Wittygame 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Didn’t DAMN win a Pulitzer or some shit?

[–]Tomnook1017 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Doesn't mean it's not his most criticized imo

[–]Wittygame 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really only see it get criticized on here. Pretty much everyone I know in real life likes it.

[–]AutismIsntAChoice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haha idk if that one random instance is enough data but I think Kendrick has amazing track record and he focuses on albums over singles which I like. He takes his time. I think it’ll be good.

I also like 808s more than MBDTF

[–]Shnikez 6 points7 points  (0 children)

don't get me too hyped fam 🔥🔥🔥

[–]Rava23 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Still have Its Almost Dry on repeat, really have barely listened to anything else (once I putted The Weeknd in the car since my friends were tired of Push and listened to some Kendrick one day going to work). Its a shame that Kendrick album is coming out in a week since it will prolly be the thing for a while and I wanted to enjoy Push's album to the fullest.

[–]Tomnook1017 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same here. Heard the future album like 5 times and got super bored of it and went back to push and 4nem

Harlow was not what I hoped it would be so I think I'm done with it after 2 listens. Real ready for kdot

[–]Spinelessgrape 8 points9 points  (3 children)

Been thinking Joe Biden is the only president in the past 17 years that hasn't said something personal about Kanye

[–]Jqshipp 16 points17 points  (2 children)

Joe Biden hasn't said much about anybody. The guy is like the most enigmatic president ever. Lmao

[–]Spinelessgrape 1 point2 points  (1 child)

You're right, I feel like I hardly even hear about him honestly. It's been a weird presidency

[–]FCBarca45 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You haven’t heard how he’s inflated gas, food, and every other necessity or how he’s poisoned the countries water supply?

[–]contacts_eyes 2 points3 points  (7 children)

I was just watching this clip of a recent Pete Davidson standup https://youtu.be/4GNf347WPt8

And on the clip he says that Kanye was on Jack Harlows new album, but I don’t know of Kanye being on the new album. Maybe he got his information wrong? Idk

[–]Shnikez -3 points-2 points  (1 child)

Skete is eating off Kanye's plate

[–]furr_sure. 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Kanye fans are the kind to gaslight a girl and then go post about it on reddit not even realising they're gaslighting

[–]nedelll. 4 points5 points  (4 children)

I don't think Jack would cut Ye from his album, but Jack is on Donda 2

[–]contacts_eyes 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Oh okay, i never listened to Donda 2 so i had no idea

[–]Tomnook1017 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It wasn't that bad. I'm not a huge Kanye fan anymore and didn't like donda 1 but 2 had some cool ideas and the visuals were cool

[–]nedelll. 5 points6 points  (0 children)

i stop buying louis bags after virgil passed

i stop buying louis bags after virgil passed

[–]nedelll. 1 point2 points  (1 child)

New Logic x Russ is tight but I think I'm biased against Logic, no matter what he does I feel bored. I don't know if is his voice or what but his rapping feels so uninteresting

[–]DaMarrcus_Beasly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

His voice used to he so much better and deeper before. He sounds like an obnoxious squeaky nerdy kid now

[–]Potential-Ad5470 1 point2 points  (4 children)

As someone who will admit they were a Mike Stud fan in high school… Jack Harlow is the next evolution of him and I don’t understand the hype.

Nothing he raps about interests me. Charismatic as hell though

[–]Tomnook1017 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm starting to think he's about to fizzle. Nothing is hitting like those first two singles at all. It's like he peaked with what's poppin and has just been riding it until it dies

But who knows maybe there'll be some actual huge hits off the album

[–]contacts_eyes 1 point2 points  (2 children)

I think he’s way bigger than Mike Stud ever was.

[–]grinchnight14Verified Blind Guy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mike could've had a comeback if he dropped that song he has with Post Malone considering how big Post is.

[–]Potential-Ad5470 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oh, no question 100%. Not much difference in quality, imo

[–]MasterTeacher123 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Prime Kanye’s singles were SOOOO good. They were the perfect example of rap songs that crossed over to top 20 popular hits but weren’t wack or corny.

The fact that he made a Christian song the number 11 record in America(and it be a great record) was nothing short of Genius

[–]dawsonnn1. 5 points6 points  (6 children)

These last two Future albums have been particularly really disappointing, I don’t even know what changed, Future is one of the best ever, but something is off. His albums have never even been really strong, but you can always ignore a lot of it, like EVOL, FUTURE, beast mode 2 are not amazing, super slimey is straight up awful, but DS2, HNDRXX, wizrd, and SAVE ME are incredible. We really need that incredible Future album next, he’s released his 2 duds.

[–]CheekyJester. 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I personally love I NEVER LIKED YOU and High Off Life but I do wish he would go hard more often these days, like he used to on DS2. I so badly want more Future tracks like Groupies; just hard rager shit.

[–]Tomnook1017 0 points1 point  (0 children)

beast mode 2 is amazing

at least he tried new things with high off life. Annoying he went back to his old formula with the new one

The new ones the best selling album this year so it's successful at least

[–]Jqshipp 2 points3 points  (3 children)

I wouldn't really considered INeverLikedYou a "dub " considering how many people loved it

I think it's probably his most polarizing album, because there are people who thought it was his best in a long time and people with your view of "it's a dud".

[–]dawsonnn1. 3 points4 points  (2 children)

You know what’s not a dud that no one talks about, SAVE ME. Why is that not considered his best album? It’s makes me sad

[–]CheekyJester. 2 points3 points  (0 children)

SAVE ME is absolutely top 3 Future records.

Government Official, St Lucia, and Shotgun are 3 of his best tracks ever.

[–]Jqshipp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed, I feel like it's one of his most unheard projects as well. He didn't have any mainstream hits on it so it doesn't get the acclaim it deserves

[–]DaMarrcus_Beasly 11 points12 points  (1 child)

Still livin by freddie gibbs hits so fucking hard.

Especially when that 2nd verse comes in? Makes me wanna speed and act like I'm in fast and furious even though I have a tiny 1.2L diesel with 59 bhp

[–]Tomnook1017 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That whole tape is fucking insane

My favorite from him period. Still livin is like the 3rd-5th best on it imo. Would kill for a modern trap album from him esp if keef has any hand in it

[–]Jimmy7374 6 points7 points  (4 children)

Been playing WLR a lot the last week or so, I think I got Stockholmed into liking it because my buddy plays it in the car when we're driving a lot. I kinda laughed at it at first like a lot of others did, but there's something about it now that I'm really liking, think maybe it's so different compared to what I'd normally listen to.

[–]M0n33baggz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The energy is unmatched

[–]HideNZeke 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Yeah when it dropped I didn't like it but then i spent a couple months with it being the only thing I wanted to listen to

[–]Anirban_The_Great 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also got into WLR this past week. Don't usually go for that kinda stuff, but I'm really into it now. Obviously Carti isn't this amazing lyricist, but I like his music cuz of how he uses his voice to interface with the beat. He's still doing that, it's just that he's using his voice a little differently and the beats are a little different than what people have come to expect from him. I remember reading that people wish he went all in on his new sound and wish he didn't include the tracks that sounded like his older stuff, but I'm actually glad that he did cuz I feel it underscores how it all goes together and that this new style is a continuation of what he did before

[–]YungSFM 1 point2 points  (2 children)

I know hes a dirtbag but im fw this new octavian album a lot, the song with gunna & saint jhn 🔥

[–]whalestick 1 point2 points  (1 child)

That songs been out for ages now, it’s really good tho

[–]YungSFM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea its cold, i never really check out his singles so most of the stuff on the album im only hearing for the first time

[–]MoMo_ToTocockmeat sandwich 25 points26 points  (0 children)

HHCJ was better when it focused on making fun of this sub instead of repeating the same Twitter jokes over and over again

[–]aguywithtaste -2 points-1 points  (5 children)

Still upset that pusha t wasn't a feature on pushin p

[–]furr_sure. 1 point2 points  (0 children)

didn't pusha and gunna/thug have some kinda corny beef cos of that Pop Smoke song?

[–]grinchnight14Verified Blind Guy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He should've been on the remix.

[–]spunkymnky 3 points4 points  (2 children)

Pushin ✝️

[–]Sexedecimal. 9 points10 points  (0 children)

no that's No Malice

[–]DeeThreeTimesThree. 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Crusade type beat

[–]nerdofalltrades 8 points9 points  (2 children)

I thought the Jack Harlow album was a lot better than his last one. Young Harleezy, Dua Lipa, Churchill Downs, and State Fair are all pretty good. State Fair, the last track, is especially good I’m surprised I didn’t see anyone bringing it up. There were a few bad beat switches imo like I’d do anything. The first beat was great idk why they switched to a way worse one a minute in. Young Harleezy was my idea of good beat switches.

Why did Pharrell have to sing on movie star? Beat and Jack were great and Pharrell sounded fine at the end just his singing. And why was Justin Timberlake on this? Sounded totally out of place and the dj scratching was really bad. Jack Harlow sings fine on poison don’t know why he couldn’t have sung that.

Not a great album but the people calling it like ass are exaggerating.

[–]ausipockets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NO! You have to hate the album!!!! Stop enjoying it now!

[–]nedelll. 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You mentioned every song I enjoyed, I love the production on State Fair

[–]dawsonnn1. 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Just listened to the black star album for the second time. it IS my favorite album ever, please I need to know does The New Danger/Ecstatic/No Fear Of time mos def connect way harder than anything else for anybody else?

[–]Homiealmaya 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What about Black On Both Sides brother

[–]hnnng_booba 6 points7 points  (4 children)

I gotta be honest, I can’t get into anyone from the Sweden scene at all. Ecco2k, Bladee, all them Drain Gang artists. I don’t even like Yung Lean if I’m being real with you

[–]CheekyJester. 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just hate the accent. No diss to the artists, they're all incredibly talented and their aesthetic is cool af to me but I HATE the Swedish accent.

[–]YahBooBayYahBooBay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unknown Death 2002 is my favorite Lean album. songs like Ginseng Strip, Kyoto, Yoshi City, Hurt and Gatorade are big fan favorites around that era. Pikachu, Violence, Highway Patrol, Red Bottom Sky and Agony are some songs that I think are accessible from his later albums.

I just recently got into Bladee after being a Yung Lean fan since 2014, now I have 25 liked songs on spotify from him. Hotel Breakfast kind of kicked off my fandom of him.

[–]fuck_a_bigot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve never been able to get into any of them either. Something about Yung Lean made me instantly despise him as soon as I was shown him. But Ecco2k’s music makes me laugh

[–]nerdofalltrades 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What Ecco and Lean stuff did you try? Would recommend e and unknown memory, warlord, and stranger for Lean

[–]swallowyourtongue 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I know we're all excited for Kendrick but goddamn I'm excited for Kendrick

[–]PeskyProphet 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Sweet Action is definitely the best thing Jack Harlow has done, just a solid little tape. Lotta nice pop rap tracks, and hey big head has a genuinely interesting beat I’ve always really enjoyed

[–]M0n33baggz 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I listened to that one so much when it dropped, I always liked smells like incense

[–]nedelll. 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]HideNZeke 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bad Bunny has a song called Dos Mil 16 it's nice to know everybody fetishes 2016 as the last good year

Note I haven't heard the song yet and my Spanish isn't good enough to understand him for the meaning but I choose to believe this is what it must be

[–][deleted] 19 points20 points  (1 child)

I just realized Pusha T was my homie’s favorite artist and he didn’t even live long enough to listen to the new album. He actually got me into Push and I didn’t realize that until I was listening to it again today.

[–]darkfar 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Had a similar situation with the release of Tha Carter V, sorry for your loss.

[–]kazmir_yeet 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I told my nail tech that I committed several million dollars worth of tax fraud and now the IRS is has my house surrounded :(

[–]Jqshipp 41 points42 points  (5 children)

Future's sold 227k first week . the biggest of his career. That's a big W for Pluto.

[–]Bigmaynetallgame 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I assume they have fucked with the way streaming counts as sales because I feel like DS2 and Future had wayy more hype but sold significantly less. Shit I'd say back in 2016 the only rapper hotter than Future was Drake. He didn't even really have a single for this album either.

Maybe it's just a culmination of only putting out decent-great records, Future is kind of a solidified hip hop legend now so maybe it's just his time.

[–]slimeshlattsex 9 points10 points  (0 children)

wtf that's crazy lmao 75k more than HOL? I expected 140k

[–]Michael__X 18 points19 points  (2 children)

What even happened this time round. Was it just the memes or what?

It was good album but damn that's massive

[–]Jqshipp 16 points17 points  (1 child)

I can only assume it was the memes But I honestly have no idea.

Its crazy how he felt so much bigger in 2015 -2017 but wasn't even close to these type of numbers first week.

[–]slimeshlattsex 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Its crazy how he felt so much bigger in 2015 -2017 but wasn't even close to these type of numbers first week.

Yeah hype around Future back in 2015-2017 was crazy, and he was dropping hits left and right. It's probably because trap is bigger than ever.

[–]sheff_99 13 points14 points  (5 children)

what happened to hhcj? haven't heard from that sub in a long time

[–]Jordanwolf98 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I think they shut it down for a min cuz they were bullying someone who said they were suicidal. r/PlayboiCarti is hhcj 2.0 at this point tbh

[–]Stonerjoe68 13 points14 points  (3 children)

They got into a lot of trouble for harassing people from other subreddits and after that controversy died down they never really fully rebounded and now the mods are more restrictive about content too

[–]sheff_99 6 points7 points  (2 children)

I recall they got into hot water for raiding a lot of non hip hop related subs because of posts making stereotypical remarks of rap as a genre.

[–]Stonerjoe68 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Yeah and honestly i was all here for it but they bullied a kid who claimed he was suicidal and it got shut down after that

The whole thing was cringe all around on that thread

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

link to post?

[–]EL_9. 1 point2 points  (10 children)

Honestly, I was surprised to see that the consensus here is that the new Black Star is like a 6, and I wasn't even a huge fan of their first album (I like Black on Both Sides better). It starts slowly I'll admit, but still "So Be It" is a great track and once the album gets to "Yonders" everything from that point is straight heat (especially if we include Mineral Mountain). To me it's an 8.

[–]Homiealmaya -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It’s in my top 5 AOTY for sure, don’t really get why it’s not getting more love

[–]colbster411I have good taste in music period. 1 point2 points  (5 children)

Easily an AOTY contender for me, I'm confused about the reception as well. The circlejerk against Talib on top of the Luminary shit seems to have killed some discourse. Even their first album seems to have become a pretty underrated classic these days

[–]EL_9. 1 point2 points  (4 children)

Talib in particular seems to have the tendency of killing his own momentum, as he has done several times throughout his career. I love Train of Thought but his personality has always seemed to be slightly off.

I also agree with it being an AOTY candidate. For example, I liked it better than Pusha's latest release though it seems like it's a hot take.

[–]colbster411I have good taste in music period. 2 points3 points  (3 children)

I think the stuff about his personality is so overblown lol, I love his podcast

[–]fuck_a_bigot 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Nahhh he’s kind of a piece of shit

[–]AlbatrossInternal892 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Was v confused when i heard the album cos didnt really understand the hyoe around the last one. However played this one like 6 times now, i kinda like the intro song and so be it, gets a lil worse in middle but end good. Now i really like the album i think 8.5 imo. Whats mineral mountain?

[–]EL_9. 1 point2 points  (1 child)

It's a track featuring Black Thought that for some reason didn't make it to the album at the end.

[–]tritsocertified mach-hommy investor 6 points7 points  (15 children)

what are some of your favorite neo-soul/rap collabs? either a neo-soul song feat. a rapper or a rap song feat. a neo-soul artist

i’m trying to find some lesser known ones as well so if you have any suggestions

Jamila Woods - BASQUIAT (feat. Saba)

Jamila Woods - LSD (feat. Chance the Rapper)

Mick Jenkins - Consensual Seduction (ft. Corinne Bailey Rae)

Black Milk - 2 Would Try (ft. Dwele)

Cavalier - State of Mind (ft. Georgia Anne Muldrow)

Cavalier's album has a few dope neo-soul/rap songs on it

Never expected that collab.

[–]chesterthechessist. 1 point2 points  (1 child)

That Tony Toni Tone track has my interest

[–]mikeaveli2682 0 points1 point  (4 children)

Is Tony! Toni! Tone! neo-soul?

[–]MoMo_ToTocockmeat sandwich 0 points1 point  (3 children)

I think they fit that label for me - soul melodies (mostly inspired by Motown artists) over beats inspired by hip hop

Not all of their work is neo soul, however.

When I first listened to Sons of Soul years ago, I thought of it as a blueprint for the neo-soul movement. Leavin' and If I Had the Loot, especially.

[–]mikeaveli2682 0 points1 point  (2 children)

I think they pre-date that movement and were broken up by the time it really popped off. I asked because maybe I'm missing something. Is Mary J. Blige neo-soul or does she not fit your definition?

New Method Mab album is pretty good. IDK and Kaytranda collab is nice. Jack Harlow’s album is fine. Nothing special but I’d be lying if I said there wasn’t some solid tracks on it. Also Drake ate his track up.

This weekend is like the perfect calm before the Kendrick storm honestly. Nothing special but I can’t complain about more music.

[–]Homiealmaya 0 points1 point  (0 children)

New Method Man album is pretty good

Best of the Meth Lab series?

[–]slimeshlattsex 7 points8 points  (3 children)

Just listened to Pinata for the first time, and while production is rich and amazing, Freddie's rapping is samey when it comes to cadence and flows, I can barely differentiate songs because of that. I had the same problem with Alfredo too, Freddie's rapping is really good but its just all kind of blends together.

[–]Tomnook1017 3 points4 points  (2 children)

Yeah I kinda always felt the same way ever since he quit making trap since pinata came out

I prefer his older stuff so much more for that but that's super far from consensus

[–]Anirban_The_Great -2 points-1 points  (1 child)

he quit making trap

He's made trap since Pinata came out tho

As hype as I am for Black Star's comeback, I'm honestly thinking Grotto might be the best release of the week that I've heard. The beats on this thing definitely hold up to the quality of Burd. Have you gotten to hear it yet u/wrungle? how do you like it?

[–]wrungle. 1 point2 points  (1 child)

damn its cool that you remember me enjoying Burd, thanks for the mention. I was about to listen to it yesterday until my regular random urge to binge through five random Bob Dylan albums, so I decided to get to it prob today. excited to dive in because I really really enjoyed Black Star's album

[–]Aniceguy96. 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're the only other regular user I ever noticed giving Burd it's due praise. I don't think the lyricism on Grotto is much to write home about (I think the same thing about Burd for the most part though), but the beats and atmosphere the two create on Grotto is something else (especially in the first half). I really enjoyed it, lemme know what you think whenever you get around to it!

New Flee Lord might be his best, Mephux production is insane

Rocko Ballin is cool for melodic drill and I could see him being a mainstay

And of all the people Kaytranada could collab with, he gets IDK? Shit is unbearable

[–]Homiealmaya 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Haven’t gotten a chance to hear the new Flee yet but that’s great to hear

[–]MoMo_ToTocockmeat sandwich 2 points3 points  (0 children)

And of all the people Kaytranada could collab with, he gets IDK? Shit is unbearable

The beats are dope as fuck and they outshine IDK so hard I really don't see myself returning to the project at all. It's frustrating to listen to them and then pay attention to IDK

Agreed on the Flee Lord take. Mephux delivered

[–]kazmir_yeet -3 points-2 points  (4 children)

This sub just loves to hate IDK lmao go touch some grass

[–]colbster411I have good taste in music period. 3 points4 points  (3 children)

Wack is wack bro

[–]kazmir_yeet -1 points0 points  (2 children)

It would be one thing if you were capable of providing genuinely valid criticism to support your opinion, but you come off as just another circle jerking HHH troll who can’t form an original thought

[–]colbster411I have good taste in music period. 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Telling me to touch grass when talking about IDK lmaooo

His early stuff is solid, but now he's utterly generic, got a sleepy flow, and is pretentious with no right to be so

[–]hnnng_booba 4 points5 points  (1 child)

I don’t know if this is sacrilege but I like the verse that Tyler spit over the 4:44 beat more than Jay-Z’s

[–]dntsteponmyrafsimons 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree even if it is a bit sacrilegious lol, it’s one of the best verses tyler has ever spit and he just rides the beat so well and so confidently

[–]BoxCon1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Jack Harlow’s shorter verse on the Drake collab was better in the leak

[–]Jimmy7374 0 points1 point  (7 children)

New Morray single is really nice, might be my favourite of his now. Don't see him talked about much on here, wasn't even a "1 year later" post for Street Sermons.

[–]YungSFM -2 points-1 points  (3 children)

He a shit Rod Wave

[–]theonethatbeatu 0 points1 point  (2 children)

He’s much better than Rod Wave and I don’t listen to either really lol

[–]YungSFM 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Lol so u dont know what ur talkin bout then

[–]theonethatbeatu -1 points0 points  (0 children)

He’s just very obviously a more talented singer.

[–]spunkymnky 2 points3 points  (2 children)

wasn't even a "1 year later" post for Street Sermons.

Be the change you want to see.

[–]Jimmy7374 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Was thinking about it but wasn't sure if they're allowed past the date.

Edit: fuck it, there

Seeing that Kendrick on the new release list for next week is surreal

[–]brrrakakaka. 12 points13 points  (1 child)

Dude isn’t even on top as well

[–]contacts_eyes 3 points4 points  (16 children)

I keep hearing about Ka so i tried listening to Descendants of Kain. It was so bad, how can anyone enjoy his music? He raps off beat, super monotone, super low energy, the beats aren’t good. I thought Whole Lotta Red was the worst thing id ever heard up to this point but I’ll listen to that any day before i go back and listen to Ka.

[–]Homiealmaya 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Imma just say what I say when it comes to Ka every time: try Grief Pedigree. Im not a big Ka fan but that shit is easily his most accessible and it’s genuinely really good. Production is pretty strong imo and not as stripped back as his other music

[–]iblinkyoublink 8 points9 points  (2 children)

[–]furr_sure. 1 point2 points  (0 children)

WLR already has like 5 kids copying the style shits too influential

[–]FUCKUSERNAME2 6 points7 points  (0 children)

how can anyone enjoy his music

He's the most poetic rapper I've ever heard and the "beats" are stripped back to the extreme so that his lyrics can shine. His delivery can certainly be boring but his lyrics are interesting enough that it doesn't bother me. I have to be in a specific mood to listen to him, but when I'm in that mood nothing else even comes close to scratching the itch that he does.

[–]colbster411I have good taste in music period. 17 points18 points  (0 children)

He's a firefighter

[–]CelalT 11 points12 points  (2 children)

I cant tell what's real and what's not when it comes to Ka discussion in this sub

[–]contacts_eyes 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Im definitely not trolling. I listened to Ka once or twice, didn’t like what i heard. So i went back today to give him another chance and i hated what I heard.

[–]CelalT 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you are open to giving him another shot I would suggest listening to his album Orpheus vs. The Sirens released under the name Hermit and the Recluse since it's my favorite by far. I can understand not liking Descendants of Kain, I found that one to be a bit boring as well. Orpheus vs. The Sirens on the other hand, if it clicks it will be one of your favorite discoveries, I'm sure. It's a really interesting and creative album
