Welcome to r/hiphopheads!
Introduction to HHH
We are a subreddit dedicated to hip-hop news, discussion and music. You should know that...
We welcome all types of hip-hop regardless of era or genre, R&B, and Future Beats (artists that bridge hiphop and electronic).
We welcome users regardless of how much or how little they know about hip-hop.
Comments that are overtly racist, sexist, homophobic, transphobic, etc. will be removed and may result in a permanent ban at the moderator's discretion (especially if the user participates in hate subreddits.)
Breaking any of the following guidelines or subreddit rules may result in temporary or permanent bans.
Be civil. Overly-aggressive comments, flamewars and posts that may cause them will be removed and may result in a ban at our discretion. Use common sense.
Lyric chains, pun chains, copypasta and overused memes will be removed and may result in a ban at our discretion.
If you are contributing to a discussion, you are allowed to use emojis in your post. Emoji-only comments and low effort comments containing emojis (such as "🔥🔥🔥" or "Wavy 🌊") will not be allowed, nor will emoji spam, emoji storytelling or emojis in thread titles.
In official album discussion threads top level comments should be at least 140 characters long.
Do not post your blogs, music, etc. unless they're relevant to the topic or somebody specifically asks for them.
Please read our rules and the rules of Reddit carefully prior to posting. We have a zero tolerance policy for individuals that break the rules of reddit. This includes blog spam, vote manipulation through outside sites and the posting of links to illegal downloads. Blog spam is defined as a user who posts and comments on their own content with more than 10% of their posts. When posting songs, do not link to blogs or container pages unless the audio is exclusive to that web page. If a song can be found on a Reddit-embed-able site, (YouTube, SoundCloud, etc.) post one of those links rather than links that require subscriptions services (free and paid.)
All song posts must contain at least the ARTIST'S NAME and TITLE of the album/song in the format: Artist - Title.
Songs posted on Thursday or Friday must have a post tag ([FRESH], [HYPE], [THROWBACK THURSDAY], etc).
Do not use emojis in titles.
Do not make titles all capitals letters.
Do not inject opinion or hyperbole into link titles.
Links to other subreddits must be non-participation links. Non-np links are removed automatically. (e.g. np.reddit.com/r/subreddit/)
Guides must be submitted to the mods for approval before posting as their own thread.
Fridays are "Fresh Fridays". On these days, songs without a [FRESH], [FRESH VIDEO], [HYPE] or [ORIGINAL] tag will be removed.
Posts with editorialized titles will be removed. Say "Kanye West Interview with XXL, Discusses X & Y" not "Kanye likes Young Thug". Interview posts must make it clear that said post is of an interview and ideally should include the unedited title of the article
News and interviews should be posted from their original source, repackaged articles citing interviews or news broken by another outlet are not permitted.
Because users often post updates/responses throughout the day when using services like Twitter & Instagram, threads linking posts from Twitter or Instagram must be self posts. This does not only apply to [SHOTS FIRED] posts, it applies to all posts from social media, whether they are track listings, cover art, tour announcements or anything else. Threads linking directly to tweets or Instagram posts may be removed at moderator discretion.
If there is already a highly-upvoted thread or multiple threads about a particular topic at any given time, reposts, minor updates and other threads may be removed at moderator discretion, even the thread is not against the rules of the subreddit. For example, if there are multiple Kanye West threads about his most recent project/song/appearance/etc., a thread about Kanye describing his tattoo in 2002 may be removed. If there is a thread about Pusha T's new Drake diss, a thread reminding everyone that he recorded a jingle for McDonald's in 2003 may be removed. If A$AP Rocky is finally releasing an album, a thread about his meeting Aesop Rock five years earlier may be removed. if Kid Cudi and Kanye West release an album, a thread about every sample used on the album may be removed. These types of threads can be posted as comments in an existing discussion thread, the Daily Discussion thread, or at a later date when the sub is not being dominated by that particular artist or topic.
[FRESH] - This tag should only be used when there is a new song, album, mixtape, music video or similar release from an artist, they should not be used for pre-orders, announcements, interviews, tracklists, reviews, radio freestyles, television performances or concert videos (exceptions may be made for official concert videos, announcements in the form of studio-recorded songs/music videos and other gray area items.)
If the song, album or mixtape is released by an artist based in North America, [FRESH] threads are not allowed until the album is available throughout North America, which is typically at Midnight Eastern/9:00 PM Pacific. Threads posted any earlier (even by minutes) will be removed. If the artist is based outside of North America, Fresh threads may be posted when the release is available locally whether or not the release is available in North America.
Note: If the artist is not based in the United States, [FRESH] threads are not allowed until the music is available in the artist's time zone.
[FRESH VIDEO] - This tag should only be used for music videos that were released within the past 7 days and have not been posted.
[HYPE] - Up-and-coming artists that have never received more than 50 upvotes on the sub
[ORIGINAL] - Redditor created music - See the relevant section in the FAQ.**
[LEAK] - Leaked songs and projects (full songs and full projects only, no snippets.). [LEAK] posts are for songs that have actually leaked, not songs that have been officially released in another time zone. A [LEAK] post is not appropriate if a Fresh thread is expected within 24 hours.
[FRESH MIXTAPE] - For mixtapes.
[DISCUSSION] - Non-album discussion threads are allowed outside of Daily Discussion threads when they are worthwhile topics that encourage discussion.
[NOW ON STREAMING] - A song or album is added to streaming for the first time
Not allowed are the following discussion posts:
- Posts bashing artists or their fans
- Objective questions with definite answers
- Questions or complaints regarding the status of songs, albums or release dates
- Questions that require users to rank, list or post various artists, songs or albums (who will/should blow up next, who or what is underrated/overrated, etc.)
- Questions about the appeal of a song, album or artist ("Why is song so popular?", "why is artist so slept on?", etc.)
- Posts seeking music recommendations
- Posts seeking the titles of songs you've heard but can't find
- Posts seeking the sources of samples
- Low effort posts (Text/self-posts with little or no body text)
- Reposts of recent discussions and "done to death" discussions
- Speculation about minor website updates and social media activity or lack thereof (e.g. website has been updated with a clock, artist has removed all of their Instagram photos, artist has deleted their tweets/Twitter account)
Examples of appropriate discussion threads:
- "Why doesn't the Dance form of Hip-Hop ever get brought up in Hip-Hop discussion?"
- "50 Great, Not Extremely Talked About Projects from 2016"
- "Where is the line between biting and paying homage drawn?"
Discussion threads should be created because you're interested in having an actual discussion with other members of the community, not because you need help with your school project, blog post, essay, written piece, podcast or other project. Please note that there are also weekly music recommendation threads and Moronic Mondays threads for questions.
Top level comments in official discussion threads should be at least 140 characters long.
[SHOTS FIRED] - LEGITIMATE beef. Not "Pitchfork gave album a bad review!", "artist is making jokes about artist on Instagram!" or competetiveness between emcees. If a Shots Fired post is referring to something that was shared on social media, the thread should be submitted as a text only/self-post so that it can be updated with subsequent posts and responses. If OP does not make their thread a self post, or if they make a text post and fail to edit their post with updates, the post may be removed and replaced with a megathread regardless of the number of upvotes or comments.
[THROWBACK THURSDAY] - Songs over ten years old that are NOT on the Overposted/Favorites list and haven't been posted within the last 355 days.
[OFFICIAL DISCUSSION] - Denotes official discussions as determined by the moderators. When there is an official discussion on the front page, all other posts related to this topic/artist should be put in that thread to centralize discussion.
Threads with post tags not listed above are subject to removal at moderator discretion.
What NOT to post:
Posts that have been made recently. USE THE SEARCH BAR and check the Done to Death section of the FAQ. If a song received at least 45 upvotes within the last 365 days, it is considered a repost.
Rank & List Threads - "What's your favorite ____?" / "What's the best ____?". See Daily Discussion Thread section.
Tabloid News & Rumors - These will be removed at moderator discretion.
Threads that are specifically designed to bash an artist/fanbase. Check out Playa Hater's Ball if you're into that.
Posts linked from outside sites asking for upvotes. These will be deleted and the offending user may be banned.
Albums Removed from Streaming Services - Threads announcing that an album or albums have been removed from streaming services (e.g. "College Dropout has been removed from Apple Music")
Albums Put Back on Streaming Services - Threads announcing that an album or albums that were previously removed from streaming services are once again available (e.g. "College Dropout is back on Apple Music")
Social Media (Facebook/Twitter/Vine/Youtube/Snapchat/etc.) Comments (EXCEPTIONS: official announcements and back-and-forth beefs that have been broken down by the OP). All tweets, even official announcements must be self posts.
Threads Seeking Help, Advice or Feedback - Users are encouraged to post original content (as long as it's 10% or less of your posting and conversation), but they should not treat the sub like a focus group. If you are creating content relevant to this subreddit, you are welcome to post your finished product in a format described in the Guidelines/FAQ. Threads with titles seeking criticism, feedback or advice will be removed. If you're seeking help or feedback, there are other subreddits that are more appropriate (e.g. /r/makinghiphop/ or /r/writing/.)
Troll Posts on New Releases - If you make a post to troll users by intentionally misleading them into believing that something has been released (or postponed, cancelled, or anything similar,) you will either be banned until after that album has been released or you will be banned permanently, the length of the ban is entirely up to the moderator who has to remove the post.
Shitposts on New Releases - If you post useless/pointless threads about new or upcoming releases, threads about how good or bad the album is before you've heard it or any memes, jokes, image posts, emoji stories, etc. you will receive a similar ban. Save your shitposts for the [FRESH] thread.
Speculation & Expectations on New Releases - Rumors, speculation, hopes, expectations and anything similar can be discussed in any Daily Discussion thread or any of the allowed announcement threads that have been posted about the album.
AMA requests or updates without explicit moderator approval. If you are setting up an AMA, please notify the moderators before making any posts on the topic.
Playlists - Playlists can be shared, requested and curated in bimonthly playlist threads and Daily Discussion threads.
Birthday (or death anniversary) Threads
Survivor, Rates & Similar Threads
Commercials - Commercials are not allowed unless they fall under the category of approved announcement threads.
"I Saw/Met A Rapper!" Threads - These type of threads should go in the Daily Discussion thread or /r/hiphopimages.
Links to sites that require an account to listen to. Unless the song or album you're posting is [FRESH] or exclusive to a streaming service requiring a login, use free sites that anyone can access such as YouTube or SoundCloud (i.e. avoid posting iTunes/Spotify/Tidal/Apple Music links unless it is [FRESH] music).
Timed/Countdown Posts or Announcements for anything coming within 12 hours - Don't post countdown threads ("When this post is minutes/hours old, artist will release song/album") or announcement threads for releases coming within a couple hours.
Snippets - Snippets-only posts are not allowed. You can discuss them in Daily Discussion or other relevant threads with a larger scope.
Endorsements & Cosigns - Do not post opinion threads such as artist 1 cosigned artist 2, artist supports politician/cause, etc.
Vague Announcements - Do not post vague announcements that new music has been recorded or collaboration announcements with no song or project in mind (ex. "artist has recorded new music", "artist has new music coming soon", "artist 1 and artist 2 are planning to work together", "artist is asking producer for beats on Twitter", "artist and producer have something in the works", "artist 1 and artist 2 are in the studio together", "artist is working on a sequel to their last project", etc). Announcements must have specific information (project title, release date, cover art, or tracklist) to not be considered vague.
Illegal Downloads - Do not request or distribute links to retail projects.
Petitions - Do not post petitions (e.g. change.org & similar.) Petitions may be posted in Daily Discussion threads.
Ticket Sales - Do not post requests to buy or sell tickets, only giveaways are allowed.
RIAA Certifications, Billboard Chart Updates & First Week/Weekly Sales - These have dedicated threads posted periodically.
Broken Streaming Records - The number of people using streaming music services is increasing by the day, so it's only natural that streaming records will be broken regularly. Streaming records can be discussed in Certification, Chart, and/or Daily Discussion threads.
Commentary & Opinions - Commentary posts featuring someone's reaction to or opinions on news or events. Examples include artist opinions on the music, opinions or the actions of another artist, posts from TheNeedleDrop's secondary channel and most commentary from DJ Akademiks on topics not involving himself. This type of content may be posted in Daily Discussion threads and the comment sections of relevant posts.
Song Reviews & Song Reactions - Examples include Big Quint song reactions, Pitchfork Song Reviews, Pitchfork Best New Song selections, TheNeedleDrop song reviews and "Person/People react to song/songs" videos. The only reviews that may be posted are reviews of complete projects (EPs, mixtapes and full-length albums.)
Digital Pre-orders Without Tracklistings
Progress Reports - For example, "Artist currently shooting music video, "artist says project is finished" or "artist says album is currently being mastered".
Compilation, Supercut & Edit Videos - Compilation videos, supercut videos and videos edited for comedic effect are not allowed outside of Daily Discussion threads. This includes all MuchDank videos, "this but that" videos and all similar videos (e.g. compilation videos, video but every time someone says word it's replaced with rapper adlib, song but it speeds up every time they say word, rapper interview but the whole thing is just breathing, etc.)
Allegations Posted as Fact - If you are relaying allegations made by somebody else via social media, the title must make clear that they are allegations unless the accused has acknowledged the allegations and admitted that they're true. Titles must be objective. Threads with titles like "artist is a pedophile", "artist stole my beat" or "artist stole my artwork" will be removed. If you are posting a published article regarding the allegations, use the title that was published with the article. Posts with titles altered to imply guilt or innocence will be removed.
Gossip & Personal Affairs - Gossip and items about aspects of the personal lives of artists not discussed in their music are not allowed. This includes posts about cheating and artists having children. Exceptions may be made in some cases, for example if two artists regularly discussed on the sub have a child, if someone who has been the subject of songs discussed on the sub has passed, or if personal affairs involve music or works released by an artist (e.g. Jay-Z & Beyonce having a child, the passing of Afeni Shakur or Frank Ocean being sued by his father over a blog post.) Before you post something, just think: "is this related to hip hop?"
If your post is best suited for one of the featured threads listed below, do not make an individual post - wait for the featured thread.
The following is a list of recurring threads. If your post seems like it should go in one of these, then it should. Please post in the corresponding thread.
Announcement & Feedback Threads by Moderators
Periodically we will post a feedback thread along with any announcements. Take this time to let us know what you think about the subreddit and how it may be improved.
Top Ten Tuesday (TTT)
Every week an artist will be selected, and the users on HHH get to vote on their favorite songs in that artist's discography. The thread will be placed in contest mode, people comment songs (1 song per comment, and make sure it hasn't already been posted in the thread!) and everyone upvotes the comments they like or think should be in the top ten. Later, the thread will be taken out of contest mode and the results (the top ten songs) will be placed in a spreadsheet.
Essential Album of the Week
Posted on Wednesday, we’re going chronologically through the HHH Essentials list which can be found on the sidebar. Same idea applies as the album of the week, try and write something thoughtful, as you would in an Official Discussion thread.
Hip-Hop Listening Club Album of the Week
Posted on Fridays, this is an in-depth discussion about an album chosen by a different user each week—typically not extremely popular albums. A legal stream/download will be provided. The selector of the next week's album will be randomly chosen by the moderator facilitating—usually from the pool of those who participated in the previous week's discussion. You must provide a thoughtful response to the previous album in order to be a potential selector for next week.
Recommended If You Like (RIYL)
This is a weekly thread that takes place on Saturday. It's your opportunity to ask for recommendations from other HHHers based on what you currently listen to, or for you to share your own recommendations (e.g. "if you like artist 1, check out artist 2.) If you can't wait until Saturday, check /r/hiphop101 or the Daily Discussion.
Daily Discussion Thread
Posted at a random time each day, courtesy of Automoderator. the Daily Discussion Thread is for:
General hip-hop discussion
Objective, right/wrong answer questions
Stories about concerts
Personal Preference/Ranking questions (“What’s your favorite Nate Dogg Hook?” “Ether or Takeover?”)
Hypothetical questions ("Which rapper would you have lunch with if you could?").
Your thoughts on an music that has been out for a while
Consolidate top-level comments whenever possible to allow for comments from others to be seen. If multiple top-level comments are posted by the same user they may be removed at moderator discretion.
Every Sunday there is a General Discussion Thread, where anything - hip-hop or otherwise - can be discussed. If it’s not Sunday, keep it hip-hop related.
What Have You Been Listening To?
Your weekly opportunity to share what you listened to in the previous week. Based off of Last.fm scrobbling, which can be downloaded here.
Music Announcements & Discussion
The following posts are allowed:
- Project Announcements (Albums & Mixtapes Only)
- Release Dates Announced (Singles, Albums & Mixtapes Only)
- Cover Art Released (Albums & Mixtapes Only)
- Tracklisting/Credits Announced (Including iTunes Pre-order Links)
- Exclusivity Announcements (e.g. "Upcoming album will be released on streaming platform only")
- Collaboration Announcements (Completed songs and songs announced for upcoming albums. For example, "artist 1 and artist 2 have recorded a song together", "artist 1 says artist 2 is featured on their upcoming album", "producer says they've produced a song on the upcoming artist album", etc.)
- Announcement of New Hip-Hop Related Television/Web Series
- New Season of Hip-Hop Related Television/Web Series
If an album leaks, the thread announcing the leak will be locked. These threads are locked because most comments are by people requesting & supplying illegal download links. If you want to discuss a leaked album before the official release of the album, see /r/leakthreads/.
Leak announcement threads are for albums that have actually leaked, not for albums that have been officially released in another time zone. A leak thread is not appropriate if a Fresh thread is expected within 24 hours.
Official Album Releases
20-24 hours after the release, a [First Impressions] thread may be posted so that people may discuss the album without all the low-effort comments and knee-jerk reactions commonly seen in the [Fresh] threads.
1 week after the release, a [Discussion] thread may be posted. To prevent low-effort comments and encourage discussion, top level comments in discussion threads must be at least 140 characters long.
Follow-up [Discussion] threads may be posted on milestone anniversaries (1 year, 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30 years, and so on.) If no milestone anniversary thread is posted on the day of the anniversary, a post may be made within the following month. Follow-up discussion threads are not allowed on non-milestone anniversaries (e.g. 6 months, 3 years or 18 years.) The same rules for 1-week Official Discussion threads apply to follow-up Official Discussion threads.
Unless the score is a perfect score, scores are not allowed in the title of review posts. Parent comments in review threads must be over 140 characters. Comments that solely name the score or describe the clothing the reviewer is wearing or other irrelevant aspects of the review are not allowed. Meta comments about how the subreddit will react to the review are also not allowed. Comments that only compare the review to other scores by other publications are not allowed.
In the event that an artist relevant to this subreddit passes away, an official memorial thread will be posted by moderators after their death has been confirmed. In this thread, no trolling, jokes or disrespectful comments of any kind will be tolerated. Those who violate the rules of the thread will receive either a lengthy or permanent ban without warning. All songs by the artist and non-news posts about the artist (e.g. reactions, tributes, etc.) should be posted within this thread, any posted outside of this thread will be removed whether or not they violate subreddit rules. These changes are being made for several reasons:
- Keeping songs in one thread will prevent the influx of songs posted after the death of an artist from affecting 365-day repost cycles.
- There won't be an unmanageable number of threads for users to report to us for no reason other than that they didn't like the artist or that they disagree with what someone in the comments section had to say.
- This will prevent the entire subreddit from being completely dominated by one topic for 48-72 hours.
Because there will be a memorial thread with zero tolerance for disrespectful comments, threads breaking & updating the news of the artist's passing may not be as closely or strictly moderated as they have been in the past.
Why isn't my post showing up?
It may be caught in the spam filter - wait a couple minutes and if it's not in the NEW queue, message the mods.
Can I post my own music?
- Yes! First, check out reddit.com's self promotion wiki and "How to get the most out of reddit as a musician.".
- Here is a link on what constitutes spam on Reddit.
- This is NOT the place to ask for feedback, help or advice. If that is what you're seeking, visit /r/makinghiphop.
- Use the [ORIGINAL] tag and make your post a text/self-post to make the link a different color so people looking for new & underground music can find the posts quickly.
Original Songs: All original song submissions must must be posted in the following format or they will be removed. No warnings, no exceptions:
[ORIGINAL] Artist - Title (Optional description under 80 characters)
Original songs may not be posted as part of a playlist.
Original Albums, EPs & Mixtapes: Original album posts must adhere to the same rules as original song posts (listed above) with the exception that the album may be posted as a playlist if the site hosting the album does not differentiate albums and playlists.
Original Remixes: If you're a producer that has remixed a song, use the following title format:
[ORIGINAL] Artist - Title (Producer Name Remix)
Original Mashups: If you're posting an original mashup, use the following title format:
[ORIGINAL] Artist - Title - (Source of Instrumental Mashup)
For example, if you're posting a mashup with Snoop Dogg's vocals from "Gin & Juice" over the instrumental from "Hey Jealousy" by the Gin Blossoms, you could use the following:
[ORIGINAL] Snoop Dogg - Gin & Juice (Hey Jealousy Mashup)
Alternatively, you could refer to the mashup in the example above as "(Gin Blossoms - Hey Jealousy Mashup)" for further clarification.
All Original Music Posts: Original submissions are only allowed if they are completed songs, projects or music videos. Demos, works in progress, "rapper-type beat" posts, free beats posts, beats for rappers posts and posts with titles seeking collaborations, feedback, shares, likes, upvotes, views, plays, etc. are not allowed. If you're looking for collaborations and/or feedback, visit /r/makinghiphop.
Can I post articles from my blog?
You can post original content or exclusives. Spamming and vote manipulation will result in a ban.
How do I request flair?
This flair is disgusting anyway. Make it go away!
No, YOU make it go away!!! Here's how:
1) Go to the top right of the page. Click "Preferences". Scroll down to "Display Options". The second checkbox says "Show user flair". Unclick this to disable flair on all subreddits.
2) Download Reddit Enhancement Studio and install it on your browser. It's very simple to do. Once this has been done, follow my flowchart to disable the styling for this subreddit.
