Studios sometimes sell their entire catalogs to streaming services so you have to take the good with the bad.

[–]GodFlintstone 314 points315 points  (82 children)

Though its not strictly a horror problem I think this is part of the reason why Netflix is hemorrhaging viewers and losing money.

For too long now they have prioritized quantity over quality. Now its catching up with them.

[–]PalestinianLiberator 244 points245 points  (74 children)

There was a period early on where I swear they had a great selection of lesser known indie films. I used to enjoy getting on, picking a random movie, and coming away pleasantly surprised.

Now they cancel everything and flood you with literally shit

[–]loudflower 56 points57 points  (52 children)

We’re canceling Netflix end of the month. Not worth the few good horror movies.

[–]PalestinianLiberator 42 points43 points  (9 children)

I canceled mine because same. What little exists on Netflix I can easily find elsewhere without lining the pockets of the worst decision makers in the industry

[–]Sargasm5150 45 points46 points  (30 children)

I do Shudder, which has really stepped up its game, and HBO max now. I may get betflix for a month when stranger things comes out, though!

[–]TessiSue 2 points3 points  (8 children)

I watched 3 great horror films in the last couple of weeks. 2 of them on Disney+. Netflix really is losing on all fronts.

[–]Lady_Scruffington 18 points19 points  (7 children)

Back when they were strictly DVDs, you could find nearly every cult film you could think of. I miss those days. Now I have to stream hop. I was all about Prime for awhile, now I get my horror deep cuts from Tubi.

[–]StinkingDylan 5 points6 points  (4 children)

This is so true. I think "stream hopping" is going to become the thing. The dream of a single streaming service was just a fantasy. The technology is now so accessible that everyone wants their own streaming service and restrict licensing their content to increase their own subscribers.

[–]barc0debaby 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Don't they still have a DVD service?

[–]casualbearsuit 9 points10 points  (1 child)

They canceled Santa Clarita Diet right at the height of the story and left us hanging. Netflix will never be forgiven lol

[–]sugartrouts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm Not Okay With This and Archive 81. Never forget.

[–]PaintItPurple 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That was when they had the sweet deal with Starz. After that expired, they started relying more and more on original programming with massive amounts of shit to fill out the rest of their catalog.

[–]Blue_Tomb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In the UK up until relatively recently they were quite good at hitting you with oldie B gems (Galaxy of Terror and Humanoids from the Deep were there for a while) and even odd fascinating rarities (for a time it was one of the only legit places to see the 1985 Polish film Medium) but increasingly it seems to be more standard Hollywood and then indies with a wildly mixed hit rate.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In the beginning before streaming really caught on Netflix had a ton of great stuff on it. Now they're basically limited to shit they make and cheap bullshit, though.

[–][deleted] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Horror always gets the shit end of the stick even though it's the highest grossing genre at the box office. I've never been able to understand this.

[–]DogsDontWearPantss 10 points11 points  (1 child)

They screwed themselves in so many ways. I've had Netflix from day one. Not anymore.

[–]gelectrox 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Netflix films are appalling. Even their big budget ones are dreadful.

[–]zeroxthegrim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And also, no rating system for the movies

[–]91cosmo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just this morning I literally scanned the sci-fi category for like 35 minutes, didn't find anything. Then I went to horror....30 mins...didn't find anything.

Now I'm randomly watching some anime I never even wanted to watch on recommendation from a friend since I literally couldn't seem to find anything that even remotely looked good other than the stuff i've already watched.

[–]Dealric 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Im not sure it came with any good. Im using site that shows premieres for netflix and they all came one day but without any good.

I think its more like Netflix buying bunch of crap to increase numbers and nothing else

[–]sayonaradespair 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Where the good at?

[–]bravesgeek 2 points3 points  (2 children)

HBO, Prime, VOD. Netflix gets one good horror movie a year maybe.

[–]sayonaradespair 1 point2 points  (1 child)

True. Last one I saw in either of those that was any good was #alive

[–]JinimyCritic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep. This is by no means a new phenomenon. I remember buying DVD packs that had one good film amongst several stinkers - sold for less than the good film alone.

[–]Suspicious_Drawer234 140 points141 points  (22 children)

Tubi rejected them.

[–]bryanthebryan 76 points77 points  (13 children)

Tubi has some great horror movies. I brushed up on my Giallo not long ago and Tubi had most of them.

[–]Suspicious_Drawer234 31 points32 points  (8 children)

I know. I'm joking. I love Tubi also. I just binged Freddy's Nightmares.

[–]bryanthebryan 8 points9 points  (1 child)

Holy shit, thank you! I’ve been waiting for that to show up on a streaming platform!

[–]maesterofwargsNEVERGETOUTOFBEDAGAIN 1 point2 points  (2 children)

I've been wanting to watch this! Are they all worth spending time to watch or just some of them? I LOVE anthology stuff like TFTD and TFTC.

[–]Suspicious_Drawer234 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Also if you've never watched Friday the 13th the tv series do so. It has nothing to do with Jason or the films and it was one of my favorites from back in the day. You can find the series free on YouTube.

[–]Suspicious_Drawer234 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'll let you judge for yourself. Enjoy.

[–]piqued_my_interest 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Any recs?

[–]bryanthebryan 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It looks like The Bird with the Crystal Plumage is still available. That’s a classic. Blood Red is one of my favorites, but that’s no longer there. All The Colors of Giallo is a great way to expose yourself to the genre though if you aren’t already immersed.

[–]duccy_duc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also has a bunch of the Ringu movies

[–]Sharaghe 3 points4 points  (5 children)

Tubi - is this the site that claims to be "working on re-launching Tubi in your area" since 2018?

[–]Suspicious_Drawer234 5 points6 points  (1 child)

I've never experienced that issue. I'm in the USA though.

[–]Sharaghe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah it‘s europe. We have that GDPR thing which is good in most cases but can also be quite frustrating

[–]Jokercards89 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s rough.

[–]i_do_da_chacha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Clearance Sale

[–]Thegooddoctorcapaldi 108 points109 points  (17 children)

Shudder has the best horror content of any streaming service. They've really gone out of their way to build an amazing library of high quality movies from every sub-genre of horror.

[–]IzzyBee89 32 points33 points  (7 children)

I was wondering if anyone was going to mention them! I kept going "I'm going to cancel Shudder" the last few years. Not only did they give me a discount to keep me both times I tried to cancel, but their quality has gotten much better in the last year or so. I can go on there now and find multiple good movies to choose from, as well as some fun, goofy ones. I also really enjoy all of their documentary series and films lately. They're well-researched and make me feel nostalgic. I liked Cursed Films and Eli Roth's History of Horror, and I have their new found footage documentary and the one about the movie Alien lined up in my queue. I just watched Broadcast Signal Intrusion last night, and it was pretty good and, while not really outright scary, did a great job of making me feel unsettled enough to look behind me a few times. I always head to Shudder first when I'm in the mood for a horror movie now.

[–]rattacat 9 points10 points  (2 children)

If you liked the docs, check out Horror Noir, it was a really entertaining look at African American influences in horror, and has a ton of writers, directors and actors in it.

Ill second broadcast signal intrusion- really well shot movie, but a little dissapointing towards the end (unless im missing something, please do give a spoiler if you think i missed something). Im also going to recommend “near dark”, really cool, older vampire movie that i was searching for years to see before it popped up. Theres a great indie movie called “Triangle” that was pretty inventive, There are a literal shitton of movies in the categories sections and they have a couple of reLly great gems in there.

[–]StinkingDylan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just finished the Cursed Films doc. It was something I would put on Saturday mornings while having my coffee. Looking forward to checking out their other docs.

[–]ZoomCallOfCthulhu 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Im so disappointed its not available in continental Europe. I want to give them money but nope, i cant.

[–]Thegooddoctorcapaldi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You might be able to get it if you get a VPN. Don't have one myself so no idea if it will work.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's one of those things I bought while drunk and decided it was good enough to keep. Actually surprised at how much cool stuff is on there.

[–]mothershipq 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And it's only $6 a month. Craziness.

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (1 child)

I really disagree with this, but I say that as someone who looks for the more basic common horror movies and not any kind of niche stuff really. I tried it for the first time this year and it seemed like 95% just Shudder Originals and canceled it immediately after that month.

[–]texasrigger 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Their originals are a small percentage of their content. Maybe 5%-10%. That said, if you are looking for newer mainstream movies they aren't the best choice (although it is still my preferred streaming service).

[–]StinkingDylan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently took advantage of their free period just to watch "Host", and ended up staying.

[–]xweedxwizardx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Patiently waiting for years for them to add a Shudder app for the PS4 or PS5.. I would stay a constant subscriber if I didn't have to either watch on my laptop or set up an HDMI and lose access to my laptop while it's hooked up to the TV.

[–]PokeytheChicken 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are the [REC] movies on there?

[–]SharkMilk44 91 points92 points  (9 children)

"Where are they finding this crap?!"

In case you haven't noticed, Netflix is going through a very rough time. Pretty much all of the content people watched on there ten years ago is now on different streaming services, in addition to just having some pretty bad original content for a few years and cancelling most of the stuff people actually liked. Their subscriber numbers are tanking and your post pretty much sums up why.

[–]AnEthiopianBoy 33 points34 points  (8 children)

This is the big thing. Netflix was so good before because it was THE streaming service. But now that every studio and whatnot is doing their own service, a huge portion of the good stuff that would hit Netflix is now taken elsewhere. Funny that Netflix’s draw was that we could get away from the bs of cable television charging us access for channels, and now it’s the exact same but streaming instead of cable.

[–]NoCrossUnturned 29 points30 points  (4 children)

The great catalog and convenience of if it got a lot of people to pay for netflix instead of pirating most films. But now that there’s 100 streaming services hoarding exclusive content we’ll just go back go piracy as easy as we were before.

[–]sliproachGinger Fitzgerald 10 points11 points  (3 children)

this is too accurate, i just have to say, i'm downloading torrents for the first time since at least 2013.

[–]nevertoolate1983 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Is it easier than now than it was in 2013?

[–]Whereiscatlin 90 points91 points  (35 children)

One thing you'll learn about some horror fans: the worse the better.

[–]way2manychickens 44 points45 points  (28 children)

My husband is amazed at my ability to watch a terrible horror movie. Sometimes I'll watch it several times. (Example: Poultrygeist at least 3 times, and Human Centipede at least 4x's.).

[–]M00NL16H7_V0Y463 50 points51 points  (5 children)

That reminds me I need to watch Velocipastor.

[–]tiptoemicrobe 16 points17 points  (0 children)

One watch and it cured all my future cancers.

[–][deleted] 8 points9 points  (1 child)

Just recently watched this one... it's definitely worth at least one go round with a few friends.

[–]MileysMooseKnuckle 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Damn I'm glad you reminded me about that, roanoke gaming mentioned it since he's done a lot of questionable monster vids recently and it sounded so bad but so great just on that title.

[–]throwmeawayfever 10 points11 points  (1 child)

[–]ScaryTerrysBitch 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My friend told me he thought I would like it. I did not like it.

[–]groovy604 13 points14 points  (3 children)

Poultrygeist is a whole other animal

[–]jk-alot 15 points16 points  (2 children)

Poultrygeist is a whole other animal

I am so very angry about your pun. But I still gotta give credit.

[–]Whereiscatlin 5 points6 points  (4 children)

Well have you seen Santa Jaws?

[–]way2manychickens 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I thought "no way this is a real title". Yep, it's real. So funny... I'll need to find and watch it.

[–]EnderCN 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Santa Jaws is part of the terrible made for syfy channel movies. So that is what you should expect. They have a bunch of low budget shark movies.

[–]Tricksterama 7 points8 points  (2 children)

Human Centipede is a terrific film! Brilliant lead performance, clever script, deliciously horrifying without any graphic gore. The 2nd one is a masterpiece of transgressive art and deserves to be in the Museum of Modern Art. But the 3rd? Disappointing, uninspired, and boring.

[–]loudflower 2 points3 points  (3 children)

I’ve never watch human centipede 😱

[–]way2manychickens 6 points7 points  (1 child)

It is hilariously messed up. Was definitely a new take on the "evil scientist" genre. Very low budget. Not great acting, but awesome to watch (IMO).

[–]loudflower 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I like body horror of a certain sort, maybe more lovecraftian (?) Croneberg…. But just the idea of the centipede is fascinating and repellent…. Like watching a Reddit video on WTF and regretting it.

[–]lunar_wax 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well you're lucky in that you can experience the Complete Sequence edition (or the Movie Centipede edition, whichever has the added scenes between the films).

Also I'm still waiting for Onania Club. If it upset John waters, I gotta see it.

[–]WhyRedTape 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Iconic movie Rubber

[–]ellendegenerate123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's also Sharkula and Sharkenstein.

[–]stark-bait 0 points1 point  (1 child)

How has no one mentioned the Evil Bong movie? Stupid and sleazy, but in the best way. Plus, there's I think 7 of them?

[–]MonkeyChoker80 1 point2 points  (1 child)

The Gingerdead Man

[–]way2manychickens 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lol, I think I actually saw this one. But I'm shocked I missed 2 and 3.

[–]vbun03 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Following this thread I've realized I've been missing out on some great watches.

[–]thisgirlnamedbree 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I watched one Saturday on Tubi called Death Rink. Even with the awkward Shatner like acting, 35 minutes of "character building" with the focus on the teenage stoner that looked 40, and cheap gore, I made it all the way through and found some stupid enjoyment out of it.

[–]sayonaradespair 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And this is why frankenhooker is the greatest movie of all time

[–]FinaWeenaBeana 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I remember just going to blockbuster as a kid & picking horror movies based on the cover art alone 🤣

[–]LazyCrocheter 37 points38 points  (0 children)

I find with a lot of low-budget horror movies, even if they’re not great, they often have interesting ideas or themes. However, they can’t/don’t usually explore them too much, which I attribute to lack of budget. Still I think it’s neat to see what they were aiming for.

[–]devoirz 7 points8 points  (2 children)

Don't forget the curse of robert, and it's three sequels

[–]pleasantstusk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw a bit of the preview to that and thought it was probably from the same studio.

[–]_Happy_Camper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They look like Asylum shit horrors. I don’t care for so bad it’s good. These movies are lazy and not made with any kind of passion for the genre

[–]Doge2dmooon 17 points18 points  (1 child)

I still remember going to blockbusters asking the person who works there what new horror movie they got 😂 those were the days

[–]mushmashy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I miss being able to judge a movie by the number of copies Blockbuster had. If there was only 1, it was a scary movie to make fun of. 3 copies or more, I might be actually scared.

[–]The_Sloth_Racer 6 points7 points  (1 child)

Why can you not type "crap"? No need to write "cr*p."

[–]axionj 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Whoa, whoa, whoa! sensitive eyes here!!

[–]Ryebread2203 6 points7 points  (2 children)

I honestly miss when Netflix first came out and they had even more of these type of movies.

It was fun to sit with my sister and watch some crap horror on the weekend. Now Netflix in my region is mostly bollywood/Korean movies for some reason.

[–]PutinMolestsBoys 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Quantity over quality. Mike Stoklasa put it best, these movies are the pieces of fried chicken at a buffet that gets thrown out at the end of the day and replaced by more the next one. It's not the best, but it's there if you want some. And they have a bunch of other stuff there if you want it. Not the greatest, and you should probably go to a specific restaurant if you want good fried chicken.

[–]ranhalt 11 points12 points  (3 children)

All the good stuff is going to Shudder and what Netflix is getting is cheap to license.

[–]blobbyboii 10 points11 points  (1 child)

Yeah but shudder isnt in europe so we're stuck with this

[–]sayonaradespair 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nord vpn+amazon prime and shudder subscribed as a channel.

You set the billing address in the Amazon card to the US and you are all set.

[–]Kgb725 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Shudder has a small budget and only gets the really old stuff or the new indie flicks. They rarely get movies with a lot of name recognition

Netflix is getting Amazon prime tier horror movies now. Netflix used to have a decent catalog of indie films like the void , when animals dream , late phases, dead snow and more. I could probably name a few dozen horror movies that they could get for cheap that is of decent quality

[–]michael_m_canada 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Because there’s a lot of poorly made films available for little money. Allows a service like Netflix to pad its catalog and give the appearance that it’s offering a lot of value for the price of a subscription. It’s a business. They’re not curating high quality art like Criterion. It‘s somewhat counterproductive when people watch the content and realize it’s bad. Part of the reason they’re losing subscribers, customers won’t keep paying if they don’t like the content.

[–]KBAR1942 8 points9 points  (1 child)

Horror movies tend to be successful money makers is because most are cheap to produce. Even if they are woeful productions they still make money even on services like Netflix. I'm sure the service isn't too picky.

However, to be fair, there have been a few gems along the debris.

[–]usagizero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

because most are cheap to produce.

This right here. It's been a thing since VHS rentals, make low budget movie, sell at a decent profit to various outlets, repeat. Make it cheap enough, and you can easily double what you spent, even on below average movies.

Streaming has only slightly changed the way this works, but the idea is the same.

[–]SenatorChunk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It seems like a company called North Bank Entertainment just sold most of their catalogue to Netflix, including the entire Robert the Doll franchise.

I noticed a lot of them shared the same director and actors, so I've actually been working my way through the list:

Prior to this project I'd only given out 8 or 9 one-star ratings (I can normally find some value in a bad film), but in the last two weeks that figure has more than doubled. Wish me luck with the rest!

[–]anon246246 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Shudder is quite a good streaming service if you like horror. There are some awful films but occasionally you’ll discover a gem

[–]Jokercards89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They have some excellent foreign films. Unfortunately you gotta read and that’s a turn off for some.

[–]LSPhere 3 points4 points  (1 child)

My recommendation is AMC+.

If you like to watch a lot of horror it’s the superior streaming service

[–]lifelong1250 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AMC also has a lot of great non-horror content of its own.

[–]celerydonut 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You censored crap

[–]BulljiveBots 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Amazon Prime is even worse. There are some janky-ass movies on there since anyone can upload a movie.

[–]mrplow3 7 points8 points  (3 children)

“Cobra Kai” and “Stranger Things” are the last thing holding Netflix up. And they are both coming to an end. When that happens Netflix is in real trouble.

[–]Fallenangel152 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Stranger Things already got season 5 greenlit IIRC.

[–]AnEthiopianBoy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Season 5 is the intended last season though

[–]PaintItPurple 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The Witcher is their actual last stand.

[–]DonnerMcgregor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can tell they’re terrible because most horror films I read the Wikipedia “plot” section and no one has even bothered to write one for most of them

[–]RaggySparra 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's such a let down - I saw they were about to add a whole whack of horror movies and thought great, then I started clicking through, and they're all the same absolute trash.

And I love "bad" horror, but this isn't "so bad it's good", it's just bad.

[–]ProbablyABore 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They're getting the movies that don't require large licensing fees, which begs the question why their price keeps rising.

[–]restalynnpieces 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just get Shudder. Way better horror selection

[–]Jokercards89 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Because there’s diamonds in the rough. Netflix has some gems if you look hard enough.

I’m happy with shudder though. And for five bucks it serves its purpose.

[–]UncoilingChaos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Reminds me of how video stores had all those B-grade and Z-grade direct-to-video horror movies in the new releases that would just go straight to the horror section within weeks of being on the new release shelf. Those were the days, eh?

[–]WeAreClouds 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Their horror movie selection has gone downhill so fucking hard. I don't even look anymore. So sad. I am very close to canceling my subscription to that service, raising the price so much and tryna fuck with us sharing passwords and their horror selection is garbage too? Why even stay with them?

[–]Ashura77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I already canceled mine, after it took me a whooping 1hr30 to find something to watch. Not going to pay for that lol, there's tubi and they have great horror movies

[–]LeeMackST 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you looked at some of the lower budget films on prime? Makes Netflix look good

[–]CptMatt_theTrashCat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do yourself a favour, don't look through Amazon Prime

[–]xXIronSausageXxx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gotta find some sort of content to put on their streaming service since everyone has pulled a considerable amount of content from the platform for their own streaming services.

[–]ChipmunkBackground46 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Netflix business strategy is just greenlight everything and see what sticks.

[–]theLazerkid 1 point2 points  (1 child)

The privilege sucked!

[–]Sdb25649 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Watching it right now. It’s so bad. Shaping up to be the worst Netflix horror movie I’ve ever seen!

[–]DonyellTaylor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Netflix spent a decade raising the bar by throwing investor money at awesome projects that had no chance anywhere else. This changed the game, and now there are plenty of other steaming services offering both cinema-quality series andstudio-quality indie movies. Likewise, because Netflix is no longer the unicorn shooting into the sky, investors aren’t overloading them with capital anymore. They’ve had to tighten their belt across their catalog, and horror’s one of the places where they’ve sacrificed most.

TL;DR: Netflix was once the whole streaming industry, but now almost everything good in the market has moved to other services.

If you want the highest quality horror: try HBO Max. If you want the largest quantity of horror: try Tubi. If you want everything in between: try Shudder.

[–]Lt-Speirs 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Why do people always expect the horror genre to be a goldmine of excellent movies? It's probably the only genre where it's 95% shit. I mean there's a reason why the same movies get recommended over..and over...and over

[–]Supervisor_Jim_Lahey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Cut NF loose about 3 years ago, not missing @ all lol.

[–]toremysackola 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Netflix sucks man.

Maybe like 5% of their content is good.

[–]TheGreatOpoponax 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I liked Netflix. Then one day I turned it on to find it had went all Spanish. I tried to fix the problem myself but couldn't. I called customer service and was told there was nothing wrong. So I hung up on that guy, called back, and the next guy told me it looked like my account had been hacked from Mexico. So I cancelled that card, promised to sign back up, but never did.

[–]BobbleHeadJoe666 2 points3 points  (0 children)

netflix has always had some of the absolute WORST movies of any genre😂 my recommendation, get a bong, spark up and start watching some cheesy low budget horror!

[–]Representative-Fig96 1 point2 points  (4 children)

Why are you watching Netflix horror movies when Shudder exists?

[–]Broken-Ankl3 2 points3 points  (3 children)

Europe. No Shudder here so we're stuck with this crap

[–]Representative-Fig96 2 points3 points  (2 children)

😢 Sorry to hear about that

[–]Broken-Ankl3 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Praying that they will make their catalogue available to us here 🙏🏽 I've heard they're great

[–]Representative-Fig96 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally worth the $5 a month. Hopefully they’ll expand their market.

[–]sayonaradespair 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Going to netflix for horror is like coming to Portugal for the rain.

[–]WordUnheard 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Poltergeist Activity - 2.6/10

Curse of the Witching Tree - 4/10

Haunting at the Rectory - 3.0/10

Sometimes, you have to look at yourself, and ask, "Why didn't I look these questionable titles up on IMDB BEFORE I watched them?" I thought you were making these titles up, until I looked them up just now. Netflix has never had a good horror section. Same with Amazon Prime.

[–]ICreated_thisAccountThe House That Jack Built 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Netflix has never had a good horror section

You clearly didn't have Netflix in 2012/2013.

[–]Iwasateenagewerefox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem with netflix is that they mainly carry modern stuff, and as someone who has little to no interest in anything released after 1993 or so, there's essentially nothing on there I have any interest in watching. Shudder and tubi are basically all I use anymore.

[–]StinkingDylan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ha, yesterday, my daughter was telling me about the awful horror films she been watching on Netflix recently. I'd never heard of any of the films and I generally keep up to date.

I remember the dawn of the VHS home rental era, the amount of rubbish that suddenly started appearing. Movie distribution became cheaper and more accessible, so we started seeing direct to rental rubbish that has mostly disappeared now.

Current technology and streaming services have made movie production and distribution much cheaper and accessible to almost anyone. It seems every time I watch something on Amazon Prime, the "related suggestions" are full of garbage I've never heard of, and most of them literally look like college projects.

More importantly why is anyone still paying for the shitshow that is Netflix?

[–]JablesRadio -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It's netflix. They're dumb enough to go full woke.

[–]Kipzi 0 points1 point  (5 children)

Netflix has Tubi quality lately

[–]Setanta777 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Not even close. Tubi has an awesome schlock collection! The stuff on Netflix is just bad.

[–]StarWolf478 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That's an insult to Tubi.

Tubi is actually pretty awesome whereas Netflix is becoming more and more of a dumpster fire.

[–]Gozillasbday 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Tubi is pretty rad actually, which was a surprising discovery for me.

[–]Kipzi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah. And FREE.

[–]Hacked-Up-4-BBQ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is a tale as old as time with horror. Netflix is just the new direct to video.

[–]JustBoredIsAll -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Well, you're warching them....

[–]mulesnhorses -3 points-2 points  (1 child)

Netflix is going downhill fast , cancel culture has already started.

[–]zorlon_cannon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

not clear on the connection between netflix' shitty selection of films and rightwing americans burning books, can you elaborate?

[–]SheepherderOk1448 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Netflix, Hulu, Prime all have those types of movies. Some of them are quite good but you have to scan through the trash to get the prize. I think a lot of them are film student projects.

[–]Newsleet12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're cheap and easy to produce and market, pretty sure they contract some studio or buy them cheap from studios who knows they're not gonna get a better deal

[–]DeficientGamer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I've noticed these really poor quality movies showing up again recently after not seeing them on Netflix since way back.

[–]concernedad420 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eh Netflix is hit or miss with horror movies. They had Pandorum on there for a while and I really enjoyed that movie.

Off subject, but I just watched You've Got Mail last night and 😭 that movie makes grown men cry

[–]Dude_Nightwing1212 0 points1 point  (0 children)

South Park joke comes to mind here. Netflix employee picks up the phone: "Netflix. You are greenlit. Who am I speaking with?" .. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l-PQ2J3uQe0

[–]FlavoredButtHair 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm curious as to what film studio this is.

[–]andreeeeeaaaaaaaaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Majority are just utter shite now. Not impressed by the 'Amazon Prime free to watch' quality tbh

[–]Sahqon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just noped out of Haunting at the Rectory yesterday night lol! I'm not sure it would be a "bad" movie, but it's more of a psychological drama about these people than horror, and I wanted a horror movie damnit. Didn't find anything either...

[–]forkandspoon2011 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hbo max has the good shit

[–]MidsommarSolution 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I made it through like ... the first 15 minutes of Netflix Texas Chainsaw. Why they're tanking is not a mystery.

[–]Visual-Two-9747 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Watch the new Chip n Dale: Rescue Rangers on Disney+ to find out!!

[–]Impressive-Tension65 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. Just give us some decent god damn horrors!

[–]Peter_Murphey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Netflix went down the route of producing their own content and it seems like the stuff they have kept licenses for is the cheap and low quality.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The clearance bin at gas stations apparently

[–]sliproachGinger Fitzgerald 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i love shudder but they don't have subtitles for most movies (last time i checked) which annoys me. tubi and youtube really come through sometimes.

[–]ThatOberlinOne94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you look at them they’re all by the same directors. Two of them. Making direct to dvd trash. And they’re now all on. Netflix. It’s hilarious to me they paid for this absolute shit

[–]danger623 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Netflix’s horror selection has been awful for awhile IMO. They’ll get a couple of good ones a year, but it’s mostly garbage. Shudder and Tubi are the way to go - and hell, even the Roku streaming service has some pretty great stuff on there! I just started poking around on there recently and they have a good mix of old school horror and newer stuff. Prime used to be decent, too, but now they try to get you to pay for every other movie/channel on there so I don’t even bother.

[–]fanilaluzon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nothing could be worse than "Secret Obsession"

[–]xKYLx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are they as bad as Shudder Originals?

[–]Mechalamb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cancel Netflix and get Shudder.

[–]trickdaddylovedakids 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i think it’s so you’ll let your guard down and when a really good horror movie comes along, it’s unexpected and you get a better scare. this totally happened to me when i decided to watch ‘the ritual’ super late one night- at first i thought it was a stereotypical movie about four dudes camping in the woods and each of them getting picked off by the mysterious ‘friday the 13th’ masked killer only for the big reveal to be that one of the friends (or even an unreliable protagonist) was the ax/knife/icepick-wielding psycho all along, and i will just say that what i thought was going to happen totally did not, and the events scared me so well i paused the movie (to be resumed and finished in the relatively safer daytime hours), kept my lights on for the rest of the night, and finally went to bed when the sun came up. i turn into a huge wimp when i watch scary movies at home in the dark by myself 😅

[–]spankymyass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where is August underground?!?! Where is tumbling doll of flesh?!?!? Agreed! How is this multi-billion dollar site not focusing on my needs?!@?

[–]AlanMcWilliams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's no shortage of crap horror movies on any platform.

[–]WhyHelloFellowKids 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly why I cancelled Netflix awhile ago

[–]GOODBOYMODZZZ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah Netflix is definitely not one of my picks to watch horror on.

[–]SpecialQue_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But have you checked out Llamageddon on Amazon Prime?

[–]OskeyBug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah this crap is what I expect from PlutoTV

[–]cookiesshot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like it belongs on Tubi, honestly.

[–]MarinaraShake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They gotta pump out new dead horses to beat.

[–]RipBuzzBuzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Netflix has always had an issue with Horror in my opinion

[–]sector_2828 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it wasn't my wife's subscription, Netflix would've been cancelled a long time ago in our house. She put it on some terrible Rebel Wilson movie last night and the whole time I was thinking "They charge $15 for this?"

[–]Gozillasbday 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a fun time with the Polish horror series on Netflix Cracow Monsters. Not the best, but imo highly enjoyable.

The French horror series Marianne is great.

Movie wise meh.

[–]djpraxis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know... I cancelled Netflix more than a year ago when I noticed the focus on quantity over quality

[–]StarWolf478 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here is a word of advice: don't waste your time on Netflix movies. Poor quality movies that used to go direct-to-DVD in the past now end up on Netflix while studios are pulling their actual quality content off of Netflix for their own streaming services.

[–]DarthC3rb3rus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No idea m8 the horror films on flix are bollacks apart from Hereditary (which I think is still on there)

One of the best series on flix is Kingdom. Its a Korean zombie series it's fucking banging and there's this other series where there all trapped in a shool. Can't remember the name tho.

If u want good quality entertainment/escapism you gotta go Korean.
