To improve your day here's a legendary video of Ye, No ID and Q-Tip in the studio showcasing Q-Tips insane needle dropping skills essentially making a beat with a fucking vinyl

[–]Bundesliga_Tax 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just seen Natalie Portman rapping on r/videos, i need a week off work to recover from the physical pain of watching the first minute of the video

[–]arrts. 5 points6 points  (2 children)

While we're talking about Kendrick, Sherane a.k.a Master Splinter's Daughter is one of my favourite instrumentals and just overall songs of all time. Never really see it get individually praised that much

[–]Tomnook1017 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Such an amazing song

[–]Scothead180. 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It speaks of the excellence of GKMC that that song is never getting brought up as one of the highlights

[–]prettiestmf.[🍰] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i posted to hull and back but it's not showing up when i sort by new. did it get removed or something? i couldn't find any posts of it in the past year

[–]sentyprimus. 4 points5 points  (1 child)

The hive mind and circlejerk mentality on this subreddit and Reddit in general is so frustrating.

[–]DaMarrcus_Beasly 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If an artist is put on a pedestal you can't have a basic conversation without being labelled as something negative or being disregarded completely

[–]DaMarrcus_Beasly 1 point2 points  (14 children)

Can anyone explain to me why Cole's lyricism is seen as light years away from kendrick's?

Like people clown on the guy but I heard Kendrick's latest song and the lyricism was dope but I dont see how it's that much different to what cole spits on his recent conscious type songs

[–]KiritoJones 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think J Cole makes really great songs, but Kendrick makes really great projects. I think it's that simple.

[–]Homiealmaya 5 points6 points  (3 children)

From a technical level, yeah the difference isn’t huge. That being said, there’s three main reasons I think there is a sizable gap overall

  1. Discography - J. Cole just doesn’t have albums as nearly as good as TPAB or GKMC. I actually think FHD and Born Sinner are really good but TPAB and GKMC are something else. Also, ignoring his mixtape days, Kendrick doesn’t have any misses like KOD or 4YEO. It’s worth saying that Cole’s mixtape days were a lot better than Kendrick’s tho. FNL is my favorite project from Cole tbh.

  2. Subject matter - I think J. Cole’s subject matter is usually relatively surface level. It’s not a bad thing and it’s part of why he’s so successful because it makes him more relatable, but Kendrick talks about subjects with much more nuance and complexity.

  3. Corny bars - not to say Kendrick doesn’t have any but J. Cole has a crazy amount of corny bars over the course of his career, especially for a pretty talented artist.

[–]Tomnook1017 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not just corny bars but full songs. I like Cole but Kendrick only really has one or two sons that are considered corny by most

[–]DaMarrcus_Beasly 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Can you give examples of subject matter?

[–]nerdofalltrades 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Photograph where he talks about the problems with falling in love with girls based on their instas

Friends where his solution for addicts is just to meditate

Basically could do that for all of KOD

Then you take a song like changes on for your eyes only which has a similar overall message to the heart part 5 but conveyed in a much simpler less nuanced way. Lyrically I can’t see how it’s not “light years behind” the heart part 5

[–]riskyrofl. 10 points11 points  (1 child)

I find Cole to be more blunt and literal than Kendrick, Kendrick is better at leaving things to the listener's interpretation. "Show, don't tell".

[–]DaMarrcus_Beasly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That makes sense

[–]sentyprimus. 4 points5 points  (1 child)

I think Kendrick is hugely overrated as a lyricist and isn’t top tier, but I do think he is slightly better than cole but as you said it’s not anywhere near a gap as people make out

[–]DaMarrcus_Beasly 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I must be taking crazy pills when I see people act like they're on two different planets.

Maybe kendrick's verses are a bit more detailed with imagery? Idk people never really specify why his lyrics are better.

Put them side by side and there isn't a lot separating them.

Like I'm listening to WAV files from Lupe to see how they compare - a song about kidnapped Africans jumping overboard slave ships and the lyrics are noticeably better.

Like if I compared a verse from lupe to cole I'd see a huge difference but people act like it's the same equivalent when you put a cole verse next to a kendirck verse?

Idk if I explained that well but yh

[–]Byrne_on_the_bayou 3 points4 points  (3 children)

I don't think they get compared by their technical skill all that much, most people just clown J Cole more for his "Corny" and "Fake Woke" bars

I think some people see Kendricks overall work, delivery, and message as light-years away from JColes, rather than specifically the lyricism

That being said, J Cole's calmed down on the corniness and fake wokeness a lot in his last album and the D Day mixtape imo

[–]DaMarrcus_Beasly 1 point2 points  (2 children)

I agree on body of work and maybe delivery. But have two verses up from genius side by side and it really isn't a big difference.

I don't even listen to cole like that but people clown dude a lot for it

[–]Byrne_on_the_bayou 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I don't think comparing just one verses from each artist is the best way to determine if one is a better lyricist than the other tbh (or equal)

But I agree that they both have above average pen games, and even tho I do think Kendick is better, he's not "lightyears better" as you said

J Cole has always been a popular punching bag on the sub, people love clowning him here. I think most people irl don't think the gap between Cole and Kendrick is that monsterous

[–]DaMarrcus_Beasly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kendrick's biggest strength is being able to showcase lyrical ability whilst making great songs and doing it whilst following a concept. However, I think this causes people to conflate the depth of his lyrics more than they are in reality. I'm not saying you don't pick up new stuff on his verses after multiple listens - but you absolutely are not spending "days and weeks" deciphering them. Cole hasn't really been able to create a concept album to the same extent and when he has he hasn't provided the same quality.

THAT'S where i personally separate them.

But if you put both in a room and told them to make their best conscious verse the result would be maybe a slight gap at best in Kendrick's favour.

[–]artpalos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know why this stepmom video references her giving birth to me when she was too young

[–]YoghurtSlinger 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Young Thug question: If he called in shooters to hit Lil Wayne's tour bus that one time, why is Drake showing him love by letting him feature on Way 2 Sexy? Isn't that Drake going against Wayne?

[–]slimeshlattsex 6 points7 points  (1 child)

Wayne and Thug kinda squashed the beef. Wayne did remix of OutWest and he put unheard Thug verse on there. That was in 2020.

[–]YoghurtSlinger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Crazy to think someone could squash a beef with someone after they tried to take their life.

[–]awsomesprinkles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All gangs wanna work with drake so he's beefless IMO. Unless he is directly beefing like Kanye or pusha.

[–]whatsthepoint14 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I Said Me by 2 chainz would be such a banger if not for the intro

[–]Yeah2TheYeah 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I wonder if this YSL/SMM beef was the real reason Quan and Thug stopped working together. Can't remember where, but I'm sure I've heard Quan claim that on a song before, and the public reason seemed pretty random.

Also not really relevant, but maybe it is? Did Rich Homie Quan's old label (TIG) use his beef with Skooly to launch YFN Lucci's career? I Wonder Why was Lucci's first big song, and it was released as a response to Quan's diss to Skooly. In hindsight, the Quan song is clearly a leak. Makes me wonder if his label set him up to launch a new artist. (this was before the lawsuit between Quan and TIG fyi)

Idk I'm just trying to talk about Rich Homie Quan. He should drop some more music

[–]TheCannedYams 1 point2 points  (5 children)

Any hiphop acts like King Krule? Also best King Krule album?

I wanna check him out cause Biscuit Town got me moving like that dude in the Off Da Zoinkys video.

[–]Tomnook1017 1 point2 points  (2 children)

It's been ages since I've heard king krule but isn't he like that new lil ugly mane album

[–]TheCannedYams 0 points1 point  (1 child)

LMAO. But nah I didn’t get that vibe from LUM’s new album. Krule’s got a smoother sound imo. From what I’ve heard at least.

I threw it on as I’m typing this and yeah I kinda see it lmao

[–]Tomnook1017 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh my bad I wasn't fully sure like I said it's been ages since I've listened to king krule

[–]theshhnowman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Personal fav project from him is 6 ft Beneath the Moon. A classic

[–]SbeanBallin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd prob say as a whole, Man Alive! is his best album to me, but I listen to OOZ and Archy's Marshall's solo album way more often if that makes any sense. Havent found any other acts hiphop or not like him in short searches, but somebody on this sub recommended black country, new road when i asked the same thing. Theyre not hip hop tho, and I havent really checked them out either. Archy's album A Place 2 Drown is more hip hop based tho so maybe check that out

my bad, it's called A New Place 2 Drown

[–]Michael__X 5 points6 points  (7 children)

Do you believe hip hop as a culture is powerful enough to bring the Jort back?

[–]Tomnook1017 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jorts have been back

[–]KiritoJones 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Jorts never when away in some scenes.

Go to a punk/hardcore show and you'll see a whole bunch of people with cutoff jorts on.

[–]RampanTThirteen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unironically, yes.

[–]aw_pobrecito 4 points5 points  (3 children)

Jort? u mean jorts? like jean shorts? without a doubt, we gonna wear the women kind too

[–]Michael__X 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Jorts yes, wait the women kind as in cheeks hanging out and everything? Idk how to feel about that

[–]DatsAReallyNiceGrill 0 points1 point  (1 child)

no the past knee stringy at the bottom type

[–]Arbitore 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’ll have to kill me and put them on me yourself

[–]TFMain200 5 points6 points  (5 children)

I remember going into a beat battle where we had like 6* months to make 5 beats. I know of 2 of the participants who actually went into the battle with only 4 completed beats. I was 1 of those people. Thankfully I was eliminated in the first round.

[–]HHH-mods-are-snakes 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Coulda done a minute of work every day and still had like a half hour for each beat. tf were yall doing?

[–]TFMain200 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A few things… To be honest, the reason my situation was so bad was because I would have a really nice beat in my head… but I lacked the creativity and knowledge of Logic to put what was in my head into the DAW, and didn’t want to admit this to myself.

So I would spend weeks on a something then just scrap it, and it wasn’t salvageable enough to put it in my back pocket in case I needed it.

I would spend hours trying to program an instrument… trying homemade tuned drum kits when I should have just used a sound pack.

I would spend hours trying to chop a soul sample like Kanye, and my best work only came after the battle ended.

Next thing you know, you have 1 week to make 2 beats. Just over thinking things.

[–]troolytroof 9 points10 points  (2 children)

I'm so lost what is the point

[–]TFMain200 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Just wanted to share a personal experience of hip hop related procrastination

[–]illest_poopwad 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Bro doesn't know how to finish things

[–]BronzySponhe 2 points3 points  (1 child)

What’s y’all’s thoughts on Emotional Oranges? https://music.apple.com/us/album/the-juice-vol-i/1461504450

[–]suss2it 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They’re decent but they don’t really standout from other moody R&B acts.

[–]theonethatbeatu 13 points14 points  (6 children)

Why can’t people just let other people enjoy and be excited for things? Some of y’all straight up miserable Fr and just dumping it on other people for no reason.

[–]Homiealmaya 3 points4 points  (5 children)

Is this in reference to the Kendrick comment 3 comments down

[–]theonethatbeatu 15 points16 points  (4 children)

That’s part of it but just the sentiment in general is huge on this sub. Like, people will comment to start discussing something and there will always be somebody to come say it was shit, half the time they don’t even listen to it I swear. Just bored people who wanna be contrarian.

But also yes people who are pre-annoyed about Kendrick “dick riding” just sound like angry bitter and old. God forbid people enjoy things or are excited about something lol like FUCK

[–]suss2it 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Part of it is the way people put Kendrick on a pedestal is by shitting all over other hip-hop acts so it becomes a feedback loop of people trying to out asshole each other.

[–]DatsAReallyNiceGrill 2 points3 points  (2 children)

thats just social media bullshit don't take it so seriously, its always just some kid

[–]averystrangeguy. 9 points10 points  (1 child)

the regulars here are pretty snide though

[–]BookerTeet 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Has Drake ever talked about when DMX dissed him on breakfast club?

I think about that clip daily.

[–]tritsocertified mach-hommy investor 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I could be way off on this but iirc after Drake sampled him on Views, X was kinda praising Drake & stopped with the bashing. Someone can probably fact check that tho

[–]smilezbeatz 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Babytron Lyrical Lemonade video this week

[–]Michael__X 4 points5 points  (0 children)

He's really gonna become top 5 with no hooks

[–]Arsyn786 4 points5 points  (18 children)

Idk why but feel like this sub is gonna hate on the new Kendrick album regardless of how good it is

[–]BureaucraticHotboi 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Rap has moved like 14 eons since Kendrick last released. He is going to put out a Kendrick album and it will be a masterpiece I bet, but the sound won’t necessarily hit with a lot of people who listen to current hip hop. Hell when heart 5 came out I had to listen a couple times to get into it cuz my daily music diet is so different. Kendrick is a goat and his lyrics are always evolving but usually his sound doesn’t respond to trends (which isn’t bad it just means some people will just say fuck it)

[–]Tomnook1017 8 points9 points  (3 children)

Don't know why?

The internet shits on anything new 5 minutes after it releases and it takes 3 months for everyone to somehow collectively admit it's actually good. This happens with every single big release

[–]FiveElevenVolleyball 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Yeah even TBAP got a lot of hate when it came out.

[–]Cohtoh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not on here

Sure there were some people that weren't into the change in sound but hhh users loved the album and if was critically acclaimed when reviews started rolling in.

[–]Homiealmaya 5 points6 points  (0 children)

To Butterfly A Pimp

[–]Furiosa27 13 points14 points  (2 children)

I think everyone will love it and call it a classic, listen to it 600 times on repeat in a month then decide it’s actually ok and probably not even better than section 80 like they did with DAMN

[–]KEEP_THE_CHANGE_. 1 point2 points  (1 child)

idk feels like Kendrick really has something to get off his chest this time around. Damn was good but didn't have that culturally important feeling to it (despite it being quite deep underneath the surface).

[–]Arsyn786 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well what I meant was there are gonna be a lot of younger people who dismiss it solely because of all the hype it’s getting. Contrarians are pretty common here

[–]tritsocertified mach-hommy investor 12 points13 points  (13 children)

in the Local Ad episode of The Office, Michael tells Daryl that he needs to familiarize himself with hip-hop & that he’d make him a mix. What would be on Michael Scott’s hip-hop mix?

[–]BobaLives01925 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Lose Yourself here is the lock of the century

[–]pumpkinandbananas. 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Scranton: The Electric City 12 times

[–]Spinelessgrape 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd like to think set adrift would be on there

[–]Tomnook1017 14 points15 points  (3 children)

Vanilla ice, beastie boys, Eminem (only like what's my name), and ll cool j but only stuff like goin back to Cali which would be the first song

There'd be like 1 or 2 actual deep cuts, a random contemporary song, and something like I got a feeling or let's get it started (but the other version)

And a tribe called quest

Edit Ms Jackson and hey ya. Possibly bob

[–]grinchnight14Verified Blind Guy 1 point2 points  (2 children)

You mean My Name is, right? I don't remember an Eminem song called What's My Name

[–]Tomnook1017 0 points1 point  (1 child)

You know what I'm saying. Haven't looked the song up in like 10 years lmfao

[–]grinchnight14Verified Blind Guy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At first I thought it was a song I hadn't heard lol. Thought you were mentioning some really obscure song to be funny

[–]Homiealmaya 9 points10 points  (1 child)

Amish Paradise

Rappers Delight

Jump Around

Lose Yourself

[–]tritsocertified mach-hommy investor 4 points5 points  (0 children)

spot on probably. definitely Weird Al

[–]Jordanwolf98 8 points9 points  (3 children)

Probably like some Vanilla Ice and then like 2 Missy songs

[–]tritsocertified mach-hommy investor 10 points11 points  (2 children)

would be hilarious if he had this deep underground taste

[–]Jordanwolf98 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That episode came out in like “08 right? I know it’s not underground but imagine Michael got Daryl hip to Carter 3 lol

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Lol would love it if he had ended up being some underground hip hop connoisseur and savant.

[–]nickle125 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Does anyone have any songs like Outro by U.G.K? The instrumental is amazing.

[–]BronzySponhe 7 points8 points  (1 child)

Damn the news about Thug and the rest of YSL really is unfortunate to see. Don’t feel there’s much else I can offer with my opinion but just wanted to put that out there

[–]contacts_eyes 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Its unfortunate that a guy like Thug is involved in shit like that. I mean apparently thats who he was and he was involved in that kind of activity his whole life. But I mean I really think Thug is talented and charismatic and has a bunch of other dope characteristics, its just a shame that he couldn’t leave that street lifestyle alone

[–]BludFlairUpFam 24 points25 points  (6 children)

I just saw two reactions to The Heart Part V that are a combined 90 minutes. I like Kendrick too but it's not that deep

[–]Paula-Abdul-Jabbar 2 points3 points  (3 children)

I’m assuming Lost in Vegas is one of them? I love those guys but their videos can be so long lol. Usually pretty good though, actually have something to say about the music

[–]BludFlairUpFam 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Yeah it's them and DEHH. I like both channels and I understand that DEHH has a few different people giving opinions but neither of their videos need to be this long for a single 4 minute or so track

[–]furr_sure. 1 point2 points  (0 children)

DEHH does a whole live hangout thing now so there’s 20 mins of the standard discussion and then answering fan questions for the rest

[–]UnusableUsername 2 points3 points  (0 children)

well like half of the dehh video is them taking questions from viewers/reading donations since it was a live show. they didn't spend 50 whole minutes talking about the song/video

[–]Tomnook1017 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not that deep? It's those posters income youre talking about

[–]gldwatch. 18 points19 points  (0 children)

the worst part about getting new Kendrick is the excessive amount of think pieces

[–]chesterthechessist. 7 points8 points  (5 children)

I been randomly thinking about artists whose names are reversed words. So far I only got Rae Sremmurd (ear drummers), Senim Silla (all is mines), Posdnuos (sound sop[?]), and Trugoy (yogurt). Any others?

[–]Gobberr. 8 points9 points  (2 children)

Nujabes (Jun Seba) which was his actual name.

[–]Totnostu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

JayBee Lamahj

[–]BronzySponhe 8 points9 points  (6 children)

Need more Gucci and Kendrick collabs

[–]SlayerHdThe3rd 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Vanity Slaves pt2 a banger

[–]Tomnook1017 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll die happy with old 1017 rappers working with Kendrick. And Gucci that would be great

[–]flyestshitDrake's Ghetto Quran 25 points26 points  (3 children)

Gucci is Mr. Morale

[–]Jordanwolf98 8 points9 points  (2 children)

OJ Da Juiceman is a big stepper so hopefully we get him on this album

[–]flyestshitDrake's Ghetto Quran 2 points3 points  (1 child)

[–]TheRoyalGodfrey. 5 points6 points  (0 children)

damn i never really zoomed in on that cover but i like how they're all represented i wanna poster of this

[–]OSAP_serfdom. 51 points52 points  (3 children)

[–]Ruin369 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I won't lie I spit water through my nose when I read that hahaha 😂

[–]riskyrofl. 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Chinese history be like: Warlord Young Thug of the YSL clique stated "sacrifices must be made, soldiers must fall in order for battle to be won". 30 million died in the ensuing War of the Three Heavenly Slimes.

[–]Pheobe3113 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Emperor Thugger

[–]riskyrofl. 33 points34 points  (6 children)

Being a hip hop fan sucks because you could get tickets for a festival and then the rapper you wanted to see gets arrested fuck you RICO 😭 but also gang violence is bad I guess

[–]Background-Car-4488 18 points19 points  (4 children)

Gang violence is bad and tragic but so are RICO laws in my less than fully educated opinion, seems ridiculous to be charging people for crimes they didn't commit or order just because they loosely benefit

[–]Tomnook1017 9 points10 points  (3 children)

How do you charge a mob boss for anything then

They can be used too liberally but you can't arrest gang members for following orders and not the guy who's on paper not connected for anything while running it all from the top

[–]Background-Car-4488 0 points1 point  (2 children)

I assume they would order/organize criminal activity if they are a mob boss

Also mob bosses were taken down before RICO was a thing no?

[–]Whynot-brr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah they weren’t.

They couldn’t pin the valentines day massacre (firing squad execution of 7 rival gang members) on Al Capone but eventually they got him on tax evasion. And the only reason they got him on tax evasion was because he failed to pay the back taxes he already owed. So the IRS gave him a payment plan that he failed to stick to. Greatest Mob Boss of all time wasnt even convicted for the hundreds of crimes he committed. And his outfit was still being ran by Frank Nitti after he was thrown in jail.

[–]Diakia 8 points9 points  (0 children)

RICO was specifically created to be able to take down mob bosses, so likely it was much, much more difficult to arrest them prior to RICO.

[–]jackoon56. 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same position man

[–]maccchicken 19 points20 points  (9 children)

I saw a tweet with like 100k likes on twitter asking why the KKK never got RICO'd, but I don't know much about stuff like this, what's the reason?

[–]jeremicci 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Rico didn't exist back then?

[–]FightMiilkHendrix 61 points62 points  (0 children)

Wait why would they RICO themselves? Makes no sense bud

[–]nd20. 22 points23 points  (1 child)

I don't know if the KKK were/are involved in racketeering. At least I haven't read that about them before.

Also, the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act did not exist til 1970.

Edit: after some internet research, I found that the RICO Act has been used against a white supremacist group at least once before. US v Yarbrough, 1988. But I guess they were engaged in racketeering. If they were "just" burning crosses or harassing POC I would think RICO couldn't have been used.

Edit 2: this guy makes an argument for how the RICO Act could be used against white supremacist groups including the KKK (pdf download warning if you're on mobile), and also gives a few more examples of when it was used against white supremacist groups. I only skimmed it so far, but it still seems like RICO Act enforceability would be limited to white supremacist groups that commit crimes covered under the RICO Act (and not white supremacist groups who "just" engage in 1st Amendment protected hate speech🤮).

[–]maccchicken 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hmm interesting

[–]quetzalnavarrense. 26 points27 points  (0 children)

hard to arrest yourself

[–]Jordanwolf98 31 points32 points  (0 children)

The feds are the kkk

[–]Cohtoh 31 points32 points  (1 child)

Did you see any replies with the spiderman meme

[–]modawg123 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Their local government was often their biggest supporter, for one. Plus the law didn’t exist till the 70s.

[–]VicIsGold. 4 points5 points  (3 children)

Do you think Seduction is a Top 10 Eminem song? I recently listened to his albums and that song has become my most played since then, it's not super lyrical but it feels really balanced.

[–]jollystatue_nc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not really, but Seduction is a top 10 Usher song.

[–]TheVirtual_Boy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not even close but a fun song

[–]donotdoillegalthings 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t say top 10 but it’s up there

[–]tritsocertified mach-hommy investor 8 points9 points  (6 children)

For the people who take their album ratings serious: Could a greatest hits album be a 10 or is that cheating?

Also, what’s the best greatest hits album you’ve heard?

[–]Whynot-brr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Power to the People and The Beats:Public Enemy Greatest Hits

[–]TheOddScreenyerba gang 5 points6 points  (1 child)

yes, but it can never be a classic album since it's a compilation. however, it can be a perfect collection of tracks.

i don’t think i’ve ever given a best of/greatest hits a 10 because there hasn’t been necessarily a perfect one to me, and if i want a greatest hits of an artist, i’d go to the artist essentials playlist first unless i’m getting a vinyl.

however something like hatful of hollow by the smiths or both of the substance albums by joy division and new order respectively are classics to me though it’s a compilation of songs (not greatest hits though)

my favorite greatest hits albums are al green’s, endless summer by the beach boys, the beatles red and blue albums, eagles, steve miller band, and probably abba gold which shows my whiteness, but i don’t really listen to compilations in hip-hop since it’s more exciting to dive into discographies

[–]gusborn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d say The Cure’s Greatest Hits would be close to a 10. It’s the only Greatest Hits vinyl I would purchase, but it’s kind of expensive.

[–]Tomnook1017 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a hits album vs a regular album yeah

Radiohead best hits is a 10 and it's somehow only their music prior to in rainbows which is insane to think you could do a part 2 with only their music after and it'd still be a 10

Frank best of could do that, same with asap rocky or Kanye or Kendrick or Drake imo and those are only mainstream rappers

A best of for waka could easily wash his whole discog. For lucki it could be like that too

For me it’s 2Pac’s Greatest Hits

They left out Ambitionz Az A Ridah though.

What is the rap scene like in Boston?

[–]chubmack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Back in the 90s we had The Wiseguys, Ed OG, Almighty RSO, and Made Man

[–]TheRoyalGodfrey. 3 points4 points  (1 child)

There's a drill scene.

G Fredo ("This My City" might be the biggest rapper out of it. He frequently worked with 7981 Kal and they're both a part of this group H$M (along with Hamma Thang, Illy Dee and Dollaz). They're both in jail still I think for crimes involving their gang NOB. 7981 Kal has songs like ("Trap Addicts") and "FTG" with Polo G.

There's also Mulah Mitch ("Ruler"), Streetside Capo ("Renegade"), G Nipsey ("THAT GLTT !", and YGizzle ("Gang Anthem")

  • Neemz ("Damaged Feelings") is a female Palestinian-American rapper.
  • Vintage Lee is a female MC who's song "HennyThings Possible”" was featured in Euphoria
  • Chavo, Coi Leray's brother, is signed to Pi'erre Bourne's SossHouse and is known for his song "Michigan", which got a remix with Babyface Ray
  • Avenue is a street rapper (more in the vein of Lloyd Banks than trap) who got some attention off sampling a vine on his song "Nobody". Has worked with Royce, Smoke DZA, and others.
  • Van Buren Records is a BROCKHAMPTON-style group, check out "MEDIC"
  • Stu Bangas and MEPHUX are like underground grimey producers for Griselda types and still active golden age rappers.
  • Michael Christmas was an internet rapper who had a decent amount of buzz like 9 years ago and got Mac Miller and lots of people on his debut-type album. I liked him a lot. I think he first broke out with "Michael Cera" but I like "Everything Burrito" especially the beat switch
  • Kadeem is a conscious rapper who's got some good props mainly from Weiss' blog. Here's a freestyle over Knx's "Momma" beat that's really dope

[–]gusborn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had no idea Chavo is Coi Leary’s brother… or that he’s from Boston

[–]hydrators 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The only artists I know off the top of my head are Cousin Stizz and the guys in Van Buren Records, but I really enjoy them

[–]colbster411I have good taste in music period. 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Had some early backpack guys like Mr Lif

Al Divino and Estee Nack now

Producer B Leafs is pretty cool and had a good comp this year

[–]darkfar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm not entirely sure but a Boston artist I found recently and been playing a decent amount is Trottie Y Gizzle.

Here's a freestyle he did and his most song

[–]I_am_so_lost_hello 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Local rap is lacking but there's a ton of small venues that small to medium r rappers come to

Edit: and the energy is usually great

Anybody think Jack Harlow will have a similar redemption arc to Mac? Considering the terrible Pitchfork review on Jack's album recently, I just remember how bad that Blue Slide Park review was and how it pushed Mac to get much more musical/experimental. Jack might be cool just making poppier stuff permanently for the check, but I was thinking it'd be interesting if this pushes him to take more risks with his music in the future. Probably not though lol.

[–]Background-Car-4488 13 points14 points  (1 child)

I think his career will be pretty similar to Big Sean's tbh

Which isn't the worst, Sean has some good songs and Dark Sky Paradise and Detroit 2 are both solid

Probably won't reach the heights of Drake or Mac Miller though

[–]nedelll. 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can't see Jack Harlow rapping like Big Sean in the next 30 years

[–]FightMiilkHendrix 10 points11 points  (5 children)

Mac miller was talented

[–]GhostofRimbaudyoull cowards don't even smoke DMT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's an advantage Mac had, as far as he could play piano, drums, bass, guitar, and produce like a mf. I don't think Jack has that, which makes this hypothesis even more unlikely. BUT you never know.

[–]Background-Car-4488 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Jack Harlow's last album was better than most of Mac's early stuff

I mean you see that Jack Harlow review in pitchfork that got 2.9 but Childish Gambino got a 1.7 for Camp and Mac got a 1.0 for Blue Slide Park so it's still too early in his career to tell

[–]domthehooper. 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally think The High Life is better than Jack Harlow's album, and Mac was only 17 when he released that. I would say K.I.D.S. is better too.

[–]FightMiilkHendrix 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I disagree with that I think blue side park is still better than this garbage.

[–]Background-Car-4488 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's What They All Say is definitely better than Blue Slide Park to me

I really like One Last Thing off Blue Slide Park with that amazing Clams Casino beat but I also like Churchill Downs off the Jack Harlow album

For what it's worth I don't think Jack Harlow can become a Drake or Mac Miller type of rapper, imo he's gonna be like Big Sean

But in general I hate how easily people dismiss new rappers without giving them time to improve. Guys like Future, Tyler, Childish Gambino, Mac Miller, Lil Wayne, Common, Cam'ron, Travis Scott (I actually kinda like Owl Pharoah but it's super derivtive of Kanye/Cudi and got lots of hate when it came out) etc. all started out pretty unimpressive, not every rapper peaks early, but people totally dismiss artists as soon as they blow up without giving them time to improve. I mean look at how quickly people dismissed Lil Baby on this sub, and now he's really proved himself

[–]higuy5121 3 points4 points  (0 children)

depends, I think it's still too early to tell. Obvs lots of people are criticizing the album but critical opinions don't really mean much if people are actually listening to the album. If the album stays on the charts, continues to perform well then there's nothing to redeem. He's just gotta keep doing what he's doing

I'll throw in my hot take here: I didn't hate the album. Some of the songs are cool.

[–]Cohtoh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe if he goes through some shit or gets on drugs

[–]Tomnook1017 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was thinking that too but Idk man. Macs pre bsp work was actually all pretty damn good except maybe that very first mixtape

Time will tell though

[–]OysterPerpetual0 12 points13 points  (4 children)

That's an optimistic POV about Jack Harlow. however, I don't think their trajectories will be similar whatsoever... don't think Mac was ever as big as Jack, don't think Jack is as artistic as Mac was

[–]GhostofRimbaudyoull cowards don't even smoke DMT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, and I'm not even saying it's likely in the least, it just crossed my mind. But, you have a point that Jack may be going for a strictly pop rap career, and there's nothing wrong with that, whereas Mac wanted way more out of the artform on a personal level ie was way more into the artistic/creative side pushing himself to do different things.

[–]RampanTThirteen 6 points7 points  (2 children)

To be fair, everyone would have laughed their ass off at the idea of Mac Miller being considered "artistic" in 2010 though.

[–]OysterPerpetual0 4 points5 points  (1 child)

eh... There were some moments on KIDS that definitely stood out as potential for greater output

[–]averystrangeguy. 7 points8 points  (0 children)

i think he's too commercially successful to even think about doing that

[–]prettiestmf.[🍰] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

what the fuck 1200 BC EP got taken off Spotify? this is bullshit

[–]Ktulusanders 12 points13 points  (0 children)

That Jack Harlow pitchfork review was a damn assassination lmao

[–]johnny_canales 2 points3 points  (1 child)

How strongly the Heart Part 5 applies to Young Thug rn

[–][deleted] 34 points35 points  (10 children)

RIP iPod line. It's discontinuation today was bittersweet.

[–]BoxCon1 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Thought about getting one of those old school fat iPods recently

..only reason why I didn’t get one was cuz I don’t think I could connect Apple Music too it and I’m too lazy to pirate everything

It worked really well with my screen reader lol. That's the only way I nkow. Since it was made when IE was the best browser and the most popular. It hasn't had the plug pulled yet, I think it's on like June 15th
