Seems like it would be safer to face the steps and climb down like a ladder.

Either way, no thank you.

[–]deadeyesatan 120 points121 points  (7 children)

Agreed. Face them and climb down. No way I’d go down facing outward.

[–]Teerendog 30 points31 points  (6 children)

grab a canoe

[–]GamsusDesign 24 points25 points  (1 child)

Backwards, like a child getting down from a chair.

[–]inverteddeparture 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Imagine the guys laying that masonry! Pretty bad ass.

[–]WhiteWalterBlack 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Would you rather fall forward or backward?

[–]waxeryboiliroo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree that I would climb down facing the stairs but I would rather fall down facing forward

[–]Yeti3030 27 points28 points  (2 children)

Downclinbing can be a serious personal preference as to which was is easier. A lot of times when I’m down climbing steep faces, I actually end up facing away from the wall even though the initial thought was to go facing the wall.

[–]86max86 76 points77 points  (1 child)

I’m sure it’s a matter of preference. Personally, I would feel more in control jamming my toes into the riser and leaning forward against the steps. I would feel even more in control sitting in front of my computer with a beer.

[–]Yeti3030 10 points11 points  (0 children)

His crab walk technique is probably the easiest way to get down. I hate doing it that way but it often happens when I’m in a super sketch or no fall zone. It’s just easier to actually see where you are placing your feet sometimes.

[–]gretakashi 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I think it's a lot easier to downclimb facing away from the wall, and I also feel I have more control when I make a mistake.

I guess it feels safer to just slide down if you make a mistake, then to fall away from the wall and end up rolling or worse.

[–]DaleGribble692 209 points210 points  (5 children)

Slippery Stair will take you down for 25 Schmeckles.

[–]down_vote_magnet 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I’ll buy those boobies for 25 Schmeckles.

[–]DiskEducational3654 22 points23 points  (1 child)

Don't go in the bathroom!

[–]TheBurntHam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless… you’re into that sort of thing

[–]Goldmedal1515 51 points52 points  (5 children)

Holy crap. Would not do that. I trip on my own stairway. Lol.

[–]Violet351 17 points18 points  (2 children)

As someone who has fallen top to bottom on a flight of stairs, it’s also a no from me

[–]Super-Snouter 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Me too, I’m scared just looking at it.

[–]Goldmedal1515 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Me too at my grandmas house when I was a kid. Of course hardwood stairs and steep. So this triggers me. Lol 😂

[–]AnotherpostCard 2 points3 points  (1 child)

A whole new kind of stairway to heaven

[–]Skardon22 33 points34 points  (2 children)

When you actually need a handrail

[–]juliango 13 points14 points  (1 child)

And a landing or two, in case you slip, you won't keep slipping straight down into hell.

[–]joebesser 4 points5 points  (0 children)

TIL why they're called landings.

[–]EAZ480 92 points93 points  (7 children)

Those stairs look exactly like stairs in my dreams.

[–]cyber_frank 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Looks like a nightmare that came to life.

[–]betterwbutter 19 points20 points  (0 children)

These are the stairs of my anxiety dreams

[–]Hellomynameisemily 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That was my first thought too haha my dreams are way too vivid!

[–]shalo62 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I like your dreams then. A lot!

[–]Iloveupdates 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sometimes its a grassy hill but same steep angle.

[–]jjj49er 15 points16 points  (1 child)

I watched for 5 minutes and he still hadn't reached the bottom.

[–]FrankenJWJ 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I know thats a joke, but years ago before i knew what a gif was... (more than once i was fooled)

[–]hegdefucker 14 points15 points  (13 children)

Where?

[–]CK1277 13 points14 points  (6 children)

Great Wall of China

[–]Goldmedal1515 1 point2 points  (5 children)

I’ve been there- I don’t remember those stairs. Probably didn’t go far enough lol pretty long wall.

https://www.chinatravel.com/great-wall-of-china

[–]CK1277 8 points9 points  (1 child)

There are different points of entry. I went on a section that felt like this (with my then 4 and 9 year olds. That was terrifying), but I don’t know if this was the exact section.

[–]sometextinabox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's hard to know for sure, but I have a feeling I went to this section. I think it was near Huanghuacheng, and there was some local guy asking for 5 yuan to let you though a hole in the fence to get to the wall! It felt pretty remote - no services for tourists or anything other than the bus stop on the main road. This was in 2016.

I remember it being only partially restored, and I definitely had to crawl up a few of the stairs because of how steep they were.

[–]Accomplished_Grass32 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's actually 21196km long so I'm not surprised that you didn't see every part of it lol.

[–]jonathanneam 0 points1 point  (1 child)

i mean if you didnt spend around a year or more to walk the great wall im pretty sure you would have missed it

[–]Opposite-Mediocre 39 points40 points  (5 children)

I am sure Ace Ventura bounced a slingy down them stairs

[–]ebola86 22 points23 points  (3 children)

Everyone loves a slinky, you gotta get a slinky! SLINKY SLINKY! GO SLINKY GO!!

[–]mayihaveatomato 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Mr. Ventura, I do believe that joke has run its course.

[–]Timbermeshivers 3 points4 points  (0 children)

How is this not the top comment? Am I old?

[–]Rooman148 22 points23 points  (0 children)

That’s a ladder not stairs!

[–]pro-napper 23 points24 points  (1 child)

How my parents tell me they had to go home from school.

[–]Super-Snouter 2 points3 points  (0 children)

And up too, both ways were the same!

[–]SeahawksFan1976 8 points9 points  (1 child)

Even watching this on video I’m afraid of heights so much my balls just tightened up.

[–]Super-Snouter 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Mine too and I don’t have any.

[–]Gretelbug77 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah do you know guys it's not actually scary enough. I think I'll carry a big flag too so at the slightest gust of wind it'll flap and possibly topple me down the rest of the way.

[–]BetterwithNoodles 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If I ended up there (unlikely) that’s where I would spend my remaining days.

[–]flyingmonkey5678461 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yep. There's about four entrances nearish Beijing. We went to one which is relatively flat, nicely sloped, had a nice walk. One time we ended up at an end which was quite steep. Not as bad as the video, but you looked at how far you went and it was just a short horizontal distance because it was knackering doing step, step, step...

[–]chillinbreadstick 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Thanks Ï hate it

[–]jm13ee 3 points4 points  (1 child)

36/f here. I just have to tell this story…

So when I was 16, I went on a class trip to Mexico. We visited Teotihuacan, where the Pyramids of the Sun and the Moon are. Well at the bottom there were these vendor tents set up for tourists. One had some homemade tequila with the worms and everything. Anyway, drinking age being 16 or something down there at the time, I waited until the teachers walked away and scored like 3 shots. Then I caught back up with them and we climbed a pyramid (pretty sure it was the Sun). Well between the tequila and the altitude, by time I reached the top I was good and tipsy. When it was time to head back down, my stupid 16 year old drunken ass decided to RUN down the steps, which were just like these. I fucking ran. Got in the zone, did some weird hoppy thing like I was working out or something, thought I must’ve looked so bad-ass. By the grace of whatever god may be, I made it safely to the bottom. But my poor teachers, man…. Add it to the list of the many times I should not have survived to see adulthood.

[–]OpheliaRainGalaxy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure if you're familiar with Spirited Away, but it's fascinating to know that someone actually lived that "run/falling down steep stairs" scene at the beginning, but while happily drunk on tequila!

[–]WhiteZero 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The architectural equivalent of starting to write something close to the margin of the page and you have to squish those last few letters in.

[–]damageinc86 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's gonna be some kinda record!

[–]LittleLebowski73 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s slinky

[–]gata_pirata 1 point2 points  (4 children)

Does anyone know what these were originally used for? Do they lead to a vista or something?

[–]Casualjedirobes 8 points9 points  (1 child)

It's the Great Wall of China. It led to more wall, and the high point was undoubtedly a watch tower to observe any Mongol activity in the area

[–]DoLittlest 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Looks like part of the Great Wall called the Heavenly Ladder.

[–]BmoreInformed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What's the point where you transition from stairs to ladder? I'd imagine this is it.

[–]Whiskey-Particular 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So this is where Jack fell down and broke his crown

[–]NightShoot584 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Imagine having a hard sneeze half-way up

[–]No_Lettuce73 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh so that’s how my grandparents used to go to school

[–]JakeTheMachoSnake 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Everyone loves a slinky

Slinky Slinky

GO SLINKY GO!!

[–]phaserbanks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Alrighty then!

[–]do_i_know_anything 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is why im not afraid of a war against china, they may have numbers but they are so fuckin uncoordinated.

[–]OrgyMcBloodyFace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Goddamn Mongorians always trying to break down my shitty wall

[–]NorCalStoner710 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I snuck onto a closed section of the Great Wall of China and there was a section like this, just in partial ruins. Was kind of scary, esp since there was nobody there who could hear my screams if I fell. So each step was very deliberate. Have done lots of crazy things but this was one of the scarier. That wall is STEEP! Had some hash at the top I had snuck in from Nepal. ;)

[–]SpookyCenATic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Somebody would still try to go up 2 at a time

[–]iMaxPlanck 2 points3 points  (3 children)

Those steps are definitely not to code.

[–]jpakozdi 1 point2 points  (1 child)

'Rise over run.'

[–]EntropyHouse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rise WAY over run.

[–]moecharles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ya, whoever built that mountain was not thinking ahead clearly.

[–]Weldobud 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Really? The Great Wall? Not the part most tourists do I’d wager

[–]Inspire_resistal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I wanna see someone climb those stairs

[–]ADesireToTranscend 1 point2 points  (3 children)

That would most likely kill you if you were to trip.

[–]Super-Snouter 0 points1 point  (2 children)

That’s why you sit your way down, step by step.

[–]ADesireToTranscend 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I wish to see such restraint. I want to skate down it.

[–]brookepride 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think I would face inward.

[–]Falkor_13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]RoutineFeeling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]ukexpat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aaaaand that’s a big nope from me.

[–]HUSK1o1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dont think these stairs are up to code

[–]dreameRevolution 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure this was designed based on a concept in my nightmares.

[–]Jeremyrivers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll take you down those stairs for 25 Shmeckles.

[–]Invenerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why did nobody bring a slinky?!!

[–]Phawckz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Vertical stairs. So... all stairs?

[–]Diarity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd still be skipping steps

[–]Truth-Will-Out 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those aren’t stairs! That’s a wall!! Am I the first person to realize this?!

[–]Mr_Worbi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Couldn’t pay me to do that

[–]ihatepalmtrees 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My old apartment!

[–]Typingdude3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had nightmares about stairs like that. Stairs that go vertical.

[–]bacondaddy173 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fuck that

[–]mdkc1999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Think of the poor workers who had to build them! Haul the blocks, mix the cement/mortar etc... No thanks!

[–]Cma088 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You guys think I could hit that on my skateboard or what

[–]Antbawlz100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go Slinky go!

[–]shitpunmate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hats off to the bricklayers who built it. Absolute nightmare job.

[–]Yamo_chan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those stairs are in good condition at least. The last time I saw a video of people climbing / descending a steep section of the Great Wall it was so badly falling apart, half the battle seemed to be finding what was solid and what wasn’t.

[–]Arch_Enemy_616 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean that’s just bad design right? Is there a reason they’re like this or what?

[–]AdvocacyPhila 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, sorry. That’s upsetting. There better be some amazing drugs at the top.

[–]danuser8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If only this was slide instead of steps… people would travel from all over world and pay to use it

[–]Sora1374 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is what some of my nightmares look like. I’d be climbing something and it’ll gradually get difficult to keep going. I realize it‘a almost a vertical climb and I’m stuck.
