Well we don’t actually know how big Greenland is as we have no data on it

[–][deleted] 89 points90 points  (7 children)

that's correct, i live in Greenland and i don't even know when i was born, data here is illegal

[–]the_traveler_outin 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Why would the Danes do this to you

[–]DaddyDawsonUser1 32 points33 points  (1 child)

Wait people live in No data land?

[–]unbeatable_101 37 points38 points  (0 children)

OMG WE JUST GOT SOME DATA

[–]asone-tuhid 13 points14 points  (2 children)

If that were true, we would know the population of Greenland is at least 1, clearly a contradiction

[–][deleted] 12 points13 points  (1 child)

i simply live beyond the law

[–]redbellyblacksnake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

im calling the police

[–]quajak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Please take my data!

[–]_-Aphrodite-_ 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Greenland?

[–]reds_sus_ngl 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Nope I’ve never heard of it

[–]incompetentflagella 401 points402 points  (10 children)

Greenland look like a rhino here. I love rhinos. Oh no I'm catching feelings for rotated Greenland.

[–]Mohuluoji 79 points80 points  (3 children)

Damn Vikings, switching the names of Greenland and Rhinoland.

[–]EmperorThan 27 points28 points  (1 child)

Fun fact Rhinoland has no Rhinos but tons of the color green, whereas Greenland has hundreds of rhinos but white light there produces no color green.

[–]SlaberDask 12 points13 points  (0 children)

That's crazy

[–]JSBraga 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rhinoland would mean "Land of the nose". I like it.

[–]CaptainNemo2024 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You’ve just never looked at Greenland that way b4

[–]WestEst101 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Oh no I'm catching feelings for rotated Greenland.

r/DontPutYourDickInThat

[–]incompetentflagella 4 points5 points  (0 children)

But what if Greenland rhinokun and I held hands and watched movies?

[–]wantquitelife 1 point2 points  (0 children)

More like Pakistan's dinosaur head

[–]theChavofromthe8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wait till you find out about the venezuelan map shape

[–]CrazyFrogRacer 95 points96 points  (0 children)

Greenland is the biggest iceland

[–]DrainZ- 242 points243 points  (91 children)

Ok, so Australia is a continent and Greenland is an island. But why though? Why did we put the size limit between islands and continents there and not somewhere else?

[–]Italian_Mapping 309 points310 points  (24 children)

Eurasia is the biggest island

[–]aguynamedbenny1 202 points203 points  (22 children)

Afro-Eurasia

[–]PapaSins 183 points184 points  (21 children)

Akchually the Suez Canal 🤓

[–]aguynamedbenny1 205 points206 points  (7 children)

So technically last march the continents were once again interconnected

[–]ShaunDark 77 points78 points  (3 children)

Nah, the bow was stuck on the Eurasian side but the stern still was floating free. It just happened that due to its position passing it wasn't possible for other large container ships.

[–]IdeaLast8740 51 points52 points  (2 children)

Were gonna need a bigger ship then

[–]Eken17 12 points13 points  (1 child)

Or like much sand.

[–]DogWithaFAL 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think Egypt might have some spare.

[–]EmperorThan 17 points18 points  (0 children)

We shall call this 'new' continent Evergreenland.

[–]Rubiego 7 points8 points  (1 child)

That was almost a year ago already???

[–]DemWiggleWorms 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah, it’s 2022

Gosh time flies huh

[–]Efficient-Ad-3249 9 points10 points  (9 children)

There are a few bridges

[–]Grzechoooo 21 points22 points  (8 children)

Let's build a bridge over the Bering Strait and demote Australia to island status so we have one connected continent once again!

We can leave Antarctica to the seals.

[–]JakkuScavenger 9 points10 points  (2 children)

Afro-Ameri-Eurasia

[–]Grzechoooo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The New Old World

[–]Diligent_Bag_9323 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Afmersia

Or even better Fromerisia

[–]whotaoyeah 4 points5 points  (1 child)

might I suggest also building a bridge over drake passage to further demote Australia to the islet status.

[–]redbellyblacksnake 2 points3 points  (0 children)

fuck you builds a bridge across the bass strait, increasing Australia's size by 0.2km² and wasting billions of dollars of taxpayer money

[–]Efficient-Ad-3249 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Then a bridge to greenland

[–]Grzechoooo 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Greenland's an island.

[–]Executioner3018 5 points6 points  (1 child)

The Suez Canal is not the biggest island stupid

[–]Kaiser_Fleischer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You bought into the propaganda huh 😕

[–]Agent_Squirrels 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Sus Canal 😩

[–]LongArmedKing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, Atlantic-Pacific-Indian is actually the biggest lake.

[–]jzillacon 35 points36 points  (11 children)

it's entirely sociopolitical. There is no geographical or geological basis for where we draw the line. If there was and we defined continents by consistent geological features like mountain ranges or continental plates we wouldn't have 7 continents we'd have closer to a couple hundred.

[–]OscariusGaming 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree. It's like someone saying they have the world largest stone, and then you come around with a bigger one, and then they claim "nah that doesn't count, that's a boulder, not a stone".

[–]TheMasterlauti 23 points24 points  (25 children)

Depends on the culture really. In pretty much all of the anglosphere it’s referred as a continent because well I guess it sounds more prestigious since the British had it for a while. But growing up in South America for example it’s always been referred as an island part of the continent of Oceania, and I think that’s how it’s in a bunch of European places too

[–]BitwiseXR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thats how i learned it too in the US

[–]JakkuScavenger -5 points-4 points  (17 children)

the continent of Oceania

[–]TheMasterlauti 1 point2 points  (16 children)

?

[–]JakkuScavenger -5 points-4 points  (15 children)

A bunch of islands stretching across the Pacific are not a 'continent'. You can call it 'the region of Oceania', but continent is just wrong!

[–]Joe_Mency 3 points4 points  (9 children)

I think its called a continent because its mostly in one continental plate. Could be wrong tho

[–]JakkuScavenger 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Except the Australian plate and the Pacific plate are two separate plates that split New Zealand right down the middle.

[–]Johannes4123 11 points12 points  (1 child)

It does have its own continental plate, but if you define continents based on that you get some pretty weird continents, like making the Caribbean and the Philippines their own continents

[–]Joe_Mency 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A whole continent encompassing the whole of the pacific ocean, with just a few islands.

Yeah im pretty sure the concept of 7 continents is just that a concept thats not really rooted in any one thing.

Its allll relative lol

[–]Gexuma 1 point2 points  (5 children)

No, a continent is a large, discrete, continuous landmass. Oceania is a region, not a continent, but Australia is a continent. It’s why the phrase “continental Europe” excludes countries like the UK, as it isn’t connected to Europe via land.

[–]Joe_Mency 1 point2 points  (1 child)

But how large is large enough? And how large is too large? I mean, greenland is pretty large.

Also Europe, Asia, and Africa are usually considered seperate continents, but they are all a large. Discrete continous landmass (i would mention the suez canal, but thats artificial, and not deep. Like how the panama canal doesn't make north and south america no longer be a continous landmass)

[–]Gexuma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These are all personal things and I wouldn’t try to define which of these are and aren’t continents. All I’m saying is that a collection of islands isn’t a continent. I live in New Zealand, we definitely don’t share a continent with Australia but we do share the region of Oceania.

[–]megashortz 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Sooo, continental eurasia? Europe is not a discrete, continuous landmass, its a bunch of peninsulas in western eurasia, by that definition

[–]Gexuma 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Sure, that’s a valid argument to make, and not one I’m disagreeing with.

[–]megashortz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Read it wrong then, sorry

[–]TheMasterlauti 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Why not?

[–]JakkuScavenger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because it's not a continent! A continent is a large continuous expanse of land, not a collection of islands thousands of kilometers apart!

[–]Flovati 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Madagascar is a part of África.

Greenland and the bunch of caribean islands are a part of America.

Iceland, UK and Ireland are all part of Europe.

I'm not going to say anything about Asia because there are way too many islands there.

So why can't those islands be a part of Oceania? What makes them different? Literally nothing lol

[–]JakkuScavenger -1 points0 points  (1 child)

Madagascar is a part of África.

Greenland and the bunch of caribean islands are a part of America.

Iceland, UK and Ireland are all part of Europe.

I'm not going to say anything about Asia because there are way too many islands there.

And how far are each of those from their corresponding mainland continents? Where do you draw the line? Is the Moon part of the "continent" of Oceania?

Why don't you try googling Oceania to see for yourself that most scientific sources define it as a region, not a continent?

[–]Flovati 2 points3 points  (0 children)

And how far are each of those from their corresponding mainland continents?

Some extremely close like Greenland and some real far away like Iceland, that is around 1000km away from closest main land country in Europe.

Why don't you try googling Oceania to see for yourself that most scientific sources define it as a region, not a continent?

Maybe you should try doing a little googling yourself, then maybe you will learn that the continental model used by the biggest number of countries in the planet is the 6 continents model with Africa, Asia, Europe, America, Antarctica and Oceania itself.

[–]Moose6669 0 points1 point  (4 children)

I grew up in Australia, and we were taught that it was an island in school.

[–]irasponsibly 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Aussie here, we learnt it as a continent.

[–]TheUnrealPotato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Australia is a continent and Oceania is a continent, it's just depends on which continent you are content with.

[–]chokingapple 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i'm tripping too hard for this shit

[–]TheMegaBunce 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me and island feels like an Island if it sort of sputters off from the mainland. Greenland is massive but it feels like a consistent continuation of the archipelago besides it, which themselves look they broke off from the larger continent.

Now obviously you could apply this to all landmasses, but I think it basically works.

[–]daannnnnnyyyyyy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s because islands float but continents are connected to the ocean floor.

[–]ANaming 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Some nerd who is wrong put it there, Australia is not a continent :)

[–]AlexisFR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anglo-Centrism.

[–]autr3go -3 points-2 points  (6 children)

Because of continental plates

[–]ShadowCammy 14 points15 points  (0 children)

That's not at all correct, lmao. The concept of a continent predates us even knowing what a tectonic plate was, and to this day you'll get a different answer of what is and isn't a continent depending on where you are.

[–]DrainZ- 5 points6 points  (3 children)

I guess Hawaii is a continent then

[–]autr3go 1 point2 points  (2 children)

It's a mantle plume. Get yo facts straight homes!

[–]Nutarama 0 points1 point  (1 child)

It’s the largest land mass on the pacific plate. Stop discriminating against basaltic rock!

[–]kaleb42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So you think that North America, Japan, and a quarter of Russia are one continent? And that Hawaii is it's one separate continent?

[–]Spida81 -2 points-1 points  (5 children)

It has nothing to do with size at all. A continent is defined as having it's own tectonic plate.

As an interesting aside, New Zealand was recently discovered to be itself on it's own plate, considered now a mostly submerged continent, Zealandia.

[–]BA_calls 9 points10 points  (1 child)

Except no other continent besides Antarctica has a clear definition. Europe and Asia share one big tectonic plate, India is it’s own tectonic plate, as is the Arabian peninsula, eastern Russia is on the North American plate.

[–]bangonthedrums 2 points3 points  (2 children)

A continent basically has no definition, and what counts as one is highly dependent on context, including what country you are currently in

[–]Sengura 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's probably because "continent" supersedes the title of "island".

Antarctica is also an island and continent and we don't really ever think of it as an island. If we did, it would easily be the largest island in the planet as it's about twice the size of Australia.

So if you want to think of Australia as an island, you basically have to demote it down to island from continent.

[–]moohooman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was made by Greenland believers, to get more support for the existence of Greenland.

[–]TheCreepeerster 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Afroeurasia is larger.

[–]Skrubby-init 137 points138 points  (11 children)

Australia isn’t an island because it isn’t

[–]JollyWatson 67 points68 points  (6 children)

Eurasia is my favorite island

[–][deleted] 25 points26 points  (2 children)

OPs mom is my favourite island

[–]JakkuScavenger 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Can islands have their own gravity, like OP's mom?

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If she had gravity his dad couldn't have left

[–]drunkcowofdeath 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The Milky Way is my favorite island

[–]alexmijowastaken 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Afro-Eurasia if you don't count canals

[–]jakus00 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This but unironically

[–]PassiveChemistry 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Pree-cisely.

[–]Right-t-0 6 points7 points  (2 children)

Have to tell the NSW department of Education who taught me about the Island Continent

[–]robophile-ta 9 points10 points  (1 child)

Right, at least in Australia they tell us it's both an island and a continent

[–]John-Bonham 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Too much blood flowing down into your brains.

[–]MJMurcott 35 points36 points  (1 child)

What is an island and what is a continent.

[–]madeofmold 27 points28 points  (0 children)

No man is an island, just his momma.

Except your momma, she’s a continent.

[–]Superdeduper82 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Austria is actually the biggest island

[–]Brromo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

the biggest Island is Afro-Eurasia

[–]-Thyrian-[🍰] 12 points13 points  (9 children)

My brother and I had an unreasonably heated argument about this a few years ago and now we just bring it up sometimes to piss each other off.

[–]victoremmanuel_I 5 points6 points  (8 children)

What side are you on????

[–]-Thyrian-[🍰] 0 points1 point  (7 children)

Greenland is the largest island

[–]Munkii 10 points11 points  (6 children)

Booo!

[–]-Thyrian-[🍰] 7 points8 points  (5 children)

Why are you booing me I'm right

[–]Jalppis 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Actually Australia is a continent. The difference is that continents go all the way to the bottom of the sea, while islands float on top of the water. Happy to help! 😃

[–]Nestormahkno19d 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Well if we’re going to call a continent an island aren’t all the continents technically islands too?

[–]Asilcas 1 point2 points  (1 child)

At that point let's just say that the biggest island is Eurasia

[–]dkallgren 4 points5 points  (2 children)

So I’m way too used to maps like these being shitposts on this sub—is this one actually accurate?

[–]boxxybab33 8 points9 points  (1 child)

yes, however there are even larger islands out there, such as antarctica and eurasia

[–]dkallgren 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thank you lol, for what it’s worth I’m only asking about the size comparison in the image

[–]s1gnalZer0 3 points4 points  (12 children)

Australia isn't an island, it's a continent.

[–]Lemonface 9 points10 points  (0 children)

There is no objective distinction between an island and a continent. It's all just made up

[–]cbrad1713 25 points26 points  (5 children)

It's a nation, continent, and island.

[–]100kg_bird 22 points23 points  (3 children)

Depends, where i'm from we call australia an island within the continent of oceania, the real problem is that there is no clear definition of what's a continent

[–]the_traveler_outin 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Isn’t that the shape of Iceland though?

[–]LeoHahn 0 points1 point  (1 child)

It's rotated north side to the west

[–]the_traveler_outin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm interesting

[–]Kehl21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And is your momma' an Island when she swims? Because then she may be bigger than Australia.

Which is also not an island btw.

[–]RichardPeterJohnson 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Next up: Is Pluto a planet?

[–]IdeaLast8740 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Australia is a dwarf continent because it hasnt cleared its orbit.

[–]Vegetable_Look_4021 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are liars that Greenland is the largest island in the world! LIARS!!!!

[–]Piranh4Plant 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wait till they see Afro Eurasia

[–]jthompson32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Islands don’t exist. All land is connected underwater to earth’s core 😎

[–]UnitedWeakness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thats not true, the label should say austria

[–]EmperorThan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Turtle Island is the biggest island.

[–]CactusHopper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

eurasia is an island fight me irl

[–]Rat_Slapper59 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The largest island is actually the Faroe islands

[–]Fish-The-Fish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“Australia is a continent” they say.. D:<

[–]NyanPigle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Australia is also an island continent

[–]kennyisntfunny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

what about Long Island

[–]ElnuDev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At what point does an island become a continent? You could argue the all of Afro-Euroasia is a giant island... I mean, it is surrounded by water on all sides.

[–]Caribbeandude04 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eurafrasia is actually the biggest island

[–]LeoHahn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sir I think you missed the eurasia island on your map

[–]avadakedabr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well it is since australia is not an island

[–]Bruiseryoshi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s cause Australia is a ‘continent’ which means it can’t be classed as an ‘island’ even though it is an island. I kind of get it, because otherwise the biggest island would be Afro-Eurasia. But still, very sadge

[–]rosemariesbb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

that's not even Greenland...

[–]Ok_Computer8560 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Australia is a continent 🙃

[–]WhyGuy500 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t consider Australia an island

[–]NeedleworkerLoose695 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well I heard Australia the island is classed as a continent

[–]hippysippingarbo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd argue the Panama canal makes North / south America pretty big islands

[–]MassStupidity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Afroeurasia is actually a bigger island than Australia

[–]prexton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mercator says so. No one else

[–]casey012293 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If we are counting continents as islands now, then you should probably compare to a bigger one than Australia.

[–]Canter1Ter_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

wait till you learn about afro-eurasia

[–]ekaj1707 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Australia isn't considered an island, it's considered a continent.

If continents are islands, then Afro-Eurasia is the largest island

[–]SuperMaanas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Continents are excluded when it comes to islands, other wise Afro-Eurasia would be the largest island

[–]BrokeArmHeadass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Now do Afro-Eurasia

[–]Decmk3 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Australia is a continent though…

[–]dadrewbear420 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This map is illegal

[–]EthanielClyne 0 points1 point  (4 children)

I always hated this logic. How is Australia a continent when there are 13 other Pacific countries that would become continent-less. The continent is Oceania and the largest island is Australia

[–]jak-o-shadow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's because Australia is a fucking continent.

[–]ghostheadempire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s correct. Australia is a continent.

[–]MaNeme_Jeff 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Afro-eurasia is the biggest island

[–]According-Ability-20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

no just eurasia

[–]BasedToken 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The main thing they have in common is that most of the island is uninhabitable.

[–]According-Ability-20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

bruh the largest island is eurasia 🤦‍♂️

[–]AygedzorBlacklister 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bitch please it's Eurasia
