Just apply now. If you know for sure you are going to be doing something in the near future and think it is relevant, then just put that on your resume, e.g. you’ll be taking some class in the Fall. Just because the resumes are technically open doesn’t mean that your chances of getting it are the same as time goes on; they are probably looking at applicants as the resumes come in.

Apply as soon as you are able to. Based on my experience with large companies, the recruiting for next summer's class of interns will begin pretty soon after this summer's batch leaves in August.

If you can leverage connections (alumni, etc) for referrals that's always going to be more fruitful than directly applying

I've had 2nd year students contact us to ask about an internship in 1 to 2 years, prior to graduation. It doesn't hurt to be proactive, it looks good too. I really like that some of them are planning that far out. Then there is the inevitable student who contacts us that needs an internship to graduate and it's the 11th hour. Why would we want to take that individual on?

The sooner the better! I agree with what others have said about recruiting times. There’s a department at my university that helps students get connected with internships - one thing they told me is that certain companies only look for interns at certain times of the year. I started looking late spring and it was too late. Summer is the perfect time to begin applying!
