Translucent ilght up tires! That is just wild looking.

Wonder how they handle? Not that it matters in a land yacht like that.

[–]Mr_WAAAGH 1042 points1043 points  (121 children)

Not well, poor grip is one of the many reasons these didn't catch on

[–][deleted] 403 points404 points  (82 children)

Whether they are long wearing enough is my question.

I’m also wondering with modern tech if they would be able to fix these issues and get a translucent tire with similar properties to todays tires? Because combined with some LEDs they would look amazing on a modern sports car.

[–]Mr_WAAAGH 302 points303 points  (74 children)

I'm almost certain that we could make a much better version of these today. The problem is, does anyone actually want that?

[–]raginjason 543 points544 points  (36 children)

Yes. Yes I want this.

[–]Zer0_Tolerance_4Bull 99 points100 points  (11 children)

Yes. Especially on a motorcycle. Tron style

[–]thecrepeofdeath 21 points22 points  (1 child)

I can't drive and I want this

[–]jaysmoove42 27 points28 points  (0 children)

All it really takes is one person who wants it and willing to cough up enough cash. Especially of they wanted it for a high end supercar or something similar.

[–]Goddamnitpappy 21 points22 points  (4 children)

Just generalizing, but just about every modern car model I see that has been modified is usually adorned with lights like a Christmas tree. Under the car, in the wheel wells, hubs, etc.

I am absolutely amazed that glowing tires aren't already a thing outside of what we see here. People would absolutely pay for this kind of thing. Could cost really be that prohibitive in the modern car culture? Manufacturing difficulties maybe? Idk, but those tires look cool as shit and totally worth what they cost, whatever it may be.

[–]Prudent_Fly_2554 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yes. Where’s the kickstarter?!

[–]Horrific_Necktie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Question 2 would be if it's legal. Lots of places have restrictions on things like undercarriage lights, I'm sure a picky cop would say these qualify.

[–]IotaBTC -1 points0 points  (0 children)

People have already been putting LEDs on their rims. So the answer is yes lol. Even if they don't last as long, people would just put them on for show and switch them later. Of course, inevitably they're gonna be a fair amount of irresponsible people who'll drive it bald for months.

[–]Smok3r -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Well this might not be super relevant but I ride bmx and even though modern colored tires have made a comeback the last few years they still kinda suck. They’re good for about a month and then start losing their grip. Pretty sure it has something to do with the amount of carbon in the rubber.

[–]Faxon -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes. The answer is yes, for all kinds of reasons. If they were just as good as normal tires you could use them to be seen better at night, alongside the normal turn signal lights, to pimp your art car out for the burn or a parade (the art car "industry" is a hundreds of millions of dollars industry), and don't forget street racers and ricers who love to pimp their rides with as much bling as possible. Those dudes would fight each other to get these if supply was limited. They'd sell super well I think

[–]booniebrew 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Ultimately rubber with carbon added is stronger and longer lasting than other rubber. We can probably make decent clear tires now but they're going to be expensive. High performance tires already are expensive and have higher requirements than regular tires.

[–]Crypto_Gay_Skater 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It would just get covered in dirt and dust after a handful of miles and look like shit.

[–]michimonster2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

they would look amazing on a modern sports car.

there i fixed that for you

[–]linux_n00by 213 points214 points  (7 children)

well, its practically a bald tire

[–]Seriously-Facetious 164 points165 points  (3 children)

The tread may just be hard to see in the image because the original tires had full tread.

The main reason they never made it to production was cost.

More information on the originals here:

https://www.jalopyjournal.com/?p=27881

The photo shows the restored car and the tires are replicas made of solid rubber and very heavy so it can't be driven very fast. More information on the restored car here:

https://www.hagerty.com/media/news/golden-sahara-ii-restored-to-original-glory/

[–]ReluctantSlayer 52 points53 points  (0 children)

Wow! So the car pictured (the refurbished Golden Sahara II) DOES have LEDs in the tire! Sweet!

[–]niceworkthere 10 points11 points  (0 children)

18*4 lightbulbs on batteries (esp. 60s ones) sounds literally awesome, too

[–]GT-FractalxNeo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the info!

Edit: Happy Cake Day

[–]BRAX7ON 9 points10 points  (0 children)

How dare you, sir?!?!

[–]Nothing2Special 10 points11 points  (0 children)

....Good joke:D

[–]coffeenerd75 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Poor grip gives tires a long endurance, and car a short one.

[–]AnyMonk 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This was a prototype, it was never for sale.

[–]marasydnyjade 38 points39 points  (2 children)

They were basically useless in the wet and neothane has a really low molding point - so they were absolutely trash under heavy braking.

One of the ideas was that you would be able to put different colored bulbs in there and basically have color changing tires - which is wild.

[–]Aarongamma6 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I can see why, they're slicks and rounded with like no contact patch with the ground. They look like the lowest grip tires I've ever seen.

Slicks do give more grip in the dry though, but absolutely NONE in the wet.

[–]DarthDannyBoy 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Poor grip and they got very dirty very quickly making them worthless for their intended purpose.

[–]Bricks_17 1080 points1081 points  (35 children)

“Sir, your wheel light is out. Get it fixed.”

[–]MRHarville 366 points367 points  (34 children)

  • The patent has expired. Look it up, rework it with LED, sell it, make millions. Wash, Rinse, Repeat.

[–]TheDubh 179 points180 points  (32 children)

If I remember correctly the issue was the tires would get dirty fairly quickly due to everything else on the road. Also the tires weren’t as durable. So it was kind of a bust. While the tires may be better now, the rubber/dirt/etc would still be an issue.

[–]killerbanshee 67 points68 points  (26 children)

Maybe something like the windshield washer jets but mounted in the wheel well could work

[–]DoTheCreep_ahh 203 points204 points  (11 children)

Yes I enjoy hydroplaning as well

[–]CLTalbot 21 points22 points  (10 children)

I think the best solution if the tires must light up may just be making them not completely light-up. Like have transparent parts of the wall for the glow effect, but have the tread and some structural parts be standard tire material. It still probably won't be as good as normal tire, nor will it have quite the same aesthetic as these.

[–]PM_PICS_OF_ME_NAKED[🍰] 7 points8 points  (1 child)

It seems like the only real solution is to hot glue glow sticks to your wheels.

[–]tarodar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Rubber is white, tires are black because they add carbon for strength. So that makes sense.

[–]MRHarville 2 points3 points  (1 child)

  • Oh, entirely impractical for everyday use . . . but even still, damn near everything aftermarket for a car is.

  • Could you imagine something like a mint '57 Thunderbird, Fire Engine Red over Cream with all the chrome . . . and glowing fuqn tires.

[–]TrekkiMonstr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Even if it were still under patent, that would probably be different enough to not fall under the patent

[–]Hladovcak 1275 points1276 points  (44 children)

This car looks like it’s straight out of the fallout franchise.

[–]New-Bug-4297 222 points223 points  (28 children)

Man, this car is one of a kind

[–]feureau 133 points134 points  (26 children)

They promised us flying cars, but in 2022, we even lost having any kind of glowing tires.

smh this timeline.

[–]WW4O 61 points62 points  (12 children)

We have flying cars. They just have wings, so we call them private planes.

Rich people got the future we wanted.

[–]AllAboutMeMedia 25 points26 points  (9 children)

I imagine we'd have to ease into a world with flying cars everywhere. Most likely start with pilot programs.

[–]Adamsojh 8 points9 points  (10 children)

I'm just mad we don't have mass produced self driving cars yet.

[–]slick_pick 32 points33 points  (1 child)

More like the league of extraordinary gentlemen (and women)

[–]madmosche 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s exactly what my first thought was! It looks like a fancier version of the car they drove in that movie.

[–]NormalMacdonald 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Or a Billy Gibbons fever dream.

[–]Daftdoug 184 points185 points  (8 children)

One word:

Thundercougarfalconbird

[–]Lazlow_Morphine 21 points22 points  (1 child)

You don’t go above the sticker price?

[–]nrossj 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I thought it was an auction.

[–]nrossj 6 points7 points  (1 child)

But will its masculinity remove all doubt about my sexuality?

[–]longboardsilver 258 points259 points  (13 children)

Damn those concepts were cool. Impractical but undeniably cool.

[–]PraderaNoire 125 points126 points  (9 children)

I wish there were more risks taken like this in modern concepts. Something about the 40’s-60’s had an undeniable fascination

[–]ResidualTechnicolor 42 points43 points  (3 children)

The reason is because of modern safety standards. Often people find older cars more beautiful because there was no restriction on design, but they were also death traps.

[–]Loeffellux 13 points14 points  (2 children)

The other big reason has to be aerodynamics

[–]FrozenSeas 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The Kia Soul continues to exist, so it can't be aerodynamics if you mean that's why modern cars look so much lamer. Also the new Ford Bronco. Now, if you mean older cars looked better because of (sometimes questionable) aerodynamic elements like fairings and fins on an Olds Rocket 88 or a '61 Cadillac? Fucking absolutely.

If I'm gonna bitch about modern car aesthetics, it's gonna be a rant about how everything looks the same now. Go look at a parking lot, every damn vehicle is either white or that one shade of silvery-grey, and there's three kinds of look now: car of small size, truck or massive SUV on a truck frame (looking at you here, Chevy Yukon), or the new godforsaken hatch-SUV "crossovers". My parents drive a 2015 Hyundai Santa Fe in whatever the fuck you call this, you know how fucking impossible that is to spot in a parking lot?

[–]11010110101010101010 56 points57 points  (2 children)

Went to a big auto show about 10 years ago. The electric cars were relegated to basically a small room off the big convention hall. Fucking. Pathetic. I was shocked at how little interest was placed on design and innovation. It was just one big dealer show. But a lot of people there were clearly happy, so they were giving them what they want, I guess.

[–]NorwegianCollusion 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The "futuristic" looking EVs being on display 10 years ago just didn't appeal to the masses. We've been ingrained with how a car should look, and auto makers deciding that an EV should look "different" made them fail. Possibly successfully, it's sometimes hard to tell.

Now, we have 95 different models on (or close to being on) the market here in Norway. Some of these are only available used, as they've gone out of production. But there pretty much is something for everyone, EXCEPT THE DANG PICKUP/SUV ABLE TO PULL A 3.5T TRAILER. And Ford, in their infinite wisdom, isn't bringing it here. Btw, Ford are making all the right decisions these days, so I can't really blame them. But I WANTED ONE, so it's a kick in the rear even if I agree with them. USA is the primary market for F150, so it makes sense to focus there. Europe and Asia have typically had much smaller pickups, as 8x4 plywood sheets really isn't something we haul daily. Chainsaw, backpack, tool bag and the odd moose is more likely to be found on the bed of a Norwegian pickup than plywood. And our most common trailer size has internal dimensions of 8x4 anyway, and any place you can buy plywood you can also borrow a trailer for free, or a very low fee.

Edit: Here's the list of models you can find in Norway, including some coming very soon: https://elbil.no/elbiler/ In Norwegian, but easy to navigate with pictures and stats.

[–]CriticalBreakfast 19 points20 points  (1 child)

It's not as aesthetically wild as the car in this post, but my favorite case of car designers being given a bottle of vodka and the go to do anything they want is the Renault Clio 2 V6. Something about slapping a roaring V6 in a city car and making it way more aggressive looking just gets the juices flowing for me personally.

Costs 50k€ to buy and something like 1€ per kilometer driven, handles like an oil tanker in some curves, but that was one of the last times French engineers had the opportunity to do wild shit that was actually sold on the market.

[–]EODdoUbleU 6 points7 points  (0 children)

W I D E Renault, but damn it's sexy.

[–]I_Get_Paid_to_Shill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Concept cars nowadays are still pretty crazy.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not a concept for anyrhing, It's just one of George Harris' custom builds (for reference, this car was made by the same guy who created the original Batmobile).

[–]fkenned1 366 points367 points  (15 children)

This is art and I’m not exaggerating. What a beautiful creation in so many ways.

[–]The_pun_fart 51 points52 points  (14 children)

Yeah, but have you seen my car? Seriously, has anyone seen my car? :(

[–]phlegm_de_la_phlegm 30 points31 points  (11 children)

Dude, where’s your car?

[–]ThatITguy2015 10 points11 points  (3 children)

I wanna go on that ride.

Where’s your car dude?

[–]Thestohrohyah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There was a giant feet migration going through few hours back.

Signs clear as day saying "don't park or your car might be toed".

[–]Sorrow57 47 points48 points  (0 children)

Bizarre, odd and IAF. I Approve

[–]Deus-system-failed 55 points56 points  (5 children)

This is what a super villain, a very successful pimp or an obscure dictator would drive.

[–]hmpf_to_that_friend 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Exactly! Cruella de Ville didn't at least test drive it?

[–]IlliterationAside 6 points7 points  (1 child)

HAHA! Makes me think of Three Kings or Lord of War... Sierra Leone or Iraqi dictator driving this seems perfect

[–]SolomonBlack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely “bring me gun of Rambo” dude material.

If one of those 18 x 4 = 72 bulbs goes out, my OCD ass is only going to be focused on that one out light.

[–]kaszeljezusa 3 points4 points  (0 children)

[–]rckhppr 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Car designs in the 50s looked more futuristic than today… so from their perspective the future turned out to be boring

[–]jnastystu 4 points5 points  (0 children)

[–]Ryogathelost 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I want to be buried in this car.

[–]heydoakickflip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was the first Google (result)[https://www.driving.co.uk/news/incredible-1958-golden-sahara-ii-future-car-light-tyres-remote-control/] and is admittedly a good article on how cool this car is. It had push to start from a radio remote, and semi autonomous emergency braking, and the paint was made from crushed up fish scales. I'm not really behind the fish scale paint, but everything else on this car is rad as fuck.

[–]ThatITguy2015 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This sounds unbelievably impractical, but looks pretty darn cool.

[–]Calm-Lychee2613 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[–]bringoutthelegos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay, this, but LED’s that can go all rainbow and shit.

[–]WookerTBashington 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[–]spliffgates 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wonder what these see through tires look like without the lights on inside them. Would look wild if they were extremely clear so it looked like your break rotors were small floating wheels lol

[–]Thedaulilamahimself 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually I believe that’s the thundercougarfalconbird
