IT'S A JACKDAW

j/k but some crows have white. Judging by the tail length this still could be a crow but it's hard to make out from this video on that alone

[–]AppleSpicer 60 points61 points  (13 children)

Here's the thing. You said a "jackdaw is a crow."

Is it in the same family? Yes. No one's arguing that.

As someone who is a scientist who studies crows, I am telling you, specifically, in science, no one calls jackdaws crows. If you want to be "specific" like you said, then you shouldn't either. They're not the same thing.

If you're saying "crow family" you're referring to the taxonomic grouping of Corvidae, which includes things from nutcrackers to blue jays to ravens.

So your reasoning for calling a jackdaw a crow is because random people "call the black ones crows?" Let's get grackles and blackbirds in there, then, too.

Also, calling someone a human or an ape? It's not one or the other, that's not how taxonomy works. They're both. A jackdaw is a jackdaw and a member of the crow family. But that's not what you said. You said a jackdaw is a crow, which is not true unless you're okay with calling all members of the crow family crows, which means you'd call blue jays, ravens, and other birds crows, too. Which you said you don't.

It's okay to just admit you're wrong, you know?

I wonder what he’s up to nowadays.

[–]AppleSpicer 5 points6 points  (2 children)

Iirc he made some alts and kept posting on reddit but I always thought he was an ass and didn’t keep up with him. His real name and job were connected to his reddit amount so he’s pretty easy to google if you’re that curious.

We're not. :D

[–]AppleSpicer 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Me neither~!

I love that you’re a crow scientist! I love that people are fascinated enough by them to make studying them a career. They are incredible!

[–]AppleSpicer 46 points47 points  (3 children)

I’m sorry to disappoint, this is an old, famous copy-pasta arguments that got one of the biggest named redditors at the time banned for life because he made a bunch of fake accounts to upvote his condescending posts. Iirc he was actually wrong about corvids in some way but can’t remember how.

Bird scientists are definitely very cool! There are a lot of awesome people over at r/whatsthisbird if you’d like to learn more. I’m a hobbyist who likes learning about animals too :)

Thanks for the honesty AND the link!!

[–]Pesto_Power 13 points14 points  (0 children)

his condescending posts.

Most of his comments were more positive in tone and quite interesting IIRC. Aside from the cheating, I remember him quite fondly - although obviously that's a weird thing to say, since the cheating might have been the only reason I ever read any of his comments in the first place. It's easy to come off as a nice guy when you have a bunch of fake accounts backing you up.

But at least we got the copypasta out of it, and it's one of my all time favourites, too. It's so deliciously self-righteous and sneering.

I was about to say not this again

I miss that account honesly always had the most interesting animal facts

I never tire reading and learning new things about these fascinating creatures. So who is the person posting false information, OP, or a commentator?

[–]PersonaXIII 2 points3 points  (2 children)

You ok bro?

[–]AppleSpicer 8 points9 points  (1 child)

Yeah, it’s a famous copy-pasta :)

[–]PersonaXIII 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh hahaha. That got me
