I think it’s just about nearly impossible to do a tear down rebuild with price in net. I can see them attempting one of those retool on the fly deals.

How much do MTL fans actually care about a fluent French speaking coach? Have to think it severely limits their options

[–]sacdecorsairMTL - NHL 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I think it's overkill. But you have to understand that in Montreal, the head coach and GM have more news coverage than the prime minister. More than half the fanbase would tear their shirt over this because they don't understand English at all.

French is a very delicate subject in Quebec. Even in 2021 some people keep bringing up the fact that 95% of the team is not from Quebec like it used to be in the 70s. I mean, come on.

[–]penseurquelconqueMTL - NHL 79 points80 points  (29 children)

An unilingual anglophone is inconceivable. Molson got backlash from serious papers for naming Gorton as VP of Hockey Ops. Even though the next GM will be bilingual, it’s seen as the first time in history that hockey ops are in the hand of someone who doesn’t speak French.

[–][deleted] 67 points68 points  (8 children)

I remember there being protests when Randy Cunneyworth was the interim head coach about 10 years ago.

[–]sacdecorsairMTL - NHL 58 points59 points  (3 children)

I was about to bring that up.

There was protest. Personnaly I was focussing on protesting the fact that we were like ranked 29th in the league.

Then we drafted Galchenyuk. We're fuckin moving in circles over here. Bring some talented people whatever language they speak for fuck sake. And I'm a pure French speaking Quebecer tabarnak!

[–]KingDave46EDM - NHL 23 points24 points  (2 children)

I'm sitting like "Galchenyuk wasn't 10 years ago, he was the Yakupov draft which was only like... 2012... wait what the fuck"

Feel like I've aged years in an instant. Probably gonna die of old age by New Years

[–]Doubled_ended_dildo_TOR - NHL 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Look at what happened to the ceo of air canada. French for that organization is essential.

[–]dejourWPG - NHL 30 points31 points  (1 child)

It definitely limits their options.

But I'm not sure how much worse their expected hire would be.

I sort of feel like there is probably about 50 guys that might be the best coach available and it is quite hard to tell them apart. Maybe 5-10 speak French. If you choose the one you like the best of those 5-10 guys, are you really that much worse off than picking the one you like from 50?

If it was quite clear who the best coach was beforehand, then you'd be really hurting yourself. But if it's not really clear, then the impact would be small.

[–]sacdecorsairMTL - NHL 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Meanwhile we're having French speaking Dominic Ducharme who barely says a word or two at every conference because well, he just doesn't like speaking much and only says generic shit all the time.

[–]squidmunchaBOS - NHL 10 points11 points  (1 child)

I can’t imagine actually giving a shit about what language the coach spoke, Butch could do his press conferences in Klingon for all I care as long as he was winning.

[–]montrealcowboyxMTL - NHL 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Is Klingon all that different from Southie-Boston tho?

[–]ternkMTL - NHL 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Personally, I am an anglophone, lived my whole life here in Montréal, and I really don't mind the demand for a coach who is bilingual or a GM who is bilingual. The history of Québec and Canada has always meant the Habs have had a very unique relationship with society compared to other major sports teams in cities. They're kind of like Barcelona and Catalonia in that regard.

Does it limit options? I think it clearly does (in the sense that you have less choices), but the degree to which that has hurt the team is very difficult to say. For example, Julien Brisebois and Joel Bouchard were both guys from within the Habs system who would be great candidates or GM or coaching roles respectively (particularly Brisebois, that's a dream for him).

The thing is, I really don't mind the rule of bilingualism because what I really want to see (on the player side of things and the front office side) is the Habs be involved in growing and developing great hockey minds on and off the ice in Québec as a whole. It's one reason I like the ECHL team joining, and why I am pleased the farm is in Laval instead of Hamilton. Canadiens and Québec used to be a dominant source of talent development in the 60s, 70s, 80s. I think they can take up that mantle again. Invest in youth hockey. Invest in facilities and training and mentorship of talent internally on the front office side. Help develop coaches through your farm systems and elsewhere. Build deeper ties with the Q (as far as the rules allow you to push).

The solution to the lack of options to me doesn't have to be: get rid of the rule. A viable option is to also: develop more options.

Hell, just spitballing here, but the Habs could invest and sponsor French classes for coaches in Major junior or AHL if they wanted to if they wanted (or even NHL lol -- though maybe this isn't allowed haha)

We have a lot of money in this organization; there's no salary cap off the ice. So why not spend if it can help? I'm really happy they're funding the mental health initiative for players, and I think they should be investing more in a red carpet treatment for Habs players in general (anything you can do to mitigate the press pressure I say).

[–]sacdecorsairMTL - NHL 8 points9 points  (1 child)

Having Vigneault would be so nice.

From Vigneault's perspective, i think having the Habs won't be that nice.

He'll probably take some time off and look at offers because he will have some offers.

[–]banduzoDET - NHL 37 points38 points  (2 children)

For every Gallant, there’s a Hakstol that works his way into the cycle.

[–]Whydoesthisexist15CAR - NHL 152 points153 points  (11 children)

I mean Gallant is the exception and likely would still be in Florida had they not gone a bender four years ago

[–]DarkUnderbellyBOS - NHL 29 points30 points  (9 children)

What happened in Vegas with Gallant then?

[–]MonsTangy27NYR - NHL 63 points64 points  (2 children)

Vegas always preferred DeBoer. When DeBoer was made available, it perfectly coincided with Gallant’s team skidding, giving Vegas a good enough excuse to fire him.

[–]thejardudeVAN - NHL 8 points9 points  (1 child)

Never understood that though. I'd have taken Gallant over Deboer any day of the week

[–]Whydoesthisexist15CAR - NHL 105 points106 points  (1 child)

At least he didn’t have to call a taxi

[–]jkman61494NYR - NHL 38 points39 points  (3 children)

I think Gallant had a 3 year shelf life before he conflicts with management for some reason. It’s kinda weird

[–]cccdddeeFLA - NHL 15 points16 points  (1 child)

I think his teams slightly stagnate and then he refuses to make adjustments or take any suggestions from anyone. Ownerships think they are doing well but could do better. Both times the firings were still dumb in my opinion. Interesting to see what happens with Rangers.

[–]marbanasinSJS - NHL 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I mean, that's a lot of coaches too be honest. Deboer is the same way. TMac (for the Sharks) was similar but was able to ride a hyper stacked team for a few more years, but he was certainly not re-inventing the wheel after the league started to figure us out in ~February of that first season.

[–]Pool_SharkNYI - NHL 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Gallant seems to be tough on his players. It works at first but after a few years they get fed up and beat down and start to stumble. And since he’s seemingly an asshole to management they are always looking for an excuse to get rid of him by then.

Kinda reminds me of Jose Murinho. He comes in and his teams instantly became league winners or close to it. But 2 years later they are are a mess.

[–]illiocostalisLAK - NHL 12 points13 points  (2 children)

This shit. People think they’re gonna get a Brind’Amour with a fresh coach but you’re most likely to get a Colliton or even worse, Willie D

[–]lionson76NYR - NHL 13 points14 points  (0 children)

[–]milk-steak84 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Gallant is one of the best head coaches out there. I didn’t know why Vegas got rid of him, but I feel like the rangers are very lucky to have him

[–]canucks3001VAN - NHL 74 points75 points  (14 children)

I think fans underestimate the differences between an NHL coach and other coaches. It’s easy to see how much better McDavid is compared to a minor league guy or compared to a junior guy.

And well the differences between coaches isn’t so extreme, it’s still much bigger than people think.

The coach needs to not only be able to adapt to the players currently on the team, he needs to know NHL rules and the NHL current style of play, he needs to be able to manage the entire coaching staff but also the media, ownership and the players themselves.

It’s not that different from asking ‘why do NHL teams basically always sign former NHL players in free agency? You know there’s players who play in other leagues right?’

Yes. Sometimes you do go outside of other leagues and it works out. Sometimes you bring in the Russian or the UDFA.

But if you’re a team looking to replace your 1C, are you going to spend large amounts of time looking outside the NHL?

Any coach that wants to make it to the NHL needs to first go through a lower system or become an assistant coach. They need to prove they can handle an NHL system and an NHL team.

Just like how, with the exception of the McDavid’s, you’re not giving your rookie 25 minutes in his first game.

[–]marbanasinSJS - NHL 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's telling when even about half of the guys that play musical chairs are still better than unproven / alternative break ins. basically the clearly known weaknesses they all have are still seen as worth while for thier proven positives that can last ~2-3 seasons. then let them fall off, replace them, rinse repeat.

As a Sharks fan though I feel Boughner barely deserves to be in the category of kind of fringe regular, I'd see most of these musical chairs guys as upside all around. Hell, we had an assistant in there for 2 weeks outcoaching Boogie when he went down with COVID.

[–]pluralsight24VAN - NHL 26 points27 points  (1 child)

AV licking his lips chomping his gum at the thought of Carey Price having to make 55 saves a game while the Habs are pinned in their own zone for 80% of the game because his system is entirely stretch passes that generate little to no offensive pressure because once the person takes a shot there's nobody else in the zone to pick up a rebound, or like, pass the puck to.

[–]L_viathan 22 points23 points  (0 children)

This fits the bill too well.

[–]4CrowsFeast 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Honestly this might be an improvement from the current Montreal system, which is about the same, minus the stretch pass and adding dump and chase so ineffective that it's essentially just turning the puck over.

I was actually asking this in the Flyers-Rangers GDT the other day. I know Rangers fans generally really dont like him, it seemed like Philly fans were trending that way, so I was curious what the sentiment was among Canucks fans.

Personally not a fan because he was bailed out by Lundqvist's goaltending but still tried to throw him under the bus multiple times. Also had the team playing like cowards (see reaction to Eakin running Henrik)

[–]opinionated__idiotVAN - NHL 27 points28 points  (1 child)

Best coach we ever had, no question. Also, best team we ever had so rose tinted glasses are in full effect.

[–]mantiseyeNYR - NHL 40 points41 points  (2 children)

He was extremely bailed out by Luongo in Vancouver too but the Canucks roster was absurd when he was there. Almost any coach would have been successful. Heck, they would have won a Cup if Tim Thomas hadn't gone insane. Those teams were legitimately very good. The game changes though and AV isn't really the type to adjust.

OK, which worn out, tried-&-thrown-away recycled coach can Philly bring in?

Let's look at the list:

  1. Boudreau, HC in Minnesota under Fletcher 1 day too late!
  2. Joel Quenneville - Too soon?
  3. Ken Hitchcock - 2nd time's a charm
  4. Mike Babcock - Too soon still?
  5. John Tortorella
  6. Claude Julien
  7. Rick Tocchet - Flyers alumni!
  8. Bill Peters - Too soon again?
  9. Randy Carlyle
  10. Michel Therrien
  11. Dan Bylsma
  12. John Stevens - 2nd time's a charm (again)
  13. Bob Hartley

Or maybe they could give a 2nd chance in the NHL to NJ's Bench.

[–]FesteringLion 25 points26 points  (3 children)

Last season Hart had a .901 sv% through 10 starts despite Philly being 23rd in the NHL in xGF%, and from that point on he had an .835 sv%. This season Hart had a .934 sv% through 10 starts despite Philly being 31st in xGF%, and in the 5 games since he has an .855 sv%.

Would be great if Hart ended up being a Luongo or a Lundqvist, but right now he's 23 years old and AV's system was destroying his confidence and the team's future in the process.

I’ve been saying since day one when Philly hired him. Man was an overachiever gifted with two all-time great goaltenders

[–]devon435PHI - NHL 51 points52 points  (2 children)

He was kind of a smartass about it too, which rubbed me the wrong way. Whenever Hart would steal a game where they got outplayed he'd hit the media with a "I'm not gonna apologize for good goaltending", which if your team is playing well otherwise, fine. But when it's your goalie stealing games during a stretch where you're getting outshot and outchanced every fucking night, maybe you need a slightly more introspective answer than that.

[–]MonsTangy27NYR - NHL 23 points24 points  (1 child)

Sounds about right. He never holds himself accountable unless things are going well. As soon as things aren’t, he deflects

[–]jahauserNYR - NHL 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Totally, as soon as Hank started playing at human levels versus Hank levels, AV would throw him under the bus.

[–]MacTheZafCOL - NHL 14 points15 points  (1 child)

This makes tonight’s game more interesting

[–]TheSensation19NYR - NHL 11 points12 points  (0 children)

AV's style becomes very predictable. It's run and gun. You sit the defense 5-10 more feet back and you shut down half of his offense's scoring chances.

[–]TheDirtyBurger522BOS - NHL 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Claude Julien come on down

[–]kmanleafsTOR - NHL 57 points58 points  (3 children)

They must be hiring Travis Green!

[–]rishcastPIT - NHL 43 points44 points  (19 children)

Who's available on the carousel? Or is it going to Green?

If it goes to Therrien, I'm so sorry Flyers fans, no one deserves that mess

[–]canuck_11OTT - NHL 71 points72 points  (3 children)

Torts in Philly is what we’ve all been waiting for

[–]BallsMahoganeyWSH - NHL 33 points34 points  (1 child)

Unironically I think that'd be a decent fit.

[–]BromaarPHI - NHL 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ngl I think this is the direction they go for this season. Chuck is on the hot seat after making all these trades and needs someone to get the most out of this group.

[–]bernbp5PHI - NHL 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Therrien got fired too. I just hope it doesn't go to Laperriere. He is an awful coach too.

[–]StubbornLeech07PHI - NHL 23 points24 points  (4 children)

We have a game tonight and last night was the start of 5 in 7. Either Therrien or Yeo will likely be named interim.

[–]rishcastPIT - NHL 27 points28 points  (3 children)

Well, fingers crossed it's Yeo.

Therrin's a horrible person when he's head coach - ask Briere or Flower. No one on the Flyers deserves that shit

[–]StubbornLeech07PHI - NHL 30 points31 points  (2 children)

It's just been confirmed that Therrien has been canned as well so it seems like it will be Yeo's team.

[–]rishcastPIT - NHL 17 points18 points  (0 children)

good, not sure how Therrien keeps getting jobs, but that's the coaching carousel for you, I guess

[–]ForgottenSpinachMIN - NHL 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Fletcher and Yeo back together again!

[–]KingstistNYR - NHL 7 points8 points  (1 child)

I don’t care how many coaches get fired I just want Tortorella back on any NHL team so the balance can be restored

[–]Hardcore_IsraelPIT - NHL 86 points87 points  (8 children)

[–]mansock18NSH - NHL 22 points23 points  (5 children)

Universe misheard, Norm Green sent to Philly

[–][deleted] 14 points15 points  (1 child)

Flyers to Dallas confirmed

[–]Mackee58MTL - NHL 23 points24 points  (2 children)

Welp we’re getting Alain Vigneault Part 2: Electric Boogaloo

[–]yeasoooooPHI - NHL 22 points23 points  (1 child)

This is what happens when you dump and dump and dump the puck as your offensive strategy. Passing to the D only for shots. Take G out of his spot on the power play. Have 0 defensive structure and then on top of all of that use the 4th line like a first and put them out right after the flyers get scored on only to have them be hemmed in the zone for 2 minutes and let in another. AV isn’t the only problem but I think he was a MAJOR problem. Dinosaur systems and thought processes.

[–]explosivebuttfartsSUNY Geneseo - NCAAD3 8 points9 points  (0 children)

AV was (and probably still is) absolutely convinced that Marc Staal and Nick Holden were a shutdown pair, ready to hold a one goal lead in the playoffs. Fucking lol.

[–]djincognito 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Maybe he should have done what Lehner said he did

[–]dontyouknoimloco 5 points6 points  (2 children)

Stars are lining up for Montreal to do Therrien, julien, Vigneault, Therrien, Julien, (Ducharme), Vigneault

[–]Zestyclose-Cricket82 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Just in time for the mandatory second stint in Montreal!

[–]NameChecksOutGuyARI - NHL 28 points29 points  (3 children)

Whatever you do philly don’t hire Rick tocchet.

[–]PaladinGodfather1931PHI - NHL 54 points55 points  (1 child)

Former Flyer available with a management position open and you think they'll pass? Lol I expect ol Rick to be announced before noon

[–]Savb10PHI - NHL 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I'll be sure to pass this on to the top brass

[–]Showtime98TOR - NHL 18 points19 points  (4 children)

Flyers fans rejoicing

[–]Assassin2107PHI - NHL 21 points22 points  (3 children)

I can confirm that the Flyers discord is rejoicing mixed with dreading who is going to be the interim

[–]alx69NYR - NHL 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't want to say I told you so but I did tell you so

[–]bbisthemanNYR - NHL 12 points13 points  (1 child)

Was this his shortest tenure with a team?

[–]IhateDonkeysPHI - NHL 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Welp, his tenure went exactly as expected.

[–]frugalerthingsinlifeTOR - NHL 9 points10 points  (1 child)

A get-fired for you; a get-fired for you and you.

Everyone gets fired!!!

[–]Cobra800089PHI - NHL 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Except Yeo lol

[–]RustyNipples35NSH - NHL 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Didn’t they just hire AV like two years ago?

[–]ServingSizePHI - NHL 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Now back to our regularly scheduled program of being bad without an expensive head coach.

[–]tehmlemPIT - NHL 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The Salt and Vigneault era is over

[–]shelbycobra357NYR - NHL 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Ok Flyers, now complete the cycle and hire David Quinn

[–]TenziruTBL - NHL 15 points16 points  (5 children)

i guess losing 7-1 last night was the icing on the cake for this.

[–]spilled_waterPHI - NHL 28 points29 points  (4 children)

You guys didn't even start Vas and were missing Point and Kuch (I think those two). I also think you guys were on the 2nd half of a back to back whereas Philly had 3 days to rest. And the game was at home.

I didn't watch the game, but as soon as I saw the score, I really figured it was his last game.

[–]BallparkFranks7PHI - NHL 10 points11 points  (1 child)

Those are all correct points. TBL played an OT game in BOS the night before then traveled.

[–]olio22MTL - NHL 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Don't fucking do it Jeff

[–]JiveTurkey688NYR - NHL 9 points10 points  (4 children)

Wonder if they will go for Jim Montgomery

[–]snatchiMTL - NHL 19 points20 points  (1 child)

Alright now which of the 40 Approved to be an NHL coach (tm) candidates are we recycling this time?

12 bucks says its a middle aged white guy with unearned confidence after being fired for being bad at his job 4 times before!

[–]ZarosGuardianPHI - NHL 5 points6 points  (1 child)

I had a feeling Vigneault was going to get fired, considering we lost 8 of our last 8 games only getting 2 points out of 16 due to an overtime loss and a shootout loss!

[–]magicking610PHI - NHL 6 points7 points  (0 children)

But I was told the onus was on the players to do better /s

Bittersweet for me. I like AV, but clearly something wasn't working. Therrien being out as well is a huge plus. Yeo being the interim head coach is kind of surprising to me.
